Transcript
- 0:06Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of Spider Sound
- 0:09Off. This is Tom.
- 0:10And this is Porter. We are back at Henrico Studios
- 0:13together. We have a a interview we'll be
- 0:16doing in a bit with Coach Roussell from.
- 0:18Excited for Coach Roussell? From the women's team, so
- 0:21that'll be a great interview. 25 and six women's team.
- 0:25You know, had a nice win at Saint Joe's.
- 0:28The men did not have a nice win in Chicago against Loyola.
- 0:33We're not going to spend too much time on that because.
- 0:35Loyola got their seventh win of the season.
- 0:37Yes, and their third in the Atlantic 10.
- 0:39All as good as 7. Yes.
- 0:42So anyway, we don't want to get all upset and mad and then have
- 0:46to jump right to talking to coach Russell and be all
- 0:50exciting. There was a big win last night
- 0:51though. Can we talk about that for a?
- 0:52Second there was. Yeah, there was a big win last.
- 0:54So Tom was up in Northern Virginia for a regional acapella
- 0:58competition and. Not performing in it.
- 1:01No, not in it, not in it. By the way, Tom's never seen
- 1:04Pitch Perfect too. His daughter sings acapella for
- 1:06the JMU Purple Rain Squad, and he's never seen pitch perfect
- 1:10two or pitch perfect one for that.
- 1:11Matter. No, I have not.
- 1:12It's that's just what what's up with?
- 1:14That, but they were at the quarterfinals.
- 1:16This is, well, like real life pitch perfect.
- 1:18They're up at Oakton High School in Vienna and they were the
- 1:23Champs. Gold medal.
- 1:24I think there are 9 total gold Capella groups there, Ellie and
- 1:28her friend Jalen. They also did the choreography
- 1:32for their show and they won best choreography so they got a nice.
- 1:36I'm wondering if we could get the Jamie Purple Rain squad to
- 1:39sing the spider sound off interest song for us so that
- 1:43could become our new well. I, I don't know if we can get
- 1:45them to do it, but I can get AI to do it.
- 1:47So maybe we'll wrap this episode up with a little acapella
- 1:50version of a spider song. Well, Congrats to your daughter,
- 1:52Ellie. That's fantastic.
- 1:53Yeah, they go to the semi finals in Delaware in a few weeks and
- 1:57you win that and then you go to New York's.
- 1:58New York's in it for the for the big finals.
- 2:02But I mean, they're I think they're just super excited right
- 2:05now. So that was fun.
- 2:06Hashtag winning. Yeah, that's right, you know.
- 2:10But anyway, we got. Hopefully they don't come across
- 2:11DAS Sound Machine. I don't know who that is.
- 2:14Well, you should know who DAS Sound Machine is.
- 2:15I guarantee our listeners know who DAS Sound Machine is.
- 2:18OK, Porter likes Acapella way too much.
- 2:21OK, so we'll have coach on in a second if you want to hear a
- 2:25whole lot about the men's team. That won't happen today.
- 2:28We're we're still sad, but hey, on Thursday, the next time we
- 2:33record, we'll have a little more on the women's tournament and
- 2:37we'll also have to focus on the men at some point.
- 2:40But until then, we've got Coach Roussell.
- 2:43Hope you enjoy that interview and we will catch you next time.
- 2:49Well, good morning and welcome to Coach Aaron Roussell from the
- 2:52Richmond Spiders women's team. Coach, congratulations on the
- 2:56big win against Saint Joe's yesterday.
- 2:58Thank you. Appreciate it.
- 2:59As we were just saying it's it's March now.
- 3:01So any win is a big win and obviously good to get back on
- 3:06track a little bit this past week and and head into head of
- 3:10the big tournament here this weekend with hopefully some
- 3:12momentum. You know, I think coach, this
- 3:15might be a big deal for you because I think you're the only
- 3:17two time interviewee on Spider. Sound off so far in this year,
- 3:22So what an honor. Look at that, look at that.
- 3:25We had so much fun that first time.
- 3:27And 1st off, obviously really appreciate what you guys are
- 3:30doing to kind of get get our program out there, get Richmond
- 3:35out there. It it always seems that I'm able
- 3:36to listen to you guys are having a lot of fun with it.
- 3:39So hopefully you're enjoying it. But it is a service to to our
- 3:42program and to rich and spiders everywhere.
- 3:44So thank you. Thank you, coach.
- 3:46We're we're enjoying doing it and we're meeting some fun
- 3:49people along the way. And I mean, obviously when
- 3:51you're 25 and 6 and 37 in the net and this is back-to-back
- 3:56years, you've put together an elite performance, it makes it a
- 3:58lot easier to talk about things day in and day out.
- 4:00So we appreciate you and, and all you're doing for Richmond
- 4:03Spider basketball question for you.
- 4:05So you know, you're, you're in Philadelphia yesterday,
- 4:09obviously back in the RVA today. This is Sunday.
- 4:11We're recording releasing on Monday.
- 4:12How does that, how does the travel work for a game like
- 4:14that? Are you, do you fly back
- 4:15immediately after the game? Do you give a couple hours for
- 4:17the kids? I mean, how's that work?
- 4:19Yeah. Well, first up, normally we, we,
- 4:22I'm going to be embarrassed to say this, but I've been been
- 4:25very fortunate with, with resources here and, and how our
- 4:28administration's taking care of us and that we prioritize this,
- 4:31this trip just to get us back and kind of have a day last
- 4:33night and have a date today. So we did fly.
- 4:37We, we had two kids that had class on Friday until 5:00.
- 4:42So that kind of threw some things off with, with, with
- 4:46being able to drive and obviously getting up there too
- 4:47late. So we did fly up there and then
- 4:49flew back last night. Yeah, we did have some delays.
- 4:53So, but all of a sudden you look down at the clock, by the time
- 4:55you get back to RVA, you're like, let's not do the math of
- 4:58what it would look like if we would have just taken the bus.
