- 0:16Kearns: So in Night Living Dead, there's a scene at the top of the stairs where
- 0:21he runs into his, like the third zombie in the movie, where it's very clearly
- 0:24the inflatable like clown thing that they, that was around when we were kids.
- 0:30And he beats it to death with a, with a poker, a fire poker from the fireplace.
- 0:36And that's by far my favorite part of the movie, like the hands down,
- 0:40my favorite part of the movie by far.
- 0:43It says by
- 0:44Jon: It's up there.
- 0:45Kearns: it's, well, that's my favorite campy part of the
- 0:48movie, so I'll put it that way.
- 0:52Jon: all right.
- 0:53Ryan : talking about, you talk about Night of Living Dead, like the
- 0:55opening is still my favorite part.
- 0:57Like they're coming to get you, Barbara.
- 0:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00Ryan : I still get chills on it.
- 1:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:02Ryan : imprint Plus just the main character, just kicking ass,
- 1:07Jon: Yep.
- 1:08Ryan : I just like in the original film, because it was so, it was very iconic
- 1:14Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:15Ryan : a black actor in a lead role at that time.
- 1:18And George A. Romero did it.
- 1:20So gracefully did it with like a lot of, like a lot of force and it worked out.
- 1:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:26Kearns: off the Whitey.
- 1:26Ryan : just great
- 1:27Kearns: There was a lot of that.
- 1:28There was a rift with a white guy.
- 1:29The whole movie too.
- 1:30If we're gonna talk about the race relations part,
- 1:33Ryan : that guy was an asshole.
- 1:34Kearns: he was, but it didn't matter.
- 1:35Ryan : deserved it.
- 1:36He deserved it.
- 1:37Kearns: I think maybe that's why they leaned on him being such an asshole
- 1:40too, so that it was like taken better.
- 1:42Ryan : Yeah.
- 1:43Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 1:44Jon: But like it was also sort of coincidental.
- 1:47He cast the best guy he found, and then it worked out to be
- 1:51this big commentary on race.
- 1:54I.
- 1:55Kearns: Isn't that something though?
- 1:56Isn't that something?
- 1:57I kind like that.
- 1:58Oh, he just cast the best dude for the role.
- 2:01Who did the best job with the acting?
- 2:03What a novel idea.
- 2:04Maybe we should do that all the time.
- 2:06It'd be great.
- 2:06We'll get like Asian Superman next.
- 2:08It'll be awesome.
- 2:10Awesome.
- 2:12Ryan : Well, you know,
- 2:12Kearns: from Walking Dead.
- 2:17Ryan : That wouldn't, now I'm thinking about it.
- 2:20I mean, anything can happen.
- 2:22Kearns: He's gotta eat a couple cows and lift a few weights,
- 2:24but he can make it work out.
- 2:26Sure.
- 2:27Ryan : You know what I'm waiting for?
- 2:28I'm waiting for the new Spawn movie
- 2:30Kearns: Ooh,
- 2:33ooh.
- 2:34They, you know what?
- 2:34I haven't seen them except for the, the HBO show.
- 2:38Spawn has let me down consistently.
- 2:41all right, so back to, well, we, you know what, we, this would be a good time to
- 2:44divert from uh, night of the Living Dead, because that's not what this episode's
- 2:49on, but it is on a movie with zombies.
- 2:53Ryan : Oh no.
- 2:54Kearns: Infected is a good, yeah, we'll go with infected.
- 2:57And that's the term they chose in 28 days later, which was the correct term.
- 3:00'cause they're not zombies, although they don't really get into like how they live.
- 3:05And they talk about that later on in the movie, how long they've
- 3:07been alive without food and water, which is super interesting.
- 3:11But we'll get to that later on.
- 3:13But yeah, we're talking about 28 days later.
- 3:15One of the better, well, not better, but one of the larger and really well
- 3:20received, uh, fast zombie style movies that came out in the early two thousands.
- 3:25Right.
- 3:25Was it early two thousands?
- 3:27Ryan : 2002.
- 3:28Kearns: A year I graduated from high school.
- 3:33Ooh.
- 3:35Ryan : Since sixth grade buddy.
- 3:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 3:37Ryan : grade.
- 3:38Kearns: Eh, you're close enough to legal.
- 3:40Let's see those yearbook pics.
- 3:42You sexy bastard.
- 3:45Ryan : I was a chunky, I was a chunky, slick haired bastard, man.
- 3:49Kearns: oh, we know you were slapped my around those stars.
- 3:53Right?
- 3:56If you guys don't know who I was imitating there, you need to educate yourselves.
- 4:02Ryan : If you guess correctly on the clip, again, we'll name
- 4:07Kearns: There you go.
- 4:08That'll work.
- 4:09But yeah, we're doing 28 days later, which was um, actually, I know none of
- 4:13the incidentals written by, directed by.
- 4:15I don't remember any of it.
- 4:17Ryan : Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland.
- 4:20Kearns: Yeah.
- 4:21Alex Garland.
- 4:21I did.
- 4:22I would've gotten that one
- 4:23Ryan : we were talking about it right before show.
- 4:25Alex Garland has done a lot, our favorite ex McKinna, as well as
- 4:31Civil War as we talked about.
- 4:33And, one of my favorites, dread, not the 1995 Judge Dread, the Carl
- 4:38Urban 2012 Judge, judge Dread.
- 4:42I messed that
- 4:42Kearns: Kinna
- 4:43Ryan : Dread
- 4:44Kearns: Kinna reminds me of Lafe Nikita and all I could think of was like a covert
- 4:49spy coming in, pretending to be like a Russian au pair to hide from Putin.
- 4:56But she's actually carrying his love child
- 4:59Ryan : played
- 4:59Kearns: Makina
- 5:00Ryan : Johansen.
- 5:01Kearns: the 13 episode first season and shockingly well
- 5:04received on a Ted Turner network.
- 5:07Kinna,
- 5:08Ryan : TNT.
- 5:09Yeah.
- 5:10TNT,
- 5:10Kearns: T-N-T-U-S-A-T-N-T.
- 5:13And um, there was at least one more there.
- 5:20Ryan : yep,
- 5:21Kearns: Turner Broadcasting.
- 5:23Yeah, that's the other one he owned.
- 5:26CNN
- 5:28Ryan : Oh yeah.
- 5:30Kearns: Za.
- 5:31Ryan : news.
- 5:31Kearns: Just popping out networks and beating up Tina.
- 5:37Yeah.
- 5:37Ryan : Yeah.
- 5:38Yeah, he did.
- 5:42Kearns: That's wild.
- 5:43Couldn't have done worse if it was 96.
- 5:45Maybe he did.
- 5:46Well
- 5:47Ryan : and he owned WCW.
- 5:50Kearns: W Yep.
- 5:51Which was on his channel too all the time.
- 5:54But yeah.
- 5:55so writing XM not is an achievement.
- 5:59That is pretty high in my opinion.
- 6:01It's, that was a fantastic movie and the writing's got a lot to do with it.
- 6:05I don't know if it's an adapted screenplay or if he wrote it from the ground up.
- 6:09That does matter.
- 6:10Ryan : up.
- 6:12Kearns: He.
- 6:14Ryan : Yes.
- 6:15Kearns: Do you think he wrote that?
- 6:16Like he came up with the whole concept?
- 6:18Damn.
- 6:19Ryan : yeah.
- 6:20He's amazing.
- 6:21Alex Garland is amazing.
- 6:22I mean, he
- 6:23Kearns: I mean, not
- 6:24Ryan : days later,
- 6:25Kearns: if you zoom out far enough, like Yeah, 28 days later was great too.
- 6:29And it had a lot to do with the small parts.
- 6:31The small moving parts are what make that movie great.
- 6:34Um, and which, yeah, we'll do x mocking on another time, I guess,
- 6:39because I, I got a lot to say about what he did right with that.
- 6:4228 days later, it's the character work in the beginning that's
- 6:46really what draws you in.
- 6:47And we were talking about briefly before the show started, there was
- 6:50something about, the similarity with how it starts and how a
- 6:53beloved a MC series starts as well.
- 6:58Really, the action of the movie starts with, the main
- 7:00characters waking up from a coma.
- 7:12God, that'd be so nice.
- 7:16Ryan : Oh no.
- 7:16Kearns: No.
- 7:17Oh, okay.
- 7:20Inadvertent.
- 7:21Do-gooder.
- 7:22Released Somebody let him, somebody woke him up.
- 7:26Oh.
- 7:28Oh.
- 7:28Right.
- 7:28Because he was an idiot.
- 7:30He was an idiot.
- 7:45Ryan : That's a sign, you know?
- 7:47Kearns: known.
- 7:47Ryan : learned.
- 7:48Kearns: Well, I mean, yeah, they learn bubbles beat to death.
- 7:57Oh, Chimp work Orange.
- 8:04Yeah, Chimp work.
- 8:05Orange is great.
- 8:07I mean it's, it's pretty much the archetype.
- 8:09Fox News was in its infancy at best back then.
