- 0:01Luke chapter 5 Let us pray our Father is in heaven, hallowed be
- 0:10thy name, Thy Kingdom come, and thy will be done on earth, just
- 0:15as it is in heaven. Give us today Our Daily Bread,
- 0:18and forgive us for our sins as we forgive those who sin against
- 0:22us. Lead us not to temptation God,
- 0:24but deliver us from the evil one for yours is the Kingdom and the
- 0:30power and the glory forever. Amen.
- 0:34Let's start in verse one. And it came to pass that as the
- 0:41people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the
- 0:45lake of Geneser. So here we're going to see this
- 0:50miraculous catch of the fish to and saw two ships standing by
- 0:57the lake, but the fishermen were gone out of them and were
- 1:01washing their Nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships,
- 1:06which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a
- 1:10little from the land, and he sat down and he taught the people
- 1:14out of the ship. So we know that Jesus loves to
- 1:17use these ships as a backdrop. Four.
- 1:21And when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out
- 1:26into the deep, and let down your Nets for a catch. 5 And Simon
- 1:32answered him, said, Master, we have toiled all the night and
- 1:36have taken nothing. Nevertheless, at your word I
- 1:40will let down the net. That is where we need to be with
- 1:43the Lord. We need to trust Him even
- 1:45whenever it defies and goes against our own logic. 6 And
- 1:49when they had done this, they enclosed a great multitude of
- 1:53fish, and their net broke. There were so many they couldn't
- 1:58take them in seven. And they beckoned unto their
- 2:01partners, which were in the other ship, that they would come
- 2:04and help him. And they came and filled both
- 2:08the ships, so that they began to sink.
- 2:10There were so many fish, it was so heavy that the ships started
- 2:15to sink. 8 And when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus
- 2:20knees saying, depart from me, for I am a sinful man oh Lord.
- 2:26So here's another appropriate response, friends, that when the
- 2:30when Jesus comes in, when the Lord comes in, our only response
- 2:35is to fall down and to worship him and to know that we are in
- 2:41desperate need of a touch and desperate need of a cleansing
- 2:45and desperate need to be covered with his righteous blood.
- 2:49And that is the only way that we can stand.
- 2:52That is the only way that we can gird up our loins is by being
- 2:56covered in the righteous, pure blood of Jesus Christ in here.
- 3:01Simon Peter understood that he was sinful, 9 for he was
- 3:08astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of the
- 3:13fish which they had taken. 10 And so was also James and John,
- 3:18the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon.
- 3:23And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not, from now on you shall catch
- 3:27men. So he calls them fishers of men.
- 3:3211 And when they had brought their ships to land, they
- 3:35forsook all and followed him. There is another appropriate
- 3:38response, friends, when Jesus calls you into ministry, you
- 3:43should be able to drop everything and to leave and to
- 3:47go and to not hold anything tight fisted.
- 3:51But everything that has been given to you, friends, you
- 3:54should be able to let go of. And Job said it well, that we
- 3:57came into this world naked, and we will leave naked.
- 4:01We came into this world with nothing, and we will leave with
- 4:04nothing. And all of our righteousness is
- 4:07nothing but filthy rags, friends.
- 4:09And we desperately need to be connected to the power source
- 4:13and to be connected to God Almighty and to be connected to
- 4:17Jesus and the righteousness of Jesus and the holiness of Jesus
- 4:22is available to you, friends. But we need to let go of
- 4:26everything that is holding us back, friends, everything that
- 4:31we're holding on to, friends, we need to be able to live open
- 4:35handedly. And they forsook everything.
- 4:37And they followed him. 12 And it came to pass when he was in a
- 4:41certain city, behold, a man full of leprosy, who seen Jesus fell
- 4:46on his face and begged him, saying, Lord, if you will, so
- 4:50you can make me clean. So here he knows that he has the
- 4:54ability to, but he did not know if he was willing.
- 4:58And so many times we pray, friends, and the healing doesn't
- 5:01come, but we should never doubt that God can, and that God wants
- 5:06to, and we should keep pressing for the healing even when it
- 5:10doesn't come. And he put forth his hand and
- 5:15touched him, saying, I will be clean.
- 5:19And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
- 5:23So you can see that Jesus has power over the sickness and
- 5:26disease. And Jesus was not offended and
- 5:30Jesus was not scared. And Jesus was not filled with
- 5:33fear. And Jesus actually reached out
- 5:35and touched this leper. He was not afraid of being
- 5:41defiled here. He was not offended that this
- 5:45leper would come so close to him. 14 And he charged him to
- 5:51tell no man, but go and show yourself to the priest, and
- 5:54offer for your cleansing, according as Moses commanded for
- 5:58a testimony unto them. So you can imagine that this
- 6:02leper went in to the synagogue and showed all of the religious
- 6:09leaders that he had been cleansed of leprosy.
