- justin: welcome back to Popcorn and Pals, the podcast where we talk about all sorts of movies good and bad, and we give you our completely unqualified takes on them. He's Zack and I'm Justin, and today we're continuing our Halloween movie month with a nineteen eighty-four comedy that'll make you think that there's something strange in your neighborhood. It's Ghostbusters. But Zack, I think you need to introduce our guests for the episode. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, you know, this week, special guests. We figured Ghostbusters too big of a movie for just you and me to handle, right? You know. So we brought in the experts on horror and Halloween. justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: Our our wives, right? So my wife Carly and your wife Hannah. Do you guys wanna introduce yourself, say hi? Hey. We justin: Hi. Zach Wheeler: gotta get accustomed to your voices, okay. So I'm gonna go Carly, then you say hi. Hey, hi. And then you gotta say Hannah and then you say hi. justin: Hi. Zach Wheeler: See wow, look at this, it's already flowing naturally. I feel really comfortable. What a pod going here. justin: Mm. Yes. Incredible. Everyone is here in accordance with their own free will. Nobody's being forced to be here, right Zach? You you came off a little bit forcey there. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. No, so okay, alright. Sorry. Well sh shut up. So justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: one of my like the reason like I tried to get you guys on or like we tried to get my brother on earlier and then he got sick and he's he's always gonna have an excuse, I feel like. But th one of the reasons I w I my idea when starting this podcast was not only because I want to talk about movies, not only because I wanna hang out with Justin, whatever whatever, right? But it was also like there's something about like Capturing a moment in your life, like your personality, your character, the posterity of being a mid thirties, you know, person with young kids that we'll just never be again. And there was something about capturing that that I really found like intriguing about the podcast. And so would I like to accompany that, I like I want you guys to be on the podcast as much as possible, my brother on the podcast, like capture as many people that And then that way one day, you know, I who knows? Our kids may never listen to this, they might hate and be you know, whatever, you're the worst parents we've ever had and like Yeah, right. But I mean, but like justin: Your kids are never gonna listen to the sack. Zach Wheeler: but you know, they might not listen to it when they're seventeen. They might not listen to it when they're twenty. But maybe when they're forty and I'm dead, they'll be like, Huh, well, it might be worth it. justin: Duh. Wow. Zach Wheeler: You know, maybe we'll go check out our dad. We miss our dad. I think it's nice because justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: you know, it's like the same thing with like our family photos, where I'm the one that's always taking the pictures and it's just the three of you because you never take any pictures. Candid photos. like Hannah, you know what mean? Yeah, you know what I mean? So it's justin: we should unpack that later. Yeah, we should unpack that. Zach Wheeler: like we gotta show up somehow. So you might as well get us on least like justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: one pod. So my my point is like you guys are real and now you are captured for all of time on a podcast that gets listened to by forty people. So Okay. justin: fifty two. I shocked you don't know your own numbers. Also I hope your life's expectancy is a little longer than what you projected, but we can also unpack that later. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, I know. I'm like forty feels a little soon, like the way I drink, who knows, you know? yeah. But anyway, so yeah, that was my my main reason. Yeah, that was justin: Well yeah. Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: that that one made me No, yeah, no, this is not you guys are not the W Let's talk about let's start over, right? Okay, you guys, movie buffs. Are you guys movie people? Tell me I know Carly, you've been on the podcast and you said you're not really a movie person, but Hannah, let's listen. Like what's your background on movies like Are you obsessed? Are you diving in deep? Every actor, every director, every producer, every writer, you know them all, right? justin: I think you've described the opposite of me, but no, but you did mention expert on horror and Halloween things. but I'd also like to note that my husband calls me Sesame Street because that's also quite the opposite. So I'm very excited to be here. Zach Wheeler: It's come up on it's come up on the pod, just you know, once or twice. justin: okay. Okay. Well yeah. Well here I am. Hello. no, I mean I like most people enjoy movies, but I feel like with our limited time as busy parents, whenever I'm watching something I want to be like happily entertained and most of the time that doesn't come in the form of scary things. Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: I I get that. I mean I is it like all scary things, Hannah? Or is like do you have like I feel like there's tiers of scary like there's like justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: gory scary things or there's like the spoo like there's the haunting of Hill House where it's just like it's kinda like the ring, like that kinda s or is it just anything scary in general? justin: That is a very good question. I feel like what would you say, Justin? It is it makes no sense. The best way to describe it. Because Zach Wheeler: Ha ha ha ha ha. justin: she loves Stranger Things. She loves a lot of Mike Flanagan's stuff that we've talked about. So Hill House, Bly Manor, she loved all of those. Loved Zach Wheeler: really? justin: But I watched them. But anything outside of that, hard no. I like a thriller. Zach Wheeler: Mm-hmm. justin: true crime, anything like that, but Zach Wheeler: Mm-hmm. justin: anything that's gonna keep me up at night, I'm like, I don't know about that. Which I guess that's a pretty vague Zach Wheeler: So ghosts, goblins, too scary, but murderers that are real, that's fine. justin: Yeah, honestly, yeah, yeah. But doesn't doesn't everybody love a good serial killer documentary every now and then? Zach Wheeler: Yeah. Yeah, we're millennials. This is what we're meant to like, okay, you know. That is the dividing line, justin: Yeah. Either that or Zach Wheeler: right? It's like real horror, like things could c actually happen, or like ghosts and whatnot. And like sometimes people are like, no, one is scary or the other one's not scary, etcetera. So that's yeah. Let's play catch up. You justin: That's true. Hmm. Zach Wheeler: guys both we watched Halloween last week and Justin gave our opinions. We thought it Justin didn't like it. I thought it was fine. Where were you you guys both justin: I also watched it. Zach Wheeler: watched us? Where were were were? you watched it too, Hannah? Yeah, they both you both watched it. justin: I did. Zach Wheeler: And that was the first I had never seen it before that. Had you seen it before that? No. justin: Mm mm. Zach Wheeler: Alright, Hannah opinion. Loved it. Good. Alright. No. justin: It w Yeah. I think I had probably similar feelings to my husband about it. It was I don't know why it's considered a classic. I think 'cause it's like the first, right? It was like Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: the beginning of all of that. But no, I I did not love it. Zach Wheeler: What about you, Carly? You know what I liked? I liked the the way it made me feel. Like I I the whole time I was a little uneasy. Like the all the camera shots made it feel like some someone was watching because he was like being a creepy stalker the entire time. So like I like I I I was like, I get what you're doing here. I get it. Mm-hmm. Is it one that I'm like a a classic? Every every yeah I gotta justin: Hmm. Zach Wheeler: watch Halloween again. Like no. I I'm probably good. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: I've seen it. But I appreciate the justin: Did it Zach Wheeler: way they did it. justin: did it make you feel comfortable because that's how Zack stares at you from across the room? I thought it was Zach Wheeler: I was like, this feels like home, you know? That's how we met. Yeah. justin: Yeah. I think for me I was like, okay, this isn't scary because most of the movie was not scary and then the action was in like literally the last twenty minutes. I mean action, quote unquote. But f Zach Wheeler: Yeah. Right. justin: that that was you know, if that was done in twenty twenty six it would not look like that. Zach Wheeler: No, I did think the very end was I like, There's no way anyone's getting up from that final like attack and then he's like, Boop, he's gone. What happened to the guy? Like J Justin's pitch justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: for a sequel was him stumbling into the hospital covering. Exactly. I was like, That dude is like messed up. And he just like scrambled out of there. justin: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: How did that happen? Anyways. All right, we don't have to we don't have to justin: I appreciate it though, because now I feel like I understand all of these like pop culture references 'cause there was like a reference to it in another movie. And I was like, I get it Zach Wheeler: Yeah, but it's pop culture. Speaking of like pop culture references, Ghostbusters is like I I I feel like you don't even if you've never seen this movie, you've seen it just because it's so pervasive in the culture, you know? I justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: agree. I think that there's a lot I completely forgot about from this movie. And I was like, Whoa, this is not these are there's certain things they Yeah, like the ghost with like the X across, like, yeah, everyone's like that's But then the like the vortex the hill, that I completely forgot about that part. Like that justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: not as common. All right, Justin, let's go around the look, I don't know how to like navigate a four person podcast. I'm gonna do my best, okay? So Justin, let's go around the room. Have you seen it? What is your feelings if you have any nostalgia for it? justin: I have seen it. I watched it a bunch as a child. I we rewatched this I wanna say maybe two or three years ago. just for fun. And yeah, I mean I I don't know. I I have a lot of nostalgia to it, but watching it now it with modern lens, it it's yeah, we'll we'll dive into it. But there's things that haven't aged properly or I mean age well. Zach Wheeler: But you've seen you saw this justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: like since you've been a little kid. Like you don't remember not seeing this movie. Yeah. How about you, Hannah? good, sorry, Justin. justin: Mm-hmm. no, yeah. I had never seen it until I was a grown up. So and apparently we watched it a couple years ago, but I guess it was fairly unmemorable, or maybe I was like half watching, Zach Wheeler: Ha ha ha. justin: half working kind of thing. so rewatching it yesterday was yeah, a little more eye opening. Zach Wheeler: Okay. And then you Carly, you said That's how I felt. Like I like I know I've seen I've seen it. And it's one of those things where I c I couldn't tell you when I saw it. Was I was I a kid? Was I a teenager? I don't know. I just I know it's happened, but it felt like I felt like it was a I was a new viewer yesterday. So alright. So I've seen this movie probably twenty times. And justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: like Justin, like I don't remember having not seen this movie. I don't even know if I needed to watch it for this podcast. Like that's how many times and how familiar I am with the movie, the concept, the characters, who Zool is, who Gozer is, all that stuff, right? So like for me, like it's a very familiar and nostalgic movie for me. This justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: movie is like regarded as like one of the best comedies of all time. It's like a top twenty. on like AFI's comedies, one like you one hundred comedies of all time. It was the second highest grossing movie in nineteen eighty four. Right, just behind well, another great movie which we need to cover, which is Beverly Hills Cop. so I'm really curious, like, do you think it sounds like I already know the answer, but do we think it lived up to the hype? Do we think this is like the pinnacle? I get why every boomer in Gen X loves this movie. justin: I think Carly needs to go first, 'cause Carly had a fun reaction when you said the the funniest movie of all time. Zach Wheeler: Where it's like number one comedy. It's not number one. It's like number fifteen of all time. This is all time guys. for it in so many ways. I think we're gonna cover off on like how at in at that point certain things are funny that nowadays I'm like, ooh. justin: It's a great way to put it. Zach Wheeler: Alright. This is not funny. So you're saying this movie deserves justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: to be top fifteen of all time? I I think it's good. I think it's good. I don't know. I don't know. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: No comment. Hannah, did you love it as much as I did? justin: Love. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it. We'll do are we doing ratings later out of ten? Zach Wheeler: Yeah, we'll we'll we'll go over podcast structure in a minute here. I just was I just wanted to open justin: okay. Zach Wheeler: up with like how crazy or what what what like kind of the background justin: How did we feel about it? Zach Wheeler: of this movie is. Cause this movie was a crushed it. justin: Yeah, I was I was entertained. Zach Wheeler: Entertained. justin: I was entertained. I watched the whole thing. Zach Wheeler: Which i which is a actual that that's a big deal. If Hannah's gonna like I right? Like I feel like justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: they're like I sat through the whole thing and I'm like, Well then right there, that's at least like a star and a half. That's justin: Yeah. Absolutely. Zach Wheeler: more than like a you know, that your average person who will be willing to sit through something. So that's good. Justin, do you like do you like this movie? justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: Like it were did you have n nostalgia for it at all? justin: I don't know. Well I like y yes and no. I think so right now our daughter is going through a Ghostbusters theme song phase where she just wants to listen Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: to it nonstop. So like that's really, really fun. But then it's Zach Wheeler: We probably won't talk about it, so you know. justin: it's the it's the nostalgia, I think, right? Like Zach Wheeler: Sure. justin: but outside of that watching it w with with fresh eyes at thirty seven, there's a lot of things that you don't catch as a child. And yeah, I think like I don't know. I don't know if I would put it in like the classic territory. I think it's I think you can put it as a Halloween classic, for sure. I would put it in that box. Yes. Zach Wheeler: Sure. Yeah. Yeah, it's a pretty short list, honestly, like when we were going over like what we should watch. I'm like, you know, it's not like Christmas. Christmas is stacked but with movies. That is a good silo though, justin: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Zach Wheeler: like a classic versus like a a holiday like you know, a themed classic's very different. So I think that yeah, Ghostbusters would be in the Halloween classic territory. justin: Mm-hmm. The list also would have been longer had you allowed us to choose like Hocus Pocus or Halloween Town. Yeah, Halloween Town. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, but they can't justin: Halloween Towns up here, Ghostbusters down here. Yes, he did. Zach Wheeler: my god. Okay. I can't wait. Zach put a hard kibosh on Halloween Town and the group chat, that one just like went down in games. To be considered a classic, part of the rules it had to come out in theaters, it couldn't have been a Disney Channel original, okay? That's all I'm saying. justin: Just hey, just because you didn't have a fun childhood doesn't mean you get to shit on ours. Also, some of the decomps are the best movies of all time. It's true. I'm probably not gonna be invited back to the podcast after that comment, but Zach Wheeler: That's just hard disagree. I think none of them are in the best movies of all time. No, Zach was an immediate no. justin: it's fine. No, okay. Ghostbusters theme song, absolute classic. That's a banger. Like I have nostalgic nostalgia just for the theme song. Zach Wheeler: Okay. I got some I got some I got my own notes on that one, but okay. boy. Alright, before we get all into this, right, let's get into first I gotta give my synopsis. It's part of the rules of the podcast, just what has to happen. Okay. And then we'll go over the podcast structure. So first I'm gonna start out well, let's start out with the podcast structure first and then we'll go into the synopsis. That way we don't have to come back to it. So, from a structured perspective, we're gonna give some notes, our notes about the movie, kind of our initial thoughts. We'll talk a little bit about maybe the background and some of the cultural impacts of this movie. Then we'll get into our categories or superlatives, whatever you want call them. and then finally, all four of us are gonna rate whether or not we think this movie is a classic from a synopsis perspective. Here's justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: my synopsis. Four college professors turn blue-collar exterminators. Achieve overnight success and fame, only to find themselves at odd with the EPA over government oversight. Meanwhile, their most problematic member hits on their very first client, who happens to be dealing with the most extreme infestation that they've ever encountered. justin: Bravo, well done. Yeah, that's it in a nutshell. Mm-hmm. Yeah. You captured Zach Wheeler: There you go. I mean they exterminators. Yeah. It's kinda it's what it is. Now they're just kinda like blue collar Joes, you know, gun in there with their guns, coming in there lasering some ghosts. justin: It. Mm-hmm. Absolutely. You captured Venckman pretty perfectly. I like that. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, he's their most problematic. There's no doubt. justin: Mm-hmm. We have feelings about Venckman. Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: I know, I'm gonna defend him a little bit. I think I'm gonna defend a lot of people in this movie a little bit. Because you know what? Yeah. First of all. There's always gotta be one. Look, at the end of the day, we're in Trump's America, okay? And there's no rules anymore, okay? EPA is the bad justin: Ooh, I'm sensing a three on one team up here. whoa. I didn't know we were getting political on here. Okay. Let's light this candle. Zach Wheeler: guy. We're we're we're being skeezes. I love it. We're in Trump's America, baby. justin: And the earth is flat. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, well hey. Just don't take any vaccines, we'll be good. That's all that matters, right? So And justin: That's right. Mm-hmm. What's science? Zach Wheeler: there goes that's our listeners went from fifty two now to fifty, you know so just just got it's all justin: Yeah. Definitely just chunks them on that little rendezvous point. Hm. Zach Wheeler: it's all good. But you know what again, I'm not doing this for the listeners, right? I'm doing this for us. This is for me. This is posterity, baby. Yeah. justin: Yeah, this is this is for your Zach Wheeler: Stress. justin: son when he's forty years old and you're dead. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, apparently. Exactly. Right. When I'm dying, I want him to be. I'm gonna have my podcast just in my hospital room, just playing. And be like, remember me! Remember me. The Ghostbusters justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: episode specifically. The from a justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: from a r from a real synopsis perspective, just for people who haven't seen this movie, I think this movie's like, again, like culturally, it's just everywhere, right? Maybe, maybe Gen Z might feel differently on that, which I'll be really curious to talk about, or our kids, but I mean, y like you you were just talking about your daughter, our son, like they love the Ghostbusters theme song. So justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: I think it still has a lot of pervasiveness. You guys are in a phase right justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: now, so it's what she wants to listen to all the time. boy. But let me let me just give a real justin: yeah. All day. Every day. For like the last week. Zach Wheeler: quick plot synopsis just to get that out of the way and then we can start talking and compare notes. So this movie follows three professors at Columbia. For some reason, Columbia hired these guys, we'll get in the nitpicks later. three professors justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: at Columbia, and they are paranormal investigators, psychiatrists, whatever they are, right? They they study the paranormal. they get fired, so they found a like Ghostbuster exterminating business. And the movie just follows them on their shenanigans. they meet a client. play by Sir Gordon Weaver. She has but basically is like the nexus to a god living in her refrigerator. And justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: when the god possesses her, it's up to the Ghostbusters plus the one guy they hire halfway through the movie randomly, to go get rid of this, you know, ancient god and bring peace back to New York. And it ends with a big marshmallow man running amok in Manhattan, so justin: Mm-hmm. Stay puffed. Zach Wheeler: That's that's the that's my very succinct plot synopsis. justin: No. Zach Wheeler: Off the cuff plot synopsis. justin: Marshmallow villain. 'Cause like giant marshmallows sounds like a great time. Real fun. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, no, right? Seems so sweet. I think it's I I think the marshmallow man is brilliant. So we'll get to it, but I think it's incredible. All right, so let's start comparing some notes. Dustin, why don't you go first with some of your initial notes, initial thoughts that you had? justin: I didn't have a whole lot. I mean like I think it is fun in a lot of areas. Yeah, I know. Off to a great start. I think it's really fun. Zach Wheeler: Good podcasting. I didn't really care, whatever, you know, let's just move on. justin: No, in a very okay, in a very similar sense into Halloween, like there's there is not a lot of depth here. I think the depth comes from the nostalgia of this movie because it's something that we grew up with. We watched when we were kids. A lot of people have a lot of hard memories with us. but no, I think it's fun. I think it shows its age in a lot of areas, but overall it's a good Halloween movie. And I don't even think I don't even know if it originally was supposed to be a Halloween movie. I think it came out in like June or something. But it Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: Is just found itself in the Halloween bubble. Zach Wheeler: It's ghosts and everything, right? Like, I think like this movie's really interesting in that like the when it comes out in 1984, it is a summer movie, becomes a summer blockbuster. I mean, this movie's huge, right? It's like $30 million bud budget, it makes like $280 million. Like just second highest grossing movie of 1984. Huge movie. And so it has like this interesting run of being a summer blockbuster and then being like everyone's Halloween costume that year. And justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: then it's like so it has like a second life at Halloween. And then it's everyone's Christmas toy gift at Christmas. So it has like this three season arc over its initial run that just like propels it into the pop culture and it's still here today. I mean there's you I was listening to a podcast earlier and they were talking about Hail Mary, 'cause that was a big movie. And I think like there's some similarities in like, you know Kind of like the average Joe just doing work and he's got like some goofy sidekicks and things like that that are I don't know, supernatural alien, whatever you want to call it, right? But it's like it's got some similarities. Comedy, drama, all that stuff. But you're not gonna see the Ryan Gosling costume at Halloween. You'll see way more Blockbuster co or Blockbuster Ghostbuster costumes this year than you will than than you will, right? Yeah, Blockbuster R I P, right? Yeah, but justin: R R I P Zach Wheeler: Talk about dating artists. I just think it's like it's an interesting movie and has this like interesting run. didn't you have a Ghostbusters? yeah, I Ghostbusters I think senior year of high school, right? Me and me and one me and one of our friends were. Yeah. I'm like I rem I remember that. I remember photos of that. justin: yeah, you were. Yeah. Look at Carly's face right now. She's like, and why were you dressed up? Yeah. Yeah, you're exactly right. Yeah, I mean Zach Wheeler: Yeah, and that was twenty years after this movie, not let alone forty now. justin: I think yeah, I think this movie holds a special place in a lot of people's hearts, but I think if nothing else, the theme song gives this movie a pass. because the theme song is arguably the most iconic part about this movie, in my opinion. Yeah, I don't I don't know if you have Ghostbusters without the theme song. That is Zach Wheeler: Interesting. justin: that is stood the test of time. The movie maybe not so much. Theme song, yes. Zach Wheeler: Man, we are gonna I can't wait to get into this. I was like, maybe not. I'm like, well first of all, the Proton Packs, iconic Slimer iconic. No, I mean like the the s justin: The sound effects, yes. Zach Wheeler: the the I got some I got some fun trivia about the the song. We can get into it now or we can put it in one of our categories later 'cause I think we'll bring up the song again, I'm assuming. but it's interesting. And a little problematic just like the rest of this movie. Like everything The song is? yeah, of course. This this whole movie's problematic. What are you talking about? Right? You know. You can't escape it. justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: so what about you, Hannah? What are your what are your some of your notes? justin: So before Justin gave me all the categories, I just had like a like and a dislike list going. The Zach Wheeler: Mm-hmm. Fair. Okay. justin: like list was more so just about how unlike a lot of sci fi or like superhero films, they were just like regular people, you know. I mean kind of academics, but yeah, they made like ghost busting Kind of like plumbing or pest control or w waste management. but yeah, I mean there were things that I liked. most of my notes are gonna be based off of the aesthetic, like the fire hall, Dana's pink couches and curtains, the rich mahogany in the hotel. Zach Wheeler: Okay. justin: I said that the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man was really giving Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, so the nostalgia really hit hard there. There were some parallels. For someone who didn't watch it as a kid. But yeah, but I like I said, I did enjoy it. I was thoroughly entertained for the most part, but definitely have a list of dislikes as well. Zach Wheeler: Carly, what about you? No, I mean I I I agree. I think it was very entertaining and I and something that I I enjoyed. I was like, these I guess we'll we'll get into it but I'm like, this ghosts are not, like, this is not this all seems pretty fine. And then you get into her like apartment scene where it's just like the fridge opens and just all hill breaks loose. And I'm like, wow. justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: Like it j just like the the the way it jumped to different things, I actually thought was really fun how it It wasn't something that you could be like, I can guess what's gonna happen next in this movie 'cause justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: it would throw you for some loops. And so I I also enjoyed that. So did you guys do any research about like who wrote this movie, who directed it, produced it, made it? No. No? Okay. This just it's justin: No. Absolutely not. Zach Wheeler: nodding his head by the way. And I'm like, Why are you So this is Justin I's second Ivan Reichman. The director is Ivan Reichman. Do you remember Justin Who's our first movie we did we covered of his? justin: No. Zach Wheeler: He did Dave, our very first podcast. We're coming full circle, baby. We're back we're back with our guy. Yeah, so he did justin: wow. Yeah. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: Dave. He's done a lot of things. The director, he directed this, Dave, of course, which I love. what was some of the my god, why am I drawing a blank right now? You told me another one that I was like, my gosh. No, he's huge movies. I'm like it him and Harold Ramis, I always get confused on which ones they did and which ones the other ones did. because Harold Ramis is Egon in this. And Egon The guy who plays Egon, Harold Ramis, and Dan Aykroyd, who plays Ray, they're they're the writers of the movie. So they wrote it. and then they got Ivan Reichman to come direct it. And Ivan Reichmann, some of the other ones that he's directed, let's see. Here, let me just pull them up an old Wikipedia. I d I don't want to get it wrong. I'm like Kindergarten. Yeah, kindergarten cop. Junior, Ghostbusters, justin: Mm, classic. Zach Wheeler: Meatballs, Twins. He's a producer on Animal House and Space Jam. And he's done a lot of Space Jam. That's the one that you're justin: Hmm. Zach Wheeler: so he's just a like a giant of like the eighties comedy era. And he got a start actually in horror. So this movie kinda has like an interesting transition for him, right? It's like kind of he brings in those horror elements and then but yeah, it was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. It was originally written for John Belushi. For which part? For Venckman. For Bill Murray's part. Would have been John Belushi, but then it was John Belushi and and a Dan Aykroyd vehicle, but then Belushi died. and so it was kind of rewritten over a two year period. And they went through a bunch of scripts. The original concept was like tr it was like time travel ghost hunting, was like way more complicated. and a lot of the second act with all the gozer and the much more supernatural elements comes from that first draft and all the pedestrian stuff at the beginning of the movie comes from like kind of the like the rewrites and everything like they're like ground this movie a little bit more, you gotta explain like where they're coming from kind of stuff. so I think it I think it works in some ways. It makes the movie feel a little uneven at times. but I think it works for the most part. justin: Do you think the original script had as much sexual harassment for the main character? Zach Wheeler: So I was gonna my first note I wrote down is like, man, the eighties their humor was much hornier than ours today, right? They got some horny humor. Like there that's when when we talk about being a comedy, like I get why at the time people were like, This is hilarious but now it's just people just don't joke in the same way. But you think y you see Vacation which Harold Ray Miss, the guy who plays Egon, he directed that. but you see like Vacation, Caddyshack They're all kind of Which Caddyshack is another Harold Ramus movie too. So I get confused on these two. They like have the very same vibe. and they're all they also work together quite a bit. But Caddyshack, Meatballs, like Stripes, like all these movies from the eighties are these comedy movies, and they're just like they're a little like problematic in their in their like justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: they're a little the you know, someone's needs to put their hands in their lap, okay? That's all I'm saying. Like it's you know put your hands down. Don't stop touching people, okay? justin: So we were talking about I I don't know if you guys are if you're familiar, but all right, in Stranger Things season two, 'cause it takes place right around Halloween, but the boys all dress up as the Ghostbusters, as their costumes Zach Wheeler: Mm-hmm. justin: that they wear to school. And I think Mike and Lucas, they they get into an argument about who gets to be bankmen. because they love Zach Wheeler: yeah. justin: Venckman so much. And I think that, while not a historical account, Stranger Things, I do think it's like a good snapshot into the eighties. Like when you look at Wikipedia, the critics consensus on this was like they love the movie, but specifically Bill Murray was phenomenal. And they all thought that he was so funny and that his his character was just perfect comedic relief for everything. But it's just I think it's a really good snapshot of what humor was like at the time. And y we look at it now and just some things haven't aged. But there's other things. Alright, there is one l he has one line. I was like, that's that's Zack. one of One of them asks Zach Wheeler: It was w it was it was it was when he was doing the with the student and he was giving her the cards, right? That you did you like that that one? No. justin: No, no. when they get to Dana's apartment and they see the stairs going up and one of asks, like, where do the stairs go? And Vinkman just looks over and he says, Up I was like, That's Zach Wheeler: Hehehehehe. justin: Zack. That is Zack's humor. like some of that stuff that it's really funny. It holds, Zach Wheeler: Yes. No. justin: but like, yeah, the sexual stuff is kinda creepy and he's yeah, I don't know. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, he's a he's a he's a skeis for sure. I like Venckman. I find like I find Bill Murray enjoyable. Like I enjoy Bill Murray. I like him a lot in his movies, but he is he plays this just this skeezy asshole like in everything and he somehow always overcomes it by the end of the movie. I'm like I always walk away, I'm like, this guy sucks. I'm like, you know what? But you could definitely tell Grandhog's Day, you're good. Yeah, they set him up. He was the cool guy. Like you you could tell in this movie, like he they're like Bill Murray is our cool guy, main character, like he's got the jokes and he's, you know, getting the girl in in his own special way. Like, you know, he's the funny guy. So yeah, I think justin: I Googled it, like why did people like him at the time? Because that humor just absolutely does not translate to me. I've never been okay with that kind of humor. And it was saying like Zach Wheeler: Ha ha ha. justin: the like cynical anti-establishment slacker who talks his way out of everything and like the persistent suitor. I was like, that's so true, but Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: God I'm so glad that we have moved past that era of humor. Zach Wheeler: What a way to put that. The persistent suitor. Like the guy who who just won't take a no for an answer. First of all, I had to ask Carly I had to ask Carly out like six times justin: That was that wasn't me. Zach Wheeler: in college before she would go out with me. That's right. So you know what? Like. Yeah. Well, I mean, as justin: so you are a lot like Venckman. You are Venckman, aren't you? Zach Wheeler: a professor and she was my student, that's like was it was what I had to do. No, no. It wasn't it wasn't the justin: This is not real. Zach Wheeler: Vinkman Vink. You were just being you were just being coy. Okay. I knew you were into it. That's fine. I yeah. I was that ghost that ghost you just couldn't catch for a while. justin: Carly just wanted to have fun and you you were in the way. Zach Wheeler: Well, one of my other first notes, I was like, we should have like honestly, we should have named our kids Zool, Vins, justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: or Gozer. I'm like, these are great names. We could have had some just that was hard. When I w when we watched this, I was like, I totally forgot the Zool element. I completely forgot. And I don't know how I Forget that. It's kind of unforgettable. justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: Justin and I always refer to our kids by their first initials because we just don't want to use their names. You know, I I don't know. justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: Whatever. Who cares? I don't know. We're just not comfortable with that maybe necessarily. Or maybe I'm not and I'm forcing it on Justin. I don't know. But but you know, that's justin: I don't think he cares 'cause we talk about ours on my social media page. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, now they're they're gonna have an indirect path to yours, but you know but yeah, so that's what G stands for, right? Gozer. Your daughter's name is Gozer. So Yeah, now we can finally say it. Gozer the destroyer. Gozer the Gozarian. Kinda. justin: Yes. You gonna you wanna ch you wanna change H to Z real quick for Zool? Zach Wheeler: That was his his baby nickname was Balrog, which was like that demon from Lord of the Rings. justin: Ooh Yeah yeah yeah that's a hey that's a bad that's a badass baby nickname if we're being honest here. Zach Wheeler: I mean, I'm telling you, we're like the ball rug He's awake. He's awake. justin: Mmm Zach Wheeler: Alright, let me see what let me see if some I have some other notes here. I got like we can we'll get to like the characters and stuff 'cause, you know. justin: Fucking handwritten notes. I can hear you flipping pages. Zach Wheeler: Hey. I know he thought I was playing on my phone the whole time. I'm like, no, I'm taking notes. He's like, that's how Justin does it on his phone. I'm like, that's crazy. This tech. justin: These handheld device. Zach Wheeler: I had the most nineteen eighty fours. Like nineteen eighty four's Reagan America thing. I think we alre I already touched on it, but like the EPA as the villain is just it made me laugh. that was one of my like coming justin: Mm-hmm. Okay. Zach Wheeler: in there and being like Ugh If only we could protecting the environment, get out of here. That gosh darn EPA. Yeah. justin: That was my hot take. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: Caring about the environment stuff with ghost slime. In h in their defense, Walter Peck is the worst, right? He's the v he's also have you guys ever seen him in anything before? justin: Mm-mm. Zach Wheeler: He's like a classic eighties villain. He's the justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: the news anchor in Die Hard. Who's justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: like who like is like trying to s you know, he's like sneaking information. I don't know, he's just terrible. It's same exact character, just the worst. He's just unlikable from this movie. He's like a top ten eighties douchebag. Everything he plays, it's great. He's great in it. Apparently from this movie He's like, I couldn't go out in public. People just be like, You're an asshole, you're the worst. And he's like, I'm just playing a character, you know. That means that means he did a good job, at least. Yeah. That's like justin: Yeah. Mm-hmm. He was unlikable. Zach Wheeler: that's very like Joffrey level. People are all mad at that actor too. Sure. You're just really good at playing the role. justin: Mm. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: But the EPA thing being like that was their main issue, like over a lot of the ghosts, was pretty funny to me. Like this is just justin: But also like that was my hot take. Like the EPA was totally justified. Yeah, you from a safety standpoint, here my notes Zach Wheeler: yeah. I I think Where they I mean What first of e justin: say from a municipal safety standpoint, four unlicensed guys built a custom unregulated nuclear reactor in the basement of a densely populated residential Manhattan neighborhood with zero oversight or safety audits. Zach Wheeler: yeah, I'm gonna be a hundred I completely agree. First of all, is there any regulation about ghost containment? Okay, I don't think there's any justin: The hand is up. Zach Wheeler: regulation on ghost containment. Where are the rules on ghost containment? Okay. We see the responsibility level when they go to handle the one in the hotel because they just wreck that ballroom like for fun. Like they just start going nuts. I'm like, so these the guys that we're trusting justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: to do all of this n nuclear building justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: and things? They're like, by the way, don't combine the streams or we could all get get fried, the world would be over. Exactly. They know what they're doing. You guys the justin: Ha ha ha Zach Wheeler: EPA guy clearly doesn't know what they're doing. Look, sometimes you just have to be like, Look, we're the experts. We know more than you. I don't know. Right now the sea you guys you guys are the problem. Nobody wants to this justin: Make it till you make it, right? Zach Wheeler: is why we have flat earthers out there. Nobody wants to like listen to the experts. justin: You know what, Zachary, spoken like a spoken like a true billionaire in Trump's America. Good for you. We know what we're doing, trust us. Zach Wheeler: It's fine. Just let do it. Just let do it. I'm just saying, like, look, AI's unregulated right now and th it's about to, you know, take all of us out. So like I don't see any regulation about ghost containment in the in justin: Yeah. Yeah, you're not even you're not even gonna make it. Zach Wheeler: the in the EPA's guidelines, okay? justin: It's fair. This much fair. Yeah, you're right. AI is gonna kill us all anyways in like less than ten years, so Yeah. So let's so let's rip on Venckman while we can. Zach Wheeler: Don't say it too loud because they're listening, okay. Hey, it helps me edit this podcast, so you know what, okay. You c AI, you're my friend, okay? You saved me hours. All right. Let's get into the categories unless anyone has any more notes. Anything else they want to add before we start diving in here? I'm sure we'll have more to say. All right, I you know, All right. Wait, hang on. justin: Hey, before we move on, Zach, you you you really like this movie, don't you? I get that sense. Zach Wheeler: There's elements of this movie I love. I do not hate Venckman. I get why he's problematic. There's no doubt. No, you can tell he's already geared up to be like, I'm ready to go to town to defend this Ghostbusters. This movie justin: Yeah, he's he's on he's on defense hard right now. Zach Wheeler: hard. It's almost like he's on offense, he's on defense that hard. Like. Exactly. justin: Also like for for reference I feel like this is pretty standard like three versus one and Zach is always the one. For good reason. Zach Wheeler: He loved because he loves to be devil's advocate. He loves to be the one that's like I have the opposing opinion and I wanna talk about it and I'm gonna justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: challenge everybody. Well, I am the most correct and then Justin and Hannah are like, No, no, this is a problem. Anyway. So that's I I can't wait. Let's go. All right. justin: Yes. Yeah. The oversexualized Sojourney Weaver as a demon? That's a problem. Zach Wheeler: my gosh. my gosh. first of all. She well I'm I'm just saying as a s as justin: Zach was like, nah, that was hot. Zach Wheeler: a as like an eight year old I was like Awakening, right? You know, that and like her in what's it called? the Star Trek s spoof movie, with Tim Allen. justin: Hm? Space balls. Zach Wheeler: No, not Space Ball, that's Star Wars cat. No, you're right, you're right, right? justin: Galaxy Quest Yeah. Zach Wheeler: Galaxy Quest, that's right. She was awesome in Galaxy Quest too. That was like my first two experiences with Segordney Weaver and I like I'm in. I'm she's on my list for the rest of my life, you know? Well yeah, she was a yeah, she's like the villain in justin: And then in holes. We should put holes on the mm Yeah. Zach Wheeler: holes. Was one she's like the camp director? Yeah, she's like the one who's making them digital. It's been a w it's been a while. It's not on the list. It's I have vetoed. I rem justin: Okay, we need to add holes to the list so Carly can rewatch. That's mm-hmm. Iconic. Yeah. That's actually that's we're gonna use holes as our last Halloween movie and they're coming back. Zach Wheeler: Nope, Justin, it's already past it's already past your month, you can't go back. So now it's I'm veto. Hard veto. No. I mean it's not a bad movie. It's not bad. It's not a look, we're reviewing classics. We're not like judging whether every movie is a classic. We're gonna take it we're gonna take something that's justin: It is a Disney movie. See, Zach, you're already you Zach Wheeler: considered a classic and then judge it. justin: You're already getting off course. Let's go. Come on, back on course. Pineapple. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, alright, let's jump in. So we're jumping in. Let's go over the categories real quick. So we're gonna do best scene, best character, worst character or weakest link of the film, Age the Best, Age the Worst, WTF or what the fuck are they talking about? what would make a good sequel or what might have happened the next day kind of thing? And then we'll do some hot takes and nitpicks and finally we will rate whether or not we think this movie is a classic. So let's start off with Best Scene. Justin, why don't you give us your first nomination? justin: I think they're the first job at the hotel. That's that's my favorite scene by far. It's really fun 'cause they haven't tested out any of their equipment. They don't know what's gonna happen and they're still terrified of ghosts. Zach Wheeler: Ha ha. justin: but yeah, it's I think it starts off really fun. If you count like them getting the call while they're eating dinner and they slide down the poles and go through, you know, like getting ready to jump out there and go, that's really fun. But yeah, when they get to the hotel It's just ever i I feel like the humor is at at peak levels. It's really funny. Like I think I laughed out loud when they They hear, I think, a maid and they turn around and just instantly shoot and like Zach Wheeler: Yeah, and they like turn around the last area. justin: but then you have like Ray is walking down the hallway, I think, just smoking a skig. Vinkman gets slimed. They destroy the hotel, like Carly said, like d just cause immense amounts of damage. but everything is just really fun about that scene. I I it's my favorite, I think. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, but they came, they saw, we conquered. Right. justin: There you go, fake man. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. No, I love that. I think I think Slimer is like a great design for a justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: little ghoulish He's like kinda lovable. He is. So he's justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: modeled after Jim Belushi. So after Jim Belushi died, that was like the one the the way that they kinda like brought him into the movie. Is they wanted him to kinda have like a a Belushi esque feel about him. Right? You're like he's like, you know, okay, I'll take it. justin: What a legacy. Zach Wheeler: Fine. I just think it was it was nice that they're like my best friend. I d I still want with us, even if we have to put as a justin: But I think i he Zach Wheeler: guy. Slimer. You're like, it's all right if he gets out, who cares? It's just slimer. It's fine. justin: Yeah. I feel like he he kinda became like their outside of their logo. I feel like he kind Zach Wheeler: Mm-hmm. justin: of became their unofficial mascot really. Like I think he was used Zach Wheeler: Yeah. For sure. justin: in a lot of like promotional stuff and Zach Wheeler: Yeah, and like animated series after the fact and all that stuff, yeah. So he justin: Mm. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: was not called Slimer in the movie. they didn't have like a that came later through other media. So originally I guess like the the puppet like smelled terrible. So they called him like onion head. That was like what they called justin: Mm. Mm. Zach Wheeler: him on set. Just fun facts. Throwing out there. Look, I the facts, I'm throwing them out, okay? The puppet smell like so what they used to film with? Yeah, so they filmed like all obviously this is before which we didn't talk about Oscars, so this movie's nominated for two Oscars. Do you guys look up what they were? No. justin: L O L. Zach Wheeler: So what do you what do you what do you think? Let's just get let's throw out a guess. Justin, if you looked it up you can't talk. Okay, let's look at the let's go let's do the gas. Maybe effects. Okay. Special effects. Okay, what else do you think? justin: Mm, yeah, effects for sure. and best theme song. The theme song, yeah. Zach Wheeler: Yes. So those are the two. It's just nominated for Best Visual Effects, which is Look at us and b and original song. Yeah. Did it win? justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: It did not win for either one, no. Hey, we know we we could be the the people deciding who to nominate for what though. We know what we're talking about there. Yeah. Good guess. Yeah, so like yeah, so the effects house that made all this was nominated. Slimer's one of their effects, but like this is back before CGI, so everything's like filmed. Like no, you can tell. Yeah, it's filmed beforehand, right? And it's kind of comped in, right? So In case you didn't know. justin: my favorite scene was also that first one. I feel like it it was just really fun and I don't know, one of the things I wrote down was like the proton packs. That was like the first time and the sound effects I feel like are really iconic for that. But when I think about the theme song and how fun it is, I feel like it really aligns with that first scene. And then the rest of the movie, mmm, but that first part I feel like was really good. Zach Wheeler: Well Yeah, it goes right to that montage of them like becoming famous with the Ghostbusters theme over it. Which I think is like probably another contender's that montage. justin: Mm-hmm. Yeah, the montage is really Zach Wheeler: What about you, Carly? What's your nomination? I am big. I so I'm big for an opening scene, like opening to the movie scene. Like it has to be a strong out the gate to like grab my attention period or like I'm out of there. So I actually really like the library scene where justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: the librarian and like she was funny to me because she just I fully I wrote down the first thing. I like, I relate to this librarian. She like, nope, and just like started running. I'm like, that's girl, yes. justin: Ran away. Zach Wheeler: I hate whenever they're like, What is that? And they keep going down like the s the dark, creepy stacks. It's just like, Goodbye Like just got out of there as like as soon as like things started flying. But I I think it just like set the whole thing off in like, okay, yep, there's a ghost right off the bat. Let's let's get into it. So I I enjoyed justin: Mm-hmm. Yeah. And they use they use so many good practical effects in that opening scene, which is really, really fun. Zach Wheeler: Yes. Yeah. It was. I exactly, like the the floating books and like the when she turns around and all that and it's got and then like the and that's when I was starting to laugh. I was like, this ghost is just a silly Billy because she just like stacks the go like the books up in the middle of the aisle and it's just like this is just kind of annoying, but it's not really a problem. Like I justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: I liked that. I like that one. No, I I that's like Yeah, justin: She is a silly bitch. Zach Wheeler: th that is like the one thing I like you can judge this movie off of like visual effects off of two things, right? There's like the Compton, ghosts, all the very eighties of it, right? Like puppetry and stuff. And then there's like the practical stuff. Like the one scene I love from a FX perspective is the VFX perspective is like the when Scorn Weaver's eggs are breaking in her apartment and they're landing justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: on the counter and then they start cooking. I think it's like just very cool. How they were able justin: Uh-huh. Zach Wheeler: to achieve that. You're like, you literally are like, That was actually a scene I wrote down. I wrote that one down because I was like, for me I don't even know if I would have been like, is that a ghost or do eggs just do that? 