- 0:17Hi and welcome to the Curve Weakly, the podcast that keeps you up to date with all the money,
- 0:21business and stock market tea.
- 0:23And they're exactly what I needed to do, but it would take money to get there.
- 0:26Show me the money!
- 0:29Everyone should experience for a class at least once in their lives, and Annie shouldn't miss
- 0:32out just because she can't afford it.
- 0:34Help me, I'm poor.
- 0:36How's that North?
- 0:38Good. Up in the far North?
- 0:40Far far North?
- 0:41She got out just in time.
- 0:42How long did it take you to drive from Auckland to where you are?
- 0:46We left at 10.30 and got here at 5.
- 0:49So quite a while.
- 0:51But yeah, it wasn't due to traffic.
- 0:56Thank goodness we had a foil drive because there were slips all over the roads.
- 1:00I'm surprised you got out there to be honest.
- 1:02Yeah, well we had friends two hours behind us that had to turn around.
- 1:05They got the road got closed and they got deserted and that road had to slip.
- 1:09So for those of you who don't know, Auckland had a pretty horrific weekend of rain
- 1:16and the city went into a state of emergency and yeah, it was pretty horrific.
- 1:21So we had 75% of summer's rain in one day, which is.
- 1:26Is that how much it was?
- 1:28A lot.
- 1:29Yeah, so yeah, made it out and it's been beautiful weather up here and it's almost, I feel
- 1:34like guilty.
- 1:35I feel like guilty posting pictures of the beach itself because I'm like, oh my gosh, but
- 1:39I must say it's been weird and sad to see all of the stuff on social media like how
- 1:45affected so many families and people have been.
- 1:50So it's like an apocalypse, like there's just abandoned cars on the streets and stuff.
- 1:54So yeah, it's pretty.
- 1:56I stayed here at VIX House on Friday night and in the morning, she'd send a friend round
- 2:01to check on her house, just to make sure it wasn't submerged in water.
- 2:06I was on the toilet and she was looking through the window and I was like, had the door open
- 2:11because I didn't think there was going to be no one peeking through the window and I was
- 2:14like sitting there, talking to us on your toilet, I was like, oh my god, so strict, like
- 2:21not good.
- 2:22But hey, enough about our weekends, I know, it's wrapped the shit up, it's like the whole
- 2:28of the Curve Weekly.
- 2:29It's just our weekend.
- 2:30Yeah, so we had another really good week in the stock market last week.
- 2:35The S&P 500 was up 2.3% and the NASDAQ was up 3.
- 2:41So I feel like I'm constantly saying this, but every week's a good week.
- 2:47Oh, hey, don't complain, it was the opposite for a long time.
- 2:50Exactly, but this is the second-best January since the century, so for the last 100 years
- 2:58that we've seen.
- 2:59So we're looking like we're going to have a pretty good year if the history shows.
- 3:02Yeah, there's a lot of, there's a lot of statistics around, if January's good, then usually
- 3:07the whole year's good.
- 3:09But again, you know, stock market, you never really know what's going to happen.
- 3:12So we're supposed to have a Santa rally, which is when December is usually a really good
- 3:17month on the stock market and it wasn't.
- 3:20So I say history shows, but history can change, we can change history.
- 3:26But there is lots going on in the stock market at the moment, if you listen to the Curve Weekly
- 3:30last week, you would have heard I say that it's reporting season, which means that companies
- 3:36have to report in the US, have to report their financial results for the three months
- 3:40enders December.
- 3:42So we're still seeing all that come through and it was a really big week last week of announcements.
- 3:47We had Visa, Massacard and American Express, all released their results.
- 3:54And why they're interesting, what's really good indication in terms of spending a lot
- 3:59of travel, where people travel, they spend a lot and that generates fees for Visa, Massacard
- 4:04and American Express.
- 4:06They were seeing this huge resurgence as people began to travel again.
- 4:10So they had really, really good results.
- 4:12So American Express was up 13% last week, I think, which is quite crazy in one week.
- 4:18So.
- 4:18Wow.
- 4:18That's so.
- 4:19Yeah.
- 4:19So we had all those payments companies, are you invested in any payment companies?
- 4:24I wasn't invested in Visa and Massacard, but I'm not anymore, but they do have some
- 4:31pretty, like, if you think about how many people have a Visa or Massacard, you know,
- 4:36like you, whether it's a debit card or a credit card, you really kind of have to have
- 4:41one in order to be able to pay for things these days and everyone's moving digitally.
- 4:46And I think we've said before, there's still around 70 to 80% of the world's transactions
- 4:51that are done through cash.
- 4:54So there is still such a huge, you know, league of growth for those companies as people still
- 4:59convert to paying digitally or with card.
