- 2:39Speaker 3: a good friend, Margaret O'Neil from the United Way. Welcome, Welcome,
- 2:43Speaker 3: Welcome him, Dave.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Thanks for having me in. Gosh, the new studio looks fabulous.
- 2:47Speaker 3: It's almost paid for, well it is.
- 2:50Speaker 5: It looks great and you look great in it.
- 2:51Speaker 6: So thanks for having you.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Thank you, thank you, thank you very much. All right,
- 2:54Speaker 3: So why are you here today?
- 2:56Speaker 5: Well because we're, you know, just mere weeks away from
- 2:59Speaker 5: the Great Rubber Duck Race and we have a few
- 3:01Speaker 5: ducks left to sell and we don't want you to
- 3:03Speaker 5: be that person, you know, who waited till the last
- 3:05Speaker 5: minute and we're sold out. So thanks for letting us
- 3:07Speaker 5: come by and share that it's not too late to
- 3:10Speaker 5: get your duck, and we have some great prizes. First
- 3:12Speaker 5: place is four thousand dollars.
- 3:13Speaker 3: You could use that right so absolutely.
- 3:15Speaker 5: And a five dollars investment to get four thousand. Second
- 3:18Speaker 5: place is great tickets to see Brandon or sorry Luke
- 3:21Speaker 5: Bryan at the Civic Center and a night at the Marriott.
- 3:24Speaker 5: You can get Brandon Lake tickets. You can get wu tickets,
- 3:27Speaker 5: Marshall tickets. We have ten great prizes. Even the last
- 3:30Speaker 5: duck number ten gets a flock in next year's race.
- 3:34Speaker 5: And so five dollars text duck Race all one word
- 3:38Speaker 5: to five one five five five. That easy takes you
- 3:40Speaker 5: right to the site. Visit us on Facebook. You can
- 3:42Speaker 5: get a list of those prizes if you want to
- 3:44Speaker 5: double check or always always welcome at the website.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Give us the history of this duck race.
- 3:50Speaker 5: The best you know it, well so before my time. Okay,
- 3:53Speaker 5: that's the best I know it. It was part of
- 3:55Speaker 5: the regatta back in the day. The Great Rubber Duck
- 3:58Speaker 5: Race comes with lots of nos algia. We hear from
- 4:01Speaker 5: people all the time. I can remember my mom bringing me.
- 4:03Speaker 5: There are pictures of the duck grace years ago. Always
- 4:07Speaker 5: been a part of the United Way work, I think,
- 4:09Speaker 5: And so when the regatta stopped, I think the Duck
- 4:11Speaker 5: Race also kind of took a hiatus. And you know,
- 4:15Speaker 5: we're really grateful. West Virginia. American Water reached out to
- 4:17Speaker 5: us actually the year of COVID and said, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 5: fundraising's tough, you can't see people, you can't be together.
- 4:24Speaker 5: How you feel about bringing the duck Race back? And
- 4:26Speaker 5: it was again before my time, so I'm like, I
- 4:29Speaker 5: don't know, how do I feel about that? And what
- 4:31Speaker 5: would that look like? And so they kindly got us started,
- 4:34Speaker 5: did that a couple of years around Labor Day, and
- 4:36Speaker 5: when the regatta came back thanks to the mayor and others,
- 4:38Speaker 5: they asked if we wanted to return to that position.
- 4:41Speaker 5: So now it's July, the sixth part of the regd
- 4:43Speaker 5: It's going to be Sunday, ten thousand ducks off the
- 4:46Speaker 5: South Side Bridge, not real ducks, rubber ducks.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Important distinction.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Well, you know, some people go, I know how you
- 4:52Speaker 5: get all those little ducks back And I'm like, well,
- 4:55Speaker 5: we have this market, you know, this big net and boom,
- 4:57Speaker 5: and we keep them contained in their rubber.
- 5:00Speaker 3: So it harkens back to the famous wkrps the turkey
- 5:04Speaker 3: drop as God as my witness off the turkeys could fly,
- 5:07Speaker 3: so it hearkets back to that. But no, these are
- 5:08Speaker 3: not real ducks here.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Every duck that goes in comes out. We promise to
- 5:11Speaker 5: all our friends are river lovers. We don't leave this
- 5:14Speaker 5: stray duck out there to do anything. And you know,
- 5:16Speaker 5: it's a good time. Doesn't take very long. People come
- 5:18Speaker 5: and sit at the levee and watch the race, and
- 5:22Speaker 5: many times the prize winners are there. We announce them
- 5:24Speaker 5: right away. And it's a great way to give back.
