- 0:26Speaker 3: Class I'll go holid and welcome back to another episode
- 0:34Speaker 3: of the Mixed Company Podcast. I'm one of the hosts,
- 0:37Speaker 3: Jamison Wells, of course, joined by the classy. I'll cahol it, classy.
- 0:42Speaker 3: What's going on? Man? Oh man?
- 0:44Speaker 2: I am so happy to be back in my home
- 0:46Speaker 2: podcast studio in Tucson, Arizona. Jamison. If y'all haven't listened
- 0:49Speaker 2: to our previous episode, he definitely should because it is
- 0:51Speaker 2: a great one. And I was traveling during that time.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I recorded that episode a shitty hotel in Austin, Texas,
- 0:57Speaker 2: had just visited Galveston Island, which is located on the
- 1:00Speaker 2: Gulf of Mexico. But now I'm happy to be home
- 1:02Speaker 2: and I'm so stoked that this is episode ten of
- 1:05Speaker 2: the Mixed Company Podcast. No Middle, yes, officially double digits.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Haters said it couldn't be done, and by haters, I
- 1:10Speaker 2: mean my shitty WiFi that has been working against me
- 1:12Speaker 2: for years.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, well that meaning said, I'm glad you're back. Glad
- 1:17Speaker 3: you're back at Tucson. How's how's Austin trip?
- 1:20Speaker 2: It was fun, Don't get me wrong. I had a
- 1:22Speaker 2: lot of fun. But also, man, Texas is just kind
- 1:25Speaker 2: of like, it's a lot, and it was really cool
- 1:28Speaker 2: to go to a lot of cities that I hadn't
- 1:30Speaker 2: been to as an adult. I did, like I said, Galveston, Austin,
- 1:32Speaker 2: San Antonio. So that was a lot of fun. But
- 1:36Speaker 2: you know, I let's just say I missed home, and
- 1:39Speaker 2: Tucson feels very homey to me. And I will say
- 1:43Speaker 2: everywhere I went, really cool people, really friendly bartenders, chatted
- 1:47Speaker 2: up the locals, everybody was super nice. So, you know what,
- 1:49Speaker 2: I'm not gonna say it was a bad trip. It wasn't.
- 1:51Speaker 2: But like I said, I definitely Arizona and Texas they're
- 1:56Speaker 2: both viserably hot and both very racist. But Tucson does
- 1:59Speaker 2: have something about it that's very chill. And I was
- 2:02Speaker 2: happy to be home.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Okay, fair enough, fair enough, I'm glad you back. Hoping
- 2:06Speaker 3: got some barbecue and some some good boss stories and whatnot,
- 2:09Speaker 3: and they have different beers out there and all that
- 2:10Speaker 3: good stuff, So I hope you're able to do Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 2: No, I I ate my wad and barbecue. You know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: I think I think there was a whiskey shortage in
- 2:18Speaker 2: Austin by the time I left. To be quite honest
- 2:20Speaker 2: with you, I think I made a dent fair enough,
- 2:22Speaker 2: fair enough.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Well, I mean, since you've been gone and been a
- 2:25Speaker 3: lot of boxing going on out boxing news, a lot
- 2:28Speaker 3: of boxing in general. So where do you want to
- 2:31Speaker 3: start at.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, let's see. This morning, I woke up at the
- 2:33Speaker 2: Krack Carnoon, hung over as hell, walked to the newstand
- 2:36Speaker 2: and I picked up the latest copy of the Boxing Gazette.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So let's leave through that. Most of the articles in
- 2:41Speaker 2: there about the major event that happened last weekend in
- 2:44Speaker 2: Saudi Arabia called it the Last Crescendo. It was the
- 2:47Speaker 2: rematch between Archer Betterbev and Dmitri Bevol, But there were
- 2:51Speaker 2: a lot of other fights on the card, and uh
- 2:53Speaker 2: there they were really fun to watch. It was a
- 2:55Speaker 2: great event all around. So we'll get into some of those,
- 2:58Speaker 2: but just first for some background, Better be Of and
- 3:01Speaker 2: Bevil first fought in October twenty twenty four, better be
- 3:04Speaker 2: I won by Unanum's decision became the undisputed heavyweight champion
- 3:07Speaker 2: of the world. This time around, people narrowly got the
- 3:09Speaker 2: win and was crowned the new undisputed champion. One judge
- 3:13Speaker 2: called it a draw, the other two win in favor
- 3:15Speaker 2: of Bevall. So, Jamison, what did you think of those results?
- 3:18Speaker 2: Did you think bee Will deserved the win? What were
- 3:20Speaker 2: your thoughts?
- 3:21Speaker 3: I thought it was a good fight, a good overall
- 3:23Speaker 3: fight whenever. So you know, when it comes to boxing,
- 3:27Speaker 3: you know, the first thing we always want to have
- 3:29Speaker 3: is a good scrap. That's the first thing, right, whether
- 3:32Speaker 3: whoever wins, loses, whatever, you just want a competitive fight.
- 3:34Speaker 3: And I think that's the first thing that got marked off, right.
- 3:37Speaker 3: So we got that, which is fine, you know, guy decision.
- 3:41Speaker 3: You know, val or Vall was the winner, which was fine.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I didn't have any problems with it. Very strong, chin like,
- 3:48Speaker 3: very very very strong, chin like, very impressive that when
- 3:52Speaker 3: I like, you know, but no, it was a very
- 3:54Speaker 3: good fight, and I think, you know, to be honest
- 3:56Speaker 3: with you, I think it deserves a trilogy, to be
- 3:58Speaker 3: honest with you, I think I think there's interest in
- 4:01Speaker 3: a trilogy. You know, it's one to one. Now, the fights,
- 4:05Speaker 3: you know, this fight was very competitive. I mean, here's
- 4:07Speaker 3: the thing. If it was judged a different way, I
- 4:12Speaker 3: don't know how many good plants there are. There would
- 4:15Speaker 3: be some. I don't think it would be mass hysteria.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Oh tim I got robbed. I don't know. I don't know.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Well, that's always the case for the last fight. They said,
- 4:24Speaker 2: you know, Bevall was robbed. This time there are people
- 4:26Speaker 2: commenting saying that better be it was robbed. I think
- 4:29Speaker 2: one thing that I hate about boxing fans, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 2: in the comments on social media, it's it's two things.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I want them to engage in the sport in a
- 4:35Speaker 2: better way. They always either say it's a robbery or
- 4:37Speaker 2: this guy's fighting and nobody and that's it. It's like
- 4:40Speaker 2: a bird sanctuary, just fall of parents. I mean, come
- 4:43Speaker 2: on for me, honestly, the fight was so close that
- 4:46Speaker 2: I wouldn't have been surprised anyway that it went, if
- 4:49Speaker 2: either guy went, or if it was a draw. To
- 4:51Speaker 2: be quite honest with you, you know, but yeah, like I said,
- 4:53Speaker 2: Beebell had a great chin. I think the biggest compliment
- 4:57Speaker 2: you can pay him is that archer better be of
- 5:00Speaker 2: had a one hundred percent knockout rage and all of
- 5:03Speaker 2: his fights up until he fought Bevall, everybody else he
- 5:06Speaker 2: got him out of there never went the distance with
- 5:08Speaker 2: anybody except this guy. So yeah, I think that I
- 5:14Speaker 2: think the win was deserved. But yeah, like I said,
- 5:16Speaker 2: it could have gone either way and I would have
- 5:17Speaker 2: been happy. I just was just happy to see the
- 5:19Speaker 2: two of them, two guys at the top of their
- 5:22Speaker 2: top of their game, you know, really good technical fighters,
- 5:24Speaker 2: really strong fighters, warriors all the way through. I'd love
- 5:28Speaker 2: to see it. Man, It's it's wonderful, Like that's what
- 5:29Speaker 2: I love about the sports, fights like that. So with
- 5:33Speaker 2: that said, you know you said you were thinking of trilogy.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Another thing we talked about last episode is that David
- 5:38Speaker 2: Benaviva is the natural person to challenge bev All. Right, now,
- 5:45Speaker 2: what do you prefer a trilogy or for better VIDs
- 5:47Speaker 2: versus Bevall?
- 5:48Speaker 3: Next, Well, that's a that's trilogy. I think you're you're
- 5:51Speaker 3: mixing up the names there.
- 5:53Speaker 2: What's that?
- 5:54Speaker 3: No, my bad, ipologiz I was thinking about something totally different. No,
- 5:57Speaker 3: the trilogy is what works for those people want to see, right,
- 6:00Speaker 3: But Navida is a little bit different. It's a different situation.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I think he's waiting for someone totally different. So I
- 6:06Speaker 3: was mixing up we know who, Butnavida is waiting for
- 6:08Speaker 3: so we ain't got to go into that.
- 6:09Speaker 2: But I don't think so though. I think Benavidez has
- 6:11Speaker 2: basically walked away from the potential Canelo fight, and he's
- 6:14Speaker 2: so I think so. I think I think that he
- 6:18Speaker 2: knows his best bet is sticking with light heavyweight and
- 6:20Speaker 2: challenging one of these two guys better be ever be all,
- 6:23Speaker 2: depending on who you know is. I think I think
- 6:27Speaker 2: he sees the.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Writing on the wall. I don't think you can give
- 6:30Speaker 3: up on the payday that easily. Okay, Okay, you know
- 6:32Speaker 3: what I mean. I think that's another big fight money
- 6:36Speaker 3: and storyline wise, that you can't just give up that easily. Now,
- 6:41Speaker 3: if he gets you know, if it's something where he's
- 6:43Speaker 3: told no, or if Canelo ends up fighting Chance Crawford
- 6:47Speaker 3: multiple times, then I get you. You can't wait forever.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So I understand where you're coming from. But I think
- 6:51Speaker 3: we should see a trilogy of this one. I think
- 6:53Speaker 3: we really should. I think one we don't get the
- 6:55Speaker 3: many trilogies anymore anyway for a lot of different reasons.
- 6:59Speaker 3: But that makes boxing great when you see two guys
- 7:03Speaker 3: fight each other, it goes to the card each time.
- 7:07Speaker 3: That's good and it leaves a lot of discussion whenever
- 7:10Speaker 3: it's a close fight, like you said, it can go
- 7:13Speaker 3: either way. That's good for the sport. That's really good.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Instead of oh God, Rob like you said, or oh
- 7:18Speaker 3: this and that. No, no, we need close fights. We
- 7:21Speaker 3: need to be able to discuss and go over Hey,
- 7:25Speaker 3: this is what happened in this fight. This what happened
- 7:27Speaker 3: to that fight. We need to be able to discuss
- 7:29Speaker 3: as boxing fans. So I don't have a problem at all. Plus,
- 7:32Speaker 3: what was the last trilogy that we had? Was it
- 7:34Speaker 3: Wilder and Fuera's last like mainstream trilogy that we had.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the less That's the only one I can
- 7:40Speaker 2: think of that I can remember in recent memories. So yeah,
- 7:42Speaker 2: and we said it before in the show. That was
- 7:45Speaker 2: a huge spectacle, you know everybody. It permeated into the
- 7:49Speaker 2: non boxing fans. You know, normisn't knew about it, So yeah.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I agree.
- 7:55Speaker 2: You know, like I said, David Benavidez, he's been waiting
- 7:58Speaker 2: for a shot either with Canelo or for Light have
- 8:00Speaker 2: wait a championship and I love you, David, come on
- 8:02Speaker 2: the show. He's in Phoenix, so I'll drive to you.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I'll bring a microphone so I can apologize to you
- 8:07Speaker 2: in person from my stance because I want to see
- 8:09Speaker 2: Bevo versus the.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Better b of three.
