- 0:03Speaker 1: If I passed the hour eight in the Eastern time zone,
- 0:07Speaker 1: seven in the Central. No matter where you are listening
- 0:09Speaker 1: to us, no matter how you are listening to us,
- 0:12Speaker 1: whether it is terrestrial radio or iHeartRadio, thank you. We
- 0:16Speaker 1: appreciate you sharing time with us. We really do. We
- 0:19Speaker 1: value that and we want to put it to use.
- 0:21Speaker 1: And so we are joined by J. D. Johnson, co
- 0:25Speaker 1: founder Talent Training Group, co host Talent Outdoors, any other
- 0:31Speaker 1: talent things that we're branding here. Have you heard the
- 0:34Speaker 1: story when my wife and I went up through I
- 0:36Speaker 1: want to say it was Kentucky where we ran across
- 0:40Speaker 1: signs for the Talent Winery and I looked at her.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I said, Charlie and Jady, you're getting ambitious.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Long is this scupping on one? And you know, I
- 0:50Speaker 2: mean I know a little bit about that.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Oh and talent Adventures or what is it that you
- 0:57Speaker 1: guys are doing your trips?
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess yeah.
- 1:00Speaker 1: You're anyway, good to see you.
- 1:01Speaker 2: How are you? I'm doing great? How about you?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Good? We are starting in New York City and just
- 1:07Speaker 1: as just fate would have had would have it where
- 1:10Speaker 1: that shooting took place in downtown Manhattan, you were there
- 1:13Speaker 1: a week before.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yep, sure was well right by that building. Remember looking
- 1:16Speaker 2: at the signs and going, Wow, the building's got a
- 1:19Speaker 2: lot of different, big, big entities in it.
- 1:21Speaker 1: When you started to hear the specifics, and as you know,
- 1:25Speaker 1: we leave names out. We don't want to give any
- 1:27Speaker 1: credibility or honor to the shooting, to shooters in these
- 1:30Speaker 1: types of ridiculous crimes. When you recognized that, oh, this
- 1:36Speaker 1: was a shooting in Manhattan, I was there, does it
- 1:39Speaker 1: bring a little more context to you?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, yeah?
- 1:42Speaker 1: What what immediately starts running through your mind.
- 1:48Speaker 2: The fact that nobody engaged him walking down the sidewalk
- 1:52Speaker 2: with an ar or with a rifle. Uh. You know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: that's just if you've never been there. I mean, there's
- 2:00Speaker 2: everybody walks in those areas because everything is so compact
- 2:05Speaker 2: and cluster together, and you you know, you walk down
- 2:07Speaker 2: the street and you look up and you can't see
- 2:09Speaker 2: the top. You know, it's like being in the redwood
- 2:12Speaker 2: forest and it's akuoia trees. I mean, it's just just
- 2:14Speaker 2: but everybody walks. It's Uh, there was one day we
- 2:18Speaker 2: were up there and we like my watch said the
- 2:20Speaker 2: twenty five thousand steps that day. You know, just trying
- 2:23Speaker 2: to see things. But and there's law enforcement everywhere milling around,
- 2:28Speaker 2: walking the street, standing on the corners. So I was
- 2:32Speaker 2: I was very shocked that he actually got into the
- 2:35Speaker 2: building with the with a very openly carried rifle. That
- 2:40Speaker 2: was That was the first thing, you know. And there's
- 2:45Speaker 2: a lot of building security up there as far as
- 2:48Speaker 2: having people posted places, you see a lot of.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Are security guards allowed to be armed in New York City?
- 2:55Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I didn't see a lot of private security armed private security.
- 2:59Speaker 2: It's a lot of privates security, like if you go
- 3:01Speaker 2: to any of the we we went to a Target
- 3:04Speaker 2: store that was a Target that was right down the
- 3:07Speaker 2: street from where we were staying, to grab some drinks
- 3:09Speaker 2: and stuff for the refrigerator in the room. And they
- 3:13Speaker 2: had somebody standing at the door I'm assuming for you know,
- 3:15Speaker 2: for shoplifting, But they weren't armed. But you see a
- 3:18Speaker 2: lot of a lot of law enforcement just kind of
- 3:21Speaker 2: hanging around, so I'm assuming that they're not posted there.
