- 0:05Hope everybody is having a good week.
- 0:09Surprise, I'm back again. See, Andrew feigned being sick
- 0:16on Sunday, so he didn't have to listen to me preach.
- 0:20Because of that, Brent asked me to teach class tonight.
- 0:23No, I don't think that was the reason.
- 0:26No. Brent wound up double booking
- 0:29himself, not remembering that he was supposed to be teaching in
- 0:32here tonight. He obligated himself to teach
- 0:35the kids or the teenagers on how to prepare a topical sermon this
- 0:40evening. So he's a cross in Bratton Hall
- 0:43educating them on sermon preparation and delivery.
- 0:46And you're stuck with me. So what we're going to do
- 0:50tonight is we are going to pick up in Hebrews chapter 12 and
- 0:55we're going to do our best to scoot our way through the last
- 0:59two chapters of the book of Hebrews this evening.
- 1:04And obviously with that being our goal, we're not going to
- 1:08spend a lot of time in any one particular place tonight.
- 1:14But there's there's a lot of things for us to consider,
- 1:19especially here in chapter 12, which is where we're going to
- 1:23spend the bulk of our time. But we are going to try to get
- 1:25through some things in chapter 13 as well.
- 1:29For those of you that were not in the Sunday morning class
- 1:31because you had other obligations and were in other
- 1:34places, you have my profound apologies.
- 1:36I'm not going to recap the entire 1st 11 chapters of the
- 1:40Book of Hebrews. However, suffice it to say, Book
- 1:44of Hebrews being written to Jewish Christians is intended
- 1:49for the purpose of showing them why they can't quit, they can't
- 1:55give up, they can't try to go back under the old law and try
- 1:58to live under that because that was done away with the cross and
- 2:02with the coming of Christ. And, and that's been the
- 2:05emphasis of chapters 9 and 10. Our last class we started at the
- 2:09end of chapter 10 and went all the way through the 1st 2 verses
- 2:14of chapter 12 and the entire point of Chapter 11 as well as
- 2:20as it stated at the end of chapter 10 and into the start of
- 2:23chapter 12 is look at all of the examples.
- 2:27Look at all of those who lived and died by faith in God and who
- 2:35were completely devoted to being what God wanted them to be and
- 2:39doing what God wanted them to do, no matter the cost.
- 2:43He goes back at the beginning or at the end of chapter 10, in
- 2:48chapter 10 and verse #36 he says for you have need of endurance.
- 2:55And that's really the, the focal statement that leads into
- 2:59Chapter 11. You have need of endurance so
- 3:03that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the
- 3:07promise. And then he's going to talk to
- 3:09them in Chapter 11 about what faith is and how it is
- 3:12illustrated. And in the end of Chapter 11, he
- 3:15says, And all these, having obtained a good testimony
- 3:19through faith, did not receive the promise.
- 3:21God having provided something better for us, that they should
- 3:25not be made perfect apart from us.
- 3:28Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud
- 3:32of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which
- 3:36so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race
- 3:40that is set before us. Looking unto Jesus, the author
- 3:44and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before
- 3:48Him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat
- 3:52down at the right hand of the throne of God.
- 3:59Even when you look at all of these other individuals of
- 4:02faith, which He he says it's not the type, as we talked about a
- 4:08couple weeks ago, where they're being placed on a pedestal of
- 4:11these are the best of the best. And you can never be like them.
- 4:14They they are the Hall of Fame and nobody else is going to be
- 4:20able to match their faith. That's not the point at all.
- 4:24Instead, the point is, these are people of faith.
- 4:28These are people who endured great trials and tribulations.
- 4:31They overcame a great deal, and their faith stood strong.
- 4:36And you can be just like them. But even beyond all of that,
- 4:42Chapter 12 begins with let us lay aside every weight, all the
- 4:49struggles, all the fear, all the doubting, and the sin which so
- 4:55easily ensnares us. And let us run with endurance
- 4:59the race that is set before us by looking to Jesus, the author
- 5:03and finisher of our faith. Because He illustrated the
- 5:09devotion, the love, the compassion and the endurance
- 5:15that we need to have in our service to Him in what He was
- 5:20willing to do for us. As we consider chapter 12, He's
- 5:27going to move from this and, and, and he's going to have a
- 5:30couple of other statements in, in verses 3 and 4, but he's
- 5:36going to move from this into a discussion of discipline.
- 5:41And we'll see why in just a couple moments.