- 8:11But I mean, you're pretty much getting the archetype right there.
- 8:14And you can go on the other side for MSN if you want, but that's
- 8:17pretty much what they do to people.
- 8:18The 24 hour news networks, they just turn them into angry rage monsters.
- 8:22Ryan : Oh hundred percent.
- 8:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:31Be like, should lab monkeys be experimented on news at 11?
- 8:37That's actually the old style news.
- 8:39Ryan : that's classic news
- 8:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:40It's local news at 11 is when they would break into your, your eight
- 8:43o'clock movie to tell you that crap.
- 8:45But
- 8:46Ryan : Listen, it's, it's almost 10:00 PM Do you know where your children are at?
- 8:50Kearns: no, but I know where yours are.
- 8:56Those are good too.
- 8:57Ryan : is driving to work right in the morning.
- 9:00They're just like, oh my God.
- 9:02Kearns: Yeah, no.
- 9:03what goes on with the beginning of this movie is great.
- 9:06And I did mention that this movie does start, in my opinion, the start
- 9:09is in the middle of the apocalypse, but they do a good job of opening
- 9:12with the scene of how it begins.
- 9:14So there's no ambiguity.
- 9:15They don't expo dump that later they show us it's pretty cool.
- 9:19And we get an idea of how they develop this rabies adjacent virus that
- 9:23will spread throughout the island of the United Kingdom and Moda or
- 9:29cause everybody to moda each other.
- 9:31And it's important to remind people that it doesn't get off of the island.
- 9:35Water is good.
- 9:38Ryan : Yes,
- 9:39Kearns: So,
- 9:40Ryan : and
- 9:40Kearns: you could see like one leaping onto a ship or something like that.
- 9:43Ryan : maybe, maybe we'll see it,
- 9:45Kearns: I mean, there's a new one coming out, so maybe it does eventually.
- 9:50Ryan : but don't forget about 28 weeks later, I mean, that's gonna be a first
- 9:54watch for me, but something can happen in that where it does, I mean like
- 9:58Kearns: Well, Brian,
- 10:00Ryan : days later, it seems secluded.
- 10:03Kearns: I can explain some things to you, but I think we're just gonna let you
- 10:06believe that as a possibility and watch the movie that the beginning of that one
- 10:13will, will curl your toes, my friend.
- 10:15That movie's opening is harrowing.
- 10:18I loved it.
- 10:20Loved it.
- 10:21I aspire to be as much of a scumbag husband as that man,
- 10:26but I just love my family too much.
- 10:30Ryan : so it's gonna be one of those hateful openings.
- 10:32Okay.
- 10:33Kearns: It's so good.
- 10:34It's, it's very good.
- 10:35I'm not gonna say anything more so I don't ruin it.
- 10:37We'll do another one on that.
- 10:38Anyway, so, Sian Murphy, the Pinky Blind is, is the leading
- 10:42man in this film and lead.
- 10:44He does, although it's, is this, this first movie, like real big movie
- 10:52and then he did Red Eyes soon thereafter, and I was like, oh
- 10:55no, what are they doing to my boy?
- 10:57Um,
- 10:58Ryan : You
- 10:58Kearns: but then he got luckily Peaky Blinders compared, no, not at all.
- 11:02but then he did Peaky Blinders and stuff and we were okay.
- 11:05I was like,
- 11:06Ryan : He was a
- 11:06Kearns: yeah, he, he was great.
- 11:08He didn't overact.
- 11:10It just nailed the role.
- 11:12It was good.
- 11:13Ryan : also in
- 11:13Kearns: Oh
- 11:13Ryan : inception.
- 11:15Kearns: yeah.
- 11:16True.
- 11:16Ryan : Yeah.
- 11:17Kearns: Uh, there's a few big name guys in this movie that are kind of in, I.
- 11:22Bit parts.
- 11:23Big name being again, quotes.
- 11:25Ryan : Are you talking about Mad Eye Moody,
- 11:27Kearns: Yeah, man, I Moody's my guy.
- 11:30Ryan : Brendan Gleason.
- 11:31Kearns: I almost corrected Sian Murphy being the leading man
- 11:33because he, he kind of gets that stolen for about half the film.
- 11:39Ryan : Oh,
- 11:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 11:39He can't stand next to that big old bear
- 11:41Ryan : good.
- 11:43Kearns: and not stand in his shadow.
- 11:44He did a great job too, and he really crushes it in this movie.
- 11:47He really does.
- 11:48Um, so the start of the film is he wakes up from the coma.
- 11:52He, he walks around and everybody's gone and he doesn't
- 11:54know what the hell happened.
- 11:56And eventually he stumbles upon a gaggle of the infected that are like napping
- 12:00in a church or something like that.
- 12:02And they, they, uh, shamble actually, they don't do much shaming.
- 12:07They sprint all out sprint after him and he gets found by a couple of cool,
- 12:15cool, uh, little freedom fight and Fuji.
- 12:20Right.
- 12:22Ryan : Selena
- 12:22Kearns: saying, Ryan?
- 12:24Yeah.
- 12:25Ryan : I, I said Selena and Mark, but I was gonna say, you mentioned them
- 12:27being quick and then you mentioned earlier about them being rab.
- 12:32They have that rabies look in effect and it works out very well, which,
- 12:37um, I was thinking about it reading something earlier, about 28 days later,
- 12:42though it's not considered a zombie film, reinvigorated the zombie genre.
- 12:47Kearns: Oh yeah, a hundred percent.
- 12:48Ryan : for the two, for the early two thousands.
- 12:50like even Resident Evil being popular.
- 12:52'cause I think Resident Evil came out a few months later, which they,
- 12:56that's, that's a whole other thing.
- 12:58They don't consider the movie like a zombie film that's a
- 13:01creature film quote unquote.
- 13:02But that's a discussion for another day.
- 13:05But, a lot of other movies, I think like Dawn The Dead, right, the remake came
- 13:08out in 2003, that had the Fast Zombie, which is very 28 days later inspired.
- 13:14So even though it invigorated it, I mean, and for good
- 13:17stuff and even some bad stuff,
- 13:19Kearns: It was like they were putting it all together at the, at
- 13:21the same resident evil's got slow zombies, fast creatures, right?
- 13:25But the dawn of the dead was being developed alongside probably
- 13:29post-production sort of You gotta imagine they're only a year apart and release.
- 13:35Oh, two years.
- 13:36So it's, I don't know, is, is.
- 13:38Do you think it was possible that they caught a glimpse of
- 13:4028 days later and started making dawn of the dead like right away?
- 13:45Could have.
- 13:45It could have happened then.
- 13:47Then it would've definitely been the fast zombies from that.
- 13:50And then you get the shambling shots from the roof, which was kind of cool too.
- 13:55That was cool.
- 13:55'cause when, when they're inert, they're just kind of normal zombie looking,
- 13:59which is a good, that was a good idea.
- 14:01so any thoughts, John?
- 14:09We won't.
- 14:10Ryan : with the baby zombie.
- 14:12Kearns: I like the first, I like the first 35 minutes of that movie a lot.
- 14:22Ryan : Yep.
- 14:26Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:26There's some cool stuff.
- 14:35Fair.
- 14:36Ryan : Yeah, I agree with that.
- 14:37Kearns: Fair?
- 14:38Ryan : It's like, you know what, it's like the fright night.
- 14:40it wasn't called the remake,
- 14:43Kearns: Mm.
- 14:43Ryan : it wasn't the called Fright Night, it'd be a great movie.
- 14:46But that's what, in our opinion, has hindered it and watch that episode.
- 14:50Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:51Watch it.
- 14:52Damnit.
- 14:52Watch it.
- 14:53back to the movie that's on the title of the episode, uh, 28 days later, we get
- 14:58him to, um, one of the things about this movie too, just to go on another aside.
- 15:02You're not dealing with hoards of zombies.
- 15:05They don't do that to you.
- 15:06That's not part of the big, there's no grandeur, involved.
- 15:09In fact, they do a lot of that with the landscapes and with the travel, and they
- 15:13capture the beauty of the area very well.
- 15:15Um, they do not inundate us with numbers of people.
- 15:18And then we just recently watched a movie that had a much
- 15:22smaller zombie count as well.
- 15:25Right.
- 15:25Ryan : The battery.
- 15:26Kearns: The battery and the battery did a great job with that, as did 28 days later.
- 15:31Uh, you don't need a bajillion of them.
- 15:33You can make the illusion that there's many coming without
- 15:36showing many on screen.
- 15:49Yeah.
- 15:49Which is neat.
- 15:50Ryan : um, in the scene when they go to.
- 15:59Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:01Which is good.
- 16:02very post.
- 16:03I am legendary, by the way.
- 16:05Speaking of fast zombies, another one, another movie with the quickies.
- 16:10so Sian Murphy meets with, with the, the two, uh, actor or
- 16:14the character names you said.
- 16:16Ryan : Uh, Selena and Mark.
- 16:17Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:17Selena.
- 16:18Mark.
- 16:18Selena.
- 16:19Well, sorry about that.
- 16:20Mark.
