- 0:00If you sleep with someone who is a slave, you will have your own
- 0:05due punishment. Throughout the history of the
- 0:07world, I don't think there's been as many women who choose
- 0:10prostitution as women who are forced into it.
- 0:13They got to a place they were so thirsty and they drank and they
- 0:15all got sick. The bitter water was made
- 0:18healthy by putting in the tree the crossing of the Red Sea.
- 0:23Paul says in 1st Corinthians 10 that that is the symbol of our
- 0:27baptism. The woman would come and drink
- 0:30the bitter water. Little dust is taken from the
- 0:32Tabernacle and put in water. She drinks the bitter water.
- 0:35If her belly doesn't swell and if she's still healthy, then
- 0:40this suspicious husband is. Hello.
- 0:47Welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:49I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, part of the team that wants to build
- 0:53enduring faith in Jesus Christ by defending and illuminating
- 0:58Scripture. And as we look at the Old
- 1:00Testament, today I'm focusing on the women, the handmaidens,
- 1:04harems, and heroines as they seek their Messiah.
- 1:09And today we get to look at the books of Leviticus and Numbers.
- 1:12Now I know most of our reading for Come Follow Me should be
- 1:15just in numbers, but there's a few things in Leviticus that
- 1:17we're not touched on, so I want to make sure we do those.
- 1:20I've got 6 named women and a lot more unnamed women to include.
- 1:25As we discussed some laws that protected women, we're going to
- 1:29hear of the last few years of Miriam's life.
- 1:33The children that grow up and are allowed to enter into the
- 1:37promised land, the daughters of Moab, the daughters of the
- 1:40nations. And then we get our five
- 1:43daughters of Zevlothian and their great ability to stand up
- 1:48and ask for land for their father, and Joshua enters the
- 1:52promised land. So that is where we're going
- 1:55today. And then next week we'll do
- 1:56Deuteronomy. This whole cycle, this Exodus
- 2:00cycle, starting from Exodus chapter 1 all the way through
- 2:03the books of Moses, is this 40 year period of purification.
- 2:08And it's a type and shadow not only of the Messiah, of our
- 2:11Savior Jesus Christ, but also of the plan of salvation.
- 2:15So if you can zoom out and take a bird's eye view of these
- 2:20chapters of the 40 years in the Exodus, we see the prophet Moses
- 2:26repeatedly acting as a type of Christ.
- 2:30Remember, as they're leaving Egypt, the Passover lamb
- 2:32obviously represents the Son of God sacrifice.
- 2:36And then we have them leaving Egypt just as the toddler Jesus
- 2:40left Egypt, and just as we all must leave the wickedness of the
- 2:44world, the crossing of the Red Sea.
- 2:46Paul says in 1st Corinthians 10 that that is the symbol of our
- 2:50baptism, that they cross the Red Sea just as we will be baptized.
- 2:55And they ate the manna and the water just as we have the
- 2:59sacrament. And the pillar of light or fire
- 3:03and the cloud by day represents the Spirit of God in our lives
- 3:07and their lives. You know, you can see this
- 3:10beautiful plan of salvation and these beautiful emblems that are
- 3:13used in our Savior's life as well.
- 3:15The next one I love from our Savior's life.
- 3:18Do you remember when the water was bitter?
- 3:19They got to a place they were so thirsty and they drank and they
- 3:22all got sick. The bitter water was made
- 3:25healthy by putting in the tree. You know, Moses took that branch
- 3:30and put it in the log and the water became purified.
- 3:35And as I think about this is a symbol of our Savior on at the
- 3:39end of his life on the tree being hung on the cross is being
- 3:43hung on a tree. And it is through that tree that
- 3:47the healing takes place. As for our mortal life to become
- 3:51immortal, you remember the battle of the Rafidim where
- 3:55they're the Amorites are fighting and and it's the where
- 3:59death is raging and and Moses, by representing our Savior,
- 4:04opens his arms out and and God prevails.
- 4:09And remember he has Aaron, a representative of the Aaronic
- 4:12Priesthood and her on the other side holding up sustaining him.
