- 1:58The Great Lakes Islands Alliance announced its new strategic plan spanning to 2034.
- 2:04The plan looks to address the challenges and opportunities facing Great Lakes Islands.
- 2:08The plan was developed over the last year by the Alliance's leadership team.
- 2:12The four primary goals in the Alliance's foundational charter helped shape the creation of the plan.
- 2:17The four goals are facilitating connection between island communities, improving information
- 2:22access, encouraging multi-island collaboration and amplifying island voices.
- 2:28With the new plan, the Alliance also looks to improve its environmental and socioeconomic
- 2:32program areas, central operations and capacity and long-term sustainability.
- 2:38While mainly focusing on island communities, the Alliance also recognizes the importance
- 2:42of raising awareness of island life among mainland audiences including governments and
- 2:46the general public.
- 2:48The Great Lakes Islands Alliance is set to host its fifth summit this year from September
- 2:5222 to 25, near the Lae-Chanau Islands of Northern Lake Huron.
- 2:56The summit provides an opportunity for islanders from around the Great Lakes to come together
- 3:00to learn about each other's communities and share solutions to the various economic, social
- 3:05and environmental challenges facing islands.
- 3:08This year's event will feature more than 20 speakers, panel discussions and guided tours.
- 3:12The event will cover a range of topics including tourism, island schools, youth engagement,
- 3:18media, biodiversity and emergency preparedness.
- 3:21Member of the Amherst Island Community Alliance David Pickering notes one of the more important
- 3:25issues the island has taken on since becoming a member of the Great Lakes Islands Alliance.
- 3:30One of the things that we've discussed in detail at the Community Alliance was a report
- 3:37from one of the islander islands that actually did an emergency exercise for one of their
- 3:44islands and found that it failed miserably because of poor communications, lack of interoperability
- 3:55and a variety of other things that meant that they couldn't achieve the exercise objectives
- 4:02and it sort of came as a big call to wake up and start over again and come up with a better
- 4:09emergency plan because this didn't work.
- 4:12And certainly that in itself is encouraging the Community Alliance to discuss with the
- 4:22new fire chief as well as the township the state of emergency planning for Amherst Island.
- 4:31Pickering explains how Amherst Island's representative at the Great Lakes Islands Alliance, Paul Juniper,
- 4:36brought back the idea of a winter carnival.
- 4:39Probably the most significant was the entire winter carnival.
- 4:43Paul arrived at one of the meetings for the Community Alliance and said, here is the schedule
- 4:52for the winter carnival.
- 4:55They are now doing their 56th annual one.
- 4:59Maybe we could put something together and the Community Alliance hit the various service
- 5:06organizations like Ames and the Museum and the Women's Institute and so on.
- 5:13And everybody said, well, we can sponsor, support this particular event and they turned
- 5:22around and they made it into a program and they invited people.
- 5:26And apparently it was quite successful.
- 5:30For Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted Evans.

