- 0:00Speaker 1: A Calgary man is fighting back after a one hundred
- 0:03Speaker 1: and twenty five thousand dollars winning fifty to fifty draw
- 0:06Speaker 1: ticket that he purchased was declared worthless.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Curtis Geiger learned earlier this.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Week that a ticket that he bought at the Calgary
- 0:13Speaker 1: Stampede back in July was actually a winner. Now, he
- 0:17Speaker 1: immediately emailed the organization, but he didn't get the response
- 0:20Speaker 1: that he was looking for.
- 0:21Speaker 2: The email said his forty eight hour window to claim
- 0:24Speaker 2: that prize had expired.
- 0:26Speaker 1: In a statement to CBC News, the Calgary Stampede acknowledged
- 0:29Speaker 1: the disappointing situation, but said the forty eight hour claim
- 0:33Speaker 1: period was outlined in a publicly available rules. Geiger says
- 0:37Speaker 1: that he isn't satisfied with that response, and he's looking
- 0:39Speaker 1: to pursue legal recourse. So now we're going to hear
- 0:43Speaker 1: from the man himself. I want to bring in Curtis Geiger,
- 0:45Speaker 1: that winner of the one hundred and twenty five thousand
- 0:48Speaker 1: dollars ticket that you can't be claimed, joining us from Calgary, Curtis,
- 0:52Speaker 1: thanks for your time. Hi, Sarah. Okay, so you found
- 0:57Speaker 1: out on Monday that this was actually a winning ticket
- 1:00Speaker 1: when did you buy this ticket?
- 1:02Speaker 2: The Stampede's been over for a little.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Bit now, Yeah, I've bought the ticket on July eleventh
- 1:07Speaker 3: in the afternoon. I was there with some friends from
- 1:09Speaker 3: out of town. Purchased the ticket at the rodeo. The
- 1:12Speaker 3: following day, I was on a trip to Greece that
- 1:16Speaker 3: I've been planning for quite some time. It's a trip
- 1:19Speaker 3: that I've been always wanting to go on. And I
- 1:22Speaker 3: went to Greece for a few weeks, and when I
- 1:24Speaker 3: came back, I was at work. And this week on Monday,
- 1:28Speaker 3: I was going through some expense accounts for my work
- 1:30Speaker 3: and I had my ticket in my wallet and I
- 1:32Speaker 3: pulled it out and I scanned a QR code and
- 1:36Speaker 3: it took me to the site and that's where I
- 1:38Speaker 3: scrolled down. I looked at the process to claim, the
- 1:43Speaker 3: process claim, how to go through it all. And I
- 1:46Speaker 3: scrolled down and I looked at the July eleventh draw,
- 1:50Speaker 3: and I was looking at the numbers and I compared
- 1:53Speaker 3: it to my ticket and loan behold, the numbers match.
- 1:57Speaker 3: So I was pretty excited.
- 1:58Speaker 4: So I couldn't believe it.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Actually, I brought in a couple. I brought in a
- 2:01Speaker 3: couple co workers to verify that for me.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So can you talk to me about that moment went
- 2:06Speaker 1: through and through your mind when you thought, you know,
- 2:08Speaker 1: you were one hundred and twenty five thousand dollars richer.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I couldn't believe it. I've never really want anything
- 2:13Speaker 3: that baked before. I've played the lotteries many times over
- 2:17Speaker 3: the years and never come close. So it was the
- 2:20Speaker 3: high that I had. The uh, it was it was
- 2:23Speaker 3: going back to like when my kids were born. So
- 2:25Speaker 3: that experience and that over joy was it was, it was.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It was.
- 2:30Speaker 3: It's hard to put into words until you actually have
- 2:32Speaker 3: have it happened to you?
