- 0:44Hello, and welcome back to. I'm still with a blunt penknife
- 0:48with AMI and Lucroy. My guests today, Joe Ford,
- 0:53hello. I'm very happy to be here.
- 0:55Oh good. And what episode?
- 0:57We're going to be watching today.
- 0:58Joe Ford, hang on a minute. Before we even get to this
- 1:02episode, I need to take you to task.
- 1:04Mister what's what are we doing? What has occurred to one of my
- 1:09Favorite podcasts. Oh, I lost some Gallifrey
- 1:12podcast. It's lost, but things do get
- 1:15lost. You know.
- 1:16He's all right. It's sucks for Amy's crack and
- 1:19on the other side of the universe, it'd be so lucky.
- 1:26No, yeah, it was time. It's time to retire.
- 1:29I really felt like I wanted a bit more time to just sit back
- 1:33and enjoy dr. Too, often analyzed me since
- 1:37then, though. I've probably done more podcast.
- 1:39Never. Yeah, but there is such a
- 1:43difference is between turning up and just chucking it in some
- 1:47thoughts then actually editing and scheduling.
- 1:50And all the other bits of podcasting that people don't
- 1:53really really sorry about straight men, you
- 2:05know? Sorry, we're back so bad.
- 2:07Let's, let's not go there. All right.
- 2:09What else did you start? It's good to start this episode
- 2:11on a, on a light. No.
- 2:13Because boy, we're in for some choppy Waters this week, I think
- 2:16so. Yeah.
- 2:17Well, you made with done this before, you know, we've always
- 2:20agreed. We did rings of akhaten.
- 2:21We loved it. We did not love a monster's
- 2:24twice and we loved it release. The drug cut?
- 2:28Yeah, I think that you are you sure II think I specifically
- 2:34asked you this time, which one of these do you not like And you
- 2:40said a good man goes to war and let's kill Hitler indeed.
- 2:45Can I can I say so very quickly? You can I love Doctor Who?
- 2:51Well, that's obvious. So I have about 500 podcasts,
- 2:54that's death. I cannot think I was trying to
- 2:58think of earlier of a time when there have been as many
- 3:04successive, episodes of Doctor Who that I haven't enjoyed.
- 3:09Enjoyed and it looks like season 6 and I can't think of any other
- 3:14time in the show's history. So I'll put a caveat at the
- 3:18beginning of this in that I really dislike.
- 3:21The two episodes were talking about today.
- 3:23That is a subjective opinion before you hurt me, it's just
- 3:27that. I will yeah.
- 3:29Well yeah, but It's just not for me and that's fair enough.
- 3:36Like you must have, you know before we start with it was a
- 3:39period up to the your kind of less keen on probably from the
- 3:44middle of a woman who fell to Earth to the beginning of the
- 3:48power of the doctors problem. I think that's a fair chunk of
- 3:54that era. You know, where does it start
- 3:56and end for you? Then wait a minute there must be
- 3:59episodes in between the you enjoy somewhere in there.
- 4:02The ones that are Think I would actually pick out and watch
- 4:06would be Rosa War of the sontarans hands and the one
- 4:14after it once upon time, I really enjoyed that even though
- 4:16it got quite mixed reaction. Well, yeah, definitely.
- 4:21Do you like resolution and so I think I don't know if it ever
- 4:27put them on though. Like purposely I could do a
- 4:32Jodie, Whittaker commentary. Yeah.
- 4:34It would be good for I point of what we're doing today.
- 4:37Yeah, it was. Yeah, I would like to do ability
- 4:41at Asia. Got to know it's been done but
- 4:43that's what I probably didn't. Probably watch and everyone says
- 4:48his brilliant and I quite like to give it another go and I've
- 4:52also still to this day, never seen.
- 4:53Can you hear me? I don't just never seen, you
- 4:55know what, maybe we'll do that one.
- 4:57Then possibly, that might be good for a into mental health
- 5:02and a man whose fingers Leave his hands.
- 5:04I mean absolutely delightful. Well okay I'm basically just
- 5:09drunk. What is your Zoom thinks a gang?
- 5:11A baby? I'll put the nickname in for
- 5:15this episode, the last episode. No there's no.
- 5:22Hey there's no gasps. Oh
- 5:36consistently episodes for you all season six, just the whole
- 5:40of it. I like the doctor's wife in the
- 5:42dog called The God complex and that is it in Series 6.
- 5:45The rest you're not a fan of Impossible Astronaut day the
- 5:49Moon. I think Impossible Astronaut is
- 5:51a really terrible way to start the season and I think ending
- 5:56that two-parter with so many unresolved plot threads.
- 6:01It's an appalling way to start a season of Doctor.
- 6:03Who at the end of that, I was like, yeah, I'm like exhausted
- 6:07already. And we haven't we haven't even
- 6:10started exploring some of this, I disagree, but I think you've
- 6:14got something that it's a bad way to start a broken soul.
- 6:19Of Doctor Who it's the Gap in the middle that really makes it
- 6:24seem structurally not together at all.
- 6:27I'll tell you what it is. I think, Impossible, Planet, and
- 6:29day of the moon, is basically Moffat starting the season with
- 6:33a series finale which yeah, I got about things.
- 6:37Yeah. And when he does it again in
- 6:38series 9, it doesn't work there really either.
- 6:42While God, do that one with Fraser Gregory, you know, and he
- 6:44absolutely loves that one. So I really like the witch's
- 6:47familiar. Yeah, it's just, it's a bumpy
- 6:51way to get there, isn't it? That, you know, like, with
- 6:54Series 6? I was talking about this, with
- 6:55Mark earlier with 36. I think it is the most Ally
- 7:00applaud this, the most ambitious the show has ever been.
- 7:04Yeah, yeah, it should never be that.
- 7:07Ambitious. Again, ever because I should be
- 7:09ambitious on a BBC. Budget may be pretty miserably
- 7:13and, you know, why is because it was to tell a kind of really
- 7:19constructed Arc narrative with a show that has a format of we can
- 7:27go anywhere in time and space from week to week.
- 7:29Yeah. So what's to tell these
- 7:31Standalone stories? Where We're Here There and
- 7:33Everywhere. And it wants to tell this really
- 7:36focused story are at the same time and those two things they
- 7:39don't work together. Well, I think it's just at the
- 7:42start that the ark isn't focused at all.
- 7:45It's a load of mysteries, just added another than others in the
- 7:49That you'll keep watching for the and even the point where you
- 7:52start to get answers as well touch on in that Skillet you
- 7:55just thrown with a lot more mystery just like to keep you in
- 7:59the butt. It's one.
- 8:01It's one of those shows that because scripts are coming in
- 8:05late and you get problems of things.
- 8:07Have to be Rewritten, it's very hard to make a cohesive Focus
- 8:10talk which I think is what I will see.
- 8:12Davis keeps it really simple. We just like a word or a thing
- 8:16and does because it will it everything.
- 8:19Changes all the time and obviously are you obviously are
- 8:22more tempted to indulge in re-watching a rusty day of the
- 8:26story because they are generally stand-alones with delicate art
- 8:31moments in it. Rather than re-watching, let's
- 8:34kill Hitler which isn't a middle of this very dense Arc and I
- 8:37where was I, where am I going? What's going on, right?
- 8:40Yeah but I think the only ones that suffer from that really are
- 8:44this one. Let's kill Hitler in the wedding
- 8:46of River Song. The rest's, the might have a bit
- 8:48of things going on in the back. Out.
- 8:49But whatever. They all stand alone.
- 8:51Reading River Song is my least favorite new series episode not
- 8:55bad but you know, it's what I feel like it's like a, it's like
- 8:58a patchwork quilt. And when you start pulling up
- 9:01the threads, none of it ties up properly and characters have to
- 9:07behave in ways that don't make any sense whatsoever in order
- 9:12for those twists to hit when they do and things like that.
- 9:15So like the we'll get to in in these two.
- 9:19Episodes. Because I feel like this is the
- 9:21point where Amy and Rory stop being characters that I can buy
- 9:24into in any way, shape, or form, and become narrative, ciphers
- 9:28just there to say, words, to make this sprawling, sort of
- 9:32Epic narrative. Makes some kind of sense.
- 9:36Yeah, you can set, you can definitely pull it apart.
- 9:39I think it probably would have been pulled apart a bit more.
- 9:42It's just, at the time, everything was really exciting
- 9:45and you thought there's always more to come.
- 9:47And then people who have been to exhausted Bye.
- 9:50I've never gone back to pull it open and then the people that
- 9:53will go back. I like the people that really
- 9:55like it and on aren't going to question it so much.
- 9:58So I think I've definitely re-watched ever thought.
- 10:01Yeah, could you can pull the story of wide open.
- 10:04It doesn't really make any sense.
- 10:06Why just, why does River Song of to be put in a space suit if
- 10:10it's automatic. Anyway like why is she on the
- 10:12beach twice? There's not really any sort of
- 10:15reason for anything it's that have the Doctor Who fans this
- 10:19is. Their meat and potatoes in it,
- 10:21taking a doctor who story and pulling it apart and going
- 10:24online and explaining everything that don't make sense.
- 10:27Yeah. But I think it was so in depth
- 10:29that people were almost scared to pull it up in case they'd
- 10:32miss something. But actually it's probably not
- 10:35as a way of the River Song timeline.
