- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: Let's finish the fight.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: Listen up, Chief, out.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: Hello everyone and welcome to theagesworks podcast.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: My name is Ryan and today we have a crazy episode.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: Literally just a couple days after recording the last one.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: Please check that out if you haven't yet.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: Today we'll be talking about the Xbox shake up with Phil Spencer retiring.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: Sarah Bond resigning as president Matt Booty getting promoted.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: And Ash Hasharma taking over for Phil Spencer kind of going over those emails.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: Some of the press and my thoughts on it as I am.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: huge Xbox fan and have been forever, but lately things haven't been looking great on up as a platform and the future's bleak with AI and obviously Microsoft being so heavy into that.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: So we're talking about that.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then the prediction finally came true for me and Brian.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: We've been talking about this for years.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: Me in particular really wanted this the most along with three other games, which I hope come out.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: there is a real possibility that all my favorite Pokemon games from Gen 3 are on the switch and we're starting with Pokemon Fire and Leaf Green which kind of randomly showed up on the Nintendo eShop at like 11pm Pacific Standard Time.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: February 19th on Thursday night.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: I saw Wario 64's huge shout out to him.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: Post about it and I was like okay if Wario is posting about it.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's got to be true and sure enough I looked it up on my switch to immediately and it's true So yeah, it's official now and Pokemon just came out with it and announced it because they really had no choice It's kind of weird to leave it you know as a I mean, it's already on the e-shop so They kind of had to come out and release the trailer early So yeah, Pokemon fire red and leaf green are being released next Friday the 27th for Pokemon Day, which is the first
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: 30th anniversary of Pokemon and I had just got done saying how well we'll get into that.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: We'll get into that.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we'll start with the Xbox stuff.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, Phil Spencer is retiring after 38 years working at Microsoft.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of a bittersweet, I used to love Uncle Phil.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: I still think he's amazing.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: I do think though the last three years have been really rough with his decisions and just how things have really played out maybe even four years.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's been pretty, pretty gnarly in my opinion.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, it's tough, it's tough.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll go ahead and read his email.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: So he says, last fall, I shared with Satya, who's the head of Microsoft, but I was thinking about stepping back and starting the next chapter of my life.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: From that moment, we align on approaching this transition with intention, ensuring stability, and strengthening the foundation we've built.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: Expox has always been more than a business, it's a vibrant community of players, creators, and teams who care deeply about what we build, and how we build it.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: and it deserves a thoughtful, deliberate plan for the road ahead.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: Today marks an exciting new chapter for Microsoft Gaming as OSHA Sharma steps into the role of CEO and I want to be the first to welcome her to this incredible team working with her over the past several months has given me tremendous confidence.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: She brings genuine curiosity, clarity, and a deep commitment to understanding players, creators, and the decisions that shape our future.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: We know this is an important moment for our fans, partners and team and we're committed to getting it right.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'll remain in an advisory role through the summer to support a smooth handoff.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm also grateful for the strength of our studios, organization, organization, mat booty, our studios, teams, continued, and our studios, teams continue to build an incredible portfolio.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: and I have full confidence in the leadership and creative momentum across our global studios I want to congratulate Matt on his promotion to EVP and Chief Content Officer.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: As part of this transition, Sarah Bond has decided to leave Microsoft to begin a new chapter.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: Sarah has been instrumental during a defining period for Xbox, shipping our platform strategy, expanding game paths and cloud gaming, supporting new hardware launches and guiding some of the most significant moments in our history.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm grateful for her partnership and the impact she's had.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: I wish for the very best in what comes next They definitely pushed her out.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like most of all to everyone in Microsoft gaming I want to say thank you.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: I've learned so much from this team and community growing alongside you and Been continually inspired by the creativity courage and carry you bring to players creators Creators and to one another every day