- 5:26Speaker 7: You know.
- 5:26Speaker 5: We strive at the United Way to find a level
- 5:29Speaker 5: for anybody to donate, to contribute to the community and
- 5:32Speaker 5: know they're giving back. And so five dollars for a
- 5:35Speaker 5: duck and a chance at four thousand Kim, we're.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Talking with Margaret O'Neill from the Unighted Way of Central
- 5:40Speaker 3: West Virginia. But Dave Alan Show and five Eddielive is
- 5:42Speaker 3: brought to you part by Meeks Reeltory Group. Looking for
- 5:44Speaker 3: that experience you can trust. Rich the realtor meets one
- 5:46Speaker 3: of the area's premier agents specializing in both commercial and
- 5:49Speaker 3: residential real estate for expert guidance and proven results. Contact
- 5:54Speaker 3: Meeks Realty Group that is Rich surrealtor that's the guy
- 5:57Speaker 3: three zero four nine three two seventy four eighty eight
- 5:59Speaker 3: or email client clining with a K at Meeks Realty
- 6:02Speaker 3: Group dot com. Let's talk about the work of the
- 6:04Speaker 3: United Way Central West Virginia and uh, you know, unfortunately
- 6:08Speaker 3: people only think of you guys. Some people do in
- 6:11Speaker 3: times of tragedy. And we saw, you know, within right now,
- 6:14Speaker 3: the devastation up in Ohio County and in Marion County
- 6:17Speaker 3: they named there was an eighth person that was that
- 6:21Speaker 3: was I don't think they've identified the person yet, but
- 6:23Speaker 3: there was an eighth body that the governor announced yesterday.
- 6:27Speaker 3: You guys do a lot when there's not a disaster,
- 6:30Speaker 3: but you really shine when there is a disaster.
- 6:33Speaker 5: You know, there's been thousands of two to one one
- 6:35Speaker 5: calls to the unit away in the Wheeling community and
- 6:38Speaker 5: thousands of calls to the unit away in Fairmont, Marion
- 6:42Speaker 5: County community. They're there to supply needs for you. The
- 6:45Speaker 5: executive director, Stacy Stevens and Wheeling was mucking out somebody's
- 6:49Speaker 5: basement because it was a little older lady who reached
- 6:51Speaker 5: out and said, I don't have anybody, you know, the
- 6:53Speaker 5: United Way. So every day somebody has a tragedy, right,
- 6:56Speaker 5: and so you're right, we're out there trying to make
- 6:58Speaker 5: sure people are fed and kids have use and their
- 7:01Speaker 5: shelters open when people need them and all the things
- 7:03Speaker 5: on a daily basis. But when there's a disaster, people
- 7:06Speaker 5: trust us. We're very grateful for that. We try to
- 7:09Speaker 5: be the absolute most transparent, best stewards of people's donations.
- 7:13Speaker 5: There's no admin fee taking off of those contributions through disaster,
- 7:17Speaker 5: and so people are trusting and they understand that it's
- 7:19Speaker 5: going to stay right there. It's going to go back
- 7:21Speaker 5: to you know, by hvac unit or make sure that
- 7:23Speaker 5: somebody's hole or that some senior has heat when it
- 7:26Speaker 5: gets closer to wintertime or one hundred degrees next week,
- 7:29Speaker 5: that there's a way for them to stay cool. And
- 7:31Speaker 5: so we're you know, we're just blessed that we don't
- 7:33Speaker 5: just have the unit aways, we have two one one
- 7:35Speaker 5: and there's a direct connection for people to reach out
- 7:37Speaker 5: and get help.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Well explain the whole two one one thing. And we've
- 7:40Speaker 3: been on the show talking about this in the past,
- 7:41Speaker 3: but I know yesterday when we were talking with some
- 7:44Speaker 3: folks opened the Wheeling air maybe was on yesterday's Metro
- 7:47Speaker 3: News midday they were they kept hitting that two to
- 7:49Speaker 3: one one. Explain how that was.
- 7:50Speaker 5: So it's West Virginia's information referral number. It's actually two
- 7:53Speaker 5: on one across the country. If you're traveling, you can
- 7:56Speaker 5: do the same. Most of the time, our calls relate
- 7:58Speaker 5: to people in need of a meet at, assistance for
- 8:00Speaker 5: a rent, or mutility assistance, or food insecurity, Where can
- 8:05Speaker 5: I find a daycare? Where can I find a health department?
- 8:08Speaker 5: All the things that are immediate needs to those people.
