- 3:31And his good evening to you is Harry Carrey.
- 3:33Thank you, Jack.
- 3:37Hello again, everybody.
- 3:38All set to play baseball here.
- 3:40The rains have blown away.
- 3:42They certainly cut me into our attendance.
- 3:46It rained all afternoon and boy, I need some rain.
- 3:49Now our national anthem.
- 4:19The national anthem.
- 4:39The national anthem.
- 5:00The national anthem.
- 5:20Now we're all set to go.
- 5:22Now in the other games, Cleveland leads at Boston 4-0 at the end of two.
- 5:27Baltimore, New York,
- 5:29a close score at the end of four and a half.
- 5:36This afternoon, the Mets broke their 17-game losing streak,
- 5:40edging the Cubs 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.
- 5:44The second game was probably the end of eight innings with the Cubs winning 3-2.
- 5:50Philadelphia Cincinnati just getting underway.
- 5:53Los Angeles and Houston later.
- 5:55Pittsburgh and Milwaukee just about to get started.
- 6:04Well, Jim Toomey had an early needle going.
- 6:07He just apologized to the gentleman from San Francisco for not having any wind blowing.
- 6:14Well, I was really giving one of the great guys of baseball, Eddie Flanning,
- 6:21the traveling secretary of the Giants for many, many years a real needle for wearing a topcoat to the ballpark.
- 6:28And man, this is not San Francisco. You don't need that here.
- 6:33Here is Chuck Keller, the second baseman hitting 281 from McHenry, Illinois.
- 6:38No homers in 20 runs about a day.
- 6:41First pitch by Bob Gibson is high and outside.
- 6:52One ball, no strikes.
- 6:54Group of some 60 from Belleville, Illinois, out here honoring Red Cheney tonight.
- 7:03Here is the pitch to Hillaryncy Strykoff.
- 7:07That is a stockholder in a bowling alley, and also the employees of the bowling alley are here.
- 7:14One ball and one strike.
- 7:17The pitch to Hillaryncy.
- 7:18Foul back and out of play, strike two.
- 7:21Ladies' Day tomorrow.
- 7:23Doubleheaders Sunday.
- 7:30And Ray Sedecki will pitch for the Cardinals tomorrow afternoon.
- 7:36All the interesting.
- 7:38Here is the pitch to Hiller High.
- 7:40Two balls, two strikes.
- 7:42There are some who think that this situation might have been just what this youngster needed to do.
- 7:51Get them started.
- 7:53Two balls, two strikes to wind, and here is the pitch.
- 7:57Ooh, barely missed with a fastball inside.
- 8:00All prior, the playdump fire.
- 8:02Augie Donatelli at first.
- 8:03Frank Sicori at second, and Tony Benzon at third.
- 8:08Three balls, two strikes.
- 8:09Here is the pitch.
- 8:11Lined in the center.
- 8:12Flood goes back.
- 8:13He's there waiting.
- 8:14Makes the catch.
- 8:16Hiller lined the flood in center field.
- 8:19And that's one man away.
- 8:21Here's Willie Mays hitting second.
- 8:28Willie McCovey will be next.
- 8:30Then Orlando Cepeda, then Felipe Lou, then Jimmy Davenport.
- 8:37Boy, you've got to get good pitching to be peaceful.
- 8:42Here's the first pitch now to Mays when it's outside.
- 8:47One ball to no strikes.
- 8:49One man out.
- 8:51A ball game in the first.
- 8:54There's the pitch and he's swung and missed, and the count is in.
- 8:58Mays with 19 homers, 49 runs.
- 9:01About it is.
- 9:04Straddles a plate wide.
- 9:06Bob Gibson gets set.
- 9:07Here's the pitch.
- 9:09Curveball knocked out of the way.
- 9:13Willie Mays.
- 9:16One of the great stars of baseball.
- 9:22Willie now 31 years old.
- 9:24Here's the pitch.
- 9:26A little bit low.
- 9:28All three.
- 9:30Gibson really pumping that ball hard.
- 9:32He's had Mays giving ground up the plate.
- 9:36Now he's down to three balls and a strike.
- 9:39Here it is.
- 9:41High pop foul backing out of play, the full count.
- 9:44Three balls, two strikes.
- 9:47Bush, Bavarian, there.
- 9:49Your host, along with dual-filtered parath and cigarettes.
- 9:55Three balls, two strikes.
- 9:57Now the wide.
- 9:58Here's a pitch to Willie Mays.
- 10:00Foul back again.
- 10:08It's been pretty tough to earn a living with that plate right at this moment, Harry.
- 10:11It's a little difficult to see, not quite dark.
- 10:13They didn't take batting practice and Gibson is firing.
- 10:16He is really throwing hard as right, Jack.
- 10:19Here's the wind up the three-two pitch.
- 10:22Strike him out on a curve.
- 10:26Mays gave up on the pitch.
- 10:28Thought it was inside.
- 10:30It broke sharply right over the middle for a small third strike.
- 10:35Here now is Willie McCovey.
- 10:38Too big to be a man and not quite big enough to be a horse.
- 10:42I bet Mays is thinking about stealing secondary to let balls snap across the plate.
- 10:51Willie McCovey hitting three-fifteen.
- 10:55Seven homers and 14 runs batted in.
- 10:59First pitch is low.
- 11:02One ball, no strikes.
- 11:05Redbirds are one to last three in a row.
- 11:09Big series for the Cardinals.
- 11:11We need a good series here.
- 11:13Here's the pitch on the left.
- 11:14Fastball outside.
- 11:16Two balls, no strikes.
- 11:18McCovey, born in Mobile, Alabama, his hobby is reading comic books and seeing motion pictures.
- 11:28And hitting.
- 11:31There's the pitch on the way.
- 11:33Ooh, what a cut he had on a low fastball.
- 11:37And it is two balls and a strike.
- 11:41National League rookie of the year in 1959.
- 11:45McCovey, 24 years old, 6'4".
- 11:49Here's the pitch on the way.
- 11:51Swings and he misses the strike.
- 11:53Too he had a cut.
- 11:55And that evens it up with two balls, two strikes.
- 11:58Bob Gibson shooting for his seventh victory of the year.
- 12:04Now to wind up the 2-2 delivery to McCovey.
- 12:08Ooh, barely missed outside and Gibson is furious about that one.
- 12:13Three balls, two strikes.
- 12:15He was really mourning about the second pitch to McCovey.
- 12:17The umpire didn't give it to him.
- 12:19He threw the 2-2 pitch in the very same spot and Friar still wouldn't give it to him.
- 12:24Now it's a 3-2 pitch again.
- 12:27Here it is on the way.
- 12:29Lined in the center of basehead.
- 12:31And now Gibson is really even more angry as he, as that ball sailed past his head in the center,
- 12:38he was already marching at Paul Friar.
- 12:41As if to say, well, if you give him how many strikes, sure he's going to get ahead sooner or later.
- 12:49Now here is Orlando Cepeda.
- 12:53Right hand batter.
- 12:56Last time Gibson faced the Giants, he beat them one to nothing in a thriller.
- 13:07Now the stretch and the hesitation.
- 13:09Here's the pitch.
- 13:11He foul-tipped strike one.
- 13:13Carl Stowanski behind the plate tonight.
- 13:16Cardinal fans are here from New Albany, Mississippi.
- 13:24Good friend Leslie Brooks runs the station and carries our games out in Jackson, Tennessee.
- 13:34On hand.
- 13:35Here's the pitch and it's a curve outside.
- 13:37One ball, one strike.
- 13:41The pride of Little Rock next to Stowanski as Jack Pickens on hand.
- 13:47Our Bush-Bavarian distributor down that way.
- 13:51One ball, one strike.
- 13:54Here's the pitch on the way.
- 13:56Curve outside.
- 13:57Ball two.
- 13:58Two balls and a strike on Orlando Cepeda.
- 14:02Billy Faloo will be next.
- 14:04The Giants leading the league.
- 14:10Cepeda, 15 homers, 55 RBI.
- 14:15Now the stretch.
- 14:16Here's the pitch.
- 14:17There goes the runner.
- 14:18Ground ball is short.
- 14:19Go Ties only play first base.
- 14:21In time for the outs.
- 14:25McCovey's broke on the pitch.
- 14:27Cepeda grounded out.
- 14:29The Go Ties threw him out.
- 14:31One hit, no runs.
- 14:32No errors.
- 14:33We're going to the bottom half of the first inning.
- 14:36There's no score in the ballgame.
- 14:41You know, there are a few players in the league who can run the 110th lap.
- 14:45Some who can hit over 300.
- 14:48Some who have an exceptionally strong throwing arm.
- 14:52And then every once in a while, a player comes along who can do all three things.
- 14:56Run, hit, and throw.
- 14:58This is a rare individual.
- 15:01A ball player who stands head and shoulders above the rest.
- 15:05And here's something else that stands head and shoulders above the rest.
- 15:10Bush Bavarian beer.
- 15:12It has the crisp, lively, wide awake flavors that come through every time.
- 15:20So much so that we say Bush Bavarian drinks good.
- 15:25Unusually good.
- 15:27And here's why.
- 15:29It's a premium brew that tastes right.
- 15:32Not too heavy, not too light, just right.
- 15:38When you're drinking Bush Bavarian, man, you just know you're drinking one of the world's finest.
- 15:45So stock up soon.
- 15:47I'm going to agree Bush Bavarian drinks good.
- 16:03Group of youngsters in the Academy in Paragool, Arkansas, watching the ball game.
- 16:14Here is Kurt Flood to lead it off, Juan Marichal on the hill.
- 16:21He's already beaten the Cuydos twice this year.
- 16:25Once four to three.
- 16:29Stockily-filled right-hander into the windup he goes.
- 16:33And now the pitch on the way to Kurt Flood.
- 16:36Kurt ball outside. Tom Hollers behind the plate.
- 16:41The kid from Lockport, Illinois has moved into the number one catching job.
- 16:49Here's the pitch on the way.
- 16:51High ball two.
- 16:53Two balls and no strike.
- 16:55Flood hitting 3.26.
- 16:59Juan Marichal, who is 1.8.
- 17:03His catcher Tom Holler goes out to talk to him.
- 17:10Ray Sedecki will pitch tomorrow against Jack Sanford.
- 17:16Two balls, no strikes.
- 17:19Into the windup here's the pitch on the way.
- 17:23There's a good fastball over the heart of the plate.
- 17:29Two balls and a strike.
- 17:32Kurt Flood hitting 3.26.
- 17:37Now Marichal into the wind.
- 17:40Good delivery.
- 17:41High ball three.
- 17:43Three balls and a strike.
- 17:46Nobody on and nobody out.
- 17:55Here's Marichal delivering.
- 17:58Ball four, he walked him. That's the way to start.
- 18:03I don't know how the air steps up with a runner at first and nobody out.
- 18:07Ball game in the first inning.
- 18:09No score.
- 18:11Juan Marichal against Bob Gibson.
- 18:14Last time Gibson pitched he beat these fellows one to nothing.
- 18:19Another time he was beaten by the Giants.
- 18:23Where he's one and one against them.
- 18:32He could have given some loss.
- 18:34Billy O'Dell shut the Cardinals out.
- 18:36He didn't have a chance.
- 18:40He wound up six to nothing.
- 18:43There's the stretch ready to hound the air.
- 18:45There goes the runner.
- 18:46A bouncing ball.
- 18:48The second baseman is going to field it.
- 18:50There's the throw to first in time.
- 18:53Hiller had started over to cover second.
- 18:56Ornerly that might have been a base hit but with the hit run on.
- 19:00However, it started to run over that way and ran right into the path of the ball.
- 19:04Which wasn't hit very hard.
- 19:06We have a man in scoring position with one out.
- 19:09And here's Bill White hitting 269.
- 19:13Nine homers and 41 runs batted in.
- 19:21Man in scoring position, one away.
- 19:24There's the stretch.
- 19:26And the pitch by Marichal.
- 19:28Fastball low and outside, ball wide.
- 19:31Bill White has always had trouble hitting against his former teammates.
- 19:37One ball, no strikes.
- 19:41Man at second base, one gone.
- 19:44Bill White to hit her, Musi will be next.
- 19:46Marichal's pitch.
- 19:49Now, here it is.
- 19:51After a long delay, time is called and won't count.
- 19:57After Marichal took a lot of time on a delayed stretch, Bill White stepped out of the batter's box.
- 20:08One ball, no strikes.
- 20:11It's turned out to be a lovely evening in St. Louis.
- 20:14Oh, we had rain all day long.
- 20:16But it's cleared off.
- 20:18One ball, no strikes.
- 20:21Left hand batter Bill White.
- 20:23Kurt Kloet a long lead.
- 20:25The pitch on the way by Marichal.
- 20:27Here it is.
- 20:29Outside, ball two.
- 20:31Two balls, no strikes.
- 20:34Marichal with a record of 8-3.
- 20:37Bob Gibson is 6-4.
- 20:45One man out.
- 20:47Hagan holding flood close.
- 20:50There's the pitch.
- 20:51He swings in a slow curve and he misses.
- 20:54Two balls and a strike.
- 20:57Marichal behind with fastballs.
- 21:00Pulled the string with 2-0.
- 21:04Made a real good pitch.
- 21:06White swung at a miss.
- 21:09Two balls and a strike.
- 21:12Swung a long lead.
- 21:14Pitch to Bill White.
- 21:16Here it is.
- 21:17Oh, he made him look bad on that one.
- 21:21White swung at a very bad ball.
- 21:23That broke like a screwball, Jack.
- 21:26Something.
- 21:28He threw that one chain up and White didn't know what to look for.
- 21:31And lo and behold, here came another and White really chased it low and away.
- 21:36Two balls, two strikes.
- 21:39Now the pitch.
- 21:41Followed back on a fastball that time.
- 21:43White just barely got around to follow it off.
- 21:47That's the thing about him, Harry.
- 21:48He gets you out-facing him.
- 21:49He's fast enough to blow the ball right by us.
- 21:52Two balls, two strikes.
- 21:55Runner in scoring position.
- 21:57Two men are gone.
- 21:58Rather, one man is gone.
- 22:01Philadelphia, Cincinnati didn't score the first.
- 22:06Now Marichal is ready.
- 22:11From the belt.
- 22:13Here's the pitch.
- 22:17Swung late, fell back out of play.
- 22:20About 18,000 or so held down by the weather.
- 22:27White has never had a good series against the Giants, has he?
- 22:31One game he won with a grand slammer off Jack Sanford beat him 4-2.
- 22:36Other than that, Royce is batting average against his former teammates at the very low.
- 22:41Two balls, two strikes.
- 22:44Juan Marichal gets his sign.
- 22:48Glances at second base.
- 22:50A pitch from the belt.
- 22:53And here it is.
- 22:55Ball three high, a curveball.
- 22:57Three balls and two strikes.
- 23:01Runner at second, one out.
- 23:05Bill White, the hitter.
- 23:10Flora, that just will be edging off second.
- 23:12There he goes.
- 23:15Marichal is down to three and two.
- 23:17Mucy will be next.
- 23:19One man out.
- 23:22Now the signal given.
- 23:24There's the stretch ready.
- 23:26And the pitch on the way.
- 23:28Instead he backed off the rubber.
- 23:31Three balls, two strikes.
- 23:33Now he's set again.
- 23:35Here it is.
- 23:36A smack line drive right back to the pitcher.
- 23:39Throw in a second base gets away.
- 23:41And Fletter's safe.
- 23:44A great play by Marichal.
- 23:47Boy, what reflexes to catch that line drive.
- 23:50He left Pagan on the throw.
- 23:53Pagan couldn't hold them all if they had a, if they had it on the play.
- 23:59White lines off to Marichal.
- 24:02There's you still getting a fine hand.
- 24:21Missouri University football coach Dan Devine.
- 24:24Daughters watching the game here tonight.
- 24:29There's the stretch.
- 24:31There's a strike, a good fast ball.
- 24:34One strike and a little more.
- 24:36Mucy will try to drive this run home.
- 24:40Two men are gone now.
- 24:42Lloyd hit that ball hard but right back at Marichal.
- 24:49What a damn battle waiting.
- 24:54Now the glance at second base.
- 24:56Here's the pitch.
- 24:59On the infield.
- 25:01Pagan under the ball.
- 25:03He takes it to retire the sack.
- 25:05Mucy will clap to Pagan.
- 25:07So each team had one baserunner in their first inning and didn't score.
- 25:11It's no hits, no runs, no errors.
- 25:14One left.
- 25:15At the end of one, the Giants nothing, the Cardinals nothing.

- 26:31This Alu is having a great season hitting 343.
- 26:34Eight homers and 42 runs out of there.
- 26:37He also is from the Dominican Republic.