- 5:43But let me show you how he follows up the statements of the
- 5:461st 2 verses. In verse three He says, For
- 5:49consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against
- 5:54himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.
- 6:00You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.
- 6:08He says, Remember who it was that endured such hostility from
- 6:14sinners against himself. Who was that Christ?
- 6:19All right, our Lord who endured all of these things, and yet he
- 6:25still saw it through to the end. He saw it through to its
- 6:30conclusion. He says you have to remember,
- 6:37you know, it's easy for us to forget what somebody else has
- 6:42done on our behalf when we start only looking at ourselves,
- 6:46right? We start looking at what we're
- 6:48going through, what we see, what we endure, what we're struggling
- 6:52with, and we don't pay attention to what anybody else is doing
- 6:56around us. So many times it's the case that
- 7:00even while we're going through those struggles and those
- 7:02trials, there's usually somebody else who's right there.
- 7:06And they're trying to help us. They're trying to help move us
- 7:09the right direction. They're trying to encourage us
- 7:12and to strengthen us. But sometimes we're just too
- 7:15enveloped in ourselves to see it.
- 7:17And then we'll come around in our pouty face and our broken
- 7:22heart saying I'm having to do this all by myself, when the
- 7:28reality is there have been people there trying to help us
- 7:31all along. The writer here is trying to
- 7:39encourage these Christians not to quit.
- 7:44And he says, remember who you serve, and what he has already
- 7:47done for you, what he has already endured from you, lest
- 7:52you become weary and discouraged in your souls because you have
- 7:57not yet resisted to bloodshed. There were some that had.
- 8:05There were some that had lost their lives, that had had their
- 8:08blood shed for the cause of Christ.
- 8:11These to whom this was written had not yet had that happen.
- 8:15You've not had to endure to that cost yet, but now He tells them
- 8:23something else they need to remember.
- 8:27As you come into verse 5, He says, and you have forgotten the
- 8:31exhortation which speaks to you as to sons.
- 8:35My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be
- 8:39discouraged when you are rebuked by Him for whom the Lord loves.
- 8:43He chastens and scourges every son whom He receives.
- 8:50Verses 5 and 6 are quote from Proverbs chapter 3, verses 11
- 8:55and 12. But here the speaker in Hebrews
- 9:00is going to use it as a reminder of what they've forgotten and
- 9:06what so many times we forget. Don't you love being able to
- 9:12call God our Father and to have the relationship and to be able
- 9:17to say that we are children of God?
- 9:23That's a special relationship. It's a powerful relationship and
- 9:29it helps us to endure a lot of things.
- 9:34But you know, that relationship also carries with it a set of
- 9:38responsibilities. When I look to God, and I speak
- 9:44of God as being my father, there's something else that's
- 9:48associated with that, right? It's the fact that I'm a child
- 9:53of him. Well, guess what?
- 9:57A parent has authority over a child, don't they?
- 10:01They have a responsibility over the child to prepare, to train,
- 10:08to teach, to admonish, to rebuke, to chasten discipline
- 10:18the child. What is the book of Hebrews?
- 10:26It's a book of discipline. Now.
- 10:29It's not beating them over the head with it necessarily, but it
- 10:35is certainly making a strong case for what God wants them to
- 10:39do and why God wants them to do it.
- 10:42And there have been a lot of hard statements that have been
- 10:46made over the course of the book of Hebrews to this point.
- 10:51And he says you have forgotten the exhortation.
- 10:55My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be
- 10:58discouraged when you are rebuked by Him for whom the Lord loves.
- 11:04He chastens and scourges every son whom he receives.
- 11:10We've all seen the children who, when they're told by their
- 11:16parents, know, or when they're given orders by their parents as
- 11:22to what it is that they're supposed to do, or worse yet,
- 11:25when they're told not to do something that they want to do.
- 11:32Respond with you don't love me, why don't you like me?
- 11:43Doesn't have anything to do with that, does it?
- 11:47It's about trying to teach and to train and remind you of
- 11:50what's best for you. Do not despise the chastening of
- 11:57the Lord. We often respond like that
- 12:00little child when it comes to God telling us what to do and
- 12:04what not to do. You know why?
- 12:08Because we want to do what we want to do.
- 12:11Sounds a lot like the three-year old, doesn't it?
- 12:15And when I don't get my way, I'm not happy.
- 12:23But if God didn't love you, He wouldn't care what you were
- 12:27doing. And He certainly wouldn't be
- 12:32trying to do what was best for you.