- 5:01But a lot of comfort there. You know, we, we had no extra
- 5:04time with the delay to go grab an extra cheese steak.
- 5:07My son and I grab some ice cream and.
- 5:10And, you know, again, obviously you're in Philadelphia and I
- 5:12think a lot of us have connections there, but one
- 5:14pretty big important connection is Maggie Dugan.
- 5:16So everybody kept asking when do we leave and when we leave?
- 5:19And I kept saying I don't know whenever Dugan tells us to.
- 5:21You know, there was, there was a.
- 5:23There was a cavalcade of young folks there for Maggie, there
- 5:26was media there for Maggie, obviously her family.
- 5:28So a really cool moment for her to to play well in her last
- 5:32regular season 810 game. But the crowd that she had up
- 5:35there was was pretty fun to watch and pretty cool to see.
- 5:38Speaking of Maggie, you know it's real.
- 5:40As you mentioned the last regular season game she's
- 5:42playing in front of her home crowd.
- 5:43I think the announcer on on the TV broadcast said there was like
- 5:464040 plus family members at the game for her.
- 5:49When you, when she puts up a dominant performance like that,
- 5:5235 points in front of her, her home crowd as a coach, I mean,
- 5:58how, how sentimental can you be in that moment versus like, you
- 6:02know what, we got business to take care of getting ready, you
- 6:05know, for the tournament? Like, I mean, it's, it's kind of
- 6:07a special moment, but at the same time, you're playing a very
- 6:09good team on the road. And, you know, I mean, can you
- 6:12soak it in as a coach and just say, as a fan, say, wow, this is
- 6:14special. Well, yeah, I mean, these kids
- 6:17mean the world to you, right? So, you know, obviously we had a
- 6:19moment this this earlier this year with Jada playing against
- 6:21her sister. And you wanted that to go really
- 6:23well. You know, Maggie, you know, not
- 6:25lost on me every time that we play a Philadelphia school, you
- 6:27know, one that she chose to come here over Richmond, There's a
- 6:30lot of Philly kids that don't. I give a lot of Philly AAU
- 6:33coaches a hard time about them not leaving town.
- 6:36Thankfully, we did with with Maggie.
- 6:38So Maggie would be the first to tell you, you know, first and
- 6:40foremost, we had to get the win. We had to get the win.
- 6:42We had to get the win. You love these kids.
- 6:45So you want them to play well and, and, and have those have
- 6:48that shine, have that moment for themselves.
- 6:50But, you know, we're so spoiled that like, it was such an
- 6:54efficient performance from Maggie yesterday that it didn't
- 6:56feel so like over the top. I think I looked up once and
- 7:00it's like, oh, wow, that's, that's impressive.
- 7:02You know, high 20s and then, you know, with some free throws.
- 7:05But would she have 35 points on 16 shots, something like that?
- 7:09Like the efficiency that she's had this year is it's just been
- 7:12absurd, you know, and I think, you know, maybe we've talked
- 7:14about this, but even some of the games that people, you know,
- 7:17aren't all American numbers and and draft pick numbers and
- 7:20you're like, yeah, she completely dominated game.
- 7:22You know, she had 38 where she had plus 38 and 30 minutes in
- 7:25the in the Rhode Island game. Like he's she's just doing it so
- 7:29efficiently. She's doing it the right way.
- 7:31She's including her teammates. You know, I think we've talked
- 7:34maybe talked about this with with some others, but I think
- 7:36the only time that she's complained about her role is a
- 7:39game that she took nineteen shots and she was in my office
- 7:41complaining that you took too many shots that game.
- 7:44So just a special player and, and we've got a special group
- 7:47and, and that's, you know, hopefully why we can finish this
- 7:49off and in a positive, positive way.
- 7:51You know, I'm curious, like I, I think we look back on this year
- 7:56like offense really hasn't been the issue.
- 7:57Now you had a couple, you know, this tough road trip where
- 8:00offense was an issue, but in general, it's like how to get
- 8:02the defense to be better and better and better.
- 8:04And so Saint Joe's game and holding them to 61 points.
- 8:07Also, we've noticed in the last month or so a little more zone
- 8:11getting kind of thrown in there after a time out or after out of
- 8:14bounds. Like is that something that this
- 8:17and maybe I just haven't noticed you've been doing all year and
- 8:19it's just been more noticeable lately?
- 8:20Or is that a new wrinkle you've been working on in practice and
- 8:23started throwing in? Together it's it's something
- 8:25we've been doing all year. I think we've gotten a little
- 8:27bit better at it. I think we've understood it and
- 8:29fine-tuned a couple things and maybe felt a little more
- 8:31comfortable in certain matchups. You know, I, I always say you
- 8:34get to certain time of year, you know, baseball analogy, you got
- 8:37to have a curveball, you know, you got to have a curveball that
- 8:39you can throw in there. And I think for us sometimes,
- 8:42you know, there's different reasons, right?
- 8:43Hey, penetration, this, hey, this is a good match up.
- 8:46Foul trouble. Hey, you know, we got to hide
- 8:48somebody right now. We, we, we feel like we can do
- 8:49this. And, and so I, I think it, it's
- 8:52a strategic thing. You know, obviously sometimes,
- 8:55you know, timeouts are a reason to, to hold a run that somebody
- 9:00else is on. Sometimes just throwing that
- 9:01curveball in there, sometimes throwing the curveball in the
- 9:03dirt, sometimes, I mean, we've the the George Washington game,
- 9:06we started pressing. I we hadn't done that.
- 9:07You know, that was just something that like, Hey, can we
- 9:09mix this up a little bit and, and do something different?
- 9:12You know, I think we picked up and pressured a little bit
- 9:13yesterday more than we probably had planned, but just something
- 9:17to get our guys going, something to, to get you, you know, maybe
- 9:20back on your heels a little bit, change the rhythm of a game that
- 9:22that's really what it's been for us.
