- 0:52OK, so I want to do a video on autism and executive function
- 0:54skills because there are a bunch of executive function skills
- 0:57that are kind of they're so difficult to deal with and I
- 1:01feel like we can never have more than enough tips to help with
- 1:04executive function. So I decided to make this video
- 1:07all about executive function and list out five skills that will
- 1:10help you in your daily life tasks and executive function
- 1:13tasks. Because that's how awesome I'm
- 1:16feeling today. No guys, seriously.
- 1:18I just wanted to ask because you guys are amazing and I want to
- 1:20help you in any way I can. If you have anything to add and
- 1:23you want to have a discussion with me, pop it in a comment
- 1:25down below because I read every single comment.
- 1:28Or you can just send me a tweet on Twitter.
- 1:29I also read every tweet and reply to every tweet as well.
- 1:31So guys, let's get started. So here's some simple but
- 1:36effective strategies to stay organized using these tips and
- 1:40strategies. If you're dealing with executive
- 1:42function issues, like I know a lot of people do, so list making
- 1:46lists on everything, like A to do list is the best way to keep
- 1:49on top of tasks that you have to do.
- 1:51So make sure that you put everything on a list as soon as
- 1:53you know about it, so you don't forget to write it on a list
- 1:56later. So what I'm trying to say is
- 1:57that if you've got a phone, everyone has a smartphone,
- 1:59right? So you pick up your smartphone,
- 2:00somebody says, Dan, remember, you need to do this.
- 2:02And you go, OK, so you open up your notes pad on your phone or
- 2:05whatever, and then you type in the thing you need to do,
- 2:06remember? Or you get, you know, if you if
- 2:10you carry a pad and a notepad round, then you get your scribe
- 2:12and you write that down. Look, I know it sounds weird and
- 2:15daunting, but having a list of things to do or noting down
- 2:18everything that somebody tells you where you need to action
- 2:20will actually save you a bunch of time.
- 2:22Because a lot of the time I'm sitting wrecking my head
- 2:25thinking, Oh my goodness, I need to remember to do something and
- 2:28I can't remember what on earth I'm supposed to be doing.
- 2:30So executive function kicks my butt when I don't write things
- 2:33down. True story.
- 2:35OK, so #2 is the calendar. Now use a visual calendar on
- 2:39your wall in your house or on your tablet or smartphone to
- 2:42remind you of things. So when you get like dates that
- 2:45you need to remember, write them down straight away in a
- 2:47calendar. I always use my iPhone because
- 2:49then it goes to my laptop and it goes to my iPad and everything
- 2:51and my watch and stuff, which is great.
- 2:53But Naomi, my partner, she's not really into like digital tech
- 2:55calendars. So she says to me, hey, whatever
- 2:58stuff you've got on the calendar, we have to put it onto
- 3:00a visual one on the wall in the kitchen so that we can look at
- 3:03it and know what we're doing. By looking at it, it gives you a
- 3:06more visual representation. And by having visual
- 3:08representation for autism, this is such the best way to remember
- 3:12events. Honestly, without having
- 3:14calendars and stuff down to remind me of things, I wouldn't
- 3:16even, I wouldn't even be able to get up and do anything because
- 3:18my entire day is listed down in calendar events, honestly.
- 3:21Like it. It really is.
- 3:22OK, so #3 is Reminders. Now this is probably my favorite
- 3:26function on digital tech. OK, so I use my Alexa assistant
- 3:31app and I also use my Siri digital assistant.
- 3:33And I also have another Google Home assistant things.
- 3:36And I use all of those to remind me to put things on my calendar
- 3:40into my reminders list. Like if I have to phone the
- 3:42doctor or the dentist, I get them to remind me to phone the
- 3:45doctor or the dentist, which is absolutely fantastic and it
- 3:47works so well and I just think that it's probably one of the
- 3:51most underused tools without a doubt.
- 3:53But then if you do use it, you just get so much out of it.
- 3:56So definitely check it out. I use the Siri Reminders app and
- 4:00I also use the Alexa one. You can actually sync them
- 4:01together so they put stuff into your calendars or into your
- 4:03notes or whatever you want to do, which is just like, oh
- 4:08amazing, love it. I just love the fact that stuff
- 4:10is just so compatible. And I actually can use your
- 4:12watch as well. I think you can speak to your
- 4:14Apple Watch, your Android watch, and then have like the the
- 4:16assistant, like the Google Assistant or the Siri Assistant,
- 4:18kind of put that stuff onto your your reminders.
- 4:22Okay. So #4 is a place for everything.
- 4:26So when you're at home, make sure you have a place for
- 4:29everything. So when you're using stuff, put
- 4:31it back in its place. This is the easiest way to stay
- 4:34organized, stay on top of things, and declutter when
- 4:36things are getting too stressful.
- 4:38Now a clean home is a happy home, like a clean office is a
- 4:41happy office. But a lot of the time we use
- 4:43things and we just leave them and leave them out and then they
- 4:45start stacking everywhere. Like my desk is just an absolute
- 4:47mess right now, but you know, I will clean it up and once I've
- 4:51cleaned it up it's going to be amazing.
- 4:52The thing with, you know, tidy and organization is that it has
- 4:57a sort of feeling. It has an effect on you.
- 4:59So mentally and you know mental health wise, if you don't have a
- 5:03clean and tidy surroundings, your brain is going to feel
- 5:07cluttered and not cleaned and not tidy, not organized.
- 5:10So the best way to do it is to literally look at all the things
- 5:14in your home and think okay there is a place for everything.
- 5:17So you tidy up once and then take a picture on your iPad or
- 5:20your iPhone or whatever of where the place where it goes.
- 5:23And then you'll remember every time to just look on that
- 5:25picture and go okay know the site goes there.
- 5:27And that is the best way to stay on top of it.
- 5:29I can't recommend it enough. Taking pictures of where things
- 5:32go is just awesome. Definitely do it.
- 5:35This is this is like super super tip okay.
- 5:37So #5 extremely important is a planner.
- 5:41Now I use a daily planners to run my entire life from running
- 5:44my business to running my personal life to running
- 5:46absolutely everything. Even my relaxation time is run
- 5:50on a on a personal planet. Now I use visual boards, you
- 5:53know, on a you know, you can use an app or you can use, I don't
- 5:58know, a piece of paper to write it down, but the best thing I
- 6:00would recommend is an app called Timo.
- 6:02Now Timo is a visual based planner for people with autism
- 6:06and ADHD and it was designed for these people specifically and
- 6:09they're amazing. I've worked with Timo a long,
- 6:12long time now and they're amazing and I love using that
- 6:14app. So please check out Timo.
- 6:16I'll leave a link in the description below.
- 6:17By the way, this is not sponsored.
- 6:18I just wanted to put that out with because I love them, I
- 6:20think they're a great company and I think this is a great app
- 6:22and the resource you should definitely use.
- 6:24So yeah, you can use my link down below.
- 6:26And yeah, definitely check out Timo.