- 3:23Speaker 2: They're probably working off duty or whatever.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And obviously we have to make a few assumptions in
- 3:29Speaker 1: talking about this, but but there was an armed security
- 3:32Speaker 1: guard inside. He was an off duty New York City
- 3:35Speaker 1: police officer right, and he got somehow someone got the
- 3:39Speaker 1: jump on him.
- 3:40Speaker 2: He was shot in the back too, so you know
- 3:43Speaker 2: from what I understand that So he may have never
- 3:47Speaker 2: seen he may have never seen the threat period. He
- 3:50Speaker 2: may have been you know.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Distracted looking or yeah, just facing the wrong way, might
- 3:55Speaker 1: have been looking at his phone for all we.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Know, who knowsh.
- 3:59Speaker 1: What do you think are the takeaways from a story
- 4:03Speaker 1: like that as it relates to people listening right now
- 4:05Speaker 1: that own a business, You need to.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Have some kind of security measures in place, depending on
- 4:11Speaker 2: what you know what your business is hard to do
- 4:13Speaker 2: that in a retail setting, but if you're not in
- 4:15Speaker 2: a retail setting, or you're not in a setting where
- 4:18Speaker 2: you get visitors on a regular basis, and even if
- 4:22Speaker 2: you do, you may want to have a buzz in
- 4:25Speaker 2: system or somebody at least somebody there at the front
- 4:27Speaker 2: door that can defend the facility if necessary.
- 4:33Speaker 1: That conversation needs to be had by every business regardless,
- 4:38Speaker 1: because as we talked about when we discussed this story,
- 4:41Speaker 1: nobody went to work that day in that office building
- 4:45Speaker 1: expecting that to happen.
- 4:46Speaker 2: But you could tell they had had some training. The
- 4:48Speaker 2: barricading some of them. You know, they barricaded the doors
- 4:52Speaker 2: very well. It probably would have been a much higher
- 4:56Speaker 2: loss of life had they not been somewhat prepared, somebody
- 5:00Speaker 2: at least showing them a video.
- 5:01Speaker 1: And therein is sort of the backhanded way of reinforcing
- 5:05Speaker 1: what we've been saying for years. Absolutely, have a plan,
- 5:08Speaker 1: have a plan.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Some kind of plans better than no plan.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So if you're a business owner, your manager, maybe have
- 5:13Speaker 1: a meeting, maybe talk about it among your leadership team.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And if you're an employee, maybe suggest one. Yeah, the
- 5:21Speaker 1: headline in a Fox News story a few days after
- 5:24Speaker 1: the shooting in New York City NYC office shooting raises
- 5:29Speaker 1: new corporate security concerns for business leaders, you mentioned that
- 5:35Speaker 1: the calls went up after this attack.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yes, sir, we do. We do security surveys, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 2: go out and talk to businesses, companies, whatever entities. We
- 5:47Speaker 2: do a lot of that and as a company, we
- 5:50Speaker 2: do that, and yeah, we started getting calls.
- 5:53Speaker 1: No one plan can be applied to all businesses for
- 5:56Speaker 1: the most part, unless you're looking at a chain where
- 5:58Speaker 1: they designed the buildings exact same way type thing. But
- 6:02Speaker 1: I've got to believe JD. There are common components to
- 6:06Speaker 1: those plans. Sure, what generally is when you do a
- 6:11Speaker 1: you're looking at a place and then you're sitting down
- 6:13Speaker 1: and you're coming up with what you think your recommendations
- 6:16Speaker 1: are going to be. Are there some common themes in
- 6:19Speaker 1: those recommendations.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, you you know, the first one is the actual
- 6:24Speaker 2: physical barricade security of the building. And you know, no
- 6:29Speaker 2: easy access doors that nobody's watching. The last thing you
- 6:33Speaker 2: want is for somebody to get in that you don't
- 6:35Speaker 2: even know they're in the building to do something bad.