- 4:17And through the three of them, they are representing, I feel
- 4:20the and the power of God, that the organization of God to do
- 4:25things. It's, it's, it's just amazing.
- 4:27As we continue along through the Exodus cycle, you know, Moses
- 4:30climbs up Mount Sinai, receives the law, but Jesus is the
- 4:35lawgiver. And his higher law comes later,
- 4:37both in the New Testament and the Book of Mormon.
- 4:39And hopefully in our conference reports, we're learning more
- 4:43about the law of the Lord in a higher, holier way.
- 4:46And we've got the story of the golden calf, and we've got the
- 4:49story of Satan tempting the Lord, as well as Satan tempting
- 4:53all of us. The Tabernacle is built and as
- 4:57they prepare to enter in the Lord's presence and as we go
- 5:01through this cycle with not only with the women and the men, I
- 5:05hope you can zoom out sometimes and see not only types and
- 5:09shadows of of God, but this plan of salvation that we all need to
- 5:13go through these symbolic representations.
- 5:16And in the Old Testament, when we get to the book of Hoshiya,
- 5:18he says it's the lives of the prophets that are testifying of
- 5:22Christ as well. So I hope that as we jump in now
- 5:27to Leviticus and numbers that you can see some of these
- 5:31beautiful symbols and put to effort.
- 5:35The Levitical priesthood manual, the book of Leviticus mentions
- 5:39women a few Times Now. It's usually general like we
- 5:42want all the men and women, everyone to be offering
- 5:45sacrifices. The Lord commanded quote.
- 5:48If anyone meaning male or female sin in ignorance, they must
- 5:54bring a sacrifice of the atonement.
- 5:55That's Leviticus 4 verse 27. We read also in Leviticus 5 and
- 6:00we're you know, it's repeated a lot of times.
- 6:02This, this, if anyone this, this word in Hebrew is often
- 6:06translated as man in King James, but in other translations it's
- 6:11either a soul or a person, but it includes both male and
- 6:14female. You know, the word is
- 6:15everything. And these beautiful offerings of
- 6:20either unblemished animals or your first fruits represent, of
- 6:24course, the great and last sacrifice of the Son of God,
- 6:28this beautiful type of Christ on an altar which has also been
- 6:34anointed to be a holy thing. And if it's been anointed, it is
- 6:38a Messiah. It's a Messiah.
- 6:40It is a place of sacred worship and holiness.
- 6:46This sacrificial system that's taught to Israelites required
- 6:51that sin came at a price, but that God provides a way for them
- 6:57to be forgiven and cleansed. And the book of Leviticus
- 7:01describes many different types of offerings.
- 7:04I'm going to talk about four of them.
- 7:05There's a thanks offering. It's a voluntary gift and you
- 7:09can either use it with fine flour and oil, you add a little
- 7:13frankincense and you're just telling the Lord thank you.
- 7:16And it has the deliciousness of the smell and the little salt is
- 7:22added. This is a way of thanking our
- 7:25God. There's the purification
- 7:28offerings. There's a sin offering that you
- 7:31did not mean to sin. You know, these are animal
- 7:35sacrifices and they are to vicariously carry our
- 7:41shortcomings and cleanse and restore one status before God.
- 7:46Those are all described in Leviticus chapter 4.
- 7:49But the sin offering when we know we've been sinning.
- 7:52This is in Leviticus 23 and also numbers 15.
- 7:57There's a presumption this there we we are defiantly facing
- 8:02severe consequences if we do not change.
- 8:06And so the Lord has a way saying no, you couldn't turn around.
- 8:11I'm thrilled that even nowadays we can give offerings.
- 8:15We can give of our time, talents, and energy as
- 8:19gratitude. But I also feel like sometimes
- 8:22when I need extra blessings, I want to give more in my
- 8:25offerings. I want to give not only more
- 8:27time, but even more of my means to ask the Lord for help or to
- 8:32thank Him or to apologize. The entire chapter 12 of
- 8:39Leviticus describes the wonderful way that God has
- 8:42allowed a time period for healing, and it's called the
- 8:46purification period or the purification era.