- 9:24And, and I think we've gotten a lot better at it, But I also
- 9:26think we've gotten better defensively over the season,
- 9:28which has probably been the biggest, the the biggest
- 9:30improvement that that you've seen from our program.
- 9:34Late in that game against Saint Joe's, it was a kind of a very
- 9:36subtle moment, but they got a breakaway or where they where
- 9:40they had numbers in their favor and and Alicia Newell casually
- 9:43fouled the girl who's going down the court.
- 9:46It was only our third foul, so they weren't going to the line.
- 9:48It just allowed our defense to reset.
- 9:50And I thought for a second about it.
- 9:52And it seems to me like you have a way of recruiting head Z
- 9:56players who who are smart about the game of basketball because
- 10:00that won't show up on a stat sheet.
- 10:01But like, you know, you're just thinking about the defensive
- 10:03reset to give you the best chance of reducing their point
- 10:06total or reducing their ability to score.
- 10:09And you think about Sweeney, who's like having a second coach
- 10:11on the floor and Maggie is 1/3 coach on the floor.
- 10:13And how how cerebral Rachel is. Like, is that an intentional
- 10:17strategy of yours to recruit really smart basketball players?
- 10:19Or is that something that you kind of teach to your system?
- 10:22Maybe a little bit of both. You know, I think the the feel
- 10:25for the game is something that we really talked about a lot
- 10:27more as as a staff, you know, and I think that's something
- 10:29that can be taught, but a little bit harder.
- 10:32So, you know, you always look athleticism, length and you
- 10:35shoot the basketball things that we've always looked for.
- 10:38But sometimes just that feel for a game, you know, your ability
- 10:40to pass, you know, you, you watch us play the balls in
- 10:43Maggie's hands because she's a great player, but just
- 10:45positionally, the ball was in her hands, the balls in Addie's
- 10:47hands, the balls in Tierra's hands.
- 10:49We have quarterbacks for sometimes.
- 10:51I always tell our post players you're you're the quarterback
- 10:53too, you know, use the Tom Brady analogy, use different analogies
- 10:57with that. So I think you need to have a
- 10:58certain feel of the game. It's just something that we look
- 11:01for. You know, the moment you're
- 11:02talking about. Yeah, I think we had third
- 11:03quarter yesterday. I mean, I think we put them at
- 11:05the line 11 times and like most games, we're not putting people
- 11:08in the line 11 total. So going back to your point,
- 11:11when your team that doesn't foul a lot, I think you can use those
- 11:14take fouls a little strict strategically.
- 11:16I think that is something that we've done a little bit this
- 11:18year of, you know, I think I said it yesterday.
- 11:21Hey, Maggie, you can't, I think she had three or four files at
- 11:23that point and you can't take one.
- 11:24But the rest of us know that we've got one to give and, and
- 11:27at that point, if we had two to give, yeah, it is something that
- 11:30that we use. And I think there's some nuances
- 11:32that we talked about it. I think there's another one
- 11:33yesterday of A2 for one that we we negated A2 for one for, for
- 11:38Saint Joe's just for letting the ball bounce a little bit, not
- 11:41inbounding it right away. Small things like that that we
- 11:43do talk about. There are kids I think enjoy and
- 11:45do pick up on. That's awesome.
- 11:48So looking back to kind of maybe this season, the last season,
- 11:52obviously we've had a lot of success NCAA tournaments, like
- 11:55when you set your goals for the season like it, do you have like
- 11:58your own personal goals and kind of then you talk to the team
- 12:01about their goals or how does that all come about when you're
- 12:04like in the summer getting a new team together?
- 12:08Yeah, we, we don't have those goal meetings that never did,
- 12:13You know, now we'd all be crazy. I think fans, players, coaching
- 12:17staff alike that like, yeah, in the offseason, it's we got to
- 12:20get better. We got to get better because
- 12:21we're trying to get to a Sweet 16.
- 12:23We we got to get the NCAA tournament.
- 12:25We got to win a championship. You know, I think that's, that's
- 12:27probably the, the emptiness that maybe I've had in the last 24
- 12:30hours is like I I've really proud of myself that, you know,
- 12:35that the three situations I've taken over, it's it's been
- 12:37rebuilt, right? And so I've always told, I said
- 12:40always told the AD for I guess the last two jobs has been the
- 12:42same AD at different jobs of like, hey, man, you know, start,
- 12:45start judging us on year 4. You know, year 4, we're going to
- 12:48start. The goal is to win
- 12:49championships. And so, you know, I, yes,
- 12:51there's a, we want to win a championship every single year.
- 12:56Is that something that's realistic?
- 12:57Maybe, maybe not. But I think that once we've
- 12:59established the program, winning a championship is, is always the
- 13:03goal. Again, a little bit of an
- 13:04emptiness yesterday when you're watching a couple other teams
- 13:06Deservedly so, you know, have their shine.
- 13:10But yeah, I mean, I think once you you don't you're not coming
- 13:13to this program to to to not make an NCAA tournament run.
- 13:16You know, Maggie Dugan, Rachel Sweeney, they didn't come back
- 13:21to just hang out, right? They're they're working hard and
- 13:25you know, you and then I'm on the opposite end of Ava rain
- 13:28some of the other Friday. You don't come to this program
- 13:30if it's not winning a you know, winning a championship isn't
- 13:33high on your priority. So it is something we talked
- 13:36about both. Honestly guys, once the season
- 13:38starts, it is we got to get better.
- 13:40We got to get better. You know, and I think we've been
- 13:42dealt to it. You know, I've said this talked
- 13:44about this situation a lot that the locker room at Rhode Island
- 13:47on December 30th of look guys, we just got shown that we are
- 13:50not good enough. We're not good enough today.
- 13:52We were not good enough to be another team in our league.
