- 0:01Hey. Everybody, welcome to the Good
- 0:03Morning from the Chicken Coop podcast.
- 0:05My name is Kim Johnson and I am a mastermindset, coach, creative
- 0:08strategist, and also happened to be a farmer.
- 0:11This is my Chicken coop and I come out here.
- 0:13Every day to record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions, possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking, and just bring some joy into the world.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way, hey? Everybody good.
- 0:30Morning from the. Chicken coop.
- 0:31Well, this is good afternoon. I'm actually recording this on
- 0:35Friday to put up for Saturday because tomorrow morning I think
- 0:39it's going to be a weird morning because I'm going to be staying
- 0:42up late working on seed choices and laying out some garden stuff
- 0:47that I want to get done. So I decided to come out here
- 0:50now and record it and I'm sitting here with Mr. Buford and
- 0:53Miss Lucy and all the chickens while they are having a snack
- 0:56and they're just like walking around and chilling out
- 0:59neighbors, mowing the lawn and on the next farm.
- 1:02So you can maybe hear that off in the distance.
- 1:04And you know, the fun part for me about setting out what do I
- 1:08want to plant for next year is very much like goal setting.
- 1:13I want to know what am I going to do with all of these things
- 1:16now? I used to just buy seeds because
- 1:18I wanted to grow anything and I really didn't care what I was
- 1:21growing. But I'm becoming very pragmatic
- 1:24with what's the outcome of what I'm growing and am I going to be
- 1:29willing to actually work with it?
- 1:31So we're going to back up. I planted some things this year
- 1:35and while they did OK, these garden huckleberries, let's face
- 1:41it, that's what I'm talking about.
- 1:42The garden huckleberries. They scared the hell out of me.
- 1:45If you didn't let them ripen, you could get sick from them.
- 1:48So then I panicked because my certainty girl got in the way
- 1:51and I was like, OK, well, what is ripe?
- 1:53They said when they're not glossy, they're safe to eat.
- 1:57And I'm thinking to myself, oh God, I, I, I can't just make
- 2:00this decision. How do you know they still
- 2:02looked glossy? I mean, granted, they were less
- 2:04glossy, but they were glossy. So I kept waiting and waiting.
- 2:07And then it got so hot. And then I was like, OK.
- 2:10And then they weren't easy to pull.
- 2:11So in the, in the world of plants, like if you're going to
- 2:14harvest something, usually when it's easy to pull in a Berry
- 2:17world, it means it's ready. If it's hard to pull, it's not
- 2:21ready. So I kept letting it sit there,
- 2:23and then they rotted and even the chickens won't eat them.
- 2:27So when the chickens won't eat something, to me that's a sign
- 2:30like, don't plant that again. So here I am sitting here going,
- 2:33OK, this year in my very pragmatic state, I'm going to
- 2:37work on saying, what's the outcome with all of this?
- 2:40Like, what do I want to create with all of this?
- 2:43And I've always had this dream of having herbs drying from the
- 2:47ceiling. So then I could, you know, put
- 2:49them in jars and do all this great stuff with them and make
- 2:52it again, something very pretty, but I've never done it.
- 2:56And so I was like, oh, I really want to work on an herb garden.
- 2:59That's an outcome I've said before, but it was more just for
- 3:03oh, we need to have a few things.
- 3:04But now I'm like, OK, I want a full blown like badass old
- 3:09fashioned English herb garden and I'm going to throw
- 3:12everything at it to do it. I'm also expanding the flowers
- 3:16because this year I felt like I had so many pollinators.
- 3:20I really didn't want to cut anything.
- 3:23And again, even though it was in the fence that it was supposed
- 3:25to be the designated spot for it to go, I still didn't want to
- 3:29cut anything because I didn't want to rob anybody of its of
- 3:32the opportunity of pollinating. So I was like, all right, I'm
- 3:35not going to cut it, which means I have to have bigger flower
- 3:38gardens. Then I'm like, OK, well, now I
- 3:40really want to have this walkway from the house into my recording
- 3:46studio. And it's always like dark and
- 3:49I'm always tripping and it's, it's not good.
- 3:52So I'm going to OK, let me figure out how to do this, light
- 3:55it up. Let me figure out these little
- 3:56things. So I'm working backwards from
- 4:00taking the problems and saying, OK, this is what I want from to
- 4:04fix the problem or this is what I want as an outcome.
- 4:06And then I'm thinking about that and planning it.
- 4:08Every single vegetable will have a plan.
- 4:10Every single vegetable will be checked.
- 4:13And I'm so excited about that detail work because I'm a
- 4:18complete nerd and a certainty driven freak.
- 4:20And this is one of the things that excites me.
- 4:22So as I sit here tonight, families headed out to go and go
- 4:28to some scary haunted house, which I would never entertain in
- 4:30a million years. Done them before it.
- 4:32Absolutely hate them on every level.
- 4:35I will be doing this and I will be over the moon enjoying it.
- 4:39And I will know that this was not haphazard.
- 4:42I didn't just get a bunch of catalogs.
- 4:44Which is what will happen in the next month.
- 4:46I will be inundated in my mailbox with catalogs and as
- 4:49soon as they get in there and then the mail, the emails start
- 4:52showing up with all the seeds that are available.
- 4:54I lose my mind. So I just have to have them all.
- 4:58I have no sensibility. It's like sending me into an
- 5:01animal shelter and before you know what, I'm coming home with
- 5:03something I didn't even intend to have chickens.
- 5:06This happens every time I go to Tractor Supply, end up with more
- 5:09chickens. So I'm trying to be very, very
- 5:12thoughtful. I've put my certainty girl in
- 5:14charge. I'm giving her all the the reins
- 5:18to check everything and double check it and triple check it and
- 5:21it feels great. So the next couple days really
- 5:25start thinking about doing the same thing with what you may
- 5:28want to incorporate and see how it plays out for you because I
- 5:32know I'm going to be working on mine tonight.
- 5:34All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:37will see you tomorrow. Bye.
