- 0:00Speaker 1: Red River Shootout, which is the only name that you
- 0:02Speaker 1: can call it.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:05Speaker 1: To me, that is what's politically correct, as is the
- 0:08Speaker 1: world's largest outdoor cocktail party, which we'll get to talk
- 0:10Speaker 1: about in a couple of weeks as well.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Which is indoors this year.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Indoors. It's like a lid on the drink, but the
- 0:17Speaker 1: dome will be fun. It should be on home campuses.
- 0:20Speaker 1: That's gross.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yes, it should.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Here we go with the Red River Shootout, presented by PrizePix.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Cole?
- 0:29Speaker 1: We went Big Ten heavy on our Sunday show, I believe.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We're going SEC heavy today, at least to start things.
- 0:36Speaker 1: A native Texan, somebody who's been to this game several times. Cole,
- 0:40Speaker 1: next year our goal needs to be to do this
- 0:42Speaker 1: game together. Yeah. That would be fun. Cole, start us off.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Listen, it's, in my opinion, one of the greatest rivalries
- 0:51Speaker 2: in all professional sports. I don't care if you want
- 0:53Speaker 2: to call college not professional sports. You're paying players is
- 0:56Speaker 2: professional at this point. It is a staple because for
- 0:59Speaker 2: 30 minutes, it is an away game. For 30 minutes,
- 1:02Speaker 2: it is a home game. It is absolutely everything that
- 1:05Speaker 2: you could ask for. Chart on in, in between a
- 1:08Speaker 2: state fair where literally you can go have the most
- 1:10Speaker 2: rancid food that you've ever experienced in your life and
- 1:12Speaker 2: pay a little bit of an overprice to go ride
- 1:14Speaker 2: a tilt-a-whirl that's going to make you hurl in between halftime.
- 1:18Speaker 2: So just a game that you got to go experience
- 1:20Speaker 2: for yourself. If you've never been to the Cotton Bowl,
- 1:21Speaker 2: please go ahead and make a trip down to Dallas.
- 1:24Speaker 2: As a Houstonian, it is the one nice thing I
- 1:26Speaker 2: will say about Dallas. So there you go. This is
- 1:28Speaker 2: an interesting matchup because the funny thing that a lot
- 1:31Speaker 2: of people haven't been paying attention to, Oklahoma has not
- 1:35Speaker 2: scored a touchdown in the last two trips that they
- 1:37Speaker 2: faced off against Texas, that these two have matched up
- 1:39Speaker 2: against each other. So is this the year with how
- 1:42Speaker 2: bad the offense looks, with how rancid of a passing
- 1:45Speaker 2: attack we have seen with John Mateer, and a bye
- 1:47Speaker 2: week to be able to make things work, that this
- 1:50Speaker 2: is where you will finally see a touchdown be scored
- 1:52Speaker 2: in favor of the offense. Maybe not, but maybe you
- 1:56Speaker 2: can get a touchdown based off of the defense. For Texas,
- 1:58Speaker 2: a lot of us are sitting here and saying that
- 2:00Speaker 2: while you have the best winning college football, you do
- 2:02Speaker 2: not look like the best team in the sports. You
- 2:05Speaker 2: want to hire able to guarantee that you still remain
- 2:07Speaker 2: in that number one spot in our eyes, not just
- 2:09Speaker 2: winning this game, but outright dominating on both sides of
- 2:11Speaker 2: the football. The offense wakes on up. You finally find
- 2:14Speaker 2: a rhythm in the passing attack with Arch Manning finding
- 2:17Speaker 2: receivers downfield and your defense looks as it did against
- 2:19Speaker 2: Tennessee for three and a half quarters all the way
- 2:22Speaker 2: up until literally the last minute where Mikey Matthews got
- 2:24Speaker 2: into the end zone. If you play that way, we're
- 2:26Speaker 2: all going to say that Texas still belongs in the
- 2:27Speaker 2: number one spot because if you beat a rival in
- 2:30Speaker 2: a game to where everything is unpredictable. And let me
- 2:32Speaker 2: make this abundantly clear. I do not want to hear
- 2:35Speaker 2: from people, yeah, well, Oklahoma looks like hot dog water. Guys,
- 2:38Speaker 2: this is the Red River shootout. Weird things happen in
- 2:42Speaker 2: this game. What decided this game a season ago? Let
- 2:45Speaker 2: me remind you, Ryan Niblick's punt return for a touchdown
- 2:48Speaker 2: was a key stat in this game of why someone won.