- 8:10Speaker 2: You know, I David, you can chill a little bit longer.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I know you've been waiting, but please just hang out
- 8:15Speaker 2: for like another year, because yeah, seeing these two guys
- 8:18Speaker 2: in the ring together, it was awesome. I'll take it.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I'll take a quadrilogy based on what run it back.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Later this year, early next year, whatever, whatever works. But
- 8:26Speaker 3: I think there's a demand for the fight, that's the thing.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I think they're an actual demand. And whenever you have that,
- 8:31Speaker 3: you got to hit that demand while it's there, because
- 8:33Speaker 3: it's no guarantee that always be there. So I think
- 8:36Speaker 3: that's that's the thing. But no, it was good to see.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I said. I'm here for good fights. I don't really
- 8:40Speaker 3: care for the results that much. I care about good
- 8:44Speaker 3: competitive fights. If we get good competitive fights, that's better
- 8:47Speaker 3: for the overall sport than anything else.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Right, And Archer better b of is forty, so you
- 8:52Speaker 2: know he's yeah, he's on his way. Bevo is still
- 8:54Speaker 2: thirty four, so he's still got some some guests, something
- 8:57Speaker 2: to take. And not to say that bitter b Of
- 8:58Speaker 2: is like a grampye and you know should be put
- 9:00Speaker 2: out to pass here or it's time for the urn.
- 9:02Speaker 2: But realistically, you know you just can't do this sport
- 9:05Speaker 2: for that long, right. So, speaking of Dmitri Bevall and
- 9:09Speaker 2: our friend here that we just brought up, do you
- 9:12Speaker 2: think Canelo will take a Bevall rematch? Do you think
- 9:14Speaker 2: he'll ever it'll ever happen?
- 9:16Speaker 3: Nah? I mean, Canelo's gonna do what makes financial sense
- 9:21Speaker 3: at this date. I don't think Canal's going to do
- 9:23Speaker 3: anything that the people may want to see if it
- 9:26Speaker 3: doesn't make financial sense. I think past stage of his
- 9:29Speaker 3: career where if he's then get in the ring, it's
- 9:31Speaker 3: gonna be very financial beneficial to him and his family
- 9:34Speaker 3: is camp. I think that's where we are now. So
- 9:36Speaker 3: if that fight makes sense money wise, sure, but if
- 9:39Speaker 3: it doesn't, no shot.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I know, I feel like beav All would
- 9:43Speaker 2: take I don't think Bevoll is uh the person holding
- 9:47Speaker 2: back a rematch there for the two of them, but
- 9:49Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, I mean the Bevall fight against
- 9:53Speaker 2: Canelo happened right after Canelo's biggest win against Caleb Plant,
- 9:58Speaker 2: you know, becoming undisputed super mid a weight. I think
- 10:01Speaker 2: it is uh And you know, those guys are good fighters.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Caleb Blad is a good fighter.
- 10:05Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:06Speaker 2: It's be All just is be All good but also
- 10:08Speaker 2: just bigger. Not to diss him by any means, He's
- 10:11Speaker 2: got the skills, but you know, what's the difference there
- 10:14Speaker 2: between you know, the one weight class and up another.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Does it make that much of a difference to go
- 10:18Speaker 2: up one weight class with a dude who's very good
- 10:21Speaker 2: and also a lot bigger than you.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I don't know. I think it does, man, because when
- 10:24Speaker 3: you're when you're facing one that's sitting at that weight class,
- 10:27Speaker 3: you're the one moving up. It's it is difficult. It
- 10:29Speaker 3: is difficult whenever your body has to go through the
- 10:31Speaker 3: transformations and you're trying to adjust to how your body reacts.
- 10:35Speaker 3: It is a difference that I do agree with one
- 10:37Speaker 3: hundred percent. I'm definitely there. With that being said, though,
- 10:41Speaker 3: when it comes to a potential Caneli fight, the one
- 10:45Speaker 3: thing I will say about Canelo that I cannot say
- 10:47Speaker 3: about others. Canelo is extremely active, so I think there's
- 10:52Speaker 3: a better chance of a Canelo of your videos fight
- 10:56Speaker 3: in the future than in a normal situation. Can you
- 10:59Speaker 3: fight it's like at least twice a year, sometimes three
- 11:02Speaker 3: times a year, So I can respect that. I understand that.
- 11:05Speaker 3: My only issue is when he fights Chance Crawford in
- 11:08Speaker 3: the September. If that flop fight is remotely close in
- 11:12Speaker 3: any way, shape or form, it is not a blowout
- 11:14Speaker 3: one way or another. If that flight is anywhere close,
- 11:18Speaker 3: we're getting a rematch, and so you got to push
- 11:20Speaker 3: the calendar back in another six months.
- 11:22Speaker 2: So that'll be my only concern, right Well, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 2: I'm excited to see what happens and excited to see
- 11:28Speaker 2: what happens with the light heavyweight class. You know, I'll
- 11:30Speaker 2: take another bev All better be of trilogy. You know,
- 11:32Speaker 2: I do think they have a ben Avitez deserves a
- 11:34Speaker 2: shot because he's a great fighter who's proven himself that
- 11:37Speaker 2: he's got some excellent skills, and you know, I think
- 11:40Speaker 2: he deserves the lead competition. So let's see what happens. Well,
- 11:43Speaker 2: we'll be tracking it right here on the Mixed Company podcast.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Speaking of that same event, our friend Shakur Stevenson or
- 11:49Speaker 2: sheck Hool as the British we're pronouncing it. It was
- 11:53Speaker 2: never not funny to hear them say shechckhole when they
- 11:55Speaker 2: were talking about him on the commentary.
- 11:58Speaker 3: He had his.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Opponent drop out due to this. He was supposed to
- 12:00Speaker 2: fight Floyd's Schofield Junior. So the replacement was a British
- 12:04Speaker 2: guy named Josh Padley, who the announcers kept reminding us
- 12:07Speaker 2: is literally an electrician who took the fight on just
- 12:10Speaker 2: a couple of days. Notice he he was a boxer
- 12:13Speaker 2: as well, but he was working, you know, doing an
- 12:16Speaker 2: electrician job a week before dropped. Everything went to the fight.
- 12:20Speaker 2: It ended in around nine Josh Padley's corners throw in
- 12:23Speaker 2: the towel after Shakur knocked Padley down three times with
- 12:25Speaker 2: body shots each time, and of course the haters came
- 12:28Speaker 2: out of the woodwork. My question is, why can't this
- 12:30Speaker 2: kid catch a fucking break like It's not like shake
- 12:32Speaker 2: Kr Stevenson picked his out appointment opponent. He had one
- 12:35Speaker 2: boring fight against Edwin Delo Santo's and so many people
- 12:38Speaker 2: started talking about him like he's the worst fighter in
- 12:40Speaker 2: the world. He's getting criticized for not knocking Padley out
- 12:43Speaker 2: earlier because he's quote nobody, Streaker has never been a
- 12:47Speaker 2: knockout artist or even a big power puncher. You know,
- 12:49Speaker 2: he's a good team fight.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Not but he's talked about as an elite fighter, and
- 12:55Speaker 3: he has elite speed, he has lite hand speed, he
- 12:58Speaker 3: has elite defensive skill, but he doesn't let his hands
- 13:01Speaker 3: go as much. We as boxing fans, like to see
- 13:04Speaker 3: that top tier talent let his hands go more, not
- 13:07Speaker 3: necessarily for knockout power, but just overall on this showcasing
- 13:11Speaker 3: of the elite skill set that he has, we have
- 13:15Speaker 3: not seen Mac consistently enough. So that's where a lot
- 13:18Speaker 3: of the faults come in at with him. That's where
- 13:20Speaker 3: a lot of the claims, ah, he's born. He's that
- 13:24Speaker 3: because offensively, he does not put his skill set to
- 13:29Speaker 3: test as much as we would like for him to see.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Sure, but being a defensive fighter is a thing, and
- 13:34Speaker 2: clearly he has successful with it. I mean, he's got
- 13:36Speaker 2: very good He's one of the best at hitting and
- 13:38Speaker 2: not getting hit. So I don't know, I think his
- 13:41Speaker 2: I don't think the technical skills get the praise they
- 13:44Speaker 2: deserve with this kid, and I think he's just gotten
- 13:46Speaker 2: a He's become an easy target for boxing fans. You know,
- 13:50Speaker 2: if he's gotten the first round knockout against Josh Padley,
- 13:54Speaker 2: what everybody have said, Well, of course he's a nobody,
- 13:56Speaker 2: he's an electrician. He doesn't deserve credit for that. I mean,
- 13:59Speaker 2: I don't know. I think he gets too much ked
- 14:02Speaker 2: he does.
- 14:02Speaker 3: But at the same time, he does bring upon himself
- 14:04Speaker 3: because he talks reference on social media and he's louder
- 14:07Speaker 3: than he probably should be. You can be a defensive fighter,
- 14:11Speaker 3: that's fine, but even the elite defensive fighters were good
- 14:14Speaker 3: offensive fighters in their youth. While he's still young, right,
- 14:17Speaker 3: He's still young and in the top of his athletic prime,
- 14:21Speaker 3: so we expect a little bit more offense from the guy,
- 14:24Speaker 3: especially for how he talks and portrays himself. Now, at
- 14:27Speaker 3: that being said, there's guys who have not fought him
- 14:30Speaker 3: and don't want to fight him, so I do give
- 14:32Speaker 3: him credit for that, but I would like to see
- 14:35Speaker 3: him somehow fight a top tier guy as well, to
- 14:38Speaker 3: see how his skill set matches up with another top
- 14:41Speaker 3: tier guy as well. And feels like we're never going
- 14:43Speaker 3: to get him in tank in the ring and feels
- 14:45Speaker 3: like that's never happened for a lot of different reasons,
- 14:47Speaker 3: but the biggest issue is we need secure to be
- 14:50Speaker 3: a star, and the way to be a star is
- 14:53Speaker 3: you gotta be able to mix up your defensive skills
- 14:56Speaker 3: with a little bit more offense. And until we get that,
- 15:00Speaker 3: he shouldn't be on anyone else's card. He should be
- 15:02Speaker 3: headlining a card with his talent, and that's probably the
- 15:05Speaker 3: problem that we have.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Also true, yeah, I mean, but although the tiny headline,
- 15:10Speaker 2: the last time I believe the headline is card was
- 15:11Speaker 2: that Edwin dela Centro's fight where everybody just lost their ship.
- 15:14Speaker 2: I mean, you know, he said that his hand was injured,
- 15:17Speaker 2: he wasn't moving around, but again, Edward dela Centros couldn't
- 15:20Speaker 2: get couldn't lay a hand on him either, So I
- 15:22Speaker 2: don't know. I think I'm a little bit more of
- 15:24Speaker 2: a core fan than a lot of folks are, and
- 15:26Speaker 2: I think he gets more hate than he deserves. But
- 15:29Speaker 2: he's still young, you know, He's he's only he's only
- 15:32Speaker 2: retired and unretired ones, so he's still got a lot
- 15:35Speaker 2: of time left in the tank.
- 15:36Speaker 3: So to speak absolutely.
- 15:38Speaker 2: So, yeah, guys retired unretired all the time, so you know,
- 15:42Speaker 2: he's probably got He's probably got a couple more retirements
- 15:44Speaker 2: under his belt before he stops boxing.