- 8:11Speaker 5: But in disaster, we keep a running list it's real time,
- 8:14Speaker 5: sometimes just on a legal pad of every shelter that's open,
- 8:18Speaker 5: where you can get supplies, where you can get volunteers,
- 8:20Speaker 5: links to the Red Cross, links to the other places
- 8:23Speaker 5: where people can sign up to get help. So you
- 8:25Speaker 5: can call to on one anytime, but in disaster it's
- 8:28Speaker 5: a super connector to get your real time help and
- 8:31Speaker 5: real time care.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And let's talk about this heat wave that we're expecting.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Because we've had severe weather. It seems like for weeks
- 8:37Speaker 3: it's one storm after another. It looks like after today
- 8:40Speaker 3: that that's going to go away, but in its wake
- 8:42Speaker 3: is going to be the heat. And we're expecting I
- 8:45Speaker 3: mean like he'd end of seas as they say, like
- 8:49Speaker 3: about one hundred. Next week, the real time temperature is
- 8:52Speaker 3: going to be in the nineties, I mean ninety seven
- 8:54Speaker 3: ninety eight, the warmest temperatures we've had in some time.
- 8:57Speaker 3: What do you folks got planned for next week?
- 8:58Speaker 5: So we already had a conversation on Tuesday. The City
- 9:02Speaker 5: of Charleston's care team is fabulous to be able to
- 9:04Speaker 5: go out and do hands on care hot or cold.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Our job is sometimes to help supply water and popsicles,
- 9:11Speaker 5: and so we made sure they've got plenty of those
- 9:12Speaker 5: on hand. You'll should get a press release probably today
- 9:15Speaker 5: or tomorrow that lets people know what places they can
- 9:18Speaker 5: go to be safe and be cool. And you know,
- 9:20Speaker 5: I just caution people that we always think of those
- 9:23Speaker 5: are who are unhoused and unsheltered, and we really do
- 9:26Speaker 5: worry about those folks when it's you know, you're sleeping
- 9:28Speaker 5: on pavement and it's one hundred degrees and all the things,
- 9:31Speaker 5: But do check on your senior neighbors. Heat like that
- 9:33Speaker 5: is extremely difficult on people who have any kind of
- 9:36Speaker 5: breathing problems if the power to go out and they
- 9:38Speaker 5: need oxygen. We just always want to make sure people
- 9:41Speaker 5: are again. You're connected, you can call to on one
- 9:43Speaker 5: if the power goes out. We can share where there
- 9:45Speaker 5: are shelters, medical shelters where you can go and make
- 9:47Speaker 5: sure your oxygen gets plugged in. But you know, we're
- 9:50Speaker 5: already trying to make sure.
- 9:52Speaker 3: It's really hard.
- 9:52Speaker 5: I mean it's I'm not gonna lie. It's hard to
- 9:55Speaker 5: help people when it's just really hot outside and you
- 9:57Speaker 5: don't know where to go. But there'll be places open
- 9:59Speaker 5: and they'll be out there reaching out with cold water
- 10:01Speaker 5: and cold or frozen popsicles and anything we can do
- 10:04Speaker 5: to kind of cool people off.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Let's get back to the rubber ducks. Talk about your
- 10:09Speaker 3: T shirt. I got a nice little T shirt here.
- 10:12Speaker 3: We're not on television, Intel have a face for radio.
- 10:16Speaker 3: But yeah, i'll hold it up to well.
- 10:19Speaker 5: You can see it on our Facebook page. Beautifully modeled
- 10:22Speaker 5: by a Dell ball. It's a one of a kind
- 10:24Speaker 5: design by JPO and I think you know JP's with
- 10:26Speaker 5: City National Bank, but he reached out to us and said,
- 10:29Speaker 5: how about I designed a duck shirt, so it truly
- 10:32Speaker 5: is a one of a kind if you're a collector,
- 10:33Speaker 5: and again if you're that nostalgia that bought duck t
- 10:36Speaker 5: shirts years ago, with the T shirts twenty five dollars
- 10:39Speaker 5: and with the T shirt, that gets you one duck
- 10:41Speaker 5: entered into the Duck race. So you get your collector
- 10:44Speaker 5: T shirt and a duck in the race for twenty
- 10:46Speaker 5: five dollars. You can come by the office anytime corner
- 10:48Speaker 5: of Court and Smith Street here in Charleston. We'll happily
- 10:51Speaker 5: take care of you. Or you can just go to
- 10:52Speaker 5: the Facebook page again, click on it, pay for it,
- 10:55Speaker 5: and we'll send it Tea in the mill.
- 10:56Speaker 3: All right, sounds like a lot of fun. It always is.