- 26:40There's a pitch in his striker's door.
- 26:43Khalid Balu.
- 26:46Now the pitch.
- 26:54It's right on by Sawaski to the screen.
- 26:59Two balls in the strike.
- 27:03Balu now 27 years old.
- 27:08There's a windup.
- 27:11The pitch on the way.
- 27:12He swings misses.

- 27:34Here's Jimmy Davenport hitting 331.
- 27:37Six homers and 26 runs out of there.
- 27:51Gibson winds and the pitch all the way.
- 27:54Foul tip, strike one.
- 27:56One strike, Kenobo.
- 27:58Gibson's not fooling around with any trick stuff.
- 28:00He's just raring back and firing.
- 28:06One strike, Kenobo.
- 28:07Here's the pitch.
- 28:09Low outside fastball evens it up.
- 28:13One man out, nobody on base.
- 28:15The ball game on the second inning, no score.
- 28:17Bob Gibson against Warren Marischal.
- 28:20Tomorrow afternoon, Ray Sadecki against Jack Sanford.
- 28:24One ball, one strike.
- 28:28Here's the pitch.
- 28:30There's a smash.
- 28:31Fair ball, might go for extra bases.
- 28:33There goes Davenport on his way to second.
- 28:36Mucey's throw away his save sliding.
- 28:43Davenport slashed a double down the third base line.
- 28:49Try to bring up Jose Pagan.
- 28:58Hitting 265, right-handed battle.
- 29:02Tom Howler, the catcher, would be next.
- 29:08One man out, ball game on the second inning.
- 29:13Bob Gibson gets ready.
- 29:15There's the pitch to Pagan.
- 29:18Gets away, here's Davenport trying to save the throw.
- 29:21He is!
- 29:22Hey, for Thursday.
- 29:24Go was off.
- 29:26Sawatski threw off balance.
- 29:30He could have as much on the throw as he would have liked to have had.
- 29:34And it was high and a little bit to the foul side of the bag.
- 29:38So it's a fast ball.
- 29:41As Davenport takes third.
- 29:43Now anything would score the run.
- 29:45The infield has to come in.
- 29:47One ball, no strikes.
- 29:51Bob Gibson needs a strike out here.
- 29:54There's the pitch on the way.
- 29:56It's low.
- 29:57Two balls, no strikes.
- 29:59Tom Howler will be next, hitting 247.
- 30:05We're in the second inning.
- 30:06The Giants threaten.
- 30:08Bob Gibson getting ready.
- 30:12Into the wind and here's the pitch to Pagan.
- 30:15High-pop foul.
- 30:16Here comes White over to the stands.
- 30:17He might have a play.
- 30:19He can't reach it.
- 30:24Two balls, no strikes.
- 30:32Bob Gibson with a reverent third and only one out.
- 30:38Giants have made two hits now.
- 30:43Gibson hasn't stepped on the rubbers yet.
- 30:49Looks down for his sign.
- 30:50Here's the windup.
- 30:51Here's the pitch to Pagan.
- 30:53Squeeze and wait a minute, foul ball.
- 30:56It hit his body and then rolled into fair territory.
- 30:59As Davenport came down the line, Pagan tried to squeeze him home and now we've got a count of two balls and two strikes.
- 31:14Maybe we can get that strike out here.
- 31:16The infield is in.
- 31:19They're like Marish, I'll leave them one run, you know, try to keep them giving them.
- 31:24Two balls, two strikes.
- 31:26Gibson winds.
- 31:28Here's the pitch on the way.
- 31:30A looping fly ball.
- 31:32Javier, check.
- 31:33Hey, great shot.
- 31:34And Davenport doesn't try to score.
- 31:37Oh, what a play.
- 31:39Spun some to the crowd.
- 31:42He outran that ball, Harry.
- 31:43Simply outran that ball.
- 31:46Boy, there's just another indication of the tremendous importance of speed.
- 31:52With the infield in, that ball looked like nobody could reach it, but Javier outran it, caught it over his shoulder with his back to the infield.
- 31:59Davenport had he tagged up, might have had a chance to score, but he had come up the line thinking the ball was going to be in there for a base hit.
- 32:08So there's two out and here's Tom Haller.
- 32:15Left-handed batter.
- 32:17Gibson gets that into the windup and here's the pitch.
- 32:22A bouncing ball, we're out of the inning.
- 32:24Javier's got it over to first-in time, nice pitch.
- 32:29And a fine play by Julian Javier.
- 32:33And so it's one hit.
- 32:35No runs, no errors on one left.
- 32:37We go into the bottom half of the second inning.
- 32:40Giants nothing, the Cardinals nothing.
- 32:43And before we get back to the ballgame, how about lighting up a dual-filter Taroton as Taroton for flavor.
- 32:53Flavor you never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 32:57Hungry for flavor.
- 33:01Jerry's got it flavored.
- 33:04You never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 33:11Quality tobacco and a dual-filter too.
- 33:14Bring the best flavor through to you.
- 33:18Flavor you never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 33:26Dual-filter, dual-filter Taroton.
- 33:32That's the score, friends.
- 33:35Filter smoking never tasted so good.
- 33:39Better check up on your supply of dual-filter Tarotons right now.
- 33:44And get another carton before you run out.
- 33:51We'll pause for identification as the Cardinals face-forum network.
- 33:55This is KMWixie. I'm in FM St. Louis.
- 33:58This is Kenny Boyer inviting you to see the Frontier Coupe, a full-size Pontiac hardtop available only at Vincel Pontiac, 3295 South Kings Highway at Tyler.
- 34:07This is Harry Carrey with Jack Buck. We're going to the bottom half of the second inning, no score.
- 34:19Kenny Boyer up there.
- 34:25There's the pitch. Cardball in there, a strike off.
- 34:30That is young Sir John Kilman. Get another home run for the Red Sox.
- 34:38A Georgia Tech Boy.
- 34:44Boyer hits a bouncing ball down to the second base from Hiller. There's Lefebvre in back.
- 34:49Boyer rolls out from Hiller to Sepeta.
- 34:57Kyle Sawatsky in the 3.50 draw.
- 35:05Baltimore, New York, no score in the bottom of the seventh.
- 35:10Yankees have used two pitchers.
- 35:15Ford must have come up with a bad armor back.
- 35:22Here's Sawatsky. One away. Juan Marishaw gets set.
- 35:30End of the lineup, here's the pitch.
- 35:33Cardball outside.
- 35:36In some ways, this Marishaw reminds you of Callers, former pitching star of the Dodgers.
- 35:46What reminds me of Erskine is the way he comes directly overhand with his delivery. Here it is. A bouncing ball to Sepeta.
- 35:52Big hop, he's got it, easy out. Two men up and two men down.
- 35:56Here's Gotay, and boy this looks like one of those ball games where a run might be a mountain.
- 36:09Gotay hitting 3.18. No homers in 18 RBI.
- 36:22Marishaw getting set.
- 36:27End of the windup, here's the pitch.
- 36:30Cardball on outside.
- 36:32Gotay's from Puerto Rico. Marishaw from the Dominican Republic.
- 36:36Sepeta from Puerto Rico. Pagan from Puerto Rico.
- 36:47Davenport from Mississippi Southern College.
- 36:50Lane drive, they hit for Gotay, he's on there.
- 36:53Gotay rip one in the left field.
- 36:56Here's Doug Clemens now, playing right field, hitting 2.31.
- 37:01That Gotay continues to pound that ball.
- 37:14McCovey's in right, Mays in center, Alou in left.
- 37:19Clemens cutting up with two out. Cardinal just got that first hit, a single left by Gotay.
- 37:30Doug Clemens digs in.
- 37:33Ron Marishaw is ready.
- 37:37Takes a look over his shoulder.
- 37:40Now they toss over to first base the runner back.
- 37:44Now you don't suppose Gotay can beat out Maury Wills for the All-Star team, but he's got to be second in line right now.
- 37:51He's sure got to be a big candidate for that rookie of the year though.
- 37:55Now the stretch. Here's the pitch to Clemens.
- 37:58Pitch out, not going anywhere.
- 38:16One ball, no strikes.
- 38:20Gotay leads.
- 38:22And now Marishaw steps back off the rubber.
- 38:27One ball, no strikes.
- 38:31Doug Clemens waving that bat around.
- 38:34Marishaw's pitch.
- 38:36Outside ball two, Bob Gibson would be next.
- 38:39And he's a good hitting pitcher.
- 38:53Here's the pitch.
- 38:54Followed it back, he had a good cut on the fastball.
- 38:58And that makes it two balls and a strike.
- 39:00Two men are out.
- 39:02Doug Clemens at the plate.
- 39:06Hitting 231.
- 39:0922-year-old rookie outfielder.
- 39:12Yankees are batting in the bottom of the seventh.
- 39:14Nothing, nothing with Baltimore.
- 39:18Two balls and a strike.
- 39:21Now Marishaw steps back off the rubber.
- 39:25Two balls and a strike.
- 39:29Don't buy a lead.
- 39:31Handle pitch.
- 39:34There's a high fly ball to center.
- 39:36That will be an easy eye.
- 39:38Willie Mays can't find it.
- 39:40It's passed for Hec.
- 39:41Hec Clemens around the first, a run score.
- 39:44And he is in there for the tip hole.
- 39:47Willie Mays lost the ball in the light.
- 39:50He's not located at all.
- 39:53Standing there, and he suddenly looks over towards Philippe Ballot.
- 39:57As if to say, where is it Philippe?
- 40:00By the time Philippe could yell to him, the ball had dropped.
- 40:04A high routine fly ball goes for a triple.
- 40:08Get a good look at that because, boy, you don't see that happen often.
- 40:13I want to tell you something that Goatie was not loafing on the routine fly ball to center field.
- 40:18He was really pumping. He couldn't understand why they kept waving them home, but he scored.
- 40:24So Julio scored the run.
- 40:26A triple for Clemens.
- 40:27And here's Bob Gibson out of the pit.
- 40:30Low outside, ball one.
- 40:32And Clemens wasn't loafing a bit either.
- 40:34He went into third base standing up.
- 40:36I think a guy thought Keane lost his mind when he sent him off and told him to keep running.
- 40:41There's the pitch on the way.
- 40:43Curve high and outside, ball two.
- 40:46Perhaps the greatest center fielder of all time, Willie Mays, just proved he was human.
- 40:53A routine fly ball and he couldn't locate it.
- 40:57He lost it in the gloaming, as it were.
- 41:01There's the pitch.
- 41:03Swings and fouls it off the end of the bat and into the giant dugout.
- 41:07And they scatter like tempens in the bowling alley.
- 41:17Two balls and a strike.
- 41:20Two men are on.
- 41:22Right hand batter.
- 41:27Here's Maher Charles Petsch.
- 41:29Try to body miss.
- 41:31Strike two.
- 41:32Two balls, two strikes.
- 41:35The Red Sox, failing Clemens six to nothing.
- 41:38Just came up with five in the fourth.
- 41:41And now they trail by only one.
- 41:45Two balls, two strikes.
- 41:47Bob Gibson, Nevada.
- 41:51Hitting two eleven for the season.
- 41:54A good hitter for a pitcher.
- 41:57Started out in baseball as a switch hitting catcher.
- 42:02Two balls, two strikes.
- 42:04There's the pitch on the left.
- 42:06Ooh, he had a good cut and he fouled it back.
- 42:11Two balls, two strikes.
- 42:17Willie Mays couldn't find.
- 42:20Doug Clemens routine fly ball.
- 42:24Lost it either in the lights or in the twilight.
- 42:28And it went for a triple.
- 42:30Two balls, two strikes.
- 42:32There's the pitch on the left.
- 42:34He struck him out of the curve.
- 42:37However, the Cardinals pick up a run.
- 42:40Two hits, no errors, one left.
- 42:42At the end of two, the Cardinals won and the Giants nothing.
- 42:50Hey, are you hungry for flavor in a cigarette?
- 42:53Well, Taroton's got it.
- 42:56Flavor you never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 43:00Just one pack of dual-filtered Tarotons will prove to you
- 43:05filter smoking never tasted so good.
- 43:09Go ahead now and see for yourself.
- 43:12Pick up a pack of Tarotons.

- 44:05Mary Schaul will eat off.
- 44:07Willie Mays, when he came in from center field, chatted with Mary Schaul,
- 44:11probably telling how badly he felt about that.
- 44:14He never did see that ball until it hit the ground.
- 44:16Oftentimes, the now-fielder would have trouble picking the ball up off the bat,
- 44:19but get a line on it when it starts to fall, but he never did see it
- 44:23until it hit the ground and the Cardinals have a run.
- 44:26Well, here is Warren Mary Schaul.
- 44:32The leadoff here in the top of the third, the Cardinals lead 1-0.
- 44:36There's a strike called.
- 44:50One ball, one strike, the pitch is a little bit outside.
- 44:55Two balls and a strike.
- 45:00Ball game in the third, the Cardinals lead 1-0.
- 45:03Here's the pitch.
- 45:04Mary Schaul hits a high pop ball.
- 45:06Clemens chasing it, so is White.
- 45:09The ball drops out of play into the stand.
- 45:13Two balls, two strikes and a pitcher.
- 45:16Here's Mary Schaul.
- 45:21And the Dominican Republic.
- 45:30Mary Schaul is 24 years old.
- 45:37Here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 45:38He fouled it back into the upper deck.
- 45:41Hey, souvenirs now.
- 45:45One strike.
- 45:52The leadoff man Chuck Hiller will be next.
- 45:55Now the line and here's the pitch.
- 45:58He struck him out on a curve ball.
- 46:00Mary Schaul fall out on strike.
- 46:03One gone.
- 46:05Mary Schaul last year won 13.
- 46:07He's already won 8 this season.
- 46:10The Giants have played 57 ball games and they've won 40 of them.
- 46:16That's a 7-0-2 pace.
- 46:20If they can continue at that rate, nobody will catch them.
- 46:25Everybody expects them to slough off a little bit.
- 46:33One man out, nobody on base.
- 46:35The ball game in the third.
- 46:39Chuck Hiller takes a slider low.
- 46:43One ball, no strikes.
- 46:44Ray Sadecki pitches tomorrow for the Cardinals.
- 46:48Larry Jackson and Ray Washburn Sunday.
- 46:51Here's a strike call over the outside corner.
- 46:53That evens it up.
- 46:55One ball, one strike.
- 46:58One man out.
- 47:00Chuck Hiller up there.
- 47:02Ball game in the third.
- 47:04Here's the time call.
- 47:06Ray Schaul saying he's got you on that maze and probably why he didn't get any help from his teammates until he threw his hands up at the last moment.
- 47:19Here's a pitch.
- 47:20Hi.
- 47:21You know, Willie has a very, very nonchalant way of catching the ball.
- 47:25He'll quite often just stand there with his hands on his sides and suddenly cup the hands at the belt buckle for a basket catch.
- 47:32And that's what I thought he was doing out there on Clemens ball.
- 47:35Here's a pitch drilled up the middle.
- 47:37He's hit for Hiller.
- 47:40Chuck Hiller lined to single center.
- 47:58Here now is Willie Mays with a runner at first and one out.
- 48:03He was out on strikes his first time.
- 48:08There's a leadoff first base by Hiller, the pitch.
- 48:11He swings and misses straight away.
- 48:16Mays hitting an even 300.
- 48:19Nineteen homers, 49 RBI.
- 48:25Now the pitch, low outside.
- 48:27That evens it.
- 48:28One ball, one strike.
- 48:31One gone.
- 48:33Mays straddles the plate.
- 48:41Bob Gibson gets set.
- 48:45And the pitch, high outside ball two.
- 48:48Two balls and a strike.
- 48:50At the end of seven at Yankee Stadium, there's no score between Baltimore and the Yanks.
- 48:59Mays the batter, one out and one on.
- 49:05Pittsburgh and Milwaukee rained out.
- 49:08There's a pitch.
- 49:10Outside curve, ball three.
- 49:13Three balls, one strike.
- 49:15Right hand batter digging in.
- 49:19Bob Gibson with a one run lead.
- 49:23End of the stretch.
- 49:25Three one pitch.
- 49:27Two it is. And there it goes.
- 49:29Way back. It might be out of here.
- 49:31It could be. It is.
- 49:33A home run in the right center.
- 49:35There's plenty of home runs here.
- 49:38So Willie gave us one run and then just got two back.
- 49:51Mays hit a three one pitch into the right center field for Billion.
- 49:56And the Giants, just like that, lead two to us.
- 50:07And you almost knew that was going to happen.
- 50:11There's the touch now.
- 50:13And McCovey takes it inside.
- 50:21Willie Mays, who had given us a run by being unable to locate a routine fly,
- 50:27just drove in two with a homer.
