- 0:00Speaker 1: The 1110 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief Husker Buzz Edition.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Sean Callahan made it back from East Lansing. It wasn't
- 0:09Speaker 1: the easiest thing in the world. You, like a lot
- 0:11Speaker 1: of people, I saw this on Facebook, were trying to
- 0:14Speaker 1: either come back from Chicago or fly in or have
- 0:18Speaker 1: a flight connecting at O'Hare, and you all got held
- 0:23Speaker 1: up a little bit because Air Force One came through
- 0:25Speaker 1: there for the golf tournament in Chicago.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah, luckily we had a long way over built that
- 0:31Speaker 2: was going to be in O'Hare, and we just ended
- 0:33Speaker 2: up spending most of it in Detroit. So we were
- 0:35Speaker 2: about an hour late getting home. But O'Hare Airport, around
- 0:39Speaker 2: 5 o'clock or around that time in the middle of
- 0:42Speaker 2: the day yesterday, was not a pretty place to be.
- 0:46Speaker 2: A lot of stranded travelers as Air Force One sat
- 0:49Speaker 2: on the main runway of O'Hare Airport.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Brant Snedeker is the captain of the U.S. President's Cup
- 0:54Speaker 1: team that came from behind to beat the international team
- 0:57Speaker 1: in the singles matches yesterday. And Trump was out there
- 0:59Speaker 1: and he said, well, President Trump said he was going
- 1:02Speaker 1: to come here and provide us the spark we needed
- 1:04Speaker 1: to win. And so I got to give him credit
- 1:05Speaker 1: for helping the guys win. And I just thought, ooh,
- 1:08Speaker 1: Brant Snedeker just got canceled. But no matter that, Sean Callahan,
- 1:13Speaker 1: let's talk football. You made it out to East Lansing.
- 1:16Speaker 1: The Huskers, who previously... In these games where we should win,
- 1:20Speaker 1: on paper we should win, we have a lead in
- 1:23Speaker 1: the fourth quarter and then we find a way to lose.
- 1:26Speaker 1: That script has been ripped up and thrown away to
- 1:29Speaker 1: this point. What did you like about the Huskers' performance
- 1:32Speaker 1: against Michigan State on Saturday?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah, these were the type of games that we've seen
- 1:37Speaker 2: Nebraska struggle to win in recent years. I mean, they
- 1:40Speaker 2: haven't won in East Lansing since 2012, kind of for
- 1:44Speaker 2: full context. But what I liked, number one, was the
- 1:48Speaker 2: way the defense just rose up when they needed to.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I mean, they had the six sacks coming off a
- 1:54Speaker 2: week where they had five against North Dakota, so 11
- 1:57Speaker 2: sacks now, two games, but they forced three turnovers, and
- 2:01Speaker 2: they made the plays. Michigan State got desperate to the
- 2:05Speaker 2: point where they were running up-tempo, and they never have
- 2:07Speaker 2: done that before because they didn't have an answer early
- 2:10Speaker 2: in the game, and they threw a wrinkle just to
- 2:13Speaker 2: try to do something, and it worked for getting the
- 2:15Speaker 2: ball to the 20-yard line. But once you got in
- 2:18Speaker 2: the red zone, I loved how Nebraska's defense rose up.
- 2:20Speaker 2: We saw Andrew Marshall get an interception in the red zone.
- 2:24Speaker 2: We saw Donovan Jones force that fumble, and we saw
- 2:27Speaker 2: Owen Chambliss get the pick, along with just some of
- 2:29Speaker 2: the different pressure looks. But offensively, they weren't at their
- 2:33Speaker 2: best because Jamal Rule left the game early. Ja'Cory Barney
- 2:37Speaker 2: was out of the game early as well. And both
- 2:40Speaker 2: guys they think will be okay moving forward. But they
- 2:43Speaker 2: were down a couple of their big pieces early, And
- 2:47Speaker 2: Anthony Calandria was able to kind of gut that thing.
