- 0:00Speaker 1: Democratic congressional nominee Luke Bronan joins us. Now, mister mayor,
- 0:05Speaker 1: it's nice to speak to congratulations on your win. This
- 0:07Speaker 1: is now day one of the general election effort. For you.
- 0:10Speaker 1: What are these results from overnight say about voters demand
- 0:14Speaker 1: for change?
- 0:16Speaker 2: First of all, thanks Peter for having me on and
- 0:17Speaker 2: congratulations on the new show.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Great to be with you.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Look, I think the message that we heard loud and
- 0:22Speaker 2: clear in Connecticut last night was that voters recognize Democrats
- 0:26Speaker 2: recognize that we have to bring a whole new energy
- 0:29Speaker 2: to this fight as a Democratic party. We got a
- 0:31Speaker 2: president who's out of control, costs going through the roof,
- 0:34Speaker 2: and economy that feels broken, and we need a Democratic
- 0:36Speaker 2: party that is clear and courageous and bold about what
- 0:40Speaker 2: we're fighting for and who we're fighting for. And to
- 0:42Speaker 2: do that well, we need to get some new voices
- 0:44Speaker 2: and some stronger voices in our party.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So all of a sudden, now you have to shift
- 0:48Speaker 1: the focus from Representative Larson in that state to Amy Shai.
- 0:52Speaker 1: She is going to be the Republican that you'll face off.
- 0:55Speaker 1: She ran uncontested. What's your first priority in delivering the
- 0:58Speaker 1: difference between your two positions.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Look, I think there's just a world of difference between
- 1:03Speaker 2: anybody who is running on the Republican line to try
- 1:06Speaker 2: to get a majority, to continue to just lie down
- 1:10Speaker 2: while Donald Trump tramples on our constitution, tramples over Congress.
- 1:14Speaker 2: We need a Congress that is willing to stand up,
- 1:16Speaker 2: be a check on this dangerous president, hold him accountable,
- 1:20Speaker 2: and then lay out an agenda for the American people
- 1:21Speaker 2: that is really focused on the issues that.
- 1:23Speaker 3: People are feeling every day.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I mean, the big three issues that I've been talking
- 1:26Speaker 2: about are universal health care, housing that people can actually afford,
- 1:30Speaker 2: bringing down electricity prices with a real shift to rendewal
- 1:33Speaker 2: energy so we can bring down costs and do the
- 1:35Speaker 2: right thing for this climate and for our kids.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I think we have to be loud.
- 1:40Speaker 2: And clear that we recognize that when things feel really broken,
- 1:43Speaker 2: the answer can't be small.
- 1:45Speaker 3: We need to be bolder and clearer.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Mister Mayor. One thing that struck me and I was
- 1:49Speaker 1: out on the campaign trail within the last several days.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I was in Michigan in particular, and every Democrat I
- 1:55Speaker 1: talked to what I was hearing, and I think it's
- 1:56Speaker 1: consistent at other places across the country is they want
- 1:59Speaker 1: to be voting for something, not just against Donald Trump
- 2:02Speaker 1: right now. In particular, you made message of one of
- 2:05Speaker 1: the things they want to be voting for, which is
- 2:07Speaker 1: this change in terms of who is the deliverer of
- 2:09Speaker 1: some of the message that they want right now? Fifty
- 2:11Speaker 1: eight percent of voters agree that aging lawmakers pose a
- 2:15Speaker 1: major problem. That's a dramatic figure. Almost six and ten
- 2:19Speaker 1: Americans say as much, what do you think the Democratic
- 2:22Speaker 1: Party needs to be for right now? What is like
- 2:24Speaker 1: your twenty second elevator pitch.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Well, first, let me just say this was a race
- 2:29Speaker 2: that yeah, it was about generational change. But I'm also
- 2:32Speaker 2: bringing a range of experience to this work. You know,
- 2:34Speaker 2: I served in the Obama administration as part of the
- 2:36Speaker 2: team that helped to create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
- 2:39Speaker 2: to keep Americans from getting ripped off, served in the
- 2:42Speaker 2: Navy and deployed in Afghanistan, and eight years as the mayor
- 2:45Speaker 2: of our capital city, and so bringing a range of
- 2:46Speaker 2: perspectives that I think will matter down in Congress. But
- 2:49Speaker 2: to me, the two big things we've got to be
- 2:51Speaker 2: about as a party right now are stopping the damage
- 2:53Speaker 2: and that out of control corruption that we're seeing from
- 2:56Speaker 2: this president and building an economy that actually works for
- 2:59Speaker 2: work and families in the middle class. And again for me,
- 3:01Speaker 2: that's healthcare, housing, electricity prices, and getting out there and
- 3:06Speaker 2: building a movement outside the walls of the Capitol that
- 3:09Speaker 2: actually makes those things possible.
