- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Jason Kandall. We're live at the iHeartRadio Music Lounge.
- 0:03Speaker 1: We're here in Hartford. That's what we like, crowd participation.
- 0:09Speaker 1: And we're going to get into the schedule a little
- 0:11Speaker 1: bit here, coach, but I want to touch on you
- 0:14Speaker 1: put something out either on the website or somewhere, kind
- 0:17Speaker 1: of a letter to the fans of Yukon football.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Let's get it rolling.
- 0:22Speaker 1: And I like the fact that you were talking about
- 0:25Speaker 1: bring a friend, bring your neighbors, bring your family, get
- 0:28Speaker 1: some people together to come to our home game against Lafayette.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We got seven of them this year, seven home games,
- 0:35Speaker 1: which is awesome, and we got some great opponents we're
- 0:37Speaker 1: going to talk about in a minute. But that, to me,
- 0:40Speaker 1: it's kind of grassroots a little bit. But I think
- 0:43Speaker 1: that's what football is. That's the beauty of it. The
- 0:47Speaker 1: fact that you can tailgate with your friends, spend a
- 0:49Speaker 1: few hours hanging out, and then go watch a football game.
- 0:53Speaker 3: I don't believe there's anything greater than a college football Saturday.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I just don't.
- 0:57Speaker 3: And I can't be convinced otherwise. You know, I've played
- 1:00Speaker 3: all the sports. I mean, you know, I just don't.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I can't the pageantry of what this sport commands and
- 1:07Speaker 3: what this looks like when done correctly, is a powerful thing.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And you know I mentioned playing a Mountain Union college.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I mean that that that institution had twelve hundred students,
- 1:17Speaker 3: they win their first national championship, and all of a sudden,
- 1:19Speaker 3: now there's twenty five hundred students eight years later. It's
- 1:21Speaker 3: not by accident, it's not by some admission speech. It's
- 1:24Speaker 3: not by a you know, passing out flyers at a table.
- 1:27Speaker 3: This is a this is everybody wants to build around
- 1:30Speaker 3: community and the only way to build around communities, in
- 1:33Speaker 3: my opinion, is to be really really good on the
- 1:35Speaker 3: athletic playing fields. And you know, and Yukon has had
- 1:39Speaker 3: such a strong history and so many different sports that man,
- 1:43Speaker 3: oh man, why we can't lose them momentum we've had
- 1:46Speaker 3: build up here in the last couple of years, and
- 1:47Speaker 3: you know, our staff and our players have a tremendous
- 1:49Speaker 3: task to keep that going. And you know, we feel
- 1:51Speaker 3: that pressure a little bit, but we want to make
- 1:53Speaker 3: sure that that we understand here too, that you know,
- 1:55Speaker 3: when you have a Clemson flag or you got to
- 1:57Speaker 3: Georgia flag or an Ohio state flag, in your neighborhood. Like,
- 2:00Speaker 3: I think it's your responsibility go tear that flag down
- 2:03Speaker 3: and put a Yukon flag. That's just how I see it,
- 2:05Speaker 3: all right, I like it.
- 2:06Speaker 2: That's good.
- 2:07Speaker 3: So but uh, and like I said, I just I
- 2:10Speaker 3: think that that's you know, this is an inside out thing.
- 2:13Speaker 3: This is not an outside end thing. This is this
- 2:15Speaker 3: has got to be done. You know, if you got
- 2:18Speaker 3: your degree from Yukon, you live here, you pay taxes
- 2:20Speaker 3: in the state, you better support the home team.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you. I'm with you.
- 2:23Speaker 1: A quick digression here for a moment during the commercial break.
- 2:27Speaker 1: It's a radio show, obviously, but coach was throwing some
- 2:30Speaker 1: footballs out to the crowd. And first of all, I
- 2:34Speaker 1: saw you throw football today in practice. You've got a
- 2:36Speaker 1: great gun. But what are you a baseball guy? Where
- 2:39Speaker 1: did that come from?
- 2:40Speaker 3: I would like to think I was a quarterback in
- 2:41Speaker 3: another life. There's this there's a there's a height element
- 2:44Speaker 3: to this thing that just maybe took me out of
- 2:46Speaker 3: that that position. But I mean, yeah, you always play
- 2:49Speaker 3: catch as a kid, whether it's baseball, football, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 3: you're always We grew up with a ball in our
- 2:53Speaker 3: hands at all times, right, any sport you get our
- 2:55Speaker 3: hands on, you'd go play. And man, it's just not
- 2:59Speaker 3: that way with some kids nowadays. I mean, I just
- 3:01Speaker 3: it's it's sad to see that. You know, you in Youngstown, Ohio,
- 3:05Speaker 3: the parks were full every Saturday. And you drive through
- 3:07Speaker 3: the Youngstown, Ohio right now, there's no rims on the hoops,
- 3:09Speaker 3: there's no the grass hasn't been cut in months. So
- 3:14Speaker 3: sad to see that part of it go. And you
- 3:15Speaker 3: want to make sure that you your own, your own
- 3:18Speaker 3: kids and your own family. You want to make sure
- 3:19Speaker 3: that they're ingrained in the community and part of you
- 3:22Speaker 3: sports because you know, there's so many lessons that no
- 3:24Speaker 3: matter what you play, no matter what you do, that
- 3:26Speaker 3: you know, these games teach you.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I say, my son was an athlete, played baseball
- 3:30Speaker 1: and other sports, and his what he learned in a
- 3:33Speaker 1: team format was phenomenal and he still has it today
- 3:37Speaker 1: in his job.
- 3:38Speaker 2: He still acts like a teammate.