- 15:47Speaker 3: He ain't going nowhere, man, I mean the money is
- 15:48Speaker 3: too good, and that's his skill set. Like he's not
- 15:51Speaker 3: like a person does something else in box on the side,
- 15:55Speaker 3: Like that's not how this goes. Like this is what
- 15:56Speaker 3: he does, this is his this is his career path,
- 15:59Speaker 3: So he ain't going nowhere. I wouldn't worry too much
- 16:00Speaker 3: about it. My biggest thing is this, we want to
- 16:02Speaker 3: see boxers box, right, We want to see guys face
- 16:05Speaker 3: off against elite talent to show where they're at. And
- 16:08Speaker 3: until we see him fight a top tier guy, it's
- 16:12Speaker 3: gonna be the same old, same one. Now, I will
- 16:14Speaker 3: say this, there's guys who have not wanted to fight
- 16:17Speaker 3: him or have you know, said no, I'm cool. So
- 16:20Speaker 3: I understand that. I do get that as well, and
- 16:23Speaker 3: I think there's some blame that is a little unjust.
- 16:26Speaker 3: But for a guy with his skill set and for
- 16:29Speaker 3: how he carries himself, you would think he's the best
- 16:32Speaker 3: fighter in the world, and that's not the case.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know he's also think about him. Credit
- 16:38Speaker 2: is he doesn't care about the hate at all, Like
- 16:41Speaker 2: it just rolls right off the shoulder. He just boops forward.
- 16:44Speaker 2: And yeah he's got a mouth on him. But you
- 16:46Speaker 2: know he's.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Emotional too because whenever it gets too much he retires
- 16:50Speaker 3: and stuff like. It's always something. But again he's I
- 16:54Speaker 3: like him. I think he's extremely talented. I just want
- 16:57Speaker 3: to see because all right, we're gonna talk about defensive fighters.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Sweet Peet was a defensive fighter, but he was losto
- 17:02Speaker 3: offensive when he needed to. Obviously was a defensive fighter,
- 17:06Speaker 3: but he was offensive when he needed to. We can't
- 17:08Speaker 3: compare Shakur those two guys. If there's not enough offense
- 17:13Speaker 3: being put on, especially at this age, at this age,
- 17:16Speaker 3: you see more.
- 17:18Speaker 2: That's fair, that's fair. He's still he's got a long
- 17:19Speaker 2: way to go, so you know, I hope, uh, I
- 17:22Speaker 2: hope he takes more league competition and hope we see
- 17:24Speaker 2: more of him in the future. So all right, to
- 17:27Speaker 2: see there's a lot of international news here in the
- 17:29Speaker 2: boxing is that next up? Just something I want to
- 17:31Speaker 2: talk about, uh this coming March seventh in London Brough.
- 17:35Speaker 2: We've gotten old women's books and match at the Royal
- 17:37Speaker 2: albert Hole Natasha Choones and Norm Price. We're facing off
- 17:40Speaker 2: of the women's Will to Wait titles of the World.
- 17:43Speaker 2: With that said, that's it up, I've done, I've done.
- 17:45Speaker 3: You got you gotta practice that on the show. You
- 17:48Speaker 3: gotta practice that before you come on. You can't just win,
- 17:51Speaker 3: you can't.
- 17:54Speaker 2: The referees will be Alig Pepper, Pagan Doctor who I've done,
- 17:57Speaker 2: I've done.
- 18:01Speaker 3: You can't wing that. You gotta practice that.
- 18:04Speaker 2: That's good for next For next episode, I'll find another. Yeah, look,
- 18:08Speaker 2: we support women's boxing on the show. Every fighter in
- 18:10Speaker 2: this event will be a woman. It'll be broadcast on
- 18:12Speaker 2: Sky Sports in England naturally, but here in the US
- 18:15Speaker 2: it will be broadcast on it be streaming on Peacock,
- 18:19Speaker 2: which is interesting. So we've talked before about how I
- 18:21Speaker 2: think it's a mistake for Top Rank boxing to leave
- 18:23Speaker 2: ESPN and move to a streaming platform. I hate the
- 18:26Speaker 2: idea that boxing will be less accessible for people with
- 18:28Speaker 2: a basic cable package or for sports bars that just
- 18:31Speaker 2: have ESPN on all the time. But if it's gonna happen,
- 18:35Speaker 2: I think more streaming platforms UH should get into the
- 18:38Speaker 2: should get into streaming boxing as much as possible, so
- 18:41Speaker 2: that Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson fight was trash. It
- 18:43Speaker 2: wasn't real boxing. No love to those Paul guys. I
- 18:45Speaker 2: hope they go away forever. But one interesting thing about
- 18:49Speaker 2: it was that it aired on Netflix. So if top
- 18:51Speaker 2: Brank leaves ESPN to go to the zone, which few
- 18:54Speaker 2: normies in the US know went thing about, honestly, uh,
- 18:57Speaker 2: we're gonna lose a lot of potential audiences. So but
- 18:59Speaker 2: if there are more fights on streaming apps, maybe people
- 19:02Speaker 2: might be signed up for the Sorry, more fights on
- 19:04Speaker 2: apps that people are already signed up for, all the better.
- 19:07Speaker 3: So I don't know.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I mean, I know the Peacock has done an event
- 19:11Speaker 2: before with I believe these same ladies that I don't
- 19:15Speaker 2: know the history very well. I think they had a
- 19:16Speaker 2: fight before. This is a rematch in Peacock stream.
- 19:18Speaker 3: But so I don't know.
- 19:20Speaker 2: What do you think, Like, what's the best way to
- 19:21Speaker 2: get eyeballs on these fights in the era of streaming
- 19:25Speaker 2: potentially streaming.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Only, Well, that's just gonna be the norm. I think
- 19:29Speaker 3: the best thing to do is market right, So if
- 19:31Speaker 3: you're gonna have fights with streaming or on streaming. You
- 19:34Speaker 3: got to cross promote your product, so during podcasts, during
- 19:37Speaker 3: other events, etc. Etc. Like podcasts of the new radio.
- 19:41Speaker 3: YouTube is similar to the mix between radio and like
- 19:45Speaker 3: movies and the news. So you guys crossed promote your
- 19:49Speaker 3: product in a lot of different forms that you normally
- 19:52Speaker 3: wouldn't and then get other people's interests that way. I
- 19:55Speaker 3: think that's the biggest thing, is cross promote your product
- 19:57Speaker 3: and a lot of different forms, not just oh, putting
- 20:00Speaker 3: it up on a twenty second clip at the end
- 20:02Speaker 3: of another sporting event. That ain't gonna work. You gotta
- 20:05Speaker 3: cross promote the product in a lot of different ways,
- 20:07Speaker 3: and there's a lot different avenues to do that. Like
- 20:09Speaker 3: you mentioned, there's so many different streaming services, there's so
- 20:13Speaker 3: many different other sporting events out there where I think
- 20:16Speaker 3: it can be done executed properly. However, this is the
- 20:19Speaker 3: new norm, so get used to it. We're not going
- 20:22Speaker 3: back to regular network TV. That's We're gonna have more
- 20:25Speaker 3: and more streaming than ever before. They want it that way.
- 20:28Speaker 3: It's easier for them to control things that way, it's
- 20:31Speaker 3: cheaper for them to operate that way. So that's what
- 20:33Speaker 3: we're gonna do.
- 20:35Speaker 2: I I would be more on board with getting used
- 20:38Speaker 2: to this new model if there was more outreach, more
- 20:41Speaker 2: of a way for people to get into these fights,
- 20:44Speaker 2: to watch these fights easily and honestly, Like, let's be real,
- 20:47Speaker 2: it's interesting that these fights are streaming on Peacock, which
- 20:50Speaker 2: is an NBC affiliate or whatever you call it. It's
- 20:53Speaker 2: like the NBC's streaming. But how many people actually pay
- 20:56Speaker 2: for the peacock be dead? I don't know anybody.
- 20:59Speaker 3: Personally, so I have Peacock, but it's for other I
- 21:03Speaker 3: mean a lot of times things come in a bundle,
- 21:05Speaker 3: so like Peacock, Hulu, whatever, whatever, for like a certain
- 21:09Speaker 3: set price a month. But also live sports is a
- 21:13Speaker 3: premium that is a in general when it comes to
- 21:17Speaker 3: putting on products on air. So that's why you see
- 21:20Speaker 3: Peacock things on there and on Netflix. There's only a
- 21:24Speaker 3: handful of live content that's on TV in general. So
- 21:28Speaker 3: that's why these streaming companies are jumping up to take
- 21:31Speaker 3: boxing because there's not a whole lot of other live
- 21:33Speaker 3: content items on air. It's not what Netflix their model is.
- 21:38Speaker 3: Put something on there and the whole thing's on there
- 21:40Speaker 3: so you can watch it at once. But when that
- 21:42Speaker 3: you run out of You run out of stuff very quickly.
- 21:44Speaker 3: So that's why you're seeing them get into sports. Peacock
- 21:47Speaker 3: is going to be the same thing with a lot
- 21:49Speaker 3: of events going forward, so to do not be surprised.
- 21:51Speaker 3: They have more boxing matches in the future, and it's
- 21:54Speaker 3: not that expensive. You can get the regular version four
- 21:57Speaker 3: nine nine a month.
- 21:58Speaker 2: I think, okay, YouTube as well. YouTube can do live events,
- 22:02Speaker 2: they can do YouTube boxing. I mean this, this sport
- 22:05Speaker 2: has to get creative. If it's gonna go all streaming,
- 22:07Speaker 2: it has to get creative in the way that it
- 22:09Speaker 2: reaches new fans because you're you're just completely shutting out
- 22:13Speaker 2: all the grampies that don't know how to download a
- 22:15Speaker 2: new app or sit up for you know, I if somebody,
- 22:18Speaker 2: somebody's grand kids don't help them with this, they're gone.
- 22:20Speaker 2: They're not gonna They're not gonna see you know, just
- 22:22Speaker 2: the top right match from now on.
- 22:25Speaker 3: I would love to see Amazon get involved. I think
- 22:27Speaker 3: Amazon does things the best when it comes to sports,
- 22:30Speaker 3: and they sports as an advertisement situation, not necessarily. I
- 22:34Speaker 3: mean they're focused on the event, that's not a problem,
- 22:37Speaker 3: but they use it as a marketing campaign for Amazon
- 22:40Speaker 3: for those three hours, So I like to see Amazon there.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Their stream is always good, the picture is always clear.
- 22:46Speaker 3: You know, they do it well, and it's easy to
- 22:48Speaker 3: find when you go on Amazon app. It's literally the
- 22:50Speaker 3: first thing you see, so you ain't got to fish
- 22:52Speaker 3: around whatever. So I would I would hope if they
- 22:55Speaker 3: do go that route, that's where they go.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm still I'm still kind of down
- 22:59Speaker 2: on the whole thing because on February fourteenth, when I
- 23:02Speaker 2: was in Austin, you know, I was watching that trying
- 23:04Speaker 2: to find the Keshon Davis versus Dennis baroncheck fight, and
- 23:07Speaker 2: you know, I was bar hopping. So I went to
- 23:09Speaker 2: three different places, you know, to watch a couple of fights,
- 23:11Speaker 2: and then every place I went to had ESPN on.
- 23:14Speaker 2: You know. There's the last place I went to there
- 23:16Speaker 2: was this Mexican restaurant that had a giant TV. It
- 23:19Speaker 2: happened to be on ESPN too. It was kind of dead.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I was like, hey man, you know, can you just
- 23:23Speaker 2: put it on regular ESPN? They said cool, you know,
- 23:25Speaker 2: and that's what I like. You know, if just going
- 23:27Speaker 2: to a regular, regular, regular bar right the team they
- 23:31Speaker 2: have a TV that's not being used, I'm like can
- 23:32Speaker 2: you put the fight on. They're really cool about it.
