- 0:27Speaker 1: Pro Football Focus puts out their position rankings, and sometimes
- 0:32Speaker 1: it's positioned by player like quarterback, and then sometimes it's
- 0:35Speaker 1: positioned group like offensive line, which are the two things
- 0:38Speaker 1: that I kind of found this week were the most
- 0:40Speaker 1: interesting coming off the Saints' loss in Paris to Pittsburgh.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Tyler Shuck now with the inauspicious start for the New
- 0:50Speaker 1: Orleans Saints. at two and five through seven weeks. And
- 0:53Speaker 1: then this offensive line, which has been unable to protect
- 0:56Speaker 1: Shuck and unable to get any semblance of a running
- 0:58Speaker 1: game going. We'll start with Tyler Shuck, and I won't
- 1:01Speaker 1: bury the lead here. PFF ranks Tyler Shuck as the
- 1:05Speaker 1: 16th best quarterback in the NFL this week. And I
- 1:08Speaker 1: think it's important to note also that this isn't an
- 1:13Speaker 1: arbitrary or subjective ranking. This isn't Steve in Minnesota's quarterback
- 1:19Speaker 1: power rankings. This is PFF looking at the grades they
- 1:24Speaker 1: have for the season, and they adjust it week to
- 1:28Speaker 1: week based on the player's performance that week. So Shuck
- 1:31Speaker 1: had his worst performance of the season. His PFF grade
- 1:35Speaker 1: was a 56.2 in the loss to the Steelers. Had
- 1:40Speaker 1: no big-time throws in the previous two games, but he
- 1:42Speaker 1: had a pair of them against Pittsburgh. Also, they dinged
- 1:50Speaker 1: him with two turnover-worthy plays. That was the most he's
- 1:54Speaker 1: had in a game this season. Now remember, it's important
- 1:56Speaker 1: to note, PFF, when they look at turnover-worthy plays, it
- 1:59Speaker 1: doesn't necessarily mean you turn the ball over. It's, was
- 2:05Speaker 1: it a play that could have resulted in a turnover? If,
- 2:08Speaker 1: for example, Patrick Queen dropped the interception on the Saints'
- 2:13Speaker 1: first drive. That's a turnover-worthy play, even though Queen didn't
- 2:16Speaker 1: catch the ball. So you get dinged for that. I
- 2:19Speaker 1: look at Tyler Shuck, and I'm certainly not punting Tyler Shuck.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I think we all objectively can look at Tyler Shuck
- 2:34Speaker 1: and see the traits and the characteristics there that are exciting.
- 2:38Speaker 1: He's got the size. He's got the arm strength, all
- 2:42Speaker 1: the physical ability. I love the leadership. Again, the receivers
- 2:46Speaker 1: all together this offseason. The maturity of a guy that's 27,
- 2:51Speaker 1: married with a child. All of that reflects more of
- 2:57Speaker 1: a veteran player rather than a second-year player still on
- 3:01Speaker 1: his rookie deal. There's so much I like about Tyler Shuck.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I think there's also a very honest part of this
- 3:09Speaker 1: conversation where we have to look and say, eventually results
- 3:16Speaker 1: have to follow. You have to win games. And they're
- 3:23Speaker 1: not doing that. Not putting it solely on him, but
- 3:26Speaker 1: quarterbacks get too much of the credit, too much of
- 3:28Speaker 1: the blame. If you want a reason for optimism, if
- 3:34Speaker 1: you just work in reverse order, so they've got Tyler Shuck, 16.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Just look at who is just a few spots ahead
- 3:42Speaker 1: of him. 15 on the list, one spot ahead of
- 3:45Speaker 1: Sam Darnold. He won a Super Bowl last year. Jaden
- 3:48Speaker 1: Daniels at 14. As a rookie, he was in the
- 3:51Speaker 1: NFC Championship game. Matthew Stafford, the league MVP last year,
- 3:54Speaker 1: is 13. Trevor Lawrence, who's had an outstanding start to
- 3:57Speaker 1: this season, is 12. Jordan Love is 11th. You get
- 3:59Speaker 1: my point? He's not far off from being in that