- 10:58Speaker 5: It's going to be great. Don't forget us at the
- 11:00Speaker 5: God it will be selling all four days prior to
- 11:02Speaker 5: the race on Sunday. Our thanks to the city for
- 11:05Speaker 5: letting us be a part of it, and grateful to
- 11:06Speaker 5: you for letting us share the message.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Absolutely and well if we need to have you back
- 11:10Speaker 3: on again before we got back yeah, all right, all right, okay,
- 11:14Speaker 3: hold on, got a text for you. Do you all
- 11:17Speaker 3: help with pets as well? Because some facilities don't allow pets,
- 11:20Speaker 3: so if.
- 11:21Speaker 5: There's a shelter, pets are allowed. We've had numbers of
- 11:25Speaker 5: pets at our warming centers that we do in the
- 11:27Speaker 5: winter when it gets really really cold, everything from snakes
- 11:30Speaker 5: to rabbits and cats and dogs. There are can change.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I miss rabbits and dogs right.
- 11:34Speaker 5: There are ways that they must be safe and contained
- 11:37Speaker 5: for our other guests. Those rarities don't happen very often,
- 11:40Speaker 5: but cats and dogs are regular. If we if we
- 11:43Speaker 5: as a united way, the question is do we help
- 11:44Speaker 5: we support our humane society always. We've done food drives,
- 11:49Speaker 5: you know, for not just people, but for animals. And
- 11:52Speaker 5: again it's a great way to know that if you
- 11:54Speaker 5: see it stray animal, please reach out to somebody because
- 11:57Speaker 5: there are people in the city that can help with that.
- 11:59Speaker 3: All right, Margot, I appreciate you being here. Thanks. Lof
- 12:01Speaker 3: what we'll do is we'll hang out with me during
- 12:03Speaker 3: the break. We'll get a picture of us with our
- 12:05Speaker 3: key shirts. How's that are Metro News Midday producer Stephanie
- 12:08Speaker 3: poly is in the studio who has absolutely nothing else

- 15:21Speaker 3: you Monday at the memorial for the late Doug Scaff
- 15:26Speaker 3: and I thought I would give you an opportunity as
- 15:28Speaker 3: well to weigh in on your friendship if you want
- 15:30Speaker 3: with Doug Scaff, sure, Dave.
- 15:34Speaker 11: Doug was a Doug was someone I've known for a
- 15:38Speaker 11: long time before I was ever elected to the House.
- 15:41Speaker 11: I met him in twenty twelve when I was twenty
- 15:44Speaker 11: one years old and had just been elected to the
- 15:47Speaker 11: Nitro City Council. He was on our Development Authority Board
- 15:51Speaker 11: in Nitro. Of course owned a business in Nitro. Doug
- 15:56Speaker 11: is someone who maintained so many different relationships all across
- 16:01Speaker 11: the political spectrum, and he's someone who cannot be replaced.
- 16:08Speaker 6: His influence in the in.
- 16:09Speaker 11: Kannall County is was vast and I just think he
- 16:15Speaker 11: leaves behind such a legacy of service, of devotion to
- 16:20Speaker 11: his family, devotion to his community, someone who's whose contributions
- 16:27Speaker 11: won't be forgotten.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely, what a turnout there Monday night. I mean,
- 16:31Speaker 3: I told the folks on the air yesterday or I
- 16:34Speaker 3: guess Tuesday delegate, I got there, you know, thinking, well,
- 16:38Speaker 3: wrap up Metro News midday three do a little a
- 16:41Speaker 3: few little post show things in the office. I head
- 16:43Speaker 3: over there about three forty five, three fifty, get in,
- 16:46Speaker 3: do pay my respects, and get out. When I got there,
- 16:51Speaker 3: which was about three point fifty, walked in with a
- 16:54Speaker 3: couple of friends of mine, and the line was already
- 16:57Speaker 3: and then they hadn't even opened the doors yet, and
- 16:59Speaker 3: it was pouring the rain. Of course, it cleared up
- 17:00Speaker 3: a little bit later, but I think we finally got
- 17:02Speaker 3: in around six fifteen or six thirty, you know, and
- 17:05Speaker 3: it just goes to show and then they had the
- 17:07Speaker 3: service and then it picked back up again afterwards. Talked
- 17:11Speaker 3: to somebody that said they were there like like ten,
- 17:13Speaker 3: I mean, Coach Huggins was their former senator. Mansion was there.
- 17:16Speaker 3: And what I loved about it is when you looked
- 17:18Speaker 3: around that crowd. Yeah, you saw a lot of elected officials,
- 17:21Speaker 3: you saw people from the business community, but you also
- 17:23Speaker 3: saw people that were normal people, not people like us.