- 6:38Speaker 2: So you would be surprised that. I mean, there's people
- 6:42Speaker 2: that have, Uh it's something as simple as let's say
- 6:44Speaker 2: you've got magnetic door locks, kind of like you guys
- 6:46Speaker 2: here have here at the studio. You got doors that
- 6:48Speaker 2: will secure without physically turning a dead bolt or whatever.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Doors just some of them are just physical maintenance problems.
- 6:58Speaker 2: The door doesn't close all the way, you know.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Fix it, fix the door.
- 7:02Speaker 2: It is not you know, get the door fix. You
- 7:06Speaker 2: run a multi million dollar facilities sometimes and the door
- 7:11Speaker 2: doesn't close all the way. You know, that's a simple fix.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Put a new hydraulic door closer on it. You know,
- 7:17Speaker 2: like you got here on your door there that that
- 7:19Speaker 2: hydraulic system that pulls the door shut. You know, fix it,
- 7:22Speaker 2: readjust it whatever it needs to be.
- 7:23Speaker 1: How many times do you see something where it's simply
- 7:27Speaker 1: people becoming comfortable and leaving a door unlicked because it's
- 7:31Speaker 1: just easier for everybody to come in and out.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Exactly. It's it's I hate to say it is. Sometimes
- 7:36Speaker 2: it's just laziness. It's just it's it's you know, And
- 7:40Speaker 2: like I said about New York, there there's such a
- 7:43Speaker 2: gun unfriendly city area. Nobody expects anybody to have guns there,
- 7:49Speaker 2: and especially in cause it's just no guns because because
- 7:52Speaker 2: the law there's the law on the book says no gun.
- 7:54Speaker 2: So everybody's gonna abide by that right, which is the
- 7:59Speaker 2: most ludicrous attitude you could possibly have. So I'm sure
- 8:03Speaker 2: that they there's probably a great deal of you know,
- 8:07Speaker 2: just complacency people there is. They don't expect people to
- 8:13Speaker 2: have a gun like we do here. You know, it's
- 8:15Speaker 2: it's it's common to carry a gun here, for people
- 8:18Speaker 2: to carry guns. There's a whole lot of people that
- 8:19Speaker 2: carry guns concealed here up there. That's not their culture.
- 8:23Speaker 1: You said something that I think is worth repeating, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: that is think like a bad guy.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's kind of what we have to do
- 8:30Speaker 2: when we when we go and look at facilities, or
- 8:34Speaker 2: we get asked to come to a security survey or
- 8:37Speaker 2: training or whatever else is. We have to go and
- 8:39Speaker 2: think like a bad guy. You know, what would be
- 8:41Speaker 2: the my most as a bad guy? What would be
- 8:46Speaker 2: my highest probability of success to carry out whatever heinous
- 8:50Speaker 2: act that I'm trying to do? You know, you have
- 8:52Speaker 2: to put yourself in that place and then and then
- 8:55Speaker 2: go about mentally, at least exercise what would I do.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I know that this is a topic that everybody's going
- 9:04Speaker 1: to handle this differently and even react to my mentioning
- 9:06Speaker 1: it an estranged husband, And I'm gonna just be sexist
- 9:11Speaker 1: here for a second, because oftentimes the perpetrators are males.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Absolutely in a broken relationship you're not going to be
- 9:17Speaker 1: with anybody else type thing, or in a strange boyfriend.
- 9:21Speaker 1: These are the types of things you kind of need
- 9:22Speaker 1: to make your supervisors aware of for the safety of
- 9:25Speaker 1: everybody in there. Hey, you're used to seeing Bruce come
- 9:28Speaker 1: to the office all the time. He's not welcome here anymore.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Makes somebody aware of it.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Absolutely. I mean that is that is probably the number
- 9:36Speaker 2: one attributor to this kind of this kind of behavior,
- 9:41Speaker 2: you know, a broken relationship, relationship, you know, just domestic
- 9:45Speaker 2: domestic issues, or somebody that you made really mad that
- 9:50Speaker 2: doesn't you know, you you may aggravate somebody to the
- 9:55Speaker 2: point where it flips a switch somewhere and there. I'm
- 9:58Speaker 2: gonna go down there and kill everybody in that building
- 10:00Speaker 2: because they wouldn't do this for me, right, whatever that is.