- 50:29There's a pitch swung on by McCovey and this.
- 50:33Man, these guys really get some cuts.
- 50:38One ball, one strike.
- 50:42Now the delivery.
- 50:44There she goes, way back.
- 50:46Forget about it.
- 50:48Home run.
- 50:50Even Holt's a bad and hitter on the roof.
- 50:53A line drive.
- 50:55And the Giants lead three to us.
- 51:00And that's McCovey's eighth.
- 51:04And here's the payback.
- 51:12Boy.
- 51:16They've got some power, believe you me.
- 51:23The way these guys swing, this ball game looks like David and Goliath.
- 51:32Here's the payback now.
- 51:34Here's the pitch.
- 51:36Oh, what a cut that he missed.
- 51:39One strike and double.
- 51:42One man out, three runs in.
- 51:45The Giants leading.
- 51:50So pay them.
- 51:52There's that 15 homers himself.
- 51:55Driven in 55 runs.
- 51:57Now the pitch.
- 51:59High inside and the count evens to the bottom of the stride.
- 52:03That ball went all the way back to the spring.
- 52:11Hayes has driven in 51 runs.
- 52:16So pay them.
- 52:17Driven in 55.
- 52:19Now Lewis driven in 42.
- 52:21There's the pitch inside.
- 52:25They've got three men on their lineup who have driven in 148 runs between them.
- 52:35Now the pitch.
- 52:36Swung and he missed a high fast ball.
- 52:39The entire Cardinal squad, counting everybody, has driven in 244.
- 52:50There are three men alone, 148.
- 52:56That will give you an idea.
- 52:58Two two-picks outside curve, all three.
- 53:06Hang about them, even if they don't get good pitching, they can beat you just with power.
- 53:11Now the windup, three two-pitch.
- 53:13Here it is.
- 53:14Fall back.
- 53:19Rebounds to the field.
- 53:21A full count of three and two.
- 53:26Ball game in the third.
- 53:29Orlando's to pay the weights.
- 53:33Bob Gibson gets set.
- 53:35Here's the pitch won.
- 53:37Popped up on a change of pace.
- 53:39Gotai is out in short left.
- 53:41Makes the cut.
- 53:45He pulls the pay down on a change of pace curve ball.
- 53:51And now here's Philippe Halleux.
- 54:00On the Western Union ticker, they have Motai hitting home onto the Giants in the third with one arm.
- 54:08Here's Alou, a big bouncing ball.
- 54:10Boy, you're trying to cut it off.
- 54:12It'll go for a scratch hit.
- 54:20It's a hit, a high hopper towards short.
- 54:23Kenny Boyer tried to cut it off, but couldn't reach it.
- 54:27On Western Union, they have Motai hitting home onto the Giants.
- 54:34Whoever's sending that report mustn't like me.
- 54:37It's a kind of deprive them of a home run.
- 54:44There's a long lead by Alou.
- 54:46Here's the pitch.
- 54:47Davenport takes a curved strike call.
- 54:50One strike to no ball.
- 54:51Tigers won the first game of a double header from Washington, 7-6.
- 54:56Washington used seven pitchers.
- 54:58The Tigers used five in the first game.
- 55:02Here's Alou, a lead.
- 55:03There he goes.
- 55:04There's a pitch fouled into the upper deck.
- 55:06Bounces back downstairs.
- 55:09Adds two strikes to no ball.
- 55:11The Giants on Willie Mays, 20th home run of the year.
- 55:19Followed by McCovey's eighth.
- 55:21Now lead 3-1.
- 55:25Two strikes, no ball.
- 55:28Here's Bob Gibson's pitch on the way.
- 55:30There goes the runner.
- 55:31Here's the pad.
- 55:32He is home from the stand.
- 55:36Alou has got down on the last pitch.
- 55:39Perfect pad.
- 55:40Out of here.
- 55:41Now it is three runs, four hits.
- 55:46Nowhere is nobody left.
- 55:48We go into the bottom of the third.
- 55:50The Giants three, the Cardinals one.
- 55:53Go ahead, plan that vacation.

- 1:02:36One Marischal getting ready.
- 1:02:39Here's the strike.
- 1:02:41Out of pitch.
- 1:02:43Go outside, ball one Sawatski would be next.

- 1:04:33And it is one run, two hits.
- 1:04:36No errors, one left.
- 1:04:38At the end of three, now, it's the Giants three, the Cardinals two.
- 1:04:43From Bavaria, the inspiration for a great beer.
- 1:04:48From Bavaria, the two words that promise you pleasure.
- 1:04:52The pleasure of Bush Bavarian beer.
- 1:04:55Drinks good.
- 1:04:58Drinks good.
- 1:05:01Drinks good.
- 1:05:08Drinks good.
- 1:05:11Drinks good.
- 1:05:17The Bavarian way of saying you get more taste, more heartiness, more satisfaction.
- 1:05:26Drinks good.
- 1:05:28Bush Bavarian drinks good.
- 1:05:32Enjoy it soon.
- 1:05:35Bush Bavarian.
- 1:05:38Drinks good.
- 1:05:47While we go into the time for the four at the Cardinals, trail three to two.
- 1:05:51Jimmy Davenport leading off.
- 1:05:53And at your service, Smiling Jack.
- 1:05:57Davenport double his first time.
- 1:05:58Right-handed batter.
- 1:05:59Gibson throws a pitch high for a ball.
- 1:06:02Bob Gibson on the mound.
- 1:06:04The Giants have tapped him for six hits.
- 1:06:06The Redbirds have four.
- 1:06:08The Cardinals trail three to two as the fourth inning gets underway.
- 1:06:11Davenport is hitting 3.31.
- 1:06:15Takes a strike call.
- 1:06:16The slider at the knees.
- 1:06:17It's one and one.
- 1:06:18Davenport is amongst the leaders.
- 1:06:20He ranks fifth in the league with a batting average of 3.31.
- 1:06:24He's had six home runs.
- 1:06:27Takes a pitch high.
- 1:06:28Two balls and a strike.
- 1:06:29It'll be Davenport, Figan, and Holler.
- 1:06:35Nobody on or out here in the fourth inning.
- 1:06:40And Gibson's next one.
- 1:06:42Foul back on the screen.
- 1:06:43Two and two.
- 1:06:44This Davenport is a big part of this Giants ball club.
- 1:06:48They have the power, of course, of Mays, McCubbies, Cepeda, and Alou.
- 1:06:53But this Davenport is a very, very fine third baseman.
- 1:06:57Adds a lot of fire to that infield.
- 1:06:59And he's a good hitter.
- 1:07:00Foul back.
- 1:07:01Got a terrific cut. Two and two.
- 1:07:06These Giants sure get their swings up there at the plate.
- 1:07:10They really chop down on that ball.
- 1:07:13Gibson with a 2-2 count on Davenport.
- 1:07:16Fire.
- 1:07:17Stuck him out.
- 1:07:18He went around, tried to hold up on a curve ball, but he got him on strike.
- 1:07:22And so Gibson has struck out one in each inning so far.
- 1:07:30This is fourth of the ballgame.
- 1:07:33Bob trying to become the first seven-game winner on the Cardinals' staff.
- 1:07:37Kurt Simmons has missed a couple of times as he tried.
- 1:07:45One man out now, and Pagan steps out as Gibson started to work.
- 1:07:49Bob works in quite a hurry, as you know, if you've seen him.
- 1:07:54He gets that ball back.
- 1:07:56He's ready to fire right now.
- 1:07:59Pagan popped out his first time.
- 1:08:01One of the key plays in this ballgame.
- 1:08:03Javier made a good play on the ball.
- 1:08:06It's Lowe, the first one for ball one.
- 1:08:10Last time Pagan was up there, Davenport was on third base with one man out.
- 1:08:14Pagan was the key man, the infield in, and he popped one in the short right.
- 1:08:17Looked like it was going to drop for a hit and drive in the run.
- 1:08:20Javier caught up to the ball and made a fine play for the putout.
- 1:08:23That run never did score.
- 1:08:24There's a foul out of play down in the right field corner, and the count to Jose is one and one.
- 1:08:28Pagan hitting 265.
- 1:08:31That's about all the Giants need from him with the back.
- 1:08:36Does a good job with the glove at shortstop.
- 1:08:38Has good range, fine arm.
- 1:08:42And he can pivot on the double play.
- 1:08:45Here's the one-one, and it's downstairs and a bit outside, two and one.
- 1:08:50One out, nobody on, fourth inning, Giants three, Cardinals two.
- 1:08:54Got a lot of action in the ball game so far.
- 1:08:58Bad weather in St. Louis during the day, undoubtedly held the crowd down.
- 1:09:01Still we have some 15 or 16,000 here.
- 1:09:05Pagan hits a foul rolling back.
- 1:09:07That evens it up a two and two.
- 1:09:11Tom Haller, the catcher, will be next.
- 1:09:14In the third with one out, Hiller, Chuck Hiller, single, and Mays,
- 1:09:19and McCabe, Homer, for the 20th time this year.
- 1:09:24And McCabe, Homer, to make it three to one.
- 1:09:26The Cardinals were ahead at the time.
- 1:09:28Now it's three to two.
- 1:09:30Gibson working too rapidly to shoot Pagan.
- 1:09:32He steps out again.
- 1:09:34Cardinals got a run in the second inning.
- 1:09:36Single by Gotay and a triple by Clemens, and a ball that Mays lost.
- 1:09:40Pagan strikes out, curve ball, got him.
- 1:09:43Got him looking.
- 1:09:44Pagan is called out on strike.
- 1:09:46Boy, there was a sharp breaking pitch.
- 1:09:48And Pagan took it.
- 1:09:50That's the fifth strikeout for Gibson.
- 1:09:54And after the Giants made it three to one, the Cardinals saw Bill White,
- 1:09:58Homer, for the 10th time this year, to make it a three-two ball game.
- 1:10:02That's the way it stands now.
- 1:10:03Two off, nobody on here in the fourth.
- 1:10:05And Tom Haller, the catcher, left-handed batter is up there.
- 1:10:08And he takes it low.
- 1:10:11Haller was thrown out by the second baseman, Javier, his first time.
- 1:10:15It was Boyer, Gotay, Javier, and White on the Cardinal infield.
- 1:10:19Newseal, Pludd, and Clemens in the outfield.
- 1:10:21Sawotsky back at the plate, gives the sign.
- 1:10:25These Giants have been stepping out on Gibson quite often.
- 1:10:31Here's the pitch, way over his head and back to the screen.
- 1:10:34The ball missed everything.
- 1:10:36It missed Sawotsky's glove, Haller's head, and the umpire's mask.
- 1:10:41And it's ball, too.
- 1:10:44The Giants have been trying to irritate Gibson by stepping out,
- 1:10:46not letting him work as rapidly as he wishes.
- 1:10:49Haller takes a strike, but the batter's two-and-one.
- 1:10:58Bush-Bavarian dual-filter Tarot in bringing in the ball game tonight.
- 1:11:06Bases are empty, two men gone, fourth inning.
- 1:11:11Here's the pitch from Gibson.
- 1:11:13He's going on bouncing ball, Javier, big hop, up, throws, gets him, that's it.
- 1:11:18Javier throws out Haller, and it's a one-two-three inning.
- 1:11:21And you like to see Gibson settle down like that after the slugging of the last inning,
- 1:11:25because if you get into a power contest with these guys, the odds are against you.
- 1:11:30At the end of three-and-a-half innings of play, the Giants three Cardinals, too.
- 1:11:34In a beer, you're looking for taste, heartiness, satisfaction.
- 1:11:41Make your beer Bush-Bavarian and enjoy more taste, more heartiness, more satisfaction.
- 1:11:57Bush-Bavarian, a pleasure to drink.
- 1:12:00Bush-Bavarian, drinks good.
- 1:12:02Bush-Bavarian, drinks good.
- 1:12:11Love Bavarian, we are saying you get more taste, more heartiness, more satisfaction.
- 1:12:25Bavarian, drinks good.
- 1:12:41The bottom of the fourth comes around.
- 1:12:43The Cardinals lead it one time, one to nothing.
- 1:12:46The Giants took the lead, three to one.
- 1:12:48The Redbirds made it three to two.
- 1:12:49And now, as they hit in the bottom of the fourth inning, that's the way it stands.
- 1:12:55The Cardinals trail by a run.
- 1:12:57Carl Sawantzki will lead off.
- 1:12:59Meyershaw taking the warm-up tosses.

- 1:14:163 to 2 the score, and here's Gotay, who's single his first time.
- 1:14:20Willie O's single in the second with 2 out and came around to score.
- 1:14:24He was batting 3-18 at the start of the night. Had three hits here last night.
- 1:14:31Mara Shawl is the pitcher, and there's a line drive foul down into the left field corner.
- 1:14:35Gotay made a bid for a double at one foul.
- 1:14:40Mara Shawl has a very exaggerated windup.
- 1:14:45Takes a slow windup and he kicks that front foot, the left foot way up high.
- 1:14:50Rears back with that throwing arm and comes at you directly overhand.
- 1:14:54Real good fastball curve, change of pace. A tough pitcher.
- 1:15:00The pitcher's downstairs for a ball. It's 1-1. Gotay started to go, held up.
- 1:15:07Julio Gotay, G-O-T-A-Y. Gotay wears number 19, the Cardinals shortstop.
- 1:15:15Doug Clemens will be next. The Cardinals need a run. We're in the fourth inning.
- 1:15:21Here's the 1-1 pitch in the dirt.

- 1:15:32Taylor hit a home run, Tony Taylor.
- 1:15:36Pittsburgh and Milwaukee rained out tonight.
- 1:15:40Cubs and Mets split a doubleheader this afternoon.
- 1:15:44Gotay hits a bouncing foul on the third base line. It's 2-2.
- 1:15:48In the first game of the doubleheader at Chicago,
- 1:15:52the Mets snapped a 17-game losing streak by scoring a run in the ninth, an unearned run,
- 1:15:58and whipped the Cubs 4 to 3. The Cubs came back and took the second game 3 to 2. They split.
- 1:16:04The Cardinals lost two strikes to count. Gotay crouched at the plate.
- 1:16:08Here's the pitch. Strike three call.
- 1:16:11A slider stayed on the outside corner. Gotay was looking for the curve.
- 1:16:15Marshall's slider got him on strike.
- 1:16:18And poor Marshall ends his second strikeout.
- 1:16:22He's retired the first two men.
- 1:16:25Only once in the ballgame, and we're in the fourth inning, did the Cardinals get the leadoff man out.
- 1:16:31Cepeda, the first baseman, is into the mound talking to Marshall.
- 1:16:35Marshall, Justin Youngster.
- 1:16:47Last year was his first year with the Giants, and Cepeda sort of took him under his wing.
- 1:16:51Here's the pitch to Doug Clement. Pop ball out of play, back off to the left.
- 1:16:57This started only in 1958. He was born in 37.
- 1:17:05Twenty-four years old. He's from the Dominican.
- 1:17:10He was married this past spring.
- 1:17:151-13, lost 10 for the Giants last year. He's 8-3 now. The pitch is high to Clement's.
- 1:17:21Inside is 1-1. Clement's still looking for his first big league homer.
- 1:17:28No homeruns, eight runs batted in, and a 2-31 batting average.
- 1:17:33Two out, nobody on. The outfield plays Clement's to pull.
- 1:17:36He got a triple in the third when Mays lost his fly ball.
- 1:17:41Outside, 2-1.
- 1:17:45Clement's hitting in the number eight spot. Gibson will bat next.
- 1:17:49The Giants three, Cardinals two.
- 1:17:54Cleveland led Boston in one time, six to nothing. Now Boston leads Cleveland eight to six after five.
- 1:18:03Two balls in the strike. The pitch to Clement's on the way.
- 1:18:06Swung on a shot to very, very deep center field.
- 1:18:08Mays going back on the track in front of the wall of Mexico.
- 1:18:12Clement hit one about 400 feet in the straightaway center field.
- 1:18:16Willie Mays never did turn his back to the infield.
- 1:18:19He backpedaled all the way, and while on the gravel in front of the wall,
- 1:18:22not too far from the 4-22 mark, he all-in that blast off the bat of Clement's,
- 1:18:28and the Cardinals go down an order in the fourth.
- 1:18:30At the end of four, it's the Giants three, the Cardinals two.

- 1:19:45Right-handed batter whom he fanned back in the third inning.
- 1:19:48Gibson has five strikeouts in four frames. Swing and a miss by Marischal.
- 1:19:53This fellow's pretty good hitter has eight hits for the season, batting 258.
- 1:19:56He's driven in five runs for the Giants.
- 1:20:00I'll feel playing around to the right for him, and he swings and misses again.