- 10:37We're come crashing down on and they never be seen again.
- 10:40Like I think a series 5 is got a complex Arc, but it does make
- 10:46sense and it is quite clever. And so before They're that more
- 10:50questionable about pulling this van apart whereas actually this
- 10:53one is a lot more slapdash and as Band-Aids all over it and I
- 10:57think six I've heard, this sound.
- 10:59FTE is a reaction to 5 in that. Moffat never does the same thing
- 11:04twice within 5. He basically does a rusty, Davis
- 11:07esque season is structured like a rusty Davis season.
- 11:11Yeah. With his own arc in there and
- 11:15his own cleverness and basically two years to prepare it.
- 11:19So You can tell those scripts have been polished and that's
- 11:22horrible. Whereas this one, they're just
- 11:24really allowed to knock it out, but strangely, he's gotten like
- 11:2810 times as ambitious, a serious five.
- 11:31So that's sort of iron it out and make it.
- 11:35As structures as it needs to be or as well told as it probably
- 11:39needed, I do research you said before about like it's too
- 11:42ambitious, but I think we always say like dr.
- 11:44Who should always try and be ambitious.
- 11:48I know it doesn't work but it does give you a unique sort of
- 11:52little Series in history. And I think we forget, well, I
- 11:56don't know how it was for you but I just remember it being so
- 11:59exciting at the time. Series 6 was so excited, the
- 12:03MIT. Like before you understand you
- 12:04started shipping out. Lot six and seven hours.
- 12:06Like is this for me anymore? I think.
- 12:08Well, okay, more. So the first half this build-up
- 12:11to who River Song was in that I think a lot of people ingested,
- 12:15I think by the time let's kill Hitler came along people.
- 12:17Then start to tap out, it was around the time that people
- 12:20start to tap out and whether that was cause you know, there's
- 12:23an element of also they outgrew this show but I think there was
- 12:27an element of yeah, fuck this. The last time I'm going to say
- 12:31that we really should press play.
- 12:33You know. I want this which discusses a
- 12:35Already we haven't gone in yet but we've River song.
- 12:39I think people think I like River song as character I do
- 12:43like River song as a character but I liked her when she is sort
- 12:48of brought down and allowed to act like a person.
- 12:52So I like her in silence, a library, The Forest of the dead
- 12:55and I really, really like her. And her husband's of River Song,
- 12:58especially the second half of it, I think are some of our best
- 13:02material, basically, all the stuff that Well, the Matt Smith
- 13:06stuff. I'm one, I don't by Matt Smith
- 13:08and an extinct Kingston as a couple.
- 13:10I don't see the chemistry there in the way that I absolutely saw
- 13:14chemistry between her and Peter Capaldi.
- 13:16I mean, I don't see it. I honestly don't see.
- 13:19And you kidding. No, I'm not kidding.
- 13:21A lot of people love husband's River Song and it's just not one
- 13:24of my favorites Axl. Well, I have a break for with
- 13:28her is. I just don't buy the seams
- 13:30between her Karen Gillan, and I don't believe that's her
- 13:34daughter. Guide the way they play it, the
- 13:36way it's written and the way the narrative sort of plays about
- 13:41with how Amy reacts around her daughter, I think it's fun.
- 13:44Like the dysfunctional Moffat family.
- 13:48Like the mother be an old being younger than the daughter and
- 13:51stuff. Well, I think in The Angels,
- 13:53Take Manhattan, it really works. Yes.
- 13:56Yeah. And that bit, the bit of the end
- 13:59of The Angels, Take Manhattan where she goes.
- 14:01Yes, go go and be with Rory, and fuck the doctor basically.
- 14:04And that's the I'm where I'm like, okay, I'm gonna go, I'm
- 14:06sold this, is it? That I absolutely believe that,
- 14:09that is her daughter at that moment, but before, like, you
- 14:13think of Jackie, Tyler and Rose Tyler you.
- 14:15Absolutely, that's, that's mother-daughter.
- 14:17Absolutely, I'm sold in the first that is, that is a
- 14:20different show, isn't it? They did a really good.
- 14:22I think it could have been that good, but it's so different
- 14:26though. It's moffatt's way of doing
- 14:29sitcom time, travel, be writing and yeah, like, it's definitely
- 14:33better in a just taken out and I we If we'd have had a few more
- 14:36episodes of that family Dynamic, it would have been really fun.
- 14:40These are her worst, definitely. I mean, she's not really in good
- 14:43man, but let's kill Hitler. And I think that's the worst
- 14:47characterization by far sort of excuse by the fact, the Reds
- 14:50meant to be all over the place. But can you guess, right?
- 14:54I think one of her lies in? Let's go hit.
- 14:56There is that the worst line of dialogue in all of dogs are?
- 14:59Who can you guess what it is? Is it the bar mitzvah?
- 15:02Yeah, it's Oh God. I was hurling things that the TV
- 15:07Mart was like because the fortune don't briefing that the
- 15:10dirty? Yeah I mean that's just my
- 15:13Affinity roll with it. We watch this thing.
- 15:17Yeah and I think the last thing before we press play though it's
- 15:20like well yeah we've not even pressed play because there's so
- 15:24much to talk it's so juicy that I think like as whether it
- 15:29succeeds or not, as a good piece of television or something,
- 15:32normal viewer would like, as a doctor, he And it's such an
- 15:36interesting periods. Also talked about and really
- 15:39delve into I think, I think whilst The Narrative may be in
- 15:44substantive, the ideas in there are very substantial.
- 15:49Yeah there's a lot to kind of get you nowhere whether you're
- 15:53going to be on the positive side or the negative side.
- 15:56Yeah boy there's lots to talk about yeah kill let's talk that
- 16:01his cave. No you go.
- 16:06I always do it. 5 tuned for them.
- 16:12Three, two, one, go. It's all about her.
- 16:19So here we have previously on how they'll say the Madden cover
- 16:22and popping up in various stories.
- 16:25Yeah. Now that's how you do it but I
- 16:28was super intrigued by that. Yeah, it's really good but as
- 16:32you said before there's just so many are key elements that it's
- 16:35so gets a bit lost because there's so many, it's a shame,
- 16:39I'll call Luke can we very quickly we gotta talk about this
- 16:42bit where the doctor murders, a me at the end.
- 16:44What a good Cliffhanger. This was its So ugly that scene.
- 16:49I right. Really?
- 16:52You like the doctor murder in His companion.
- 16:54Yeah. Because it's ingested.
- 16:58It's horrible. See now, look.
- 17:21Now he's a me, right? I just got a lovely, cute looky
- 17:24looky, baby. Yeah, yeah, she soon forgets
- 17:28about that at the end of. Let's go.
- 17:29Hit that don't show you. You know, it's really funny
- 17:32because I don't know whether it's because I was young or
- 17:35because like I was so interested talk to.
- 17:37But I just didn't even really think about the fact that she
- 17:40doesn't care that she loses a bit of its very strange.
- 17:43Yeah. Like, that's the character be I
- 17:45just can't forgive, is the I don't think a mother thus given
- 17:49birth. If there's been some weird
- 17:52explanation that she's somehow been brought up with her child,
- 17:56as the same age as her as males are still, don't think she'd be
- 17:59like, well I'm very happy to lose my baby.
- 18:02Yeah it's definitely not enough for the doctors just to turn up
- 18:05with River. Some 200 years later and feel
- 18:07like she is but it's something I think questions but I think as
- 18:15you get older you do you think that that's not right?
- 18:17Right. Somebody else, I saw a question
- 18:21in this season is he's how far it goes and I when I did.
- 18:27Oh, but I live in a bucket. You know.
- 18:29This character on a bucket? Yeah.
- 18:31She's one of the regulars in strange, new worlds.
- 18:33Now, the that is Alex. Kurtzman Star Trek series.
- 18:37Oh, cool. I met a say, she fucking
- 18:39brilliant in it as well. She's putting this.
- 18:42You plays this grumpy woman, right?
- 18:44Who tries to find the farm every week and fails miserably, but
- 18:48she's absolutely brilliant as it's good to see.
- 18:50You're getting extra work. They were belong to the big
- 18:52finish picker time, War, Lorna book, The Lord of bucket
- 18:58Adventures, don't you sit there and pretend that you and me
- 19:02ain't gonna buy that, right? You buy it.
- 19:05We cannot say that this but we will fight.
- 19:18And I would go on to the end with the hole Melody Pond is
- 19:21River Song. Revelation almost sums up that
- 19:24Moffat was out of ideas quite quickly.
- 19:28I think like he I think he called Amy Pond, Amy Pond, just
- 19:32for the backup of if he had to do something with the song later
- 19:35on down the line, he can relate it to her.
- 19:37Not like a big plant that it was gonna turn out to be a daughter
- 19:41and then I think by it series 5 goes well it goes what's next?
- 19:44I'll shit explain this. This is.
- 19:48So again, it's been whispering in my ear.
- 19:51The only water in the forest is the river.
- 19:53Yeah. That's weak, isn't it?
- 19:54I think it would, you know what though?
- 19:56Right. I will say this for that twist.
- 19:59I only guessed it about five minutes before it landed Meto
- 20:04and it just makes you feel the deepest in it.
- 20:09Well, I'm not huge on it. Well when they use the new so
- 20:37far away pre-title sequence. Yeah but then I suppose like
- 20:41Daleks are in sontarans are it's something that this ear it does,
- 20:45doesn't it? It's it can throw them in and
- 20:47blow them up as like a little quick speaking to me I love that
- 20:50Dalek who was on that woman's back in resolution by that.