- 12:35Whom the Lord loves, He chastens, and scourges every son
- 12:38whom he receives. Verse 7.
- 12:40He says, if you endure chastening, God deals with you
- 12:43as with sons. For what son is there whom a
- 12:47father does not chasten? But if you are without
- 12:50chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are
- 12:54illegitimate, and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human
- 12:58fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect.
- 13:03Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father
- 13:05of spirits, and live? For they indeed for a few days
- 13:09chastened us, as seemed best to them, but He for our profit,
- 13:14that we may be partakers of His Holiness.
- 13:18Now, no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but
- 13:21painful nevertheless afterward. It yields the peaceable fruit of
- 13:26righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
- 13:34Who likes being trained? I, I did not ever go into the
- 13:41military, but I have a lot of friends and those that I have
- 13:47been associated with over the years that have.
- 13:51And if there's one thing that has been universally stated, it
- 13:56was how much they absolutely loved and would go back through
- 14:01again. Boot camp.
- 14:04Everybody loves boot camp. I don't know who you talk to.
- 14:11Nobody likes training. As a matter of fact, you find
- 14:16that one oddball every once in a while that absolutely loves
- 14:20training and the only thing everybody else can do is laugh
- 14:23because it doesn't make sense. And yet at the same time, as
- 14:32Christians, it requires training, and just as much on
- 14:40the spiritual side as it is on the physical side.
- 14:43It hurts when you're going through that training.
- 14:49It hurts when you're training your heart what to focus on.
- 14:56It hurts when you're training your spirit on what it is that
- 15:00is acceptable and what it is that's not acceptable.
- 15:06It hurts when you're training your conscience not to lash out
- 15:10at every little thing the way that you used to.
- 15:15It's not easy, it is painful, but nevertheless, afterwards he
- 15:22says it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those
- 15:26who have been trained by it. He's reminding these Christians
- 15:34of the importance of listening and actually letting it sink
- 15:41into your heart. Because there's a lot of people
- 15:44that will hear the words of God and they'll go in one ear and
- 15:47out the other, and they'll never actually have an impact on their
- 15:50lives. But if we're truly going to be
- 15:55the children of God, that means we have to go through the pain
- 15:58of hearing that we're wrong and being willing to do something
- 16:02about it, being willing to work on it and to struggle through
- 16:07it, He says, Therefore, because of that, verse 12, strengthen
- 16:13the hands which hang down and the feeble knees and make
- 16:17straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be
- 16:21dislocated, but rather be healed.
- 16:28What's he saying when he talks about strengthen the hands,
- 16:35which hang down in the feeble knees and make straight paths
- 16:39for your feet? Have you ever seen somebody who
- 16:48has been running and running and running and they've given it
- 16:58everything that they've got and they've just about reached that
- 17:04point of collapse? I mean, everything's hanging
- 17:09down here. The knees are getting wobbly.
- 17:15You just can tell by looking at them.
- 17:18They're done. There's not many steps left to
- 17:22take. That's the picture that he
- 17:27describes in verses 12 and 13. He says, strengthen the hands,
- 17:32which hang down in the feeble knees, and make straight paths
- 17:35for your feet, so that what is lame may not be notice, may not
- 17:41be dislocated. In other words, stop and patch
- 17:45yourself up so that you can keep on going.
- 17:53Don't get to the point where you're broke down, where it
- 17:56doesn't work anymore, where it's dislocated, but instead be
- 18:00healed. We're not talking about some
- 18:07miraculous healing of Jesus where he just says go your way,
- 18:16but rather this is going through the process of healing and it's
- 18:21going to take time and it's going to take work and it's
- 18:23going to take effort, but it can be done.
- 18:29But you've got to be willing to put the focus in and not break,
- 18:36but rather be healed. He tells them in verse 14.
- 18:41Pursue peace with all people and holiness without which no one
- 18:46will see the Lord, looking carefully lest anyone fall short
- 18:50of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up
- 18:55cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.
- 18:59Lest there be any Fordicator or profane person like Esau, who
- 19:03for one morsel of food sold his birthright.
- 19:06For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the
- 19:09blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for
- 19:13repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.
- 19:19Don't be like Esau. Don't give up what you got.
- 19:25Because just like Esau, if you give up what you got now, when
- 19:30the time comes, when you realize everything you've given up, you
- 19:33won't be able to get it back. You know why?
- 19:38Because when are you going to realize what you gave up?