- 10:04Speaker 2: But you have to you can't think rationally about You
- 10:07Speaker 2: can't put yourself as a rational person. How would I
- 10:10Speaker 2: handle this offense to me? You got to think as
- 10:14Speaker 2: somebody that's off there, you know there.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Yeah, rational people have trouble thinking irrationally. Yeah, and they
- 10:20Speaker 1: and people that are irrational kind of count on that. Yep.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 10:23Speaker 1: We've got a lot more stories in the news and
- 10:25Speaker 1: we're going to talk about them.
- 10:26Speaker 2: J D.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Johnson with me from the Talent Training Group. Remember Talent
- 10:30Speaker 1: training all right, that's where you can get some classes.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You can learn how to better prepare for what may
- 10:36Speaker 1: come your way, protect yourself, your family. Go to talentrange
- 10:40Speaker 1: dot com. Back with JD. Johnson of the Talent training group.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Normally we end these segments with a training tip, but
- 10:45Speaker 1: there's just so many stories. I don't know that we'll
- 10:47Speaker 1: get to one. So I'll simply say call JD. Charlie
- 10:50Speaker 1: at Talent and set up and go to a class.
- 10:52Speaker 1: How about that? Does that work?
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Learn a bunch of stuff. Yeah, I was sharing with you.
- 11:01Speaker 1: This story was confounding to me. Guy named Lee Ogler,
- 11:05Speaker 1: young Man, thirty nine, Danville, Virginia, Danville City council member.
- 11:10Speaker 1: It's really irrelevant. A guy who had a grudge with
- 11:13Speaker 1: him showed up at his office where he worked with
- 11:16Speaker 1: a five gallon bucket of gasoline, poured it on him,
- 11:19Speaker 1: let him on fire. How do you stop that?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Not let him? Not let the guy get that close
- 11:25Speaker 2: to you with a bucket of anything.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Because and you know why I'm asking this. Is it
- 11:31Speaker 1: that simple?
- 11:33Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean so, here's the issue with a flammable
- 11:38Speaker 2: is that you've if you had a gun and all
- 11:40Speaker 2: of a sudden you covered in gas and now you
- 11:43Speaker 2: pull your trusty blaster out and set it off, You're
- 11:46Speaker 2: probably gonna be the one igniting the gas. But yeah,
- 11:49Speaker 2: if you see somebody that has told you or there's
- 11:54Speaker 2: a history, there's a history there, there was a history
- 11:56Speaker 2: there in this case, Yes, I'm not gonna let that
- 11:59Speaker 2: guy get close to me with much of anything in
- 12:01Speaker 2: his hand that I don't know exactly if I don't know,
- 12:03Speaker 2: unless it's a twinkie, you know something that I know
- 12:05Speaker 2: exactly what it is. So there's other things other than
- 12:10Speaker 2: flammables that you can there's other liquids that could have
- 12:13Speaker 2: been acid. It could have been a lot of things.
- 12:15Speaker 1: And we've seen attacks like that in various parts of
- 12:17Speaker 1: the World's happened here before. The throwing gas on somebody
- 12:21Speaker 1: has happened, happened here, happened in this country.
- 12:25Speaker 2: You just don't ever know what what a road, what
- 12:28Speaker 2: what crooked road? The crazy guy's brain's going to go down.