- 16:21Selena's great, and she develops well.
- 16:23Ryan : she's awesome.
- 16:25Kearns: Um, and she carries, yeah, she's I actress that I've seen.
- 16:29Maybe in one other movie, I think maybe two.
- 16:31Ryan : Harris.
- 16:32Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:33Ryan : Miss
- 16:34Kearns: have, yeah.
- 16:39Yeah.
- 16:40And she's great.
- 16:41but she's, you know, you, that was the first time we saw her too, and
- 16:44she carried the role really well.
- 16:47they get into it, they, they basically, they save him, Selena,
- 16:51mark save him, and then they bring him, uh, they give him some Snickers
- 16:55and say, all right, let's go.
- 16:56And they start moving through and eventually they get, they see a, uh,
- 17:01apartment building with some nightlights or some like Christmas lights strung
- 17:05up and they decide to go investigate.
- 17:09Ryan : they go to his house, his parents' house.
- 17:11Kearns: Oh, yeah.
- 17:12Ryan : you mentioned with the whole light thing, that's when you
- 17:15learn about them being attracted, I guess to like the movement.
- 17:19But they are attracted to light.
- 17:20They have their senses and Jim Clia Murphy lights the candle.
- 17:24And when I, again, watching it for the first time, I saw it coming,
- 17:30but the creature still jumping through the window is still freaky.
- 17:34It gave
- 17:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 17:34Ryan : and evil, like Doberman vibes.
- 17:37Kearns: Well, they do first person perspective from the creature
- 17:39first or from the infected for the run up to the window.
- 17:42That, that catches you off guard too.
- 17:44Yeah.
- 17:45Ryan : And it's all shaky and stuff and it's like, oh, this is pretty cool.
- 17:48Evil dead like
- 17:49Kearns: Yeah.
- 17:50Ryan : right there.
- 17:51Kearns: Panting like a dog.
- 17:52and then of course we kill one of our dudes and Selena's a g about it.
- 17:57She's just like, you know what,
- 17:58Ryan : yeah,
- 17:58Kearns: it happens, don't, don't do something stupid and kill somebody else.
- 18:02Ryan : he's like crying.
- 18:03He is like, no.
- 18:04He's like, no.
- 18:06Boom.
- 18:07Kearns: beats him.
- 18:07Did she, uh, machetes him to death in front of him?
- 18:11Yeah, it's a brutal,
- 18:19Ryan : That's cool.
- 18:32So when I initially watching it and I saw that, I thought she
- 18:36was just cutting the arm off.
- 18:37I was like, okay, maybe she's helping him out.
- 18:39But then when she goes for the second swing and goes for like
- 18:42in the neck area, I was like, oh shit, she's not taking anyone.
- 18:47And I feel like you, you know, you mentioned the Walking Dead.
- 18:50they only listened to Shane, none of that shit would've happened.
- 18:54All right.
- 18:55Kearns: I mean.
- 18:56Ryan : that.
- 18:56And mean, Selena's doing the right thing.
- 18:59She's just going, she's just going haywire.
- 19:02And in this situation, I mean, have to, as you see how like the infected
- 19:08earth rabid, um, and even when they turn, as we'll talk about later,
- 19:14the, the turning process is quick.
- 19:16And they even say it, it takes 20 seconds for them to turn, and it's
- 19:20through blood, it's through saliva.
- 19:22It's like, different.
- 19:26I, I love it.
- 19:27I, I, I love it.
- 19:36Yeah.
- 19:41Kearns: Unreal.
- 19:42Yeah, you can't, you can't fight that.
- 19:44They, the only other film where they may get that quick is World War Z, isn't it?
- 19:48No, they, it's Dawn of the Dead as well is fast.
- 19:51There's no long drawn out turning process.
- 19:54Dawn of the Dead is fast too.
- 19:55Um.
- 20:08Hmm.
- 20:11Yeah.
- 20:13Yeah.
- 20:19Getting weak and then they die.
- 20:21And then they turn, then they wake up again.
- 20:24Yeah.
- 20:26It's necessary, I think.
- 20:28Ryan : this transition is like, can be like when they're awake
- 20:31and you see it, see that turn.
- 20:33It's very like vampiric in its way, you
- 20:36Kearns: Hmm.
- 20:36Ryan : like the quickness and just like The rage.
- 20:47Kearns: Oh yeah.
- 20:48So.
- 20:50Backed flash forward to the apartment building because relevant.
- 20:55So they see lights and they run, they run up a stairwell
- 20:58'cause the elevators are out.
- 20:59You idiots.
- 21:00And they run up the stairs?
- 21:01Yeah.
- 21:02And um, they get up to the top and basically judged, dread,
- 21:06standing there, waiting for them.
- 21:08And
- 21:08Ryan : Good old,
- 21:09Kearns: they're being chased by, of course they have to get chased up these stairs
- 21:13and, um, what's his name in the movie?
- 21:16Ryan : Frank.
- 21:17Kearns: Frank, right?
- 21:18Frank just clubs them to death and throws them, well not even to death.
- 21:22Tosses 'em over the side and they plummet seven, eight stories to
- 21:26the bottom, which is pretty neat.
- 21:28And then they get invited into this lovely apartment with a
- 21:30father and daughter, very homey.
- 21:51He was linebacker out.
- 21:52Yeah, he had like everything.
- 21:55He was smart.
- 21:56Yeah.
- 21:56The riot show was solid.
- 22:00Yeah.
- 22:01Interesting.
- 22:03Would you leave your suit, your mobile suit?
- 22:07No.
- 22:10Yeah.
- 22:13You mean drastically reduce your chance of becoming infected?
- 22:15Nah, I'll leave it at home.
- 22:17So
- 22:18Ryan : I'll take my chances.
- 22:20Kearns: Frank and daughter, daughter's name.
- 22:22Ryan : Hannah.
- 22:24Kearns: Hannah Montana.
- 22:25So Frank and Hannah, Montana,
- 22:27Ryan : from it.
- 22:28Kearns: um, get Yeah, through, they get brought into, um, the fold into
- 22:33the major group and they leave the apartment and they decide they're
- 22:36going to travel to find this group that they've been hearing on the radio.
- 22:42Frank, one of 'em, cranky radios, cranky crank, crank, crank, crank.
- 22:50Ryan : Mm-hmm.
- 22:51Kearns: So they wanna head over there
- 22:53Ryan : Yeah.
- 23:06Well, we also know they didn't watch one is because when they're traveling, first
- 23:09Kearns: in the
- 23:10Ryan : under a, hold on.
- 23:11They, they, okay.
- 23:12True, true.
- 23:14On that.
- 23:15True.
- 23:16Kearns: just a little.
- 23:17Ryan : they were, were 50.
- 23:19It was like 75% helpful, 25%, like no, 25% helpful, 75% disaster.
- 23:26But I digress on that.
- 23:27they, they make the mistake by going under the tunnel.
- 23:31All right.
- 23:31I
- 23:32Kearns: Yeah.
- 23:32That's wild.
- 23:34Ryan : Jim's like, oh, this is a great idea.
- 23:36they run over and they go in there, he runs over the cars.
- 23:40This, this cab is like a tank.
- 23:42It's like a Buick He runs over the cars, he pops the tire, like Jim warns him.
- 23:48And then as you're watching it, right, you hear like they're changing
- 23:52the tire, they're going as fast.
- 23:53The thrill, you know, the intensity like seeing like the,
- 23:58the rabbit, the creature's coming.
- 24:00You're on the edge and it's just, it's so good.
- 24:03And you know, I was thinking about, I was thinking about prom night I was
- 24:07thinking like, this is what, like, they didn't need like creatures or
- 24:11zombies in it, but they need more of a thrill to make it even better.
- 24:15And the conversation came up, last night.
- 24:17I went to see the M eighties, which is like a eighties homage band,
- 24:22at the Pub Valley Golf course, which was, it was an amazing show.
- 24:25They kicked ass and we talked about prom night.
- 24:28And I mentioned that it was overrated and they were shocked that I said that.
- 24:31I said, well, if you really look at it like, alright, you have Leslie
- 24:35Nielsen, you have Jamie Lee Curtis.
- 24:37But there's like to it except the same slasher.
- 24:41The stuff for Slick, slick was great.
- 24:44Now, with 28 days later, there's like every opportunity for a thrill.
- 24:49You're on the edge of your seat.
- 24:50Even for the smallest thing.
- 24:52Even if you know something wrong is gonna go haywire,
- 24:56you're still like, entertained.
- 24:57You're into it, you're awake.
- 25:00You're like, what's gonna happen?
- 25:02And that's because of the acting and the writing by Alex Garland.
- 25:06Kearns: Yeah, I mean, each scene is heavy for the right reasons,
- 25:09um, or light for the right reasons.
- 25:11When they, when they're on their trip, they go into a
- 25:14grocery store and they loot the.
- 25:15Grocery store like a bunch of little kids, and they get all the wine and candy
- 25:19and cereal and junk food they could ever want, and he leaves his credit card on
- 25:24the on the counter when they walk out.