- 17:28Speaker 3: I mean, they were actually just normal everyday people that
- 17:31Speaker 3: Doug may have, you know, may have waited on Doug
- 17:34Speaker 3: at a restaurant, maybe somebody that you know worked with
- 17:36Speaker 3: him twenty That just goes to show you what kind
- 17:39Speaker 3: of what kind of guy with a legacy and an
- 17:41Speaker 3: impact that doug'scaff made on people's lives.
- 17:43Speaker 11: I've never seen anything like that memorial. I got there
- 17:48Speaker 11: about four fifteen, and the line wasn't already in the
- 17:52Speaker 11: parking lot. Yeah, and how appropriate for Doug though. Oh yeah,
- 17:57Speaker 11: I mean someone who had so many relationships, as I mentioned,
- 18:02Speaker 11: with so many different people. I mean, from people like
- 18:04Speaker 11: us who are politically obsessed, to the common everyday person
- 18:08Speaker 11: who just had some sort of casual interaction with them.
- 18:12Speaker 11: I mean, like you said, the whole spectrum.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Yes, everybody was there. It's nine twenty five. Vaccines are
- 18:18Speaker 3: your best protections against severe disease from fluid COVID nineteen.
- 18:20Speaker 3: If you're sixty five or older, risk less, do more
- 18:22Speaker 3: with this season's vaccines. Get started. Vaccines not GOV paid
- 18:25Speaker 3: for by the US Department of Health and Human Services.
- 18:27Speaker 3: All right, Doug, uh Doug? Wow?
- 18:31Speaker 6: Hey, I think Hey, I've been called worse.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Andy Andy Shamil Delegate Shamblain. All right, you and waste management?
- 18:37Speaker 3: What's up?
- 18:38Speaker 6: Yeah, waste manage. We have a we have a relationship
- 18:42Speaker 6: with each other.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, all right, all right, so we talked about
- 18:45Speaker 3: this a couple of days ago in the state wide show.
- 18:46Speaker 3: But for those that you you know, that are in
- 18:48Speaker 3: the area and you're actually their representative, what happened.
- 18:52Speaker 11: Here, Yeah, back in March during the legislative session actually
- 18:57Speaker 11: was still still occurring. I fouled a formal letter with
- 19:01Speaker 11: the Public Service Commission, not fully even realizing exactly what
- 19:05Speaker 11: they would do with it, simply because I had literally
- 19:10Speaker 11: dozens and dozens and dozens of complaints from my constituents,
- 19:14Speaker 11: specifically in the Cross Lanes area, regarding their garbage picked up.
- 19:20Speaker 11: And you know, those complaints ranged from folks who had
- 19:23Speaker 11: went almost a month without having their garbage picked up,
- 19:28Speaker 11: to folks who had tried to contact waste Management through email,
- 19:35Speaker 11: through their website, through you know, via phone, and they
- 19:38Speaker 11: just weren't receiving much communication from them. So I filed
- 19:43Speaker 11: a request with PSC for them to investigate to look
- 19:48Speaker 11: into this, and basically the result was almost two hundred
- 19:54Speaker 11: documented complaints from the public regarding the type of service
- 20:00Speaker 11: they were being provided by Waste Management.
- 20:02Speaker 3: And so these complaints, as you said, they kind of
- 20:06Speaker 3: went from service not being one that should not being
- 20:09Speaker 3: picked up, problems with billing, just a myriad of things.
- 20:12Speaker 11: Right, right, and and to be fair to Waste Management,
- 20:16Speaker 11: I mean, we did have severe winter weather that complicated
- 20:19Speaker 11: there their service pickup.
- 20:21Speaker 6: But you know, for customers to go.
- 20:24Speaker 3: A month is unacceptable and it's a health hazard.
- 20:27Speaker 11: It becomes a health absolutely, you know, it becomes a
- 20:29Speaker 11: health hazard. And the Public Service Commission took this very seriously.
- 20:35Speaker 11: And and you can go online and look at all
- 20:38Speaker 11: the documentation that was generated from this inquiry and basically
- 20:43Speaker 11: they came up with basically eight eight findings, eight recommendations
- 20:51Speaker 11: for them to improve their service.
- 20:53Speaker 3: And those were okay.
- 20:54Speaker 11: So first, Waste Management has been ordered to do a
- 20:58Speaker 11: yearly reminder for customers to update their contact information and
- 21:02Speaker 11: their preferences. Second, file a template with the Commission outlining
- 21:07Speaker 11: its plan of action in the event.
- 21:09Speaker 6: Customers are missed.