- 2:52Speaker 2: The big stat that I will tell you that I've
- 2:53Speaker 2: looked up In the last three times that these two
- 2:56Speaker 2: teams have played against each other, the winner of the
- 2:58Speaker 2: turnover battle has won this football game. So you got
- 3:01Speaker 2: to go back to 2023 when it was Dylan Gabriel
- 3:04Speaker 2: versus Quinn Ewers. The winner of the turnover battle was
- 3:08Speaker 2: the winner of this football game back and forth. So
- 3:10Speaker 2: even with Oklahoma, if you want to be able to
- 3:12Speaker 2: win this football game, you're probably going to have to
- 3:13Speaker 2: go force a couple of interceptions on Arch Manning. And
- 3:16Speaker 2: let's be real, Arch has been good up to this
- 3:18Speaker 2: point in the season. He's not been wowing. And I'm
- 3:20Speaker 2: not asking Arch at this point to wow me and
- 3:23Speaker 2: show on off. But I would like to see him
- 3:25Speaker 2: have a couple of big-time throws in a marquee matchup.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I would like to see him be able to finish
- 3:29Speaker 2: drives by punching it into the end zone instead of
- 3:32Speaker 2: settling for a field goal or turning to your running
- 3:34Speaker 2: backs or Leak Brown and Hollywood Smothers making the plays.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I would like to see the guy who was supposed
- 3:38Speaker 2: to be the reason why we've been elevated, the guy
- 3:41Speaker 2: that we saw at the end of last season, really
- 3:43Speaker 2: kind of after this game and moving forward, kind of
- 3:46Speaker 2: re-emerge in Dallas for one game where he gets to
- 3:49Speaker 2: be that enforcer. If you are Oklahoma, I think that
- 3:52Speaker 2: you're going to have to force some turnovers, like some
- 3:54Speaker 2: really big ones in short field position to be able
- 3:56Speaker 2: to set up field goals for Tate Sandell and hopefully
- 3:58Speaker 2: get something where John Mateer trusts his legs. Honestly, I
- 4:01Speaker 2: hope that the past week, Ben Arbuckle and the offense
- 4:04Speaker 2: kind of studied what wasn't working and said, here's what
- 4:08Speaker 2: we can do that does works and implement that. And
- 4:10Speaker 2: one thing that I think that both Tom and I
- 4:12Speaker 2: have said on multiple occasions works is Let's not throw
- 4:16Speaker 2: the football as much as humanly possible. Let's trust the
- 4:18Speaker 2: rushing attack of John Mateer because that's one way where
- 4:21Speaker 2: as long as he's not trying to hold the ball
- 4:23Speaker 2: out wide, a turnover won't happen. And maybe it'll be
- 4:27Speaker 2: a couple of three and outs, but at least that
- 4:28Speaker 2: can get going. What does the offensive line look like
- 4:31Speaker 2: for this team? Oklahoma is known for being an offensive
- 4:34Speaker 2: line factory. And ever since they made it over to
- 4:36Speaker 2: the SEC, Bill Beaton has been beaten down bad. And
- 4:39Speaker 2: let's be real right now. You got to wonder what
- 4:41Speaker 2: you got with Michael Fasusi coming on back in. Will
- 4:43Speaker 2: he be healthy for this game? Can you generate any
- 4:46Speaker 2: type of pass protection against a Colin Simmons in that
- 4:48Speaker 2: front seven? Because to be completely transparent, Oklahoma. Their offensive
- 4:53Speaker 2: line is probably at the same level as Tennessee's going
- 4:55Speaker 2: into this game. And we just watched as Colin Simmons
- 4:57Speaker 2: made himself known as not only a wrecking ball defensive player,
- 5:02Speaker 2: but also a future groundskeeper at Neyland Stadium by watering
- 5:04Speaker 2: the garden. He made himself felt that this was going
- 5:07Speaker 2: to be a game to where he could terrorize you.
- 5:09Speaker 2: So is that going to be the case against John Mateer?