- 8:51And this is 40 days after a woman has a son and 80 days
- 8:57after a woman has a daughter. She has 40 days divided up from
- 9:02the seven days before the circumcision and then 33 days
- 9:06after that. And you have a seven day period
- 9:09before the mother then needs to go to the temple and make her
- 9:13offering of either they're a lamb or two doves if two birds,
- 9:182 pigeons. If she doesn't have enough a
- 9:20financial means to afford a lamb.
- 9:23But this purification period is doubled.
- 9:26If she has a daughter, she gets 80 days.
- 9:29Not that the delivery's any worse with daughters.
- 9:31I've had both. I don't think so.
- 9:32I've worked in labor and delivery.
- 9:34I don't think there's a difference in gender, but there
- 9:37is a difference in the fact that symbolically the woman was
- 9:41created second. So they give it twice as much
- 9:43time. And I don't think it would
- 9:45bother any woman to take 80 days after a delivery to recover and
- 9:51to be purified and to allow the cleansing of her body and the
- 9:56healing to all take place. Sometimes it's a lot longer than
- 9:5980 days, depending on how hard the labor was.
- 10:02But at the end of that 80 days or 40 days, we have this
- 10:07symbolic cleansing period either doubled for a female or singular
- 10:12for a for a baby boy. But either way, this number is
- 10:18used from Noah's ark, from the fastings of our Lord, from the
- 10:2240 years in the wilderness. 40 is repeated over and over, and
- 10:26this is where we understand the symbolic interpretation as we
- 10:31continue on in Leviticus. Chapter 19 sort of repeats the
- 10:3510 commandments from Exodus 20 and they summarize the 10 by
- 10:40referring to two important ones in verse 3.
- 10:43It says ye shall fear every man, his mother and his father, and
- 10:48keep my sabbaths. I am the Lord your God.
- 10:51This idea that your mother needs to be revered and honored is, is
- 10:58was always a, a wonderful commandment to have.
- 11:00It cut me short as a teenager when I was not as as sensitive
- 11:05to my, my mother as I should have been.
- 11:07But now as an adult and a mother looking on this, I have a whole
- 11:13different view. You know, our lives are honoring
- 11:16our parents and we have heavenly parents that also need to be
- 11:20honored. And some of you may say my
- 11:22parents aren't worth honoring. Then you can focus on your
- 11:26heavenly parents and you can focus on the next generation
- 11:29having someone worthy of being honored or an auntie or whatever
- 11:33situation you're in. I also appreciated in Leviticus
- 11:3819 the message to protect female slaves.
- 11:43Now, remember, a lot of times a woman didn't have a choice if
- 11:45she was going to be sold into slavery.
- 11:47But Leviticus describes, this is the NIV translation.
- 11:50If a man sleeps with a female slave who's promised to another
- 11:54man, I think that means they're betrothed, they're engaged, you
- 11:56know, they've been, they've been set apart to be married, but who
- 12:00has not been ransomed or given her freedom, There must be due
- 12:04punishment. So if you go and fall in love
- 12:07with someone who's promised to somebody else, you're going to
- 12:08be in trouble. But if you sleep with someone
- 12:11who is a slave, you will have your own due punishment.
- 12:16Now the the female, because she is still, she doesn't have her
- 12:21freedom. She is not put to death.
- 12:24This is this, this protects her to say you can't just go and
- 12:29sleep with a slave. You can't just go and and abuse
- 12:33a woman because she's in a different position.
- 12:36And we find more laws protecting women dealing with the law of
- 12:40chastity as we continue on in chapter 19 of Leviticus, verse
- 12:4529. And then chapter 21 talks about
- 12:48protecting your daughters from prostitution.
- 12:51Throughout the history of the world, I don't think there's
- 12:53been as many women who choose prostitution as women who are
- 12:57forced into it by someone else. And they don't stay in it
- 13:01because of their own choice most of the time.