- 4:06Speaker 1: conversation with great players in this league. But if you
- 4:10Speaker 1: look just behind him, it's Aaron Rodgers and Kyler Murray
- 4:12Speaker 1: and Jacoby Brissett and Geno Smith. So he's also not
- 4:14Speaker 1: far from being part of an irrelevant class of quarterback.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And I think what he does in the second half
- 4:20Speaker 1: of the season will determine how we feel, which side
- 4:25Speaker 1: of that line where he's teetering he may fall on. Now,
- 4:27Speaker 1: something that is an objective truth, and you don't need
- 4:30Speaker 1: me to have a PFF ranking to tell you this,
- 4:34Speaker 1: the offensive line grade or ranking for the New Orleans
- 4:37Speaker 1: Saints right now through Week 7 is 24th. There's 32
- 4:42Speaker 1: teams in the NFL. They've got the Saints offensive line
- 4:45Speaker 1: down three spots from a week ago. The write-up quickly.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It wasn't a good day for the Saints offensive line
- 4:51Speaker 1: in the loss of the Pittsburgh Steelers in Paris. It
- 4:53Speaker 1: showed that the group had a pair of backups in
- 4:55Speaker 1: the lineup. Left guard David Edwards and center Eric McCoy
- 4:58Speaker 1: didn't allow any pressures in the game, but the group
- 5:01Speaker 1: as a whole didn't have a single starter finish with
- 5:03Speaker 1: a PFF grade above 60. So, It continues to be
- 5:10Speaker 1: the biggest and most valid criticism of this team. You
- 5:17Speaker 1: have invested so much resource into that position group. Draft capital,
- 5:21Speaker 1: free agency, I don't need to run through it again,
- 5:23Speaker 1: you know it. And to be one of the worst
- 5:26Speaker 1: in the league is just inexcusable. And that's evaluation, that's development,
- 5:34Speaker 1: that's scheme, that's all of it. And in that instance
- 5:37Speaker 1: where we often talk about PFF, and I don't think
- 5:39Speaker 1: PFF is gospel. I think it's the way I say it,
- 5:42Speaker 1: it's a metric. It's not the metric. It's something to consider.
- 5:46Speaker 1: But in this instance, that something to consider matches the
- 5:49Speaker 1: eye test and the results you've seen on the field.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And I don't know how much better they can get. Look,
- 5:55Speaker 1: when you get Kelvin Banks back, you're going to be better.
- 5:59Speaker 1: You're better with Kelvin Banks at left tackle than us
- 6:02Speaker 1: and Richards. That's not breaking news. So it will make
- 6:05Speaker 1: you better. How much better? I don't have the answer
- 6:09Speaker 1: to that. My sincere hope is get healthy. Banks, Aitken,
- 6:15Speaker 1: Jordan Tyson, and see the rising tide rise all ships
- 6:19Speaker 1: there on the offensive side. Second half of the season
- 6:22Speaker 1: will be fascinating as you look forward to the future.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Because with Mrs. Benson making the comments she did a
- 6:28Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago at the quarterback club, and then
- 6:32Speaker 1: completely whiffing with the letter the open letter she wrote
- 6:36Speaker 1: to Saints fans, basically commending everyone on the trip to Paris.
- 6:41Speaker 1: When everyone thought an open letter from the owner on
- 6:44Speaker 1: the heels of the comments she made a couple of
- 6:45Speaker 1: weeks ago was going to be how unacceptable everything is,
- 6:49Speaker 1: instead it's a fluff piece about how great the crumpets
- 6:53Speaker 1: were in Paris. That would be London. The croissants were
- 6:56Speaker 1: in Paris. Or the French toast. Or the French fries.
- 7:00Speaker 2: The crepes.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Crepes. You have to say it like that. Crepes. Crepes.
- 7:05Speaker 1: The French bread.
- 7:06Speaker 2: So good.