- 5:11Speaker 2: I want to see from Oklahoma as well the ability
- 5:15Speaker 2: to win with the play-action pass. There have been explosive
- 5:18Speaker 2: gone up against Texas in the past. Whether that be
- 5:20Speaker 2: the Jeremiah Smith performance. Whether that be Mikey Matthews or
- 5:23Speaker 2: Braylon Staley two weeks ago in Knoxville. I would like
- 5:26Speaker 2: them to see the ability for one or two explosive
- 5:29Speaker 2: plays to Isaiah Satanga. And not just hearing the Oklahoma
- 5:32Speaker 2: fans screaming at the top of their lungs. He's down
- 5:34Speaker 2: there somewhere. Like actually just one or two throws. gain
- 5:39Speaker 2: a 25, gain a 30 yards, and then dink and
- 5:41Speaker 2: dunk your way to success. Rocky Beers is a good
- 5:44Speaker 2: tight end. Rocky Beers may be the best tight end
- 5:46Speaker 2: in the SEC. Find him as much as humanly possible
- 5:49Speaker 2: and hit him in the damn chest without trying to
- 5:51Speaker 2: lead him down the field. Let me make this abundantly clear.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Positive yards where you're stopped initially after the play is
- 5:59Speaker 2: a good thing because of its positive yards. I don't
- 6:02Speaker 2: need to see Rocky Beers gain 9 or 10 after
- 6:05Speaker 2: the catch. If he gains 7 on the catch, that's
- 6:07Speaker 2: a gain of 7, not a negative loss of yards.
- 6:10Speaker 2: So can you continuously find and dink and dunk your
- 6:12Speaker 2: way to success to keep Texas defense humble in this matchup?
- 6:16Speaker 2: For Texas offense, can you get your offensive line to
- 6:20Speaker 2: create rushing opportunities for both Relique Brown and Hollywood Smothers?
- 6:23Speaker 2: Smothers is going to be back for this game. He'll
- 6:25Speaker 2: be fully healthy, so I don't worry about his role.
- 6:27Speaker 2: But I do wonder about when you look back at
- 6:29Speaker 2: that game against Tennessee, they really weren't able to run
- 6:32Speaker 2: the football efficiently. They had a couple of big breakaway
- 6:34Speaker 2: runs and I mean a couple of big, big runs,
- 6:36Speaker 2: but like for the most part, the success came from
- 6:39Speaker 2: inside the red zone with the league Brown having two
- 6:41Speaker 2: or three yards to gain. Can you have the opportunity
- 6:44Speaker 2: to create an option? For the play action pass to grow.
- 6:47Speaker 2: To when you can target a Bishop downfield. A Cam Coleman.
- 6:50Speaker 2: A Ryan Wingo. An Emmitt Mosley. Can one of those
- 6:52Speaker 2: things happen? Can you tire out that defensive front? And
- 6:55Speaker 2: can both of you force turnovers? And can both of
- 6:57Speaker 2: you win with special teams? It's Red River. Weird things happen.
- 7:01Speaker 2: This game is known for having a couple of hiccups
- 7:03Speaker 2: along the way. To where things set up wrong. So
- 7:06Speaker 2: can your special teams. Either side. Give your team short
- 7:09Speaker 2: field positions. Maybe it's a kickoff return. Maybe it's a
- 7:11Speaker 2: punt return. Maybe it's a muffs punt. Maybe it is
- 7:14Speaker 2: a blocked field goal that allows you to have short
- 7:17Speaker 2: field position. Can those things work in your favor to
- 7:20Speaker 2: give both these offenses, one of which is non-existent and
- 7:23Speaker 2: one of which that has been lacking, an opportunity to
- 7:25Speaker 2: be able to work for a chance to put up points?
- 7:28Speaker 2: The last thing I'm looking forward to is the chess
- 7:30Speaker 2: match between Steve Sarkeesian, who is supposed to be an
- 7:33Speaker 2: offensive guru, against Brett Benneballs, a defensive wizard. These are
- 7:37Speaker 2: the type of games that you're supposed to throw it
- 7:39Speaker 2: all out there, leave no stone unturned, and kind of
- 7:43Speaker 2: flex your muscles on what works. You have a defensive-minded
- 7:46Speaker 2: staff going up against an offensive juggernaut that's supposed to
- 7:49Speaker 2: be on paper, headlined by Steve Sarkeesian. Which one blinks first?
- 7:52Speaker 2: The loser of that battle, I think, is going to
- 7:54Speaker 2: be the loser of this game.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I'll get right back to this clip of the Power
- 7:57Speaker 1: 2 here on College Football Addiction. But first, I want
- 8:00Speaker 1: to give some love to our friends over at PrizePix.
- 8:03Speaker 1: This weekend, game of the year. Alabama-Georgia vibes are high
- 8:08Speaker 1: in Tuscaloosa and in Athens. The game will happen in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And we are taking Keelan Russell's passing touchdowns more than 1.5.
- 8:17Speaker 1: We're also taking Gunnar Stockton's passing total more than 209.5.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I feel really good about those. You can go check
- 8:24Speaker 1: out the full episode of The Power 2 to get
- 8:27Speaker 1: everybody's picks for this weekend's Game of the Week. Maybe
- 8:32Speaker 1: Game of the Year. Again, use the PrizePix app. Code
- 8:34Speaker 1: is HMA. Play $ 5. Get $ 150 in lineups instantly if
- 8:38Speaker 1: you win on the PrizePix app. Now back to the clip.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I think what is really interesting about this and what
- 8:45Speaker 1: would not surprise me at all is if Oklahoma could...