- 13:04God had commanded the fathers not to exploit their daughters.
- 13:09Now, according to the law of Moses, a father could sell
- 13:12himself, his daughter, his sons, his wife into servitude, into
- 13:17slavery for a period of time so that they could pay off his
- 13:21debts. And we read that if this happens
- 13:26though, and a woman is sold into prostitution, wickedness is
- 13:33going to come and the land will be destroyed.
- 13:36That is the law of Moses protects young women from being
- 13:41forced into any sexual immorality, especially for
- 13:45financial gain. Moving on to Leviticus 21, verse
- 13:487 and 13 and 14, we we learn who can marry a priest, a descendant
- 13:54of Aaron, and who can marry the high priest.
- 13:58First of all, all Israelites were encouraged to marry someone
- 14:02of the covenant, marry someone who shares the same values, who
- 14:06wants to worship God, who wants to have all of their focus on
- 14:11his holy sanctuary and coming unto Him and keeping his laws
- 14:15and rights and statutes. But the commandments
- 14:17specifically to the priests identify people that need to be
- 14:21compatible, marriage partners who are equally pure and clean.
- 14:26Verse 7 says they can't take a wife among who's a whore or
- 14:29profane. Neither should they take a woman
- 14:31who's been put away from by her husband any unholiness because
- 14:35the woman also needs to be holy. And then it's even higher.
- 14:39There's one more requirement for a high priest.
- 14:41He cannot marry a widow, and that is not the case Now.
- 14:46We have no problem marrying widows or divorced women if it
- 14:50is done with pure hearts, with repentance and but we are all
- 14:56commanded as Israelites that we need to be careful in our choice
- 15:02of marriage, that we can find people who want to build the
- 15:05Kingdom and raise a family up unto Christ.
- 15:08We want to find companions who who not only love the Lord, but
- 15:12want to teach that love to their children, their grandchildren,
- 15:16or maybe if they don't have any children, to their community
- 15:19around them and other family members.
- 15:22But this idea of the high priest only marrying a virgin, I think
- 15:27symbolizes this pure relationship between God and his
- 15:31covenant people. As we get into the book of
- 15:34Exodus, we'll read a little bit more about that, where the Lord
- 15:37often uses this imagery of of marriage between God and his
- 15:42covenant people. Isaiah uses it, Hoshiya uses it.
- 15:45And, and This is why I think the high priest who represents God
- 15:49on earth when he's acting in the ordinances, remember Section 84,
- 15:54the oath and covenant of the priesthood says it's in the
- 15:57ordinances that the power of godliness is manifest.
- 16:02So as the high priest is acting as a type or shadow, a
- 16:07foreshadow of our great Savior Jesus Christ, he needs to be
- 16:14pure and holy. And so his wife is, is
- 16:17specifically said to be a virgin.
- 16:22Now the daughters of the priest, just like the sons of the priest
- 16:25and the wife of the priest, all join in to these holy offering
- 16:29feasts. And they do not own property.
- 16:33The property they are given is the the food offerings that are
- 16:37brought into the temple. And these holy offerings are
- 16:41reserved for their families. And it's not just the priests
- 16:44that eat them. The husbands and wives and
- 16:47daughters get to join in. The only person that doesn't get
- 16:51to do it is if a daughter of a priest, so it's a descendant of
- 16:56Aaron, chooses to marry outside of either the covenant or even
- 17:01the the priestly lineage of Levi.
- 17:04Then they do not get to come back in and enjoy the food that
- 17:07is for that family because these other tribes had their own land
- 17:11and property and they can go there and eat.
- 17:13This is a way the Lord is taking care of his servants.
- 17:16Now let's step into the book of Numbers.
- 17:18There's a lot of counting in this one, and I assume the
- 17:22numbers are fairly accurate. But the idea that we have over
- 17:261,000,000 people, you know, 600,000 that are the age of male
- 17:31warriors suggest we have well over 1,000,000 people.
- 17:35And, and, but there are parts of the book of Numbers that
- 17:39describe more of the Law of Moses.