- 20:53That's slithering mutant. Yeah it's good as the mutant,
- 20:56isn't it? Yeah I wanted one of Briggs is
- 20:59best performance. Is that a good mix breaks voice?
- 21:01Oh yeah. Here we go.
- 21:03Oh my God. Is the fat thin ones?
- 21:05Yeah do I have to talk about? I am in no position to talk
- 21:09about this. Okay, we'll say this one point
- 21:14for representation and - 2 million points for insulting.
- 21:21You can see exactly what it's try to do.
- 21:24Like make fun of the fact that people don't even Like
- 21:31appreciate again a person's personality or like just person
- 21:36because they just see them as the label.
- 21:38But so far, it's done so far - yeah, somehow manages to insult
- 21:45people religious people and gay people all in one go.
- 21:50Well, don't that is a hell of a fight.
- 21:57That's probably Moffat slowest. After sensation because he does
- 22:03get better. And in the same episode, you've
- 22:04got Jenny investor here. I think.
- 22:08Yeah. Well, I think you know, as kinky
- 22:11as the are believable couple which is quite saying something,
- 22:16when she's a lizard, I'm awful Isn't human relations, you know,
- 22:20honestly very nice time with a salamander once, you know.
- 22:30You know what I saw was very strange, as you just said
- 22:32something negative about this episode and I'm about to say
- 22:34something positive. I feel as if we're reversing
- 22:36roles boy oh boy the production value on this thing is pretty
- 22:40decent. Yes, because he's what he asks
- 22:44is for there to be a myriad of locations, a huge guest cast,
- 22:49like I think we can see now. Why Curse of the Black Spot look
- 22:51so cheap because because I was saving the money for this one,
- 22:56but the money's on the screen. Yeah.
- 22:59Yeah. I think As more time goes on.
- 23:01I realized I just, I almost like dr.
- 23:04Light episodes because like this.
- 23:07And I've just done the Crimson arrow on Kettle with a string.
- 23:10And the doctor is not in them for like 15 minutes.
- 23:14And I love that build-up. And that question of worry is,
- 23:19I'll play as you want. You give me these openings
- 23:21honestly. Matt Smith's 94, 15 minutes.
- 23:24Happy Days. Yeah, but makes it so good when
- 23:26he turns up. Okay, well, Ashley Don't say
- 23:30it's a positive. Now course, happen to me, the
- 23:33Headless monks, right? I did.
- 23:35But this is indicative of the problem again, because it's a
- 23:38great idea, that's worth exploring and there's no time to
- 23:41explore it. Yeah it's just like krumins gets
- 23:46ideas into the script. It's like in.
- 23:48Let's kill Hitler. I was watching earlier in
- 23:51between swearing. I was saying things like the
- 23:55tesselecta, such a great idea. Why on Earth that I should have
- 24:00been the whole story? You could have said it in the
- 24:02test lecture and found out about like and what it does is he
- 24:04throws away so many Fantastic ideas.
- 24:08I think it is a sort of driven by what's going to be the next
- 24:13History. What do we need to set up for
- 24:14the future? Well, I'll send just focusing on
- 24:17what the story is now, too much. Mmm, and I tell you something,
- 24:21now that's going to stun you rigid.
- 24:23Oh go on. Then you ready for this?
- 24:25It's your fancy Jenny. I'm a heterosexual.
- 24:28Matt. No no, that's why it's no
- 24:31definitely not. Oh yeah, I do think I see I'm
- 24:35warming to the paternoster gang. I don't know how but I think
- 24:39come the Crimson Horror. I'm and deep breath.
- 24:44It's a shame. They ditch their dicks from the
- 24:47show at that point often like other gone because that first 15
- 24:50minutes of the Crimson Aura, it's the best part of crimson
- 24:53Aura. Maybe there's so much fun.
- 24:57There's so much for. I don't know how much more you
- 25:00could do with them though after deep breath.
- 25:02And I say that as someone who's got all the big fish boxes for
- 25:06like it's 30 70 times Jerry could go.
- 25:08Oh this is my wife and Jackson go.
- 25:11Yes boy I mean, girl, some people say that about Django, a
- 25:14lot of it, you know, and then 13 series later.
- 25:17Yeah, I think I'll be proven wrong if I want this.
- 25:19I know if they turned up in which she got will be all over
- 25:22it. So Okay.
- 25:24So we've got the first appearance of Strax here.
- 25:28The sontaran nurse controversial at the time was today, very
- 25:32much. So and I I'm so conflicted
- 25:36because I think Dan Starkey is very Charming, but I also think
- 25:40that sometimes are now a joke. It's one sons are in the day,
- 25:45but then there's always a joke like they were the butt of the
- 25:50jokes in the two doctors. They were generally the butt of
- 25:53the jokes in invasion of time. Yeah, I think this is come from
- 25:57people who read like The 90s novels where they were having
- 26:00massive space. Worsley brutality, doctors, yes,
- 26:03all that and the invaded Gallifrey.
- 26:05So obviously the one of the big ones, but they weren't meant to
- 26:08be a joke on imperialism at the time.
- 26:10In the time, Warrior always meant to be.
- 26:13A bit for me, it's just take it to the extreme.
- 26:15How can you not get? Which is so silly.
- 26:17Here's a toad, who knows what I told thinks?
- 26:21Yeah. I mean you're gonna be you're
- 26:23gonna be a bit miserable Tonight.
- 26:24George Jackson. I know everything he says, is
- 26:26funny, but like, easy and enjoyable watch.
- 26:29I'll say this. Yeah, I think he's responsible
- 26:32for the best and worst comedy moment in the new series
- 26:35genuinely often the best comedy bone, but the made me laugh so
- 26:39much it's when he Froze that paper yes the he's favorite And
- 26:43the worst is some joke. Oh, God is there?
- 26:47Yes, it's only compelled. Competition is the Wi-Fi family
- 26:53for retina. Yeah.
- 26:56Yeah though it's on the same level though.
- 26:58Why don't we stop the episode. So we could say, we could have
- 27:01had a reunite real reunions between Thomas Thomas and the
- 27:05Wi-Fi, family, we got Rory, talking some Vivir, asking it.
- 27:12Help the Doctors are me. It seems you 10.
- 27:14Not the idea of the storm cage. Yeah.
- 27:17Stargate specificity outside. No, you just see this one
- 27:21Corridor. That's a shame.
- 27:23I just keep following the same cell even though she escapes
- 27:27every week. I think that's the basement of
- 27:29Debenhams in Cardiff, you know? So when this episode went out
- 27:36like we were, I watch this at Chris's house.
- 27:38It was great. It was around Chris's birthday,
- 27:40my co-host from Lost on Gallifrey.
- 27:42There was low It was like 10 of us.
- 27:44Why we would have been 15 14 15 and it was just like, who is
- 27:49your son going to be? So I think we all are a lot of
- 27:53this plot was just going over our heads.
- 27:54We were just going through the usual where you Romana Susan.
- 27:57Oh yeah, that's fully told someone at school.
- 28:01It was see. It was Susan.
- 28:03There was no there is no going back.
- 28:05I almost would have been fun when they're right if she had
- 28:08been. Yeah.
- 28:10Because that day of the Moon and Sun that little Girls we
- 28:13generated and this girly, just it was just watched Doctor Who
- 28:17we just say, well, that's going to be with a song, isn't it?
- 28:19In our psyche? Now don't be silly, that's
- 28:21season Susan's back. I've got two questions for you
- 28:25about River Song. Okay.
- 28:27Number one, is that do you object to fucking in the Tardis?
- 28:31No way. No.
- 28:32She because mine it's not. It's time to have a tardis here.
- 28:35Let's go. No, my general question.
- 28:37The second question is Why does having sex in the Tardis?
- 28:45Make a Time Lord, baby. I don't know an MBA, but did not
- 28:50find it this way. Now whilst I'm coming soon from
- 28:55Denny pass the Timeless child. Hey, I don't.
- 29:02Yeah, it's just a wee bit of exposition, but I'd rather it
- 29:05just be a quick line than anything jogged out.
- 29:09What I mean it allows him to do lots of like tricks and and
- 29:13cheese and things, doesn't it? Yeah, because it's not fully
- 29:15explained, so it's just the Duration at the end of day of
- 29:18the Moon, obviously you get the resolution to, let's kill
- 29:21Hitler. You get the big twist in the
- 29:23middle of let's kill Hitler. Yeah, he does do stuff with it,
- 29:28but it's like here's the idea you've just got to accept it.
- 29:33It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
- 29:34Well, at the time it was a bit cooler as well because there
- 29:38wasn't any other time Lords around.
- 29:40But now we've got Gallifrey back in their field.
- 29:42But at this point in time, you had River Song, the doctor and
- 29:45the master hanging around in the back.
- 29:47So she was effectively this the only other time.
- 29:50Lord, I fucking loved or him. Track is a city fantastic.
- 29:56I loved him right because I do like these sort of buffoonish
- 29:59character to be a bit of garam from the Rebus.
- 30:03Operation is Big over-the-top character.
- 30:05Yes. Yeah but the pic where he goes
- 30:08Doctor, Who Doctor, Who mana mana, wanted to eject that head
- 30:12into the noise? Well, that the bit in this way
- 30:15goes, don't kill me. Me I'm fat, I'm glue.