- 2:49Speaker 2: And we saw Vince Genitone, a walk-on from North Platte,
- 2:53Speaker 2: who had been playing scout team and moved over. And
- 2:57Speaker 2: he's their backup short yardage running back for Jamal Rule.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Scored two touchdowns in that game. Amazing effort by Vince
- 3:05Speaker 2: Genitone stepping up in that moment.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And Coach Rule gave him the game ball, didn't he?
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, he was given the game ball in the locker
- 3:13Speaker 2: room and He's one of the best athletes on the team.
- 3:16Speaker 2: This is not like a Rudy story, as Matt Rule
- 3:18Speaker 2: said after the game. He runs 10-5 in the 100,
- 3:21Speaker 2: has the longest broad jump at over 11 feet, a
- 3:24Speaker 2: 40-plus inch vertical. He was a two-time state wrestling champion
- 3:29Speaker 2: in Class A, a 10-500 meter guy. Phenomenal athlete that
- 3:35Speaker 2: just kind of had to wait his time. This is
- 3:38Speaker 2: the political system of being a walk-on. He's played special
- 3:41Speaker 2: teams before. But all the metrics say he's a good
- 3:44Speaker 2: football player. He just never got his chance to be
- 3:46Speaker 2: a football player until Saturday at East Lansing.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know what? I like Makai Nelson. I
- 3:51Speaker 1: really think he's a good running back. And I know
- 3:55Speaker 1: that's going way out on a limb. The guy just
- 3:58Speaker 1: runs over people.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Yeah, he finished with 60 yards. Calandria led the Huskers
- 4:04Speaker 2: with 66 yards. Most of those rushing yards for Calandra
- 4:08Speaker 2: came on scramble plays, where the pass play broke down.
- 4:11Speaker 2: That's what they didn't have last year. The play broke down.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Dylan Raiola just was not capable of being a runner.
- 4:18Speaker 2: We know Dylan Raiola is a good quarterback, too. I mean,
- 4:21Speaker 2: look what he did this weekend for Oregon, coming off
- 4:24Speaker 2: the bench for Dante Moore. But Nebraska needs the mobility
- 4:28Speaker 2: factor just to complete their offense, and we saw that
- 4:31Speaker 2: with Calandria. Especially when Jamal Rule went down, they needed
- 4:35Speaker 2: another guy to step up. He was able to do that.
- 4:40Speaker 2: That final drive as well ate up a lot of clock.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It was the knockout blow to Michigan State. That place
- 4:47Speaker 2: is empty. By the second half, their students cleared out
- 4:50Speaker 2: of there.
- 4:51Speaker 1: It was embarrassing. I felt bad for him. Jamal Rule, ankle.
- 4:57Speaker 1: tweak Ja'Cory Barney, what's going on with him, and are
- 4:59Speaker 1: these guys going to be gutting it out and risking
- 5:02Speaker 1: further injury against Maryland? Is it better maybe to hold
- 5:05Speaker 1: them out and wait for Indiana? What do you think?
- 5:07Speaker 2: No, yeah, I don't know the specific injury on Ja'Cory Barney,
- 5:12Speaker 2: but I was told last night that they just needed
- 5:15Speaker 2: to get back here and get treatment in the facility,
- 5:19Speaker 2: and The good news is Nebraska's home the next two weeks,
- 5:22Speaker 2: so they're going to be around all their medical resources
- 5:25Speaker 2: and all the things they need to get right. I
- 5:29Speaker 2: would be stunned if it's long-term. Maybe one of the
- 5:32Speaker 2: guys misses this week. We'll see. Maryland kind of comes
- 5:35Speaker 2: in as a mess right now. They lost 54-3 to UCLA.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Mike Lockley is still employed, which I'd say that's probably
- 5:44Speaker 2: a good thing. You don't want to have an interim
- 5:45Speaker 2: coach randomly be coming in and you're not really prepared
- 5:49Speaker 2: for what he's going to do. So Mike Loxley will
- 5:52Speaker 2: come in with a very hot seat to Lincoln. All right.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Sean, thank you so much. We'll talk again tomorrow. Have
- 5:57Speaker 1: a great day.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Thanks, Scott.
