Ep. 184. Who is Sera in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:11
Hi guys, it's Megan for vigilante vibes and I am here
• 0:14
  with another character breakdown.
• 0:15
It is not my usual mutant coverage that I've been covering
• 0:19
for months now. It's actually going to be in
• 0:22
honor of Trans Awareness Week. We are going to talk about
• 0:25
Sarah. Sarah first appeared in Angela
• 0:28
Asgard's assassin #1 and was created by Kieran Gillan,
• 0:33
  Marguerite Bennett, and Phil Jimenez.
• 0:35
Sarah was one of the Anchorites, a tiny group of rare wingless
• 0:41
male angels in heaven. From birth Anchorites were
• 0:45
basically enslaved and taught magic only so they could build
• 0:49
or steal after lives from their for their angelic mistresses
• 0:53
since angels didn't have one of their own.
• 0:56
Which is not very Angel like in my opinion, but what do I know?
• 1:01
Like the others, Sarah grew up locked away in a temple in Under
• 1:05
Heaven run by the strict and shady Hierophants.
• 1:08
She was always curious and hungry for forbidden knowledge,
• 1:12
so she secretly poked around the temple's resources behind the
• 1:15
Hierophants backs. One day, Sarah followed A
• 1:18
Hierophant down to the temple's furnace, a massive magical
• 1:21
engine the Hierophant's plan to use to overthrow the Queen of
• 1:25
Angels and take over the 9 realms.
• 1:27
When Sarah looked into it, she saw the past, the present, and
• 1:31
countless possible futures. A Hierophant caught her and
• 1:35
tried to punish her, but she panicked and used a spell that
• 1:38
sent him falling into the furnace to his death.
• 1:41
Around that time, a monster started attacking the temples
• 1:44
and eating the anchorites. Angela, leader of the Hunt,
• 1:47
spent weeks trying to kill it. You will know who Angela is if
• 1:51
you play Marvel Rivals because she's a really big deal.
• 1:56
The fight almost went S for Angela, but Sarah stepped in and
• 2:00
helped her finish the job. In return, Sarah asked Angela to
• 2:03
take her away from this place, and Angela agreed.
• 2:07
They even found a way to remake Sarah's body so she could live
• 2:10
as a woman, and she went to live with Angela afterward.
• 2:14
Later, while chasing a fugitive in the Skintillint Sylvanias,
• 2:17
Sarah and Angel ran into a Hierophant trying to drag Sarah
• 2:22
back to the Temple. He tried to bargain with Angela,
• 2:25
offering info about her missing mother in exchange for Sarah,
• 2:28
but Angela shut that down immediately afterward, Sarah
• 2:33
asked why she didn't at least consider it, and Angela
• 2:36
basically said she'd never let Sarah go back to hell.
• 2:40
Then she was kissed for it. Aw.
• 2:43
After many adventures together, Sarah was killed by one of their
• 2:46
enemies. Angela tried everything to bring
• 2:48
her back, but couldn't because of a curse placed on the angels
• 2:53
long ago. Sarah's soul ended up in hell
• 2:56
when she mouthed off to Hella, which you never, ever do.
• 3:00
She got thrown into a dark solitary cell, which was her
• 3:04
greatest fear since it echoed her childhood imprisonment.
• 3:08
But she found an unexpected ally in Leah, 1 of Hella's servants,
• 3:11
who taught her all about Hell. Malekith eventually learned
• 3:16
about the angels, cursed fate, and went to Hell to see for
• 3:19
  himself. And he found Sarah.
• 3:21
She made a deal with him. He'd take her ring and act as
• 3:24
her vessel, and in return she'd give him info about Angela,
• 3:29
thinking he could use it to undermine Odin.
• 3:31
Malekith agreed, so Sarah told him her whole life story, bound
• 3:37
to Malekith through the ring. Sarah, or rather Malekith
• 3:40
disguised as Sarah, went with Angela on a mission to cleanse
• 3:44
the newborn as Guardian heir Lhasa Odin's daughter.
• 3:48
When the mission ended, Angela realized Sarah was actually
• 3:51
Malekith and forced him to reveal what had really happened
• 3:55
to the real Sarah. Determined to save her, Angela
• 3:58
headed to Hell. When Angela arrived, Sarah
• 4:01
kissed her and then attacked her for breaking her promise to not
• 4:04
to return. Angela apologized and said she'd
• 4:08
do anything to free her, but Sarah explained she belonged to
• 4:11
Hell now. She literally couldn't live
• 4:13
again unless the rules of Hell changed.
• 4:17
The only way to do that was for Angela to defeat Hella and take
• 4:20
her throne. With Sarah and Leah's help,
• 4:23
Angela passed three trials and took down Hella.