'Cause like my level of cooking, like what I do I'm like, this doesn't even feel very ghosty at this point. It's just more like, well maybe justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: that just happens sometimes. I don't know, like do eggs do this? Like I but that that was a good scene. I agree with that. What what a other justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: nomination. So you have the introduction scene, Carly. Anybody else have any other nominations? For some potential best scenes. The possession scene where he gets over to Sigourney's house. No, not that one. justin: Mm-hmm. And he brings drugs. Is that is that one of yours? Which Zach Wheeler: I love that scene. What are you talking about? That's a great scene. What is wrong with you guys? justin: Sigorni is possessed? And he brings Thor Thorazine Zach Wheeler: Yeah, he goes over there and he's like and he justin: to drug her Zach Wheeler: He doesn't drug her, he's drugging the demon that's possessing her. He's like no psike he's a doctor. justin: Yeah, but he still brought it. Yeah. Sure. Zach Wheeler: No, that was one of your favorite lines though. Whenever she was possessed. yeah, and she's like she's like like watching Side Me, it's like you already got two inside you, okay? I don't need She was like, Two's enough and Zach was like I loved it. I thought it was hilarious. You guys are crazy. justin: you creepy. I actually have a count of how many creepy moments and comments he made. Okay. Zach Wheeler: We'll get the Vecman, okay? Don't get I I wrote down for that scene specifically, I said typical fuck boy, she got possessed and he got the ick. 'Cause he was like, no thanks after that. yeah, I'm sorry. He was a gentleman because she was possessed. I'm sorry. No, he got the ick and he like He actually he actually does the right thing and you guys are like, what the worst person on the planet. justin: Okay. I did make a note of that scene and I said he he has a lot of negative points, but he got one point because her being possessed, he was very calm and handled it just like pretty cool and I was like, Alright, he gets one point. 'Cause he didn't say anything creepy for like three minutes. He Zach Wheeler: Yeah, he didn't he didn't cross any lines. Yeah, he didn't cross any lines, that's true. justin: He I will p I will point this out 'cause Zack wants to paint Venckman as this big hero. He makes a comment. He makes a comment about how he has what does he say? Like, I have a code that I don't sleep with possessed people or something. I don't know how he phrases it. But then Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: she starts kissing him and he goes, it actually is more like a guideline. He was ready. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: He was ready to go full creep and go for it. But then he Zach Wheeler: No, that stood out to me as well, Justin. I literally that line. He was like, it's a guideline. I was like, man, like I thought he was gonna be And he look he doesn't look You're right, he doesn't hook up with the possessed woman. It's true. Good job, Fakman. See, you're right, I'm tethering justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: his cap on the I'm glad we're all on the same page. He was a good guy in that scene. No, I th okay, alright, alright. I'm I'm telling you. justin: Mm-hmm. You know, we're learning a lot about Zachary tonight, that's for sure. Zach Wheeler: Wait, can I talk about my little the car scene now or do I have to wait? Or should I wait? What it w what do you want? It was the justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: two it was whenever they were just chit chatting. I said the I think these are my favorite guys, I'm trying to find their names. Yes, that would be in the best scene category is a scene that she liked. It was when justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: sorry everybody embarrassed Stans justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: and sorry. Ray Zenore. I I I always forget his last name, but it was yeah. Winston. Ray and Winston. Ray and Winston. justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: When they were just like chilling in the c at that car ride and it was I was like, We need to have them on camera more. Like a th them in the justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: scenes more, 'cause they're just like talking and like they get all philosophical about like, you know, the Bible and all of this, but they're like actually s saying what's happening. Like they're like, This is probably what's going on. It's like, Yeah, it is. And like, can we have them on the screen more? Like they just seem like a more chilled chill couple, like guys. justin: Yeah. I think yeah, that's a great call out. 'Cause like they I don't there's there is so much about this movie that is very humorous and there is a lot of levity in this movie. So to have a scene that's like fairly serious and like tries to put emphasis on how severe this issue is and what's happening, yeah, I agree. It's a good scene. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, and they were and they were a hundred percent correct. Like th it was like one of the few scenes where they're not just like, Well I don't know what these proton things are doing. Like they were like they were being the experts on it and But I liked I loved whenever they bring the like Winston on in general. Like he just he makes their dynamic better. You gu justin: Agreed. Zach Wheeler: let's pause for a second. The cat is fine, I can edit it it out in the background. Is that which cat is that? Is that Lou? Here, do you wanna get some more wine for us while we're talk while we're pausing? Yeah. Yeah, there f she's fine. I can it i justin: my god. Lou she Lou, she won't suddenly stop. She's been outside the door going Woo for like the last fifteen minutes. Zach Wheeler: i i I can edit her out. It's not a big deal. justin: Can you hear her? Zach Wheeler: a little bit, but it's fine. Like it's it's gonna get lost in the background. She's justin: Sorry. She's just trying to play with like everything on the desk. Zach Wheeler: She's fine. justin: playing. It's fine. Hey. Yeah, I don't know if you heard me at one point. I was like, Lou, shut the fuck up Zach Wheeler: Ha ha ha We'll just keep Lou in the background. She'll become our official you know, mascot of our pod. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: Do you guys ever listen to my favorite murder? justin: You're right. I I think I've heard it yeah. Zach Wheeler: It's a n it's a podcast with K Karen Kilgareth and Georgia hardstark. Georgia Hardstark and they they have a their justin: It's been a while, yeah. Zach Wheeler: their cat is like He he's he's gone on to the cat the kitty heaven in disguise but he was their like official mascot basically 'cause he would always come in and be like Mr Like in the middle of the pod and at the end like he he knew because they kept they got to like a cadence on time and he would come there at the very end and be like Mr Time to wrap it up. Come on, ladies. Let's go. So that's gonna be Lou. justin: Yeah. There we go. She's sitting here next to me, She's like, the baby's gone. I must you know. Zach Wheeler: She's like, Finally. The thing the little baby has gone to bed. Penny walked up to justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: us today. I know we're gonna hop back in, but Penny walked up today and I was like, What is on your head? And I Penny's our dog. I I smelled her head and it I was like, That's like mint ice cream, mint chocolate chip and I was like, What? No and B like, I put out I put on her head and I was like, What? Yeah, our daughter. Why did you justin: Ha ha ha Zach Wheeler: do that? but I was like, Okay, that's whatever, it's fine. Penny's just got like a crusty head with mint chocolate chip ice cream on her. She smelled great. Yeah. justin: But she smells good. Yeah, she smells good. Zach Wheeler: I know. Kids, man. justin: Zachary, did we ask you what your favorite scene was? Or what your vote for best scene? Zach Wheeler: No, s I I'm just gonna throw I'm just gonna throw out some other nominations. Just to make sure we're being holistic to this film that, you know, you guys despise. Okay, whatever. I don't care. I'm done with this pod. No, no. I'm justin: Mm-hmm. Whoa whoa. Despise it's very strong. Zach Wheeler: just kidding. I'm just kidding. no, but I I think we would be remiss if we didn't talk about the end of the movie, the marshmallow man, and the battle with Gozer. If that is what you would call that a battle, right? I think like th that's a pretty great scene. I do love this scene. When they are get it they get arrested and they go to the mayor's office and they're like, you know, basically convince the mayor that the EPA is wrong and that we c we're the only ones that defend the city. And the way they convince them is like, well think about all the constituents, all the voting members of your city that you would not that you could lose. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: He's no, I can't lose my voters right just like classic, you know, commentary on politics. It's great. and that's the scene too where justin: Yeah. Yeah. That has not changed. Mm. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. And that's like the classic scenes like mass hysteria, dogs and k you know, all that like all that good stuff. Plus I love the line when Dan Ackwood calls Walter Peck Dickless and then Venckman is like, Yes, he does in fact not have a dick. Yes. I wrote that down actually. I was like Dickless needs to be a like we need to use that more. I that one made me giggle. justin: Yeah, that's a really great insult. Zach Wheeler: It's like such a sick insult. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: So I think, yeah, so I think like we have to talk about the marshmallow man. It's great. I think it's like it's such a fun idea. And it's one of the original justin: It is. Zach Wheeler: ideas that Dan Aykroyd had in like his original script that's like carried through all of the rewrites and everything. It was like he wanted like a kaiju marshmallow man. Which is justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: like I love that he's just like, I couldn't help it, it's what I thought of. It's just what I thought of. Yeah. justin: It was cute. I was like, this feels like we're at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, but it's bad. Like, ooh, something something scary? Yeah, like he's cute as shit. Zachary, Zach Wheeler: Yeah, but doesn't feel that bad. justin: you okay, so watching this movie as a child, did you ever I as as a kid, the thing that I remembered about Ghostbusters was that I always wanted to eat the marshmallow man. Because he was a giant marshmallow. Did you did Zach Wheeler: Ha ha ha justin: you have similar feelings? Zach Wheeler: Would you agree? Did you also want to eat the marshmallow man? I just like regular marshmallows was probably where I'm gonna draw the line. But you know. I really I really love that, Justin. justin: Like especially at the end after he explodes and they're covered in like marshmallow goop. Yeah. Like I just Zach Wheeler: no, I'm I'm licking my fingers for sure, right? You know. justin: I I always remember as a kid thinking like, my god, I wish I could have all those marshmallows. Zach Wheeler: I think it's so funny that Vecman is not like covered in justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: in marshmallow and everyone else is like to the T like just soaked. It's just justin: You you stole my thunder on why Bigman sucks because even at the end everybody else gets gooed with marshmallow and he just walks out like totally fine. Mm-hmm. Mm. Zach Wheeler: So that's a Bill Murrayism. He was like, I do not want to be covered in this shit. And it so that's like Bill justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: Murray just being Bill like a curmudgeon on set. He's like, Alright, fine. He's like, here's a little bit. And Dan Ackbroad's like, just go nuts. It's fine. Because it looks like shaving cream, basically. It is shaving cream, actually. Yeah. Which it's justin: Yeah. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: it's like a that's a pretty non issue kind of thing to have all justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: over you anyway. It's not like it's actually sticky or anything, but Yeah, there's just Bill Murray being a He's like, I don't want that. Being a real Vink Ben. That's the thing about this movie. Like, they didn't have a script, really. They had like the concept of an idea, they had written drafts, but when they started filming, they didn't really have it. So a lot of it is ad lib. This is like one of first movies that like that's why kind of the dialogue feels much more natural, maybe a little silly, maybe a little jokey, like you're joking around with your friends, because they basically were. And justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: And so it's like in like Bill Murray was like famously like it still is, I think, like a little difficult to work with. He's like just totally willing to be like, nah, I'm not gonna I'm leaving, I'm done, you know, kind of thing. So they're always bending justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: over backwards 'cause he was a I mean, it's hard to think about it now, but he was probably like the biggest comedy star in nineteen eighty four. Like the biggest star. justin: Sure. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: And so they're they're bending over backwards for him throughout this whole movie, just to keep him around. That's part of the reason why Harold Ramis was brought in. So he's like really good friends with him and they did stripes together. And Harold Ramis was the one of the writers on Stripes too, I believe. Is he the justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: writer or director? I can't remember. I think Vec Eichmann was the director, but basically they were like once he committed and and Harold Ramis committed. And Harold is egon. He's egon, yeah. Sorry, sorry. Yeah. forg I forget who I'm talking to. He's one of the Ghostbusters. He's yeah Harold Ramus is Egon. justin: Yeah, what? What? Zach Wheeler: The science the nerdy one. justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: but w they brought him into the movie because Bill Murray's like, well, can't let Harold down So he's like I gotta stay around. justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: So it's like it was like one of the ploys to like keep him around. At least that's the rumor. It's funny 'cause like I feel like he was like at least to me, he he stood out the least as the ghost as the the least stande outy Ghostbuster guy. Yeah. I agree. We'll get the characters. but yeah, justin: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: so I thought the end of the movie. But I agree with you. Actually I agree with you guys. I think the best scene is the first ghost busting. When they go to the hotel and they're like wreck and shop and you know, Veckman's in like full sociopath mode, does not care that he's destroying this place, just is like, Yeah, we did it guys, you're welcome. And then he's like, That'll be five thousand dollars or whatever and he's like, Okay, fine, we'll let this ghost loose again. On you if you don't gotta pay it. Anyways, all right. So let's move on. Is anyone else justin: What's our next category? Zach Wheeler: next category, best character. So we're gonna go into best character first. We'll give a couple nominations. why don't you start us off, Justin? justin: I have a little bit of a left field nomination. I'm going with Ray. I really like Ray. I think he's I don't know, his character, one, he's really smart. but like it's fun because you can tell Ray genuinely loves his work. Like how they wrote him, I think. and he's like excited about everything that he gets to do with all this stuff, whereas not to rip on bankman, but like bankman, good Zach Wheeler: Like we have the entire time. justin: Like not to steal Ray's spotlight in my nomination here, but like Vinkman feels like he is inconvenienced by a lot of this, right? Like Ray on the other side, he genuinely loves it. but it's like you're watching this big kid who gets to live out like his dream of being a Ghostbuster. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: but yeah, I think Ray was I don't know. I also really like Dan Aykroyd. I feel like He's in so many movies that I watched growing up as a kid and I just love him. Bill Murray's cool too, but he's my he's my nomination. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, I think if you if if like if Egon is like the brains of the operation and if Bill Murray is the salesman or shyster, whatever you want to call them of the operation, and if justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: Winston's like the lay person's point of view, I think Ray, he's like the heart. Yeah. justin: Mm. For sure. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: All right. Panna Banana, what's your what's your nomination? justin: I have the same one. Because he's like he is. why not? Zach Wheeler: But y you can't nominate the same person. We've already do what you want. Sorry, you can do what you want. All right, I'll be a no I'm sorry. I'm being a stickler for the rules. justin: Ray is the heart and soul. Ray has genuine excitement. But also like without his excitement, you wouldn't have like a team. Like he says. Like Venckman's kind of inconvenienced and like I feel like yeah, without Ray you just wouldn't have the Ghostbusters. but if you want me to have a different answer, then I vote Janice. Is that her wait, was that her name? Janine. Janine. Yep. Janice. Zach Wheeler: We're j we're just nom we're nomin we're nominating right now. Janine. But yeah, we're nominating right now, right? So we will give our vote on who, right? We're just nominating. My favorite girl, Janice. I mean Janine. Whatever. Okay, Hannah, justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: that's actually like that is my favorite my favorite character was Janine. 'Cause I I just I loved how justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: sassy she was the entire time. with everyone. She never put up with Vinkman's shit. She was like, I'm sick of all justin: Ha ha ha Zach Wheeler: of you. This is insane like I'm not getting paid enough for this. But like she just I thought her comedy that she added was like it was different and funny. And I just justin: Yes. Zach Wheeler: I thoroughly enjoyed her character the whole time and just all the like little sass she would throw at all of them. And like justin: Totally. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: whenever one of the cop I wrote this down Whenever the cops came in and she was like dropping off or picking up He's like dropping justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: off. She's like, Okay, then you can come in. Like you can't pick up anyone, but you can drop off. But I was just love I loved that one. justin: No, she was fun. I appreciated how she was just like doing nothing on the job when they didn't have any calls coming in, like filing her nails or whatever, and Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: I was like, this feels like what I was teaching for some reason. I really resonated, like I'm just gonna try to do anything else with the job right now. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. It's like just to still make me do my actual job. justin: Right. I'm gonna disassociate. Zach Wheeler: No, she j J Janine is really, really good. That's another like like again, like how haphazardly this movie was put together. Look, I'm bringing the facts, that's what I got, okay? she like they didn't have a wardrobe for her. So she the actress brought that and she took those glasses, like they're like iconic to her character. Uh-huh. They're her makeup artist's glasses. She just took them from It was like I'm just gonna wear them for the scene. Yeah, it works. justin: Hmm. I did make make note of her fashion. Like she had on some like red tights with a jumper and I was like, Alright, is she cute? Zach Wheeler: Well, I kept thinking about the ghost bur busters with like Kristen Wig and all them and how they had Chris Hemsworth be like the Janine. Like he was Kevin, I think was his name. And I'm justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: like, it's really it they're not the same. Like they they kind of made they were like jokingly making him like the, you know, everyone's oogling him. But no one did that to to Janine. 'Cause Janine is not gonna like stand for that. Like I just I feel like it justin: No. Except the one guy. There was a romantic moment. Yes. No. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, Egon. That's Harold Ramus. that's true. Yeah, but I feel like that was very much like they w they liked each other. Yeah, and it was cut down. That was like justin: It was more Zach Wheeler: a much bigger plot in the extended version of the movie, but they cut it down for time. justin: I'd say it was more Janine pushing onto Egon. 'Cause she kinda Mm, yeah. Zachary, what about you? Zach Wheeler: Yeah, Egon seems pretty asexual, doesn't he? Alright, let's do some let's do some rapid let's do some rapid fire just to get through some characters and then we'll get to the. You didn't see we're gonna vote on the end. okay. Okay We're justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: nominating. This is nomination. Okay. I have rules on this podcast, justin: This is a long list. Zach Wheeler: okay? I'm not breaking them. Alright? No, so like alright, let's throw out Sigourney Weaver's character, Dana. justin: Yeah, she's cool. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: She's cool, yeah. So Sigourney, we were like fought for this role, by the way. Cause justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: you were like, Why is she why would she do this? Well, I said I was like, was she already like big at this time? He's like, Yeah, she had already done Alien, she had already done all that stuff. I'm like, this is just an interesting role for her to be in because she is such a huge actress. So she wanted justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: to break into comedy. So this is why she justin: Hmm. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: wanted this role so bad. Uh-huh. Was she wanted to be in she's like she was seen as a dramatic actor, wanted to be in comedy. I think she's great in this movie. But I love Super Nick. justin: Yeah, yeah. Zach Wheeler: We talked about Ray. I'll save Venckman, because he's actually not my favorite character. I'll save him. We'll we we'll get to him in a minute. Egon, he's whatever. A lot of people really love Egon and like how dry his humor is. But I think it's more just like justin: whoo shocker. Zach Wheeler: people justin: Hmm. Zach Wheeler: Who know Harold Ramis and like what he achieved after this. Because he's a huge director after this. I think it's a little a lot of it. But my sneak pick for favorite character, I love Rick Moranis in this movie. Like The neighbor. The neighbor. I think like I know justin: Mm. Mm, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: you didn't like him as much, Carly. I did not. Because you thought he was creepy, but I'm like, he's just pathetic. And I love he's every time he's in a scene, he's just like batting a thousand. He's making me laugh at like when he's going through the party and he's like he's like, Well actually this was twenty five ninety five an ounce, but I got it for fourteen ninety five and he's like, he's just I just love it so much. Yeah. I justin: 'Cause he's a finance guy, just like you. He's into taxes and stuff. Zach Wheeler: know it. He's like, Who's does your taxes? justin: He's also another what did I say a p persistent suitor. Another one. Another one. Zach Wheeler: Mm-hmm. If he was handsome and had a six pack, you guys would be and she's Why isn't she interested in him? You know what? Get out of here. You guys are fine. But I said I said, is Sigourney Weaver just surrounded by creepy dudes all the time? Like when when I saw it was justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: like Lewis the Neighbor and Vinkman and even maybe a smidge, that guy she played in the orchestra with. Like I I just I'm like, what is happening to this poor woman? Yeah. justin: Mm-hmm. It was the hair. Zach Wheeler: I just love the two of them together when they're when they're the gatekeeper and the key master 'cause she's she's like six foot tall and he's like five four and it that just and she bends him backwards. I love that like it is everything about Rick Moranus justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: I love in this movie. Alright, let's all vote. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: Best character Justin. justin: Janine. Zach Wheeler: Janine. Hannah. justin: Hmm. Right. Zach Wheeler: Ray. Carly. Janine. Janine. Zach. I'll go with Lewis. Lewis. No. I think I justin: Venckman. Venckman. Zach Wheeler: think I I I'm gonna go with let's go well I'll go with I'll go with Janine just to break the tie. So 'cause I would actually probably justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: say Ray, but let's go with Janine best character film. Ray's great. Like I and I'm not I this is not like putting 'cause I agree, I think Ray was another favorite of mine, but I just From the enjoyable, like other person thing. Like Janine, I feel like just had a lot of good, like zingers. Alright. And then my justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: one last nomination for best character, just real quick. The guy a c the Columbia president guy who fires them all. Like he's a hundred percent right. They do not bel need to be a Columbia. But Alright, let's go to worst character. So justin: Sure. I think I think we there's three of us here that can all agree. Yeah, this doesn't need to be a the word character rhymes with Schmeikman. I'll let Hannah and I'll Zach Wheeler: Walter Peck doesn't rhyme with Schmankman. What are you guys talking about? justin: let I'll let Anna and Carly just talk about why he's so terrible. I got a paragraph on this. Zach Wheeler: I mean unless we want to say like, I don't know, Zool or whatever, like the actual demon villain. But like besides that, like Wingman, like he it's Bill Murray, and I do I like Bill Murray a lot. So I feel like he kind of helped in this because I'm like, well, that's Bill Murray. Like he took me out of like hating Wingman so much. And I think, like you said, Hannah, there were some things where I'm like, well, he could have been worse in that scene, so it's nice he wasn't that bad in that scene. Like, justin: Yes. Zach Wheeler: okay, I don't know, but he a lot of the humor was just like it was not hitting for me. All right, Hannah, let's justin: No, no. Zach Wheeler: hear your list. Let's get let's get the rap sheet. justin: Walking red flag. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: I think I tally he had about nine moments of either being creepy or just like absolutely degrading towards women. But Zach Wheeler: Okay. justin: then he got one point for handling the demon in a calm way. I think that's right. Yeah, okay. what else? Some other things Zach Wheeler: No se justin: that I said earlier. Just I understand that in the late seventies and eighties pop culture was dominated by the cynical, anti establishment slacker who talks his way out of everything. and the persistent suitor. But also pulling out the Thorazine on a date and badgering her at Dana's apartment, would be Zach Wheeler: I honestly did not think why did he have the Thorzine? I'm like, that's actually a really good point. You're like, Why do you have that? I miss that part. So he he sedates justin: Harassment. You can't see me, but I'm doing the SpongeBob Rainbow. Zach Wheeler: her, right? Like 'cause he's like, I gotta leave, but she's possessed by a demon, so he sedates her. But he has to bring this. It didn't gosh. Yeah. Wow. Look at justin: Mhm. Mhm. So yeah, like by our cultural standards today he would absolutely be cancelled. Zach Wheeler: In not even the creep part, right? He makes Ray take out a third mortgage on his house to fund this business on like a nineteen percent interest rate. I think like you you knew justin: there's so many things. The consent consent workplace boundaries, like Zach Wheeler: my gosh. justin: All the things. You know, actually all right, Carla, you had a really good comment. 'cause you said Venckman or I mean w c we could say Zool. I think you could argue that Venckman has caused more damage than Zool has. Zool didn't really do anything. Zool what? Helped take mind control over two people and really cause an explosion on top of a building, but that's it. The building was fine. It's fine. Vinkmann has caused like emotional trauma. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, and she had a consensus she had a consensual relationship with the gatekeeper. Yeah. Well justin: Yeah, it's fine. Vinkman I think caused way more damage. And then he gets the girl at the end, like woof. Mm hmm. Zach Wheeler: Well that was the part that kind of got on my ner I literally wrote down because I'm thinking about the fountain scene justin: Back. Zach Wheeler: with when she I I wrote down for I said I like how rude Sigourney Weaver is to Vinkman. That was one of my notes. And justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: then my next note was Teehee, this weird insufferable guy, is back at the fountain. And she's like, Of course I'll go on a date with you I'm like, I thought you hated him. I thought we were in agreement that he's terrible, Sigourney. Yeah, see, this is justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: why this is why Dana's my sneaky worst pick. He becomes famous, he gets money, and then she's like, well maybe I guess I like. So she's like dismissive of him until he's justin: Huh. Zach Wheeler: famous. She's just out for the money. She's a gold digger, Dana. She's the worst character. I don't think she's a gold digger because justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: she's low-key living in a penthouse as a like musician. I'm just saying she's going on with Dana. She's Yeah, I'm telling ya. I'm just saying justin: Bro, those curtains were not cheap. They were pink. Zach Wheeler: She is at she has got a corner apartment at the very tippy top of that place. Like she's fine. I'm just saying once he was famous on USA Today. She's into him, okay? Alright. I like justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: she's I thoroughly enjoyed how rude she was to him at the beginning and then she just kinda that fountain scene, I was like, What is happening? Now you want to go on a date with him? What I don't get it. I what changed? He's famous, that's why. That's what changed. justin: It's a valid point. That's a valid point. All right, Zach. Let's hear it. Who's your flimsy excuse for nomination? What do you got? Dana, is that yours? Zach Wheeler: no, I think I think As I I like Bill Murray in this movie, but I do think he is like he's justin: Vencuman Zach Wheeler: the most problematic. I think the worst actor in this movie is Gozer. Like the woman, the David Bowie androgynous justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: woman who plays Gozer just coming out like over the top, just crazy just going on there. Right. But I don't I mean, she's in the movie for three minutes, whatever, right? You know. Yeah. So probably from a long term perspective, like justin: Hehehehehe Zach Wheeler: from a character writing perspective. Fankman is the most problematic. I think Bill Murray delivers it with a lot of skill. justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: whether you think he's I gr whether you don't like him, I guarantee you know he's he's he's not meant to be a hundred percent likable. but yeah, so probably that and then like Walter Peck is a great villain, like a great kind of just douchebag eighties douchebag coming in trying to enforce government regulation on a unregulated nuclear reactor, to your point, Hannah. Like, you justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: know. But he is he does he does it very well. So I I think the weak from a weakest link perspective it's probably Gozer, to be honest. But justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: from a from a from like just the most problematic character, it's probably Vakeman. I agree. justin: Wow. Okay, so we're all in a gr four votes for Vinkman. Okay. Zach Wheeler: Yep. Alright, let's get to best or excuse me, aged the best. What do we think aged the best, guys? What do we love about this movie so much? justin: Hmm. Okay. I am gonna give you my rapid fire list. Here we go. The theme song, because of course the theme song. Zach Wheeler: Okay. Yep. I'll we'll get to it again in a minute 'cause I got some age the worst about it, but okay, good. justin: the practical effects, really love the practical effects. and then I said just the nostalgia, so a couple of nostalgic things for you. Nineteen percent interest rates. Zach Wheeler: I know we're complaining about six. We're like, it's that six percent here. We're like can't even buy a house. Look, justin: smoking Zach Wheeler: as a finance guy, in justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: in the bank's defense, that was his third mortgage on the house. Yeah, you're gonna charge nineteen percent on that, okay? You don't y you're not gonna give us someone justin: Mm. Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: a third mortgage. justin: I had smoking often and indoors, Twinkies, and then Dana's pink pattern furniture and curtains. Wait, smoking Zach Wheeler: See, I I had justin: indoors aged twelve? Zach Wheeler: I had Lazy Sigs. This the lazy Sig in the mouth. Just lazy Sigs. I love it. I loved it. Just ch chimneys everywhere, baby. I love it. justin: Yeah. Just everybody yeah, just everybody's everybody's constantly smoking. Indoors, anywhere, everywhere. Zach Wheeler: All right, Hannah, what do you got? justin: for I mean the theme song really is all I got. practical effects were great. I could appreciate that from an artist standpoint. That's about it. I mean Justin Zach Wheeler: I'm I'm going with justin: and I talked about a lot of this, so a lot of my thoughts are also some of the things he's talked about. Zach Wheeler: But like I think you're good, I think you're right. I think it's like the outfits, the the you know, you've got the iconic ghost with the like slash through, like the logo justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: and slimer. And then like there's something about the way that 80s movies were filmed where it's like everything is kind of a little sunny and it just gives you the sense of like I don't know, it's like happy, or you're it it's a like a more I feel like there's so many movies these days that like they want to put like this like weird dark filter on the movies. That's digital versus practical film. Yeah. And like so justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: that like having that like bright, like cheery, home alone vibe to like watching this is like that's where it it takes me back is just like I like it. Even though it's like it's kooky and crazy and so I I I think that all of that stuff aged very well. Slimer, I love Yeah, I think I justin: Mm, yeah. Slimer. Zach Wheeler: I had The just the whole look, their Ghostbuster look, the Proton packs, the logo, the firehouse, the Yeah, the firehouse, the car, justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: the converted ambulance. Yeah, right. All that stuff is great. A hundred percent. Great thing. And then I also have the ghosts, justin: Yeah. Yeah. We both talked about the firehouse is so fun. Zach Wheeler: right? The marshmallow man, Slimer, the Librarian. They're really great designs. justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: Very un each one's very unique too, which I think is great. justin: Overall, I think you can really say like the creativity with this movie, creating everything, is is very it's impressive, all of the things that they came up with. Zach Wheeler: No, there really wasn't this like comma this comma. This comedy drama comma. But justin: Dramedy? Zach Wheeler: we're calling it we're calling it comma now. No, no, that's not not drama, it's a comma. Comedy drama comma. Comma drama. Comma llama drama. Comma drama. it's yeah, I think like this comedy, drama, science fiction combination. Well it's been done since like in and high budget, you know, high special effects comedy. It was pretty novel for the time, but I think even the concept of like ghost busting and like kinda like being kid friendly thing, like i they just don't make these type of movies at all since then, or before then or now. Well Zach and I were talking about justin: Relevant. Zach Wheeler: the kid friendly element of it. it's interesting because I feel like kid friendly is a push for some of the scenes in this movie where I'm like I would argue they're not kid friendly in some ways, but it was rated what P G? It's a red P G, yeah. And nowadays, justin: Mm, yeah. Zach Wheeler: like a P G movie is basically like Danny Go or blippy level. justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: Like there is like I think that in the eighties, like, there was a lot more of like all right, well, mom and dad wanna go watch this, so you're watching it. And we're gonna make it PG where it's not like terrible, but like they Yeah. Well they they talk about like the four quadrant movies where they're trying to get like everybody, right? Parents and kids and, you know, young single people and like those four quadrant movies that they're trying to catch capture everyone. And I feel like today the way they interpret four quadrant is we make it for kids first and we add elements that people would like as an adult. And this movie's the opposite. It's like it's an adult movie that kids can watch and they won't get everything. And they'll like more of it as they get older, or they'll get more of it as they get older. But but you know, there's enough in there for them to enjoy it, and it's really meant for adults. And I think they just don't make that movies anymore that like you you know, like I'm th we were talking about it, like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, right, you know, Jurassic Park, like all these movies are meant for adults. But yet Terminator even, Terminator's rated R, and they're selling action figures to Terminator. in eighty in eighty four, right? Like it's justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: just they're just not made where they're focused on the adults first, then the kids can just enjoy it. Right? And I think that justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: there's something like I miss about that type of movie. They just don't make any more. justin: Yeah, for sure. Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: Alright, some of the ones I had that are a little sillier. Egon said Print is dead. That was an eighty. I'm like, it's more dead than ever before. even though I'm writing down my notes on paper here. But you know, like I'm I'm I'm an exception. So alright. So justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: print is dead. I thought my age is great. Good good job, Egon. when we talked about lazy sigs. I had Rick Moranis and Sigorni Weaver. I just love them. They're so great. I want them to stay around forever. I have SNL cast movies, like I think just coming out of the nineteen seventy seven or seventies S N L cast and then like every generation I feel like, whether that's the Adam Sandler generation or like even the remake of this movie, well not my favorite, and we'll talk about it maybe in sequels, but like the you know, the the Christian Wig generation, like they come out with the you the bridesmaid generation. Like I do I love SNL movies. I think they just they're just great. I Dustin knows this. Eighties, seventies New York, just grubby, crime ridden New York. Love it. It's the best. Just the best in film. It's the best New York. I don't know. I don't wanna see like high fashion New York. Get out of here. I wanna I justin: It is the best version of New York by far. Zach Wheeler: wanna be nervous on the subway. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: And then I've had like I think like just the names of the villains and like when Rick Moranis is Vince and he's talking about like th th the the lore and you're like I you have no idea what he's talking about. But it's like the movie doesn't overexplain it. So the way they employ the lore of this movie is they're just they don't care. It doesn't matter, right? Like they're just they're just saying stuff. You don't have to worry about it. And I just miss like letting it wash over you. And it's fine. I don't need to have like justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: like a YouTube explain all video on like what Zool is and how the Gozer the Gozarian is something you know, like I don't care. Just let it wash over you. It's great. It's justin: It's like what Justin said in the beginning. Like it's not that deep. Zach Wheeler: not that deep. Who cares? It's just fun. It's just fun. I miss that stuff too. So I think like those are some of my I think outside of and then the last one I had was the the so the marketing of this movie because they didn't know what it was gonna be like this was like the first viral marketing campaign so their first poster they didn't first they didn't know the movie was gonna be called go Ghostbusters because Ghostbusters was already a thing and so they were kind of stealing the name so they had to get the rights to Ghostbusters so they were like they didn't know how to market it. So the marketing team was like don't put it on the poster. So the poster was only the black background and the logo with the ghost with the X through it. I just justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: think like and it kinda like got like buzzed, like, what's this about? What's going on? Dan Ackery's involved and Bill Murray's involved. It's like this kinda like viral marketing campaign that that that this movie implemented for the first time, I think age is the best too. It's like kinda how all marketing tries to implement in a lot of ways. justin: Yeah, yeah, it's a good colour. Zach Wheeler: Alright, let's get to age the worst. All of Inkman's jokes. It's so worse. You didn't like the menstruation joke, but how the girl was menstruating now, okay. That was a good that it age well? justin: Literally like Peter Venckman is the is age the worst, that's all. Period. Next next one. What's the next category, Zach? Zach Wheeler: I think I think like we we we've solved it. That's what it was. I had I had I had card card catalogs in a library. So many people would not know what that is when all the cards are shooting out of the out of the catalogue. justin: Mm. But those special effects were real good. I was like, How did they do that? Zach Wheeler: Yeah, the Yeah, like the the practical stuff when it's in camera, but then the composite stuff, a lot of the ghosts look good. The dogs look frickin' terrible. When they're running around. Ugh, yeah, just not aging well. Yeah, the justin: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Almost like stop motion or something, like made out of clay or something. Justin, what about you? I had alright, I think the most egregious thing, during the montage scene, Ray gets a blowy from a ghost and it just it Zach Wheeler: yeah. Yeah. justin: liter it just comes out of nowhere. And there there is no I don't know, there's no precedent for it, like Zach Wheeler: So that that's a real Dan Aykroyd story. He thinks that really happened to him. He that's real life inspiration. He It was actually an extended justin: What? What? Okay, well at least there's like something, 'cause we were both like, what the fuck? Zach Wheeler: it was actually a full scene that they were like, we gotta just cut it out for time and justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: suck it in the montage. justin: It just you wanna talk about whiplash, like you're going through this really fun montage scene and then it just like rips you back and you're like, What is happening? Like w Yeah. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: No, I agree. It's terrible. Why even include And they're all like sleeping in the same room, like a fire hall, basically. And I'm like, this dude is j what is h w and also you did you not capture that ghost? This is just a loose ghost that you need to Dan Aykroyd BJ right there. There that's right. I have a I have justin: It's a nice one, yeah, therefore. Zach Wheeler: also the ghost BJ WTF like on there in my notes. Like what out of the blue, completely out of the blue. And then just justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: like no one talks about it and it's like moved on. We're we're done. justin: Yeah. I mean it it Zach Wheeler: And I pull it up on on she's number one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine? She's number nine on the cast list. It's the dream ghost. justin: That's true. Zach Wheeler: It's the BJ ghost. Like, so it's really impactful, but it was also justin: It must have been really memorable. Yeah. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: like, what is happening? justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, no, that was a weird one, for sure. So I had d D justin: Anything else? Zach Wheeler: Dana's apartment not being open concept. Like her kitchen is closed off. Ugh, gross, get outta here. justin: no no. did you see the way that the couch and the chairs match the drapes? That was obviously custom. Zach Wheeler: Is incredible. Well I'm not saying it's not an expensive apartment. I mean she is a celloist at a you she must have been a very successful symphony player, but the the the kitchen was closed off. Ugh. I want my open concept. Where's my island, you know? justin: I'm glad that that's on the same list as Peter Venckman. Yeah. Uh-huh. Zach Wheeler: Not in the 80s, baby. Yeah, age the worst. Not an open concept floor plan. Dana. So I had every other song except for the Ghostbusters theme. Like every time a song plays, I'm like, this song sucks. Right? Like it's they justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: were all terrible. But I think I I'm going to add the Ghostbusters theme. S to this. Age the worst? Yes. Not because the song justin: All right, you've been you and the podcast is done. Zach Wheeler: No no no. All right. No no. justin: Alright, what's your evidence? Yes, it is. Convince me Zach Wheeler: Okay, here's the justin: convince us otherwise because our two year old will obviously disagree as well. Zach Wheeler: Okay. So this as a placeholder there's a song I Want a New Truck, I think, by Huey Lewis in the News that was used for like the editing of this film and part of the inspiration. It is just the the the beat is just this song. So like justin: Hm. Zach Wheeler: completely s Ray Parker Junior stole it. To the point where Huey Lewis in the News sued them. 'Cause they didn't and they won like five million dollars. Okay, so so justin: shit. Zach Wheeler: it was like copyright. And there's another song that like literally sounds like the chorus. That's not even the worst part. So not only did he like plagiarize the beat and all that stuff of the song, the you know, when they sing like, who you gonna call? It's like a group of girls like singing. That is Ray Parker girlfri Ray Parker's girlfriend and her friends. They are seventeen year old high schoolers. Ray is t like twenty-three, twenty-four years old. Well when you have the backstory like that, now it justin: Mm. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: is it's not feeling so good anymore. So it's a plagiarized song with justin: Mm. I mean it's Zach Wheeler: minors in it that he was dating. justin: Yeah, but Gene aren't all the good songs kinda the same? I mean, let's be honest. They all they all kinda do that. Zach Wheeler: All right, fine. I'll you gu I'll defend Wegman. You guys defend the guy who was, you know Dating a seventeen justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: year old. The man that was dating a seventeen year old. You guys good. Okay, I'll I c I g I can live with that. So there was there was a lot of controversy justin: Same same. Way to go. Zach Wheeler: over the song was my point at the time, right? It got, you know justin: Way to go, Zach. You just ruined our two year old's happiness. I hope you're proud of yourself. Zach Wheeler: So Alright, let's get to WTF what they talk about. This is a category where we kind of like highlight anything that because of the time that has passed, like justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: I don't understand what they're talking about, what they're referencing. justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: I have one off the sorry, I'm like skipping line over here. No no no no no no Carly, go ahead. You justin: yeah. No. Mm mm, no. Zach Wheeler: the when they were getting on the elevator and it was just this old guy and he looked over and he's like, What are you, cosmonauts? Like that was something that like we don't we don't talk about cosmonauts anymore. It's not really a thing. justin: Mm mm. Yeah, yeah, it's a good one. Yeah, it's a good one. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: And then he made a reference of like think think like your J. Egger Hoover. Yeah, the J. Egg or Hoover reference. justin: yeah. Zach Wheeler: Definitely Gen Z is like hoop. Hoop? What? justin: Way over my head. We had nothing under under these notes. It was pretty easy to understand. Zach Wheeler: Okay, perfect. Perfect. Then I I was I came ready. I just hur I was like, Ooh, cosmonauts, write it down. So there there's justin: Did you hang on real quick, Carly, did you have to watch this movie in subtitles? Zach Wheeler: Yes. justin: You did? Do you wa do you have to watch everything in subtitles with him? Zach Wheeler: We watch we watch everything in subtitles. Is that weird? justin: But does it does it bother you? Or are you used to it? Zach Wheeler: No, I think I'm so used to it and I do read I do read some things. What is this a is this a point of contention? Do you guys talk about this? justin: W I think we talked about it like very, very early on cause Zach let loose that he watches everything in subtitles. And I I've n I the only thing I ever watch in subtitles is if it's like forced foreign language and it like auto populates. 