- 30:21That could be. There is a portion of the
- 30:23audience you know that our way into take those lines and take
- 30:26them very offensive. I know bye.
- 30:29Honey. I think she's a really decent
- 30:33villain. Yeah, like I think she's a bit
- 30:34creepy and Frances Barber who I believe may have been canceled
- 30:38these days. Yeah, I think so.
- 30:40Also unusual opinions. And yeah, that's pretty much
- 30:43everyone is fighting recently. So I think if you're famous now,
- 30:46you're The caveat that they may be cancelled one day.
- 30:51She already got really weird to see.
- 30:53We don't know that. Anything is shame that is too
- 30:56big a show. It's just she like half ties in
- 31:00with the River Song and moffatt's just bored.
- 31:03He's got no new ideas for. So we don't really ever know why
- 31:06she wants to kill the doctor so badly.
- 31:08We get a quick one liner in the Time of the Doctor where they
- 31:11go. Oh, well, the curve, Orion arm
- 31:14of the cylons people is that it That's the fact that blueberry
- 31:18must say. Again, I'm sure he says at the
- 31:20end. Like okay, so the yeah, no,
- 31:24that's sorry. The Time of the Doctor, the time
- 31:26the doctor. Yeah.
- 31:27But I think the time is up to the story is not really about
- 31:30that, is it? But it was the title up before
- 31:32Capaldi comes in but he's got a just do it in this.
- 31:35Massive Exposition scene between I'd rather that a Java at least
- 31:40have one line then what chip normal did with time.
- 31:43This children gone through all of this for a day Position
- 31:47saying in the last episode yet, but we went through all of the
- 31:50time, these children and for w there's naughty we don't even
- 31:53get Allied for that. It's just a fob.
- 31:55Watch chucked into a big. Yeah, they're quick peek into it
- 31:57in Once Upon Time. And another stories we never
- 32:02fabulous Barbara Flynn and a big red tree.
- 32:05Yeah. And she does nothing.
- 32:07She says you're weak field. She just stands there lectures
- 32:09to that. So I mean, how dare you then the
- 32:13big blue man comes along and wipes away leaves mark.
- 32:17Oh my God, little bit when it comes in and goes down Lewis
- 32:21it's okay, I love it so much. It's happily take them back to
- 32:27the best parts. Looks, I think and the sun songs
- 32:30were good. He is Lorna bucket.
- 32:32Now before her untimely demise in this episode, she's got the
- 32:37baby cloth in our and that will hold the key.
- 32:41What is interesting about her is we find out more about other
- 32:43than the key players in this season?
- 32:47Sweetheart. She's very sweet.
- 32:49I like the performance? Yeah.
- 32:51Anytime you get a sweet almost companion.
- 32:54Like girl you know what's coming?
- 32:56You're in trouble. Yeah.
- 33:01What's your name? Boy, you seem very sweet.
- 33:04That's the hardest one. Even to this day to take.
- 33:08You know what? The fact that I mention her on
- 33:09pretty much every episode of happy, I still can't let that
- 33:12one go. Yeah she still she just sticks
- 33:14there. Okay, what's going on now?
- 33:20Oh, I feel like the characterization of the
- 33:25beginning, is a bit tough and I feel like the characterization
- 33:29of the doctor as this like, everyone's scared of him, he's
- 33:32putting together this big army and there's massive armies that
- 33:35are scared of him. It's a bit tough.
- 33:38And I feel like, poor old Amy who's been a ganger for our Four
- 33:42Season, the characterization of Amy's a bit tough, but they all
- 33:47come together towards the end of this episode, right?
- 33:49And I'm like, yes, there it is. That's the fucking chemistry
- 33:53that these free have when they all come together in demons rum.
- 33:57It's wonderful. Yeah, I think that that's where
- 33:59you can tell like the the they are Grill because actors because
- 34:04they don't particularly need the best writing.
- 34:07So give that warmth and joy that comes over this B.
- 34:11Great Colonel well, run away is Colonel Manson's about son Hood
- 34:16the A monks and we know which ones there's well, I do believe
- 34:22though, there are occasions, you know, where the doctor may have
- 34:25risen higher than this and sunk a bit lower as well.
- 34:28I mean, he tried to strangle Perry in the Tardis.
- 34:32So you know what it is though? It can't rise.
- 34:35Highest than ever in a one part cement.
- 34:39Do you know? That sounds so silly, but like
- 34:41I'm one for hyperbole but I believe Steven Moffat is as
- 34:44well. We like you, we Definitely seen
- 34:47a rise how and it's like, any big thing that happens in a one
- 34:50part. It can't be that big because
- 34:52it's not too far sir. And the fact that I call it
- 34:55this, yeah, you've got this voiceover of Alex Kingston
- 34:58saying death. The Battle of demons run and is
- 35:00basically a shootout 42 minutes. Yeah.
- 35:04And it's all in a small room and yeah.
- 35:06But you know what? If it is had 26 million.
- 35:09Disney plus budget. Yeah.
- 35:12And you can understand the Poetry, the going forth.
- 35:16Yeah. Yeah, and you know what, those
- 35:17who's always had to do this? Is that to make compromises and
- 35:20do it with the dialogue with the budget doesn't speak?
- 35:22Yeah, you can understand like he's done it without without any
- 35:26blood spilt and it's meant to be a big army base, but yeah, it's
- 35:30a bit hyperbole to say the greatest ever.
- 35:33Yeah, I think, if I went on to RuPaul's Drag Race, I'll
- 35:37probably do Madame kovarian, you know?
- 35:38With the eye patch. I think I can pull that off
- 35:40really well. Yeah.
- 35:43It's it's a shame because it is that sort of thing that like to
- 35:46See, big finish Explore More but isn't going to happen.
- 35:49No, I like, you know, even if it's not an order yeah some of
- 35:54these Moffat stories would benefit so much like a Target
- 35:57novel, but they're coming out, like it's the time of the doctor
- 36:00or this or something. That there's so much to mine in
- 36:03it. That would be great as an awful.
- 36:06Other this unfortunate position. Oh, I'll tend to like all these
- 36:08characters that are played by actors that end up being
- 36:11canceled. So, I really like Kristoff's
- 36:14character in The Jody with career, or.
- 36:16Well, I'm not Not like him anymore, am I?
- 36:17Yeah, is character is good, isn't it?
- 36:20I'll tend to enjoy Gareth Roberts episodes while though.
- 36:23I'm told, I'm not as a lot, those anymore over, you are
- 36:26allowed to like them all. Thank you very much because I do
- 36:28that. What's the best part apart from
- 36:31the caretaker? You know, that's not the best
- 36:42but it's all going on there. Headless monks Farm.
- 36:47No, but I'll say, okay, we have just said, yeah, this is that
- 36:50the battles done on a small scale?
- 36:52I'll still feel. We've said we have seen a lot of
- 36:54money on the screen. Yeah.
- 36:57It's I think because it's sometimes, because it's on sets
- 37:00and it's dark, it doesn't seem like they spent that much money,
- 37:02but the atmosphere is definitely the.
- 37:05You what is very weird is, okay? You've got a curse on a black
- 37:09spot, which is basically plunged Into Darkness.
- 37:13Then you've got the doctor swallow.
- 37:15This is my Into Darkness. Got the rebel flesh.
- 37:18And the almost people, which is the dreariest looking Doctor.
- 37:20Who story ever. Yeah, well, this and this is no
- 37:23lie. This is my biggest problem with
- 37:2536, honestly, because when I think about it, I don't want to
- 37:28put it on because it just seems so dark.
- 37:31Well that even after that, you got nice literally dog.
- 37:34Yeah literally. But like it just doesn't seem an
- 37:37appealing aesthetic to put on when I went to the girl who
- 37:40waited. And it was in that space
- 37:41station, that was all bright and those lovely bright Gardens.
- 37:44I'll thank God for this. Yeah.
- 37:47And like that's why the impossible after day the moon
- 37:50just stands out because it's this big orange button and
- 37:52Cinder thing at the beginning of the season.
- 37:54I will say, you don't know, I was a little critical that I do.
- 37:58I'm not that Keen on it, but not visually looks amazing.
- 38:02One of the best is by the we're, but at the beginning of day of
- 38:06the year, one of the best, it's though that's a cinematic.
- 38:09Our fingers Doctor Who's ever got.
- 38:11Yeah, I think so. It's well, what do you think of
- 38:13this scene? Where he's saying we are not
- 38:16filled to make it up? Disarm the guns.
- 38:19Say that again. Look at him anthems day and we
- 38:22are not fills and make everyone disarm the guns.
- 38:27No, no, it's great. You know what, a friend of mine,
- 38:33the fabulist even be from new to.
- 38:36He says, that he thinks that this entire story could be
- 38:39salvaged. If it was all about Colonel
- 38:43runaway. And that story was told and I
- 38:45don't think that's wrong. I would be an interesting.
- 38:48There was yeah, yeah. You could just focus it a bit
- 38:52more, controversial opinion, Para, Her like that Silo rien
- 38:57redesigned. You know, me too.
- 38:59I don't see the issue with it and like, you know, the mass of
- 39:02the black eyes. Yeah, they're creepy.
