- 0:00Speaker 1: Could be one of those moments where, well, I've discovered
- 0:04Speaker 1: something this week. You can spend years pretending that you're
- 0:08Speaker 1: a really tough guy. And then it takes one very
- 0:12Speaker 1: small rabbit to bring you undone. Please.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I'm so sorry about Kevin.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Kevin. We've lost Kevin. Hit me harder than I expected. Yeah. Kevin!
- 0:23Speaker 2: Kevin.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Don't make me laugh. It's a tough time in the
- 0:26Speaker 1: barrel household, I've got to say. Especially my wife and daughter.
- 0:30Speaker 1: My daughter got as a support animal, I suppose you'd say,
- 0:33Speaker 1: without any permissions. And my wife had to do all
- 0:35Speaker 1: the work. That normally is what happens around most people's houses,
- 0:37Speaker 1: isn't it?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Kevin was a support rabbit?
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 0:42Speaker 1: They're good. I mean, I never thought I'd be grieving
- 0:46Speaker 1: a rabbit, put it that way.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 0:47Speaker 1: And he's a mini lop or a dwarf lop, if
- 0:49Speaker 1: you know rabbits. Oh, adorable.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Yeah. Now, how long... Was Kevin in the house?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Seven or eight years.
- 0:57Speaker 2: That's a long time.
- 0:58Speaker 3: That's a long time to build up a relationship.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Is that a long life for a rabbit? Or what
- 1:02Speaker 2: is their lifespan?
- 1:03Speaker 1: No, I think around 10 is a long time. Okay.
- 1:05Speaker 1: But it's just, I mean... This is the tough bit,
- 1:08Speaker 1: is that people don't take it seriously.
- 1:11Speaker 2: No, they don't.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I do. Not saying you guys aren't, but it's just,
- 1:15Speaker 1: because when a dog or a cat passes, then, you know,
- 1:19Speaker 1: there's a lot of sympathy around.
- 1:20Speaker 2: People totally understand a dog.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Because more people are likely to have a cat or
- 1:26Speaker 3: a dog as a pet than they are.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Well, yes. Rabbit. A lot of rabbits out there, little kevvies,
- 1:30Speaker 1: scooting around the kitchen, chasing the dog, twitching the nose
- 1:33Speaker 1: like he's looking for Wi-Fi, you know. Yeah. Anyway. They
- 1:38Speaker 1: nudge you with their nose as well.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Did Kevin get on well with the other animals?
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yeah, beautifully, yeah. He stood up for himself.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Good on him.
- 1:45Speaker 1: But he'd hit you with his nose going, where's the food, Bozo?
- 1:47Speaker 1: Where's the food? Come on, give me some food. So
- 1:50Speaker 1: I was, when, well, mate, if you've got kids in
- 1:53Speaker 1: the car, probably, you know, talk over it a little
- 1:55Speaker 1: bit here. But, and did you reckon you get more
- 1:58Speaker 1: emotional as you get older?
- 2:00Speaker 3: Uh, yes, I think you do.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Do you reckon? Probably.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I reckon since I've turned 50, I've just cried at
- 2:05Speaker 1: the drop of a hat. Whatever happens. You know what
- 2:08Speaker 1: I mean?
- 2:08Speaker 2: I cried an ad sometimes on TV. Really?
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I cried the other day when I watched 70 up
- 2:13Speaker 2: because I'd been watching it for so many years.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Which, which, which person did you cry over? Like, The, the,
- 2:21Speaker 1: the pommy one that went to.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Well, they're all pommy.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah. But you know, the really pommy one or.