- 25:25That was great too.
- 25:26Yeah.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:53Ryan : And Yeah,
- 26:05and he's got his daughter changing it.
- 26:07And like the two men who would be able to defend her, lifting the car
- 26:11up, she's going as fast as she can.
- 26:14Like Celine kicks ass, but against the whole pack that that's not gonna work out.
- 26:20Kearns: Now.
- 26:21Ryan : it's, it's a risk.
- 26:23And agreed.
- 26:24Frank doesn't know.
- 26:25He doesn't realize, and it happens when they go to the base and he travels
- 26:30through and it's like empty, desolate.
- 26:33It's like a scene from days gone, like when you first drive to the army
- 26:36base and like you see the carnage.
- 26:38That's what it was.
- 26:39And him freaking out.
- 26:41he realizes and he kind of like succumbs to the reality that the
- 26:46world isn't what it seems anymore.
- 26:48Like fully realizes I
- 26:50Kearns: Yeah, the previous chapter is closed.
- 26:52We're in this now.
- 26:53There's no going back to that.
- 26:55Like,
- 26:56Ryan : Yeah.
- 26:57Kearns: which is un ironically what they end up doing later and still,
- 27:06yeah, he does figure it out fast.
- 27:08Uh, and, but Celine's like in it, like, you gotta get real, you
- 27:12gotta understand like Celine knows.
- 27:19Oh, fair.
- 27:20Yeah,
- 27:28that's true.
- 27:29Ryan : also realizes it when he kills that boy.
- 27:32Kearns: Yeah, it's tough Scene.
- 27:34Ryan : like, yeah,
- 27:45yeah.
- 27:54Kearns: That's when Zombie Anakin comes in and he executes order 66.
- 28:00Ryan : I have the high ground.
- 28:01What
- 28:02Kearns: There's too many Annie, what are we gonna do?
- 28:06Ryan : Made that joke to my dogs.
- 28:08Kearns: yeah.
- 28:08Ryan : One dog jumped, ONT, uh, Ali jumped on the higher, they
- 28:12were like fighting, play fighting.
- 28:13And uh, Ali jumped on the armrest and Kirti's looking at him.
- 28:16And I just looked at her and I was like, he's got the higher ground.
- 28:20Kearns: Uh, so this is the part of the movie where, the romance is
- 28:23starting to kick up a bit too, just in time for them to get taken into the
- 28:26army base by a bunch of horny dudes.
- 28:29Hey.
- 28:30And it,
- 28:30Ryan : about Frank turning.
- 28:32Kearns: well, yeah, we're gonna get there.
- 28:39Ryan : Yep.
- 28:39Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 28:40A lot of freedom.
- 28:49It's very, IFC by the way, they do the same shit in monsters and stuff.
- 28:53Like when they did that, like a lot of low budget movies really nailed down
- 28:56that whole freedom shot thing before.
- 28:59Uh, clamping down on the opposite.
- 29:02And, and, but it really highlights the fact that they're driving into the jaws
- 29:08of the real beast, which is interesting.
- 29:12Oh,
- 29:20aw.
- 29:20It's 'cause it's,
- 29:24it's based on real life.
- 29:26So when the shit goes down, it's usually that's the number one issue.
- 29:30And then the issue that's driving them crazy is the number two issue.
- 29:34which is like this, that and the other thing.
- 29:37So Frank, at the Yeah.
- 29:39We get to the military thing.
- 29:40Do, did you wanna pause for a sec?
- 29:49Yeah.
- 29:54Yeah.
- 29:55That
- 29:55Ryan : Yeah.
- 29:55Kearns: when Celine's sling in drugs to everybody.
- 29:59Ryan : She's like, I got some sleeping pills right here.
- 30:01Kearns: You won't notice.
- 30:07Yeah.
- 30:08Ryan : Only half a pill
- 30:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 30:10Ryan : you get addicted.
- 30:17Can I have, it's the, it's post-apocalyptic.
- 30:20thrown out the window.
- 30:22Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 30:33Ryan : Yeah.
- 30:35Kearns: Ah, I think that's kind of celine's edge, but for me it that that's
- 30:40a you're, that's when you're ready to give up and they're fighting awfully hard
- 30:44to be ready to give up in their sleep.
- 30:45Although that would be a nice way to go.
- 30:48'cause you wouldn't really notice it.
- 30:50Ryan : imagine what she's seen for 28 days.
- 30:53She's seen like the evolution of this whole
- 30:56Kearns: it's gonna take a psychological
- 30:57Ryan : chaos.
- 30:59Oh yeah.
- 30:59And like that romance kind of brings her back to reality.
- 31:04But also those soldiers,
- 31:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 31:07So we,
- 31:08Ryan : into reality.
- 31:09Kearns: we get to the military station, things are looking
- 31:12a little weird, so Frank and everybody are out looking around.
- 31:15A lot of dead, a lot of dead infected, like very clear that the, like, people
- 31:20didn't look like people were massacred.
- 31:22It looked like they had been shooting infected and they were all over the place.
- 31:38Ryan : Yes.
- 31:44Yep.
- 31:45That,
- 31:55Kearns: Yeah.
- 31:59So I mean, I wouldn't, I wouldn't doubt that they would rob any sort of, any,
- 32:05especially for a TV show, which doesn't have the budget anyway, so to grab
- 32:10whatever they could figure out how to save money, it's 28 days later wasn't,
- 32:14uh, didn't cost a trillion dollars.
- 32:17Right.
- 32:18Ryan : uh,
- 32:18Kearns: And what was the production cost?
- 32:20Ryan : 8 million I think.
- 32:22Kearns: 8 million 2001
- 32:25Ryan : Uh, $8 million budget and it made $84.6 million
- 32:30Kearns: Total, or like in the first year.
- 32:33Wow.
- 32:33I thought did
- 32:34Ryan : overall
- 32:34Kearns: better than that because I saw it in theaters too,
- 32:37and that theater was packed.
- 32:39Ryan : For 2002.
- 32:40I mean, if you do inflation, it's probably over a trillion,
- 32:44Kearns: No, it's not over a trillion.
- 32:49You clown
- 32:51Ryan : A good outlook on now.
- 32:55Kearns: it.
- 32:55At least double.
- 32:57Yeah.
- 32:58Maybe less than double, but still not a trillion.
- 33:01Ryan : Too hot.
- 33:02Kearns: Oh, you're funny.
- 33:03The way you said it was such conviction.
- 33:05Um, what made me laugh?
- 33:07You're a freaking riot dude.
- 33:09Uh, so they arrive.
- 33:12What happens to Frank?
- 33:13I've tried to roll into this twice.
- 33:15I'm not doing it again.
- 33:16Ryan, what happens to Frank?
- 33:18Ryan : He, he gets so angry he kicks the door a blood droplet.
- 33:23It's a really cool seeing, the blood droplet just goes right into
- 33:27his eye and he knows immediately.
- 33:29Kearns: Oh, and then we follow it with a camera too.
- 33:32That's that was a.
- 33:33Ryan : a, that's a heart wrenching scene.
- 33:35'cause you, you as a audience member, you like Frank, you love Brendan Gleason,
- 33:40but you like the character Frank.
- 33:42He plays him so well.
- 33:43You make like a good connection then he gets it in the eye and
- 33:48it's like, it's not pink eye like, you know, and knocked up, but,
- 33:53Kearns: It's just the first thing he does is he gets Hannah aware of
- 33:57it, tells her to get away, and then tells her he loves her real quick.
- 34:00And I was like, oh God.
- 34:02Ryan : you see the rage?
- 34:03The rage is like opening up.
- 34:04He's like, I love you.
- 34:05And he is
- 34:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:07Ryan : I like, he played it like he was in like a heavy metal concert.
- 34:10I, I appreciated it.
- 34:12Kearns: And then he gets the shit shot out of him like instantly by a bunch of
- 34:16Ryan : That
- 34:17Kearns: ball shaven military dudes.
- 34:19And they sucked.
- 34:21They're the worst.
- 34:23Ryan : they look like the kids from Mother's Day.
- 34:25Some of them.
- 34:26Kearns: Isn't Dr. Who in this or is that a different actor?
- 34:29Ryan : No.
- 34:30Uh,
- 34:30Kearns: Who's the colonel?
- 34:31Ryan : is Major Henry West.
- 34:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:35Isn't that Dr. Who?
- 34:36One of them.
- 34:37Ryan : Yep.
- 34:37That's Dr. Who?
- 34:38And that's Malus
- 34:40Kearns: He's probably the biggest actor in this movie.
- 34:42Ryan : huh?
- 34:44Wouldn't you think Brendan Glee?
- 34:46Kearns: Um, Ren and Gleason.
- 34:50Ryan : Putting him in
- 34:51Kearns: I think this movie would pick him up into the, into
- 34:53the Stratosphere too, though.
- 34:55I, I know he was more prolific than I almost everybody else, but I think
- 35:00this movie really gave him a nudge.
- 35:02Ryan : Yeah, I can see that.