- 39:05We're in the modern day, I think it's great to have like, hey I
- 39:09watch so much 70s TV, you know sometimes I wonder Olga, I'll
- 39:17spare me. This is a boy from picture is
- 39:20italics good. We get everything wheeled out of
- 39:22the doctor. He stopped covered though.
- 39:24We got judoon silurians even hot Gator sees out, come on, come
- 39:30on. Well how is that moment what's
- 39:33wrong? It's just bringing all his
- 39:35friends alone. I mean victory of the Daleks did
- 39:38that leave an ugly taste in your mouth.
- 39:42Not ugly, it's just a bit empty, isn't it?
- 39:44So that's the end. Oh God, that's ugly taste in my
- 39:47mouth. I'll tell you what a bitch,
- 39:48really Alex beats them all really like that.
- 39:53How empty that Dalek spaceship is just reminds for the second
- 39:56half of the episode. It's just, it's all very Hollow
- 39:58at the end, but like this, like look at the lighting here
- 40:02compared to that spaceship in Victory of the Daleks like as a
- 40:05bit of effort in this and there. Yeah, it's not just a white
- 40:08room. Yeah, that's it stocked up on
- 40:10jail. Is look, we've got a nice green
- 40:12effect going on here. See I just I just it's the
- 40:18pirate from Curse of the Black Spot.
- 40:20What what did it reminds of all the good episodes?
- 40:23Instead of the shit ones to know the issue is though is that we
- 40:27saw this seven episodes ago in the pandorica and it was done a
- 40:30million times better. Can I say that?
- 40:33So, come on. What it does.
- 40:34This several times, doesn't it as a title sequence going from
- 40:38location to location to location, building up to that
- 40:42one in the pandorica, opens This is fucking Sublime.
- 40:47Yeah, and I get a think it's way.
- 40:48He pulls together that whole season in five minutes.
- 40:52Yeah. When he, this is the most
- 40:55dramatic sniff in history. That's
- 41:12the best anger. Just don't buy it.
- 41:14Oh, I'd say I'd say but I could understand because people think
- 41:18McCoy is good at I'm going. I just can't buy that song.
- 41:21Oh, evil saves a lot of time. He's channeling mature mature
- 41:25boy. There will be no, no Joyce
- 41:34worst. Bit is when he's angry is what
- 41:36he says. The river in Asia was like
- 41:37Manhattan. You embarrass me River while
- 41:40it's hot. I always feel like I'm in an
- 41:42episode of EastEnders. I hate that scene.
- 41:45I just hate. I said, you know what?
- 41:49I think this quiet anger. Like it's just a little bit
- 41:51about best, but that quiet angry does and the manipulation behind
- 41:55the eyes, I think. He's so well.
- 41:56You know what? Is lovely about talking to you
- 41:59about this is that I do like this, but I've already named
- 42:05about 15 things. I admire in it and you do like
- 42:10this era a lot, but you're happy to say the things that you think
- 42:14that I work. And I think that's the best kind
- 42:17of Doctor Who conversation because I sat in here with me,
- 42:20just say this shit a nudist. And on Twitter, you know,
- 42:28exactly. But today what hunger?
- 42:32Controversial opinion, pretty much.
- 42:34All of Doctor Who is shit or has things wrong with it and it's
- 42:38and it's just accept the dominators.
- 42:41It's been. Yeah, except it's just how much
- 42:44you enjoy it in yourself. The more you enjoy the voyage
- 42:47you overlooked it or you recognize it and go.
- 42:50That's fine. I don't really care.
- 42:51Have you heard of a review site called doc?
- 42:54Oh ho reviews. Doesn't mean.
- 42:57A bell. Oh, okay.
- 42:58Well it's there's one out there right written by a very studious
- 43:03intelligent fellow and yeah, but whenever I gave a 10 out of 10,
- 43:08it was never because it was Flawless, it was because of my
- 43:12reaction to watch it how much I enjoyed it.
- 43:15Yeah, exactly. Because I don't think there's a
- 43:17piece of Television that is Flawless and and there's so many
- 43:21things that it can depends on if you really liked it.
- 43:24I know for a fact, the ones that I have Joy.
- 43:27Don't First, Watch whether that be because there's people in the
- 43:30room or any sort of external factors I struggle to enjoy.
- 43:34Like, I'm a lot more on the we watch, because you have that
- 43:37initial memory and same vice versa, Rebel.
- 43:40We do like, yeah, I loved rings of akhaten when I watched it on
- 43:44TV and then everyone tells me it's shit and then you just love
- 43:47it even more because you just think about it.
- 43:49Just takes you back to that. First time you watched it and no
- 43:51one said a thing but also, it's quite fun to be contrary as
- 43:55well. Doctor.
- 43:59And then you I genuinely I is not what?
- 44:01He's not my favorite. I think it's the worst he's down
- 44:06there but up here. It's twice.
- 44:08As long as you say it is. It's genuine and true to
- 44:10yourself. I think it's very interesting
- 44:13conversation. I did I did like a town called
- 44:15mercy and I pointed out several scenes and that where I think is
- 44:18probably the best active, the doctors ever been.
- 44:20So it's not like, I think he's always terrible.
- 44:22Why? It's just not for me.
- 44:24Yeah, if you got like a particular Shit.
- 44:27Because I series five months left for me is just don't be so
- 44:31sure. I like to know what, I actually
- 44:33think his my favorite Matt Smith episode is worse is to back to
- 44:38back. It's Vincent and the doctor and
- 44:42the lodger oh, okay. In Just Cause I just think he's
- 44:46so gentle and sweet and such a lot and but hopefully it's not
- 44:52easy, but be aware he goes up and he does the air kisses man.
- 44:56Oh man. Man, I'll bend him over
- 44:58backwards. He said he's such a ladder
- 45:02logic. That was well yeah, is always
- 45:05been skinny though. I would.
- 45:09Oh hi, so much. You know, it's really dull.
- 45:34How cool is it at the time when he got this cut out the Tardis?
- 45:38Yeah. Because it was just mysterious a
- 45:41name is asking him if he's had kids.
- 45:43This is I'm off at last to do, do realize to delve into the
- 45:45doctors childhood us. I don't watch this.
- 45:48This is a nice touch, but the bit in listen where we go to his
- 45:51bedroom in the barn and well, we're not, we're not doing
- 45:53listen yet. I just feel like something
- 45:56should to be a mystery, you know.
- 46:00No, that's a lot more invasive because the thing about the time
- 46:09his children is yeah it tells you a lot but it also tells you
- 46:12very little and allotments left is pointless.
- 46:16Where's at least in listen if thematically see ties into
- 46:20everything about fear and that's where we've been told so much
- 46:24about the doctor that suddenly has a layer of mystery about
- 46:28what happened. Not a mystery because no one
- 46:30cares. It's only Mischief people care
- 46:32about other people do. That's easy.
- 46:34You don't care. It's just 20 in the face and
- 46:38tell him rays are coming for you now.
- 46:40It's just 20 random phases. Do you really care about the
- 46:45scan field? Dr. Always Center.
- 46:48Moffett was like the wonky astok.
- 46:49Surely put any I'll reference in any dolls boy, does he but when
- 46:56Chris chibnall made an excuse for the morbius.
- 46:59It says to be it, I was like, wow, you've got it, you follow
- 47:02my other Moffat. Well, you know what?
- 47:06That Exposition dump in the middle that episode.
- 47:08Oh well, this is interminable, never come back, but don't blame
- 47:12you. I don't like the proper
- 47:14PowerPoint presentation, isn't it?
- 47:17Okay, so where are we now? Back in the command go.
- 47:18So they look at the killer. Yeah, he's never risen higher.
- 47:22So they've saved the baby and everyone sort of gone.
- 47:24This is yes, but it's still 10 minutes left.
- 47:27So look Malloy. I'm gonna introduce you now to
- 47:30the very worst moment in Doctor Who or one of them, and I
- 47:33genuinely think is the most tonally irresponsible moment in
- 47:38Doctor Who when the baby turns into sick.
- 47:41One we shouldn't be killing babies and dogs, who that is not
- 47:44good. And unfortunately, put jack,
- 47:48Shanahan in the unfortunate position.
- 47:49When we did this on the line, want to be praised to admit that
- 47:52he fingers, killing babies in dramas and to, I think Karen
- 47:57Gillan is such a good. Actress and there are several
- 48:01moments in Doctor Who where I think the actresses are putting
- 48:03appalling. It's Tina lievable own.
- 48:06Well I'm like this is a very uncomfortable to watch.
- 48:11I mean, as a fourteen-year-old, we just all burst out laughing
- 48:15when it turned into go. So that's just a now.
- 48:20Now, it's not as funny but it is quite funny.
- 48:23Obviously, rather baby. If you had a baby.
- 48:26No, that's baby. But like I think you can
- 48:29separate the fact it's fiction and it's not a baby.
- 48:31It's a it reality. It's a load of white.
- 48:34Gu think? I think it's what makes a baby
- 48:37what I said in the past. Is I just think when you're
- 48:39going to batter Doctor Who into A shape where we are.
- 48:42Fucking in the Tardis where we're killing babies.
- 48:46Well, we're, we're killing the companions.
- 48:48The doctors and I'm just like, is this a place I want to be?
- 48:51Not really but yeah, I think at the time, why did I feel like
- 48:54Doc's who was going like missing the mark a little bit?