- 13:53So we have got to get better. We got to get better.
- 13:57And then, you know, you look at it last last week, I think we
- 13:59were top 20 and in both over the last since since that game,
- 14:03we've been top 20 in in in rating of of defensive rating
- 14:07and offensive rating in the country and weirdly defensive
- 14:09rating. I think we were top ten in the
- 14:11country over the last 12 to 14 games.
- 14:13So that's a heck of a stride from I think a lot of coaches in
- 14:16our league that maybe didn't pay attention to our defense and
- 14:18didn't respect our defense. We've gotten better, we've
- 14:21gotten better. And I think that's really the
- 14:23that's really the driving point for our for our program is not
- 14:26necessary championship talk once the season starts, just getting
- 14:28better and put yourself in a good spot.
- 14:30You mentioned the three freshmen.
- 14:33You've been playing the three freshmen together quite a bit
- 14:35now and watching it as a fan, I I don't see any real noticeable
- 14:40degradation. So the freshmen are no longer
- 14:42freshmen in my opinion. Tell us a little bit about what
- 14:44you've seen about how the freshman class has evolved.
- 14:47And, and that's exactly what I've said too.
- 14:48Like I, I, when we've talked about it there, there is a
- 14:51moment maybe once in each the last couple games, I'm like, Oh
- 14:53my God, we have 3 freshmen out there.
- 14:55And it wasn't, it wasn't a scary thing.
- 14:57It was like, oh, that's kind of cool.
- 14:58I don't look at them as freshmen right now.
- 15:01You know, they, they've, they've been through the grind.
- 15:03They've put up with me. And I mean that in, in a way of
- 15:05like, I'm my relationship, the way I talked to, to Maggie,
- 15:09Rachel is going to be different. How I talked to, to their
- 15:11freshmen. You're trying to groom those
- 15:13freshmen, you're trying to toughen those freshmen up.
- 15:15How I talked to Maggie as a senior, how I talked to Maggie
- 15:17as a freshman are way different as well.
- 15:20So I, I, I mean this with all sincerity and love.
- 15:22Like they've been through the grind.
- 15:24We put them through the grind as freshmen and it it's been some
- 15:27ups and downs and eye rolls and this guy's crazy, this guy's
- 15:31wrong. This they've been through this.
- 15:34And I think, you know, you look at what Anisha, you know,
- 15:37obviously people saw what she did against LaSalle last game,
- 15:40but that that had been some growth moments throughout the
- 15:43year that that she needed to kind of mature up.
- 15:45She needed to kind of go through some of that.
- 15:47She'd been having some really, really strong practices and,
- 15:51and, and you saw the results there.
- 15:53You also look at, you know, jump around.
- 15:55But even with, with Allie Sweeney, like, I don't think our
- 15:57freshmen, our freshmen look at what Sweeney's done and they
- 16:01don't realize that all of them have probably played, had played
- 16:03more than what Allie did as freshmen.
- 16:05And so some of this is you're in a program where there's other
- 16:08really, really good players. Allie was behind Grace, but she
- 16:11was figuring some things out. It wasn't always smooth, but she
- 16:14was figuring things out. I think that's what you've seen
- 16:16with, with all of our freshmen, you know, and, and even Shanika
- 16:19to like Shanika is going to be really, really good.
- 16:23You know, maybe shame on me for not finding some, some more
- 16:25spots for her. But we have 3 senior post
- 16:28players right now that are really good that have been
- 16:30through this. And so that's a little bit of
- 16:32figuring things out as freshmen. And then it's not just for your
- 16:37sophomore, junior year. I think by the end of your
- 16:38freshman year, you're at a spot that really need to help or
- 16:41really can help us. And if you look at the
- 16:43construction of this year's roster, they have to, you know,
- 16:45we knew that as a staff, we knew these guys were going to have to
- 16:48grow up and they were going to have to help us to to make a run
- 16:50in March. You know, I love during that
- 16:53Nisha game against Los Al, she scored twenty.
- 16:55There was a point not when she got to 20, but on the way to 20
- 16:59that I remember there was a big shot.
- 17:01Maybe there was a time out or something in alley was on the
- 17:05bench, like had this look of like actually looked at one of
- 17:09the assistant coaches was kind of like I told you and they like
- 17:12fist. They like fist bumped like some
- 17:14version of like I could tell she had seen this coming.
- 17:17Maybe not, you know, 20 points was a bit of a surprise, but I
- 17:20you could tell, like the look on her face was like a little bit
- 17:23of like a proud, proud Mama. Like watching this freshman
- 17:27like, you know, have a game like that.
- 17:29Yeah, and I I think for all of us, right.
- 17:31And and it's funny, I I rewatched the game again last
- 17:33night. Obviously now that we've got the
- 17:34LaSalle draw, watched that on the plane coming home last
- 17:37night. And yeah, she was she was in a
- 17:39zone. But kind of like what you said,
- 17:40I remember like Maggie, like insisting on getting the ball to
- 17:43her. Like that's a big growing up
- 17:45moment when you know your potential.
- 17:47All American is just asking you to to step up in a big time role
- 17:50and feeding you the ball and in a big time moment in that.
- 17:53I remember some of the crowd shots, you know, watching it
- 17:55last night too. I'm sorry, bench shots watching
- 17:58it last night too, of just how excited our players were for
- 18:02Anisha. Cause one again, we've all put
- 18:04in so much work and so much time into this.
- 18:06And when you, you see somebody get some credit, you see
- 18:08somebody get that feeling. We've all been there right when
- 18:11things are just clicking and all of a sudden all the stresses are
- 18:14left behind, All the work feels like, like it was worth it.
- 18:18So really a cool moment And and I think she's really carried
- 18:20that that through now since he's in these other games too, not
- 18:24just that she's played well, but I've been saying too, if you
- 18:28watch Allie, those minutes that she comes in after she's gotten
- 18:31a break, she's been fantastic. And that's probably something we
- 18:34didn't have a month ago. Yeah, you knew Allie could play
- 18:3740, but you don't want her to have to play 40, right?