- 2:25Speaker 2: The English one. Well, I cried at Neil every, every
- 2:28Speaker 2: time there was a new season, but, uh, yeah, at
- 2:31Speaker 2: least he was still there.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So I had to take him to the vet and
- 2:35Speaker 1: you know, you know, when you go to the vet,
- 2:36Speaker 1: you just know, oh, this could end badly. And you know,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and why am I doing it is mostly what you think. And, um,
- 2:42Speaker 1: cause they, cause you know, you know, rabbits to be
- 2:44Speaker 1: serious for a minute, they actually hide their weakness and
- 2:47Speaker 1: pain because they're In the wild, if they show that,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you know, the birds come from.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Oh, right. They make themselves a target.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yeah. I didn't know that. By the time they're struggling,
- 2:56Speaker 1: they're really struggling. You know what I mean? So I
- 3:00Speaker 1: take it in there and, you know, like he's... The
- 3:02Speaker 1: trip's excruciating just driving there thinking, oh, what if he says,
- 3:05Speaker 1: you know, why am I here? Can I ring my wife?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Is it too late? Or one of the kids can
- 3:09Speaker 1: come down and what if they have to say goodbye?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Do I have to get all the family down and,
- 3:14Speaker 1: you know... It's bloody tough. It's tough. And I know
- 3:18Speaker 1: it can be a little bit.
- 3:19Speaker 2: And it happens to just about all of us.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I know. And you're looking for a miracle. Yeah. But
- 3:24Speaker 1: you know the best thing to do is the kindest thing.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Of course.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And, you know, taking that whole trip. And, you know,
- 3:30Speaker 1: I was amazed. I'm talking to some footy guys about it.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And they go, oh, just be like Justin Longmire. I go,
- 3:35Speaker 1: what are you talking about? And he said, well, Steel
- 3:37Speaker 1: Sidebottom had lost his dog and he needed a day
- 3:40Speaker 1: off at Collingwood. This is when J-Lo was at Collingwood.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And because he's from a farm, it's a different attitude,
- 3:47Speaker 1: isn't it, when it's not a pet? It's more of
- 3:49Speaker 1: a working dog or whatever. Yeah. An employee. And he
- 3:52Speaker 1: basically took a very practical view and said, mate, down
- 3:55Speaker 1: on the farm, they get sick. We just shoot them.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Well, you do see more than your fair share of
- 4:01Speaker 3: death on the farm.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Justin Longmire said that.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah. To steal a side bottom.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But that's a farmer, you know, speaking.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Apparently, that's what happens out there. Yeah. Hmm.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Surely he knows the difference between a farm animal and
- 4:15Speaker 2: a pet.
- 4:17Speaker 1: He does now. He does now. Anyway, so back to Kevi.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Back to Kevi.
- 4:22Speaker 3: A working rabbit.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Kevi was a good rabbit.
- 4:24Speaker 1: He was a good rabbit. He lived a good life.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah. See, that is the thing. He did have a
- 4:29Speaker 2: very good life at the Barrett house.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. And that's the thing about animals. You can't
- 4:34Speaker 1: measure the size of them by what, you know, what
- 4:37Speaker 1: they carve out in your life. And he carved a
- 4:40Speaker 1: big place out of now. So he left a bigger hole.
- 4:42Speaker 1: than I would have imagined. And thank you for taking
- 4:46Speaker 1: it seriously and being my support people. Of course, of course.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You're just holding it in.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I will. And I will raise a glass later today
- 4:55Speaker 2: for Kevin. Because you know I will at any excuse.
- 4:58Speaker 3: It'll be a glass of carrot juice.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Stop it. He held on right to the end.
- 5:05Speaker 1: He couldn't get through. You had that line ready already.
- 5:09Speaker 3: We just found out that our assistant producer, who's like
- 5:11Speaker 3: about 16, loves Michael Bolton.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Oh, everyone's got one.
- 5:17Speaker 1: He may not like it.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Mine's Kenny G.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Kenny G.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Good Lord.
- 5:21Speaker 2: My one I love that other people laugh at.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Billy Cyrus.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Kenny G.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Billy Cyrus had the best mullet. Oh, yeah.
- 5:26Speaker 3: We're not talking about mullets. No, we're not talking about mullets. No,
- 5:29Speaker 3: we're just talking about Kenny G's mullets all over. He
- 5:31Speaker 3: doesn't know who Kenny G is.
- 5:32Speaker 2: He doesn't know who Kenny G is. He might like him.
- 5:34Speaker 2: He knows who.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Michael Bolton is, doesn't he?
- 5:37Speaker 2: I know, I know.
- 5:38Speaker 1: He may change his mind now after I reveal what
- 5:41Speaker 1: Michael Bolton is actually like. Oh!