- 21:11Speaker 11: Third, establish a contingency pickup plan if Waste Management misses
- 21:18Speaker 11: a route. Fourth, and I think this one is very significant.
- 21:24Speaker 11: This is one of the points of contention. If you
- 21:26Speaker 11: go and read the report, they've been ordered to implement
- 21:30Speaker 11: a tracking system so that they can measure how many
- 21:34Speaker 11: customers have been missed, because that's one of the real
- 21:38Speaker 11: points of contention. Is the company says, well, you know,
- 21:40Speaker 11: it wasn't as bad as what people are claiming, but
- 21:42Speaker 11: yet they don't have any data, they don't have any
- 21:45Speaker 11: evidence to either support Yeah.
- 21:47Speaker 10: Right.
- 21:47Speaker 11: And and fifth, which I think the company claims they
- 21:52Speaker 11: were already doing, but they're not to subject any extra
- 21:56Speaker 11: charges for missed pickups. And then sixth, issue pro rated
- 22:04Speaker 11: credits to any customer who's missed more than twelve days
- 22:08Speaker 11: of service. Seventh, and this is this may be the
- 22:13Speaker 11: most significant finding. Immediately comply with PSC rules by placing
- 22:19Speaker 11: a toll free number on their website that will allow
- 22:23Speaker 11: customers to reach a live customer service representative. That's one
- 22:27Speaker 11: of the biggest problems is communication.
- 22:29Speaker 3: And that's not exclusive to this company. I mean that
- 22:32Speaker 3: we saw it with the well, we saw it with
- 22:35Speaker 3: the water crisis, but we also saw it just last
- 22:37Speaker 3: year with the gas crisis. You know that, and that's
- 22:40Speaker 3: something then you're in the legislature. We'll talk about that
- 22:42Speaker 3: in the moment. That's something that the legislature, and it
- 22:44Speaker 3: was bipartisan effort, you know, Republicans, Democrats getting together and
- 22:47Speaker 3: say these these companies have got to have a way
- 22:51Speaker 3: to reach people and for people to reach to reach them.
- 22:55Speaker 11: Right, That's yeah, that's exactly right. I mean these companies,
- 23:00Speaker 11: and I'm not beating up on waste Management. They provide
- 23:03Speaker 11: an essential service. And it's as I mentioned the other day,
- 23:06Speaker 11: it's like the old Merle Haggard song. You know you
- 23:09Speaker 11: take me for granted. Yeah, you know, when when it's
- 23:12Speaker 11: done well, people rarely notice or give credit, right, and
- 23:15Speaker 11: when it's not done well, you know, it becomes a
- 23:17Speaker 11: big issue. Yes, I mean, I'm not not just bashing
- 23:20Speaker 11: waste Management. They're one of the largest waste haulers in
- 23:23Speaker 11: the state and they provide an essential service. But people
- 23:27Speaker 11: have to be able to communicate with them. And we
- 23:30Speaker 11: have an aging older population in many parts of the state,
- 23:34Speaker 11: and not everybody is is digital. Not everybody can send
- 23:39Speaker 11: an email, not everyone can send an instant chat option
- 23:42Speaker 11: on their website. So I mean, to me, the most
- 23:45Speaker 11: significant area of improvement has to be providing this number
- 23:50Speaker 11: with a live customer service representative.
- 23:52Speaker 3: And again we're talking with Deli gets Andy Shama of
- 23:54Speaker 3: The Dave Allen Show in five eighty Live brought to you,
- 23:56Speaker 3: impired by Hustin's Pizza. Well, this month you can get
- 23:58Speaker 3: a large JT Nitch Pepperoni pa an entire whole tenant
- 24:01Speaker 3: sub twenty three to ninety nine. Get your closest Hustins
- 24:04Speaker 3: for delivery, pickup, or dine in by going to Huston's
- 24:06Speaker 3: Pizza dot com. What was the response from Waste Management?
- 24:10Speaker 3: I mean, when you've had these discussions and they got
- 24:13Speaker 3: these recommendations coming out of the Public Service Commission, what
- 24:17Speaker 3: was it? What's the response been.
- 24:18Speaker 6: They haven't had a they haven't had much of a
- 24:22Speaker 6: public response.
- 24:23Speaker 11: They've put out statements saying that they're going to work
- 24:26Speaker 11: with the PSC. That's pretty much been their response. They're
- 24:30Speaker 11: going to comply with what PSC has ordered them to.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Have you had any you yourself as an individual, have
- 24:36Speaker 3: you had any conversations with the company.