- 18:40Or. 55 or. 55 right against Davidson.
- 18:44Hey question for you. So going to your coaching
- 18:47influences. You've been extremely successful
- 18:48Chicago Bucknell and here like what, who who in your life and
- 18:54it could be somebody you know personally or somebody that you
- 18:56just admired is your greatest coaching influence who's
- 18:59somebody who kind of you just said I got to I got to do it
- 19:01like that or that person taught me this.
- 19:04Yeah, you know, I, I had a great youth coach back in the day that
- 19:08that since his past and I think that's a great influence.
- 19:10But it's interesting, right? Like I got, I got my first head
- 19:14coaching job at the age of 25. I got hired as an assistant in
- 19:17September. 2 weeks later, head coach says, hey, I'm, I'm
- 19:21leaving. And I thought I was out of a
- 19:22job. I didn't even know the AD He
- 19:24came in. I remember he said, you know, do
- 19:26you have a bass on out of bounds play?
- 19:27And I was like, what are you talking about, pal?
- 19:28He's like, I don't know you, but we can't do a search.
- 19:31So my point is like I was 25. I was a head coach before is
- 19:34really an assistant coach. I I was a GA and had a great
- 19:38boss and and so did learn a ton from her, but you Start learning
- 19:42from your competitors. I I think that's my biggest
- 19:44thing. When I was at University of
- 19:45Chicago, had a cool moment. We played Saint Louis this year
- 19:49about a month ago, Chicago and Wash U of, of, of Saint Louis.
- 19:53Wash U of Saint Louis was the dominant Division Three power.
- 19:57They had four or five national titles.
- 20:00She's a legend. She's a Hall of Famer and they
- 20:02were a rival. And here I was like 25.
- 20:04I didn't know anything. And here's this legend on the
- 20:06other end. And so you just out of fear of
- 20:09failure, I think I just always watched her.
- 20:11I watched so much of of some of those are VHS tapes.
- 20:14If you date ourselves here a little bit.
- 20:17Of them, but you just I felt like I learned so much from our
- 20:20competitors and some of that was scouting.
- 20:22I never felt like I was good enough.
- 20:24I still probably have that now that like I feel like I need to
- 20:26watch more film and do more and work hard and everybody else
- 20:29because just that fear of failure.
- 20:31And I still do now like I still think there's coaches in our
- 20:33league. There's still coaches I've gone
- 20:34against that I'm like, hey, that that that coach is really good.
- 20:38So, yeah, weirdly for me, I can't say it's been like I had a
- 20:41great boss as Aga that a lot of this has been learning from your
- 20:45competitors and and we had a cool Division Three group of
- 20:48coaches that back then actually we were really close.
- 20:50And and so anyway, she going long winded here, but Coach
- 20:54Nancy Faye at Wash U came back and talked with our team when we
- 20:57were at Saint Louis a few weeks ago and crazy story, but she's
- 21:01actually the coach at University of Illinois that recruited Sam
- 21:04Dewey. So when Sam was a portal, all
- 21:07come in full circle. When Sam was in the portal, I
- 21:09remember, you know, calling Coach Faye and talking with her
- 21:12about Sam. She had recruited Sam to
- 21:14Illinois but was not there when when she coached her or when Sam
- 21:17got there. Speaking of learning from your
- 21:19adversaries, Tom re watches all the spider sound off episodes to
- 21:22see how I do it and then and then he tries to do it himself.
- 21:25So I mean, I we know what he talks about.
- 21:27Coach, it's, it's amazing. It's like, what are we like the
- 21:29average of the four or five people were around the most, You
- 21:32know, here, here we are. Look how lucky you both are.
- 21:34Right, I'm curious you, you talk about the, the last, you know,
- 21:39your career at Richmond at least like in over 4 years, thinking
- 21:43kind of a Maggie's four years, like the attendance at
- 21:45Richmond's gone from like 700 ish to 2000.
- 21:50So 1. Like, you know, like how does
- 21:52that make you feel when we've got kind of the, the bigger
- 21:54crowds? But there's also, you know, I
- 21:57think of goal. I remember when I saw that we
- 21:58were at 2000, like, oh, I wonder where that ranks.
- 22:01And there's still a lot of schools that get more than 2000
- 22:04at their game. So it's like we can do even
- 22:06better. But like, how do you see that
- 22:08that evolution to date and like, what do you think we could
- 22:11achieve in the future when it comes to kind of getting fans
- 22:15engaged? You know, one, I will say, well,
- 22:19I'll even back up. It's one of my biggest goals.
- 22:21I and I and I think I I spoke openly about that when when I
- 22:25first got here, especially once we got good, you know, once you
- 22:28felt good about the products that people were watching, you
- 22:30really want to get people here, But that that's been a goal of
- 22:33mine really everywhere I've been.
- 22:35I know winning is important. All of these things.
- 22:37This was before NIL and making it like revenue generation.
- 22:42I just wanted to create atmosphere like that's just.
- 22:44I, I wasn't a great player, but I loved college basketball.
- 22:48Like going to a college basketball game was like the
- 22:50coolest thing in the world. And my son probably feels that
- 22:52right now. So that was always a, a driving
- 22:55goal is something we've worked at.
- 22:57I, I say on women in women's basketball, like your head coach
- 23:00has to be also like the head of your marketing, or at least a
- 23:02big part of the marketing drive. We have great, a great marketing
- 23:06staff here. Sometimes I think I drive them
- 23:08nuts because I'm constantly coming up with with crazy minor
- 23:11league ideas. I've I've gotten really close
- 23:13with Parney over there at the at the flying squirrels and just
- 23:16try to pick his brain all the time on because sometimes I just
- 23:18feel like this is it's like minor League Baseball, right?