- 7:08Speaker 1: All of it. A little cafe au lait, maybe? All
- 7:11Speaker 1: of it. I was trying to stick with the French words. Like,
- 7:16Speaker 1: leading with French. French bread, French toast, French fries. French
- 7:21Speaker 1: onion soup.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Love it.
- 7:23Speaker 1: French dip.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah. All of it. I'm in on a French dip, man.
- 7:26Speaker 1: It was all good. What was not good was the team.
- 7:30Speaker 1: But all that to say, how the rest of the
- 7:33Speaker 1: season goes, clearly... I think will determine if Mickey Loomis
- 7:38Speaker 1: and or Kellen Moore return. Now, for whatever it's worth,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Cam Newton, forgive me, Cam Jordan. Cam Newton did have
- 7:46Speaker 1: anything to say about this. He might have, at least
- 7:47Speaker 1: not publicly, that I saw. But Cam Jordan had this
- 7:49Speaker 1: to say about Ellen Moore.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Ellen Moore.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Cam, what's that coach like?
- 7:56Speaker 2: We've got to talk about Kellen Moore.
- 7:57Speaker 1: What's he like? Kellen is great, man.
- 7:58Speaker 2: He comes in, he's like, hey, this is going to
- 8:00Speaker 2: be our identity. He comes in at a cool, calm
- 8:02Speaker 2: manner at all times.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You know, like he's fired up in an energetic.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Way of talking to his guys, just, hey, this is
- 8:08Speaker 2: what we need to do. Now we just need to
- 8:09Speaker 2: establish a run.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I think the way Cam described Kellen Moore's personality is
- 8:22Speaker 1: something that a year ago, amid a 1-7 start, was
- 8:27Speaker 1: seen as a positive. It went very poorly at the
- 8:30Speaker 1: beginning of last year, but I think everyone anticipated it
- 8:32Speaker 1: going poorly, and the fact that he never wavered was
- 8:34Speaker 1: seen as positive. Remember, we actually, at Super Bowl Media
- 8:38Speaker 1: Row in February, sat down with DeMario Davis. This was
- 8:41Speaker 1: still in the offseason when he had not yet signed
- 8:43Speaker 1: with the Jets. And I asked him a similar question
- 8:47Speaker 1: about Kellen Moore. This is what DeMario Davis said in February.
- 8:49Speaker 2: It makes everybody want to come to work. He's such
- 8:52Speaker 2: a great leader. He's not a dictatorship. He really leans
- 8:56Speaker 2: on his staff. He doesn't change. He doesn't waver the
- 8:58Speaker 2: same way he coached us when we were three and
- 9:00Speaker 2: 10 was the same way he was coaching us when
- 9:02Speaker 2: we were on a four or five game win streak.
- 9:05Speaker 2: He doesn't, he's, he's always the same guy. Doesn't use
- 9:08Speaker 2: a lot of words, just clear into the point, consistent,
- 9:12Speaker 2: elevates the staff, has brought a great team in around him,
- 9:15Speaker 2: did a great job of selecting defensive coordinator, did a
- 9:16Speaker 2: great job of selecting position coaches, great strength and conditioning staff,
- 9:21Speaker 2: just really kind of came in and created a culture
- 9:23Speaker 2: that allows players and coaches to opt into the culture.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So, I mean, that was Demario Davis in February. And
- 9:32Speaker 1: what Demario Davis says holds a lot of weight with me.
- 9:37Speaker 1: My question is, does that still hold today with the struggle?
- 9:42Speaker 1: Because when expectations rise, people are held accountable. Can you
- 9:48Speaker 1: still be the same aw shucks, say nothing guy and
- 9:51Speaker 1: have buy-in when the results aren't there? It's easy as
- 9:55Speaker 1: you're trying to build it from nothing and you have
- 9:56Speaker 1: a low bar expectation. When you've raised the bar and
- 9:59Speaker 1: you're not meeting expectation now, does that change? And that's
- 10:03Speaker 1: something that Cam Jordan is still supporting. Does that last
- 10:10Speaker 1: throughout the remainder of the season? Something we'll watch for sure.