- 24:37Speaker 11: Yes, I have had some informal conversations. Okay, all right,
- 24:41Speaker 11: And when I've been given specific issues by my constituents,
- 24:45Speaker 11: I've been able to get that information to them and
- 24:48Speaker 11: they have fixed them.
- 24:49Speaker 6: So I give them credit for that.
- 24:51Speaker 3: All right, all right, let's move away from waste Management
- 24:54Speaker 3: for a moment. Let's talk about the legislature. So wrapped
- 24:56Speaker 3: up of course, session a couple of months ago, looking
- 24:59Speaker 3: probably at a had a special session. We don't know
- 25:02Speaker 3: when that's going to be, but I know and something
- 25:05Speaker 3: because of your because of your daytime job, your real job,
- 25:08Speaker 3: so to speak, that you're a very much interest to
- 25:10Speaker 3: you and your constituents too, is pe I A. And
- 25:12Speaker 3: we had a lot of issues there, as you know now.
- 25:15Speaker 6: There's a lot of issues with p I A.
- 25:17Speaker 11: And I'm afraid that that it lacks a clear solution.
- 25:23Speaker 7: Uh.
- 25:24Speaker 11: It is, of course a program that we proviought, a service,
- 25:27Speaker 11: a program, a benefit that we provide our employees, and
- 25:30Speaker 11: I think it's important that we find better ways to
- 25:33Speaker 11: fund it, to supplement it.
- 25:35Speaker 3: And of course the issue of foster care, you know,
- 25:37Speaker 3: that's that's likely to be discussed. Well, now you guys
- 25:40Speaker 3: have interims coming up right, correct, Yeah, interms next week, interms.
- 25:44Speaker 3: And that's a stone stonewall. The stonewall. But you can't
- 25:47Speaker 3: do a special session because the code says that special
- 25:49Speaker 3: sessions have to be in the seat of government. So
- 25:51Speaker 3: if they were they were in Charleston, you may be
- 25:53Speaker 3: able to knock out, you know, two birds with one stone,
- 25:55Speaker 3: but you can't do that because you can't do it
- 25:57Speaker 3: here in Lewis County. You got to do it in Charleston,
- 26:00Speaker 3: and we don't have an idea when that special session
- 26:02Speaker 3: might be.
- 26:03Speaker 11: No, no one has put out any formal statement.
- 26:06Speaker 6: I keep hearing.
- 26:07Speaker 11: Maybe the end of July.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Maybe maybe yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 11: And and you know, in terms of foster care, I do,
- 26:14Speaker 11: I do really appreciate the steps that Governor Morsey's administration
- 26:17Speaker 11: has taken with some of the reorganization efforts with DHS.
- 26:22Speaker 11: It seems like to me that that the new leadership
- 26:25Speaker 11: in that department's really interested in digging into the details
- 26:29Speaker 11: of those problems and and sort of reorganizing. So so
- 26:32Speaker 11: I think, you know, I'm optimistic about that aspect of
- 26:36Speaker 11: the new administration.
- 26:37Speaker 3: And I know that you can't get into specifics I
- 26:39Speaker 3: would ever ask you to, but you are you are
- 26:41Speaker 3: a teacher and being on the front lines. Forget about
- 26:45Speaker 3: your role as a delegate. As a teacher, you have
- 26:48Speaker 3: dealt with this in your classroom with foster kids, and
- 26:51Speaker 3: it's something that I remember. And uh, you know, the
- 26:56Speaker 3: delig channel and I have known each other for a
- 26:58Speaker 3: long time, but I can remember when I was in
- 27:00Speaker 3: my role with the Secretary of State's Office and we
- 27:02Speaker 3: would go into schools and take pictures of what we
- 27:05Speaker 3: did voter registers. How you and I met doing voter
- 27:07Speaker 3: registration drives at Nitral High School. Uh And and I
- 27:10Speaker 3: would go in and we would just like to get
- 27:12Speaker 3: a picture. And this was something that was totally foreign
- 27:14Speaker 3: to me. No matter what the school was. We had
- 27:17Speaker 3: to have, you know, the instructor, somebody like you or
- 27:20Speaker 3: or a counselor or something come and say, Okay, well,
- 27:22Speaker 3: these kids can't be in the picture. And I'm thinking,
- 27:25Speaker 3: why can't they be in the picture? And it's because
- 27:29Speaker 3: so many of them were in foster care. And I
- 27:32Speaker 3: mean at some of the schools, and I did this
- 27:34Speaker 3: all over the state of West Virginia. Andy, it may
- 27:38Speaker 3: be if you had you had a group of let's say,
- 27:41Speaker 3: fifty kids, there might be like ten or fifteen of them.