- 19:43After it's too late. When you're standing before God
- 19:46on the day of judgement. Too late to buy it back then,
- 19:54just like it was too late for Esau after the blessings had
- 19:57already been given and the the the inheritance of the first
- 20:01born had every already been passed over, he said.
- 20:05Don't be like Esau. Don't be willing to sell
- 20:10something that is so valuable for something that is so little,
- 20:15for you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and
- 20:20that burned with fire. And the blackness and darkness
- 20:24and Tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words,
- 20:29so that those who heard it begged that the word should not
- 20:32be spoken to them anymore. What's he talking about?
- 20:39Mount Sinai, Exodus chapters 19 and 20.
- 20:44You realize Exodus chapter 20 is one of the few locations where
- 20:48all of Israel actually heard the voice of God speak.
- 20:53Those 10 commandments were given not by Moses to the people, but
- 20:57by the voice of God himself. And you know what the people
- 21:01said after God was finished speaking?
- 21:03We don't want to hear anymore Moses.
- 21:06You talk to us because it scared him to death.
- 21:14They did not want to hear the voice of God anymore.
- 21:21Writer of Hebrews says you haven't come to the mountain
- 21:24yet. For they verse 20 could not
- 21:29endure what was commanded. And if so much as a beast
- 21:32touches the mountain, it should be stoned or shot with an arrow.
- 21:36That is a quote from Exodus 19 verses 12 and 13.
- 21:40And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, I am
- 21:44exceedingly afraid and trembling.
- 21:47That's not the mountain you've come to, but you have come to
- 21:53the Mount Zion verse 22 and to the city of the living God, the
- 21:58heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels,
- 22:02to the General Assembly and Church of the first born who are
- 22:05registered in heaven. To God, the judge of all to the
- 22:09spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus, the mediator
- 22:13of the new covenant and the blood and to the blood of
- 22:17sprinkling. That speaks better than that of
- 22:19Abel. No, you didn't go to that
- 22:22mountain. You went to this mountain.
- 22:32We talked about on Sunday the the mentality of being in the
- 22:36throne, being before the throne of God when we come together to
- 22:41worship. That's the picture that he
- 22:44paints here, he says. That's the mountain you came to.
- 22:48You came to Mount Zion. You came to the city of the
- 22:53living God. You came to the heavenly
- 22:56Jerusalem. You came to an innumerable
- 22:58company of angels. You came to the General Assembly
- 23:03and Church of the first born who were registered in heaven.
- 23:06You came to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of men made
- 23:13perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new Covenant, and to the
- 23:18blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
- 23:21So which one is greater? Mount Sinai terrified Israel.
- 23:30You remember the statement over in chapter 10 verse 31.
- 23:36It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living
- 23:40God. You didn't go to that mountain,
- 23:45you came to this mountain. He continues in verse 25.
- 23:49And he says, See that you do not refuse him who speaks.
- 23:54For if they did not escape, who refused him who spoke on earth?
- 23:59Much more shall we not escape if we turn away from him who speaks
- 24:04from heaven? Whose voice then shook the
- 24:07earth? But now he has promised, saying.
- 24:10Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven,
- 24:14which is a quote from Haggai. 26 Now this yet once more indicates
- 24:19the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of those
- 24:23things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken
- 24:27may remain. Therefore, since we are
- 24:30receiving a Kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace by
- 24:36which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and
- 24:40godly fear, for our God is a consuming fire.
- 24:51You're talking about going back under the Old Testament or
- 24:55trying to going back to the Law of Moses.
- 25:01Guess what? It won't work.
- 25:05And the giving of the Law Moses terrified those who heard it who
- 25:12were present when it began to be delivered.
- 25:18You've come to Mount Zion, so see that you do not refuse him
- 25:23who speaks, because if you thought it was bad for them,
- 25:29think about where you are. Think about his response to you.
- 25:37If we turn away from Him, we need to be those who cannot be
- 25:49moved. And so he says verse 28, Let us
- 25:54have grace by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence
- 26:01and godly fear. There are so many things that we
- 26:10should learn from the Old Testament, and to be honest, we
- 26:13spent far too little time studying the Old Testament for
- 26:16the most part. But the very first thing that we
- 26:23should be learning from the Old Testament is that number one,
- 26:27there is a God who is responsible for my existence and
- 26:31#2 He is worthy of my reverence and my fear over and over again.
- 26:40That is the message that God proclaims throughout the Old
- 26:44Testament. But you know, it's not just 1st
- 26:49century Jewish Christians who were fighting this battle over
- 26:52whether or not to go back under the Old Testament law.