- 1:20:03That's two of them.
- 1:20:05Here's the final on the Yankee game. They blanked Baltimore 1-0.
- 1:20:09He's got the win in relief for Whitey Ford and Wilhelm the loser.
- 1:20:14The pitch to Marischal. Ground ball to second base.
- 1:20:17Aviere, short hop. Almost booted that one. Throws the first and gets it.
- 1:20:21That ball came to Aviere in between hops. Came up to him a little bit, but he fielded it and threw Marischal out.
- 1:20:30Around the way off, man, Chuck Hiller.
- 1:20:33Hiller lined out to center field to start the ballgame.
- 1:20:36Singled in the third and trotted around the bases when Willie Mays, who was in the on-deck circle at the moment,
- 1:20:42hit his 20th home run of the year into the right center field pavilion.
- 1:20:46Hiller takes a strike. He's up there choked up on the bat, little left-handed batter.
- 1:20:50Hitting 281. No homers, 20 RBIs.
- 1:20:58This fellow has solved the second base problem for the Giants.
- 1:21:03Here's the pitch to him. Low inside, bounces away from Sawatsky. It's one and one.
- 1:21:10The Giants tried all sorts of people at second base.
- 1:21:13They thought they had the problem solved with glass and game. Weren't satisfied there.
- 1:21:19Tell me they have a Bowman point for a while. Now Hiller has it.
- 1:21:22There's a pop-up. That should be the second out.
- 1:21:25Sawatsky having trouble. Gibson is there trying to help him out and Carl makes the catch.
- 1:21:30Carl was staggering around like you didn't know where the ball was.
- 1:21:34Gibson was ready to make the catch himself. Finally Carl picked it up and made the catch, too.
- 1:21:41It was foul as he grabbed it. Hiller fouls out to Sawatsky and here is, say, hey, Willie Mays.
- 1:21:48Willie struck out and homered.
- 1:21:52His homer with the man on in the third was his 20th of the year. The outfield very deep, straight away.
- 1:21:57Look out. Pitch is high. Ball one. He was ducking out. He thought that Gibson was going to throw at him.
- 1:22:02Gibson started off with a curve and Willie ducked out of there. The pitch was over but high.
- 1:22:09We're in the fifth. Giants lead three to two. Foul off the end of the bat into the Giants dugout.
- 1:22:15They come off the bench.
- 1:22:21One and one to Willie. As Harry said earlier, after Willie lost that fly ball that cost the Giants a run,
- 1:22:27you almost knew that he was going to hurt Bob Gibson and he did with a two-run homer his last time up there.
- 1:22:33Now the count is one and one and Mays takes it outside. Two and one.
- 1:22:38Chicago and Minnesota scoreless after four. Yankees beat Baltimore one to nothing.
- 1:22:43Later Kansas City at Los Angeles. Red Sox lead Cleveland eight to six in the sixth.
- 1:22:50First game of the doubleheader, Detroit seven, Washington six. Pitch is low to Mays.
- 1:22:55Mays is really moving around that batter's box.
- 1:23:00The count has run to three and one and McCovey will be next.
- 1:23:10Marshall grounded out. Miller fouled out. Three-one pitch. Pop foul. Back out of play.
- 1:23:15No one can get it. This is three and two to Willie. Ball into the upper deck.
- 1:23:20Bounces back down on the playing field.
- 1:23:33The Giants leading the Dodgers by a half game. Leading the Cardinals by ten games.
- 1:23:40The Cardinals are two behind Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh and Milwaukee will be item tonight.
- 1:23:45The Cardinals are three and a half ahead of Milwaukee. Redbirds only two and a half behind third place Cincinnati.
- 1:23:52Here's the three-two pitch to Willie Mays and a foul back out of play.
- 1:23:57He's giving ground but getting lumber on them, ball. Keeping that bat out there.
- 1:24:07The Cardinals and the Giants have played six times and the Giants have won four of them.
- 1:24:12Curve ball. Foul tipped strikeout.
- 1:24:17A curve ball and then he started his swing. Really didn't take the full swing but the ball hit his bat foul.
- 1:24:24Sawatsky held onto it for the strikeout. That's the sixth strikeout for Gibson.
- 1:24:30That's the second time in the ball game he has set the Giants down in order. He's retired six in a row.
- 1:24:36Cardinals come to bat in the home half of the fifth and the Giants still lead three to two.
- 1:24:41Well this is the time for picnics and barbecues. Tell me something friend.
- 1:24:47After you've enjoyed the good food and have sat back for a smoke, does that cigarette of yours really come through with taste?
- 1:24:55Or does it leave you hungry for flavor? With dual filter Taroton there's never a doubt.
- 1:25:01Taroton's got it. Flavor you never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 1:25:07Hungry for flavor.
- 1:25:11Taroton's got it. Flavor you never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 1:25:21While a teat of alcohol's in the dual filter too. Bring the best flavor through to you.
- 1:25:28Flavor you never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 1:25:36Dual filter, dual filter Taroton.
- 1:25:42Dual filter Taroton bringing the ball game to you along with Bush Bavarian beer.
- 1:25:49America's most refreshing beer. Bob Gibson is applauded as he walks to the plate.
- 1:25:54Juan Marshall is on the mound for the Giants. His mates have backed him with three runs on six hits.
- 1:26:02The Cardinals have manufactured two runs on four hits.
- 1:26:05Here in the bottom of the fifth inning with the ball game sailing right along, the Cardinals need a run to get back in.
- 1:26:11Gibson struck out his first time. Marshall has struck out three.
- 1:26:19Walk one allowed four hit. Strike off.
- 1:26:25One of the hits a home run by Bill White. That was in the third inning.
- 1:26:29Cardinals picked up a run in the second that was given to them.
- 1:26:34But it still counts and there's only one behind and here's the pitch to Gibson.
- 1:26:38Swing and a miss as Marshall changed up on strike two. That's a dirty trick.
- 1:26:43A little change of pace for the pitcher like that.
- 1:26:49Nobody on her out. Gibson flooding out of the air coming up here.
- 1:26:58No balls, two strikes and Bob Gibson takes it low almost.
- 1:27:06Marshall brinned on that one. Paul Pryor calling the balls and strikes.
- 1:27:11Donatelli, Socorian, Benzon, a base umpire. Outfield playing Gibson in rather respectable depth.
- 1:27:18A pitch to him. Foul ball back here. Harry can't get through it.
- 1:27:26Getting closer Jack, getting closer. They just don't come here that often.
- 1:27:33One ball, two strikes. Halu, Mays and McCovey in the giant outfield.
- 1:27:42The pitch to Gibson. Low outside two and two.
- 1:27:46Tom Holler is the catcher. Davenport, Teagan, Hiller and Cepeda around the infield.
- 1:27:53For the Giants, Harry Walker number three coaching at first.
- 1:27:57Johnny Keene the manager, number five coaching at third.
- 1:28:01Gibson leading off here in the fifth trying to strike something for himself.
- 1:28:05Hits a foul off to the right. This Marshall has him way off-strike.
- 1:28:10But he's still alive up there. Two and two.
- 1:28:16The Yankees won Baltimore nothing. Yankees stay in first place in that American League.
- 1:28:22One game lead over Minnesota. Minnesota in the White Sox are scoreless in the fifth.
- 1:28:30Two balls, two strikes. Gibson waits, swings, lines went in the left.
- 1:28:34The ball might drop. Halu coming fast. Can't get it. Base hit.
- 1:28:38Gibson dropped a single in front of Halu. Halu is playing quite deep.
- 1:28:46Of course everybody knows that Gibson is a good athlete. Strong color, capable of swinging that bat.
- 1:28:52That's why Halu was as deep as he was and he couldn't get that one.
- 1:28:55Dropped in front of him. That's the lead off man, huh?
- 1:28:58Second time in the ball game the Cardinals have put that first man up there.
- 1:29:02Now the lead off man in the batting order, Kirk Flood, comes up.
- 1:29:05That's a tying run on first, nobody out.
- 1:29:08There's a good shot at him here, Jack.
- 1:29:12This Marshall is tough.
- 1:29:14In the first three innings the Cardinals left a man on in each frame.
- 1:29:17They went down in order in the fourth.
- 1:29:19Now Gibson starts the crowd to making some noise.
- 1:29:22The pitch to Flood swings and fouls it. Goes back to the screen.
- 1:29:27Flood hitting 326. He walked in the first inning.
- 1:29:31The only base on ball is given up by Marshall.
- 1:29:35He's flied out in the third.
- 1:29:39The Cardinals scored both of their runs after two men were out in the inning.
- 1:29:43Now there's nobody out. Gibson on first.
- 1:29:46Pitch to Flood is swung on and trying to go into right field. He fouled it off.
- 1:29:51He's trying to have a real good stroke at that ball as he shifted around in the batter's box trying to go into right.
- 1:29:59Big hole in right center. McCovey is guarding the right field foul line and Mays is playing Flood just a bit to pull.
- 1:30:06So that's where the big space is in the outfield, right center.
- 1:30:12But Marshall is way ahead of Flood. No balls, two strikes.
- 1:30:16Giant infield looking for the double play ball.
- 1:30:18Here's the pitch. Strike, got him. Slider on the outside corner. Flood is called out on strikes.
- 1:30:24Marshall had plenty on that one.
- 1:30:28That's his fourth strikeout.
- 1:30:34Hiller comes in from second base to talk to the giant hurler.
- 1:30:37Probably talking about who's going to cover second in case the ball zipped back to Marshall.
- 1:30:43Also want to know how he intends to pitch to Javier.
- 1:30:49That's the hitter. Javier has grounded out twice.
- 1:30:53Davenport already is a step in front of the bag at third.
- 1:30:58Javier with a 2-27 batting average. 0-2 in this game.
- 1:31:05Two home runs, 12 runs batted in for the year. No home runs here in St. Louis.
- 1:31:10It's a ground ball. That's through in the right field.
- 1:31:13Gibson's going to try to go to third. McCovey can't make a play on him.
- 1:31:16First and third, one out.
- 1:31:19That Gibson was really cuddling going around second base.
- 1:31:23He knew he had an inexperienced outfielder out there in McCovey.
- 1:31:26Javier bounced one through with Sepeda holding the runner close, and Gibson made up his mind.
- 1:31:31And he was going to go to third, and there he is with one out.
- 1:31:34Javier on his first base and wiped the batter.
- 1:31:37Well, Hoolies succeeded in doing what Kurt Fletter tried to do and failed.
- 1:31:43That's bounce the ball behind the runner in the right field.
- 1:31:46And with Gibson's speed, there's no doubt how the situation would develop.
- 1:31:54It's runners at first and third only one away, and Bill White is up there.
- 1:31:59And White hit one on the roof his last time.
- 1:32:02After lining back to Mary Schaul in the first inning, he homered his 10th home run of the year
- 1:32:09with two out and nobody on in the third.
- 1:32:11Now he's up there with one out, runners on at first and third.
- 1:32:14That's a tying run on at third base here in the fifth inning.
- 1:32:18And out of the air, the lead run on at first.
- 1:32:21Giants leading three to two.
- 1:32:22The infield is halfway in, either for the play at the plate or for the double play by way of second.
- 1:32:27The first pitch to Bill White.
- 1:32:29Foul off to the left, trying to go into left field with that one.
- 1:32:32He fouled it back.
- 1:32:37The hits are even up at six apiece now as Gibson had a leadoff single in this inning.
- 1:32:42And after a blood band, Avi Ehr got his first hit of the night.
- 1:32:46So each ball club has six hits.
- 1:32:48The only difference is in the scoring where the Giants lead three to two,
- 1:32:52but the Cardinals have these two men on with White and Muzio coming up.
- 1:32:56Outfield, a round to the right for Bill.
- 1:32:58Hitting 269, 10 home run.
- 1:33:0242 RBI's.
- 1:33:04Chance to make it 45 right here.
- 1:33:07One strike to count.
- 1:33:08Here's the pitch to him.
- 1:33:09Line drive in left center field.
- 1:33:11That's a base hit.
- 1:33:12The ball game's tied.
- 1:33:13Avi Ehr's going to third base and there's no play on him.
- 1:33:15A single by White ties it up.
- 1:33:20White gets his second hit.
- 1:33:21He really struck that ball beautifully over the head of the shortstop.
- 1:33:24They got it in left center.
- 1:33:26For his second run back at the end of the night.
- 1:33:29Diving in Gibson to tie the ball game 3-3.
- 1:33:32Avi Ehr's, scooted to third.
- 1:33:35He's the lead run.
- 1:33:37White on at first base.
- 1:33:38And Muzio is the batter.
- 1:33:40You know, we were talking earlier about White not having a success against his former teammates.
- 1:33:46He must have hurt us.
- 1:33:48Because he has certainly had it here tonight.
- 1:33:51He was robbed if he hit his first time on a line drive back to the pitcher.
- 1:33:55He would have driven in a run with us.
- 1:33:58Then he homered in the third.
- 1:34:00And now he just drove in the tying run in the fifth.
- 1:34:04Yes sir, the ball game's tied 3-3.
- 1:34:06The Cardinals have out hit.
- 1:34:07The Giants now 7-6.
- 1:34:10Still one man out.
- 1:34:11And Muzio up there with Avi Ehr on at third.
- 1:34:14And White on at first.
- 1:34:16The Giant infield again halfway in.
- 1:34:19Not a sold on in the Giant full-pen.
- 1:34:22Muzio's single his last time after popping out his first time at back.
- 1:34:27A man with six homers and 24 RBI's.
- 1:34:31The first pitch to him is on the way from Meyershawl.
- 1:34:33A bouncing ball back to the mound and they have Avi Ehr trapped between second and third.
- 1:34:38And he dives back and he is out at third.
- 1:34:41Meyershawl chased him back through to Davenport.
- 1:34:43And Davenport just did get Avi Ehr diving back in.
- 1:34:48Muzio tapped one back and the ball almost got by the Giant pitcher.
- 1:34:52He snared the ball, chased Avi Ehr back through to Davenport.
- 1:34:57And Davenport just did get Avi Ehr diving back in at first.
- 1:35:01So it's two on, two out.
- 1:35:03White down to second.
- 1:35:04Muzio on at first on the field of choice.
- 1:35:06And it puts it up to Boyer.
- 1:35:17Meyershawl played that ball in fine fashion.
- 1:35:21With the one exception and that was he almost held it too long and allowed Avi Ehr to get back to third.
- 1:35:26Here's Boyer who has been out twice.
- 1:35:28Grounded out, struck out.
- 1:35:29Up there, two on, two out.
- 1:35:30Ball game tied, 3-3.
- 1:35:32Fifth inning.
- 1:35:33The pitch.
- 1:35:34Popped up foul backing out of play.
- 1:35:40Boyer has been easy for Meyershawl.
- 1:35:42And this Meyershawl has been tough in the clinches.
- 1:35:44Cardinals have three hits in the inning.
- 1:35:46They've tied the game.
- 1:35:48And a real good opportunity a moment ago.
- 1:35:51First and third and one out.
- 1:35:53But Muzio hit the ball back to the mound.
- 1:35:57And it puts the load on the shoulders of Boyer hitting the number five spot this evening.
- 1:36:02Two on, two out.
- 1:36:08Meyershawl taking his time.
- 1:36:11Nobody down in the giant bullpen.
- 1:36:13Dark going all the way with his right-handed.
- 1:36:16Runners lead away.
- 1:36:20Here's the pitch to Ken Boyer.
- 1:36:22A drive to very, very deep center field.
- 1:36:24Mays going back, way back near the bleacher.
- 1:36:26That ball's out of here.
- 1:36:36Boyer wallops a three-run homer with two men out here in the fifth inning.
- 1:36:41To put the Cardinals out in front, six to three.
- 1:36:43That ball was really hit about 430 feet.
- 1:36:49With a count of one strike, he really blasted it.
- 1:36:53Mays chased it for a while, then stopped and watched it disappear into the bleacher customers out there.
- 1:36:59For Boyer's eighth homerun of the year, three RBIs giving him a total of 40.
- 1:37:05Putting the Cardinals out in front, six to three.
- 1:37:09Four runs are home here in the fifth inning.
- 1:37:11Cardinals six, Giants three, Sawatski the batter.
- 1:37:15Boyer really came through.
- 1:37:17And here's Sawatski.
- 1:37:19Kyle is 0 for 2.
- 1:37:20Takes a strike.
- 1:37:22Jack, the big thing about that blow, not only gives us the lead,
- 1:37:26but it came after Muehseel, it seemingly failed, and it picks up the ball, Claude,
- 1:37:32because if one guy doesn't do it, somebody else picks him up.
- 1:37:35That's when you're really in a good winning way.
- 1:37:40What happened that time, now they're going to occupy the Giant Bullpen down there in the right field corner.