- 17:42And there's a few little details that specifically discuss women
- 17:45that I'd like to share with you. One of them says that any woman
- 17:50who wrongs another needs to be accountable.
- 17:54I love this. Of course, women are agents.
- 17:56They have, they are morally accountable for their behavior.
- 17:59And the Law of Moses says, hey, you can't blame your father or
- 18:03your husband, whatever you if you've committed a sin, you need
- 18:06to be morally responsible for it.
- 18:09There's also similar language that emphasizes that women are
- 18:12held to the same standard of righteousness.
- 18:15They have to held equal responsibility for making
- 18:17restitution when they have wronged others.
- 18:20So Numbers chapter 5 is is very good about that.
- 18:24Numbers chapter 5 later on versus 12 to 31 talk about women
- 18:27who are accused of unfaithfulness.
- 18:29And this is another one of those laws that protected women.
- 18:32I love it. It says that if a wife is
- 18:35married to a man who all the sudden gets jealous and he
- 18:38claims that she's had an illicit relationship, he claims that
- 18:42she's flirting with someone else.
- 18:43He's acclaimed she's unclean and he wants her out of there.
- 18:46And given the scarlet A, there was a ritual that came with the
- 18:51law of Moses that said I will protect this woman if she's
- 18:55innocent. I'm not going to just trust this
- 18:58one husband's view because if we don't have any other witnesses,
- 19:02the woman would come and drink the bitter water.
- 19:05Little dust is taken from the Tabernacle and put in water.
- 19:08She drinks the bitter water. And if she her belly doesn't
- 19:14swell and if she's still healthy, then the suspicious
- 19:18husband is is not allowed to divorce her, not allowed to
- 19:24badmouth her. She's allowed to bear children.
- 19:28She's innocent and her whole community knows she was
- 19:31innocent. I think it's a wonderful thing.
- 19:34I didn't think it was too great that she had to be married to
- 19:36the guy still, but I think it's a different time and age and say
- 19:40hopefully they could work it out.
- 19:41And because that would be the better part even now in many
- 19:44cases. But in some cases, it's better
- 19:47to allow her to leave. And perhaps that was an option
- 19:50than to, I don't know the details.
- 19:52And it concludes in Numbers chapter 5, verse 28, that if
- 19:56she's innocent, she shall be free and shall conceive seed.
- 20:01And they promise both vindication and future children,
- 20:05which in that day and age was extremely important.
- 20:08One of my favorite laws to understand is the Nazarite vow
- 20:12and in numbers chapter 6 we learn more about this time
- 20:17period where Israelites could separate themselves and Nazarite
- 20:20vow takes it usually a period of time, but sometimes it's for
- 20:23life to separate oneself to the Lord's service.
- 20:26I see this as a call to a mission or call to a certain
- 20:30calling and it requires great commitments.
- 20:33Now in that day and age. Interestingly, one of the
- 20:36requirements whether they avoided everything that was made
- 20:39by a grape. So that's not just wine, that's
- 20:42also grape juice and it's raisins and anything that even
- 20:45of the Grapevine, one was not allowed to cut their hair, one
- 20:50was not allowed to touch a dead body.
- 20:52But the main focus were not these three side things.
- 20:55It was to separate yourself for God's service, and these
- 21:01restrictions were just to help them be different and separate
- 21:06themselves. They also have symbolic meanings
- 21:09as well, but for women this was particularly significant because
- 21:13it allowed them direct access to the higher level of the religion
- 21:17dedicated to consecrate themselves before God with God
- 21:22as their head. I just, I'd love this.
- 21:25I'm sure you remember some of the stories in the Bible.
- 21:27Hannah is an opportunity to make this vow before she has Samuel.
- 21:31It's a wonderful story. And we also have Samson's mother
- 21:35who takes this vow. The next group that I want to
- 21:37look at in Numbers 11 is not necessarily a group of women,
- 21:41but female imagery. God uses these wonderful
- 21:46maternal imagery for His divine nature and for the role of His
- 21:51prophets. Moses cries out, Have I
- 21:56conceived? Or another translation?