- 6:13And what amazement when they traced it back to Jesus Christ,
- 6:18the carpenter's son, the son of Joseph.
- 6:24What an amazing testimony unto them, the power that Jesus
- 6:29possessed and possesses for you and for me, and for today and
- 6:33for such a time as this. And it is the same healing power
- 6:37that is available to us friends. 15 But so much the more went
- 6:45there, a fame abroad of him, and great multitudes came together
- 6:48to hear and to be healed by him of their infirmity. 16 And he
- 6:54withdrew himself into the wilderness and prayed.
- 6:58Jesus often withdrew to desolate places, and the disciples
- 7:04understood that all the power that he possessed was directly
- 7:07connected to his prayer life. And look at how Jesus forsook
- 7:11the crowds to get a loan. And we would do well, friends,
- 7:15to go and be recharged, to go and make sure our cups are full
- 7:22and overflowing and not empty and it is impossible to pour out
- 7:26of an empty cup. And Jesus understood the need to
- 7:29get a loan with the Father. 17 And it came to pass on a certain
- 7:34day as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors
- 7:38of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of
- 7:42Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was
- 7:46present to heal them. So you can see that this
- 7:53paralytic is about to be healed. You can see that the Pharisees
- 7:57and all the religious leaders were there, and we're going to
- 8:02see what their response is, and it's going to reveal to us their
- 8:08motives. It's going to reveal to us their
- 8:10inner thoughts. 18 And behold, men brought in a bed, a man
- 8:17which was taken with a palsy, and they sought means to bring
- 8:22him in and lay him before him. 19 And when they could find not
- 8:28a way that they might bring him in because of the multitude,
- 8:32they went on the housetop and let him down through the tiling,
- 8:38with his couch in the midst before Jesus.
- 8:41So they broke open the roof, and they let their friend down into
- 8:48the house. 20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto them,
- 8:54Man, your sins are forgiven you as he said that to you, Friends,
- 8:59have you reached out, and have you grabbed a hold of the hem of
- 9:02his garment? Have you received your healing?
- 9:06And look at how he forgives him of his sins, which is the
- 9:09greatest miracle that we could ever receive. 21 In the scribes
- 9:15and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this
- 9:19which speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God
- 9:23alone? They did not realize who they
- 9:25were messing with. They did not realize who they
- 9:28were looking at. They reasoned within their own
- 9:32hearts and minds that he spoke blasphemies and Jesus is God. 22
- 9:41But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered and said
- 9:44unto them, What reason you in your hearts?
- 9:4823 Which is easier, to say your sins are forgiven you, or to
- 9:52say, rise up and walk? So he realized that this man's
- 9:57infirmities were nothing in comparison of his need for a
- 10:02clear conscience, for his need for his restoration to the heart
- 10:07of the Father. He saw that his sins desperately
- 10:11needed to be forgiven. And that is for every single
- 10:14human being who has ever been born, is living, or will ever be
- 10:19born. We all, every single one of us
- 10:24need our sins to be forgiven. And there is only one way and
- 10:29His name is Jesus. Jesus said, I am the way, the
- 10:34truth, and the life, and that no one comes unto the Father except
- 10:38through me. And that is Jesus telling us
- 10:42that He is the only way. He is not one of many ways.
- 10:45He is the way, and He is the forgiveness of our sins and the
- 10:50remission of our sins. He is the way that we can have
- 10:53peace with God, and He is the only way that we can have peace
- 10:57with God. 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has
- 11:04power upon earth to forgive sins, he said unto the sick of
- 11:09the palsy, I say unto you, Arise and take up your couch, and go
- 11:14into your house. 25 And immediately he rose up before
- 11:19them and took up that which he laid, and departed to his own
- 11:23house, glorifying God. And that's what we need
- 11:26desperately glorified God in the highest when he brings about the
- 11:30healing. 26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God.
- 11:35And we're filled with fear, saying, we have seen strange
- 11:38things today. And you will see stranger things
- 11:42when you see Jesus coming on the clouds with the multitude, and
- 11:47when you see the glory of God resting upon this earth.
- 11:53We have seen strange things today, and this is just the tip
- 11:56of the iceberg of what is about to happen.
- 11:58And we are closer today than we were yesterday. 27 And after
- 12:03these things, he went forth and saw public and named Levi,
- 12:07sitting at the receipt of custom.