- 12:32Speaker 1: In a way. This again reinforces our constant theme of
- 12:36Speaker 1: situational awareness and that you just have to think differently.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Absolutely you do. And it's it's like I said, I
- 12:47Speaker 2: I don't know. If that guy's mad at me and
- 12:48Speaker 2: he walks in with a with a bucket in his hand,
- 12:51Speaker 2: if he ain't drinking out of it, then you're not
- 12:54Speaker 2: fixing to get close to me. If I know you
- 12:56Speaker 2: and I have an issue. So, like I said, I
- 13:00Speaker 2: think I could articulate at least the presentation of a
- 13:05Speaker 2: of of a firearm or a weapon or you know,
- 13:08Speaker 2: if not, if not the deadly force, I could articulate
- 13:11Speaker 2: that with the unknown of what's in there. But there
- 13:14Speaker 2: could be something bad. That's just like somebody pointing a gun.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Actually are a BB gun. You don't know if it's
- 13:18Speaker 2: loaded or if it's a deadly weapon whatever, but it
- 13:21Speaker 2: looks like it could be sure, So yeah, I think
- 13:25Speaker 2: you can easily articulate that.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I think it's it's it's also useful to remember that
- 13:33Speaker 1: these things are never appointments.
- 13:35Speaker 2: No, No, They happen when we're least least expecting it.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And that's that's part of the you know, that's part
- 13:42Speaker 2: of living in a state of awareness. When you're out
- 13:45Speaker 2: in public and not locked behind your door with the
- 13:47Speaker 2: alarm on, that's a that's a that's a being in public.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And I suppose a reminder that would be useful would
- 13:52Speaker 1: be taking inventory of your life. If you've got someone
- 13:54Speaker 1: that you know is an enemy, you need to be
- 13:57Speaker 1: mindful of that person and you surroundings.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Absolutely, and there's you know, I don't I don't know
- 14:04Speaker 2: that I have any, and I hope I never have.
- 14:05Speaker 2: I hope I never do have any. Sure, you you
- 14:09Speaker 2: know you live in the public public eye. Me too
- 14:13Speaker 2: to an extent, so you know you you don't ever
- 14:16Speaker 2: know who you really offended until sometimes it's too late, right, Uh.
- 14:21Speaker 2: So you live in that state of awareness where you're
- 14:23Speaker 2: always paying attention to anybody making eye contact with you
- 14:26Speaker 2: or approaching you in public or whatever. You need to
- 14:28Speaker 2: be attentive to that.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And we're back. I have to do it once. I
- 14:36Speaker 1: can't help myself. Jadi Johnson of the Talent Training Group
- 14:39Speaker 1: with us this morning our personal defense segment for the
- 14:42Speaker 1: month of August. Can you believe it?
- 14:45Speaker 2: Time flies when you're having fun?
- 14:46Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, gracious, finally a more well, at least
- 14:51Speaker 1: there is. There's a hero, yes, one of us. Yeah, right,
- 14:59Speaker 1: guys stabbing him. Bunch of people late twenties to senior adults,
- 15:04Speaker 1: and he stopped by a marine. I always get in
- 15:08Speaker 1: trouble when I say former marine because marines will write
- 15:10Speaker 1: me say.
- 15:10Speaker 2: You're retired or you're never retired, not active duty marine.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Right, I don't know what to say.
- 15:19Speaker 2: I'm sorry he didn't have the haircut. He's a not
- 15:21Speaker 2: active duty marine.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Boy, but did he have everything else?
- 15:25Speaker 2: Yes, sir, that was awesome.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Let's talk about the prevalence and the growing use of
- 15:31Speaker 1: a knife.
- 15:33Speaker 2: You know, it hadn't just started, we're but it is growing.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I mean, quite honestly, it's now the thing to use
- 15:40Speaker 1: in England because it has been. Yeah, that's the weapon
- 15:43Speaker 1: of choice now, but it is becoming more prevalent and
- 15:47Speaker 1: the dangers associated with it. I mean, we saw that
- 15:50Speaker 1: kid in a track meet stab a fellow competitor in
- 15:53Speaker 1: the chest and kill him for.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Much easier to conceal. It's much easier to conceal a
- 15:58Speaker 2: knife than it is a fararm, right, they're not. Some
- 16:02Speaker 2: people don't look at them as a weapon period, which they.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Very much are absolutely.