- 21:58Have I begotten this people? These are wonderful phrases that
- 22:04refer to a woman's role of conceiving and bearing and
- 22:09nursing their child. But literally, the Lord and
- 22:14Moses use this image to describe God as a nursing father.
- 22:20You know, he who nourishes and cherishes his children at the
- 22:24breast. It's a wonderful image of our
- 22:28God, and I believe it works well for both of our heavenly
- 22:32parents. I love the description that our
- 22:36God of the Old Testament, Jehovah, embodies both the Lord
- 22:41of hosts, these masculine military reigning images, and
- 22:46the feminine roles acting both as a father and a mother to
- 22:50Israel. It's a metaphor of carrying the
- 22:53people not just in the bosom but in the womb.
- 22:57It evokes these tender intimacies of nursing the
- 23:00mothers and holding that infant close to their heart.
- 23:03I just I'm so glad that these female images are used with God.
- 23:08You know we call our Heavenly Father a reason, not just
- 23:13because of our pre mortal existence, but he is described
- 23:18as conceiving and bearing and nursing us these beautiful
- 23:22divine fatherhood, the most important kind of attributes we
- 23:27can attain. And some of us, regardless of
- 23:30our gender, need to work on these nurturing Christ like
- 23:34attributes. I'd rather that we didn't say
- 23:36some of these attributes were gender related.
- 23:39I'd rather we just all tried to become more Christ like for the
- 23:44next last few minutes. I want to talk about our six
- 23:46named women Now. We've already talked a lot about
- 23:49Miriam, but this is the time where Miriam begins murmuring.
- 23:53She's speaking against her little brother because of the
- 23:57Ethiopian wife. As I mentioned before, I don't
- 24:00know if this is a wife that he had when he was in Egypt or if
- 24:03he's taking a different wife since then, but it's not.
- 24:05It doesn't sound like it's Zipporah, his wife that he
- 24:09married in the land of Midian, who's the daughter of Jethro,
- 24:12the high priest. In other places in the
- 24:16scriptures, it's called a Kushite or an Ethiopian.
- 24:20It may refer to an region South of Egypt in Africa.
- 24:23I don't know because we use both of these two words.
- 24:28But this may have been someone that was new or someone that was
- 24:35old, but for whatever reason it is, Miriam doesn't like it.
- 24:39And Aaron goes along with it, it sounds like.
- 24:42So God defends. Moses punishes Miriam with
- 24:45leprosy, as we talked about before, and she repents that her
- 24:51brothers plead with the Lord to heal her.
- 24:53She is healed after seven days. The group moves on.
- 24:57Everyone is thrilled. But by the time we get to
- 25:00Numbers 20, Miriam dies. Remember, anyone over 20 in that
- 25:06early group is going to die before they leave, except for
- 25:09our righteous Joshua and Caleb, the two spies that obeyed the
- 25:14Lord. And of course Moses, we learn in
- 25:17restored tradition was translated.
- 25:20But at Miriam's death, we have a beautiful description in Numbers
- 25:2320 of how Israel mourned for her and how they waited and, and and
- 25:29loved her. She was the great prophetess of
- 25:32that era, and during those 40 years, during that purification
- 25:37period, they prepared to answer into the presence of the Lord.
- 25:42The last group of women that I want to talk about is the
- 25:45daughters of Zelafedin and numbers 26 and 27.
- 25:51And then when we move up to Joshua 17, we're going to hear
- 25:54about them again. And in First Chronicles, these
- 25:56valiant women, by the end of the 40 years, there's these five
- 26:00daughters who are still alive and they have no brothers.
- 26:04And so they don't get any land assigned to them.
- 26:06So they go before Moses and they say, please don't leave us out.
- 26:11Our father's name needs to be remembered.
- 26:15And sure enough, Moses goes to the Lord, He prays about it, and
- 26:19the Lord says, yes, the daughters are right.