- 23:20You got to come up with some some different things, but I
- 23:22think the the biggest driver for us is just been how involved our
- 23:26team has been with our fans. You know, you see this after
- 23:29games that it's just it's a party, right?
- 23:31Like, what am I going to say to our team in the locker room
- 23:33other than something I'm going to have to apologize for the
- 23:35next day because I saw it wrong on film, you know, and, and, and
- 23:39so I I think that's a good draw for our players too, of just
- 23:44getting to be a big part of the Richmond community.
- 23:47The fans have been awesome. I mean, again, what do we want
- 23:4932 home A10 games in a row, something like that?
- 23:52Like the huge part of that is, is the atmosphere that we have
- 23:56at the Robbins Center and, and at the Henry Co Center, which
- 23:59hopefully we'll talk about here. But you know, we, we said the
- 24:02disappointment of not getting the one seed and, and maybe even
- 24:04two seed. The the positive here is a three
- 24:06seed 730 man. We got a Friday night party this
- 24:09week. No obstacles to getting out on
- 24:11Friday night at 7:30. Just to finish up on that
- 24:14thought, though. I mean, I've, I've hung around
- 24:16after the game, the last two home games that you played in
- 24:19the Robin Center, just mainly to take it all in 'cause it was
- 24:22the, it's, it's, it's sort of the end of the era for some
- 24:24great players. And I'm just so impressed by how
- 24:27you and the rest of the team just network with all of the
- 24:30fans, you know, just to make, make them feel like, hey, we
- 24:33really appreciate you. That's just a a difference I've
- 24:36seen in the women's game that I really do appreciate as as as a
- 24:39fan, just to see how hard you guys work to build that kind of
- 24:41loyalty and camaraderie with the fan.
- 24:43Base No, I appreciate that. And again, it is something we,
- 24:46we, we take a lot of pride in. And, and the fact that I think
- 24:49the last four games, we literally have had a security
- 24:52detail for Maggie and for Rachel.
- 24:54Like, I mean, we're at, we're at women's basketball, right?
- 24:57We're at women's basketball at the University of Richmond.
- 24:59They literally have a security detail a second that the thing
- 25:01ends because they are being mobbed.
- 25:03And you know, God, God bless Maggie.
- 25:05She handles this so well. People have no idea how well she
- 25:09handles it. And, and again, not sentiment.
- 25:13People have no idea that the garbage that she puts up with
- 25:15too, you know, like we all see the positive and that's great.
- 25:18She's at that level right now that she gets some of the
- 25:21negative side of it too. And she's probably never talked
- 25:23about that. Nobody has any idea how how hard
- 25:25it is to handle some of that stuff.
- 25:27But she's handled with such grace.
- 25:28She she's given back to be the greatest ambassador for our
- 25:32program you could ever ask for. And, and like I said, now we got
- 25:35security detail for two of our best players, which is crazy.
- 25:38Yeah, that's crazy. We don't have security detail
- 25:41yet here it's miter sound off. We haven't, we haven't got to
- 25:44that level this. Is my security guy right here?
- 25:46That's. Right.
- 25:47Which just generally means I'm I'm I'm not in a good place if
- 25:50we get attacked. Yeah, that's right.
- 25:52Anyway, before we get to the A10 tournament, obviously we want to
- 25:55focus on that. I'm curious on just like your
- 25:58philosophy with team building, like you got a big recruit
- 26:00freshman class coming in. There's the portal obviously
- 26:04like how do you, how do you balance all of that out kind of
- 26:07when does the portal work really begin?
- 26:09I mean, I know we've heard plenty of like it's year round,
- 26:13but just how do you do that balance of like how much the
- 26:15freshman side versus kind of how do you leverage the portal?
- 26:20Yeah, I mean, I mean the, the portal probably is on people's
- 26:22minds and you know, every once while you're getting stuff on
- 26:25it. And and I don't know if this
- 26:27means we're not doing our job well, but we really try,
- 26:30especially me to just not think about that, especially this time
- 26:33of year. Like I my staff knows that Yep,
- 26:35we all have recruiting responsibilities.
- 26:37We all have this my absolute, without a close doubt, my main
- 26:41focus is our team and our players, you know, and that's
- 26:44that's not superficial. That's not like, hey, that means
- 26:46that they'll come back. Like I just feel in my job, you
- 26:50got to be in the present. You have to take care of your
- 26:53kids. And that's what I enjoy.
- 26:54Like, yes, I realized that we need to get more of these
- 26:58players need to find the next, next Maggie, the next Rachel,
- 27:00all of that sort of stuff. But I just, I just feel like you
- 27:04have to enjoy your current players.
- 27:06You have to otherwise this otherwise this job can suck.
- 27:09And you hear people talk about how hard this job is.
- 27:11It is really hard. There's a lot of things that you
- 27:13know you didn't sign up for, but you still get to coach an
- 27:17awesome group of 14 young women. You still get to work with a
- 27:20great staff. You have to enjoy that part.
- 27:23And I think me as the head coach, I have to have more than,
- 27:28if not all of my focus on on our current team.
- 27:30So really tried to do that. And but I also probably try to
- 27:35make this organic as well, especially with our players.
- 27:38We've all done, I want to say corny that sounds, you know,
- 27:40we'll we'll do different events. I'll have them over to the house
- 27:42for for dinner. But you know, other than this
- 27:45fighter open, we did the spider trickshot challenge.
- 27:48Or was that like a three weeks ago for the first time, Coach
- 27:51won that one. Hey.
- 27:55I tell you what, I think they enjoy a lot more when coach
- 27:56isn't winning, that maybe I took too much joy in that one.
- 28:01But just try to make this fun, try to make this enjoyable and I
- 28:03think you you need to make this player LED, especially this time
- 28:07of year. Did you have to carry Ava in
- 28:10that competition? I know she was, wasn't she?