- 16:09Speaker 2: You know, in a phone booth, I'd probably rather have
- 16:10Speaker 2: a knife than a gun if I'm tied up in
- 16:12Speaker 2: a phone booth with somebody, if I had to defend myself,
- 16:14Speaker 2: because it doesn't run out of bullets and it doesn't jam,
- 16:18Speaker 2: and it is always going to work. If I had
- 16:20Speaker 2: to defend myself with a knife, that's a real personal
- 16:23Speaker 2: thing when you you but crazy people don't think the
- 16:27Speaker 2: way we do you know it's so you don't ever
- 16:31Speaker 2: know what's going through that guy's head. But yeah, you're
- 16:33Speaker 2: not unarmed if you have a knife and you're willing
- 16:37Speaker 2: to use it.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Distance is your friend if dealing with somebody with a knife.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Absolutely, absolutely, But you also have to understand that there
- 16:47Speaker 2: are some distances that can be just because of reaction time.
- 16:51Speaker 2: You know, you're talking about twenty feet. If they're within
- 16:55Speaker 2: twenty feet of you and you're just just say you're
- 16:57Speaker 2: carrying a firearm concealed and your adversary is armed with
- 17:03Speaker 2: a knife and they're less than twenty feet away, there's
- 17:06Speaker 2: a good probability you're gonna get cut before you can
- 17:08Speaker 2: get your gun out and engage him.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Yeah, talk about that distance closing thing.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so this reactionary gap is what I'm talking about.
- 17:17Speaker 2: It's gonna take you, probably from a concealed carry in
- 17:21Speaker 2: a holster you're looking at if you're really fast, a
- 17:26Speaker 2: second and a half to recognize the threat, engage, draw
- 17:32Speaker 2: your weapon, come up, get the weapon into a functional position.
- 17:37Speaker 2: It's gonna take you a second and a half two
- 17:39Speaker 2: seconds to make that happen, because it's gonna take you
- 17:42Speaker 2: three quarters of a second to recognize the threat, and
- 17:44Speaker 2: people don't account for that. So before you can draw
- 17:50Speaker 2: and shoot, somebody can very easily close a twenty foot gap.
- 17:54Speaker 2: You're talking for most people, four steps, you know, before
- 17:59Speaker 2: you're within arms reach of somebody, So you can close
- 18:01Speaker 2: that reactionary gap if you haven't trained to or haven't
- 18:07Speaker 2: prepared mentally to change direction or get off the tracks
- 18:11Speaker 2: as we call it. You know, a step to the left,
- 18:12Speaker 2: or a couple of steps to the left, moving to
- 18:14Speaker 2: the left, moving to the right, retreating, moving backwards when
- 18:18Speaker 2: somebody's aggressing you. So, and that's there's a drill out there.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I didn't know the name to it. It's called the
- 18:25Speaker 2: tool or drill where you practice moving and drawing.
- 18:29Speaker 1: But a lot of.
- 18:30Speaker 2: People don't practice that way, you know, they stand in
- 18:32Speaker 2: one place on a square range and shoot. Yeah, just
- 18:37Speaker 2: have a great stance. And you've heard me say on
- 18:39Speaker 2: this show, I'm pretty sure if your stance is really good,
- 18:42Speaker 2: your tactics are terrible. That's what I'm talking about. You know,
- 18:46Speaker 2: if you're you've got a great shooting stance, your tactics
- 18:48Speaker 2: are horrible because in real life, time doesn't freeze and
- 18:52Speaker 2: nothing stands it's not. It's not. It's never a static situation, right, So,
- 18:59Speaker 2: like I said, some body with a knife can do
- 19:01Speaker 2: you a whole bunch of damage and a really short
- 19:03Speaker 2: amount of time.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Guy stabbed eleven people before he was stopped, and there
- 19:07Speaker 1: was somebody there actually trying to get in the way
- 19:10Speaker 1: of the guy with the knife and the man trying
- 19:12Speaker 1: to stop. It all unbelievable the video.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Because you've got a pre you've got to prejudice against
- 19:17Speaker 2: the guy with the gun there, or you're you're assuming
- 19:20Speaker 2: that he's the bad guy because he has a gun.