- 1:37:46One strike to count to Carl Sawatski.
- 1:37:48He has five homeruns for the year.
- 1:37:50Here's a pitch from Marischal.
- 1:37:52Ball on its pause for station identification.
- 1:37:55This is the Cardinals, baseball network.
- 1:37:57This is KMUX AM and FM, St. Louis.
- 1:37:59See America's greatest caverns, Merrimack Caverns, one hour west of Lindbergh on U.S. 66, Stanton, Missouri.
- 1:38:04And here's Gotai, who has the single out of two picks.
- 1:38:10Jack, that was in the fifth inning last night, too.
- 1:38:13It looks like inning five is a lucky inning.
- 1:38:18Nice that it could happen every ball game like that.
- 1:38:21Sawatski leads off, and Gotai hits a base hit up the middle.
- 1:38:24Sawatski's going to stop at second.
- 1:38:26Gotai gets his second hit, and the Cardinals are really bombing Juan Marischal.
- 1:38:31He's not bowling him now. That's ten hits.
- 1:38:35That's three consecutive hits, and that's six hits in the inning.
- 1:38:41Just meeting that ball, stroking it, and the ball is dropping in there and jumping out of here.
- 1:38:48Four runs are home. The Cardinals lead six to three here in the fifth.
- 1:38:53Have two on and two out, and Doug Clemens is up there.
- 1:38:57Clemens, after getting a triple on a lost fly ball earlier, sent Mays back to the center field of law for his fly ball on the fourth,
- 1:39:04and Alvin Dart comes out of the dugout, and we might be seeing Bob Bolan in the ball game.
- 1:39:09Alvin Dart comes out to talk to his pitcher, Marischal.
- 1:39:13Ten hits off the right-hander.
- 1:39:15The Giants had a three-to-one lead at one time, and he's been pitching so well this year,
- 1:39:22that you almost felt that he was in terrific shape.
- 1:39:28Then three to two on a home run by White, and now this inning, single by Gibson, single by Avier, single by White to tie the game.
- 1:39:37Boyers, Homer, put the Cardinals ahead.
- 1:39:39Salotsky can go tie single, then a new pitcher's coming in.
- 1:39:42Jack, we were talking about the Giants' power a little earlier, and they certainly have it.
- 1:39:46Mays, McCubbies, Cepeda, Alou, Davenport.
- 1:39:51There's certainly nothing wrong with the power exhibited by our Cardinals.
- 1:39:55We've had two Homers tonight and a triple.
- 1:40:04So three of our ten blows have been for extra bases, and we certainly bunched them here in the fifth.
- 1:40:12After Muehsele tapped back to Marischal, a play on which Javier did a tremendous job,
- 1:40:19and almost got back in the third safely, it looked like the inning would be over with a tie score.
- 1:40:26But Kenny Boyer picked up the slack by Homering into the extreme center field corner of the left field bleachers.
- 1:40:34Marischal is leaving the field. Bobby Bowen is going to relieve.
- 1:40:39And I'd like to remind you that there are four air-conditioned Redbird Express lines operating for all Cardinal home games.
- 1:40:48These direct routes provide fast, cool transportation to and from Bush Stadium.
- 1:40:54You might try parking your car along a Redbird Express route, riding to the ballpark by bus.
- 1:41:00The routes are northwest, leaving from the Northland Shopping Center,
- 1:41:05the west end departing from the West Road Shopping Center, and from the Clayton Courthouse,
- 1:41:10the southwest from Jamison and Loughborough and St. Louis Hills,
- 1:41:14and also from the Crestwood Shopping Center and the downtown line from Third and Washington.
- 1:41:21For a Redbird Express route map and timetable, ask one of the ushers here at the stadium or phone the public service company direct for further information.
- 1:41:32Bob Bowen appears for the eleventh time this year for the Giants.
- 1:41:36He has no record, no wins, no losses.
- 1:41:40He takes over a situation, two on, two outs. Zawotsky on at second, Gotay on at first.
- 1:41:46Gotay has two hits tonight, and the first man that Bowen will face is Doug Clemens, who has a triple out of two trips.
- 1:41:54A left-handed batter hitting 231, looking for his first big league homer.
- 1:41:58They outfield deep to the right as Bowen tries to keep the Cardinals from scoring further.
- 1:42:03Cardinals lead 6-3, first pitch. Outside, ball one to Doug.
- 1:42:08Doug Clemens playing right field tonight, batting in the number eight spot.
- 1:42:14Four runs home in this inning. Cardinals have outslugged the Giants 10-6.
- 1:42:20That's in the hit department. And lead them 6-3 in the run department, and a chance to get more right here.
- 1:42:28And you need all you can get against this ball club.
- 1:42:31Bowen to the belt, to the plate to Clemens. Outside, that's ball two.
- 1:42:36The pitcher, Gibson, who started the inning with a base hit, would be next.
- 1:42:40Bowen pitched on the first of June in New York, gave up one earned run and two-thirds of an inning.
- 1:42:46Held the Mets while the Giants won that ball game.
- 1:42:51He's the early relief man, along with Duffalo. Stu Miller, their late-inning relief man.
- 1:42:58Two on, two outs, two balls, no strikes on number 22, Doug Clemens.
- 1:43:04And here's the pitch to him. Way outside, that's ball three.
- 1:43:103-0, Clemens keeps it going, and by the way, he might be swinging right here.
- 1:43:15He's labing to let him take a cut at it with 3-0, Jack. This kid can reach that Pavilion roof, you know.
- 1:43:22He still has not had his first big league homer, and this would be a terrific spot for it.
- 1:43:28With the pitcher coming up next, he might be swinging on 3-0.
- 1:43:32Here's the pitch, way outside, ball four, bases loaded.
- 1:43:36He never came close to the plate on four pitches.
- 1:43:40And Gibson comes up, he started it, he's up for the second time in the inning.
- 1:43:47So watch, he moves on to third, he'll tie down to second.
- 1:43:52Clemens's on with the walk, and Gibson, who has struck out in single in the ball game so far,
- 1:43:58and who now has a 6-3 lead, up there with a chance to continue the rally.
- 1:44:07I feel playing him straight away and deep. He dropped a single in left field his first time.
- 1:44:11One like that now would mean a couple of more runs.
- 1:44:15Bob Bolan, the pitcher, big tall right-hander, works off the full windup in the first pitch to Bob Gibson.
- 1:44:21Swings and misses, sinker ball, strike one.
- 1:44:24And the big guy, 6-4, 210 pounds.
- 1:44:28From South Carolina, Hickory Grove, in relief of Meyershaw.
- 1:44:38Runners lead off, first, second, and third.
- 1:44:40The next pitch to Gibson, he's going to bunt.
- 1:44:42He does, and it goes back way up into the seats for strike two.
- 1:44:47If he'd have straightened that one out, it would have been a line drive into right.
- 1:44:52He's in the hole now, no balls, two strikes.
- 1:44:56Siewatski, Gotay, and Clemens are on the bases.
- 1:44:59Gibson guarding that play.
- 1:45:01Bolan's windup. Here's the pitch, bouncing fouled on the third base line as Bolan jammed him with a fast ball.
- 1:45:08Cardinal 6, Giants 3, we're in the fifth inning.
- 1:45:13First game of a four-game series.
- 1:45:17And we can promise you a lot of action this weekend, tomorrow afternoon,
- 1:45:20a Sunday doubleheader, the pitch to Gibson, foul out of play.
- 1:45:24On the roof to the right, tomorrow it's Ladies Day at the ballpark,
- 1:45:28a 1-30 ballgame, Ray Sadecki for the Cardinals,
- 1:45:31Jack Sanford for the Giants, and a Sunday doubleheader at 1 o'clock.
- 1:45:37With some between-game activity.
- 1:45:39Make plans, come on out, bring the family.
- 1:45:41Let them watch the Giants and Cardinals.
- 1:45:43The pitch to Gibson, fly ball left-center, going to be caught.
- 1:45:47The inning's going to be over. Alou is there, and he has it.
- 1:45:51And the Cardinals score four.
- 1:45:53Gibson, fly to left. Four runs for the Cardinals.
- 1:45:58Six hits.
- 1:46:03No errors, and three men left.
- 1:46:05The end of five. Cardinals 6, Giants 3.
- 1:46:10Well, let's test your baseball IQ with another Tarot and Brain teaser now.
- 1:46:15See what you think about this play situation.
- 1:46:17There are two out, a man on third.
- 1:46:20The pitcher steps on the rubber, and just as he's about to start his wind-up,
- 1:46:24the runner breaks for home.
- 1:46:26The pitcher steps off the rubber and throws home to nail the runner.
- 1:46:30Now, you're the umpire. Is it a balk or isn't it?
- 1:46:34It's a tough decision to make.
- 1:46:37While there's one decision that's easy as apple pie to make,
- 1:46:41the decision is switched to dual-filter Tarot.
- 1:46:44Light up a Tarot and you'll taste flavor that you never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 1:46:50Remember, if you're hungry for flavor, Tarot's got it.
- 1:46:54Switch to dual-filter Tarot and taste what I'm talking about.
- 1:46:59Now about that call, balk or not, the pitcher did not balk.
- 1:47:05As long as he has not started his wind-up,
- 1:47:08the pitcher may step off the rubber at any time without committing a balk.
- 1:47:18You know, so far this year, prior to tonight,
- 1:47:23Bill White against his former teammates had only three hits and 20 times at bat,
- 1:47:28a batting average of only 150.
- 1:47:31Tonight, he's had two out of three against, driven in two runs,
- 1:47:37and should have, could have had another one.
- 1:47:40Here's McCovey, first pitch inside ball one.
- 1:47:43We're in the sixth, the Cardinals now lead six to three.
- 1:47:47The Phillies are murdering the Reds, seven to nothing in the fifth.
- 1:47:50Now the pitch on the way, swing and he misses.
- 1:47:53McCovey homered in the third.
- 1:47:57The Redbirds, out in front, six to three.
- 1:48:02That's hand bat awaits the fifth.
- 1:48:04There's a strike, a slider over the inside corner of the knees,
- 1:48:07and it's two strikes in the ball.
- 1:48:12Two years ago, Bill White against the Giants had only 16 hits
- 1:48:16and 80 times at bat, a 200 batting average.
- 1:48:19Although last year he did very much better, hitting 314 against them.
- 1:48:25But this year, he had really been an outland until tonight.
- 1:48:29He picked a good time to even up.
- 1:48:33The Phillies are leading the Reds, seven to nothing in the fifth.
- 1:48:38The Cubs and the Mets broke even today in one-run ball games.
- 1:48:44Two strikes in the ball.
- 1:48:47Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:48:49He followed tip, and the count stays.
- 1:48:52Two strikes, one ball.
- 1:48:54Willie McCovey singled in the first, homered in the third.
- 1:49:00Tito Francona just homered for Cleveland and tied up.
- 1:49:04Two strikes in the ball.
- 1:49:05Here's the pitch.
- 1:49:07Let off pitch outside.
- 1:49:10Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:49:17McCovey waits.
- 1:49:18Here's the pitch.
- 1:49:19He tapped it foul.
- 1:49:20He jammed him with a fastball that time right in on his fist.
- 1:49:24Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:49:27Nobody on, nobody out.
- 1:49:29We're in the sixth.
- 1:49:31Cardinals out in front, six to three.
- 1:49:33Trying for their fourth in a row.
- 1:49:35Here's the pitch.
- 1:49:37There she goes, way back.
- 1:49:38It might be out of here.
- 1:49:39Flood near the wall.
- 1:49:40It's got a chance, and he makes the play.
- 1:49:46McCovey, right deep to flood.
- 1:49:49On the warning track and dead center at the 422-foot mark.
- 1:49:54That's one away.
- 1:49:56Here's Orlando Cepeda, nothing out of two.
- 1:50:01Right hand batter.
- 1:50:03We're in the sixth.
- 1:50:07Bob Gibson gets it.
- 1:50:11Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:50:13It's a strike over the outside corner.
- 1:50:15Cepeda didn't like it.
- 1:50:18One strike and over.
- 1:50:26One man out.
- 1:50:28It's six to three, the Cardinals.
- 1:50:30There's a pitch and he missed the curveball.
- 1:50:32Strike two.
- 1:50:34Two strikes, over.
- 1:50:41Orlando Cepeda, right hand batter.
- 1:50:46Hitting 3.30 for the year.
- 1:50:48Here's the pitch.
- 1:50:49He foul-fifth and barely got a piece of it.
- 1:50:51It's one of the few times I've seen Cepeda when he didn't have a good cut.
- 1:50:56His back on his heels as he barely ticked the ball far.
- 1:50:59One out, nobody on.
- 1:51:01Ball game in the sixth.
- 1:51:03The Cardinals are leading six to three.
- 1:51:06Now the pitch.
- 1:51:08A bouncing ball far.
- 1:51:10Whitey Laquan coaching at third base recovers the ball.
- 1:51:13Wes Westrom coaching at first.
- 1:51:16Giant stars of the pass.
- 1:51:19Two strikes, no ball.
- 1:51:22Now the pitch on the way.
- 1:51:24Inside.
- 1:51:25Lowry Jansen is the pitching coach.
- 1:51:27He, too, used to star for the Giants.
- 1:51:29Alvin Dark, the manager, was one of their key players.
- 1:51:35Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:51:37Orlando Cepeda, right hand batter waits.
- 1:51:41Now the wind and here it is.
- 1:51:43Curve and he bounces it to short.
- 1:51:45No tie on the big hop.
- 1:51:46There's the throw in tie.
- 1:51:50So that's two away.
- 1:51:52Now to bring up Philippe Aillot.
- 1:51:54And you know this Gibson, Cepeda didn't hit the ball out of the infield against him last time he faced him in that one to nothing game.
- 1:52:04And hasn't hit the ball out of the infield against him tonight.
- 1:52:08If you hold that guy in seven times at bat without hitting the ball out of the infield, you are some pitcher.
- 1:52:16And Gibson is.
- 1:52:20Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:52:22And Aillot swings and misses.
- 1:52:25One strike and no ball.
- 1:52:31Philippe Aillot.
- 1:52:34Gibson's pitch.
- 1:52:35Let up and drilled in the left field.
- 1:52:38Here comes Muehseel.
- 1:52:39He dives, can't reach the ball and the base hit.
- 1:52:41Flood recovers and it's a double.
- 1:52:46Aillot double pass Muehseel who gave it a great try but couldn't reach it.
- 1:53:00The last time that Gibson faced the Giants beat him one to nothing.
- 1:53:06Cepeda fan fouled it to catch it twice and hit into a double play.
- 1:53:11The bases loaded.
- 1:53:14Here now is Jimmy Davenport.
- 1:53:17There's a pitch by Gibson.
- 1:53:18Curved strike call.
- 1:53:19Beauty.
- 1:53:20One strike no ball.
- 1:53:21Davenport doubled in the second.
- 1:53:23Fanned him a fourth.
- 1:53:26The Giants have made seven hits.
- 1:53:27The Cardinals have had ten.
- 1:53:29Here comes Bill White in to talk to Bob Gibson.
- 1:53:32Gibson's shooting for his seventh victory of the season.
- 1:53:37Last year he won 13.
- 1:53:42The score is 6 to 3.
- 1:53:44Jimmy Davenport the hitter.
- 1:53:46White's conversation with Gibson now has ended.
- 1:53:52One strike and no ball.
- 1:53:54Right hand batter waits.
- 1:53:57From the bow.
- 1:53:58Here's the pitch.
- 1:53:59It's a fastball a little bit high.
- 1:54:01That evens it up with a ball and a strike.
- 1:54:04Cleveland has taken a 9 to 8 lead in the seventh over the Reds side.
- 1:54:10They once led 6 to nothing.
- 1:54:13Now to stretch the 1-1 pitch.
- 1:54:15Here it is to Davenport.
- 1:54:17Swung and there's a drive.
- 1:54:18Muehseel back near the wall.
- 1:54:20He's got a room and he makes the catch.
- 1:54:23Muehseel went to the left of the wall for Davenport's long drive.
- 1:54:28That ends the inning with one hit.
- 1:54:31No runs, no errors on one left.
- 1:54:33We go to the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:54:35It's the Cardinals' sixth.
- 1:54:37The Giants' three.

- 1:55:48The Cardinals are leading 6 to 3.
- 1:55:52Here's Kurt Flood deleted off in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:55:56Bobby Bolan, a right-hander, taking his warm-up tosses.
- 1:56:00Gettin' cooler here. A ladies' day game tomorrow and a doubleheader Sunday.
- 1:56:12Reserved seats are now on sale.
- 1:56:16The Cardinals are about 59,000 ahead in attendance over a year ago.