- 5:02But we also had Microsoft, good old Microsoft out last week as well.
- 5:08It was up about 3% for the week.
- 5:10They had a really good result, their cloud products, which is called Azure, is going really
- 5:15well.
- 5:16And fuck off, it's called Azure.
- 5:18Azure.
- 5:19Yeah.
- 5:20What is that?
- 5:21I don't know.
- 5:22Oh God, you need to have a word to the team, I think.
- 5:24It's one of their chop investors.
- 5:25There was probably teams and teams of people that came up with that name and they're like,
- 5:29you know what?
- 5:30Azure.
- 5:31We will call it Azure.
- 5:33One key thing for Microsoft's results and an announcement that they've made recently
- 5:37is that they're putting a huge amount of investment into artificial intelligence or AI.
- 5:44And you may have heard, it's called the next Google and it's called chat GPT.
- 5:48Oh, I have it.
- 5:49It's going bananas and it's like, it's called the next Google because you can literally
- 5:53type in anything and it spits out, investment thesis, research, like universities are really
- 5:59scared about it because it's literally got all this data and it's just collating.
- 6:05I could write, we could be like, hey, can you write an ad for the curve?
- 6:10And it would literally write it out.
- 6:12I mean, that's what I've been using sort of to write blogs, if you're not realized.
- 6:17So hold on.
- 6:18So it's basically, so it's a Google, except it's an AI where you can ask it to do
- 6:23tasks.
- 6:24You can ask it anything.
- 6:25You can ask it any kind of search, any information.
- 6:28You can ask it to do stuff for you.
- 6:30It's kind of scary because I think it's the first, well, for me, it's the first realisation
- 6:34of like, oh my god, are we going to have like heaps of really no jobs?
- 6:39Well, like, and also people that are, like, qualified doctors and teachers that have got
- 6:45these degrees and haven't actually got the degrees because there's just been AI that's
- 6:47got them.
- 6:48Like, I was like, oh my god, this is like going to be a world of it.
- 6:51That would be regulated though, right?
- 6:53No, yes, or differently, but it's like, it's just crazy to think like, wow, computers
- 6:57are really learning and they're quickly and I had a friend actually on the Instagram
- 7:02they posted, they were on chat GPT and it was like, can you please write my wedding bells
- 7:07for me?
- 7:08And it was just writing on the screen his wedding bells, he was taking a piss, but it was
- 7:13quite funny.
- 7:14I was like, oh my god, like, this is crazy.
- 7:17This is literally going to be kind of the new Google.
- 7:20So, but why I'm talking about it is that Microsoft invested $10 billion into it and so it kind
- 7:26of got the headlines and now everyone's talking about it and they're like, okay, Microsoft
- 7:30kind of knows what they're doing.
- 7:31So if they're investing in this, you know, it's probably going to be quite prominent in
- 7:36our lives going forward, maybe.
- 7:38So yeah, it's quite interesting and we need to make ourselves not dispensable, not
- 7:45a good and dispensable, what's our special skill, what can we do to be really upping out
- 7:50game that AI can't do, you know, like we need to really brainstorm that, we'll get back
- 7:56to you on that, because surely your job could technically be done by a computer, right?
- 7:59Like, yeah, investing, like, yeah, that's scary, yeah, but they've been saying that for
- 8:05a while with investing and nothing's really taken off, but it's like radio, they're
- 8:11like, it's going to die a slow death and it's like, it's kind of still there, isn't it?
- 8:15Yeah, yeah, so, but that's why that's interesting and then also BuzzFeed, do you know BuzzFeed?
- 8:21What do I do?
- 8:22Yeah, love BuzzFeed.
- 8:23Yeah, I thought I'd be able to do it.
- 8:25So this is a news and entertainment company and it was up, guess how much last week's
- 8:30off?
- 8:3127.
- 8:32Higher, at an extra zero.
- 8:34127.
- 8:36No, that would be...
- 8:39Oh wait, 270.
- 8:41Close, 300% in a week.
- 8:44Fuck off.
- 8:45I know.
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:47Why did it go up so much?
- 8:48So Meta, so Facebook, I said that it would pay millions to kind of boost, create a content
- 8:54on BuzzFeed.
- 8:55So it was kind of, it's almost like a tick of approval from a big tech company that, and
- 9:00to be honest, their share price had gone literally from $5.60 in 12 months.
- 9:05So everyone was like, this company's on its knees.
- 9:07And then they've obviously got something unique there because Meta's knees are so dramatic
- 9:12by the way.
- 9:13On its knees.
- 9:14We've really helped.
- 9:15So...
- 9:16Are you thinking dodgy on your knees?
- 9:21No.
- 9:22Kind of.