- 35:06Kearns: yeah.
- 35:07Was he like in the theater?
- 35:08Ryan : Oh God, yes.
- 35:10Kearns: theater?
- 35:11Ryan : Let's see.
- 35:17He
- 35:17Kearns: were teeing us up for that one.
- 35:19Jane Austen movies.
- 35:21That's a choice.
- 35:22I mean.
- 35:23Ryan : Braveheart, mission Impossible two, uh, Kings of New York.
- 35:28Right after 28 days later, he was in gigs of New
- 35:31Kearns: Yeah, they, they, he got cast in it, right?
- 35:35Afterward they're like, we need Irish guys.
- 35:37Like, yeah, we got it, dude.
- 35:39Big ones that fight.
- 35:40Yeah, we got it, dude.
- 35:41Sorry about it.
- 35:42We got that one.
- 35:44Ryan : You know, I was watching a clip real quick.
- 35:46I want to, I'll quick second.
- 35:48I was watching a clip with Daniel Day Lewis, and they were talking about
- 35:51how he actually a piece of glass on his eye and it took him like a couple
- 35:57weeks to do the knife tapping scene.
- 36:00Like that's method acting right there.
- 36:02Just
- 36:02Kearns: Well, he's psychotic.
- 36:04He's borderline psychotic with it.
- 36:09Yeah.
- 36:09And he's fantastic actor.
- 36:11Everything he's in.
- 36:12I see.
- 36:13Period.
- 36:14Uh, well did, he's probably truly retired this time, but yeah.
- 36:21He's phenomenal.
- 36:24Uh, can you imagine if he was in this movie?
- 36:25Whoa.
- 36:26Ryan : Oh
- 36:27Kearns: Who do you play?
- 36:28Daniel Day Lewis, and 28 days later, who does he play?
- 36:32Ryan : He
- 36:32Kearns: Selena?
- 36:33Yeah.
- 36:37Yep.
- 36:37He would do the major.
- 36:38Well, all right.
- 36:40I was kind of hoping we get to see a sex scene with Sian Murphy, but all right.
- 36:43See how good his method acting is then?
- 36:47Yeah, exactly.
- 36:50Ryan : Come out,
- 36:51Kearns: Uh, like Robert Downey Jr. Up from Tropic Thunder, go the whole nine.
- 36:55Don't change anything about the character, but is Daniel Day Lewis?
- 37:01Yeah, we would've not been ready in 2001 for such.
- 37:05Goodness.
- 37:06all right.
- 37:07I. So the major, the major, um, as we go in, I don't know if they name,
- 37:12they probably do name a few of 'em 'cause they all yell at each other
- 37:15throughout the rest of the movie.
- 37:17but I don't remember any of their names 'cause they're all useless father.
- 37:23Ryan : Mm-hmm.
- 37:27Kearns: That's a good one.
- 37:28So they bring him in, they bring, uh, Sian and the ladies.
- 37:31That's for to here, two, four to be referred to as Cian and
- 37:36ladies into the military base.
- 37:38They seem very enthusiastic about their company.
- 37:40It's immediately off-putting, uh, but not in your face.
- 37:44You don't really know until the trap door shuts.
- 37:56Mm-hmm.
- 38:00Yeah.
- 38:04Ryan : There is a tell though with Sergeant Farrell, like he's very off
- 38:09putting about them, looking at the women.
- 38:12So it's like a foreshadow of something
- 38:14Kearns: yeah.
- 38:15'cause he is trying to keep them in line about it, right?
- 38:17'cause he promised the men.
- 38:19So basically what we're saying, everybody is they've lured them in
- 38:22so they could procreate with the lady folk that are in the group.
- 38:28Ryan : Yeah.
- 38:33Yes.
- 38:42Kearns: You know what's annoying though, if you think about it.
- 38:45If they hadn't been so abrupt or even forthright about that plan and just
- 38:51been normal, treated them normal.
- 38:53Eventually there's two women and a bunch of dudes.
- 38:57Eventually they're gonna pair up with somebody and you're
- 38:59gonna get the result anyway.
- 39:01So why do you have to turn it into a whole weird, creepy,
- 39:05you know, priman Okta thing.
- 39:08Damn British.
- 39:10No Riz none.
- 39:12Riz.
- 39:13Ryan : all, Celia Murphy's Irish.
- 39:15So that's a whole different.
- 39:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 39:16So is Henry Cabell.
- 39:18Ryan : Yeah.
- 39:19Kearns: So is Henry Cabell.
- 39:21The end, end of argument.
- 39:22I lose.
- 39:25Ryan : No, Henry, I love Henry Ka
- 39:28Kearns: Of course.
- 39:29That's why I lose mostly heterosexual men that lust after that, man.
- 39:34So I digress.
- 39:37Uh, so yeah, we're at that scene.
- 39:39Uh, it's a pivotal scene, like we said earlier about how it's the
- 39:43people you have to worry about, not the zombies or the infected.
- 39:47For this movie.
- 39:48Uh, but then we get the, we get a ending sequence that is just fricking good, dude.
- 39:53It, it really does prop the movie up to another level.
- 39:56It's already a good movie, but then it jumps, and it's the musical score
- 40:00that really brings it there too.
- 40:02Ryan : Yes.
- 40:11Kearns: Oh really?
- 40:13Ryan : Okay.
- 40:14That's cool.
- 40:20Okay.
- 40:20Kearns: paint my house to that music for sure.
- 40:25For sure.
- 40:27Ryan : turning every second.
- 40:29Is there something
- 40:29Kearns: Yeah.
- 40:31So, uh, they, they, uh, bring Ian's character.
- 40:35I can't remember his name.
- 40:36I've been fishing for you guys to say his damn name.
- 40:38Oh, Jim.
- 40:39Ryan : been saying
- 40:39Kearns: They bring in Jim.
- 40:41Have you been saying it?
- 40:42I haven't been picking up on it.
- 40:42So they've been bringing Jim to, uh, the, to goddamn to the trash pile to shoot him.
- 40:49And uh, the other guy who tries to stick up for the girls, they bring him too.
- 40:53'cause he's gotta go stupid
- 40:55Ryan : Sergeant
- 40:55Kearns: narc.
- 40:56Stupid prude.
- 40:57Sergeant Farrell.
- 40:59So they bring stupid Sergeant Ferrell over and they get ready to execute.
- 41:03And, um, what happens Does he spit in his face?
- 41:07There's some distraction that occurs
- 41:09Ryan : Yeah.
- 41:10Kearns: and silly and Jim rolls off to the side and hides amongst the bodies and they
- 41:13can't figure out which, and they don't, they shoot like randomly into the pile.
- 41:18Ryan : No, they run by it.
- 41:19Kearns: Oh, they ran by him where he was, does he do anything revolutionary?
- 41:24I think it just lays down next to them.
- 41:25Right.
- 41:27Ryan : Yeah,
- 41:33Kearns: Yeah, it's wild.
- 41:34That's a great point too, that he doesn't just sit there.
- 41:37'cause if he waited long enough they might have noticed him.
- 41:41He gets up and he launches.
- 41:42So, and that's pretty much the moral of the story for the end too.
- 41:47He doesn't sit still until way later, so.
- 41:52Ryan : crazy.
- 41:54Like in a good way though,
- 41:55Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:55He berserkers.
- 41:57Ryan : Once you hear the siren, you know it's just game over.
- 42:00Or they're like, he ran away.
- 42:01They're like, what do you mean?
- 42:02He ran away?
- 42:02And they're like, oh, he's done.
- 42:03They hear the siren.
- 42:04They're like, oh fuck, we messed up.
- 42:07Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 42:08Ryan : And.
- 42:09It's just so good.
- 42:11Kearns: Does he draw infected back with him on purpose or no?
- 42:17Yeah, he does that.
- 42:18But does he draw any of them back in?
- 42:20No.
- 42:20Right.
- 42:20He just get, makes his way back.
- 42:29Well, 'cause he's turning them as he goes, right?
- 42:32So it goes 1, 2, 3, 5, 7.
- 42:35So yeah.
- 42:37And they get after it.
- 42:39It's, it does, um, the power of surprise over the power of firearms does get
- 42:43highlighted in that scene too, because the infected are coming through the
- 42:47halls and catching people off guard.
- 42:50David, the, these soldiers who have done such a great job of setting up a
- 42:53perimeter and holding that perimeter are infiltrated and that changes things
- 42:58drastically and they become complacent.
- 43:12Ryan : Yeah.
- 43:20Kearns: Yeah, it's true.
- 43:21they were claiming that they were doing it for research purposes, but you could tell
- 43:24there's kind of a frat boy vibe to it,
- 43:28Ryan : Oh yeah.
- 43:34Kearns: seeing how long it takes it to die.
- 43:38And they mentioned, they mentioned the time of the amount of time he'd
- 43:42been there and it was substantial.
- 43:44He'd been chilling in that little courtyard room.
- 43:46Ryan : he looked full.
- 43:47He
- 43:48Kearns: He looked,
- 43:48Ryan : going anywhere.