- 1:56:22Here's a pitch to Flood. Look out! Hit by a pitch ball. Flood is hit by a pitch ball.
- 1:56:28Oh, that's a good start.
- 1:56:33Pretty mercenary, isn't it?
- 1:56:40Kurt isn't hurt, so it's an easy base runner.
- 1:56:44And here's Javier who's set up that fifth inning with a single and a right fair.
- 1:56:50Runner at first, nobody out. Javier waits. Bobby Bolan, a right-hander.
- 1:56:57Looks down, gets a sign. Here's a pitch he's gonna bunt. It's a strike call to Kurt Ball.
- 1:57:07One strike and no ball.
- 1:57:24One strike and no balls. And a pitch to Julian now. He squares around to bunt.
- 1:57:31Now time is call.
- 1:57:38There's Flood a lead.
- 1:57:41Here's Bolan's pitch. He bunts back towards the mound. It's a beauty. The only play at first base and he's out.
- 1:57:49Sacrifice by Javier, beautifully done. The play went from Bolan to Chuck Killer covering the back.
- 1:57:58Here's Bill White who's had a great night. He's hit the ball on the nose every time. Two out of three.
- 1:58:05You'll see it will be nice.
- 1:58:15Cardinal fans are here from Rhineland, Missouri, one of my favorite towns.
- 1:58:22Bill White waits. Here's the stretch by Bolan. Now the pitch. Here it is. A curveball low ball one.
- 1:58:31Marishaw, Juan Marishaw was knocked out. He had out six runs and ten hits in four and two-thirds innings.
- 1:58:40One ball, no strikes. Six to three in favor of the Redbirds. Bobby Bolan getting ready.
- 1:58:50Now the stretch, the hesitation. Here's the pitch. He pulled him on a slow curve.
- 1:58:59Don Larson, a right-hander formerly with the St. Louis Browns, pitched a perfect game in the World Series with the Yankees.
- 1:59:10Now with the Giants limbering up on the bullpen. One ball, one strike. Here's the pitch to White.
- 1:59:18Another slow curve, bounced down to the second baseman. Killers got it over to first in time.
- 1:59:24Now it's up to Mulesil now. Bob Grestey does sports out in Phoenix, here with his family, watching the ball game tonight.
- 1:59:43Phoenix, Arizona. A long way up.
- 1:59:51I understand they get our broadcast in there at night.
- 1:59:57Here's Mulesil with a runner at third, two gone. Stan has got one out of three.
- 2:00:04Left hand batter up there. Ball game in the sixth.
- 2:00:12There's a sign. Bolan starts his windup. Now the pitch on the way.
- 2:00:17It's in there, a let-up pitch for a strike ball. Here's Bolan throwing a lot of slow stuff.
- 2:00:26First time we've ever seen him use that technique. One strike to Noble.
- 2:00:33Two batter out, windup in the pitch. He swung and missed the slow curve. Two strikes, Noble.
- 2:00:46Two men around, six to three in favor of the Cardinals. Left hand batter digging in. Stan Mulesil.
- 2:00:59Bobby Bolan, lanky right-handed. Goes into the windup of the pitch. Fast ball, low.
- 2:01:11And it's two strikes and a ball. The ball popped out of Tom Holler's glove, but nothing happened.
- 2:01:22Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:01:31Bolan is set. Now the windup. Here's the pitch. High outside, another change of pace.
- 2:01:42Bobby Bolan comes from Hickory Gros, South Carolina. One of my favorite times.
- 2:01:48Six-four, weighs 210 pounds. 23 years old.
- 2:01:58Two balls, two strikes. Mulesil trying to get this run home. Bolan is ready.
- 2:02:06Time is called, Stan steps out of the box.
- 2:02:14Here's the 2-2 pitch on the way. Struck him out of the slow curve. Mulesil goes down swinging.
- 2:02:21So it is no runs, no hits, no errors, one left. At the end of seconds, Cardinals six, Giants three.
- 2:02:33You know, we all have our favorites. Ball players have favorite ball parks.
- 2:02:37You have a favorite vacation spot, perhaps, a place you're happiest when you just sit.
- 2:02:42Or you have a favorite kind of car. Well, if you like beer, you have a favorite beer. I have.
- 2:02:48And I'd like it to be your favorite, too. Tell you if you really like beer, you're going to like Bush Bavarian.
- 2:02:53Or perhaps you already do. Because it drinks good. That's the Bavarian way of saying.
- 2:02:59Bush Bavarian is a pleasure to drink. Gives you more true beer taste, more deep-down hardiness, and more real satisfaction.
- 2:03:08Not just that first glass, but glass after glass. How about it? Why not make Bush Bavarian your favorite, too?
- 2:03:16It's America's most refreshing beer, Bush Bavarian. Drinks good. Unusually good.
- 2:03:23Here at the ballpark, the Cardinals have out-hit the Giants ten to seven.
- 2:03:26Lead the Giants six to three at the end of six, and we'll pause for station identification right here.
- 2:03:31This is the Cardinals. Baseball network.
- 2:03:34This is KMOX AM and FM St. Louis. How many freight experts on your staff?
- 2:03:39As many as you need to solve shipping problems, courtesy Wabash. A call to Wabash puts them to work.
- 2:03:45This is Harry Carrey with Jack Butt. Here's the first pitch here to Jose Pagan, and it's high ball one.
- 2:03:55We're in the top of the seventh. The Cardinals are leading six to three.
- 2:04:00Redbirds trying for their fourth in a row.
- 2:04:03Now the line. Here's the pitch. He swings, and he misses.
- 2:04:09Gibson is fans six.
- 2:04:12Bush Bavarian beer, your host, along with dual-filter Tarot and cigarettes.
- 2:04:21Jim Perry or Gaylord Perry is warming up in the bullpen.
- 2:04:26Here's a strike two call to Jose Pagan.
- 2:04:38Now to wind up, the pitch. A little looping top fly. Javier is there behind second base, and he makes the catch.
- 2:04:47Pagan pop to Javier. That's one away, and here's Tom Holler from Lockport, Illinois, former University of Illinois football star.
- 2:04:57The Cardinals got rid of an old nemesis tonight, Juan Marichal, who had beaten them twice previously.
- 2:05:06Here's the pitch to Holler. It's a fastball low and inside, ball one.
- 2:05:13Philadelphia leads Cincinnati, seven to two at the end of five.
- 2:05:18Here's the pitch. Inside, count ball two.
- 2:05:29Two balls, no strikes on the left-hand hitter. Now the pitch is outside, ball three.
- 2:05:40Three balls, no strike. Tom Holler, left-hand batter. Here's the pitch. Way outside, he walked him.
- 2:05:51That's the first pass given up by Gibson. Let's see who the pinch hitter is going to be.
- 2:05:59Motta, maybe.
- 2:06:04Matty Alou. Matty Alou, the younger brother of Felipe.
- 2:06:15Twenty-three years old, an outfielder. Dining here for Bobby Boland. Matty Alou is hitting.256.
- 2:06:24No homers and four runs batted in. He was hurt for about three weeks.
- 2:06:37One man out, a runner at first base. Ball game in the seventh. Here's the pitch.
- 2:06:42He takes a strike over the inside corner of the knee. One strike, cano ball. One gone, we're in the seventh.
- 2:06:53Footballer Don Owens. Here's the pitch. Lined in the left, the base hit. Matty Alou, single shot play in the left field.
- 2:07:09Here now is Chuck Hiller. And then Willie Mays.
- 2:07:16You never can have too many runs against these fellows.
- 2:07:19Lindy McDaniel has started to warm up. With one out, Gibson walked Holler on four straight pitches.
- 2:07:26Matty Alou lined a single left. Here's Chuck Hiller now. He's had one out of three. Let's hand it back to her.
- 2:07:33Here's the stretch. Gibson's delivery. Sliced it foul into the stands and he's on the third base side.
- 2:07:40Strike one. Hiller hitting.281. No homers and 20 runs batted in.
- 2:07:48Lined hard to center. Singled hard to center. Foul out to the catch. Here's the pitch.
- 2:07:55He held up in time. The fastball is low. The Cardinals hoping for a double play that would take them out of trouble.
- 2:08:04Willie Mays would be next. One ball, one strike. Now the stretch, time call.
- 2:08:16Larson and Gaylard Perry down in the bullpen.
- 2:08:26Here's the pitch. Foul back. Out of play.
- 2:08:34And the count, two strikes in the bull. Chuck Hiller.
- 2:08:41Makes his home in McHenry, Illinois. Chokes up on the bat, left-handed batter.
- 2:08:46Little fella gets a piece of that ball. Here's the stretch. Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:08:51Here's the pitch. Curveball outside. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:08:58And Willie Mays would be next.
- 2:09:04Hiller straddles that play waiting. Now Gibson's pitch. Here it is. A ground ball to the right, a face-in.
- 2:09:12Here's a man going to score. Out for the ball is Clement. Fires towards the plate. He is safe.
- 2:09:21Chuck Hiller singles sharply in the right field.
- 2:09:27Haller scored to make it 6-4. And here is Willie Mays.
- 2:09:34The tying runs on base, the leading run at the plate.
- 2:09:41Zolotsky out talking to Bob Gibson. Might be just trying to stall long enough to give Lindy a chance to get ready.
- 2:09:52Gibson got the first man out easily. But a harbinger of things to come was a four-pitch walk to Tom Haller.
- 2:10:06His first walk of the game. Gibson will stand out of pitch to Willie Mays.
- 2:10:15Willie stands twice. Homer, now here comes manager Johnny Keene out. Lindy McDaniels down in the bullpen getting ready.
- 2:10:27And maybe this is going to be the spot for the change. The game's on the bases. The lead runs at the plate.
- 2:10:38I believe it will be a new pitcher here.
- 2:10:41Johnny Keene talking to Bob Gibson. Also talking to the first base umpire, Augie Donatelli.
- 2:10:48And it will be McDaniel being brought in.
- 2:10:53I bet what John's saying to Donatelli is, Augie, I could delay this thing by just walking off the field now.
- 2:11:00But I'm going to bring in McDaniel. I don't think he's quite ready yet.
- 2:11:08So I'm going to talk to Gibson here to give him a chance to get warmed up.
- 2:11:15And that's what it is. McDaniel comes in. And Lindy again is in the spot where there's no margin for error, boy.
- 2:11:26Willie Mays at the plate. The tying runs at first and second and only one away.
- 2:11:33Gibson while he was in there, six and a third inning. Allowed four runs, nine hits, struck out six, walked one, and he departs with two men on the bases.
- 2:11:42And that's it.
- 2:12:05McDaniel has appeared now in 18 games. He's won two, he's lost three.
- 2:12:14You save one ball game.
- 2:12:21Bob Gibson is the pitcher of record as of now.
- 2:12:27Gummitter just homered for the Phillies with a man on. And so they've increased their lead over the Reds to nine to two.
- 2:12:40Willie Mays now faces a fresh pitcher.
- 2:13:00Lindy has been pitching very fine baseball these last few outs. Turned in a tremendous job against the Reds, you know, Tuesday night.
- 2:13:11Here is Willie Mays, oh, for the double play.
- 2:13:18Right hand bat awaits. Maddie Alou is the runner at second base. Chuck Hiller at first base.
- 2:13:31There's Lindy getting set. Into the stretch he goes. And now the pitch.
- 2:13:39Here it is. I foul. White might reach it. He's racing for it. Running hard. He's there. He makes the catch. Here is Maddie Alou going from second now to third.
- 2:13:50After the catch. But we got the big man out. And there's two gone. Runners at first and third.
- 2:13:57And White through to the right base to prevent the tying run. Hiller at first base, advancing down to second.
- 2:14:04Good face foul. Go tie. Get down on one knee to block that throw from White to make sure it didn't get away.
- 2:14:10Allow that runner to advance further than third base. There's one big man, but they get bigger all the time here.
- 2:14:18A big huddle going on around the mound. All of the infielders are in on it, except Bill White.
- 2:14:23Along with manager Johnny Keene. They're discussing what to do with Willie McCubby.
- 2:14:29Runners are at first and third. McCubby, a fastball hitter, a lowball hitter, and those are McDaniel's best pitches.
- 2:14:44Stu Miller has gotten ready now. Looks like he's going to take over in the bottom half of the sitting against the card.
- 2:14:52McCubby is homered and singled and hit the ball 422 feet, the only time we got him out.
- 2:15:08Here's the stretch. And Lindy's pitch to the left-handed batter is a strike, a fastball, just above the belt buckle.
- 2:15:17One strike, a no ball. The outfield squared around towards right end, very deep.
- 2:15:24One strike, no balls. Left-hand batter waiting. Lindy McDaniel gets set. The pitch on the way down.
- 2:15:31And here it is. Followed back. He's way ahead of him. Two strikes, no ball.
- 2:15:40And Sawatski goes out to talk to Lindy. And Gotay is backing up McDaniel down there. Sure, Larry.
- 2:15:47Actually, he's on the second base side of the bag. If McCubby lines a single or center, Jack, it'll be an easy out.
- 2:15:54Gotay is on the second base side of the bag. I wonder if they know where he is.
- 2:16:01Two strikes, no ball. Now the stretch. Ready. And the pitch. Here it is. High pop foul again and back.
- 2:16:10Boy, he is. He's challenging him with his fastball.
- 2:16:13That's right. He's just pumping. He's thrown three fastballs and Sawatski's holding the target just a bit to the inside of the plate, Harry.
- 2:16:18But belt high, just pumping that ball.
- 2:16:22Two strikes, no balls. Left-hand batter waiting. Tying runs at first and third.
- 2:16:29Here's the stretch. And now the pitch to McCubby. And here it is. Low and inside, said the umpire.
- 2:16:38Sawatski had started to walk off the field. Paul Pryor said no, and Sawatski's arguing with him now.
- 2:16:47He aimed for that inside corner at the knees and just barely missed.
- 2:16:53Two strikes and a ball. Runners at first and third. Now the stretch. The hesitation.
- 2:17:01Here's the pitch. On the way. Bounces in front of the plate. Nice stop there by Sawatski.
- 2:17:08Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:17:14Six to four, the Cardinals lead. But the Giants are threatening. They've scored one. They have runners at first and third.
- 2:17:23Two out. McCubby the batter. Here's the stretch. The 2-2 pitch.
- 2:17:29Now, here it is. He's stuck him out. McCubby missed the high fastball.
- 2:17:38And there's a great job of relief fishing, boy. He got maze at McCubby with the tying runs on base.
- 2:17:46And it's one run, two hits, no errors, and two left.
- 2:17:52We're going to the bottom of the seventh. It's the Cardinals six, the Giants four.
- 2:17:58What's your favorite beer to do? Everybody knows. What drinks good?
- 2:18:05Everybody knows Bush-Bavarian drinks good.
- 2:18:12The pleasure of more smooth taste, more deep heartiness, more real satisfaction. Bush-Bavarian.
- 2:18:20Drinks good. Bush-Bavarian. Drinks good.
- 2:18:29The Bavarian way of saying you get more taste, more heartiness, more satisfaction.
- 2:18:39Drinks good. Bush-Bavarian. Drinks good.
- 2:18:45How about some tonight? Bush-Bavarian. Drinks good. Drinks good. Bush-Bavarian. Drinks good.
- 2:18:56326 sugar, 17,935.
- 2:19:08Your host Bush-Bavarian beer along with dual-filtered tarots and cigarettes.
- 2:19:13We're going to the bottom of the seventh and Don Warson is the new pitcher.
- 2:19:26Armily with the Browns.
- 2:19:30The old Brownies never die.
- 2:19:36Here's Boyer to lead off. Warson who pitches without a windup.
- 2:19:42There's a strike call to Slater.
- 2:19:51Warson 33 years old now.
- 2:19:57Stands 6'4", weighs 230. One strike, no balls. Here's the pitch.
- 2:20:02A ground ball back off his legs and Boyer's going to be safe.
- 2:20:08Warson just didn't get down on that. Ball wasn't hit very hard, but it is a hit.
- 2:20:16Warson wasn't in position to feel the ball.
- 2:20:20So there's a runner at first now with nobody out and here's Carl Sawotsky.
- 2:20:25Redbirds leading 6'4".
- 2:20:27Just think, one like that Harry would have spoiled that perfect game he pitched in the World Series.
- 2:20:35Boy what a performance that was.
- 2:20:38The rarities of all rarities, a perfect game and then they have it in the World Series.
- 2:20:47Here's Sawotsky.
- 2:20:58Carl has had one hit, one out of three.
- 2:21:02Left hand batter up there, the stretch. Here's Warson's pitch.
- 2:21:06Swings and he pops a foul back and out of play. One strike and no ball.
- 2:21:12Souvenirsville on that.