- 26:22Give them their land. Give the women inheritance when
- 26:25the men when there's no sons. And that is wonderful to not
- 26:30only see Moses willingness to pray about something like this
- 26:33because this is not the norm in the ancient world.
- 26:36Women usually did not get inheritance.
- 26:38But from these great daughters, 6 generations from Manasseh, you
- 26:43know these daughters are Joseph's first born.
- 26:47They are bold, they are brought before the Lord and their names
- 26:51are listed every time in this order, Mahala, Noah, Hogala,
- 26:56Milka, and Tazak. They are remembered in my heart
- 27:01for their braveness, their fairness, and their willingness
- 27:05to stand up for which is right. And they also went to the Lord's
- 27:09anointed and said, May we? And then again when they go into
- 27:13Joshua asked may we? And certainly the Lord answered
- 27:17their prayers. We've got three more references
- 27:20to females at the end of the book of Numbers.
- 27:23One of them is quite ironic. This is from Numbers 14, verse
- 27:263. Do you remember when the
- 27:29children of Israel are very mad at Moses saying we're going to
- 27:33take over the land of Canaan? They, they say, you know, we're
- 27:36just going to all die and, and our wives and our children are
- 27:39going to be pray and they're going to be sold in for booty to
- 27:42these people. And ironically, God turned their
- 27:46complaint into a prophecy. And because of their unbelief,
- 27:51that entire generation of adults had to die in the wilderness.
- 27:55But those young wives, many wives were under 20 and children
- 28:01were the only ones who, instead of being sold off as booty, are
- 28:05now in the right place to enter into the promised land.
- 28:10God reverses what they said and to demonstrate not only the lack
- 28:15of faith of the first generation, but that these women
- 28:19and children had faith and were willing to make that covenant to
- 28:23enter into his presence. The next group of women occurs
- 28:28shortly before they're to enter into the promised land.
- 28:30But it is very, very sad #16 says there's a group of rebels,
- 28:35Koran, Dothan, Abram, and they rebel against Moses leadership.
- 28:44And there's this tragic moment when God's judgement is going to
- 28:47fall not only on these rebels who challenged Moses leadership,
- 28:52but also their families and their wives and their children.
- 28:58The Lord says everyone who wants to change and repent can change
- 29:01and repent. And those of you that don't, the
- 29:03earth's going to open up and swallow them up.
- 29:06And their households, their men and their women and the wives
- 29:11were included in this collective punishment for their patriarch
- 29:15sins. Now, I don't know if those women
- 29:18had the rights to stand up and, and, and say, no, I will not
- 29:22follow his bad example. I sort of think they may have
- 29:25been able to do it because I notice how Miriam can do that
- 29:30and how these daughters of Zelophant could do that.
- 29:32But for whatever reason, these daughters and and wives were
- 29:37taken. As the battles begin between the
- 29:39Israelites, we learn of the daughters of Moab who were
- 29:42killed. Numbers 21.
- 29:44Woe to the Moab. And, you know, the mention of
- 29:47both the sons and daughters here to me emphasizes the
- 29:51completeness of Moab's defeat. You know, entire families, not
- 29:56just the fighting men, fell into these captivity.
- 30:00But as we finally end this book, we then have Joshua ready to
- 30:05take the children of Israel into the promised land.
- 30:08And returning back to this 40 year ecstasycle, I want to just
- 30:12remind you that Joshua, Yeshua is the name for Jesus in Hebrew
- 30:18versus Greek, and that as Joshua who led the children into the
- 30:24Promised Land, so too Jesus will lead us into our promised land.
- 30:30And we have these beautiful types of Christ in through the
- 30:33prophet Moses and the prophet Joshua.
- 30:38And I hope that as you study your beautiful Old Testament
- 30:41this week, you can seek your Messiah and find him in your
- 30:46life. I have found Him in my life and
- 30:50I believe through all my purification periods of 40 years
- 30:54walking in the wilderness that He has been walking beside me,
- 30:58that He is my help and my salvation.
- 31:02I testify of this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