- 23:34Speaker 2: So that's something that I'm gonna miss, and you know,
- 23:37Speaker 2: we'll just see how what what ended up what ends
- 23:39Speaker 2: up happening with top rank in the future. But yeah,
- 23:42Speaker 2: it's it's it's it seems like kind of a bummer
- 23:45Speaker 2: and I don't know. We'll just see how it goes.
- 23:48Speaker 2: We'll keep you updated on major developments. Okay, speaking of
- 23:52Speaker 2: major fights, the next major fight coming up if you're
- 23:55Speaker 2: listening to this on the if you're listening to the
- 23:57Speaker 2: show on the day comes out, it will be in
- 23:58Speaker 2: a couple of days, Saturday, March first, Gervanta, Tank Davis.
- 24:02Speaker 2: We're fighting Lamont roach in Brooklyn. Now I'm gonna say something,
- 24:05Speaker 2: but I'm sure I promise you was gonna come back
- 24:07Speaker 2: to the fight.
- 24:08Speaker 3: So.
- 24:08Speaker 2: I love going to see movies in the theater, Jamison.
- 24:11Speaker 2: I know you're not much of a theater guy, but
- 24:13Speaker 2: I love. One of my favorite things is going in
- 24:15Speaker 2: the movies. But for those of us who do, there's
- 24:17Speaker 2: a particular experience we have to deal with. Sometimes it's
- 24:20Speaker 2: occasionally there's a major movie coming out and we have
- 24:22Speaker 2: to see the exact same trailer over and over like
- 24:26Speaker 2: sometimes six months before the damn movie even opens, and
- 24:29Speaker 2: when that happens, I'm just dying for the movie to
- 24:31Speaker 2: finally come out so I don't have to hear about
- 24:32Speaker 2: it again. That's kind of where I am with this fight.
- 24:35Speaker 2: To be honest, I'm happy that it's here because I'm
- 24:37Speaker 2: kind of sick of hearing about it talking about it. It
- 24:40Speaker 2: was supposed to happen in December and Houston, but got delayed,
- 24:42Speaker 2: And it's a little hard to be excited about because, yeah,
- 24:45Speaker 2: Lamont Roach is a talented fighter, but this isn't something
- 24:48Speaker 2: like taking Garcia or better.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Ba I no, no, I want to see this fight, man.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I was trying to be nice about it.
- 24:54Speaker 3: This fight we know, as great as Tank is and
- 24:57Speaker 3: as gray as his record is and his performances is
- 24:59Speaker 3: a big and we want to see him fight certain
- 25:02Speaker 3: fighters we don't want to see. This is a hand picked,
- 25:05Speaker 3: you know, easy fight to get by and to figure
- 25:07Speaker 3: out what's next or guess he's retiring after this fight whatever.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Anybody trying to see this fight, man, I'm sorry, we're
- 25:12Speaker 3: not here for that.
- 25:13Speaker 2: This isn't something yeah, like if you tell me that,
- 25:17Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, we're we're talking about Canelo versus
- 25:20Speaker 2: Bud Crawford now, which could happen in September, and I'm
- 25:23Speaker 2: stoked about it, Like I can't wait. This fight has
- 25:25Speaker 2: just been dragged on and on and there's like the
- 25:27Speaker 2: drama with tank sing it was canceled and blah blah blah.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And I'm sure that when I'm sitting in front of
- 25:34Speaker 2: my TV, you know, watching the matches, I'm gonna get
- 25:36Speaker 2: hyped up. But right now it's it's very hard to
- 25:38Speaker 2: get excited. So we want to see Tank Fish occur.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Anything outside of that, we're not really excited about. What
- 25:46Speaker 2: about I'm not trying to not trying to see anything else.
- 25:50Speaker 3: We know the fight we want as boxing fans, and
- 25:53Speaker 3: this is the thing that drew a lot of people
- 25:55Speaker 3: away during excuse the Floyd era, because people want to
- 26:00Speaker 3: he fights that they want to see. We don't want
- 26:02Speaker 3: to get. We don't want side orders. Like if I
- 26:06Speaker 3: go to restaurant, I want the main thing. I want
- 26:08Speaker 3: the main entree. I'm not here for the mass potatoes.
- 26:11Speaker 3: I'm not here for the Brussels sprouts. I'm not here
- 26:14Speaker 3: for the French fries. I'm here if I go to
- 26:16Speaker 3: out there, go out for entree, and unfortunately when it
- 26:19Speaker 3: comes to Tank, it's been interesting because the promotion's been different. Uh,
- 26:24Speaker 3: you know, the Lerb thing and the Floyd thing is
- 26:27Speaker 3: always something that goes on in the background. It's never
- 26:30Speaker 3: a smooth moment. Then of course himself, he's you know,
- 26:33Speaker 3: he's his own outside of the ring issues. Also, I
- 26:37Speaker 3: just want to see him fight someone that's on his
- 26:40Speaker 3: similar talent level, that's all, and whatever happens when that happens.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't be as down on this fight if
- 26:47Speaker 2: Tank was a guy that fou twice a here. If
- 26:49Speaker 2: you thought, okay, well yeah, yeah, yeah, it's like sure,
- 26:51Speaker 2: take take a tun a fight, take whatever.
- 26:53Speaker 3: You know.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I like, I just enjoy watching fights, and I enjoy
- 26:55Speaker 2: watching Tank. So if we thought that maybe he was
- 26:58Speaker 2: gonna fight at least one time this year, I wouldn't
- 27:01Speaker 2: be as like about it. So I don't know.
- 27:04Speaker 3: I mean, it can't be one of the faces of
- 27:05Speaker 3: the sport and fight as sparingly as he does and
- 27:11Speaker 3: then hand pick guys while doing it. Now, if you
- 27:12Speaker 3: just told me, hey, he was fighting Secure in two weeks, okay, cool,
- 27:16Speaker 3: all right, cool whatever, do whatever you want to do
- 27:18Speaker 3: after that, because that's a that's a big name fight.
- 27:21Speaker 3: People want to see it. You know, people know about
- 27:23Speaker 3: you guys, the whole nine. That's fine, but man nah
- 27:29Speaker 3: and then the hole ill will retire and my mental
- 27:31Speaker 3: health and blah blah blah. All right, I understand mental
- 27:34Speaker 3: health is a very important thing. I am not here
- 27:36Speaker 3: down play that. However, However, we can't come back four
- 27:41Speaker 3: months from now talking about the best in the world.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Blah blah blah. I don't fight fighting. It can't be that.
- 27:48Speaker 3: So we got to figure out what do we want
- 27:50Speaker 3: to do and go from there.
- 27:53Speaker 2: What about a Tank Rangersier rematch, that's something you'd be
- 27:56Speaker 2: excited about.
- 27:57Speaker 3: No, but that's gonna probably be the case because it
- 27:59Speaker 3: makes a lot of money. Yea Ryan has a huge
- 28:01Speaker 3: fan base and Tank is Tank, so yeah, that would
- 28:05Speaker 3: be well. But even then, like we know who's gonna
- 28:08Speaker 3: win that fight with all due respect, like Tank's a
- 28:11Speaker 3: better boxer and he you know, Ryan's Ryan, so even
- 28:16Speaker 3: and if Ryan is not on anything he would he
- 28:19Speaker 3: shouldn't be. Yeah, I would favorite Tank, and Tank probably
- 28:22Speaker 3: gets them out of there again. But with all that
- 28:25Speaker 3: being said, we want to see our guys fight the
- 28:28Speaker 3: competition they're supposed to fight. Man, at the end of
- 28:31Speaker 3: the day, we don't want to see ducky and dodging.
- 28:34Speaker 3: And I think that's a big issue that has driven
- 28:37Speaker 3: a lot of casual fans away because how many times
- 28:40Speaker 3: do you spend seventy eighty nine dollars in a pay
- 28:43Speaker 3: per view for a fight you don't want to see.
- 28:45Speaker 2: That's wild, that is yeah, that's absolutely wild. I think
- 28:48Speaker 2: the thing that's gonna continue killing boxing, especially in the
- 28:51Speaker 2: era of streaming, is really expensive pay per views.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Yeah, like pay per views and just ram subscriptions that
- 28:57Speaker 3: you really don't want, Like Tank is a guy that
- 29:00Speaker 3: cancel a pay per view, But we gotta have a
- 29:02Speaker 3: better matchup, man, Like I'm not excited about Yeah. I
- 29:05Speaker 3: like seeing Tank fight. It's probably gonna win, probably went
- 29:08Speaker 3: within the first seven rounds, that's great, But I ain't
- 29:11Speaker 3: really here for that, Like I want to see our fighters.
- 29:14Speaker 3: When we think of great fighters, we think about the
- 29:17Speaker 3: guys they fought. They didn't get to fifty wins because
- 29:20Speaker 3: they fought forever. They nah, they fought guys, they had
- 29:23Speaker 3: battles with really good other Hall of Fame caliber fighters
- 29:26Speaker 3: and we've gotten away from that.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Yeah, like when was this fight announced for Like, like I said,
- 29:31Speaker 2: it was supposed to happen in December. Did we start
- 29:33Speaker 2: talking about in October? I think so now, Yeah, it's
- 29:36Speaker 2: we had a whole last New Year. We had you know,
- 29:38Speaker 2: we had a whole last Halloween, Christmas and everything. So yeah, well, yeah,
- 29:44Speaker 2: if you could pick his tanks next three upon hus
- 29:47Speaker 2: because he says he's gonna retire probably at the end
- 29:49Speaker 2: of twenty twenty five or twenty six, and well yeah,
- 29:53Speaker 2: let's let's start. Let's start here, who would you pick
- 29:55Speaker 2: for his next three? You know, he said chakor for
- 29:56Speaker 2: sure who else he got?
- 29:58Speaker 3: You know, even if you throw a Ryan are seeing there.
- 30:01Speaker 3: I wouldn't be opposed to it. I get it, Like
- 30:06Speaker 3: I understand why that would happen, right, well, I would
- 30:08Speaker 3: understand it. But also like Devin Hanne.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Has been quiet, Den has been quiet, Yeah.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Like real quiet. Still a name, a lot going on
- 30:19Speaker 3: on that side, But I wouldn't be opposed to it.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Don't think it would ever happen, but I wouldn't be opposed. Also,
- 30:28Speaker 3: it's a fight that Devin Haity would need to win
- 30:30Speaker 3: or fight really well into for us really care about
- 30:33Speaker 3: him again, but he's a guy that does have a
- 30:35Speaker 3: skill set that you know, we allegedly should take seriously.
- 30:40Speaker 3: So I'm just saying, when it comes to these type
- 30:45Speaker 3: of fighters, guys that have a Hall of Fame type
- 30:48Speaker 3: of trajectory, we should be seeing them fight each other.
- 30:52Speaker 3: I don't want to see any more tune up fights.
- 30:54Speaker 3: I don't want somebody fighting someone too young or at
- 30:57Speaker 3: the end of the road. We need to see guys
- 30:59Speaker 3: fighting while they're in the peak of their powers until
- 31:02Speaker 3: we get that. I'm not really cool with it. Like,
- 31:05Speaker 3: I don't want to hear anyone talking about the best
- 31:06Speaker 3: in the world, the best in this and that, because honestly,
- 31:10Speaker 3: we're not seeing you fight the best guys in the world.