- 43:50Kearns: he looked full.
- 43:51Ryan : some people,
- 43:52Kearns: Oh, they were carving it.
- 44:05Oh, good call.
- 44:09Didn't think about that.
- 44:11But I did, uh, I mean, think the visceral part about him being chained up and stuff
- 44:16too then kind of hit you in the stomach.
- 44:18I'm glad that I'm blissfully unaware of that stuff every now and again because
- 44:22I didn't need that to be in my, yeah.
- 44:24But for this movie, it didn't need to be in my mind space, you know what I mean?
- 44:28So it would've muddied the waters.
- 44:37I could be stuck in the brain of the zeitgeist.
- 44:40We all have it in like our back of our minds, but,
- 44:43Ryan : Yeah.
- 44:43But
- 44:43Kearns: um,
- 44:45Ryan : and he goes ape shit on him.
- 44:46He gets this revenge spewing sp.
- 44:48Kearns: women meanwhile by the way, have been, we've kind of
- 44:51forgot about them before we get to the, they unleashed scene.
- 44:56They've been, they've been washed and groomed and clothed, and they're
- 45:01ready for prom night, last episode.
- 45:06Ryan : Well, Celine's got like, she's all drugged.
- 45:09Uh, not Selena.
- 45:09Um, Hannah's all drugged up because of
- 45:12Kearns: So, so Celine?
- 45:13Ryan : through that.
- 45:15Kearns: Yeah.
- 45:15Celine, uh, brings it to her and says, this will make you not care
- 45:21about what's about to happen,
- 45:23Ryan : yeah.
- 45:23Kearns: which was good, but then that's a problem when the shit hits the fan
- 45:26and she has to care about things.
- 45:28But it actually saves her life a few times because she would've freaked out.
- 45:33But instead, she's just chilling there, very calm, making the
- 45:36right de decisions, but very calm.
- 45:39Ryan : very nonchalant
- 45:40Kearns: That can't be Xanax.
- 45:42Or what if they give her, I'd love to find something that doesn't make
- 45:45me drowsy, that makes me not care.
- 45:48Ryan : They say it.
- 45:49They say it.
- 45:49I think in the film she says
- 45:51Kearns: Yeah.
- 45:52Ryan : times,
- 45:53Kearns: sponsored this movie.
- 45:55Ryan : so
- 46:02I don't know.
- 46:02I mean, reviews were high in COVID, supposedly based on the articles I was
- 46:07reading before the episode we were seeing
- 46:14it's one of the highest movies
- 46:25Kearns: Tremble came out with, um, what is it?
- 46:27Somebody's song, which is a basically 28 days later style virus.
- 46:31But the rabies spread more slowly, takes a while for it.
- 46:36Uh, it's not outbreak, it's somebody's song, like Sarah's song or something.
- 46:40It's, I think it's tremble.
- 46:42It's over here somewhere.
- 46:43Where is it?
- 46:43Oh, survivor song right there.
- 46:46And it came out at, just as we got locked down and he laughed
- 46:50all the way to the bank.
- 46:51It, because it was a perfect timing and it's a, it's a good book.
- 46:55It's a zombie book, but it's a pregnant lady trying to get her kid
- 47:00sorted out, and she's been bitten.
- 47:03Ryan : Gotcha.
- 47:05Kearns: It's a good concept.
- 47:07And she's there at the hospital.
- 47:09They make their way to the hospital.
- 47:11They go to the hospital, and then there's, from there it's a
- 47:13whole, it gets wonky from there.
- 47:15But yeah.
- 47:16Good stuff.
- 47:17Same concept.
- 47:19so yeah, during the lockdown, I think I, I think I almost watched
- 47:22outbreak, the movie outbreak during lockdown and I decided against it.
- 47:26'cause I was like, no, thank you.
- 47:29You did.
- 47:30No, I didn't need any more of that shit.
- 47:42That's how you yourself up for it.
- 47:48Yeah.
- 47:50Ryan : Well,
- 47:51Kearns: Too bad.
- 47:51It's not concurrent.
- 47:55Out here and there.
- 48:03I like when the crazy old bitch with dementia throws the
- 48:0510 million diamond overboard.
- 48:07That's my favorite part of the movie.
- 48:10It's like she fucked up again.
- 48:12Stop letting her drop things into the ocean first, Jack.
- 48:16Now that's,
- 48:20yes.
- 48:20It's bad stuff happens.
- 48:22She was there when the submersible went down the Titan submersible.
- 48:29Did you see they released footage of that, by the way, the, it's the re.
- 48:33There's a, they just released reaction footage.
- 48:37'cause she was watching the laptop when it imploded.
- 48:40And she goes, did you hear that thud?
- 48:42And you like they heard the second it happened, but they didn't know that it
- 48:47had imploded yet, which is wild too.
- 48:50I.
- 48:54I was just released in court papers and in court proceedings rather.
- 48:57So I don't know if it has to do with documentary or not, but it could be.
- 49:00it was cool.
- 49:01It was hard to watch too 'cause her husband was the guy in it and she was sort
- 49:06of like, did you hear that strange noise?
- 49:08And that was his head hopping.
- 49:12Yeah.
- 49:13Too much cut Ryan.
- 49:14Cut that.
- 49:18If it's in it, if it's left in and you guys didn't like it, it's 'cause Ryan
- 49:21didn't cut it and he was supposed to.
- 49:24Ryan : The head popping is better than the other thing.
- 49:27Kearns: It's true.
- 49:28Ryan : Patreon,
- 49:29Kearns: It all popped.
- 49:30It all popped.
- 49:32Um, so, all right.
- 49:34So I did that part now Ryan, you get to run with the part
- 49:36you wanted to talk about.
- 49:37What do they do with the, the chained up guy?
- 49:41Maddox, I.
- 49:42Ryan : I mean, Jim shoots him.
- 49:44Oh, shoots the chain and he just goes, buck wild.
- 49:47And the thing is, is like he's just going into every room left and right.
- 49:51And I feel like can go after, I mean, he's going after anyone.
- 49:55He's of infected, but it's one of the infected And it seems
- 49:59like he's targeting them.
- 50:00He's targeting all, targeting all the soldiers.
- 50:03is interesting 'cause it shows that maybe, maybe there's a little
- 50:06development and he's infected creatures.
- 50:10Like they're smarter than what they look.
- 50:12And it shows slowly, like in small parts of the movie, they
- 50:16are intelligent, The private here.
- 50:19Private mailer.
- 50:20Mailer.
- 50:21He was.
- 50:23He was targeting and shows the intelligences has grown on him.
- 50:27He's adapted.
- 50:33Kearns: Yeah.
- 50:34Does that happen?
- 50:36Yeah.
- 50:36Ryan : the Dead.
- 50:37Yep.
- 50:39Kearns: A lot of similarities.
- 50:41Um, he takes down most of the soldiers.
- 50:44Jim gets into a fight with some of the soldiers, gets into a fight
- 50:47with, uh, the major, doesn't he?
- 50:50They get into the scrum.
- 50:52Yeah, they get into a scrum.
- 50:53Yeah.
- 50:53Jim takes one for the team.
- 50:55They get in the car, they have their fantasm moment where
- 50:59they do the freeze frame.
- 51:01Ryan : Oh, he gets pulled out the window.
- 51:02That's
- 51:03Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:03Ryan : moment.
- 51:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:05It was pretty cool.
- 51:05Everything in the car at the end reminded me of Fantasm, especially
- 51:08rewatching phantasm just getting yanked outta the car and everything.
- 51:12But they escape.
- 51:13Uh, Hannah and all of 'em, they all get out and drive off into the sunset.
- 51:18And you, you assume Jim's gonna die.
- 51:20He's dead.
- 51:21Ryan : Well, you guys know there's alternative endings, right?
- 51:26Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:27Ryan : Okay.
- 51:28Say
- 51:29Kearns: I wondered.
- 51:31Ryan : all of 'em.
- 51:32Jim does die in each one.
- 51:34And it wasn't popular.
- 51:36It wasn't popular by audiences.
- 51:39Kearns: Mom.
- 51:39'cause we like Jim not dying.
- 51:41It's true.
- 51:42I enjoyed the one where you lived too.
- 51:44The, the movie deserved a happy ending, I think.
- 51:47And it got one, uh, the theatrical release got one, right?
- 51:52Yeah.
- 51:53Ryan : they had no choice.
- 51:54I mean,
- 51:54Kearns: did you see the alternate?
- 51:56Did you see the alternate endings?
- 51:59Ryan : No, no, I, I, uh, read about them how like there's one
- 52:02where he gets killed instantly.
- 52:04There's one where he dies in a coma and it's in a dream
- 52:07sequence, and the other one is.
- 52:11So Frank lived and Jim does a blood transfusion 'cause they find this
- 52:17laboratory and he saves Frank, which
- 52:21Kearns: That would've been the worst one.
- 52:24Ryan : like, but then how, how do you hate it?
- 52:26Because like Frank was a good character too.
- 52:28So it's like, who's better?
- 52:30Frank or Jim?