- 48:58I think when he gets like this age that is the reason it's
- 49:02because it's just not, right? It's not just not what we talked
- 49:04to who should be doing. Well it's all sort of Game of
- 49:07Thrones s shock boners, isn't it?
- 49:10Yeah. And I mean It's tying into what
- 49:13was bigger the time, obviously, which is like, which was our key
- 49:17things. Yeah.
- 49:18Eric input. And gave her friends was eyes
- 49:20Hawaii at this point. I think, wasn't it?
- 49:23Oh, I don't know. Yeah, that I'm not the biggest
- 49:24fan, but I think it was definitely around resetting
- 49:28itself. You know, it was big Cliffhanger
- 49:30endings and I used to joke about and Series 6 that the episodes
- 49:36were so terrible. People will convince her grave
- 49:38because the Cliffhangers are so good killing Amy with Either
- 49:41being revealed, it's not achieve your end, it on a high people.
- 49:44Do forget what happens in the 30 minutes before.
- 49:47Nice hilarious thing about closing time is honoring of a
- 49:49big fan of closing time, but the ending so great.
- 49:52Where River being taken away, it almost makes you forget about
- 49:56the previous 42 minutes. Yeah, you prefer the lunches are
- 50:02closing time. Yes, yeah, no, no.
- 50:05I think I can't remember what I did on my blog but I think
- 50:07you're a dick close to each other.
- 50:09I think one just edges the other Yeah, I do.
- 50:12I do really like I feel like it's gonna avoid the Shakespeare
- 50:16code, but we love the shaykh Speak.
- 50:17Oh yeah. I have to be in the mood to
- 50:19watch it with me because it's so accessible.
- 50:22It's the most accessible bit of Doctor Who H, just, which is,
- 50:25and Shakespeare, and of could draw a minute Expelliarmus.
- 50:28Luke, oh no, she's been canceled as well with the barge.
- 50:35But you know what? It's very tricky watching.
- 50:37The series 1 now you know, with no clog, John Barrowman and
- 50:41Bruno Langley. I'll support John.
- 50:44Bowne it. So I I've got there's a podcast
- 50:48coming out on the time last year when we really delved into it up
- 50:52and watching their back, catalog is a brilliant and we did
- 50:56Revolution of the Daleks and part planet of the Daleks back
- 50:59to her and the revolution Dan our criticizing revolution of
- 51:03the Daleks I could you not love that bit on the bridge?
- 51:07Where Christoph is like I will be the rule.
- 51:11ER of the Dalek is great. This is great but it was very.
- 51:15There's controversial characters, it isn't it.
- 51:18But the Barrowman thing we really had a good chat about and
- 51:20yeah not really I wouldn't come spring.
- 51:23He's like okay, I don't get cancelled when I say this, I
- 51:26mean I'll have been known to get my penis out but I tend to do it
- 51:30in private with the person I'm about to make love to a not in
- 51:36Social again, he's a slut. I think it can be funny.
- 51:40I don't think there was ever a proper complaint.
- 51:43I don't it. They usually put it away in
- 51:45place while you're saying that. Sorry the usual things confirm.
- 51:50Oh well if I did it, work at get sucks.
- 51:52Totally misses the point that the working in TV and like, the
- 51:55constantly getting changed and stuff, it's always say, it's a
- 52:00can of worms and we did that. We did it on there.
- 52:02There's no point to it. Strangely enough, never not
- 52:04funny man, goes to war. Well, actually funnily enough,
- 52:07it was meant to be in this, wasn't he?
- 52:09Captain. Jack will see, he was.
- 52:11Yeah and scan it at that. Yeah, yeah, yeah schedule and
- 52:15stopped him being in it. But he for some reason thought
- 52:17Moffitt stopped and being event, even though my fitted actually
- 52:20invited him. So as you know, he can be no do
- 52:24better for our more online Connie I can.
- 52:26Yeah, so if I think from this point onwards, all about it,
- 52:30with Eve Myles, I think, did he think that she was going
- 52:35backward, search with spin off without him?
- 52:37And I think you just heard that was big finish.
- 52:39Shhhh and you don't even talk about it right now.
- 52:50I'll be back when I can process this whole thing harder our own,
- 52:55I've just had to do so desperate I can't even talk about it.
- 52:58It's like what are you know someone's leaving at work on the
- 53:01way like that? Okay we're about to get go baby
- 53:07then come baby, come on baby, come on baby.
- 53:11Come back to me when I did Rebel fresh a little most people have
- 53:13all that come flying about. God I need to go back.
- 53:17This is the it was. I'll tell you what, he waited a
- 53:20bold attempt. Dave Barry come on me, though,
- 53:24right? Because I put our Twitter polls
- 53:25saying, right, do you like this or not?
- 53:28Yeah, and some people said yes. A more people said yes the no
- 53:34but the biggest bulk about 80% said, I'm ambivalent and he took
- 53:40that as a success. I was like again with like you
- 53:46know this is repeating a bit of the pandorica.
- 53:48I think the issue with Revell flesh almost people is that it's
- 53:50repeating The Silo into bar to that just went before.
- 53:53It's the exact same story but with worst monsters fucking
- 53:57boring as well. But it but it is it's about you
- 54:00know that coming or Great fabulous, countdown, 100 120,
- 54:06it's low. Its may I say everybody, please
- 54:09go and find Luke's countdown on Lou.
- 54:12Will you put a link in when I yet, please do it is one of the
- 54:16most. Now, you shut up for a second is
- 54:19one of the most well, considered critiques of the new series that
- 54:24I have read with you. Look at things in surprising
- 54:28ways, and you make me think about episodes in ways that I
- 54:31would. Normally I think it's fabulous.
- 54:33Go read it everybody. Thank you.
- 54:36Yeah, I did. He spend time at showing find a
- 54:38different angle but not one word like sacrifice and the honesty
- 54:42of myself whilst also tried to cover the good bits.
- 54:46But yeah, it takes ages to I'm going to be so proud of it when
- 54:49it's done. I stay.
- 54:51It feels like I'm getting close now because like I'm near 50 but
- 54:54actually it still say long to go.
- 54:56It's an episode was at the time of children now, Battle of an
- 54:59Scott Raab. No, no.
- 55:01Because I see, Just did Capaldi to Accent apology because I
- 55:06thought, I don't want to spend time writing about things that I
- 55:09don't particularly enjoy nothing that and that's, that's, that's
- 55:13an unpleasant decision actually. Yeah.
- 55:16Otherwise, because the first couple of Articles were just
- 55:18turn their phone off with me going.
- 55:20Like, I don't like it. Come, baby.
- 55:21Oh my God. Look at Karen gillan's face.
- 55:23Yes, they will. I mean, fucking absurd and she
- 55:27sells it. It's too good.
- 55:30This is why she's gone on to have a I said, movie career, you
- 55:33know, she might be in blue latex or whatever she's wearing, but
- 55:38yeah, no, she's in the big bucks now.
- 55:40She's brilliant and it's, although I don't like
- 55:43particularly like or like love Rory, this episode I do like
- 55:47watching them grow. So by the time he leaves I
- 55:50really like you. Yes, I think after will has that
- 55:54effortlessly sort of likable. Yes.
- 55:57Acting like I just can't not enjoy it when it's not the
- 56:01screen. I really haven't told my food.
- 56:04I really wanted a doctor named. He just them together at the
- 56:07beginning and by the end you just can't imagine it without
- 56:10worrying. That I always forget, Shacks
- 56:13dies here. You know what occurs here?
- 56:16How does he like a mini episode? A two-minute mini-episode.
- 56:24I just see do this second though.
- 56:26I don't know. I don't know what I've been
- 56:28asking that question for ages. And you know what else, what do
- 56:32you killed, all those good. And then she was Again.
- 56:35Yeah, you know that one pisses me off more because that was
- 56:38such a shocking moment of saying, oh my God made us never
- 56:42scarier than that moment now. And it made me see so scary and
- 56:45let's be honest we never needed seals because again so it was
- 56:48perfect and then suddenly there was to ever know, we did notice
- 56:53it also quit again because the thought of Jemma Redgrave
- 56:55spearhead in those units, SI is some ambulance, te Kyle, tell
- 57:00you, how is she back every like Doctor Who fan that I have
- 57:03respect for? For we all say the same thing
- 57:06that she's so dull you have respect for me.
- 57:11I do. There's no way you're going to
- 57:13turn around so she's good. Now although I think I'm under a
- 57:16of the Dockside, you know why? That one point, she showed an
- 57:19emotion, she screamed her head off, she just the same thing in
- 57:21everything, she's just there. You know what, right?
- 57:25I've got this scary feeling that Billy Gibson is going to turn
- 57:29out, isn't it? It's awesome.
- 57:30Yeah, that's Russell T. Davies thing you can possibly
- 57:34do, isn't it? It's the first Russell T.
- 57:36Davies decision in like the the year that he's been rebate we
- 57:40build a new that I thought. Yes, sure.
- 57:43I'll tell you what is anyone can make it work?
- 57:45Well, it's true. Yeah yeah he could make Jodie
- 57:47Whittaker works. Well well well she's back for
- 57:51the special you'll see that I will be staying.
- 57:54She's backstage after the even though I love dirty bits.
- 57:58That um, apologetically he'll be back in some form of it at some
- 58:03point. She is pure sunshine just like
- 58:06leave it was about to expire right now.