- 8:53Speaker 1: I mean, you mentioned the turnovers that they need to get. Cole,
- 8:56Speaker 1: I think it's just as important the turnovers they need
- 8:58Speaker 1: to avoid.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:00Speaker 1: They gave Georgia 14 points in the first half off
- 9:04Speaker 1: of turnovers directly. They had three possessions in a row.
- 9:09Speaker 1: And even the one drive, you know, that was short,
- 9:11Speaker 1: but Georgia only had to go 54 yards on the
- 9:14Speaker 1: other drive they scored, which I'm giving their offense more
- 9:17Speaker 1: credit for. So if I was going to ask you,
- 9:20Speaker 1: is it more important to force turnovers or to avoid them?
- 9:24Speaker 1: I almost think the answer is both. But I almost
- 9:27Speaker 1: think the answer is you've got to avoid them in
- 9:29Speaker 1: this game. Because that is guaranteed points for Texas. I
- 9:32Speaker 1: could see a scenario where Oklahoma's defense plays well and
- 9:37Speaker 1: gets you into the second half because Texas' offense is
- 9:41Speaker 1: clunky without forcing turnovers. I could see Oklahoma's defense just
- 9:46Speaker 1: playing solidly. But the thing that scares me to death
- 9:49Speaker 1: if I'm Oklahoma is the fact that they don't take
- 9:51Speaker 1: care of the ball either. Can I count it? You
- 9:54Speaker 1: can't give them short fields. Oh, yeah, I'm good with
- 9:56Speaker 1: the counter, but that would be my argument for that side.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Oklahoma's best offense is its defense. Right now, I trust
- 10:03Speaker 2: that they would have a better opportunity of scoring with
- 10:05Speaker 2: a scoop and score by David Stone or Taylor Wine
- 10:08Speaker 2: coming off the edge or a Bowen interception taking back
- 10:11Speaker 2: the house than I trust John Matera.
- 10:13Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that you've got to avoid that.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I'm just saying that that's the best offense for you
- 10:17Speaker 2: right now.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I agree with that. My counter to your counter, maybe
- 10:21Speaker 1: Tom can settle our debate here. My counter to your
- 10:24Speaker 1: counter is that I could see, I don't think it's
- 10:27Speaker 1: super likely. I could see this being a 10 to
- 10:31Speaker 1: three game in the fourth quarter.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Oh, I expected it to be.
- 10:35Speaker 1: But whether there's been a turnover or not, if there
- 10:40Speaker 1: are turnovers for Oklahoma, this will be a 20 to
- 10:42Speaker 1: three game in the fourth quarter. It's happened in the past. So,
- 10:47Speaker 1: that's where I think, I don't know, man. Even if
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's boring, like, you need this game to be boring
- 10:51Speaker 1: if you're Oklahoma. You don't want points in this thing,
- 10:53Speaker 1: because you know you're not scoring. I mean, if we're
- 10:55Speaker 1: just being honest with ourselves, Oklahoma's not scoring in this game. Like,
- 10:59Speaker 1: you know, I'm not saying get shut out, but, like,
- 11:01Speaker 1: they're not scoring consistently. You just, you gotta do everything
- 11:04Speaker 1: you can to keep Texas from scoring.
- 11:05Speaker 3: And.
- 11:07Speaker 4: The over-under in this game is 39.5.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Which is too high.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Vegas agrees with you. This is essentially Michigan versus.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Iowa in the SEC. That's what this is going to
- 11:19Speaker 4: feel like.
- 11:20Speaker 3: But if I'm Oklahoma and Texas, they both have had
- 11:23Speaker 3: the benefit of a week off, right? Oklahoma's had to
- 11:26Speaker 3: get together offensively and figure out how the hell can
- 11:28Speaker 3: we score points with a quarterback who is inaccurate, does
- 11:31Speaker 3: not read defenses very well, but he's a hell.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Of an athlete and he can run the football. Ironically.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Do you duplicate what Michigan has been doing with Bryce
- 11:39Speaker 3: Underwood and not putting the ball in his hands to
- 11:42Speaker 3: throw nearly as often, but try and get 10 hats
- 11:45Speaker 3: on 11 in the running game and you run the
- 11:47Speaker 3: hell out of John Mateer against this Texas defensive line?
- 11:51Speaker 4: Will they have enough success to the point that they
- 11:53Speaker 4: can topple Texas? I don't think so.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I think Texas's defense has looked much sharper this season.