- 5:44The L&A Studio Tour takes place this year, September 7th and 8th from 10am to 5pm each
- 5:50day.
- 5:51This will be the first time studios are hosting live music along with the event.
- 5:54The L&A Studio Tour gives participants the chance to meet artists in their studios and
- 5:58homes, learn about their artistic process and purchase new artwork from the artists.
- 6:03The event features over 32 artists located in 17 studios throughout the county.
- 6:08The L&A Studio Tour is a self-guided tour leading through rural areas with historic
- 6:13towns, villages and hamlets.
- 6:15Amanda Lloyd, one of the owners of the Hive Artist Collective in Bath, notes the four
- 6:19members they'll be featuring in their studio.
- 6:21The L&A Studio Tour is really cool, so they have over 30 artists a part of that program.
- 6:28And so only four of the Hive members will be showing in our gallery.
- 6:34So you'll really get a chance to see a little bit more from myself, Amanda Lloyd, David
- 6:40Slack, Lisa Leskin and Shannon Dickey.
- 6:43Lloyd describes the rest of the weekend and where to find other artists in the county.
- 6:48The rest of the tour, you'll be able to see other Hive artists in their actual studios
- 6:54and other artists, local artists in their studios from NapaNee and from Amherstview,
- 7:02Bath.
- 7:03It's a really, really cool, fun weekend to kind of take a local adventure.
- 7:11Lloyd notes some of the fun activities happening in the studios throughout the tour.
- 7:15You get to meet the artists and all of them have different cool things running in their
- 7:19studios like little raffles and giveaways.
- 7:22And a lot of the studios have music.
- 7:25We have music all day, which is really cool for both days, Saturday and Sunday.
- 7:28Lloyd describes the welcoming nature of artists in their studios.
- 7:32All the artists just love chatting about their art.
- 7:34So it's always fun to have people come in and, you know, we get a chance to talk to
- 7:41the community and get to know us.
- 7:43And yeah, we just want to be, we just want to share.
- 7:47That's all we want to do.
- 7:49For Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted Evans.
- 7:54This is North Shore News.
- 8:04The first ever Bath Art Fest is taking place Saturday, September 14th, hosted by the Hive
- 8:08Artist Collective in Centennial Park. Over 30 artists will be featured from 10 a.m. to
- 8:134 p.m. alongside live music.
- 8:15One of the owners of the hive, Amanda Lloyd, explains how the day will be set up.
- 8:19We're setting it up a little differently than other art festivals.
- 8:22We're calling it kind of like a home village vibe.
- 8:26So all of the tents are going to be on the perimeter of the park and facing the center
- 8:31and then in the center is going to be the music.
- 8:33We're going to have this painting for kids.
- 8:35We have a big raffle.
- 8:36Most of the hive artists have donated a piece to be raffled off.
- 8:41Lloyd describes some of the other types of vendors that will be at the event.
- 8:45We have jewelers.
- 8:46We have ceramists.
- 8:47We have potters.
- 8:49We have some fabric artists too who are going to be there.
- 8:52So you can chop your heart's content there and then maybe wander down into the village
- 8:58for some coffee and some food and some more shopping experience.
- 9:03Lloyd explains the experience they hope to create and notes some of the local businesses
- 9:07involved.
- 9:08It's a village day.
- 9:09That's what we just want everyone to come out and hang out at the village.
- 9:12Have a hang out by the water, you know, to bring the kids down.
- 9:15We really want people to come in, check out local artists, but then take a stroll down
- 9:21to the village because we wouldn't be able to run this without the businesses who kind
- 9:27of have sponsored us.
- 9:29So we're hoping people will go down to the commons, books on mean, the lodge for coffee.
- 9:36Lloyd also noted they hope to make it an annual event.
- 9:38Bath Art Fest will take place rain or shine.
- 9:41For Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted Evans.

- 10:06Panache A as well as workshops for illustration and dreamcatcher making.
- 10:11The Lenox Community Theater will also be there hosting creative activities.
- 10:15This is a free event taking place at Centennial Park North in Bath.

- 10:37Ontario Culinary along with the Culinary Tourism Alliance are hosting a Feast On event featuring
- 10:43six chefs from the area happening this fall at McKinnon Brothers Brewing Company.

- 10:53to 8 p.m.

- 10:59Ontario Culinary says the program recognizes businesses committed to sourcing Ontario-grown
- 11:03food and drink.
- 11:04The other part of their aim is to make it easier for food lovers to find local food.
- 11:09Each chef will be showcasing their creations using seasonal produce and ingredients from
- 11:13the region.
- 11:14The array of different dishes will also be paired with local craft beverages.
- 11:17Marketing manager for the Culinary Tourism Alliance, Gabrielle Mueller, explains the goals
- 11:22behind their Feast On events.
- 11:23The goal really is to celebrate the unique taste of place of southeastern Ontario.
- 11:28All the chefs that are featured at the Feast On the Farm event are Feast On certified.
- 11:34So really we're celebrating chefs that are going the extra mile to source seasonal and
- 11:40Ontario-based produce, meats, and other ingredients.
- 11:44And really we just want to take this time to celebrate that.
- 11:48It's harvest season.
- 11:49It's all you can eat.
- 11:51So inviting folks to come on out and eat and taste how much better things taste when they're
- 11:57in season.
- 11:58Mueller notes the range of local beverages that will be on hand as well.
- 12:01I do want to shout out our local drink producers.
- 12:03Of course McKinnon Brothers Brewing, they're hosting us.
- 12:06So we will be serving up their craft beverages, as well as craft wine from Carlow Estates Winery
- 12:11in Prince Edward County, Hardway Cider, and Mohawk Soda.
- 12:16So it should be a real all around great time.