- 2:21:17Warson was a losing pitcher in a ball game in Chicago Wednesday.
- 2:21:25Walked four men in, walked four men and forced in the winning run.
- 2:21:32Don Landrum drawing the final walk.
- 2:21:36One strike, no ball.
- 2:21:38Sawotsky to hit it. Boyer at first base.
- 2:21:41Now the stretch.
- 2:21:43Here's the toss over there, the runner back.
- 2:21:47Don Warson.
- 2:21:52With the Browns in 53.
- 2:21:58The Browns are moved to Baltimore, he was with Baltimore in 54.
- 2:22:01Back to the Miners in 55.
- 2:22:06Here's the stretch.
- 2:22:08Pitch now to Sawotsky. Strike is called, a fast ball to the knee.
- 2:22:14Warson was traded along with pitcher Mike Bliska and Bob Turley, catcher Daryl Johnson, first baseman Dick Krahosky, shortstop Billy Hunter, and outfielder Ted Del Garcio and Jim Fridley.
- 2:22:34Here's the pitch.
- 2:22:35Sawotsky takes it outside.
- 2:22:37Far, pitcher Harry Bird, Jim McDonald and Bill Miller, catchers Hal Smith and Gus Triandis, second baseman Don Leppard, third baseman Cal Segrist, shortstop Willie Miranda, and outfielder Gene Woodlick.
- 2:22:56Triandis I guess is all that the Orioles have left.
- 2:23:01Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:23:05Now the pitch outside.
- 2:23:08Two and two.
- 2:23:12And Turley is all the Yankees have left.
- 2:23:17Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:23:21The runner at first base is Kenny Boyer.
- 2:23:25Boyer hit the three-run homer in the fifth that gave us the lead.
- 2:23:29Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:23:35Warson gets set.
- 2:23:37Into the stretch he goes.
- 2:23:39Now the pitch to Ip and steps back off the rubber.
- 2:23:44Takes the squeeze of the rising bird.
- 2:23:47Gets all set again.
- 2:23:49Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:23:53The runner at first is Boyer.
- 2:23:59Sawotsky waits.
- 2:24:02Warson off the stretch.
- 2:24:04Now lobs the ball over the first leisurely.
- 2:24:09Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:24:14Now the pitch.
- 2:24:17Again the throw to first though.
- 2:24:19They must be expecting Boyer to go.
- 2:24:22Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:24:31Sawotsky straddles that play.
- 2:24:34Warson gets set.
- 2:24:36And now the pitch. Here it is.
- 2:24:39He kept it foul.
- 2:24:41Bob-Oll Boyer with race to second return.
- 2:24:48Red Sox are batting in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:24:51Trailing nine to eight.
- 2:24:54Cleveland had a six to nothing lead.
- 2:24:56Then Boston took the lead eight to six.
- 2:24:59Then the Indians with Woody Held and Tito Francona hitting home runs in the seventh.
- 2:25:06And now taking the lead, nine to eight.
- 2:25:10Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:25:15Warson gets set.
- 2:25:19And the pitch to Sawotsky.
- 2:25:21Foul tipped into a strikeout.
- 2:25:25Sawotsky goes down swinging.
- 2:25:27Went away.
- 2:25:29And here's Julio Gotay. He's had two out of three.
- 2:25:40Julio is raising that batting average every day.
- 2:25:47Right hand hitter.
- 2:25:49One out, one on.
- 2:25:51Six to four in favor of the cut.
- 2:25:54Now the stretch.
- 2:25:56Redding.
- 2:25:58And the pitch.
- 2:26:00A bouncy ball down the third base line. The only play at first.
- 2:26:02There's a long peg in time. Got it.
- 2:26:05Jimmy Davenport on a nice play.
- 2:26:07Boy, that kid is some third baser.
- 2:26:13Well, here's Clemens with a chance to drive in a run now.
- 2:26:17Runner at second base with two out.
- 2:26:23That ball was hit slowly down the third base line, but Davenport, playing shallow, was able to race in, scoop the ball and fire.
- 2:26:33The ball had a lot of stuff on it too, and it came up to Davenport, almost handcuffed him.
- 2:26:38Had a great arm though, and he made that play.
- 2:26:40A smaller dismount to talk to Larson, reminding him that the pitcher, Lindy McGangin, is due to bat next, and first base is open with Clemens the hitter.
- 2:26:49Two men are out. A runner in scoring position, Doug Clemens.
- 2:26:54He's had one out of two.
- 2:26:56Left hand batter up there.
- 2:26:58Now the stretch.
- 2:27:00And the pitch.
- 2:27:02It's outside ball one.
- 2:27:04He's not going to get a good ball to hit. You can almost bet on that.
- 2:27:09The base is open.
- 2:27:11One ball, no strikes.
- 2:27:15Clemens walked in the fifth, flied out in the fourth.
- 2:27:19Got a fly ball triple when Mays lost the ball in the lights in the second.
- 2:27:25Now Larson gets ready.
- 2:27:28And the pitch.
- 2:27:30And here it is.
- 2:27:31Fast ball outside, ball two.
- 2:27:34Two balls, no strikes.
- 2:27:36They're going to put them on now.
- 2:27:39Clemens is going to be intentionally fast.
- 2:27:45They're going to put Clemens on to get to McDaniel.
- 2:27:53So it'll be runners of first and second, with two out in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:28:00Cardinals leading six to four.
- 2:28:03The Giants have Cepeda, Philippe Allou, and Davenport coming up in the eighth.
- 2:28:14There's Lindy coming out.
- 2:28:16Runners of first and second.
- 2:28:20McDaniel hasn't had a hit this year in seven times.
- 2:28:26McDaniel won a first time in the fourth and one.
- 2:28:33Catcher Holler goes out the clock to pitcher Larson.
- 2:28:42The ball game in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:28:44The Cardinals are leading six to four.
- 2:28:55Larson looks down, gets his side.
- 2:28:58Now the stretch.
- 2:29:00And the pitch.
- 2:29:02Strike the curve ball over the outside corner.
- 2:29:05One strike and over.
- 2:29:09Two men on and two men out.
- 2:29:11We're in the seventh.
- 2:29:14Six to four, the Cardinals lead.
- 2:29:19Don Larson, 33-year-old veteran, gets set.
- 2:29:24Half a swing and a foul-tip strike through.
- 2:29:28Two strikes, no ball.
- 2:29:37Cardinal fans and Bush-Bavarian fans from Flint Hill, Missouri are on hand tonight.
- 2:29:47Two strikes, no ball.
- 2:29:52Lindy McDaniel waiting.
- 2:29:55Now the pitch.
- 2:29:57And here it is.
- 2:29:58Inside fastball.
- 2:30:00Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:30:03Bob Gibson started this ball game.
- 2:30:06Pitch six, fine innings.
- 2:30:08Weakened in the seventh.
- 2:30:10Lindy came on to rescue him.
- 2:30:13Gibson is a pitcher of record as it stands right now.
- 2:30:16Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:30:20The right hand batter waiting.
- 2:30:23Now the pitch.
- 2:30:24And here it is.
- 2:30:26Stuck them out.
- 2:30:28McDaniel goes down swinging.
- 2:30:30And it's one hit and no runs, no errors.
- 2:30:32Two left.
- 2:30:33At the end of seven, full innings.
- 2:30:35The Cardinals sixth, the Giants fourth.
- 2:30:43This is Harry Carrey with Jack Buck as we go into the top of the eighth.
- 2:30:47Jack, if we can get them out one, two, three here, we might not have to worry about Mays and McCovey again in this ball game.
- 2:30:54That's right, but it's a tough order with Cepeda, Philippe Ballou, and Davenport coming up against Lindy McDaniel.
- 2:31:00In addition, these Giants have a good bench with fellows like Keane and Bailey.
- 2:31:05Long way to go and a tough road to hoe for Lindy McDaniel who starts the eighth inning and the first pitch to Cepeda who's 0 for 3 and it's over but low.
- 2:31:13Ball one.
- 2:31:15The Cardinals scored the first round of the ball game in the second.
- 2:31:18The Giants got three to lead 3-1 in the third.
- 2:31:21The Cardinals made it 3-2 in the third.
- 2:31:23The Cardinals won ahead 6-3 in the fifth.
- 2:31:26It's now 6-4, Cardinals.
- 2:31:28Cepeda takes a strike at the knees.
- 2:31:29It's 1-1.
- 2:31:31Orlando thought it was a bit low, steps out, picks up some dirt.
- 2:31:36Lindy McDaniel in relief for Bob Gibson.
- 2:31:38The Cardinals have out hit the Giants 11-9.
- 2:31:41That's the sort of a ball game we've had here.
- 2:31:43A couple of corners of the field.
- 2:31:45A couple of home runs for each club.
- 2:31:47Mays and McCovey for the Giants.
- 2:31:49White and Boyer for the Cardinals.
- 2:31:51There's a foul off to the right now to play.
- 2:31:55Jack, I wish we could change the rules and bring Gibson back in to pitch to Cepeda.
- 2:31:59Yeah.
- 2:32:01He did a job on him.
- 2:32:02Cepeda ground it out to short, popped out to short, and ground it out to short again.
- 2:32:06So he didn't go die.
- 2:32:07I've been playing pepper all night.
- 2:32:11Cepeda with 15 home runs and 55 RBI.
- 2:32:15Willie Mays got his 20th home run here tonight, and Willie McCovey hit his eighth.
- 2:32:20Bill White hit his tenth, and Boyer hit his eighth.
- 2:32:24One ball, two strikes.
- 2:32:25McDaniel trying to get this lead off, man, here in the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:32:28And it's low, 2-2.
- 2:32:33The Mets and the Cubs split this afternoon.
- 2:32:35The Mets won the first game from Chicago, 4-3, snapping a 17-game losing streak.
- 2:32:39And then the Cubs came back to win the second game, 3-2.
- 2:32:43Pittsburgh and Milwaukee rained out.
- 2:32:45Here's the 2-2 pitch to Cepeda.
- 2:32:47Struck him out.
- 2:32:49He went down swinging on a pitch down around the knees, most likely that forkball.
- 2:32:54And Cepeda is 0-4 for the night.
- 2:32:56McDaniel has banned the last two men that he has faced.
- 2:32:59He's retired the only three that he has faced.
- 2:33:02Delip Palu comes to the plate.
- 2:33:05Delip is 2-3.
- 2:33:06He struck out in the second.
- 2:33:07He's single in the third, was out stealing.
- 2:33:10And then he doubled in the sixth.
- 2:33:14The Giants have only left five men now in the Cardinals' nine.
- 2:33:17There's a bouncing ball to third.
- 2:33:18Big hop to Boyer.
- 2:33:19Good glove.
- 2:33:20Good throw.
- 2:33:21Two out.
- 2:33:22Delip Palu went for the first one and bounced to Boyer.
- 2:33:25A perfect hop to him.
- 2:33:27Kenny waited.
- 2:33:29Had a good grip on the ball, taking his time, took a couple of steps forward first, and
- 2:33:33gunned him out.
- 2:33:34Two gone.
- 2:33:36Only four more outs to get.
- 2:33:41Cardinals have only won two out of six against San Francisco.
- 2:33:44This year, here's Davenport, a right-handed batter.
- 2:33:46He takes a strike, a fastball, and Lindy seems right tonight.
- 2:33:50Oh boy, I tell you, this guy's really throwing that ball.
- 2:33:55He's humming.
- 2:33:56He did quite a job in the seventh to keep the score 6-4, as it is now.
- 2:34:00The pitch is in the dirt to Davenport, one and one.
- 2:34:03Two out here, nobody on.
- 2:34:04Davenport doubled, struck out, and lined out to left.
- 2:34:08Good hit, as it's felt amongst the leaders in the league, 3-31, in a fine third baseman.
- 2:34:15A ball and a strike to count.
- 2:34:17McDaniel's into the windup, picks and fires, bouncing Palu.
- 2:34:22Bounced off of Davenport while he was still in the batter's box.
- 2:34:24He's in the hole now, one and two.
- 2:34:28A lot of excitement in the seventh when the Giants scored a run to make it 6-4, and they
- 2:34:31had the tying runs on at first and third, and only one out, and Mays and McCubby coming up.
- 2:34:36McDaniel came in from the bullpen and got Mays and a foul ball, and he struck out McCubby.
- 2:34:43One of the highlights of this ballgame.
- 2:34:45Here's the one-two pitch, and Davenport hits a bouncing foul down the third base line.
- 2:34:49Whitey Lockman feels it.
- 2:34:52Whitey is coaching down there at third, a fellow who was with the Cardinals briefly.
- 2:34:57And Wes Westrom, coaching down at first for Alvin Dark.
- 2:35:05One ball, two strikes, and Jim Davenport takes it high, two and two.
- 2:35:12The other Giants coach is Larry Jansen, their pitching coach.
- 2:35:17Two balls, two strikes to count.
- 2:35:19Two out, nobody on, eighth inning.
- 2:35:21Cardinals leading the Giants, 6-4.
- 2:35:23Davenport the hitter, McDaniel into the windup.
- 2:35:25Here's the two-two pitch, and he struck him out.
- 2:35:28Called out on strikes, and he set him down one, two, three.
- 2:35:31And Davenport wants to argue, but can't quite bring himself to do it.
- 2:35:35A good pitch by Lindy on the outside edge, and Lindy has struck out.
- 2:35:40Three of the five men is retired.
- 2:35:42Down in order go the Giants.
- 2:35:44Cardinals come to bat on the bottom of the eighth, trying to get more.
- 2:35:47Bobby Gene Smith is getting ready to go in the ballgame.
- 2:35:50The Cardinals lead 6-4.
- 2:35:53On the bottom of the eighth, everybody's staying around for this one,
- 2:35:56because it's far from over.
- 2:35:58No lower in the bottom of the eighth than the Cardinals lead 6-4.
- 2:36:01Owen Larson, the third Giants hurler of the night, faces little Kurt Blood.
- 2:36:06First pitch.
- 2:36:07Look out, Kurt, it hit him in the back, and Blood has been hit by a pitch for the second time tonight.
- 2:36:12That's the way to get it started, Kurt.
- 2:36:15We'll do anything for a rally, Kurt Blood and me.
- 2:36:21One time he was plump, but I'm sure that Larson didn't want to do that.
- 2:36:26That leadoff man on there, Blood hitting 3.26.
- 2:36:30Pardon me, that's the third time this week that he's been hit.
- 2:36:35He's going to get paid by the Brews next year.
- 2:36:38I don't mean B-R-E-W-S.
- 2:36:43Blood on there, Javier up there, and they're looking for the bunt.
- 2:36:48This is where the sixth inning started, but the Cardinals couldn't score.
- 2:36:51Haven't scored since the fifth.
- 2:36:53Javier, pitch out.
- 2:36:55But nothing doing as Blood scrambles back to first.
- 2:36:58They had a pitch out on, but Sepeda was coming in.
- 2:37:02You saw Howler had no one to throw to.
- 2:37:04Javonpour charging in from third.
- 2:37:06The shortstop begun.
- 2:37:07Racing over to cover second.
- 2:37:08Hiller, the second baseman, going over to cover first, and Sepeda charging in.
- 2:37:13Everybody moving.
- 2:37:14Hiller is banking, ready to bank up the throw.
- 2:37:18Javier has a thing about it.
- 2:37:20Three trips, a key hit in the fifth inning.
- 2:37:23Larson stepped off the rubber.
- 2:37:25Oftentimes the pitcher will do that to see if the batter will tip his hand.
- 2:37:28See if he can move that bat, and the pitcher can learn if the bunt is still on.
- 2:37:32Blood on at first, nobody out.
- 2:37:35Six-four Cardinals, eighth inning.
- 2:37:38To the belt is Larson.
- 2:37:41Over the plate, Javier misses as he tries to bunt, and it's one-and-one.
- 2:37:46I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him swing away here the way they're rushing him, Jack.
- 2:37:51He hits that ball on the ground pretty much.
- 2:37:53By the way, Eddie Pursue, Homer, in the ninth inning for the Red Sox, and they tied up Cleveland.
- 2:37:58Nine and nine.
- 2:38:00Blood on at first.
- 2:38:01He might be going with a pitch.
- 2:38:03They might be putting on a hit-and-run or a plunge-and-run,
- 2:38:06because that Davenport is way in from third base.
- 2:38:10Larson steps off the rubber.
- 2:38:13He's thinking in terms of flood running, too.
- 2:38:17That feels shallow for Javier.
- 2:38:20He has a look down at Johnny Keane.
- 2:38:24The Cardinals trying to add to their two-run lead before going into the ninth inning.
- 2:38:30Don Larson, the big right-hander, checks the runner.
- 2:38:34Javier is going to bunt.
- 2:38:35He takes it low.