- 52:31I mean
- 52:32Kearns: Frank needed
- 52:33Ryan : obviously.
- 52:34Kearns: to die.
- 52:40Ryan : Yeah.
- 52:41That's, imagine him shirtless running around.
- 52:53No, no, not Frank.
- 52:57Kearns: There you have it, you have the ending where they have
- 53:00the word help strewn about and clothes, which was cool too.
- 53:04That shows them like stitching those together into the big sign for help
- 53:09and then eventually, oh, hello.
- 53:11Right?
- 53:12And then, then a, uh, an airplane flies over and that's how the movie ends.
- 53:18You realize it, it is not a worldwide issue.
- 53:21Just the United Kingdom is hit.
- 53:25It'd be kind of cool if it never made it to Scotland, but it does, it does.
- 53:29Ryan : You just wanna see Mel Gibson with a sword and a and a kilt.
- 53:33All right,
- 53:34Kearns: He loves killing British zombies too.
- 53:37Um, so that's 28 days later, guys.
- 53:39It, it's a fantastic watch, um, obviously because you must have seen it and you're
- 53:45gonna see it again because the third movie's coming out in the near future.
- 53:51I don't know what the release date is.
- 53:52End of June.
- 53:53Oh, we gotta see that.
- 53:54We gotta see that imax That's gonna be insufferable though.
- 54:00I hate seeing movies in theaters these days, especially with
- 54:03specific types of crowds and this type of crowd's gonna suck.
- 54:07Ryan : I missed out on sinners.
- 54:09Sinners isn't even in theaters.
- 54:11Kearns: Yeah, let's hope.
- 54:14Let's hope
- 54:15Ryan : this is
- 54:16Kearns: we saw Minecraft.
- 54:16Ryan : good,
- 54:17Kearns: Speaking of great crowds,
- 54:24I might.
- 54:26Oh, okay.
- 54:27Ryan : I
- 54:27Kearns: Well, I mean, they're teenagers though, 'cause that's who sucks.
- 54:32And that's not our target audience.
- 54:33So we can leave that in the clip
- 54:42now.
- 54:42It's gonna get out on Discord and TikTok.
- 54:46What are you looking at over there?
- 54:47Somebody there, Ryan, you getting held up at gunpoint?
- 54:50Ryan : No, no, I just, it's like I hear like the water dripping
- 54:55out by the sunroom, so I'm like, what the hell's going on out here?
- 54:58It sounds like someone's like jumping on the deck I'm just like, what
- 55:02the hell is going on out there?
- 55:05Kearns: Huh?
- 55:06All right, well he's dead.
- 55:07Uh,
- 55:13yeah, there it is.
- 55:15Ryan : no, no, Helen,
- 55:17Kearns: so that's it.
- 55:18That's 28 days later.
- 55:19Uh, really don't have too much more to go into on it.
- 55:22I think we touched on everything and it's an hour in, so we're
- 55:26gonna get into the top fives.
- 55:27It is
- 55:28Ryan : a great, it is a great movie and if you wanna watch it, um, it's
- 55:32hard to come by, uh, physical unless you wanna spend an arm and a lake.
- 55:36So the best way to watch it is on Amazon.
- 55:39Um, I think renting it is like 3 99 to buy it.
- 55:42It's like $12 for standard, $15 for hd.
- 55:46So,
- 55:47Kearns: marketing.
- 55:48They're gonna have it, they're gonna have it free streaming soon.
- 55:50They have to.
- 55:51Right.
- 55:52Ryan : December
- 55:53Kearns: be out.
- 55:54Ryan : is rumor.
- 56:09Kearns: Hmm.
- 56:09Weird.
- 56:25Yeah.
- 56:25Yeah.
- 56:25Ryan : Yeah, it does.
- 56:27I also think it's because of the camera work.
- 56:29They used a smaller camera for the quick movements, and so like, they can be quick
- 56:34because I mean, a lot of the locations they filmed at, was either in the morning,
- 56:39early in the morning, Dawn, or they had to be quick and did a lot of like,
- 56:43independent of course style filmmaking, which again, it's a very independent
- 56:48film, even though with a great cast.
- 56:50Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 56:51All right guys.
- 56:52Ryan : with the, with the top fives, I'm gonna say
- 56:55Kearns: Thank you.
- 56:55I'm fading fast.
- 56:58Ryan : I haven't, I haven't watched two of them, but they are on my list to watch.
- 57:02Um, but I have watched the three, so I'm gonna start with the two.
- 57:05I haven't watched, they're on my list.
- 57:07I'm gonna start off.
- 57:08Um, and it's also about viruses.
- 57:10I'm sorry.
- 57:11These are all films related with viruses and number five,
- 57:15George Romero's the Crazies.
- 57:18It's been on my
- 57:18Kearns: Nice.
- 57:19Ryan : seen the, I've seen the remake, but the thing is, is the original
- 57:23one I've heard so much great, so many great things about it, and it's really,
- 57:28that started with George Romero.
- 57:30George Romero's directing, you know, it's a classic and there's more of
- 57:34a, there's more of a message in it.
- 57:37It's very like, night of the Living Dead don't have the dead day of the dead.
- 57:39There's more of a message to it.
- 57:41Kearns: Great nuke scene too.
- 57:43Great.
- 57:51Mm-hmm.
- 57:57Ryan : Do you think it's like a prequel?
- 57:59I haven't seen it, but like maybe, like considered
- 58:06Kearns: Yeah, we would've known the,
- 58:10Ryan : Okay.
- 58:11Kearns: at the end of the, one of the best,
- 58:17Ryan : Okay.
- 58:18All right.
- 58:18Well that starts off with number five.
- 58:20Number four.
- 58:21I, I, I, believe you guys have seen, uh, seen this, um, 2006
- 58:26Children of Men starring one of my favorite actors, Clive Owen.
- 58:31Kearns: can't have kids,
- 58:32Ryan : whole, yeah,
- 58:34Kearns: she having
- 58:35Ryan : the
- 58:35Kearns: a, let's kill her.
- 58:39Ryan : I, the, the scenes I've seen, um, whether they're like
- 58:42traveling and it's very warfare.
- 58:45It's always caught my eye, but I've always seen it from the middle.
- 58:48And that's another, uh, film that's like car to come by nowadays.
- 58:52like a hidden
- 58:52Kearns: Wasn't that good.
- 58:54Yeah, it wasn't that good.
- 58:55Uh, it was good, but it wasn't that good and it wasn't very, they didn't
- 58:59make a lot of 'em 'cause of that.
- 59:02It was a very niche audience, you know, like the age range of people interested.
- 59:06I was in my twenties, I think, when that came out.
- 59:08And I remember it was hard for me to soldier through it 'cause
- 59:12it really wasn't made for me.
- 59:15Ryan : I, I think they were attracting like the whole, like
- 59:18Clive Owen, like good actor.
- 59:20He was in Sin City.
- 59:21He played Dwight.
- 59:22So like, he had like,
- 59:24Kearns: Was that before
- 59:25Ryan : rise.
- 59:25Kearns: after though?
- 59:26That was before.
- 59:27Ryan : was, this was uh, after Sin City.
- 59:29Kearns: After.
- 59:30Okay.
- 59:30Ryan : So like, he got his, like, he had his part in city.
- 59:34He was Dwight.
- 59:35He got like that big part.
- 59:36And then, uh, sadly, uh, drinking led to his downfall.
- 59:41But I know he is making a comeback recently.
- 59:44Kearns: himself out of acting.
- 59:46Ryan : yeah,
- 59:47Kearns: Well, that's fine.
- 59:48Ryan : drinker.
- 59:49Kearns: I had enough of him,
- 59:50Ryan : Re
- 59:51Kearns: gonna lie.
- 59:51He was the, he was the broke ass.
- 59:53George Clooney.
- 59:54We didn't need, I'll say it.
- 59:56Ryan : you
- 59:57Kearns: Fuck you, Clive.
- 59:58Move on.
- 59:58Movie number three.
- 1:00:00Shoot him up.
- 1:00:00Sucks.
- 1:00:01Ryan : them up.
- 1:00:01Kearns: Movie number three.
- 1:00:07Well, Gerard Butler is, I mean, yeah, pretty much.
- 1:00:13I think that Gerard Butler probably took Clive O's future roles.
- 1:00:20Number three.
- 1:00:22Ryan : number three?
- 1:00:22Uh,
- 1:00:23Kearns: Yes.
- 1:00:23Ryan : I have to, we mentioned it earlier.
- 1:00:25Um, I am legend
- 1:00:27Kearns: Nice.
- 1:00:27Nice.
- 1:00:29Ryan : Uh, not my favorite.
- 1:00:30My, my favorite version is the Omega Man.
- 1:00:34But with the concept of viruses, um, will Smith's version really
- 1:00:38does the concept very well, I feel.
- 1:00:41But I just, with, yeah, I I love the last man on earth, but I, I
- 1:00:50just, Neville, it's just like the.
- 1:00:54Like I, I know it's not the story exactly 'cause creatures are
- 1:00:59talking and they're basically human.