'Cause I c I can't. Zach Wheeler: I think it's yeah, no, we I think it's because we've been together for at this point like I mean we've been married almost ten years and together like almost twenty. Almost twenty. So maybe justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: it just doesn't even register to my brain anymore that like that's 'cause I'm not like a I'm not a T V or movie watcher much. So it's like what whatever's on is on. But no, we always have subtles titles on, always. justin: Hard no for him. That is wild. I I mean I can't do it 'cause then I I if I see words I have to read the words. But then I can't focus on the what's happening on the screen, so I just can't. It's like Zach Wheeler: Wha why do you do it? I do it 'cause like I don't wanna miss something. And so like I'm I I'm able to look past them. And then when I don't Yeah, I'm able to look past justin: That's such a Zach answer. Zach Wheeler: them and then I'm like, I can look down if I missed what they were saying and like catch back up and like or like I can't understand them 'cause of an accent or something. justin: Mm, that's a good point. I guess I bring all this up. The context behind this Zach Wheeler: But you have to look be able to look past it. justin: is like whenever we get to what are they talking about, I usually never have anything. Because I mean there there's a handful of stuff. If it's like a super super old movie, but like anything I feel like from like the seventies and up, I never have anything. But Zach always has a laundry list because he watches in subtitles and he sees every Zach Wheeler: Ha ha ha. justin: every word that comes across. Zach Wheeler: Because he's reading the movie he's watching at the same time. That's what it is. No the Well I justin: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Big brain over there. Zach Wheeler: don't know about well I mean if you insist. But no, the the I had okay, so when after they first defeat Gozer and they're like, did we do it? Did we do it? Right when they like you know, she disappears. in celebration, Venckman's like, We sh it's Miller time. Which is totally an 80s reference to Miller light, right? Like Miller beer. justin: Mm. Mm. Zach Wheeler: but like people would not get that today, I feel like. That's like a pretty dated reference to Miller time. And then justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: one thing 'cause Venckman talks a lot of like, you know, s techno or not techno, but like mm paranormal babble, if they're for lack of a better word. Like he's always doing paranormal speak about events and things and everything. And he brings up one event, the Tacunga the I'm gonna butcher the how to say it. The Tecungus event or the Tecungus blast of nineteen nine. And justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: that was the first one that he mentioned that I recognized. 'Cause it's a meteorite hit in like middle of Russia. justin: Nerd alert I didn't know this. Zach Wheeler: 'Cause it's like one of the biggest meteorite impacts that we've had in written history and it was justin: Okay. Zach Wheeler: in the middle of Siberian Russia and I was like I'm like, wait, okay. justin: Okay, I'm gonna lift this up. Zach Wheeler: So I heard that and I was like, wait. Is does that me justin: What's it called? Zach Wheeler: does that mean that the Tekung The Takung it's T U N G U S K A. Tecungus? Tekung? Tecungus? justin: Tan Tunguska event? Zach Wheeler: Tunguska, thank you. That's a better way of saying it. God, I'm butchering it. Tunguska. I don't justin: I mean I'm just googling over here. Zach Wheeler: know, Siberian meteorite attack, right? But he like references justin: Okay. Zach Wheeler: it as like a potential's paranormal event. But it's real, right? I'm like, wait a second. Does that mean I mean, this is related to the dialogue dialogue past. No no not even. No, okay, anyway. That's just missing people in the middle of Siberia. But but my point was like I heard that is at the end of the movie and I'm like, wait, does that mean that everything Ray is referencing is real? And so I went back and did research on like what the stuff that Ray is referencing, and Dan Aykroyd is a huge, like, paranormal believer, and his whole family is. And so he grew up with this stuff. So everything that's written in the movie is like real things that people believe off real events. So he's like he's not making justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: it up for the sake of the movie. Like It's I it's made up. Let's be real. But like it's I justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: I I just really interesting to me that like all the techno babble or the paranormal babble is like real paranormal babble. Like they really did their research and to make it it not necessarily real, but believable that what they were doing was real to the paranormal community. And like to history justin: Ooh. Zach Wheeler: and to real things. Which I thought was really interesting. I was like, this is pretty cool. justin: Yeah, I can appreciate that. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, so I'm like WTF, what is Ray talking about the whole time? So Alright, and I had some I had some good jokes. I I just some of this for this category we don't have a lot 'cause like it's a relatively modern movie. I was like justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: I had some just two jokes. We talked about the guy who th my two favorite ones were like that yeah, he's like yes, it's true. He doesn't have a dick. I loved it, I thought it was hilarious. I'd burst out laughing. justin: Hmm. Zach Wheeler: And then the part where she's when when she's like yeah, when Venckman like, Yeah, I can already tell there's two people inside you. I don't need to be you know, I don't need justin: So gross. Zach Wheeler: I loved it. I thought it was hilarious. Along those lines You laugh, Carly, don't do that. Along those lines, whenever she turned into like the dog creature and he was like, ugh and it reminded me of you know how like when girls were like, Would you love me if I were a worm? Have you heard that, Hannah? It's like, Would you love me if I was a worm? It's like, Would you love justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: me if I was like a ghost possessed ghost dog? And the answer is no, he was not into it. So I will say. justin: Hm. Zach Wheeler: Alright, let's get into sequels. This is our next category where we pitch potential sequels or maybe we'll discuss the actual sequels 'cause there's a lot actually in this universe. or maybe what happened the next day. justin: Yeah. Well I mean like there's only isn't there only like Ghostbusters two with like the original cast, right? I know they re redid movies like over a few years ago, but Zach Wheeler: So there's five movies in the Ghostbuster Ouvre. justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: There's Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters Two, which is a direct sequel to this, came out five years later. Is this it sucks. and then there's two thousand sixteen All Females Ghostbuster. and then there is Twenty One's Ghostbuster Afterlife, and then I think twenty three or twenty four was Frozen Empire. but Afterlife and Frozen Empire d are sequels to this universe of movies where it's Is that with the Kristen Wigg group? No, the Kristen Wigg one is like it's as if it never happened. It's like a remake, like a reboot. Where the other justin: Hmm. Mm. Zach Wheeler: two are direct references to the first two movies. And in fact the the whole cast is in both of those, by the way, Justin. They're not in it justin: Hm, okay. Zach Wheeler: the whole time. They're not the main cast, but they are in the movies. justin: Like I know yeah, I remember when they remade it and they weren't like the main characters. But then didn't Zach Wheeler: Mm-hmm. justin: they make one that was like with some kids, like a new generation of Ghostbusters or something? Zach Wheeler: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So that one is so a Harold Ramis dies in two thousand fourteen, I think. and the the afterlife movie, it's about a haunted house in the middle of like Arizona or Kansas or somewhere, middle Midwest. And it's Harold Ramis' ghost Egon's ghost possessing the house. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: And the rest of the cast shows up and they defend off it's like he's like a good ghost in it. He's like but he is the ghost of it and it focuses on his granddaughter and then a new cast of characters including Paul Rudd. It's not bad. The first one, after life, it's not bad. It's ringing a bell, justin: Mm. So Zach Wheeler: but I don't even know if I was that the Frozen Empire It's Okay. Okay, yeah. Yeah. Good, sorry. justin: Well, I guess for the sake of like what would the sequel be to this, it would just be Ghostbusters two. Which I've never seen it, so I don't know what happens in Ghostbusters Two. I might like it then. Zach Wheeler: Trash. Venckman and Sigorni Weaver have a kid in it, if that's any indication about where this is going. Not shocked. The main villain is like a it's like a justin: Yeah, next. Zach Wheeler: he's like a mids he's like a like a Renaissance esque like Henry the Eighth, like aristocrat, but he's like possessing a painting, he's like and he's like pink goo. It's not good. It's not a good movie. justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: It's a complete cash grab. They took the lessons from this movie of like big budget, Hollywood success, like and they like it was like the first version of like just bust out the sequel and try to make money. Right? It was like the complete cash grab. justin: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: Anyone have a pitch for like a sequel though? justin: Venkman pushes things too far, goes to jail, becomes a registered sex Zach Wheeler: Yeah. justin: offender. and then he he can't be a part of the Ghostbusters anymore. no, I don't know. I don't know what a decent sequel would be. I mean, 'cause like I was just gonna say that and then Janine jumps in. Yes. Zach Wheeler: I think you need a Janine storyline. Just bring Janine back into it. Yeah, have her jump in and be like, I'm you know what, you guys are I'm gonna recruit some of you, but the rest of you are you're messing this up. We gotta like get her, get Winston involved more. He wasn't in in it enough. Feel like he needed to be in it more. Mm-hmm. 'Cause he brought a good justin: Mm. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: like balance and like he was the most like stable of all four of them. I feel like he was like justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: the most grounded Ghostbusters. Yeah, he's like the the the audience POV. He's like shit. He's like, What in the Yeah, like what the justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: world? Like so get Janine going in there more. And like I look, Lewis was ki he wasn't my favorite, and you liked him. But I'll say I'll say bring Lewis in, bring him back. Bring Lewis in more and justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: let's get him into the next one. Yeah. justin: Hm. Agreed. Yeah. Maybe as the main character, I don't know. Zach Wheeler: And it's like, let's get rid of Vinkman. He's outta here. Do like an office justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: style series where they're like it's just the inner workings of the of the of the firehouse. I would love that. And like have him like just justin: That'd be fun. Zach Wheeler: look to camera whenever something is being done. It's never about the missions going out. Like it's them leaving and then them coming back, but you never see the actual mission, right? You know? Vinkman says something justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: and Janine like looks at the camera and is like, Are you kidding me? I think that would be good. The only like office moment is like when So Gordon Weaver's character like shows up the first time and she's like, How can I help you? And and Venckman like pokes his head up and like runs and like jumps over the Yeah. justin: That was funny. Zach Wheeler: But that was like the only office moment. No, justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: I think like honestly for me I don't think this needs a sequel. I think you said everything that you need to say in this universe in this first movie and like I don't know if it's untouchable. I think a lot of people would consider this like an untouchable classic and like it's just been ruined by the IP that's the IPness of it being dragged through all the remakes and everything. I do think the two thousand one one is decent. And it's interesting. They go completely different. It's outside of New York, it's on a farm, there's like a Hellmouth or something for those, you know, Buffy fans that's there. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: but like it's i it it's interesting. Like I think you have to go like If ghost busting is the concept, just do paranormal investigating completely unrelated to the New York crew. Cause like I don't know if like justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: the characters especially like the Ghostbusters themselves, I think you you would want to include. But like in the sequel they bring back Segourney Weaver, they bring back Rick Moranus to your point, right? They bring back like all the supplementary characters and they're like th they don't have business being there. And it's like they just felt like justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: they had to do that in the eighties. So yeah, I think I I don't know if this movie needs a sequel to my in my opinion. I think, you know Like we're good we're good where we're at. We've seen justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: we've seen what we need to see. The EP the EPA shut them down and their building blew up. They were going a bankrupt. So they're just it's just them begging on the street for money, right? You know, they can't get a job 'cause justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: Columbia fired them, so no one's gonna hire them, you know. They're gonna be at like, you know, mid mid New York State tech or whatever, so doing paranormal research. Alright, let's get to the last category, which is the most fun in my opinion. Hot takes, justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: nitpicks, anything you want to talk about the movie that, you know, you're just like, this just doesn't sit right with me. justin: Well, there's a lot of things that we know don't sit right. But we've covered Zach Wheeler: Well yeah. justin: that. We've covered that. Justin? Zach Wheeler: All right. Hannah Hannah do you you wanna go first or Justin? justin: You go first. Okay. well, most of mine we've already covered, revolving around Bankman. And Yep, enough said there. the sexualized Sojourney Weaver as a demon surviving the final battle scene with the giant explosion. Mm-hmm. That was one of Justin's. It's a big one. Like how how how are they alive? after the massive explosion. Like the in the in the entire Zach Wheeler: They hid behind the wall. Yeah, they're all on the roof and I'm like, no. justin: the entire building exploded. I mean like they pan out to have city shot. And like you can see this explosion that's like as wide as the building is tall, but somehow they just covered in marshmallow. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, th that's because they're behind the wall. I don't know I don't know what the problem with that is. justin: Yeah, there you go. What else did you have? I had s you touched on it earlier, Zach, but Egon and Janine just randomly have some kind of romantic relationship towards the end of the movie. I mean it's fine. I like it makes more sense when you give the background that like there was a bigger plot thread of them getting romantically involved, but it just comes out of nowhere. their ghost containment device at their headquarters can literally be turned off with one very easily accessible switch. Just really bad design. which cost a massive explosion and put the entire city at risk, but you just have to just pull it down. and then my last one The police allowed a very large crowd to gather around the building where all of the shit was going down. that just super incompetent. I think you need to evacuate everybody within several blocks. Zach Wheeler: No, you you y at least a couple bloc a couple of blocks, you know. That's fair. No, how are people not how there not like a mass casualty list underneath the justin: yeah. Zach Wheeler: on the street level from all the stuff that was falling off of the building? I agree. A hundred percent. justin: Yeah. I mean when the when the Ghostbusters got there, the ground literally opened up and almost killed them. So if you think about you Zach Wheeler: Ha ha ha. justin: know, like if there was just a group of civilians just standing right there, I mean you could have had a whole group of people die. so yeah. Zach Wheeler: No, they c they like climbed out. So but everyone was like, I think they're dead. Think the Ghostbusters are gone. That's true. justin: Mm hmm. Yep. No. So it was mine. Not a not an exhaustive list. I mean I feel like we really beat the dead horse on Bakeman. but yeah, some of those are pretty bad. Zach Wheeler: See you guys gotta like Bankman, then you can get past him and then you can see all the other flaws. justin: Okay. Zach Wheeler: What do you got, Carly? I I had the one I had was it was right before that scene, but it was basically they were all incarcerated and then they went to like a full police justin: yeah. Zach Wheeler: escort to get them to the building. So it was just like what a juxtaposition. We have been like in jail and now we are on our way. And you're right, like they're like, It's all right, everyone, just come check it out. There's just like an insane ghost. But the mayor was gonna lose constituents. Yeah, and and it's like it's like you've got the like justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: they're like the new presidents of the United States like coming through with this like full escort. And so that one definitely stuck out to me. Yeah, I had in the jail that speaking of that scene, I had them like they had the maps and they're looking at the maps, like you're not gonna take the maps away from them before they put in jail. Like where did they get the justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: math while they sitting in jail? They had a table. I'm like, do they do do are tables normally in cells? Like holding cells? I'm just saying usually they take the personal items off of you, you know? They're like, Here's a blueprint of the city. Let's just check this out real quick. Just a little nitpick on that. But justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: no, like you said, I think like the the Vigma thing obviously we've talked about and I I I I like Bill Murray a lot and like we're giving him a hard time and I think that's what the character is there for is like he it's easy to give him a hard time because he's just a turd and so you're just like, justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: dude, what? But I the only other thing I wrote down was if Zack treated me like that during a possession, we would have issues because he's like You're good, girl. I gotta go. I gotta go. No, no, no. But then he's like, I she's fine. justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: I gotta I gotta run. There's other things. He sedates her with the drugs he brought. And then she's just chilling in that apartment, and then it's like, Well this apartment's probably gonna explode and all things but that that was the only that was the last thing on Vinkman. I was just like you're not even like a little justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: like a little cool compress on the forehead or anything. We're just like, you gotta get. What's going on? justin: There were no crackers next to the bed. Hmm. Zach Wheeler: No. I g yeah, she was not doing well at that point. I don't know, I don't know what's wrong with you yet. So here I've I have two broad ones. Would after the first Ghostbusing event, like they become famous, like USA Today is publishing articles, Larry David's tal not Larry David, Larry King is talking about them. Would they really become famous from this? Like they're ghostbusting they're gonna be crackpots. Like justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: I don't know if they're like Saving New York City? No, no, no, no, no, no. Not from not from not from not not justin: I mean it would be Zach Wheeler: from Gozer the Go the Gozarian. I'm saying when they do like the hotel hi like thing and they do the they have the montage immediately afterwards and they're like the most famous ghost hunters in the country, everyone's justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: like I don't know if I believe it a hundred percent. justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: I my other one was like, in the first place, how were these guys ever hired by Columbia University? Like who's publishing them? justin: Mm. Zach Wheeler: No, no we you g par Columbia has a paranormal wing? What are you talking about? Get out of here. I don't know. All right. But my main list, I have a Dana list of like just things that are like Okay, let's go. So we're gonna st we're gonna talk about Dana's apartment when they arrive after she's been away for a few days because of the haunting. And the eggs are still on the counter. You know that apartment reeks. Like those eggs are rotten at that point, like they're just in there like, justin: Mm. yeah. Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: it's a goo. Look at the eggs. I'm like, ugh. Well he comments about the eggs. Yeah, but he didn't he didn't comment about how bad they would be reeking and smelling by that point. Two days of eggs just crushed on her t-I'm just saying. There's justin: Yeah, but they got bigger fish to fry, yeah. I mean Zach Wheeler: a f it's not just saying, like a little comment, okay? That's all I'm asking for. I also want to call out about the kitchen, by the way, justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: not to like go circle back to this kitchen open concept plan, but I had a apartment justin: Hmm. Zach Wheeler: that was very similar w in Knoxville and it was just this like old apartment and my kitchen. You could tell he had taken the door off, so there was no door anymore, but it was a totally a little tiny little diner room just like that. That I loved that kitchen. I don't know. I justin: Ha ha. Zach Wheeler: I would love to know, like 'cause she's a cello symphony player. She has a like a a corner apartment on like the fiftieth floor overlooking West End. Like that's like celebrity area of New York City. But justin: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Zach Wheeler: how's she affording that? All right, you know, what just needs to be said. So how's she afford That's why I'm telling you, she's not a gold digger. justin: Mm? Yeah. Zach Wheeler: She must have been the air. She has her own thing going on. That's why she was interested justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: in d in in Bill Murray after he saw her, 'cause she's like, I gotta get I gotta get more money coming in here, okay? 'Cause I can't afford that. Well justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: you don't think she's just like independently wealthy on her own. Do you think she's like she's a cello player. I mean, like maybe she's the world's most renowned cello player and she can afford it. justin: There's also no possibility of generational wealth. Zach Wheeler: That's what that's what I'm saying. I'm just saying justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: once B becomes famous, she's like, Well maybe I can afford my apartment still. All right. My last one. This is my biggest nitpick. 'Cause you guys talked about how like Dana's possessed and it's she's over sexualized, okay? But the at the end of the day justin: This was her fault. Zach Wheeler: They open No, no, no, no, no, no, no. No. Well what is she wearing? My That is my biggest nitpick. Where did she get the orange dressed? Like did Dana own that beforehand? And Zul justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: is like I'm gonna go put this dress on. Okay, inherently there's nothing justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: wrong with the dress. Inherently There's nothing it's that's like that that's like a dress you're gonna wear justin: No, it's the Zach Wheeler: to go to the clerk. Like you know, everyone's got a like a fun dress. But Vince takes over Rick Moranis' Rick Moranis, right? And he's just running around with the shirt unbuttoned, like he doesn't, you know, it doesn't change. Zool's like, I'm gonna go put on justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: something sexy and do my makeup and like and I'm like I'm just saying, like, what is Zool doing? Just looking for the gatekeeper. They're clearly like, you're like, I'm just the gatekeeper and the key master are like, it doesn't matter. We don't care what what it is, we're just gonna do it. To bring out gozer or whatever, right? And sh but sh somehow she goes into da into the wardrobe. Into her wardrobe and does her makeup. I'm just saying, like, what's Zool doing over there, right? Zool's a little fabulous. Yeah. I'm just like, did she own this dress? Did she like Yeah. justin: She was feeling herself. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Listen, you gotta look good if you're gonna be bad. Zach Wheeler: I will say though, her makeup was like gaunt. A like it wasn't like I feel like she looked it she looked possessed. Like they weren't trying it wasn't justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: glam. it was like it was like glam possessed. Like she had like sparkles on. I mean there was there was there was glam zest. She was glam zest, okay? I'm just saying, like, Zul was doing a lot for what she to who who had no idea. Yeah. justin: Listen, Zool had an agenda. Zach Wheeler: I'm just saying like Zool's like, I don't even care at this point. I'm just trying to look good. This is an ancient bean, okay? Possesses and be like, I'm gonna go into her wardrobe and see what we can find. And like also like Do you own this dress like this little sequin? justin: Maybe Zool just wanted to appreciate being in somebody else's body and she just wanted to have some fun. Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. She's trying to vibe. She's like, I orange looks good on me. Like whatever. I justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: like where we're sticking up for Zool too. Like, it's fine. Let yeah, yeah, let Zool live. Like, wait, what? justin: Bankman's socks bozzo is okay. Zach Wheeler: Yeah, if anyone Zul is the one who's like perpetrating like, you know, No, you know what I think it is. I I wanna say I don't even know. I mean Vinkmints, whatever, he's got but I think we honestly just like fighting with you, Zach. I think that's our favorite our favorite thing. We just wanna justin: Favorite pastime. Zach Wheeler: be contrarian. Yeah. Or maybe you do. justin: You know hey, you know who else is wearing an orange dress tonight, Zachary? You you are wearing an orange dress tonight, are you not? Zach Wheeler: I'm First of all, today's giving Dana. We're recording on a Saturday. So we all went to the University of Tennessee. God forbid justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: I'm supporting our my alum you know as an alumni on the week on a game day week. my god, you guys I hate everyone. justin: I don't know. I just think it's kinda coincidental that you're giving Dana shit for wearing a a sexy orange dress and you're wearing a sexy orange shirt tonight. Zach Wheeler: And yours is also off the shoulder too. I know like the the listeners justin: Mm-hmm. A little bit. Zach Wheeler: can't they can't see it. I am wearing a t shirt. You have a very off the off the justin: Ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: shoulder shiny Vols get up going on. It's it's look, I'm it's a t shirt, okay? It says the University of Tennessee on it, and it's, you know. Yeah, it's Glam's U. I feel like I'm possessed by how much justin: It's glam zest. What are our other categories? Zach Wheeler: So now we're at the end of our podcast, right? Anyone else have any other nitpicks or things they want to point out? Alright. So we're at the end of the podcast, which means now we're gonna rate it, whether or not we think this should be a classic. Justin, why don't you kick us off? justin: No. I think you need to go first tonight, big orange. Zach Wheeler: Alright. So There's there's one other thing I want to talk about that really colors this movie for me that we have not discussed. And it's the way like what it did to the studio system and like the blockbuster culture in the United States. So before this, there was like no summer blockbuster I there was summer blockbusters. Like Jaws is probably considered the first summer blockbuster. But this is like the first like IPable thing that They really like and it just over the eighties, eighty four, eighty five, eighty six, you start getting these like sequels and you start getting into this cash grab and they really figure out the system and it I think for the worst. And like one thing about this movie, they used like so I told you like how the name Ghostbusters was not theirs, right? It was another series in the seventies. And so they worked out a deal where like they got part of the profitability of this movie. And they did like classic Hollywood accounting to say like despite this movie being the second largest movie all time. not all time of of nineteen eighty four. A thirty million dollar budget making two hundred and eighty million dollars or whatever made. They somehow made it work out on their books to being zero profitability. So that they didn't have to pay this company anything. And like to me, like this is I love this movie for nostalgia. I think Vankman is problematic, I agree with you guys. But like justin: Thank God. Zach Wheeler: but like for me, like what this movie did is it just like it built this system. It took the the joy of going to the movies and like made it a system. And like that part I just cannot forgive it for. It really bugs me. Like how just saturated the IP of things become. And this movie is like one of the first ones to really do that. C it's not like Star Wars is built for sequels, right? Or like Jaws, maybe not so much, but like this movie, like they really come up with this idea that just poisons a lot of movies for me. And I just I justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: I really hate the lessons I learned from this movie. I really hate it. And for me, like it just it really colors the movie for me. So I'm gonna go with it's not a classic. I like this movie a lot. I have a lot of nostalgia for it. But I I I if they never make another freaking Ghostbusters movie again, I don't give a shit. That's what I'm saying. Like I do justin: Ha ha ha ha. Zach Wheeler: not care. I do not need any more Ghostbusters in my life at all. so I I think it's not a classic for me. It's fine. It's a good movie that I really enjoy from nostalgia, but I recognize this guy it's problematic and I think what it did to studios and the lessons they learn from it are the complete wrong lessons. Carly, what do you think? I'm like, I swear if we get haunted after this now and then we meet a Ghostbuster, I'm gonna be so mad. By the ghost of Paramount? What are you talking about? No, I think justin: Hmm Zach Wheeler: that I forget who said it earlier, but it it was like in terms of a Halloween classic, and I know it wasn't made to be like a Halloween movie, but I think that there are sparse Halloween classics, really, that I would call. So Maybe if I were to categorize it in that sense, I would go, Okay, but it's also not one that I'm gonna be like, I gotta watch that every single year. And to me that's justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: what a like a classic is more than anything, is like, do I wanna watch it again? And so I I don't know justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: that I wanna watch this again. So maybe I'll go, yeah, it's fun, but probably not like a classic ultimately for me. justin: Mm-hmm. Zach Wheeler: What about you, Lou? What about Lou what about you, Lou? justin: Lou agrees. I hope you didn't hear her licking her asshole like four minutes ago. But I was like Zach Wheeler: Ha ha ha ha. I hope you didn't hear me licking my assholes. justin: Yeah, Carly, I agree with you. I feel like I don't need to watch it again. Therefore it's not a classic. But the theme song fucking slaps. Theme song, absolute Halloween banger. Every year. Stop, quit it. Zach Wheeler: Yeah. Yep. I love those seven hero backup singers. No, you're right. You're right though. It's like I know. Like listen, for like the the per the lay person who's just like, I like the song. It's a good song. Like I'm not gonna dig into this song stuff, whatever. I totally agree. Put justin: Yeah. Zach Wheeler: it on the playlist. I'll listen to that playlist every Halloween. I'll have that thing rolling. But like are we gonna put it on T V? Probably not. I'm just sorry I'm more woke than you guys. It's okay. It's fine. justin: well yeah, I agree with both of y'all. I think well I guess Zachary, you two, but probably not a classic, but I put it in like, you know, good Halloween movies, into that list. 'Cause I do think I don't know, when you think about like Halloween movies, scary movies, I think you have especially among millennials There's a camp of us that like we grew up with Disney Channel movies and all the things, right? But I think general Halloween movies are usually rated R, they're very scary. Zach Wheeler: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. justin: you know, you only have a handful of like family friendly stuff, and outside of ghost blowies in this movie, it is relatively family friendly. So, you know, I do think it gets credit in that area, but so Halloween classic, yes. Regular classic, no. Zach Wheeler: Alright, good. That's a good answer. Alright, well, hey, Hannah and Carly. Thank you guys so much for joining us. I it was a lot of fun. I hope it was fun. I hope I wasn't like sometimes justin: It was fun. Zach Wheeler: I can be a little overpowering. I know I'm annoying. So I I hope I wasn't too annoying. No. We'll just we'll just let the audio justin: No, you're just a nerd, but it's cool. We like you. Zach Wheeler: we'll let our like the one person who emails us tell us how. Yeah, let them let them fill you in on how you are. justin: Yeah.