- 3:40Speaker 1: That's something you can't buy that You got to just
- 3:43Speaker 1: get that and make it part of you.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I you know, you you can play the individual sports
- 3:49Speaker 3: and there's lessons to be taught and you know and
- 3:51Speaker 3: learned learned from those but uh yeah, I mean the
- 3:54Speaker 3: ultimate team game is football, and there's there's a there's
- 3:57Speaker 3: something still to be said for somebody that gets knocked
- 4:00Speaker 3: down and have to get back up because that's life
- 4:01Speaker 3: and that's gonna you know, that is your career. That
- 4:03Speaker 3: is what you do every day. That is that is coming.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Adversity's going to hit you right in the face. And
- 4:08Speaker 3: in football, you don't know when that's gonna come, and
- 4:10Speaker 3: ultimately you're gonna be, you know, defined by how you
- 4:13Speaker 3: respond to that. And this this game is a great
- 4:16Speaker 3: teacher of that because that is so true, because that's
- 4:17Speaker 3: what life is.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Jason Kandell, the UK football coach, with us.
- 4:21Speaker 1: We're live at the iHeart Music Lounge here in Hartford.
- 4:24Speaker 2: You're wipe, Nicole. You got three kids.
- 4:27Speaker 1: You got the big sister Avery, and you got Cameron
- 4:31Speaker 1: and then Colton. So how are they adapting? It's that's
- 4:34Speaker 1: a tough move. You got younger kids. You got to
- 4:36Speaker 1: go from what they've known all of a sudden to
- 4:39Speaker 1: a whole new environment.
- 4:40Speaker 2: How's that going?
- 4:41Speaker 3: They've been great. You know, we we got a great crew.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Cameron's eighth birthdays today, so he is uh you know,
- 4:49Speaker 3: uh eagerly anticipating Max Burger tonight, you know. So, yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 3: they've been full stride, you know, they you know, we
- 4:58Speaker 3: we kept them in school in Toledo through so a semester,
- 5:00Speaker 3: which school winds there a little bit earlier than you
- 5:03Speaker 3: know in this state. So they got here. There's a
- 5:06Speaker 3: couple of rough days when they went to the park
- 5:08Speaker 3: on the weekendre you know, during the week and the
- 5:09Speaker 3: other kids are in school. But other than that, eager
- 5:13Speaker 3: to be here, eager to get involved in the community
- 5:15Speaker 3: or to get going and you know fall football and
- 5:18Speaker 3: you know basketball and all the sports and all the
- 5:19Speaker 3: stuff and activities that they play. And yeah, looking forward
- 5:22Speaker 3: to you know, really just putting our feet down and
- 5:25Speaker 3: get settled in.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you're gonna you're gonna love it here, I'll tell you. Uh.
- 5:28Speaker 1: We talked today at practice about the schedule. You don't
- 5:31Speaker 1: get in college a preseason game or two like the
- 5:35Speaker 1: pros do. So how do you judge what's happening in
- 5:39Speaker 1: terms of the development of your squad as you go
- 5:43Speaker 1: through July and then August. Do you get a sense, oh,
- 5:46Speaker 1: I think we're ready to play a game or do
- 5:48Speaker 1: you have to get to that first game against Lapayette
- 5:51Speaker 1: and just see what happens.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think you try to put these
- 5:54Speaker 3: kids in as many pressure pack situations as you can,
- 5:58Speaker 3: and I think that was another that was a point
- 6:00Speaker 3: of emphasis to bring the spring game back and put
- 6:02Speaker 3: it in the stadium and have people there. You know,
- 6:04Speaker 3: whether that crowd was a thousand or a million, it
- 6:07Speaker 3: didn't matter to me. I mean, these kids had to
- 6:09Speaker 3: be out and play in front of some fans and
- 6:11Speaker 3: be in some situations, and most importantly the quarterback position
- 6:14Speaker 3: I think, you know, benefits from that. We had an
- 6:17Speaker 3: open practice this spring or this fall, which I've never
- 6:20Speaker 3: done before, which I think, you know, fits into that
- 6:22Speaker 3: category of you know, hey, we're at the stadium. There's
- 6:24Speaker 3: a little bit different environment here. You're not just up
- 6:26Speaker 3: on the practice field and you know, listening to music
- 6:29Speaker 3: and hearing whistles. You've got a lot of other things
- 6:30Speaker 3: going on that you could pay attention to. Sokay, try
- 6:33Speaker 3: to simulate that as much as you can, but you know,
- 6:35Speaker 3: there really isn't a substitute for you know, getting to
- 6:38Speaker 3: game day and feeling the you know, the anxiety to
- 6:40Speaker 3: get out there and play and the emotions of that
- 6:43Speaker 3: and you know, all the good things we talked about
- 6:45Speaker 3: of you know, supporting the team and being at the stadium.
- 6:48Speaker 3: That's all real for an eighteen to twenty two year
- 6:49Speaker 3: old person. So you know, we haven't been into in
- 6:52Speaker 3: a fight together yet, but we will be in a
- 6:55Speaker 3: couple of saturdays from here, so you know, we try
- 6:57Speaker 3: to get them as prepared as we can, you know,
- 6:59Speaker 3: and put in a position to try to test them
- 7:02Speaker 3: and stress them a little bit. But there's no substitute
- 7:04Speaker 3: for game day, all.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Right, Jason Kandel is with us. We'll be back in
- 7:07Speaker 2: just a moment.
- 7:08Speaker 1: More of the Yukon Football Coaches Show, schedules and who's
- 7:13Speaker 1: coming up in September.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Stay with us on the Yukon Sports Network.