- 2:38:36Ball two, two-and-one.
- 2:38:39He scored a round in bunting position long before Larson threw the ball,
- 2:38:43had a good look at it, and took it low.
- 2:38:49Nobody gone here in the eighth.
- 2:38:55Pittsburgh at Milwaukee Rain.
- 2:38:57Boy, they've had some miserable weather up there this year.
- 2:39:01It was cold when we were up there last weekend.
- 2:39:04They were ice fishing in Lake Michigan.
- 2:39:11Cepeda holding the runner flood close.
- 2:39:13Larson taking his time.
- 2:39:17Larson's done a good deal to slow this game down.
- 2:39:23Now he has a sign from Holler.
- 2:39:27Two balls and a strike, a good pitch to run on.
- 2:39:31Here's the pitch.
- 2:39:32Strike called.
- 2:39:34He was going to bunt, but took it two-and-two.
- 2:39:37Johnny King puts his hands on his hips and looks in at Javier
- 2:39:42to say what he wanted to do.
- 2:39:43Hit your bat.
- 2:39:46Two-and-two.
- 2:39:52Bill White will be next.
- 2:39:56Blood hit by a pitch ball to start the inning.
- 2:39:59Javier with a two-two count.
- 2:40:03Here's the pitch.
- 2:40:04He's going to bunt again.
- 2:40:05He does down the first baseline.
- 2:40:06It's a tough one to cover.
- 2:40:07First base, and he's safe at first.
- 2:40:11Cepeda charged in.
- 2:40:13Larson charged over.
- 2:40:14Hiller was a little bit late covering.
- 2:40:16He thought somebody else was going to get there.
- 2:40:18And by the time the second baseman covered the bag,
- 2:40:20Javier had scooted those 90 feet, and he was there
- 2:40:23with a base hit, bunting on a two-two count.
- 2:40:26Well, Hoolie gambled on that and made it work,
- 2:40:29and winds up with a base hit beside.
- 2:40:32Who finally fielded the ball?
- 2:40:34I think it was Cepeda, huh?
- 2:40:36Cepeda picked it up.
- 2:40:39Larson could have fielded it.
- 2:40:42Then when you looked down and saw
- 2:40:43Hiller and Javier racing for the bag,
- 2:40:45you knew that Javier would be in good shape.
- 2:40:48Actually, Hiller got there before him,
- 2:40:50but Cepeda had to wait a count before he could throw the ball.
- 2:40:54And now the batter is white, and he might be bunting.
- 2:40:57Grout making a racket.
- 2:40:58Cardinals lead 6-4, two on, nobody out.
- 2:41:01Bill White has a single and a home run out of four trips.
- 2:41:04He also lined out.
- 2:41:06Left-handed batter.
- 2:41:07Larson, the right-hander, pitches,
- 2:41:09and he swings and misses, strike one.
- 2:41:17He was swinging away.
- 2:41:19Cardinals figure that if White sacrifices,
- 2:41:22the Giants will put Musial on
- 2:41:24and have the right-handed hitting boyer up there
- 2:41:26against the right-handed batter Larson.
- 2:41:28So perhaps taking their chances with the left-handed hitters,
- 2:41:32they have White swinging away.
- 2:41:34At least he was in the first one.
- 2:41:37Here's the next one.
- 2:41:38Ground ball foul.
- 2:41:39That's strike two.
- 2:41:40Goes down into the giant bullpen.
- 2:41:43Two strikes to count.
- 2:41:44That pitch was in on him, a slider.
- 2:41:46White hit it on the fifth foul.
- 2:41:48Stan will be next.
- 2:41:50That base hit by Avier on the bunk was the 12th Cardinal hit.
- 2:41:53They had 18 hits last night against Cincinnati.
- 2:41:56And the Cardinals might have started the Reds
- 2:41:58in a bit of a tailspin
- 2:42:00because Philadelphia leads the Reds now 9-3
- 2:42:02in the eighth inning in their ballgame tonight.
- 2:42:06Larson has White set up.
- 2:42:08No balls, two strikes, and pitches outside, ball one.
- 2:42:13It's a 2-1 ballgame with the Dodgers leading Houston
- 2:42:16in the sixth inning.
- 2:42:18Philadelphia leads the Reds 9-3 in the eighth inning.
- 2:42:21Pittsburgh and Milwaukee rained out,
- 2:42:23and the Mets and the Cubs put it all ahead.
- 2:42:26The Yankees won tonight 1-0 over Baltimore.
- 2:42:31Detroit won the first game from Washington,
- 2:42:33and they're scoreless in the sixth inning of the second game.
- 2:42:35Cleveland and Boston are in extra innings now.
- 2:42:38And Minnesota leads Chicago in the ninth inning 2-1.
- 2:42:43Out on the coast, the Angels lead Kansas City 1-0 in the third.
- 2:42:46That's the other baseball.
- 2:42:48Here, Flood and Javier lead away.
- 2:42:50Here's the 1-2 pitch on the way to Bill White,
- 2:42:53and he hits one up the middle to the shortstop.
- 2:42:56Past the shortstop, a base hit, and the run's gonna score.
- 2:42:58Javier goes to third base, makes a turn, but stops there.
- 2:43:02A base hit by Bill White is third of the night
- 2:43:05off the leg of Larson, just past the shortstop take on,
- 2:43:09where Bill's third run batted into the night
- 2:43:11as Flood scored and Javier raised to third.
- 2:43:14There's a big run to pick up, and the Cardinals now lead 7-4,
- 2:43:17and a big chance for Moore.
- 2:43:19Still nobody out.
- 2:43:24A base hit by White is third of the night.
- 2:43:27That ball just did get past take on,
- 2:43:29and it might well have been a double play ball,
- 2:43:31and he's been able to flag it down.
- 2:43:35It got on through. Flood scored, Javier raised to third.
- 2:43:39Muzeel up, infield halfway in, either for the play at the plate
- 2:43:43or for the double play by way of second.
- 2:43:45Stan is one for four on the night.
- 2:43:47Now the infield comes all the way in.
- 2:43:51Infield playing in tight.
- 2:43:53Davenport pick on, Hiller and McCovey.
- 2:43:55McCovey holding White close.
- 2:43:56A lot of room through the right side of the infield.
- 2:43:58If Muzeel can pull it, outfield deep to the right.
- 2:44:02Two on and nobody out.
- 2:44:04Muzeel takes a strike, a good pitch on the outside corner.
- 2:44:06Funny on it, served up there by Larson.
- 2:44:09One run home.
- 2:44:10That was the 13th hit for the Cardinals tonight.
- 2:44:13The Cardinals now lead seven to four here in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:44:20Javier and White, two good baserunners on, third and first.
- 2:44:26They lead away.
- 2:44:29Larson to Muzeel.
- 2:44:31Base hit in the left.
- 2:44:33Another run scores on a single to the left by Muzeel,
- 2:44:36and it's eight to four.
- 2:44:39Stan's second hit on the Cardinals, 14th.
- 2:44:43Still nobody out.
- 2:44:45A hit batsman started it, then Javier singled with a bunt.
- 2:44:49White singled.
- 2:44:50Muzeel singled to drive in Javier.
- 2:44:54Stan's first run batted into the night.
- 2:44:56White stopped at second and here's Boyer.
- 2:44:59Muzeel lifted for a pitch runner, Bobby Jean Smith.
- 2:45:02Right back to the field, Bobby Jean Smith.
- 2:45:08This making runs as easy when your big hitters are hitting.
- 2:45:12Harry is still one of the prettiest sites in baseball.
- 2:45:14To see Muzeel stroke that ball into that opposite field.
- 2:45:18Well, that's when he's really hitting, when he can line that ball the other way.
- 2:45:24Stan ends with two for five for the night.
- 2:45:26Boyer up there, nobody out, and two on.
- 2:45:29And he hits a ground ball, double play ball.
- 2:45:31Hiller has it, gives the second one out, throw to first, double play.
- 2:45:34Boyer hits into a double play.
- 2:45:36Hiller to begone, to subeta.
- 2:45:38White goes to third.
- 2:45:40Bobby Jean Smith running for Muzeel is forced at second.
- 2:45:44And Boyer doubled up at first, and that will put it up to Carl Sawotsky here.
- 2:45:49Two runs home and the Cardinals lead eight to four.
- 2:45:51And you still can't get enough against this ball club.
- 2:46:00Carl Sawotsky comes up, he has one for four.
- 2:46:04And the ball club has been on base three times but has no hits for the night.
- 2:46:07Javier two for four, White three out of five, Muzeel two out of five,
- 2:46:11Boyer two out of five, Sawotsky one for four, Gautier two for four,
- 2:46:16Clemens one out of two, and Gibson had a hit.
- 2:46:21Base hits all over the place here tonight.
- 2:46:23White on at third, two out, and the pitch to Sawotsky is a strike.
- 2:46:26The double hitter caught the outside corner.
- 2:46:35Eight-four Cardinals, first game of the series.
- 2:46:37Coming out tomorrow, game time is 1-30, Sedecky against Sanford.
- 2:46:42Then a big double hitter Sunday at one o'clock.
- 2:46:50Larson checks the runner at third and now pitches to Sawotsky.
- 2:46:53A fly ball to very deep center field, going to be caught by Mays in front of the wall, and he has it.
- 2:46:59Sawotsky flies to center, and the rally died in a hurry but produced two runs.
- 2:47:05On three hits, no errors, one left.
- 2:47:10At the end of eight innings, Cardinals eight, Giants four.
- 2:47:16Well, the stage is set for the ninth inning here, and Lenny McDaniel is in the ball game,
- 2:47:21trying to preserve the win for Bob Gibson, who will become the first seven-game winner of the Cardinals.
- 2:47:27If McDaniel falters, Ed Bauda will be the pitcher. He's getting ready down in the bullfath.
- 2:47:32McDaniel ready to pitch the top of the ninth.
- 2:47:34The Cardinals about hit the Giants 14-9 and lead the Giants 8-4 here in the first game of the series.
- 2:47:39Bobby Gene Smith has replaced Museal in left field. That's the only change.
- 2:47:44Sawotsky comes out to take the warm-up tosses of McDaniel. For the Giants, it's the last three in the batting order,
- 2:47:52starting with Pagan, then the catcher, Holler, and then likely a pinch hitter.
- 2:47:57Here to tell you what happens in the top of the ninth, tell you if the Cardinals win it, go behind, or are tied, is Harry Carrick.
- 2:48:04Okay, Jack, these are the three men we want to get in a row here so that we don't have to worry about the top of the batting order.
- 2:48:13The Dodgers have run into trouble in the sixth at Houston. They were leading 2-1, but they've changed pitchers.
- 2:48:20Phillies are winning easily.
- 2:48:23Everybody expected that Copax, because of the poor lights in Houston, to have a picnic down there, but he's had nothing but trouble.
- 2:48:30That cold ball club really battled you.
- 2:48:33Here's Pagan. He's had nothing out of three. First pitch by Lindy. A bouncing ball foul off to the left. Strike one.
- 2:48:41Whitey Lockman goes over. The ball rolls by him, and Red Cheney's recovers it. One strike and no ball.
- 2:48:54Lindy McDaniel. Lindy the saver today. Here's a pitch. A slow tap. Lindy off the mound has it. Fires the first base in time.
- 2:49:07McDaniel throws out Pagan. That's six men in a row that McDaniel has retired without anybody hitting the ball out of the infield.
- 2:49:17Three of them he's retired himself on strikes. A fourth he threw out at first base.
- 2:49:23Here now is Tom Holler. Nothing out of two. Left-hand batter hitting 2-47. He's had five homers and 12 RBFs.
- 2:49:33The pitch on the way. Strike. A good fastball at the knee. One strike and no ball. One out.
- 2:49:46Tomorrow afternoon will be Ray Sedecky for the Cardinals and Jack Sanford for the Giants.
- 2:49:51Now the pitch on the way. A bouncing ball. White's got it. Lindy covers. White takes the play alone on assist.
- 2:50:01Holler goes out wide on assist. And now Ed Bailey from my favorite town, Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, will bring the pitch up.
- 2:50:14He's hitting for Don Larson. Larson a very good-hitting pitcher.
- 2:50:19Bailey hitting 2-38 for the year with eight homers and 22 runs battered in. Two men are out. Nobody on base.
- 2:50:31Nobody's hit the ball out of the infield against Lindy. There's the windup. The pitch is on the way.
- 2:50:39He didn't mean to swing. The ball hit the bat and went foul. Strike one.
- 2:50:45Cardinals shooting for their fourth in a row.
- 2:50:51There'll be seven out on the lost side if they win this one.
- 2:50:56Could pick up a full game on both the Giants and the Dodgers and Cincinnati. One strike, no ball.
- 2:51:05Now the wind and the pitch. It's a little bit low and that evens it up. One ball, one strike.
- 2:51:14It's eight to four. The Cardinals lead.
- 2:51:19Now the wind, the 1-1 pitch. He foul-chips strike two. Two strikes and a ball. Redbirds one.
- 2:51:28Last night, eight to two. Leading tonight, eight to four. One four to three the night before that.
- 2:51:35Ten to nine in extra innings the night before that. Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:51:41Here's the pitch on the way. He almost went around.
- 2:51:47The far ball went low and Bailey, who had started the swing, held up in time.
- 2:51:53So the Giants are still alive. Two balls, two strikes. Two men out and nobody on.
- 2:52:01McDaniel is retired. Seven men in a row.
- 2:52:08Bill White, the hitting star. Now to wind up, the 2-2 pitch.
- 2:52:14High and inside. And Kenny Boyer, the biggest puncher of the ball game, a three-run homer,
- 2:52:20who gave us the lead in the fifth that we've never relinquished.
- 2:52:24Now it's three and two on Bailey. Two out.
- 2:52:28Left-hand batter waits. Here's the pitch. There's the ground ball. Javier's got it.
- 2:52:35Here's the throw to White. The Cardinals win. Eight to four.
- 2:52:39They're fourth in a row. McDaniel, retired. Eight men in a row without allowing anybody
- 2:52:45to hit the ball out of the infield. That's what you call a real job in relief.
- 2:52:50Well, we got timely hitting, especially from Bill White, Kenny Boyer, Stan Musial.
- 2:52:57Fine pitching. Good relief job. A great relief job. A perfect relief job.
- 2:53:03And that, Jack, in a nutshell, is the story of the Cardinals' eighth, the Giants' fourth.
- 2:53:10Right. Combined with everything else, blood on base three times, although he had no hits.
- 2:53:15He walked once and was hit by a pitch twice. Javier had a couple of hits, including a key hit
- 2:53:19in the fifth inning when the Redbirds scored four. White, Musial, Boyer hits.
- 2:53:24Sawotsky had only one tonight, but they didn't need him. Kotei continued to hit two hits tonight.
- 2:53:29And Bob Gibson contributed a big base hit as he won his ball game, if you have to go to Lindy.
- 2:53:34He makes you go to the record book when he was 12-4 in 1960. And this is the way he looked then.
- 2:53:40During his 65 games with an earned run average of 2.09, striking out 105 and walking 24.
- 2:53:46That's the way he pitched this evening. And the Giants, as it turned out, didn't have a prayer against them.
- 2:53:52You get into a slugfest with these fellows, and you've got your hands full.
- 2:53:55The McDaniel would have none of it. And he really shut the door on him and won the game for Bob Gibson.
- 2:54:02You know, Kurt Simmons and Bob Gibson had been having a little bit of trouble getting past six.
- 2:54:09Each had had a couple of tries at it. So now we finally have a picture with seven victories, and it's Bob Gibson.
- 2:54:16There are the totals. Eight runs, 14 hits. No errors. Gibson the winner now, seven and four.
- 2:54:24And for the Giants, four runs, nine hits, no errors. Juan Marichal the loser.
- 2:54:30The first time the Cardinals have been able to beat him this year, and he's now eight and four.
- 2:54:35Time of the ball game, two hours and 48 minutes. They're covering the infield now.
- 2:54:40We'll be right back at them tomorrow as the Cardinals send Ray Sadecki against Jack Sanford.
- 2:54:48And it'll be very interesting to see how Sadecki bounces back after his little difficulty.
- 2:54:54Boy, it'd be great to see the youngster hop up with a shutout.
- 2:54:58Certainly would. And I'd like to point out that despite the fact there were 12 runs and 23 hits in the game,
- 2:55:03there were no errors. And we saw a lot of good baseball here tonight.
- 2:55:06The folks can look forward to more of the same tomorrow and then the big Sunday doubleheader.
- 2:55:10And reserve seats are still available for both days. Tomorrow, you know, it's a 1.30 ladies' day game.
- 2:55:16We'll be with you with the Dugout Show at 1.15, baseball time at 1.25.