- 9:23Yeah.
- 9:24I'm thinking more like, begging on your knees, begging.
- 9:27It's been a big weekend, you know.
- 9:29Have you been on your knees?
- 9:32I'm you.
- 9:33Yes.
- 9:34I think we're thinking about two different versions of being on your knees, but anyway.
- 9:38Anywho.
- 9:39God.
- 9:40Oh, I hope you were on your knees.
- 9:43Oh, I hope you were on your knees at my place on Friday night.
- 9:46But anyway, that's a conversation.
- 9:48Oh, God no.
- 9:49I'm injured.
- 9:51You should be celebrating.
- 9:55I am for every single checker.
- 9:59I know.
- 10:00Yeah.
- 10:01I'm excited to take this offline and learn more about who, when, how, why?
- 10:06Yeah.
- 10:07No, very exciting, babe.
- 10:09Yeah.
- 10:10No wonder you're tired.
- 10:12I know.
- 10:13Anyway, continue.
- 10:15Yes.
- 10:16The BuzzFeeds, she surprised me from $5 to 60 cents in 12 months.
- 10:20So it was literally like, everyone thought it was going into the toilet.
- 10:23Like, we don't want to own this.
- 10:25We're coming in and saying, hey, we're actually going to invest millions in this business.
- 10:29You know, we think it's just a great vote of confidence when you see a really reputable tech company like that investing in another company.
- 10:37And that's why it's gone up so much.
- 10:39It also says that it's going to use this chat GPT, you know, to help build content and quizzes.
- 10:46And so I think there's just this whole, maybe it's a bit of hype at the moment.
- 10:50But, you know, around this chat GPT and it's open, you know, artificial intelligence and what it means for, you know, for the next few years or the next, you know, decades, watch this space, I think.
- 11:02Finally, finishing with some economic news.
- 11:06We have inflation figures out.
- 11:09I know you love talking about it.
- 11:11No, you love talking about inflation.
- 11:13We had inflation figures out in New Zealand.
- 11:16We, our inflation is running still very, very high.
- 11:20It's 7.2%.
- 11:23But it does look like it's peak.
- 11:25So it was at 7.8.
- 11:28So it's marginally coming down very, very slowly, but it's hitting in the right direction, which is really good.
- 11:33And we had Aussies inflation as well.
- 11:36That's at 7.8.
- 11:39So they've got a bit of problems there.
- 11:41But they're also their interest rates aren't as high.
- 11:43So they haven't been as aggressive.
- 11:44Whereas we have, and that's why interest rates going out out and inflation is coming down.
- 11:48There's, they haven't been increasing their interest rates as much.
- 11:51So there, that's why their inflation is still at those high levels.
- 11:54If someone wants to learn more about this, just quickly, Vic.
- 11:57If someone wants to learn about inflation versus interest rates, the episode that we did, like what, I think it was WTF.
- 12:05Oh my god, I sound like a boomer.
- 12:07What the fuck is going on in the UK right now?
- 12:09That episode was all about the interest rates and how it was kind of like an economics lesson, understanding what was going on in the UK.
- 12:16So if you're like, oh, that's so confusing, I don't get it.
- 12:19That's a really good episode to listen to.
- 12:21Yeah. And then speaking of the UK, so just put that in perspective.
- 12:24So the UK's inflation is still at 11%, which is absolutely bananas.
- 12:30And the US is at 6.5%.
- 12:34We are still seeing really, really high inflation, which is really, really sad for a lot of people.
- 12:40And you're still going to still going to mean we're feeling the pinch a lot, possibly for the rest, rest of the year.
- 12:46But it is in the right direction, but two to three percent is ideal.
- 12:50And we've saw it a long way to go until we get here.
- 12:53And on that really fun note, that really depressing note.
- 12:59I hope you make it back from up north.
- 13:02Yes, same.
- 13:03We've been checking the roads, so fingers crossed, we get back.
- 13:06Oh, fingers crossed.
- 13:08Thank you so much for still doing it.
- 13:10You know, the curve weekly when you're away on a tropical holiday in the North Island.
- 13:14Well, we're all here getting absolutely sodden.
- 13:16Yeah.
- 13:17Well, you know, I love and best thing.
- 13:20And also, what was they going to say?
- 13:22We've got the curve classroom, the wait list is open.
- 13:25So if anyone's wanting to be first to know and first to get their seats in that,
- 13:28basically, we've only got a certain amount that we're going to sell for this course.
- 13:32And if you want to make sure that you're one of the first to know when they go on sale,
- 13:35then join the wait list.
- 13:36We'll put the link now.
- 13:37Show notes.
- 13:38See you tomorrow, work.
- 13:39Bye.