- 58:08If Colin Baker can turn off, he is player.
- 58:12I have no doubt of Jody. You like me?
- 58:14I'll is she came in my pants? When called it was my gun for
- 58:17me? Because I've heard that voice of
- 58:22big finish in my ears for years. And then suddenly he was the
- 58:26joke as well. Why are you wearing that?
- 58:28Yeah, I don't do robes. Yeah, marvelous up to know what
- 58:34man if I did because he's dropped about the spin-offs if
- 58:37they don't do in a Top Spin Off. They are missing a trick.
- 58:41It's a weird one though, isn't it?
- 58:42Like do you do a spin-off Werther's?
- 58:44Adopt, another doctor at the same time you could argue.
- 58:47No because it overshadows or, yes, because we've always had
- 58:50doctors going at the same time. Spin-off done you in tell me you
- 58:53wouldn't be here. Hot Jazz.
- 58:55I was about, mr. What is what we all like?
- 58:57Cynthia? Isn't it actually, you know
- 59:03what, right? I know what time is it now
- 59:04whirring? Oh yeah.
- 59:05We're an alien now and this pit in a minute, right?
- 59:08Where he figures out who she is. Yeah, I've just bitten me.
- 59:12You know, it's hardly like them the hardest cryptic clue ever
- 59:16but his performance when he goes all giggly like a child and I'm
- 59:19like yes that's that serious. 5dr back again for a second.
- 59:23Yeah. Yeah, it definitely is this.
- 59:26We can't underestimate how big this felt the time I honestly
- 59:31it's doesn't seem that big anymore and I think that's the
- 59:34fault of surgery six now in retrospect, but at the time this
- 59:39Revelation that melody was your that was enormous and it was
- 59:42what everyone was waiting for. I don't think it was like sort
- 59:45of water cooler. Like rose going in doomsday was.
- 59:49But in Stockton the circles, I think it was, that's a no, you
- 59:53know, people. I still watched it was it was
- 59:55after this episode were telling, I said, I thought, let's kill
- 59:59Hitler was a point where the right in the Stars, take a
- 1:00:01little bit of a dog it. Well, I think it was the stupid
- 1:00:05decision on the BBC's part and it was Steven Moffat because he
- 1:00:07wanted to bring our whole season.
- 1:00:09Yes, seasons and you can have, it would have been so different
- 1:00:13because this would have been a coherent two parts.
- 1:00:16I'd imagine and well, and you've probably got, let's kill Hitler.
- 1:00:21Yeah, you're kind about the writing there.
- 1:00:24Yeah, I see the point. Yeah.
- 1:00:27Yeah no but I think what's weird in here is all the acting as
- 1:00:32suddenly brought down to a recognizable e you know
- 1:00:35emotional level and I'm suddenly loving all the characters.
- 1:00:39Yeah I mean I don't Mafia doesn't get the credit for her
- 1:00:42Goods years. Emotional writing or a motive,
- 1:00:44right? It's always like always clever
- 1:00:47and he's this and he's that but some of them like emotional
- 1:00:50moments either hit or make you cry.
- 1:00:52It wasn't here. But I do know what I tell me if
- 1:00:56I'm wrong. I think Think Rusty Davis hits
- 1:00:58more than misses, ya think Moffat can hit and miss.
- 1:01:04I so I think personally that will see day was always goes in
- 1:01:09to make the best TV show was Moffat.
- 1:01:12Always goes in to make the best Doctor Who and and that's the
- 1:01:15key right seat. See, this is why you should
- 1:01:18reasons, countdown people. That's a great thought.
- 1:01:20That's the key difference, and that's where Moffat can slip up,
- 1:01:23and it gets a bit too, like gritty or because he's trying it
- 1:01:28purely for the people who were dialed watching it.
- 1:01:30I think what happened is is The Matt Smith ehre, tell me about
- 1:01:36way off base here. The mass media is basically like
- 1:01:40John nathan-turner coming in season. 18, right fresh, bold
- 1:01:43stylish. New Doctor Who.
- 1:01:45And there's a bit of a difference between a life of our
- 1:01:47The Ledger hives. It go go with my energy and then
- 1:01:51we go into the late 80s and we're going into Capaldi's here
- 1:01:54and is suddenly very continuity heavy.
- 1:01:57The doctors. Colin Baker is a bit grumpy and
- 1:01:59unlikable and violent. And people started to No.
- 1:02:04Well, guess what? It got continuity heavy, the
- 1:02:07doctor called grumpy, and people started turning off.
- 1:02:10It's very weird how much modern who follows the pattern.
- 1:02:15So you have Tom Baker, David Tennant as the big popular
- 1:02:18doctor and he got the young Peter Davison, Matt Smith who
- 1:02:22starts off really fresh and Everyone likes it and then it
- 1:02:24gets a bit more thing. And then you've got the
- 1:02:26anniversary and then as you say you have your grumpy, Colin
- 1:02:29Baker, Peter Capaldi continuity, heavy bringing back almost In
- 1:02:33which only, which constrains the Koi.
- 1:02:35No. And then you get Jody with the
- 1:02:36fresh season. 24, season 11. Then season, 25 season 12, you
- 1:02:41got the doctors mystery backstory, Bubba and then even,
- 1:02:44yeah, revolution of the Daleks is, you know, they bring back
- 1:02:48the Brigadier, the bring back Captain jacket follows, a very
- 1:02:51similar pattern off until about flux.
- 1:02:54And then and, you know, it rooms that are believed to be
- 1:02:56believed, might have got canceled, and then history is
- 1:02:59finally going on. It's a new track with Russell T
- 1:03:02coming. Russell Davis is now got a wave
- 1:03:05himself. He's basically it's as if
- 1:03:08Hinchcliffe came back in 89 to would pull my gun.
- 1:03:13Oh my God, I love that. Have you not heard foe from the
- 1:03:18future and the Ghost of growl steadied?
- 1:03:19Still at it? You know, I'm not on the list,
- 1:03:24here we go. Now, the music is the music.
- 1:03:28Yeah, this is Think I'd say want to say that mommy, gold did his
- 1:03:36best stuff in the early, Matt Smith here because there's so
- 1:03:40much good stuff in the days. He did.
- 1:03:43The series 5 soundtrack into Series 6.
- 1:03:51The only thing I've ever learned on a piano, you know.
- 1:03:53Oh, yeah. It's you can just go up and
- 1:03:54down, it goes. Back in, let's kill Hitler.
- 1:04:08Well, all of us at Chris's house just started pissing ourselves.
- 1:04:12We just couldn't stop laughing. Yes, I rather enjoyed watching
- 1:04:17that were you, I know it's we always do this.
- 1:04:19We never talked about it during the first half of what we do
- 1:04:24quite well focusing. Yes, a few times you were like,
- 1:04:28okay, so this is what's happening on the screen and then
- 1:04:30we just went way off piste. Yeah.
- 1:04:32Like it's great, scoffs decent you get.
- 1:04:34It's what you truly want to talk about it.
- 1:04:36Do you remember as well? Sorry, lasting when the episode
- 1:04:39ended in the credits went there was just that little flash of a
- 1:04:43skeleton under the ground with a sonic screwdriver in his hand.
- 1:04:47Do you remember this? No.
- 1:04:49Yeah. So the credits finished and then
- 1:04:51there was just a little like it was implied to be the doctors
- 1:04:55skeleton in the ground and the Sonic Screwdriver is little fin.
- 1:04:58It's like because the doctors meant to be death and it was
- 1:05:01getting was going to come back and Three months time.
- 1:05:03And I always found out that creepy.
- 1:05:06Oh, yeah. Well, you've just identified
- 1:05:08another problem. I've got with Serious Six, you
- 1:05:10know what? The doctors alive?
- 1:05:14That's me. So yeah.
- 1:05:14No, no, it's there is this point.
- 1:05:21I just think there's too much focus on the doctor, and I know
- 1:05:24that's the angle the new series took, but I was very refreshed
- 1:05:28in series 11. When the show just started
- 1:05:31telling stories again and stop being about the fucking doctor
- 1:05:35all the time. Because, like, how, well, Are
- 1:05:36you going to tell us about this guy?
- 1:05:38What you have to do is you have to make it bigger and bigger at
- 1:05:41fruit? So I am.
- 1:05:42And it's like, what is a series? What is it in Series?
- 1:05:456 dr. Doctors going to die, you know,
- 1:05:48and he's got a faces, you know, existential quandary of dying.
- 1:05:51And then in series 7 the doctors going to die.
- 1:05:57It's it's what Moffitt was interested in the story of the
- 1:06:00doctor over the story, the companion and I think as a as a
- 1:06:04fan at that age, A where you start to delve into things that
- 1:06:09that really appeals to me. And now I've got the Nostalgia
- 1:06:11for it and now like they're the ones are love going back to.
- 1:06:14What should I do? I find it.
- 1:06:16That could be my Max, all those doctor, stories night day time,
- 1:06:23and all that. Not, you know, that that should
- 1:06:24have been where that sort of was that was culminated there.
- 1:06:27Yeah. But then called you came along
- 1:06:29with a great fresh start and he's they're sitting in the
- 1:06:31toilets. Go.
- 1:06:32Oh my oh good man. Clara.
- 1:06:34All right. Art box.
- 1:06:35Well so So the but the one I fired the bit unforgivable is
- 1:06:39the series 91, were it starts in the witch's familiar?