- 26:55We've still got folks today who would much prefer the Old
- 26:59Testament law than the New Testament law.
- 27:04They spend all kinds of time trying to convince us to uphold
- 27:09the statutes and the ideologies of the Old Testament.
- 27:16It's where we are forced to remember the book of Hebrews and
- 27:22the fact that the Old Testament was what God intended it to be.
- 27:29It fulfilled the purpose that God intended it to fulfill, but
- 27:32it was never intended to be the law for us.
- 27:39Our law is the law of Christ. Our law is the law that was
- 27:46bought by the blood of our Savior.
- 27:50But it is just as important for us to be faithful to the law
- 27:57under which we live as it was for those under the old law to
- 28:01be faithful to the law under which they lived.
- 28:08As you come into chapter 13, we've got about 10 minutes left.
- 28:11We're going to try to get through as much of chapter 13 as
- 28:14we can. There have been some that have
- 28:19questioned, you know, we've talked about it throughout our
- 28:22study of Hebrews, that much of Hebrews reads and presents
- 28:25itself like a sermon. As a matter of fact, it it reads
- 28:29quote UN quote very differently when spoken orally as opposed to
- 28:33just being read because the language is not the way you
- 28:37would normally see it for written word is instead spoken
- 28:41word in in the in the way that it's presented.
- 28:46There are some who have come to the conclusion that the actual
- 28:49sermon probably ended at the end of chapter 12.
- 28:52I don't know whether that is the case or not, but as you come to
- 28:56chapter 13, there's several closing thoughts that are going
- 29:00to be brought in by the writer of the book of Hebrews, and
- 29:07there's going to be several quick rapid fire bullet points
- 29:10and then some finishing admonitions.
- 29:15So as you come into chapter 13, on the heels of talking about
- 29:20the importance of serving God acceptably with reverence and
- 29:23godly fear, he says, let brotherly love continue.
- 29:29Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some
- 29:33have unwittingly entertained angels.
- 29:35Remember the prisoners as if chained with them, those who are
- 29:39mistreated, since you yourselves are in the body also.
- 29:44Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled, but
- 29:48fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
- 29:51Let your conduct be without covetousness.
- 29:55Be content with such things as you have, for He Himself has
- 29:59said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.
- 30:02So we may boldly say, the Lord is my helper.
- 30:06I will not fear. What can man do to me?
- 30:11Remember those who have rule over you, who have spoken the
- 30:14word of God to you, whose faith follow considering the outcome
- 30:20of their conduct. Jesus Christ is the same
- 30:23yesterday, today and forever. Do not be carried about with
- 30:27various and strange doctrines, for it is good that the heart be
- 30:30established by grace, not with foods which have not profited
- 30:35those who have been occupied with them.
- 30:39In these first 9 verses he's going to hit a whole bunch of
- 30:41things. You've got the the importance of
- 30:44letting brotherly love continue, not forgetting to entertain
- 30:47strangers, remembering those who are prisoners, and these are the
- 30:52idea here is prisoners for the cause of Christ, as if chained
- 30:56with them that marriage is honorable.
- 31:02Let your conduct be without covetousness.
- 31:05Be content with such things as you have.
- 31:08Remember those who rule over you, and do not be carried about
- 31:14with various and strange doctrines.
- 31:22All of these things make up the core of who we are and how we
- 31:27act and what we do as Christians, do they not?
- 31:30The importance of brotherly love, watching out for one
- 31:34another. The importance of not forgetting
- 31:37to entertain strangers. In other words, we're not just
- 31:41worried about those we know, those who are a part of our
- 31:43circle already, remembering those who have been mistreated,
- 31:51those who are struggling, remembering our commitments and
- 32:00our oaths in marriage and not defiling that which God has
- 32:10created, letting our conduct be without covetousness, being
- 32:16content with what we have. Sometimes that's not just about
- 32:23the physical things, is it? Sometimes we get covetous about
- 32:31what those before us had or about the opportunities that
- 32:36were presented to them. And I think in some ways that's
- 32:41what he's talking about here. When it comes to these Jewish
- 32:44Christians, they miss the old days for some of them.
- 32:52For others, they just want it to be like it used to be.
- 33:04Be content with such things as you have.
- 33:07For he himself said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.
- 33:11That's Joshua chapter one verse 5.
- 33:15So we may boldly say, the Lord is my helper.
- 33:18I will not fear. What can man do to me?
- 33:21That's Psalm 118, verse 6. Verse 8 talks about Jesus Christ
- 33:32as the same yesterday, today, and forever.