- 3:11Speaker 3: That's got to be the biggest mission right now.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's the message a lot of Democrats
- 3:15Speaker 1: are trying to lean into right now. Let me ask you, though,
- 3:17Speaker 1: if I can quickly about that topic, generational change, just
- 3:20Speaker 1: because it is so resident I think right now, in
- 3:21Speaker 1: the sort of climate, I mean, Donald Trump the oldest
- 3:23Speaker 1: president to ever serve, right Joe Biden previously was the
- 3:26Speaker 1: oldest president to ever serve, you have this message of
- 3:29Speaker 1: generational change as well, that was residents, Will you make
- 3:32Speaker 1: a mandatory retirement age for coires a part of your
- 3:35Speaker 1: general election pitch? Is that a message you hope to
- 3:37Speaker 1: deliver moving forward?
- 3:39Speaker 2: You know, I'm for term limits. I think that these
- 3:42Speaker 2: are not meant to be lifetime jobs. That anytime you're
- 3:44Speaker 2: doing the same thing for decade after decade, people get
- 3:47Speaker 2: stuck in routines, they get complacent, and we can't afford that.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I want to see more renewal. I want to see
- 3:52Speaker 2: a Democratic party that recognizes that we would be stronger
- 3:56Speaker 2: if more of our leadership. You know, saw that part
- 3:59Speaker 2: of leadership is knowing when it's time to pass the torch.
- 4:02Speaker 2: And I think that's a message our party as a
- 4:03Speaker 2: whole needs to hear.
- 4:05Speaker 1: There has been obviously with the Doze cuts that were
- 4:07Speaker 1: so for good reason, heavily criticized. There was so much
- 4:10Speaker 1: institutional knowledge that with that warning was thrown out the door.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Here is there any worry about that that the same
- 4:16Speaker 1: should apply to lawmakers, the fear that the institutional knowledge
- 4:19Speaker 1: goes with some of those senior lawmakers who leave.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Look again, I'm bringing a range of experiences.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I think it's important for our Democratic Party to have
- 4:29Speaker 2: more veterans who can speak out about the recklessness about
- 4:32Speaker 2: this war in Iran. I think it's important to have
- 4:34Speaker 2: more mayors who understand what it means when the president
- 4:38Speaker 2: the president slashes funding for gun violence prevention. You know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: I think those are experiences that matter to me far
- 4:45Speaker 2: more than your knowledge of an institution that is a
- 4:50Speaker 2: little bit broken and needs to be shaken up.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that institutional knowledge only matters if the institution is working,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and I think most Americans agree to Congress isn't working
- 4:58Speaker 1: right now. I do want to lean into your military
- 5:00Speaker 1: experience very quickly the situation with Irad. The President just
- 5:03Speaker 1: moments before we sat down here said that the US
- 5:06Speaker 1: controls the straight up horror moves. Right now, we have
- 5:08Speaker 1: seen that that doesn't appear to be the case right now.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Just based on your military experience, your former intelligence officer,
- 5:15Speaker 1: what do you make of the way the US has
- 5:17Speaker 1: been handling this war now five plus months in in Iran.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I think this is one of the biggest self inflicted
- 5:26Speaker 2: wounds from a national security standpoint that we've seen in
- 5:29Speaker 2: my lifetime, probably the biggest one since the war in Iraq.
- 5:31Speaker 3: This president is reckless, He is dangerous.
- 5:35Speaker 2: He's lying to himself if he believes what he's saying,
- 5:38Speaker 2: and he's definitely lying to America. This war has put
- 5:41Speaker 2: us in a far weaker position. It's damaged our economy,
- 5:44Speaker 2: it's deep stabilized the world. It's burned up our munitions,
- 5:48Speaker 2: which create a huge amount of vulnerability for our allies
- 5:50Speaker 2: and ourselves. This president is the most reckless and irresponsible
- 5:56Speaker 2: president of national security we've had a long, long time.
- 6:00Speaker 1: If you win this fall. What's one thing you hope
- 6:03Speaker 1: to deliver for your constituents that they may not have
- 6:05Speaker 1: been able to receive under John Larson's terms in office.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Look, one of the issues at Congressman Larsen made a
- 6:14Speaker 2: focus for many years, which I respect, was a fight
- 6:16Speaker 2: to protect social security. I'm going to be proud to
- 6:18Speaker 2: carry on that fight, but I also want to see
- 6:20Speaker 2: a Democratic Party that has focused on those things that
- 6:22Speaker 2: I hear out there every day, healthcare, housing, costs across
- 6:27Speaker 2: the board going up, stopping this president from doing more
- 6:31Speaker 2: damage every day, both through the reckless war which is
- 6:33Speaker 2: driving up the cost of gas, and his across the
- 6:36Speaker 2: board tariffs which have driven up the cost of everything
- 6:38Speaker 2: from gross degrees to construction. We've got to stop the damage,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and then we have to again build a movement that
- 6:45Speaker 2: makes it possible for us to make real change on
- 6:47Speaker 2: things like healthcare, housing, and so much else.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Mister mayor Luke Brownin, it's a pleasure to see you.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I appreciate you making time with us here on State
- 6:53Speaker 1: of Play.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Thanks Beeter. Great to be with you.