- 31:12Speaker 3: So how can you call yourself the best in the
- 31:14Speaker 3: world of top for top or powder pound number one
- 31:17Speaker 3: if you're not fighting the best guys, I don't want
- 31:18Speaker 3: to hear it.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Well, Tank has been sticking to a story about retirement,
- 31:23Speaker 2: So here's here's one for you. What are the better odds?
- 31:26Speaker 2: What's more likely that Lamont Roach wins or the Tank
- 31:29Speaker 2: stays retired? What were you bet on? Ah? Well, look here,
- 31:33Speaker 2: I don't think we're expecting alamant roach upset boxers.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Boxers are threatened to retire and come back so quickly.
- 31:39Speaker 3: It's all about money man for the most part. Unfortunately,
- 31:43Speaker 3: the money part of boxing is what drives guys, right,
- 31:46Speaker 3: So when the money runs low, guys come back to fighting.
- 31:48Speaker 3: That's how that's how it goes. Not necessarily cool about it,
- 31:51Speaker 3: but that's just the nature of the beast. Yeah.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Well, at the end of the day, Tank is probably
- 31:56Speaker 2: gonna have my favorite moment in recent boxing history. Do
- 31:59Speaker 2: you remember when he Romero I think that was a
- 32:01Speaker 2: couple of years ago in the middle of the fight,
- 32:04Speaker 2: in the middle of around Rollie's corner, shouts in and says,
- 32:07Speaker 2: Fox and Roly you can out box Tank, and Tank,
- 32:10Speaker 2: while moving, turns his head at the corner and says,
- 32:12Speaker 2: shut your pitch ass up and keeps fighting. That was hilarious.
- 32:17Speaker 3: I'm a fan. I love, but I'm tired of giving
- 32:21Speaker 3: these guys passes because at the end of the day,
- 32:24Speaker 3: the guys we grew up watching like aust Valeha gets
- 32:27Speaker 3: a lot of ship from a lot of people for
- 32:29Speaker 3: a lot of reasons, but he fought everyone like every
- 32:33Speaker 3: He didn't duck anyone like. He had a lot of
- 32:35Speaker 3: things you can go and say about him, and there's
- 32:38Speaker 3: a hole of things we don't need to get into
- 32:39Speaker 3: today because that's not the time or to play. However,
- 32:42Speaker 3: he fought everyone. You go to his Wikipedia. He fought everyone,
- 32:49Speaker 3: all right, Floyd for the most part, fought everyone. Even
- 32:52Speaker 3: though Timmy may not have been right, he fought everyone.
- 32:56Speaker 3: These new school guys, I'm not really rolling with it,
- 32:59Speaker 3: and I get it. Some of it is Floyd's issue
- 33:02Speaker 3: because he pick and choose who to fight with time
- 33:04Speaker 3: to fight. These guys don't fighting people in general. They
- 33:07Speaker 3: just saying no cool, So I don't I don't know, man,
- 33:10Speaker 3: I'm not really happy about this right now.
- 33:13Speaker 2: We you know, we we talked. We talked about the
- 33:15Speaker 2: sport because we love it and we want it to
- 33:17Speaker 2: be better. You know, we're not We're not boxing haters.
- 33:19Speaker 2: You know, we're here saying like we want the sport
- 33:21Speaker 2: to grow and be you know, wait, man, I just
- 33:25Speaker 2: realized we're officially watched this hell and be like in
- 33:27Speaker 2: our day, back in our day.
- 33:31Speaker 3: It's two though.
- 33:31Speaker 2: It's true.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Though it was very true, like dale Ya fought multiple
- 33:34Speaker 3: times a year and fought big names almost every time,
- 33:39Speaker 3: like looking back from like ninety three on to like,
- 33:44Speaker 3: oh he fought Packing on like oh six or oh SnO,
- 33:48Speaker 3: he fought Floyd O seven. I think he fought packing
- 33:50Speaker 3: on eight. So for a fifteen year time span, he
- 33:54Speaker 3: fought any and everybody multiple times a year. I gotta
- 33:58Speaker 3: respect that. Like I said, I'm I'm not the biggest
- 34:00Speaker 3: Dea fan per se, but as a boxer and for
- 34:05Speaker 3: what you're supposed to be as a boxer, I have
- 34:07Speaker 3: I have to respect that.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Sure, Yeah, he fought me with her oh seven Pacio
- 34:11Speaker 2: eight and just looked it up.
- 34:12Speaker 3: So yeah, well he's bought everybody and that was going
- 34:17Speaker 3: out the door. So in his prime, there's no one
- 34:20Speaker 3: he turned down. There's no one he said. No, I'm
- 34:23Speaker 3: cool but that But that's how, that's how, that's what
- 34:26Speaker 3: boxing fans are used to. So when you give them
- 34:28Speaker 3: something different, they don't necessarily know how to react in
- 34:31Speaker 3: a in a good manner.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Jue, Well, you know, uh, we got a lot of
- 34:37Speaker 2: issues with the sport as it stands, and like I said,
- 34:39Speaker 2: we're here to try to make it better. We want
- 34:40Speaker 2: boxing to be and it's prime like it used to be.
- 34:42Speaker 2: And uh, you know, the sport that I love with
- 34:45Speaker 2: all my heart, the only spart I've ever truly cared about. So, guys,
- 34:49Speaker 2: let's get more, more fights, more fights.
- 34:52Speaker 3: More often.
- 34:52Speaker 2: That's what we really need. I think that's the starting point.
- 34:54Speaker 2: That's bare minimum is have guys fight at least once
- 34:57Speaker 2: a year twice its possible. But anyway, so cool. No,
- 35:01Speaker 2: that's a good discussion. Let's move on to something different,
- 35:04Speaker 2: you know, right. Next up is our pop Pugilism segment,
- 35:07Speaker 2: in which we discussed a movie, TV show or documentary
- 35:09Speaker 2: about boxing. Today, we're going back to the world of
- 35:13Speaker 2: period pieces, the world of biopics, because we're discussing Cinderella
- 35:17Speaker 2: Man from two thousand and five, directed by Ron Howard,
- 35:20Speaker 2: starring Russell Crowe, Rene Zellweger, Paul Giamatti, Craig Bierco. The
- 35:25Speaker 2: movie made one hundred and eight million worldwide on a
- 35:27Speaker 2: budget of eighty eight million. And this Russell Crowe plays
- 35:30Speaker 2: Jim Braddock, an Irish boxer who fought during the Great Depression,
- 35:33Speaker 2: and he's best known for a major improbable comeback after
- 35:39Speaker 2: giving up boxing, having to work as a long shortman,
- 35:41Speaker 2: defeat his family, and then getting the chance to fight
- 35:45Speaker 2: Max Bear for the heavyweight championship in nineteen thirty five,
- 35:48Speaker 2: which he won. So we'll get into the details of
- 35:51Speaker 2: the movie and a little bit of history from the era.
- 35:53Speaker 2: But first, Jamison, what did you think about this film?
- 35:56Speaker 3: Right? Movie? You could tell the movie had a big
- 35:58Speaker 3: budget because it was filmed like it shot like you
- 36:00Speaker 3: you know, that was the main thing. It puts you
- 36:03Speaker 3: back on those times, like the Great Depression times unfortunately,
- 36:06Speaker 3: which was like basically about one hundred years ago. In
- 36:08Speaker 3: a sense, it puts you back and there whenever a
- 36:11Speaker 3: movie can do that, it's doing something right. The filling,
- 36:14Speaker 3: the settings, the line they had basically a line of
- 36:18Speaker 3: people wanting to work and they only picked like five
- 36:21Speaker 3: or seven people to actually work. It puts you and
- 36:25Speaker 3: you know, it puts you in the heart of that,
- 36:26Speaker 3: and that's really good to capture something like that from
- 36:29Speaker 3: that from that period of time. So I thought that
- 36:31Speaker 3: was really done well. Thought the boxing seems were pretty good,
- 36:34Speaker 3: especially four capturing how boxing was back then. So no,
- 36:38Speaker 3: I think overall a really good movie, a really really
- 36:40Speaker 3: good film.
- 36:41Speaker 2: It's got really good production values. Yeah, I mean the
- 36:44Speaker 2: Great Depression, you know, they showed the breadlines, you know,
- 36:46Speaker 2: having to go into the government welfare office just to
- 36:50Speaker 2: make you know, get a couple of bucks to get
- 36:52Speaker 2: you through, to pay the light bill, to pay for milk,
- 36:54Speaker 2: all that stuff.
- 36:55Speaker 3: You know.
- 36:55Speaker 2: I've never seen the movie. I was in no rush
- 36:57Speaker 2: to see it. I never get excited about Ron Howard movies.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I like Apollo thirteen, that's pretty good, but anything else
- 37:03Speaker 2: I've never He's a great filmmaker, you know, he's had
- 37:06Speaker 2: an excellent career. He's an award winner. So no hate,
- 37:08Speaker 2: you know, no disrespect. But I don't know. I just
- 37:10Speaker 2: never rush out to the theater to see the new
- 37:13Speaker 2: Ron Howard joint. But I do. I appreciate getting to
- 37:16Speaker 2: watch this one. And I actually love this segment in
- 37:18Speaker 2: the for the podcast because it introduces me to new
- 37:21Speaker 2: movies that I haven't seen yet. So yeah, I liked.
- 37:25Speaker 2: I liked that it took place in the Great Depression,
- 37:28Speaker 2: that it showed a little bit of life in that era.
- 37:30Speaker 2: I liked that the story picked up right when Jim
- 37:33Speaker 2: Braddock was on his way out, so we didn't have
- 37:35Speaker 2: to deal with like old ass Russell Crowe playing a
- 37:38Speaker 2: nineteen year old version of himself with a backwards baseball cap.
- 37:41Speaker 2: To indicate that he was young. Right, So yeah, there's
- 37:45Speaker 2: that period when you know, a lot of the movie
- 37:48Speaker 2: is him struggling to make ends meet. So a lot
- 37:51Speaker 2: of boxing movies that we've talked about could be formulaic.
- 37:53Speaker 2: You know, you see the rise, you see the fall,
- 37:55Speaker 2: you see the comeback. So I appreciate any kind of
- 37:59Speaker 2: little little dv from the formula.
- 38:01Speaker 3: So that would also like dog fighting on empty stomach
- 38:07Speaker 3: sounds crazy.
- 38:09Speaker 2: That's something I never Okay, this movie. And also what else, Oh,
- 38:12Speaker 2: the Clarissa Shields movie where when she was a kid,
- 38:16Speaker 2: you know, she grew up in Flint, poor as hell
- 38:18Speaker 2: and was training and eating like, I don't know, scraps
- 38:21Speaker 2: at home like Kansa do. I have no clue how
- 38:24Speaker 2: somebody can get into fighting, fighting shape without eating like protein,
- 38:30Speaker 2: you know, veggies and all that stuff. Like I'll never
- 38:32Speaker 2: understand that. Like I was, I was, I was training,
- 38:36Speaker 2: going to the gym and sparring. You know, I was
- 38:38Speaker 2: eating you know, my counting, my macros. I was eating protein.
- 38:42Speaker 2: I was eating lentils, beans, brown rice and everything, and
- 38:44Speaker 2: even so sometimes I was lightheaded after after staring.
- 38:49Speaker 3: Yeah you know what I mean. Yeah, I can't imagine
- 38:51Speaker 3: boxing and not eating or haven't eaten a day, or
- 38:55Speaker 3: I can't. I can imagine. However, if you ask, your
- 38:58Speaker 3: body's used to and that's which boys used to, and
- 39:01Speaker 3: you kind of just go the f flow. Plus you're
- 39:04Speaker 3: fighting for basically food, you're basically fighting for survival. So
- 39:08Speaker 3: I I understand it. I think it's messed up, but
- 39:10Speaker 3: I definitely understand it.