- 2:34Speaker 1: Okay, Now I got to ask you about the low
- 2:36Speaker 1: when you realized or you were told that the window
- 2:38Speaker 1: to claim that prize was only well two days forty
- 2:41Speaker 1: eight hours, and of course you'd been in Greece, you
- 2:43Speaker 1: couldn't have made that claim and you hadn't checked before
- 2:46Speaker 1: you got on that plane.
- 2:47Speaker 2: What went through your mind.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Well, it was It's the ultimate low that you can have, right,
- 2:52Speaker 3: So you know. I sent the email off in the
- 2:56Speaker 3: afternoon and by the time I got home later on
- 2:58Speaker 3: after five o'clock, I received the disappointing email back from
- 3:02Speaker 3: the gentleman from the Stampede.
- 3:04Speaker 4: And yeah, it's your heart drops. It's it's hard to
- 3:09Speaker 4: put into words until it actually happens to you, but
- 3:12Speaker 4: that that ultimate low is I couldn't sleep for the
- 3:16Speaker 4: last couple of days.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I think last night was the first time actually got
- 3:19Speaker 3: to sleep a little bit, because it's it's a lot
- 3:21Speaker 3: weighing on your mind, a lot of things going through
- 3:22Speaker 3: your head.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sorry to hear that.
- 3:26Speaker 1: You know, one hundred and twenty five thousand dollars, there's
- 3:27Speaker 1: probably a lot of you were here thinking, oh, what
- 3:29Speaker 1: would I do with that money? And I'm guessing in
- 3:30Speaker 1: the time that you thought that you you had that money,
- 3:34Speaker 1: you were thinking a lot of things.
- 3:35Speaker 2: What would you have spent it on?
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah, you try, you try not to think through that
- 3:39Speaker 3: because it's sometimes it's too good to be true. But
- 3:42Speaker 3: I've just moved to Calgary a couple of years ago
- 3:44Speaker 3: and I'm still renting, and I was looking forward to
- 3:48Speaker 3: buying a home at the end of the year or
- 3:50Speaker 3: early next year, and I thought this would be a
- 3:52Speaker 3: great down payment for the house. I'm sure my financial
- 3:55Speaker 3: person would also like me to benefit by putting it
- 3:59Speaker 3: into my bench, but then I also have kids and
- 4:02Speaker 3: an eighty five year old mom that I really wanted
- 4:04Speaker 3: to take on a trip.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Curtisis was a fifty to fifty draw.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So the pot, you know, half of it goes to
- 4:10Speaker 1: you know, the Stampede, you know, a nonprofit and the
- 4:13Speaker 1: other half goes to the winner. So I'm assuming at
- 4:16Speaker 1: the moment the one percent of it has gone to
- 4:18Speaker 1: that nonprofit.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Do things are you?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Are you leaving things as they are or what's your
- 4:23Speaker 1: plan moving forward here?
- 4:25Speaker 3: No, So I've I retained a lawyer this morning, so
- 4:29Speaker 3: I'm with the Baker Law Firm, and Roger's gone through
- 4:34Speaker 3: all the situations and explained to me that we have
- 4:36Speaker 3: a very good case. So we decided I'm going to
- 4:38Speaker 3: move forward.
- 4:40Speaker 2: And what is that case?
- 4:41Speaker 1: The fact that it said you may claim within forty
- 4:44Speaker 1: eight hours.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it's hard to get into some of the details
- 4:47Speaker 3: because I it's I'm not allowed to really speak on
- 4:51Speaker 3: everything from there, but basically, the ambiguity of everything that's
- 4:55Speaker 3: on there. The ticket itself mentions nothing on one you
- 5:00Speaker 3: need to claim it, so foll of those combined together
- 5:03Speaker 3: is very confusing, I think for the consumer, the buyer,
- 5:06Speaker 3: the ticket.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Okay, Curtis, Well, there's a lot of people who play
- 5:09Speaker 1: the lottery. You're going to be following your story very closely.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Curtis Geiger, thank you for your time and good luck.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Thank you for having me on your program.