- 33:36What does that mean in the context of what he's talking
- 33:39about here at the end of the book of Hebrews?
- 33:43Is the Jesus that they serve now the same Jesus that they began
- 33:47to serve when they first became Christians?
- 33:51Yes, he is. Is he ever going to change who
- 33:57he is, what his expectations are, what he has done or is
- 34:05going to do for us? Nope.
- 34:09All of that remains the same. It's not going to change.
- 34:14It's persistent. It is consistent, so do not be
- 34:20carried about with various and strange doctrines.
- 34:30For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with
- 34:35foods which have not profited those that have been occupied
- 34:38with them. The idea of those who have not
- 34:43profited from the foods with which they have been occupied is
- 34:51the idea of the people that have been eating from these various
- 34:54and strange doctrines. Guess what?
- 34:57They're never filled. They're never content.
- 35:01You always got to go on to something else.
- 35:03You've always got to go a little bit further.
- 35:05You've always got to go a little bit more.
- 35:12Don't get wrapped up in that. Understand the truth.
- 35:17He's going to follow it up in verse 10, he says we have an
- 35:21altar from which those who serve the Tabernacle have no right to
- 35:25eat. Going back again to those who
- 35:28try to follow the old covenant for the bodies of those animals
- 35:33whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for
- 35:36sin or burned outside the camp. Therefore Jesus also, that He
- 35:41might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside
- 35:45the gate. Therefore let us go forth
- 35:48outside the camp, bearing His reproach.
- 35:51For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to
- 35:55come. Therefore by Him let us
- 35:58continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the
- 36:03fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
- 36:06But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such
- 36:10sacrifices God is well pleased. Obey those who rule over you and
- 36:15be submissive, for they watch out for your souls.
- 36:18As those who must give account, let them do so with joy and not
- 36:23with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
- 36:31In verse 13, He says, Therefore, let us go forth to him outside
- 36:34the camp bearing His reproach. As a Christian, you're never
- 36:43going to fit in, and that's the point.
- 36:50It's never going to match what the rest of the world is doing
- 36:53and what the rest of the world wants and what the rest of the
- 36:55world is looking for. You've got to be content with
- 37:01that. As a matter of fact, you should
- 37:06be thankful for that. We have here no continuing city,
- 37:12he says verse 14. But we seek the one that is to
- 37:14come. Therefore, let us continually
- 37:20offer the sacrifice of praise to God.
- 37:24Obey those who rule over you. Here's a statement pertaining to
- 37:28elders specifically. Obey those who rule over you and
- 37:32be submissive, for they watch out for your souls.
- 37:34As those who must give account, let them do so with joy and not
- 37:40with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
- 37:47He closes by saying, Pray for us, for we are confident that we
- 37:51have a good conscience in all things, desiring to live
- 37:54honorably. But I especially urge you to do
- 37:58this, that I may be restored to you the sooner.
- 38:01Now may the God of peace, who brought up our Lord Jesus from
- 38:05the dead, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of
- 38:09the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work,
- 38:13to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His
- 38:17sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.
- 38:21Amen. And I appeal to you, brethren,
- 38:24bear with the word of exhortation, for I have written
- 38:27to you in few words. Know that our brother Timothy
- 38:31has been set free, and who with whom?
- 38:34I shall see you if he comes shortly.
- 38:37Greet all those who rule over you and all the Saints, those
- 38:42from Italy. Greet you.
- 38:44Grace be with you all. Amen.
- 38:52I find the confidence that is declared in the final statements
- 39:02refreshing in the face of everything that has been
- 39:05discussed in the book of Hebrews.
- 39:08He says, may the God of peace, verse 20, who brought up our
- 39:17Lord Jesus from the dead, make you complete in every good work
- 39:23to do his will working in you what is well pleasing in his
- 39:26sight through Jesus Christ. That's the desire, that's the
- 39:32goal, and that's what God is willing and able to do.
- 39:39It only requires one thing. It only required one thing from
- 39:44them. It only requires one thing from
- 39:45us. You know what that is?
- 39:49Our obedience, our willingness to be faithful to Him.
- 39:57We said that the great question of the book of Hebrews is, is
- 40:04Jesus enough? The answer from the writer.
- 40:09Is an unequivocal yes. Thank you so much for your
- 40:13attention. Thank you so much for your kind
- 40:15comments as through our study of Hebrews and hopefully this helps
- 40:20put a little bit of the icing on the cake.