- 39:12Speaker 2: Sure, But how the hell do you build muscle? What
- 39:14Speaker 2: do you build it out of?
- 39:15Speaker 3: You build muscle, you already have the muscle. You're just
- 39:18Speaker 3: fighting on reserves basically.
- 39:19Speaker 2: I guess that's true. I guess that's yeah, I guess
- 39:22Speaker 2: I guess that's a good point. He's he's not like
- 39:24Speaker 2: in fighting camp, you know, every day and you know,
- 39:26Speaker 2: eating eight hundred calories. I guess he's already in shape
- 39:29Speaker 2: and just kind of it's like when you don't really
- 39:32Speaker 2: you don't really start to death if you don't eat
- 39:33Speaker 2: for three days, right, your body just kind of feeds
- 39:35Speaker 2: off itself. But yeah, that's just something I'll I'll never understand.
- 39:39Speaker 2: It's it's wild and uh yeah, like I said, some
- 39:41Speaker 2: days I would have a full breakfast, but it just
- 39:43Speaker 2: wasn't enough and I'm at the gym just kind of
- 39:45Speaker 2: like woo a little a little woozy. So yeah, and
- 39:49Speaker 2: to get into the this is just going to the
- 39:51Speaker 2: gym to get into an actual ring. Holy shit, that's
- 39:54Speaker 2: that's wild. So uh, but yeah, Crow has is an
- 39:58Speaker 2: excellent performance. You know, well if we forget, because he's
- 40:01Speaker 2: been kind of coasting doing like direct to direct to video,
- 40:05Speaker 2: kind of secret movies as they called things he didn't
- 40:08Speaker 2: even know or they fly under the radar you see
- 40:10Speaker 2: him pop up on streaming on two B or whatever.
- 40:12Speaker 2: But the man is a great actor and he's got
- 40:15Speaker 2: a you know, he shines in this movie. There's one
- 40:18Speaker 2: scene where he goes to like a social club full
- 40:21Speaker 2: of boxing promoters and basically begs for money to make
- 40:24Speaker 2: ends meet. That didn't actually happen in real life, but
- 40:26Speaker 2: he's very affecting. You know, I'm not made of stone. Okay,
- 40:29Speaker 2: my liver is, but I'm not. You know, I was,
- 40:31Speaker 2: it got me, I was.
- 40:32Speaker 3: I was.
- 40:33Speaker 2: It was an emotional scene and I think it works
- 40:35Speaker 2: because of his acting skills.
- 40:36Speaker 3: So uh.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Speaking of acting, Giamatti plays his manager Joe Gould, always excellent, skinny, clean, shaven,
- 40:43Speaker 2: the baby faced Giamatti. It was a lot of fun
- 40:45Speaker 2: to watch. Got nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor,
- 40:49Speaker 2: lost to George Clooney and Siriana. But I'm not sure
- 40:53Speaker 2: if what how fair that is. That was the year
- 40:55Speaker 2: when Crash won Best Picture, so that year was just
- 40:58Speaker 2: a mess.
- 41:00Speaker 3: They won't win Overcrash, So yeah, that was gonna work,
- 41:02Speaker 3: but still a good film, roll though likes still a
- 41:04Speaker 3: good film. A big part of it when it comes
- 41:07Speaker 3: to boxing films is being able to capture the era
- 41:12Speaker 3: without the air being overpowering. Right, So we knew it
- 41:15Speaker 3: was in the nineteen twenties nineteen thirties timeframe, but we
- 41:19Speaker 3: weren't reminded every scene of that why they set the
- 41:22Speaker 3: scene and they kind of let it go. They didn't
- 41:24Speaker 3: have to remind us every scene, which was which was
- 41:26Speaker 3: really cool.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Sure, sure, none that you bring up the era, though,
- 41:31Speaker 2: I was thinking, and you know, this movie aside, since
- 41:34Speaker 2: we're in this era twenty twenty five years earlier, we
- 41:37Speaker 2: could have made an excellent Jack Johnson movie. You know,
- 41:39Speaker 2: if you listen to episode seven of our podcast, we
- 41:41Speaker 2: talked about the legend of Jack Johnson. Didn't we just
- 41:44Speaker 2: make boxing history but American history, and I think that
- 41:47Speaker 2: there's more stories about different boxers should be should be made.
- 41:52Speaker 2: And Jack Johnson has a hell of a story. Why
- 41:54Speaker 2: don't we have a Jack Johnson boxing period piece, prestige,
- 41:57Speaker 2: oscar bait, you know, drama? What are we missing?
- 42:03Speaker 3: Well, he's black, okay y. When it comes to boxing movies,
- 42:09Speaker 3: it feels like the ones that do well, you know,
- 42:13Speaker 3: focus on the white boxers. I mean, put it this way.
- 42:17Speaker 3: Rocky has been a series for since the late seventies
- 42:21Speaker 3: and it's still going on to this day in some way,
- 42:23Speaker 3: shape or form. And they put up a statue of
- 42:26Speaker 3: him in Philly before Joe Fraser. Let you know about
- 42:33Speaker 3: what to demand and what is not. Also, here's the thing,
- 42:37Speaker 3: this is very financial based. So putting up fifty million,
- 42:40Speaker 3: one hundred million four a project, I don't know if
- 42:43Speaker 3: you can get the people who signed those checks to
- 42:46Speaker 3: do that for Jack Johnson. Hell, I don't know if
- 42:47Speaker 3: you get somebody do that for Tyson, you know. So
- 42:50Speaker 3: this is one of those things where it all comes
- 42:53Speaker 3: back to money. It all comes back to who's putting
- 42:55Speaker 3: up the money and how's that going to go? Now?
- 42:58Speaker 3: Jack Johnson's story is very interesting I don't know. I ver
- 43:02Speaker 3: get eighty eight million behind it. I just don't see it.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Sure, And just the point, just to jump off the
- 43:08Speaker 2: point you made first off, Philly, I love you. You're
- 43:10Speaker 2: an amazing city, but that rocky statue is dumb. Please
- 43:13Speaker 2: take it down and put one up with Joe Frascher now.
- 43:15Speaker 3: But it took a long time, Like.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Sure, well, I get what you're saying. Yeah, you know
- 43:23Speaker 2: you're not gonna get eighty eight million for a Jack
- 43:24Speaker 2: Johnson story. But I don't know. I think, first of all,
- 43:27Speaker 2: that's a lot of money for even a movie, especially
- 43:29Speaker 2: back then it was oscar bait, so those that was
- 43:32Speaker 2: a time when studios were a little bit more willing
- 43:34Speaker 2: to prop up movies that were could be award winners.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Maybe they'll make a huge profit, but I don't know.
- 43:40Speaker 2: With less of a with a smaller budget and a
- 43:43Speaker 2: film about Jack Johnson's story, there's a lot of drama there.
- 43:46Speaker 2: But also, yeah, you're right, there's a lot of racial
- 43:50Speaker 2: and racism drama in it that a lot of people
- 43:53Speaker 2: don't just don't want to hear. You know, this is
- 43:55Speaker 2: a feel good story. The Great Depression. People were starving,
- 43:58Speaker 2: and you know, he worked his way up, pulled himself
- 44:00Speaker 2: up by his bootstraps, so to speak. That sells. But
- 44:05Speaker 2: do movies about black and black black and brown boxers
- 44:09Speaker 2: not sell because there's not an audience or is there
- 44:11Speaker 2: not an audience because they're not being made. You know,
- 44:13Speaker 2: studios take more monks on those.
- 44:16Speaker 3: There's not an audience. Unfortunately, there's not an audience because
- 44:19Speaker 3: what happens is this, if there was people who wanted
- 44:24Speaker 3: to say a movie, they would figure it out. There's
- 44:26Speaker 3: not audience, and they know what sells. Right, A white
- 44:29Speaker 3: boxer overcoming the odds is going to do very well
- 44:32Speaker 3: because you're gonna get different people goes to the movie.
- 44:36Speaker 3: A black boxer doing that, you're probably gonna get black
- 44:39Speaker 3: people in a handful of boxing fans.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess, I guess that's true. I just kind
- 44:43Speaker 2: of maybe part of the thing that we do here
- 44:46Speaker 2: is encourage people to seek out more stories for you know,
- 44:49Speaker 2: black and brown fighters. They're just even black and brown characters.
- 44:53Speaker 2: You know, filmmakers, screenwriters, et cetera. You know, it's if
- 44:57Speaker 2: it doesn't make as much money, then you could make
- 45:00Speaker 2: something good on a small budget. Speaking of Jim Braddick,
- 45:03Speaker 2: you know, Something that that I think is very interesting
- 45:05Speaker 2: about his history is actually his decision to fight Joe
- 45:09Speaker 2: Lewis after he won the heavyweight title from Max Bear.
- 45:13Speaker 2: So at the time, the next contender was a German
- 45:18Speaker 2: guy named Max Schmelling. He was propped up by Nazi
- 45:21Speaker 2: Germany as like the perfect example of white supremacy. But
- 45:25Speaker 2: Braddock's team didn't really like the idea of a representative
- 45:28Speaker 2: for the Nazis getting a shot at the title. So
- 45:30Speaker 2: at the same time, Joe Lewis, who's a black man
- 45:32Speaker 2: from Alabama, he knew that if Schmelling won the title
- 45:36Speaker 2: from Jim Braddock, there's no way in hell the Nazis
- 45:39Speaker 2: would allow black man to fight for right. So Bradick
- 45:43Speaker 2: and Joe Lewis agreed to this, agreed to a fight.
- 45:46Speaker 2: They had to defy the New York Athletic Commission because
- 45:48Speaker 2: New York said, we're not even sanctioning in this fight.
- 45:50Speaker 2: If you don't fight Max Schmelling, we're not going to
- 45:53Speaker 2: make this fight legit. So they went to Chicago. They
- 45:55Speaker 2: still had to fight the Illinois Athletic Commission. So and
- 45:58Speaker 2: the fact that Joe Lewis then won the heavyweight title
- 46:02Speaker 2: from Braddock made him, you know, made him a name,
- 46:07Speaker 2: made him famous. He then became the guy that was
- 46:10Speaker 2: propped up by the United States to beat Schmelling, to
- 46:13Speaker 2: defeat the Nazis. Joe Louis met FDR. You know, he
- 46:16Speaker 2: had a lot writing on him. So I think that's
- 46:18Speaker 2: a really interesting story that could also use a movie.
- 46:21Speaker 2: You know, a lot of drama there that could be
- 46:22Speaker 2: a milk from But cud of, I don't know what
- 46:24Speaker 2: would you be interested in the Joe Louis movie.
- 46:26Speaker 3: I mean, there should be several of them because of
- 46:28Speaker 3: all the things that have gone on around his situation
- 46:31Speaker 3: and around that timeframe and just in general. However, again,
- 46:36Speaker 3: it's not necessarily us like we're gonna watch regardless. Whenever
- 46:39Speaker 3: you have these big films, you gotta appeal to the masses.