- 19:22Speaker 2: And that's that's a that's a television and leftist behavior
- 19:27Speaker 2: and the only bad guys have guns. Things that we
- 19:30Speaker 2: get pounded into our head every day on the media
- 19:33Speaker 2: with the media.
- 19:33Speaker 1: The growing threat of knives just simply tells me once again,
- 19:38Speaker 1: be aware of your surroundings because you just don't know
- 19:41Speaker 1: who have exactly right. Forty one minutes after the hour,
- 19:49Speaker 1: you know, there was a time that I enjoyed the
- 19:53Speaker 1: idea of of going camping, and I will admit on
- 19:57Speaker 1: the front end, I don't I don't have enough faith
- 20:00Speaker 1: in the people that are around me and put myself
- 20:03Speaker 1: in a tent and not have my perimeter secured, if
- 20:07Speaker 1: that makes any sense at all. Sure, And and so
- 20:11Speaker 1: the story of the couple in Arkansas, we now know
- 20:15Speaker 1: that the Brinks, Clinton and Kristen were protecting their daughters
- 20:19Speaker 1: potentially from some encounter with with the guy who would
- 20:23Speaker 1: be their murderer. But I want to back up and
- 20:26Speaker 1: just talk about security for yourself and your family when
- 20:31Speaker 1: you're out camping or just in this case, yes, they
- 20:33Speaker 1: were camping, but this was just walking a trail.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Yeah, terrible. Well, there's a reason that even in Florida,
- 20:44Speaker 2: even where we're not an open carry state, there is
- 20:47Speaker 2: a there is a statute statute on the books in
- 20:50Speaker 2: Florida that if you were hunting, camping, fishing, hiking out
- 20:53Speaker 2: in the woods, you can openly carry. You don't have
- 20:56Speaker 2: to carry concealed. You can openly carry in those situations
- 21:00Speaker 2: because you're not just worried about and this crazy guy
- 21:03Speaker 2: being on the trail with you is just one of
- 21:06Speaker 2: many dangers you can that there are in Florida. You've
- 21:09Speaker 2: got you know, you've got bears, and you've got you've
- 21:12Speaker 2: got Florida black bears. They will eat you. Yes, they're
- 21:15Speaker 2: they're not cuddly, lovable.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Well, we've had a fatality in the last month.
- 21:19Speaker 2: They will eat you. You've got alligators, You've got you've
- 21:22Speaker 2: got snakes, You've got poisonous snakes, and a lot of
- 21:24Speaker 2: these things. A lot of these animals you can avoid,
- 21:26Speaker 2: but you never know. There could be something wrong with
- 21:28Speaker 2: and whatever. There's all kinds of situations that you may
- 21:31Speaker 2: have to defend yourself in the woods because you've got
- 21:33Speaker 2: mother nature. But it's out to do what mother nature does.
- 21:36Speaker 1: It's that loner that's got a.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Living in the woods because he can't live around people.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And then now all of a sudden you have entered
- 21:42Speaker 2: his domain. And you know, I mean, it's just how
- 21:48Speaker 2: do you don't go away? Preston? You know, how do you.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Enjoy or we can't even go there. There's just I'm
- 21:56Speaker 1: even saying it. You can't and you can't do that.
- 21:58Speaker 1: What is the prudent thing to do? If you're out camping,
- 22:02Speaker 1: whether you are a fit male and you got your
- 22:05Speaker 1: act together, you're with your wife, you're with your wife
- 22:07Speaker 1: and your children, what in your mind is like bare minimum?