- 28:11Or. It's a team game.
- 28:13It's a team game, guys. It's a team game.
- 28:16So I'll, I'll, I'll there, there were plenty of eyes there.
- 28:18There's maybe some film. This was a team effort and glad
- 28:22we can finally get our name engraved on that thing.
- 28:24So Friday night, 7:30, first game, you got one of three
- 28:28possible opponents. I won't ask you to comment on
- 28:30those guys because I mean, obviously they're all bring
- 28:32something to the table. What talk about this week of
- 28:36practice. How do you get ready for Friday
- 28:37night? Obviously Spider fans, you got
- 28:40to you got to show up in Henrico.
- 28:41It's a 20 minute drive. Rep the red, you know, make that
- 28:44place a red out. But tell us about practice this
- 28:46week. How does that look?
- 28:47Yeah, again, I think we have a mature team.
- 28:51So I did this is not looking past anything.
- 28:54You know, I think, you know, we met between the bus and the
- 28:57plane and I guess it's called the tarmac last night as a
- 28:59staff. And you know, when when you have
- 29:02staff that that kind of has focused on different opponents
- 29:04throughout the season that that sometimes works great.
- 29:06And and me when you're signing that you're spacing those out
- 29:10sometimes, you know, that may mean that Ariel and I think has
- 29:13three really good teams and and and potential opponents.
- 29:17We kind of had to split some of that stuff up.
- 29:19So, you know, obviously, you know, LaSalle is the higher
- 29:22seed, so we got to make sure, you know, Janine's got them.
- 29:25We just played them a couple weeks ago, right?
- 29:27You got Saint Louis and and and Fordham as possibilities.
- 29:30So you have your prep for that. But I also feel like we'd be
- 29:33doing a disservice if we only focused on those teams right
- 29:37now. We have to understand that
- 29:39Friday night after that 730 game, if we're if we're good
- 29:43enough and fortunate enough to advance, there's not much prep
- 29:46for that Saturday opponent. So we've we will, you know,
- 29:51focus on some other potential opponents.
- 29:54You know, I am last night and today.
- 29:56We will do some things in practice on Monday and Tuesday
- 29:59for future opponents. And then, you know, we're
- 30:02actually going to give them Wednesday off at am hoping that
- 30:04this is going to be a long weekend.
- 30:06We'll give the players Wednesday off and then Thursday.
- 30:09The hard part is we don't know who we're going to play until
- 30:12about 10:00 Thursday night. So Thursday's practice, you're
- 30:17kind of prepping for maybe more than one team or you're putting
- 30:20your eggs into one basket and then trying to figure that out
- 30:23on the back end. But we will.
- 30:25And this is where our players maturity and what will come into
- 30:28play here that Yep, we're working on some teams that it's
- 30:31not quote the sole focus of the next game, which is different
- 30:33than the regular season with that.
- 30:36Or do you have coaches go Wednesday or Thursday to kind of
- 30:39watch the opponent's live? Yeah, we'll have, we'll have
- 30:42somebody over there on Wednesday and then on Thursday, to be
- 30:44honest with you again, the 7:30 start, we will practice here
- 30:47Thursday. We'll get a meal.
- 30:50You know what, we're going to stay downtown this weekend.
- 30:53We will. The bus will go to Henrico on
- 30:56Thursday night for that 730 game.
- 30:58They'll at least stay for some of it.
- 31:00Staff, I'm sure we'll stay for all of it.
- 31:02We'll get everything in a row and get ready for Friday.
- 31:05We'll come back here and and do a shoot around here on Friday.
- 31:08The unique thing, and this is something I haven't really
- 31:10talked with all of our players about yet, is that 730 game on
- 31:14on Friday, you know, can be really tricky and unique, right?
- 31:19We're the 10th game of the tournament on Friday night.
- 31:22So when we play Friday, 9 of the other teams are at home.
- 31:27We're one of five teams that are left.
- 31:28And so all of a sudden at 7:30, like it's really go time and if
- 31:32you're fortunate enough to win, you know, you're you're playing
- 31:35right away again at 1:30 the next day.
- 31:37So in like an 18 to 20 hour window, you're figuring out are
- 31:40you in the championship game or you're not in the championship
- 31:42game. So you really kind of have to
- 31:43build it for that, but you also have to have some things prepped
- 31:46for that 130 opponent. How how does the last I mean two
- 31:50seasons ago you win it. Last year you had got got upset
- 31:53in the semis. Like how does that does that
- 31:56change anything that that you're doing or the team is obviously
- 32:00we got players who have played in those games.
- 32:01Anything different or it's kind of, you know, business as usual
- 32:04in terms of attacking the the tough?
- 32:06Tournament again, other than the scheduling that we just talked
- 32:09about, right, when you, when you 11 AM, you kind of have a full
- 32:11day before the next day, 11 AM. That can be good and that can be
- 32:15bad. You know, I, I think obviously
- 32:16being the one seed it, it, it has some advantages.
- 32:19It has some disadvantages. The three seed has some
- 32:21disadvantages with the, with the quick turn around, but it also
- 32:25when you look at the path, it's, it's not the worst thing in the
- 32:28world. So other than scheduling, I
- 32:31think we can learn with some confidence of how we've handled
- 32:33the weeks. You know, Wednesday is not a
- 32:35normal off day two days before a game on a when on a Friday, But
- 32:39you also know from two years ago that those three games can be
- 32:42long. It, it can be a long day there.
- 32:44So you kind of have to shorten the week a little bit.
- 32:47You know, we, we, we've had a tough stretch the last two weeks
- 32:51as well. So there's got to be some some
- 32:53rest and freshness going in for our players.
- 32:57But yeah, I think there's some confidence right now in the fact
- 32:59that we've been through this. I think there's also the flip
- 33:01side of that is we have anger is maybe too strong of a word.