- 46:42Speaker 3: You need every demographic, not necessarily going to your movie,
- 46:46Speaker 3: but talking about your movie, like, oh, you know, I've
- 46:48Speaker 3: been about seeing that movie, And it's just hard to
- 46:51Speaker 3: do that when we don't have some sort of storyline
- 46:54Speaker 3: with the movie outside of someone's autobiography. Yeah, I mean
- 46:57Speaker 3: that's the thing that's tough. Man. Remember now that the
- 47:00Speaker 3: studios are only making money, that are only making films
- 47:04Speaker 3: that sell. They're not just taking a law. They're not
- 47:06Speaker 3: going into a film taking a loss on it. It
- 47:09Speaker 3: might take a loss, but they're not going into that
- 47:10Speaker 3: saying all right, we're gonna put twenty into it. If
- 47:13Speaker 3: we get it back in two years, so be it. Nah,
- 47:16Speaker 3: that's out that there's no way. So unfortunately it's just
- 47:19Speaker 3: the funds. I don't see who signs off on the
- 47:23Speaker 3: funds part of this situation.
- 47:26Speaker 2: That is unfortunate and something that is very true nowadays
- 47:29Speaker 2: with movies that maybe they don't make all their money
- 47:31Speaker 2: back in theatric or run, but they used to make
- 47:32Speaker 2: that money back in DVD sales, you know, flurry sales.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Definitely make their money back. A lot of its international money,
- 47:38Speaker 3: right Also that well, they make a lot of money
- 47:40Speaker 3: in international, So a lot of the movies end up
- 47:42Speaker 3: being okay. But they have a certain expectation of how
- 47:45Speaker 3: much money they're gonna make, so they don't meet that marker.
- 47:49Speaker 3: Business does not go on as it's supposed to be.
- 47:52Speaker 3: That's the thing I think people should take, you know,
- 47:54Speaker 3: take a look at not necessarily how much it makes,
- 47:57Speaker 3: how much it didn't make. It is ever internal marker
- 48:02Speaker 3: they set for themselves and keep the ball rolling. That's
- 48:05Speaker 3: the thing. And that's where when it doesn't need to
- 48:07Speaker 3: projecting him ount, that's when it gets tricky.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Sure, But then does that mean what are we never
- 48:12Speaker 2: going to get a movie about a black fighter ever again?
- 48:15Speaker 2: Because the George for.
- 48:17Speaker 3: Which you know exactly. So here's the thing. If you
- 48:22Speaker 3: put money in pub behind that and that doesn't work,
- 48:26Speaker 3: then go look for everybody else. You can't really do
- 48:29Speaker 3: a movie about Floyd. That doesn't work. It just doesn't
- 48:33Speaker 3: like we've supposed. Also, we've seen Floyd, like, we've seen
- 48:36Speaker 3: the behind the scenes, we've seen social media, so that
- 48:39Speaker 3: that doesn't work. I just don't see another person. Now
- 48:42Speaker 3: here's the thing. I think Oscar de Laoia, if done well,
- 48:45Speaker 3: would be a very good movie.
- 48:47Speaker 2: I don't know how.
- 48:48Speaker 3: I'm not the director to do it, that's not my job,
- 48:51Speaker 3: but I think that would have an opportunity to be
- 48:53Speaker 3: a very good one because he has a lot of
- 48:55Speaker 3: fighting stuff, you have a lot of business stuff, you
- 48:58Speaker 3: have a lot of personal stuff, and at the point
- 49:00Speaker 3: in time, he was the face of boxing once upon time.
- 49:04Speaker 3: So I think that, yeah, that's someone if I were
- 49:07Speaker 3: to invest money into a boxing film, it would be
- 49:11Speaker 3: his because I think you would have enough there to
- 49:14Speaker 3: captivate all demographics to seeing what's going on.
- 49:18Speaker 2: It might be a good movie for Robert Rodriguez actually
- 49:20Speaker 2: because he's he's a Mexican American. He's from Texas, so
- 49:23Speaker 2: you know, then Oscar deloya Is fame was always with
- 49:26Speaker 2: like we're Mexican born or sorry, American born Mexicans, like
- 49:30Speaker 2: more American Mexicans. Yeah, yeah, but I don't know, I mean,
- 49:34Speaker 2: I think I agree that would make great story. I
- 49:37Speaker 2: think in general, you know, these kinds of period pieces,
- 49:40Speaker 2: it worked better the farther removed we are so from.
- 49:44Speaker 2: For a fighter that has to either be really old
- 49:46Speaker 2: or really dead, I think a period sorry about Jack
- 49:50Speaker 2: Johnson and jo Lewis would be more likely to hit
- 49:53Speaker 2: the Defloyd movie or Deloya movie. I think personally, just
- 49:56Speaker 2: because there's that much time removed, you know, there's you're
- 49:58Speaker 2: able to do a little bit more research on the history.
- 50:00Speaker 2: And but you know, yeah, like you said, these days
- 50:04Speaker 2: you're seeing a movie about a guy that we watched
- 50:06Speaker 2: on TV when we were kids. Like, I don't know,
- 50:08Speaker 2: I personally find that a little bit that's interesting. I
- 50:11Speaker 2: sure you don't want to. You know, when you go
- 50:12Speaker 2: to the movies to learn things, that's what documentaries are for.
- 50:15Speaker 2: But it is cool to come out with a little
- 50:16Speaker 2: bit of knowledge didn't have before.
- 50:18Speaker 3: So that's why I think Dala Hoy would probably be
- 50:20Speaker 3: the best one, because there's so much there, and it
- 50:24Speaker 3: was before social media. It was a lot of us
- 50:26Speaker 3: really before the peak of the internet, really like for
- 50:28Speaker 3: two thousands, hey me, his career up to that point
- 50:31Speaker 3: was very fascinating, but from two thousand and now it's
- 50:34Speaker 3: been a whole different career. So I think there's a
- 50:36Speaker 3: lot of meat on the bone there. I think a
- 50:38Speaker 3: lot that it could be done, and it would be
- 50:39Speaker 3: interesting to see if, if who can captivate that. But
- 50:43Speaker 3: also he'd have to be open to sharing his life
- 50:46Speaker 3: with someone to do the movie. I don't know that's
- 50:48Speaker 3: something he's willing to do.
- 50:49Speaker 2: I don't know, Maybe not now, maybe when he's ninety.
- 50:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it could, but that would be unfortunate because most
- 50:56Speaker 3: of us, you know, we wouldn't be one of movies
- 50:58Speaker 3: at that point. We probably be uh streaming it or
- 51:01Speaker 3: you know, our phones by then. But it's just one
- 51:04Speaker 3: of those things. I don't I think there's a time
- 51:08Speaker 3: for it. I don't know when that time is, but
- 51:10Speaker 3: there's definitely a time for it. He means a lot
- 51:13Speaker 3: of boxing because you can argue about how good or
- 51:17Speaker 3: battle promoter he was or is or whatever. There's pros
- 51:20Speaker 3: and cons to how he does business, but you can't
- 51:24Speaker 3: not mention him from fighting to promoting and the overall
- 51:28Speaker 3: business of boxing. He's one of the most important people
- 51:31Speaker 3: in the sport, that's that the sports ever had. So
- 51:35Speaker 3: it would be very interesting to see if a movie
- 51:37Speaker 3: could be done about him. It would be calculating if possible.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Tery Bill. And here's another angle on this is that, yeah,
- 51:44Speaker 2: it'd be cool to learn about the insight story of
- 51:46Speaker 2: someone like De la Hoya, who a lot of the
- 51:48Speaker 2: people who are even casual boxing fans have heard that name.
- 51:52Speaker 2: But who the hell knew about jib Reddick before cindroll
- 51:54Speaker 2: Man like he was? Was he a popular figure? I'd
- 51:56Speaker 2: never heard of him. It's like these movies are would
- 51:58Speaker 2: bring people out.
- 51:59Speaker 4: So with him, with Braddick, the people so supposing a
- 52:05Speaker 4: lot of people want a lot of money that day
- 52:07Speaker 4: when he when he had upset, a lot of people
- 52:09Speaker 4: want a lot of money.
- 52:11Speaker 3: And back then you knew who control the money and
- 52:12Speaker 3: how that goes. So those stories always tend to come
- 52:17Speaker 3: down generation duration. Oh yeah, your uncle or your father
- 52:20Speaker 3: or your grandfather, your great great grandfather won this amount,
- 52:23Speaker 3: this amount, this amount. It's like an old wi like
- 52:25Speaker 3: an old wives tell you know. Okay, you know, so
- 52:28Speaker 3: you combine that with the overall story and everything, and
- 52:31Speaker 3: now you got a two and a half hour film.
- 52:33Speaker 3: And then you mentioned Joe Lewis and you mentioned some
- 52:36Speaker 3: other things. You mentioned the depression, So you mentioned all
- 52:39Speaker 3: those things like, ah, got it, I see where I
- 52:42Speaker 3: see where it comes in at. But you are correct,
- 52:44Speaker 3: The average, viable, average boxing fan would have no idea
- 52:46Speaker 3: what you're talking about.
- 52:47Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's funny. I'm glad that you mentioned
- 52:49Speaker 2: that specifically about the you know, the stories passed down
- 52:51Speaker 2: through generations, because I just it just clicked the Remember
- 52:54Speaker 2: I read that Ron Howard, he's he's a NEPO baby.
- 52:56Speaker 2: His dad, Rance Howard was in Hollywood for years and
- 53:00Speaker 2: and Howard said that his dad remembered listening to the
- 53:04Speaker 2: Braddick Versus Verified on the radio, so he always talked
- 53:06Speaker 2: about it growing up. So that's kind of a personal
- 53:09Speaker 2: story for Rad in a way. So that actually makes
- 53:12Speaker 2: perfect sense. It's a really good perspective on that.
- 53:13Speaker 3: You know, think about how we think about Tyson, right,
- 53:18Speaker 3: Think about we're in our late thirties, think about what
- 53:22Speaker 3: we saw. Think about what our parents and relatives saw,
- 53:26Speaker 3: and how that information has been passed down to our
- 53:28Speaker 3: generationw we passed information down to our you know, younger siblings,
- 53:33Speaker 3: younger people, so they like that and we have a
- 53:36Speaker 3: lot more information than they did back then. So trying
- 53:38Speaker 3: to picture like that and then picture how we view Tyson. Hmm.
- 53:43Speaker 2: Now that's you know, another side of that coin. So
- 53:46Speaker 2: you know, we were both born after Muhammad Ali was
- 53:49Speaker 2: no longer active, right, but you know, as growing up
- 53:52Speaker 2: a boxing fan, you know, I knew of him as
- 53:54Speaker 2: the legend. You know, this is larger than life legend.
- 53:56Speaker 2: And here's the story I've never mentioned to you. When
- 53:59Speaker 2: I was in college, I went to go see David Copperfield,
- 54:02Speaker 2: the Magician, perform in Phoenix. Right close to the end
- 54:05Speaker 2: of the the end of the show, he's like, thank
- 54:08Speaker 2: you everybody for coming. I just want to give a
- 54:10Speaker 2: you know, special shout out to my great friend. When
- 54:12Speaker 2: the best friends of the world, the champ mister Muhammad Ali.
- 54:14Speaker 2: And then Muhammad Ali himself stands up and I was like,
- 54:18Speaker 2: is this gonna be like a bit like, is this
- 54:20Speaker 2: part of his act is going to be a guy?
- 54:22Speaker 2: Like that's gonna he's gonna turn into doves or turtles
- 54:24Speaker 2: or something. And it was actually hit me. Turned around.
- 54:26Speaker 2: I was like maybe like five or six rows away
- 54:29Speaker 2: from Muhammad Ali again, never saw him fight myself, but
- 54:32Speaker 2: still just being in the room, it was like a wild,
- 54:35Speaker 2: like electric feeling, and everybody couldn't believe it. They were
- 54:38Speaker 2: just like, wait, what did he say? Who?