- 27:44Speaker 3: But we had to exclude from the from the photos,
- 27:46Speaker 3: which we gladly did. But that was something that was
- 27:48Speaker 3: totally need me. It's like, we have that many kids
- 27:50Speaker 3: in foster care. You saw it. I mean you're an instructor,
- 27:53Speaker 3: you see it every day in the classroom.
- 27:55Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we definitely do. And you know one
- 27:58Speaker 11: thing that I think so some adults who aren't who
- 28:02Speaker 11: don't have children in school, at least having in recent years,
- 28:07Speaker 11: don't fully appreciate. It's how different school is compared to
- 28:10Speaker 11: the way it was when you know, when you were
- 28:12Speaker 11: in school, even when I was in school. I mean,
- 28:15Speaker 11: we have such a large number of students who are
- 28:18Speaker 11: living in non traditional homes, foster care, homes, placement. I
- 28:24Speaker 11: have had some kids who are living in group home before,
- 28:29Speaker 11: and a large number who are living with their grandparents,
- 28:32Speaker 11: even their great grandparents. Right, So, I mean it's such
- 28:35Speaker 11: a different socioeconomic status and dynamic that the schools are
- 28:41Speaker 11: dealing with now compared to what it was even ten
- 28:44Speaker 11: or twenty years. Oh yeah, yeah, I mean it's a
- 28:47Speaker 11: vastly different.
- 28:48Speaker 3: It's it would be to the average person, as you said, Delegate,
- 28:51Speaker 3: it doesen't have kids in school, or doesn't spend a
- 28:53Speaker 3: lot of time around schools. In some ways, you wouldn't
- 28:56Speaker 3: recognize it as far as what it is. And I
- 28:59Speaker 3: know that there's a lot of hard working teachers and
- 29:01Speaker 3: administrators that are doing everything they can. And it's not
- 29:05Speaker 3: just about the book the book learning. I mean they're
- 29:07Speaker 3: they're buying meals for kids, they're buying clothes for kids.
- 29:11Speaker 11: And and and you know, the the challenging thing is UH.
- 29:15Speaker 11: For example, I was I help UH my my my
- 29:19Speaker 11: own school in Nintory High School, we set up a
- 29:21Speaker 11: counseling program through a local company UH to provide mental
- 29:26Speaker 11: health services for our students. And schools are are performing
- 29:30Speaker 11: so many additional functions, as you alluded to, in addition
- 29:34Speaker 11: to the academics. I mean, schools are becoming more like
- 29:37Speaker 11: a one stop shop community center for the community because
- 29:41Speaker 11: these kids have so many different and varied needs. So
- 29:46Speaker 11: so it is, it's it's a changing landscape.
- 29:48Speaker 3: It is, and hopefully we can get it back on
- 29:50Speaker 3: the right track because it's as you said, it's changing.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Went have a text here before you before I let
- 29:56Speaker 3: you go. So is does delicate? Shamleck have info on
- 29:58Speaker 3: the Cross Lanes road project.
- 30:00Speaker 11: Actually have a meeting with d H this morning, and
- 30:04Speaker 11: I hope to have some info on that. I can
- 30:08Speaker 11: tell you this. The road project is moving forward, contrary
- 30:12Speaker 11: to the rumors that are out there that funding's been
- 30:15Speaker 11: pulled or there's some some some reason that is and
- 30:19Speaker 11: it is going to move forward. We're still waiting on
- 30:22Speaker 11: the utility companies to finish their infrastructure relocation. I mean
- 30:28Speaker 11: that's been the hold up this entire time. We were
- 30:30Speaker 11: hoping that we would be back in operation in April.
- 30:34Speaker 11: That didn't happen, and here we are June's passing and
- 30:38Speaker 11: still hasn't happened.
- 30:39Speaker 6: It's very frustrating.
- 30:40Speaker 3: All right, So what exactly where are we talking about this? Okay,
- 30:43Speaker 3: a particular road project.
- 30:45Speaker 11: We're talking about immediately after the cross Lanes exit in
- 30:51Speaker 11: the Interstate, and the road project goes from the Interstate
- 30:56Speaker 11: exit all the way to the stop light at Kroger's
- 30:59Speaker 11: in front of end Andrew Jackson Middle School, so that
- 31:01Speaker 11: whole area will eventually be four lanes.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Okay through there. All right, but you said this, You
- 31:07Speaker 3: have a meeting later this morning. Maybe you can report
- 31:09Speaker 3: back to us or we'll have you on again real soon.
- 31:11Speaker 3: You gets an update on that, all right? Absolutely, delAG