- 33:05Maybe it's not too strong of a word of how last year ended.
- 33:08So I think there's some internal drive that we have, but there's
- 33:12also some confidence to know that our prep, our experience
- 33:16has been there and done that. Yeah, you don't mind that sad
- 33:19taste in your mouth, right? Like it at some point you want
- 33:21like you don't want to get that to get you out of sorts, but
- 33:25like, you know, having a little chip on the shoulder never seems
- 33:28to hurt in. Sports, yeah.
- 33:29And there there there's some of that from last year and there's
- 33:31some of it from this year, to be honest with you.
- 33:33I mean, I don't think that that's that that's completely
- 33:36gone away this year from some things.
- 33:39Well, I think if you are lucky enough to get through Friday
- 33:41night and I, you know, it looks like it could be a looming third
- 33:45rematch with George Mason on Saturday at 1:30.
- 33:48They're a awful physical team inside.
- 33:50They really do put a beating on the teams that they play.
- 33:53You know, hopefully you can get on to a lead in that first
- 33:57Friday night game so you can rest some of your core players
- 33:59because that would be a really physical affair if that's how it
- 34:01matches, if that's how the seating matches up goes or.
- 34:06For sure, for sure. And I think weirdly, you know,
- 34:08it's also like that'd be the 4th time that we've prepared for
- 34:10George Mason. You know, we prepared everything
- 34:13for George Mason in January. That game got moved.
- 34:16So you know, it's it's, it's a team that we know well.
- 34:18But yeah, you can't the physicality that they play with
- 34:21and, and just a a really, really good staff that if that prepares
- 34:25really well. I mean, we have really good
- 34:26coaches in this league. But I think, you know what
- 34:28Vanessa has done up there and flipping that thing around is
- 34:31it's been very impressive. But they're they're always a
- 34:33tough preparation. You know they're going to be
- 34:34very well prepared for you as well.
- 34:36I think it's going to be like mid 60s or 70s this weekend, so
- 34:40I think you'll be OK with getting this game in.
- 34:42I don't, I don't think we'll have any wet weather
- 34:44difficulties. This started to poke the bear a
- 34:46little bit. Brother, you're trying to poke.
- 34:48The bear a little. Bit no, but again it it's great
- 34:52weather and great golf weather. It's going to be great golf
- 34:54weather for the next 5 months here guys.
- 34:56So there are no excuses. We, we got to get ourselves, we
- 34:59got to get ourselves a crowd and and honest God, man, I've said
- 35:02this two years ago when we walked out for the 11 AM game,
- 35:05the first ever game at Henrico at 11 AM.
- 35:08The crowd was awesome. Seeing the red like that's still
- 35:11a goosebump moment for me. We we got to get a crowd there.
- 35:14This is it's for the. Bug out there for for Spider
- 35:17fandom. So it's a much smaller venue
- 35:20than the Robin Center and all of the teams that play in this
- 35:23travel really well. You'll see big fan bases for
- 35:25each team, but there's something to be said, you know, for a
- 35:28Richmond game at Henrico Center, when there's that many red
- 35:31jerseys or shirts or sweatshirts in the audience, it is it can be
- 35:35a really special moment for the for the team, for the energy
- 35:38level and the place is just a really good venue for
- 35:40basketball. So come on out and support the
- 35:43ladies Friday night, hopefully into Saturday and maybe even
- 35:45Sunday at 4:00 if we're lucky. I, I think coach, we, we really
- 35:50appreciate you coming on. We know this could be a busy
- 35:52week of preparation for you again.
- 35:55Second time we've got a chance to talk to you this year.
- 35:57We'd love what you're doing. 25 wins, 37 in the net.
- 36:00Firmly on the at large bubble right now.
- 36:02So, and I hope you have no time for golf until April.
- 36:05That's exactly. And you know what, You know what
- 36:08the weird thing is, April's now just incredibly busy month for
- 36:11us as well in this profession. But you know what, we'll, we'll
- 36:15get that vitamin D in different ways and we'll find different
- 36:19ways out there. But like you guys said, man,
- 36:21first and foremost, I promise you, you'll have, you'll have a
- 36:23great, a great time this week and it's a great venue.
- 36:27Whereas you just said awesome atmosphere.
- 36:30But we, we got to get this thing rocking, man.
- 36:31Like our our players, hate to hate to say this, but our
- 36:34players do deserve this. But more for you guys and for
- 36:38for fans and you will have a great time.
- 36:40You might even need to get there early on Friday night during
- 36:42that George. Mason game, we're actually media
- 36:44for this, so we've got media passes.
- 36:45So I think we can, we can, we can get in at.
- 36:47Any time and just for the fans who?
- 36:49Got key folks out there, get there early because I I do
- 36:52think. And not not for U.S.
- 36:53Media, but for the fans who haven't been there, there is a
- 36:56bar yeah at, at at the arena. So there there's opportunity as
- 37:01a good snack bar and a regular bar, so.
- 37:04And it was super fun time. Yeah, and, and, and it's a
- 37:07Friday night. I, I, I'm sure that they'll get
- 37:09this out, but I think there's a Buffalo wild rings around the
- 37:12corner that I believe there might be a pregame event there
- 37:15for, for maybe, I don't know, for potentially all games, but
- 37:20hopefully we're all putting the vibe out there for hopefully a
- 37:22celebration on Sunday at WWW. I think it's a Plaza Azteca
- 37:26around the corner that we've already kind of had our eyes on.
- 37:29First and foremost, we, we need to play well.
- 37:31We need to have a good week of prep.
- 37:33We need to get some spider fans out there and and have a party
- 37:36all weekend up in Henrico. Absolutely, Coach, we really
- 37:39appreciate your time today. Good luck with practice this
- 37:41week, good luck Friday night and we hope to talk to you soon.
- 37:44You guys are the best. Thank you.
- 37:45Appreciate. It thanks Coach.