• 4:27
Angela became Queen of Hell and Sarah what as her royal consort.
• 4:32
Before stepping down, Angela broke Frazier's curse, gave the
• 4:35
dead angels a peaceful afterlife, and freed Leah from
• 4:39
her magical bounds and restored Sarah to life.
• 4:42
The group moved to New York City afterward, which like, I don't
• 4:45
know how they always end up there.
• 4:48
When strange murders started happening in the city, the new
• 4:51
Thor attacked Angela. Thinking she was involved, Sarah
• 4:54
broke up the fight and explained the real culprit was the
• 4:57
Faustian Queen, an alternate version of Angela brought into
• 5:01
their universe by a magical play.
• 5:04
After the multiverse rebooted, this version of Angela punished
• 5:08
wrongdoers until someone dared to make a deal with her.
• 5:12
Sarah, Angela, Thor, Leah, and Thori tried to stop her, but all
• 5:17
got overpowered. With no other options, Leah made
• 5:20
a deal. Seven more years of life for the
• 5:22
group in exchange for reuniting Faustia with her lost love, Lady
• 5:27
Sarah, which is a different Sarah from this Sarah.
• 5:32
I'm sorry. After the seven years, Faustia
• 5:35
took them back to the present and demanded Leah hold up her
• 5:38
end of the deal. Leah did, bringing Faustia to
• 5:41
Elysium and making her Queen there so she could be with Lady
• 5:45
Sarah again. After that, Leah set off on her
• 5:48
own with Thorry. A few days later, Angela
• 5:52
proposed to Sarah that they simply love each other for as
• 5:55
long as they were able, and Sarah happily agreed.
• 5:59
Later, Angela was kidnapped by the Badoon.
• 6:02
While she was gone, Sarah vanished and her apartment was
• 6:05
rinsed out. Angela left a message there in
• 6:07
case Sarah ever returned. Eventually, Sarah joined Yondu's
• 6:11
Ravagers, helping a group of refugees whose species could
• 6:16
  literally turn prayers into diamonds.
• 6:20
They kept hopping planets to escape Chargesel's Raiders,
• 6:24
eventually settling on Ego the living planet.
• 6:28
At the same time, Angela made a deal with Kid Loki to help
• 6:31
locate Sarah. When Loki held up his end of the
• 6:34
bargain, he teleported Angela and the as Guardians of the
• 6:38
Galaxy to Ego. The Ravagers mistook them for
• 6:41
enemies, but the fighting stopped once Sarah showed up.
• 6:45
Their reunion didn't last long. The Raiders attacked the refugee
• 6:49
camp, and the villains also forced Alter Ego, which is Ego's
• 6:52
Moon, to create deadly hazards. Angela destroyed the device and
• 6:58
killed Chargazel, and the Raiders retreated.
• 7:02
She asked Sarah to come with her, but Sarah refused.
• 7:04
She'd found a real purpose protecting the refugees, so the
• 7:09
Asgardians and the Ravagers split ways.
• 7:11
Later, Sarah tried to swindle Cordyceps Jones in a card game
• 7:16
and ended up owing him money to pay him back.
• 7:19
She planned to steal a powerful diamond from Kumar Taj to sell
• 7:23
to the Collector, but when she broke into the temple, she ran
• 7:26
into Black Cat, who was after the same diamond.
• 7:29
Their fight broke the ruins, keeping the demon Despair sealed
• 7:33
inside. He trapped them both in
• 7:35
  illusions of their worst regrets.
• 7:37
Sarah's being leaving Angela. Eventually they accepted their
• 7:42
pasts and worked together to defeat the demon and trap him
• 7:45
again. After that, Sarah decided it was
• 7:48
finally time to reunite with Angela.
• 7:50
That last part was pretty recent.
• 7:53
It was in Marvel's Pride issue this year, which has a bunch of
• 7:56
other character stories that were pretty good.
• 8:00
But yeah, that is Sarah. She is a transgender lesbian
• 8:03
superhero. She does not have too big of a
• 8:06
story, but I like to think that with more coverage and more
• 8:11
people talking about her, maybe we will get more of her.
• 8:14
So as usual, I have some comics for you to check out just to get
• 8:19
to know her a little better. You can start with Angela
• 8:22
Asgard's Assassin, Angela Queen of Hell and Marvel United a
• 8:28
Pride special #1 So I hope you enjoyed this character
• 8:33
breakdown. I hope you have an amazing trans
• 8:36
Awareness Week and I hope you will like and subscribe so you
• 8:39
don't miss anymore of my character breakdowns.
• 8:41
With that being said, have a marvelous day.