- 54:40Speaker 3: Holy shit? Right?
- 54:41Speaker 2: So yeah, I know I felt that like being in
- 54:44Speaker 2: the room with the legend himself, you know, I it
- 54:47Speaker 2: was amazing. This is you know, when he was older.
- 54:49Speaker 2: I didn't know at the time as well that he
- 54:50Speaker 2: had that he retired in Phoenix, he had a home
- 54:52Speaker 2: out there, so I was totally blindsided. Yeah, so so
- 54:55Speaker 2: I get that, you know, I I guess I just
- 54:58Speaker 2: keep going back to you know, there's so many stories
- 55:00Speaker 2: to tell, so many our more amazing films that could
- 55:03Speaker 2: be made with you know, great writers, great directors. You
- 55:06Speaker 2: know Barry Jenkins, Jack Johnson movie. You know that that
- 55:09Speaker 2: would fucking crush it that maybe wouldn't make a lot
- 55:12Speaker 2: of money, but it would probably win all the awards
- 55:14Speaker 2: in the world.
- 55:14Speaker 3: And that's the thing right now. If a movie is
- 55:17Speaker 3: not gonna make money, yeah, no chance, like you have
- 55:20Speaker 3: no you need you need to have like a popular
- 55:23Speaker 3: athlete to get behind it from the get go for
- 55:26Speaker 3: to have any action. And even then it's gonna be problems.
- 55:28Speaker 3: Like it's just so much politics and so much finances,
- 55:33Speaker 3: financial stuff that it's really difficult.
- 55:35Speaker 2: Well, I guess even to be fair, and you know,
- 55:38Speaker 2: my thoughts are my opinions and thoughts are evolving during
- 55:40Speaker 2: this conversation that's happening in real time. But I guess
- 55:43Speaker 2: the movies like Cinderella Man wouldn't even be made as
- 55:46Speaker 2: much today, you know, that big of a budget for
- 55:48Speaker 2: a movie that's not like a superhero movie, you know,
- 55:51Speaker 2: or a CGI action fest that kind of thing. It
- 55:54Speaker 2: at best, if if a studio trying to make Cinderella
- 55:57Speaker 2: Man today, it might be like a Net Netflix original
- 56:00Speaker 2: series or.
- 56:01Speaker 3: Something correct would hit the spring these days, exactly.
- 56:04Speaker 2: Yeah, they're right, there's so many movies that aren't being made,
- 56:06Speaker 2: you know, the old legal thrillers, you know, mid budget
- 56:10Speaker 2: legal thrillers.
- 56:11Speaker 3: Shout out for a three season situation exactly, a three
- 56:15Speaker 3: season show or four season show on Netflix or Amazon
- 56:18Speaker 3: or something like that.
- 56:19Speaker 2: That wouldn't get promoted and nobody would hear about it.
- 56:21Speaker 2: We would hear about it in his mouth.
- 56:23Speaker 3: Hey you see this? Yeah, yeah, something like that. Yeah.
- 56:27Speaker 2: No, that's why I mean, yeah, we're we're kind of
- 56:29Speaker 2: we're losing out on potential stories because of the way
- 56:31Speaker 2: that hollywoods running these days. And I just said, you know,
- 56:33Speaker 2: I don't want to be like the old washed son
- 56:36Speaker 2: of a bitches like back in my day, but you know,
- 56:38Speaker 2: we need a little bit more throwbacks, you know, throwbacks,
- 56:42Speaker 2: more movies like Cinderella Man again, good movie. I just
- 56:46Speaker 2: can't help but think about what are the stories we're
- 56:48Speaker 2: missing out there, And you know, the stories of like
- 56:51Speaker 2: Joe Lewis meeting FDR and being the hope of the
- 56:54Speaker 2: nation to fight the Nazis, that's a lot more interesting
- 56:56Speaker 2: to me. No disrespect to to Ron Howard, uh but anyway, Yeah, here,
- 57:01Speaker 2: we rate movies out of four gloves, So how would
- 57:05Speaker 2: you rate Cinderella Man.
- 57:06Speaker 3: Or a boxing movie? Is three point seven five? Because
- 57:09Speaker 3: that was really good, the acting, the extel, the budget
- 57:13Speaker 3: played out the way it was supposed to everything was,
- 57:16Speaker 3: Everything went how it was supposed to go, So I
- 57:18Speaker 3: would say three point seven five.
- 57:20Speaker 2: It's a three point five. The final boxing match is amazing.
- 57:24Speaker 2: It really well choreographed for the well shot, really exciting, thrilling.
- 57:29Speaker 2: Sometimes these movies kind of rush through the matches themselves,
- 57:32Speaker 2: which I get. You know, it can get boring if
- 57:34Speaker 2: you're I always struggled the reason I don't watch a
- 57:37Speaker 2: lot of boxing movies because I watched real boxing, so
- 57:39Speaker 2: it just doesn't really Yeah, it makes it a little
- 57:42Speaker 2: less exciting. So you got to really really do an
- 57:45Speaker 2: excellent job at filming choreographing a match to make it
- 57:49Speaker 2: interesting for me. And I think this movie did it.
- 57:51Speaker 2: You know that the very first actual match we see
- 57:55Speaker 2: in Creed, directed by Ryan Coogler, all one shot, phenomenal.
- 57:59Speaker 2: I love what that. I watched just that that scene
- 58:03Speaker 2: alone anytime, and I'm thrilled, and I think this movie
- 58:05Speaker 2: stood the test. I think that's I think that's part
- 58:08Speaker 2: of what also makes a good boxing movie is if
- 58:10Speaker 2: you're a boxing fan, can you still watch the fight
- 58:14Speaker 2: and be hooked, intrigued and you know, not bored. Because
- 58:18Speaker 2: it's obviously not not the same. I think this movie
- 58:22Speaker 2: pulled that off. So yeah, you know, check out Cinderella Man,
- 58:25Speaker 2: and you know, let us know what you think in
- 58:27Speaker 2: the comments, send us an email. Give you the email
- 58:29Speaker 2: address at the end of the show. But before we bail,
- 58:33Speaker 2: we've got a mail back question from a listener. Are
- 58:35Speaker 2: you ready for this one?
- 58:36Speaker 3: Sure? Yeah?
- 58:37Speaker 2: This one is from a listener named Michelle B. And
- 58:40Speaker 2: her question is what is the most outrageous excuse you've
- 58:44Speaker 2: heard for a loss? In the ring.
- 58:48Speaker 3: Man? I said, the most outrageous one. I don't like that.
- 58:51Speaker 3: I hear often is the hometown one. Someone found their hometown.
- 58:54Speaker 3: It wasn't focused, it wasn't right mentally and got dropped,
- 58:57Speaker 3: or I'd be the last one. I just a light.
- 59:00Speaker 3: I'm not a fan of it. It happens too often.
- 59:05Speaker 3: You know, it hasn't happened as much anymore, but you
- 59:07Speaker 3: step it a lot. I remember that Judah fighting in
- 59:11Speaker 3: the garden and him getting knocked up. I believe that's
- 59:14Speaker 3: where the crazy walk or dance happened. I'm not mistaken.
- 59:19Speaker 3: You know he got to hit so bad that you
- 59:21Speaker 3: know he was basically crip walking in the ring. You know,
- 59:25Speaker 3: I remember Corey Spinks fighting in Saint Louis after he
- 59:27Speaker 3: wont to belt. I remember him, you know, getting dry eye,
- 59:30Speaker 3: but remember him losing as well. So yeah, I mean
- 59:33Speaker 3: there's there are several little instances, but that's the one
- 59:36Speaker 3: to me. That is like the oh I was fighting
- 59:38Speaker 3: at home, wasn't focus blah blah blah. Like nah, man,
- 59:41Speaker 3: if anything, you're at home, you want to focus more
- 59:43Speaker 3: because you want to put in a show in front
- 59:45Speaker 3: of your people.
- 59:46Speaker 2: Yeah, the people from high school are going to be there.
- 59:49Speaker 2: You don't want to embarrass yourself in front of everybody from.
- 59:52Speaker 3: High school, friends, enemies, the women. If that's what you
- 59:56Speaker 3: do everything. You know, some guys there. I don't know,
- 59:59Speaker 3: but I know I was boxing and I wanted to
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: push one of my hometown and I knew all the
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: woman was out there, I'd be trying to close the show.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: I'd be trying everyone out. So yeah, one hundred percent.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: All the all the girls in high school that I
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: was gonna say, thought I was a nerd. No, I
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: was a fucking nerd. Back then. Girls didn't look at
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: me once, much less twice. If I went back to Houston,
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: the box all hell though, I'd be like tip top
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: shaved trading twenty four hours a day, right for six months? Yeah, no,
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: I get that. So that's a good one. I have
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: a very specific one person, one event one excuse uh
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Deontay Wilder in his rematch with Tyson Fury. Do you
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: remember that one?
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: Unfortunately I do.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: So Deonta came out in like this actually really awesome
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: looking costume for his ringwalk. It looked amazing. It was
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: like like.
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: A Black Knight costume and all that shit. Yeah, it
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: was like.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Half half Master Shredder, half a Saluron, half Gundom. That's
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: like three halves. But it looked great. But then he
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: said after he lost that rematch, he said, oh, you
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: know that the costume was too heavy. It was like
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: forty pounds. My legs gave out. I was too tired.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: I couldn't, you know, pull it out during the match.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: But like, if that's the case, don't wear that shit, man, right,
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: what do you do?
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: So?
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: The thing about boxing is that it's not very visually dynamic,
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: you know, especially when you're just wearing gloves, shorts and shoes.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: So I personally appreciate when you know, a fighter breaks
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: out like a cool outfit, or you know when they
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: have like tassels on their shorts. I think something like that.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: It's cool some brightly colored shoes or designs on them.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: I love that stuff. But you can just have like
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: a I don't know, make your row, a design on
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: your robe or something, or something that's some kind of hat.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Don't wear a goddamn forty pound suit of armor if
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: it's going to be that big a deal. I'm sorry.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: No, I'm with you. I'm with you. But also, here's
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: the thing too that you got to make sense of
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: is why you control that. No one told you to
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: do that. That's on you. Why even you got paid
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: a bunch of money to do it, that's still on you.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: You're not getting paid more than what you get paid
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: to fight. That's a new decision. That's not something that
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: you're forced to do. That's the thing that you did.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: So I have no no sympathy at all.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I got you. I mean, hey, you know what,
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: he looked great his his outfits. He Deonta is usually
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: known for wearing outlandish costumes. Just google like Deontay Wilder
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: costume and you see a few of them. They look awesome,
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: But hey, man. Yeah, nobody asked you to wear that shit, right,
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: So all right, that'll do it. For episode ten, Jamison,
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: where can people find you on social media?
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: What is the best spot at the Jamison? I'm on
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: there usually whenever there's a big fight on or fight
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: on general music, tuning in, making a couple of comments
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: here or there. Just want to keep it, you know,
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: just keep it, you know, flowing. You know, you never
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: know who you run into. Like I said, one day,
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: I was Sweeten and Al Bernstein you know, tweeted back.
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: And for those that don't know, he's the one back
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: on ESPN at boxing. He was the guy based on
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: the face of ESPN Boxing, so it was good to
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: you know, ironically interviewed him a few times and whenever
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: it's final or wherever box is the topic, he'll chime in.
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: So it's always good. Good for that, you know, interaction.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: That's great.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: Now, shout out to Al bernsteing the shout out to
