- 0:00Speaker 1: Now the eleven to ten KFAB Certified Transmission Sports briefits
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Husker Buzz Edition Big ten Media Days. Coach Will
- 0:07Speaker 1: addressed the media yesterday and Sean had a lot to
- 0:11Speaker 1: say about the quarterback situation. He seemed pretty pleased by
- 0:14Speaker 1: the three quarterbacks that we have here who all started
- 0:18Speaker 1: games last year. Good morning, Sean, Good morning guys.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yeah, from Matt Ruhle, I think you know, they really
- 0:25Speaker 2: like the spot they're in with three quarterbacks that have
- 0:28Speaker 2: been starters in major conference games a year ago. And
- 0:31Speaker 2: you know, there's really probably not very many, if any
- 0:35Speaker 2: teams in the country that can say that with Danny
- 0:38Speaker 2: Kalin coming from obviously Virginia Calandria with what he did
- 0:43Speaker 2: at un l V and then what TJ Latif was
- 0:46Speaker 2: able to do last year when Dylan Ryola got hurt.
- 0:48Speaker 2: So they got a good situation. But let's be clear,
- 0:51Speaker 2: this is Calandria's job, and you know they're they're excited
- 0:54Speaker 2: about what he's going to be. But that room is
- 0:57Speaker 2: in great shape as they get ready to open up
- 0:58Speaker 2: fall camp when players report on Tuesday.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We kind of for I forgot about TJ Latif, but
- 1:05Speaker 1: coach said that he's he's bigger, stronger, and it seemed
- 1:10Speaker 1: pretty high on him yesterday. It's always good to have depth.
- 1:13Speaker 1: What about the running back position, what did coach reveal
- 1:16Speaker 1: about that yesterday?
- 1:18Speaker 2: Well, we know this that Mikai Nelson is not going
- 1:22Speaker 2: to be internally suspended, and you know, with no charges
- 1:26Speaker 2: being filed from his July situation and he was key
- 1:29Speaker 2: West Florida, you know that there's there's nothing more from
- 1:33Speaker 2: the Nebraska and that's going to happen there. So he's
- 1:36Speaker 2: back with the program. He'll be in fall camp, et cetera.
- 1:39Speaker 2: They added Tyke Hayes, the Penn State running back, and
- 1:43Speaker 2: Matt Ruhle said he told his GM Pat Stewart, we
- 1:46Speaker 2: were in the NFL right now, we'd be out getting
- 1:49Speaker 2: a running back, and they kind of use the same mindset, like, hey,
- 1:52Speaker 2: we would take this guy no matter what because we
- 1:55Speaker 2: need a back, and it just made sense. But you know,
- 1:58Speaker 2: they've got three or four guys there as well, with
- 2:01Speaker 2: Jamal Rule and Isaamh Mosey as well, that are all
- 2:05Speaker 2: going to contend, and they would like to have really
- 2:08Speaker 2: three playing games. One kind of more of a featured back,
- 2:11Speaker 2: one a secondary back, and then kind of a multiple
- 2:14Speaker 2: guy that can be a receiving type third down back.
- 2:17Speaker 1: What about the overall tone from coach rule He in
- 2:22Speaker 1: his opening statement seemed to suggest, Hey, we're moving in
- 2:25Speaker 1: the right direction. Remember what we were dealing with before
- 2:29Speaker 1: I got here, These players got here, the rest of
- 2:32Speaker 1: this coaching staff got here. We hadn't won a bowl game.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Now we're going to bowl games. We're winning occasionally bowl
- 2:38Speaker 1: games where we didn't come here to be seven and six,
- 2:41Speaker 1: But we are moving in the right direction. We realize
- 2:44Speaker 1: that's not good enough. That was kind of the tone
- 2:46Speaker 1: that I got from coach. What did you get?
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's definitely been the message. And you know, the
- 2:52Speaker 2: ending of last season, you know, the way they lost
- 2:55Speaker 2: to Isowa, the way they lost to Penn State, the
- 2:57Speaker 2: way they lost the Utah that really soured in any
- 3:01Speaker 2: progress that's maybe made at times a year ago, just
- 3:04Speaker 2: to get the doors blown off you by three opponents,
- 3:07Speaker 2: especially on defense at the line of scrimmage. And and
- 3:10Speaker 2: everyone knows that the way it ended last year was
- 3:13Speaker 2: not acceptable. But I think he still likes where this
- 3:17Speaker 2: team is at, the additions they've brought in and and
- 3:20Speaker 2: and what they've done, and the big X factor is
- 3:23Speaker 2: going to be quarterback and and what they can get
- 3:25Speaker 2: out of Callandria now moving forward, and the offensive line
- 3:28Speaker 2: upgrades they made in the portal, and then how the
- 3:31Speaker 2: scheme comes together under Robo Larich, and and and what
- 3:35Speaker 2: he's going to bring to the table because they've got
- 3:38Speaker 2: to get this defense figured out rolling and they have
- 3:40Speaker 2: a schedule early on. I think that allows for some
- 3:43Speaker 2: of those things, so they've got to take advantage of
- 3:45Speaker 2: that now as they move forward in this year.