- 22:13Speaker 2: So I never go into the woods without a without
- 22:17Speaker 2: a knife or in a gun. I don't personally. Usually
- 22:21Speaker 2: when I'm in the woods, you're carrying. Oh yeah, and
- 22:24Speaker 2: it will Usually I spend more time in the woods
- 22:26Speaker 2: during hunting season, so I'm there for a reason and
- 22:29Speaker 2: sure so, but yeah, I'm gonna have some kind of weapon.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I'm you know, if I'm camping, I'm gonna have a hatchet.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna have a hatchet close by, because you use
- 22:38Speaker 2: that kind of stuff catching you're camping. I always forget
- 22:41Speaker 2: the tent pegs or whatever. You know, I might need
- 22:44Speaker 2: to cut a cut a limb or make make make
- 22:46Speaker 2: your own right whatever. So you know, those are the
- 22:50Speaker 2: kind of things that you carry when you're camping. Bear spray,
- 22:54Speaker 2: the big cans of oc uh oliah resincapsation. Bear spray
- 22:58Speaker 2: is not a bad idea.
- 23:01Speaker 1: If you are out and you've decided you're going to
- 23:04Speaker 1: carry for the purposes of just personal protection for whether
- 23:07Speaker 1: it's people or animals. And are you carrying a revolver?
- 23:11Speaker 1: Are you carrying semi automatic?
- 23:12Speaker 2: Depends on where I'm at, but a semi automatic most
- 23:14Speaker 2: of the time, I have a I have a I
- 23:16Speaker 2: carry a glock ten millimeter, which is a little bit bigger,
- 23:19Speaker 2: more powerful than I would carry every day. But that's
- 23:23Speaker 2: that's what I usually carry it.
- 23:24Speaker 1: And you're carrying outside the waistband with that thing.
- 23:26Speaker 2: No, I'm carrying it on a chest rig. Okay, I
- 23:30Speaker 2: A I have a chest rig that the gun is
- 23:32Speaker 2: basically planted right up here at the top of my chest,
- 23:34Speaker 2: so my waistband is free. And if I'm going through
- 23:36Speaker 2: the bushes or woods or whatever, I'm not have something
- 23:39Speaker 2: pulling on my holster.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Gotcha.
- 23:42Speaker 2: People that hunt in sure enough bear country up north,
- 23:45Speaker 2: you know, you go out fishing and fly fishing in Montana,
- 23:49Speaker 2: you won't find one of those guys up there that's
- 23:51Speaker 2: not armed with a fairly large caliber firearm, probably carried
- 23:56Speaker 2: in some manner where they can get to it fly
- 23:58Speaker 2: fishing because a grizzly bear attack or black beer attack, whatever.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Is this a wise way to think about it. I
- 24:04Speaker 1: will not live my life assuming everybody's my enemy. But
- 24:06Speaker 1: I'm not going to live my life assuming everyone's going
- 24:09Speaker 1: to be my friend.
- 24:10Speaker 2: That's very safe to say, you know, I'm I don't
- 24:14Speaker 2: assume anybody is my enemy until they behave that way,
- 24:18Speaker 2: you know I've I don't. I'd like to say everybody
- 24:20Speaker 2: I meets a friend but you know that's that's not realistic,
- 24:23Speaker 2: you know.
- 24:24Speaker 1: But that's one of those things. Again. Be aware of
- 24:26Speaker 1: your surroundings. Even in the wilderness. You got to be
- 24:29Speaker 1: there as well, and trust your discernment. If you if
- 24:33Speaker 1: you see somebody that just sends the wrong signals, wrong vibes, yeah.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Try to get away from them, don't you know, Get
- 24:38Speaker 2: away from them as quickly as possible if you can.
- 24:41Speaker 2: I'm not saying you turn around and run, yeah, yeah,
- 24:46Speaker 2: but uh but yeah, just get away from them. Uh,
- 24:51Speaker 2: you know, and if they and they're pursue you at
- 24:54Speaker 2: that point, then you know, then you know for sure,
- 24:57Speaker 2: you know, running from a predator will almost always trigger
- 25:02Speaker 2: a predatory response, which is to chase.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I hope next time we visit we don't have to
- 25:07Speaker 1: talk about a bunch of stories like this, and then yeah,
- 25:10Speaker 1: good to see you.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Thank you. JD.