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm incredibly proud of what we built together over the last 25 years, and I have complete confidence in all of you, and in our opportunities ahead, I'll be cheering you on in the next chapter as Xbox's proudest fan and player, signing off Phil, P3.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lot of us knew that this was coming in some fashion, definitely, you know, it could have been sooner than we anticipated, but to me, it just makes sense.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like Xbox is getting stale and as much as I love Phil, I think that it was time for a change, and I think he's completely self-aware of that, too.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: I think that he meant well and I think that he had some great ideas and then, I don't know, I feel like towards the end it kind of just fell to the wayside, but, you know, yeah, I don't know.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's difficult.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how to feel about it because I think like Xbox is in a very tough position because
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: You know, yeah, they are the biggest publisher now across all platforms, which I think we'll talk about in one of the emails, but you know, it's unfortunate because I wish that Xbox was left in a better place and I feel like it's not and I don't, I don't think
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: Um, until I saw the quote from, or until I heard the quote from Asha Sharma, which I will read now.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so this is from Asha Sharma.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: This is a message she sent out to, uh, the whole organization, deer team.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Today I begin my role as CEO of Microsoft Gaming.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: I feel two things at once, humility and urgency.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: Emility because this team has built something extraordinary over decades, urgency because gaming is in a period of rapid change, and we need to move with clarity and conviction.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: I am stepping into work, shaped by generations of artist, engineers, designers, writers, musicians, operators, and more who create worlds that have brought joy and deep personal meaning to hundreds of millions of players.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: The level of craft here is exceptional, and it is amplified by Xbox, which was founded in the belief that the power of games connects people and pushes the industry forward.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you to Phil for his leadership and to every studio platform and operations team that built this foundation.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: We are stewards of some of the most loved stories and characters and entertainment and bring players and creators together around the fun and community of gaming and entirely new ways.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: My first job is simple, understand what it makes this work and protect it.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: That starts with three commitments.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: First, great games.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: Everything begins here.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: We must have great games beloved by players before we do anything.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: Unforgettable characters, stories that make us feel innovative and innovative gameplay and creative excellence.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: We will empower our studios, invest in iconic franchises, and back bold new ideas, we will take risk, we will enter new categories and markets wherever we can add real value.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: Grounded in what players care about most.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: I promoted Matt Boody and honor of this commitment.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: He understands the craft and challenges of building great games, has led teams that deliver award-winning work, and has earned the trust of game developers across the industry.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: Second, the return of Xbox.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: We will recommit to our core Xbox fans and players, those who have invested with us for the past 25 years, and to the developers who build expansive universes and experiences that are embraced by players across the world.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: We will celebrate our roots with a renowned commitment to Xbox starting with a console, which has shaped who we are.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: It connects us to the players and fans who invests in Xbox and to the developers who have build ambitious experiences for it.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: Gaming now lives across devices, not within the limits of a single piece of hardware, as we expand across PC, mobile, and cloud, Xbox should feel seamless, instant, and worthy of communities we serve.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: We will break down barriers, so developers can build once, and reach players everywhere without compromise.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: Third, future of play.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: We are witnessing the re-invention of play.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: To meet the moment, we will invent new business models and new ways to play by leaning into what we already have iconic teams, characters, worlds that people love and worlds that people love.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: But we will not treat the world as static IP to milk and monetize
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: We will build and build a shared platform in tools that empower developers and players to create and share their own stories.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: As monetization and AI evolve and influence this future, we will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with Solis AI Slop.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: games are and always will be art, crafted by humans and created with the most innovative technology provided by us.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: The next 25 years belong to the teams who dare to build something surprising.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: Something no one else is willing to try and have the patience to see it through.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: We have done this before and I'm here to help us do it again.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: I want to return to the renegade spirit that built Xbox in the first place.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: It will require us to relentlessly, relentlessly, excuse me, question everything, revisit processes, protect what works and be brave enough to change what does not.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for welcoming me into this journey.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's a picture of her with Matt Booty and behind them is Halo Studios with the
- 11:26[SPEAKER_00]: And what looks like, I'm like, wait a second, is there a PlayStation controller next to MCC?