- 3:47Speaker 1: What else did you hear from coach or not here
- 3:50Speaker 1: from coach yesterday that you want to address?
- 3:52Speaker 2: Sean, Well, we talked to Troy Danon too, so I
- 3:55Speaker 2: want to make sure I get that on the air.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I had about a ten minute interview with Troy, and
- 4:01Speaker 2: you know, the the Save College Sports bill that is,
- 4:05Speaker 2: you know, being talked about. You know, it doesn't look
- 4:09Speaker 2: like they're going to be able to get that vote in.
- 4:10Speaker 2: It's still could happen before the recess, but I know
- 4:13Speaker 2: he's really excited about just some of the things he
- 4:17Speaker 2: could do, Like they're going to raise what Nebraska can
- 4:21Speaker 2: pay the athletes, where there could be twenty one million
- 4:24Speaker 2: for recruiting, twenty million for player retention and five million
- 4:28Speaker 2: for women's sports, and that actually really reflects probably what
- 4:31Speaker 2: Nebraska is paying. But they have to use the you know,
- 4:35Speaker 2: the different ways to do it with the multimedia deals
- 4:37Speaker 2: and other things. So they're trying to make some changes
- 4:41Speaker 2: to this bill and hopefully I know that goes through.
- 4:46Speaker 2: So yeah, and then you know, the basketball ticket receipt
- 4:49Speaker 2: was something we discussed because that was a big hot
- 4:51Speaker 2: topic this last week. They're not going to do that
- 4:54Speaker 2: until twenty twenty nine. Now, it was going to happen
- 4:57Speaker 2: in twenty twenty seven, and he told media and they
- 5:01Speaker 2: never intended to have that basketball ticket receipt. It was
- 5:05Speaker 2: always going to be volleyball, then football, and then later
- 5:07Speaker 2: on basketball. So they pulled that back. But the stadium
- 5:12Speaker 2: receipt for football is going to be pretty intense, and
- 5:15Speaker 2: they know that there's going to be so much going
- 5:17Speaker 2: on here in the next couple of years for the fans.
- 5:20Speaker 2: And the volleyball one was very intense. This football one,
- 5:22Speaker 2: I think is going to be at a whole different level.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Was just trying to manage all the ticket holders and
- 5:28Speaker 2: you're talking about over sixty thousand season ticket holders for Nebraskat.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Football right, Yeah, that's certainly gotten a lot of attention.
- 5:35Speaker 1: The reseating of season ticket holders and some of these
- 5:40Speaker 1: other sports. We also learned, Yeah, go ahead, Sean.
- 5:43Speaker 2: It's like trying to find new seats for the whole
- 5:45Speaker 2: city of Belbie. It will be an easy job.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Moved down, moved down a little bit real quickly, Sean.
- 5:52Speaker 1: We also learned yesterday about I'm on Green saying that
- 5:55Speaker 1: he has Parkinson's disease. Where do you rank I'm in
- 6:01Speaker 1: the great Husker running backs of all time?
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's definitely in that discussion for top five.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Obviously Rogier is at the top of that list, and
- 6:12Speaker 2: then you know Mon Green is kind of in that
- 6:14Speaker 2: next group, and you know Lawrence Phillips with his talent
- 6:17Speaker 2: and where he was drafted. Obviously, Roger Craig now in
- 6:21Speaker 2: the NFL Hall of Fame and what he brought to
- 6:24Speaker 2: the table. Mir Abdullah Rexburg Head were more recent backs.
- 6:27Speaker 2: But I'm on Green, there's no doubt is in the
- 6:30Speaker 2: top five in my opinion of backs that have played
- 6:33Speaker 2: at Nebraska and won a national championship, multiple national championships,
- 6:38Speaker 2: and what he did as a as a freshman when
- 6:40Speaker 2: he was on he came in on that ninety five
- 6:42Speaker 2: seasons and Lawrence Phillips had the situation that year, and
- 6:46Speaker 2: he stepped in beautifully. And he's a great person. I've
- 6:49Speaker 2: known him on and got to known him over the years,
- 6:51Speaker 2: and watched him play in high school. I mean, it's
- 6:53Speaker 2: just tragic to hear that news this past week.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I watched him real close in high school. He was
- 6:59Speaker 1: running all over over our Alston rams that year. So yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 1: we we would wish him the best. He says he's
- 7:05Speaker 1: managing well medication diet, but it was startling for someone
- 7:10Speaker 1: that young, he's not yet fifty to get a diagnosis. Sean,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I'll let you get back to work, have a great week,
- 7:16Speaker 1: and we'll talk next week.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Okay, guys, thank you,