- 12:09And he said unto him, Follow me. This is the calling of Matthew,
- 12:13friends 28 and he left all rose up and followed him.
- 12:17And that is our appropriate response, friends, when the Lord
- 12:20calls us into ministry, leave your everything and go and
- 12:25follow him and don't worry about anything.
- 12:29Just know that you're connected to the power source and just
- 12:32know that your food and clothing will be taken care of.
- 12:37He rose up and followed him, and what a sacrifice this man made.
- 12:4329 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house, and
- 12:48there were a great company of publicans and of others that sat
- 12:52down with them. This was a big going away party.
- 12:5530 And but their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his
- 13:00disciples, saying, Why do you eat and drink with publicans and
- 13:03sinners here? They're coming and they're
- 13:06looking upon this feast, they're looking upon this dinner, and
- 13:11they're seeing the disciples, they're seeing Jesus the Christ
- 13:16sitting with sinners and tax collectors, and he is the friend
- 13:21of sinners, friends. And he did not come for the
- 13:26well, He came for the sick friends. 31 And Jesus answered
- 13:37and said unto them, They that are whole do not need a
- 13:40physician, but they that are sick. 32 And I came not to call
- 13:46the righteous, but sinners for repentance.
- 13:50We need to understand that if a man had 100 sheep and one went
- 13:53astray, he would leave the 99 and pursue the 1.
- 13:56And I tell you, there's more rejoicing in heaven over 1
- 14:00Sinner who sees his need for repentance than for the 99 who
- 14:05do not. And those 99 are the ones,
- 14:09friends who think of themselves as righteous. 33 And they said
- 14:15unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often and make
- 14:20prayers? And likewise the disciples of
- 14:22the Pharisees? But you eat and drink.
- 14:26So here they're calling him a wine bibber, they're calling him
- 14:29a glutton. They're asking why the disciples
- 14:31are not acting like John's disciples, and what is he going
- 14:36to tell him? 34 And he said unto them, Can
- 14:38you make the children of the bride chamber fast while the
- 14:42bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when
- 14:46the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and they shall
- 14:49fast in those days. So there was a cultural
- 14:54connotation that's attached to what Jesus is saying here and
- 14:58during a wedding feast, during the time that the bridegroom was
- 15:04with his groom's men. There were some exceptions that
- 15:09were allowed and here He is showing them and they would have
- 15:14been well aware of what Jesus was trying to say.
- 15:19And Jesus here was telling them that there is coming a time in
- 15:22the day where they will fast. But during this time, this is a
- 15:26time of festive and festivities. This is a beautiful time that
- 15:34Jesus was with his disciples and teaching them, and he tells us
- 15:40that we would do well to fast. 36 And he spoke a parable unto
- 15:45them. No man puts a piece of a new
- 15:47garment upon an old. If otherwise, then both the new
- 15:51makes a RIP, and the peace that was taken out of the new agrees
- 15:55not with the old. So he's telling us he's doing a
- 15:58new thing, friends, and you cannot put this grace into the
- 16:04law. And he did not come to abolish
- 16:06the law, but to fulfill it. And he was proclaiming this
- 16:11acceptable year. He was proclaiming to them that
- 16:15we are no longer under the law. And he was telling them that
- 16:20it's time to do a new thing upon the earth. 37 And no man puts
- 16:26new wine into old bottles, else the new wine will burst the
- 16:31bottles and be spilled, and the bottles will perish. 38 But new
- 16:36wine must be put into new bottles for and both are
- 16:39preserved. So he's saying that it is
- 16:41important that we do not just abolish the law, that yes, those
- 16:47things are still good and they are still acceptable, but we are
- 16:53no longer held to that. He gives us grace, and grace and
- 16:58grace abounds, friends, but we should not take that grace and
- 17:05abuse it. And we need to be able to
- 17:08rightfully discern the full counsel of God's Word. 39 No man
- 17:14also having drunk old wine, straightway desires new, for he
- 17:19says the old is better. And he's showing us, friends,
- 17:23that it is these two working together.
- 17:28It is not that we just throw out the old.
- 17:33We need to know that God's complete authority, God's
- 17:37complete Word is all working together congruently in this
- 17:45beautiful tapestry, friends. And Jesus is the word in the
- 17:51word was the in the beginning was the word and the word was
- 17:55with God and the word was God. And we know that the word became
- 17:59flesh, friends, and we would do well to have the full counsel of
- 18:04God's word that we tap into and it all reveals Jesus, every bit
- 18:13of it. I hope you've been blessed this
- 18:16chapter. I know I sure have.
- 18:20I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 18:23I love you and so does God. We'll see you back here
- 18:29tomorrow. God bless you.