- 1:06:43And he's got some professionals about to this day, you know?
- 1:06:46Well he's got his confession dial, he's like I'm gonna die
- 1:06:49and this is my last confession and at that point it's like I'll
- 1:06:52fucking cum on like fine know what the hybrid is.
- 1:06:57What's the doctor and Clara jiving each other to extremes
- 1:07:00that will destroy the universe? It's terrible, but you love it.
- 1:07:14That's one though that I despised on initial viewing and
- 1:07:20now that I watch it and I like it more and more that it feels
- 1:07:23like it's a nice feeling that I'm liking something that I
- 1:07:27didn't in the past. I just don't know how we
- 1:07:30possibly went from. You know, when a truck died?
- 1:07:33Yeah. And the doctor wait, I'll well,
- 1:07:36it's or how sad, but people die. Let's go to the greatest
- 1:07:39exhibition. Come on to, I'm going to tear
- 1:07:43down the entire universe to bring back Clara.
- 1:07:47Clara is a bit different for me but you could argue.
- 1:07:52She's had a bigger impact on his life.
- 1:07:54She was there on the last day of the time War she was there under
- 1:07:56his bed she is I respect all the different things that Moffat try
- 1:08:02Did try a lot of things and he went in a lot of unusual and it
- 1:08:04was always interested. Even if we kicked off, we kicked
- 1:08:09off because it was interested. Can you acknowledge that that
- 1:08:12just might not be for some people all of this I'll guard?
- 1:08:16Yeah, but I think that haste trionic.
- 1:08:18Dram are these crazy arcs that I think that was a somewhat
- 1:08:22unsatisfying Arc. Since I'll always it's
- 1:08:25definitely like, my point of before, is that?
- 1:08:28It is a lot more funds. He likes because he likes
- 1:08:31delving into To the doctor and like that fannish side of
- 1:08:35things. And yeah, the view figures took
- 1:08:37a tumble and even by the time series 10 came along and he and
- 1:08:41he just ignored it just to refresh to slay.
- 1:08:43A lot of people had already gone and you can get them back.
- 1:08:46Well, suppose, the question is should be should Doctor Who be
- 1:08:49for the fans or should it be for everyone?
- 1:08:52So I in my blog I wish I had a big discussion about this in
- 1:08:56about the Shakespeare code because the Shakespeare code I
- 1:08:59think is so accessible. Yeah, it's her.
- 1:09:02A but also its it doesn't like light lit every Cinder in my
- 1:09:08mind. It's not it's not something that
- 1:09:10I think about all the time. It's just a bit of Doctor Who I
- 1:09:13so like yeah, that is the Dilemma is why I think it's the
- 1:09:17makes open its that's so accessible.
- 1:09:20And so like appealing to everyone and it's the biggest
- 1:09:23show ever, or do you want your show to do something a bit more
- 1:09:28experimental than unique and it's chance.
- 1:09:30Get that balance because Better examples of accessory.
- 1:09:33I think unicorn and the WASP is very accessible to the general.
- 1:09:38They laptop because rate and started climbing in for when
- 1:09:41that hit a good went back out to sort of eight million again
- 1:09:44midseason and that never happens because people will Doctor Who's
- 1:09:48doing Agatha Christie with Catherine, Tate amazing.
- 1:09:51I'm going to watch it so you can do it, you can.
- 1:09:54But you'd never get the weirds of parts of say you can get and
- 1:09:59you might you're going to pull faces and be like, oh, I don't
- 1:10:02What very right. But you wouldn't get your
- 1:10:03extremist has or like your lessons or or even like Time of
- 1:10:09the Doctor which, you know, just offer different interesting
- 1:10:13unique things. I don't think you get any of
- 1:10:14them under the accessibility RTD Banner.
- 1:10:18I'll have, you know, I think extremist is brilliant.
- 1:10:24Okay? No, no, no, no.
- 1:10:27All right, you never know, you never know.
- 1:10:34And I do think that he went to some very dark places were in
- 1:10:39advisable book, really interesting.
- 1:10:41You know, don't cremate me the Afghanistan sequences again.
- 1:10:46I don't know if it's appropriate for the dogs who audience with
- 1:10:48kids there, but I do think it was really bold to do it.
- 1:10:52He did this fucking Arc which was in advisable and sprawling
- 1:10:57and probably unsuccessful. But boy he he took Showing like
- 1:11:03really an exciting place. You never came away from this
- 1:11:06art feeling like it was unsuccessful.
- 1:11:08It is messy. No, no.
- 1:11:10Don't get me wrong, it's messy. And it doesn't work when you
- 1:11:15think about it, but I think the show was still quite big and it
- 1:11:18was American and like, people talk about with a song.
- 1:11:21I don't think you ever thought that was unsuccessful as a
- 1:11:24series of Television. It works.
- 1:11:26Maybe it's like from story to point of view, it really
- 1:11:29doesn't. It doesn't really make any
- 1:11:32sense. Sort of sense.
- 1:11:33But well talking about Doctor Who do makes no sense
- 1:11:36whatsoever. Should we go and watch?
- 1:11:39Let's Go. Hitler.
- 1:11:40Yeah. Do we do like three things?
- 1:11:42We liked always saving that all for the other mocking me.
- 1:11:48Well, yes anyway you can bugger someone Ali.
- 1:11:50Yeah. Okay.
- 1:11:51Well if you go the first one is Colonel runaway scene.
- 1:11:57You might not like the explosive anger but I just think it's Say
- 1:12:02good. And then an episode where I
- 1:12:03found sort of shooting each other or talking about war.
- 1:12:06There's just a different way of destroying someone in the, which
- 1:12:11is brilliant and perform, so good.
- 1:12:13I think Madame, kovarian is Camp and wonderful.
- 1:12:18And I like Frances, Bob as performers, I wish there was
- 1:12:21more to. I wish we learn more but I find
- 1:12:24a really fun in the Seas. So yeah, that's my first one.
- 1:12:28Cool. The paternoster gang, the
- 1:12:31introduction of the I'm what an idea.
- 1:12:33It's funny because I'm not really a gang are because like
- 1:12:36it's not like structs is really interact with them and vaster is
- 1:12:39very serious and more of a silo in than she probably will be,
- 1:12:45but inspired idea that when the sort of retooled to come back in
- 1:12:49the Snowman, just set up to be a comedy.
- 1:12:51Little Trio that are brilliant and like it takes it took balls
- 1:12:57to basically take the sontarans and make them into such a comedy
- 1:13:00character. So, And it looking at what works
- 1:13:04here, I think and saying I can do that without.
- 1:13:07Yeah, he's off. So yeah, I'm going to say the,
- 1:13:12it's a bit obvious, but the production value in this because
- 1:13:14I do think Moffat asked a lot, because we go to Victorian
- 1:13:18London, we go to a battlefield. We go to like a bar in outer
- 1:13:22space. We got like, we go to dorian's
- 1:13:24place. We go to Demons, Run, and
- 1:13:26they're all realize, really, really well.
- 1:13:29So, I think that this one time director, Whose name I've
- 1:13:32already forgotten. As she does a pretty decent job
- 1:13:36of putting this all on the screen.
- 1:13:39Yeah. Can't remember either I don't
- 1:13:42think the director for this all let's kill Hitler were around
- 1:13:45very long. I'd have in the market for let's
- 1:13:47go Hitler did another episode but they're not they're not
- 1:13:50names that I have in my head that stick out.
- 1:13:54I'm a third one would be how it how exciting it is.
- 1:13:59Such how exciting it was at the time.
- 1:14:02The Revelation that Melody Pond was River Song and this builds
- 1:14:06up over seven weeks and where the story was going to go, not
- 1:14:11that it necessarily goes in any sort of great Direction, but the
- 1:14:14fact that like you, it gets in that Tardis at the end and you
- 1:14:17have no idea what is coming next apart from that goofy title.
- 1:14:22So it was just, it was a really exciting time, maybe not for
- 1:14:26everyone, but to be the fun that I was, it was a really exciting
- 1:14:30time. My third thing is going to be
- 1:14:34after a half season of generally uninspiring, characterization of
- 1:14:39all three of the regulars. For various reasons, the moment
- 1:14:44where they are all together for the first time, technically,
- 1:14:48because maybe chips out in the impossible planet or day on the
- 1:14:51moon, doesn't she? Yeah, it's just wonderful.
- 1:14:55And that sequence there where they come together and they're
- 1:14:59being cute and a bit shy. And awkward and funny.
- 1:15:03And you can see all the Chemistry Between the lead,
- 1:15:06that's what he takes in series 7 a, which I still think is the
- 1:15:10best run of Mafia episodes, because there is a little less
- 1:15:17safe if that you have no, that's why they're less our key.
- 1:15:20That's why because they're kind of fun, that's why.
- 1:15:25But he takes that, that that scene, I think as a template for
- 1:15:29just sort of how Sweet and lovely.
- 1:15:33This time it's done over five episodes of letting them go in
- 1:15:36series 7, B. It's wonderful.
- 1:15:38I think their chemistry is terrific.
- 1:15:40We don't get enough of it but it isn't.
- 1:15:43Yeah, I agree. Well, I wouldn't do this with
- 1:15:49anybody else. Unless kill Hitler, I've got a
- 1:15:54gun. You've got time machine.
- 1:15:56What the hell? I've got a cupboard.