- 5:43Speaker 3: Oh, here we go.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Gather round.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Now the inside word from Barrow.
- 5:48Speaker 1: This is, you guys would know this story because it's
- 5:50Speaker 1: radio folklore.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Is it?
- 5:52Speaker 1: And I happen to be working at, I can't even
- 5:54Speaker 1: remember what station it was, but there's a bloke by
- 5:55Speaker 1: the name of Gary Shannon.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I've never heard of him.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Do you remember him?
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Well, I'm... I'm guessing it was probably a variation of PMFM.
- 6:06Speaker 1: 6pm maybe? Anyway, we got called out to Parry Field,
- 6:10Speaker 1: you know, the baseball field here in person. Yes. And
- 6:12Speaker 1: so Bolton, Michael Bolton was here and apparently he's a
- 6:15Speaker 1: massive softball fan. Okay. And he takes a softball, custom-made
- 6:19Speaker 1: softball equipment everywhere with him and He always wants to
- 6:22Speaker 1: have a hit. And we thought it was just a
- 6:24Speaker 1: photo shoot. So we turn up. Anyway, he's in his
- 6:26Speaker 1: full-blown gear, dressed up. He's got the mullet looking magnificent.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And he's ready to go. He says, we're playing a game.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And you can imagine Gary, none too happy about the
- 6:35Speaker 1: fact that it's not just a photo shoot, right? I
- 6:38Speaker 1: reckon it got really, really tense such that even his
- 6:43Speaker 1: mind has started getting in there because Gary was poking.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I think he was poking Michael in the chest.
- 6:48Speaker 2: What?
- 6:49Speaker 1: And sledging is.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Couldn't you just say, no, thank you?
- 6:52Speaker 1: No, because I got involved because I started hitting balls
- 6:56Speaker 1: and all this.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Sort of stuff.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. But Gary was getting super aggressive even in
- 7:02Speaker 1: the match, you know, when they hit it away and
- 7:04Speaker 1: they'd run for the slide in and someone tried to
- 7:07Speaker 1: knee somebody. But it was just, it was actually humbling.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But he was so serious about it. I've never heard
- 7:12Speaker 1: this story.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Obviously competitive. I've never heard this.
- 7:15Speaker 1: No.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Bolton is competitive. Obviously, yeah. I've never heard this story.
- 7:18Speaker 1: But you wouldn't have thought that softball would trigger someone,
- 7:21Speaker 1: but he, I mean, triggered Gary, but also.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Was it a Friday?
- 7:25Speaker 1: It was a Friday. After lunch.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Before lunch, maybe.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Before lunch. Well, I mean.
- 7:32Speaker 2: He had lunch to get to.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Gary's not a renowned sportsman.
- 7:36Speaker 2: No, but he does a good lunch.
- 7:37Speaker 1: He didn't take it too well.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Well, he did.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I can tell you, when Bolton started ordering him around,
- 7:41Speaker 1: that was the end of it. Listen, mate, you're in
- 7:42Speaker 1: Australia now, pal. I don't care who you think you are.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Okay. I thought he was going to get knocked out
- 7:48Speaker 1: by the two African-American bouncers. Two really big guys.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Did you sort of muscle in between just to keep
- 7:57Speaker 3: it apart, boys?
- 7:57Speaker 1: I thought it was the funniest thing I've ever seen.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I couldn't wait to tell the boys back at the club.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Let them swing.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Guess what happened today?
- 8:04Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Just walk. Michael Bolton.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Just walk the base.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Just walk. Don't slip. Don't slip. My phone lit up.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I thought it was Gary Shannon. No, it's Ian Blackley.
- 8:16Speaker 2: He remembers.
- 8:16Speaker 1: He remembers. Black is nice. He knows all. Oh, wow.
- 8:23Speaker 3: There you go.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I'll add a bit more of that next week. I'll
- 8:25Speaker 1: give you a bit more of an insight. I feel
- 8:27Speaker 1: like there's more to the story.
- 8:30Speaker 3: The dark side of Michael Bolton.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I know. I tell you, he takes softball very, very seriously.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Which is not a great thing.