- 11:59Speaker 3: And granted, David Stone was missing recently for Oklahoma. I'm
- 12:02Speaker 3: not sure what his status is going to be for
- 12:04Speaker 3: this game.
- 12:04Speaker 2: He played in the game against Georgia, so he's back.
- 12:07Speaker 4: There you go.
- 12:08Speaker 3: But you have Texas with better ability to score the football,
- 12:13Speaker 3: but I'm also looking at Arch Manning. I'm like, can
- 12:16Speaker 3: you play a clean game? Can you play a clean
- 12:18Speaker 3: game as a passer? And Oklahoma is going to test you.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Brent Venables is going to throw a lot of stuff
- 12:23Speaker 3: at you that you're not prepared for. Is he still
- 12:26Speaker 3: in that mode of one read and then look down
- 12:28Speaker 3: to take off? That's been an issue all season long.
- 12:30Speaker 3: It's been an issue throughout his career. So I think
- 12:33Speaker 3: I'm going to take Texas by a score of like
- 12:35Speaker 3: 17 to 14 in this one. I think it's going
- 12:39Speaker 3: to be a knuckle dragging rock fight. But like this
- 12:43Speaker 3: could go either way, guys. That's the Red River shootout
- 12:46Speaker 3: for you. It could go either way.
- 12:48Speaker 1: What's the meme? What is the animal where the is
- 12:52Speaker 1: it like a seal or something behind like the mom
- 12:54Speaker 1: and daughter taking the picture and he's just like lurking
- 12:56Speaker 1: by it? I don't know if I'm describing it well
- 12:58Speaker 1: or not.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I know there's one where there's a seal that's literally
- 13:01Speaker 2: wading in the water, and then it grabs the girl
- 13:03Speaker 2: and pulls her down.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Oh, no, that's not what I'm talking about. There's a seal,
- 13:08Speaker 1: and it's a mom and daughter that are taking a picture,
- 13:09Speaker 1: and the seal's just right behind them. That is Oklahoma's offense,
- 13:13Speaker 1: which has not been very good. I'm sorry, that is
- 13:15Speaker 1: Texas' offense, which has not been very good. Or clunky
- 13:19Speaker 1: is maybe the best way to say it. for a
- 13:20Speaker 1: large portion of the season, just waiting on that Oklahoma
- 13:23Speaker 1: turnover to, to happen here. So, um, Tom gave his prediction.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I think it's, I think the dam breaks at some point.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I know that conventional wisdom in this game would be
- 13:37Speaker 1: to think that it doesn't go crazy. I think Texas
- 13:40Speaker 1: wins this really comfortably. I'll go 20. I'll be somewhat respectful.
- 13:46Speaker 1: 24 to 10. I think Oklahoma, uh, Does hold Texas'
- 13:52Speaker 1: offense down some, but Texas gets at least seven points
- 13:55Speaker 1: off of turnovers. Shocker, Oklahoma scores an offensive touchdown in
- 14:00Speaker 1: this game. 24-10, Texas wins. The dam eventually breaks.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I think that you are going to get both an
- 14:08Speaker 2: offensive and defensive touchdown by Oklahoma in this game. I do.
- 14:13Speaker 2: But I'm not going to be the one to bet it.
- 14:14Speaker 2: So personally, I'm going to go back and forth. I've
- 14:17Speaker 2: gone back and forth with this. I think that it
- 14:18Speaker 2: is a very, very slow burn up until the fourth quarter.
- 14:22Speaker 2: And much like we saw with the Ryan Niblett touchdown,
- 14:23Speaker 2: you're going to get a breakaway run from Hollywood Smothers
- 14:25Speaker 2: that will decide this game. I'm going to go 27-13.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I think that you will get a touchdown early on
- 14:33Speaker 2: from Oklahoma. You're going to match touchdown. It'll be something
- 14:36Speaker 2: like 10-7 going into the fourth quarter. And then you
- 14:39Speaker 2: just watch as Texas finds a way to roll. They're
- 14:41Speaker 2: going to remain undefeated. They're going to remain having questions
- 14:45Speaker 2: of a match of what their offense can be. But
- 14:47Speaker 2: to be completely honest, it's the Red River shootout. The
- 14:50Speaker 2: fact that you win this game, you get to keep
- 14:51Speaker 2: the Golden Cowboy hat is the ultimate prize that I
- 14:53Speaker 2: think everybody just wants. Get out of this unscathed and
- 14:55Speaker 2: make sure that everyone stays healthy. If you do that,
- 14:57Speaker 2: I think that you're in a good spot.