- 1:01:01But that's what, I don't know.
- 1:01:02I like that campiness and just Charlton Hasin.
- 1:01:06I, I like Charlton Hasin.
- 1:01:12Oh, of course.
- 1:01:15I, it's, they're all different in each way, in their own way.
- 1:01:18Um, I am legend is just more apparent with the creatures.
- 1:01:23Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:01:23Ryan : when I, um, last man on earth, it's a great film, but
- 1:01:27like, it's more Vincent Price, it's
- 1:01:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:01:30Ryan : his acting coming out.
- 1:01:32And just like him, I remember him boarding up the windows, him driving
- 1:01:36and like he's hunting the buildings.
- 1:01:38It is more of his, like, his piece to grow as an actor, I feel or grow
- 1:01:41further to show his acting abilities.
- 1:01:43Uh, while like with the Charlton Heston one, it's like sci-fi
- 1:01:47horror action all rolled in one.
- 1:01:49And I think that was like right after playing the Apes.
- 1:01:52Kearns: Might have been what movie number two?
- 1:01:57Ryan : Number
- 1:02:00damn.
- 1:02:02Number two.
- 1:02:03All right.
- 1:02:04You're gonna like this, you'll pop for this
- 1:02:07Kearns: Doubtful.
- 1:02:08Ryan : two, 2000, damn 2011 contagion.
- 1:02:12And I'm gonna tell you why it's number two.
- 1:02:14It's number two, because Gwyneth Paltrow dies in the beginning of the film.
- 1:02:19Kearns: They cut off her fucking head.
- 1:02:20What's number one?
- 1:02:29Ryan : No, it elevates it from two.
- 1:02:31Um,
- 1:02:32Kearns: Two.
- 1:02:32Yeah.
- 1:02:33They don't actually cut off her head.
- 1:02:34I lied by the way.
- 1:02:36Ryan : no, they, well, they do in another movie,
- 1:02:38Kearns: No, no, no, no, no clarifying questions.
- 1:02:40John, what's number one?
- 1:02:44Ryan : uh, number one, that's a
- 1:02:46Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:02:47Ryan : in contagion too, by the way.
- 1:02:49Number
- 1:02:49Kearns: he is, he is.
- 1:02:51I'm sorry.
- 1:02:51Did he write like detailed notes?
- 1:02:53Jude Law is a, a charlatan that deserves to be shot.
- 1:02:56All right.
- 1:02:56The end in the movie, not in real life.
- 1:02:59He's, he's a great sniper that saved Russia from the Nazis, but
- 1:03:05Ryan : Well,
- 1:03:05Kearns: tired and I want the top five to be over.
- 1:03:07So
- 1:03:09Ryan : alright, I'll jump to number one.
- 1:03:11It's, um, 1995 starring Bruce Willis, starring Brad Pitt.
- 1:03:17It's a, uh, remake of a French film, which
- 1:03:20Kearns: really, really good choice, dude.
- 1:03:22Ryan : LA Tea, uh, 12 Monkeys.
- 1:03:25And
- 1:03:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:03:26Ryan : never seen LA Tea, I recommend it.
- 1:03:29It's a little over an hour and the whole movie's still photos and it's
- 1:03:34all still images with the narration and music in the background.
- 1:03:37But Monkeys, it's just Brad Pitt as a nut and just the story.
- 1:03:42They do a good remake of it.
- 1:03:44And just Bruce Willis Kills and the, and the ending, watch the movie, but.
- 1:03:50Listen as much as we're talking about my top five.
- 1:03:54John, we gotta hear yours.
- 1:03:56Kearns: Thank you so much.
- 1:03:57Ryan : get
- 1:03:57Kearns: you so much for that.
- 1:03:58I was gonna say a couple things and I kept my mouth shut.
- 1:04:09Ryan : Okay, Congo,
- 1:04:15Kearns: Oh,
- 1:04:18okay.
- 1:04:30Ryan : that's
- 1:04:36that.
- 1:04:37Everyone should see that movie.
- 1:04:45Kearns: Oh, you, you nailed it.
- 1:04:47Congo was the first guest, man.
- 1:04:49The worst costuming of any film ever.
- 1:04:52But damn, was it a good book?
- 1:04:59Fair
- 1:05:11Space Juice stuff.
- 1:05:21Mm,
- 1:05:25Ryan : I was gonna say, Tim Curry's still alive.
- 1:05:27Kearns: he's the chief monkey.
- 1:05:31He's just chewing on Gwyneth Paltrow's head throughout the whole film.
- 1:05:34Ryan : He's a Disney princess too.
- 1:05:41Yeah.
- 1:05:41Bruce Campbell's in it.
- 1:05:42Kearns: really?
- 1:05:44Cool.
- 1:05:46All right, great ma, great movie Mansion, Congo.
- 1:05:56Ryan : What the hell?
- 1:06:17Kearns: It's one bad.
- 1:06:20Ah, that sounds like 28 days later.
- 1:06:22Good job.
- 1:06:28Nice dude.
- 1:06:31All right,
- 1:06:31Ryan : rowdy McDowell.
- 1:06:44Okay.
- 1:06:46Okay.
- 1:06:50Kearns: cool.
- 1:06:51Ryan : Right.
- 1:06:52Kearns: How young?
- 1:07:03Ryan : Okay.
- 1:07:09Ooh.
- 1:07:13Kearns: sweet.
- 1:07:15Ryan : And a
- 1:07:16Kearns: That.
- 1:07:18And she's all right.
- 1:07:21Ryan : No leather jacket
- 1:07:28King.
- 1:07:31Kearns: Monkey shines.
- 1:07:32Ryan : Monkey shine.
- 1:07:33Kearns: This is before the movie.
- 1:07:34The Monkey comes out soon, by the way.
- 1:07:37But yeah.
- 1:07:39What's the monkey shine?
- 1:07:40John?
- 1:07:40What?
- 1:07:40The shine?
- 1:07:45Yeah.
- 1:07:55Ryan : It already sounds horrible.
- 1:08:08Once you say
- 1:08:09Kearns: Nice.
- 1:08:10Ryan : it's like it's awful.
- 1:08:12You know?
- 1:08:12You know it's gonna go downhill eventually.
- 1:08:14And see, I've seen monkey shines it.
- 1:08:16It does the obsession.
- 1:08:19obsession is there.
- 1:08:38Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 1:08:39Ryan : Okay.
- 1:08:39Kearns: the monkey scenes, I, I completely forgot about the chimpanzee
- 1:08:43killing everybody on the TV show.
- 1:08:45That's probably the best part of the movie too.
- 1:08:53Oh yeah.
- 1:08:54Just do an hour and a half.
- 1:09:01He does some damage.
- 1:09:02Uh, did you watch the, you watched the Ed GR post show on Netflix.
- 1:09:08Um, what was that?
- 1:09:09The Fall House followed the house of Usher.
- 1:09:10Right?
- 1:09:11Ryan : Call the House of Usher.
- 1:09:13Kearns: You haven't watched it really?
- 1:09:14There's a, if you want see some monkey on human uh, shenanigans.
- 1:09:18There's a great episode in that third episode.
- 1:09:22Ryan : three, I
- 1:09:23Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:09:24Ryan : I was gonna say, if they use that mauling scene that's what
- 1:09:28I was expecting in that episode.
- 1:09:29What they do in 28 days later.
- 1:09:32gruesome though, because John, I know you're not a Mike Flanagan fan, but he
- 1:09:37did a good job with this Edgar Allen Poe.
- 1:09:40I thought you were, and I'm sorry.
- 1:09:42Kearns: You really good
- 1:09:46lukewarm.
- 1:09:48There you go.
- 1:09:50You could.
- 1:09:51The problem with trying to convey what damage a chimp can do is
- 1:09:56that it's unimaginable damage.
- 1:09:59The chimp will rip your face off and feed it to you and like it'll,
- 1:10:04it'll then make a joke and place your face on your ass while you're
- 1:10:09on the ground writhing in pain.
- 1:10:10That's what a chimp will do.
- 1:10:12They, the things they do to each other when they're angry
- 1:10:15with each other is wild.
- 1:10:18Yeah.
- 1:10:18So you'll, I don't think you're ever gonna see a movie that shows like
- 1:10:22the true ability, what a chimp will do to someone that happened to a,
- 1:10:27a woman in Stanford, Connecticut.
- 1:10:29She was, that was Stanford, Connecticut,
- 1:10:39ripped her face off, literally ripped her face off.
- 1:10:41Do you ever see what she looks like?
- 1:10:44Yeah.
- 1:10:45That's tough.
- 1:10:46I. That's tough.
- 1:10:48I can imagine.
- 1:10:48Just this is my life now.
- 1:10:50I look like a child's drawing.
- 1:10:56Brutal.
- 1:10:56All right.
- 1:10:57Well guys, that was, um, that was the episode.
- 1:10:5928 days later, I have to go to sleep.
- 1:11:03It's been real.
- 1:11:04Ryan : Have a good one, guys.