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: Because I've been saying, oh no, wait, wait, hold on, I'm just saying that.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, it's I don't think it's PlayStation, but it sure is how it looks like it.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a tease.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think MCC should be on PlayStation So there we have it Phil Spencer's out.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'll show Sharma's in
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: I honestly don't know.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm pretty skeptical.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think her email is great.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously a mix of personality and then also corporate speak.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be an interesting road ahead.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think Fable looks great.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think fours of horizon five looks great.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think Halo campaign evolved is still a good decision, but I think it should have also included like an updated multiplayer suite of Halo Infinite or just something that brings a fresh experience for players who have already played Halo 1 and aren't interested in campaign evolved.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: The reason why I'm so happy about it is because it's a complete remake of the original as a anniversary kind of fell short and then also it was four player call-up, added content, it's on PlayStation, like I just think there's a lot that makes me happy about it.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that they should have done something else.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: We have gears where E-Day.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: We have amazing titles coming out.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: Eldest role 6 eventually.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_00]: Fallout 76, next gen update hopefully.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: There is things to be helpful for.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: I just, I don't want to lose Xbox as like a console.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: But I definitely think that they have a lot of ground to make, and I think the game path change was terrible as well when you think of it like the $30 pass now only adds like a Fortnite subscription like I think fall out first or ESO plus or any other games I have subscriptions from Xbox should also be like you can choose one because I think it's kind of stupid I pay for fall out first and game pass.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think they should just be bundled together and I think you should have that option.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: Cloud Gaming is great and Sarah Bond did do a really good job of that, you know, really spearheading that program Do you think game pass is the best way to go in gaming if you're a avid like gamer and you know Love to test out new games.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's fantastic
- 13:50[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I don't know.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's exciting.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's exciting and terrifying at the same time.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: But this is like huge news, like literally breaking news today.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: Um, if so, if you haven't heard about it, you know, that's fine.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: But let me know what you think about this.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: Are you excited?
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: Are you hopeful?
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: Are you scared?
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like in between.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: I don't, I'm like, I want to look forward to it.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: But at the same time, you know, when she talks about
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: like the franchises and not static IPs and AI slopp and not just monetizing product just with a hell of it i think halo comes to mind like what are we doing with halo like why don't we have more spin-offs and you know halo works three odst2 there's there's just a flood or survive a horror game like i don't know i feel like there's just money to be left on the table halo infinite definitely deserves a sequel
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: I would love to see what happens.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: I really do hope this is like turning a new page for Xbox and bringing it back to the 360 era in terms of just like straight bangers from the first party studios.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: Um, because third party content all day has been amazing the last few years.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I'd love to hear what you think about that.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to move on to Pokemon Fire and Leaf Green as I said, um, you know, with Wario and then
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: and it led Pokemon to just announcing it a week ahead of time.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm still convinced that that wasn't the plan.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was meant to be a shadow drop, which does kind of worry me a little bit because I've been waiting for Pokemon Call-CN to be a part of the GameCube Online program.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm still hoping that's the case, but talking about Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green,
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: They are straight ports of their original release.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: There's nothing different at all, which for some people is great, and others like myself it's not.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like don't get me wrong.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm happy a shit.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: I've already pre-ordered both of the versions, they're $20 each, we'll get into that price point in a second.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_00]: Um, on the eShop listing at one point, it did say Pokemon home compatibility and how it doesn't, so I think that it's not ready yet.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: Um, because that's basically how it was worded, is that it's compatible, which probably means like right out the gate, you can, you know, it's compatible when you launch the game.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's not the case, and that's going to get updated down the road, but I think of like not having like a fast forward system Not having the cut content, which is essentially just catching ho-o-m-u-d-oxys Lugia with the eon ticket and all that I think it not having that in there sucks because I think there'd be a fun experience for a lot of people, but
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: I still stand by the fact that like I think this is a fantastic decision because obviously they're going to do something canto we know when you have these anniversaries you kind of look back at what started it started it all especially like Pokemon and like they'd love to do that and I don't blame them and I think this was a great route to go because there's a lot less people that have played firehead and they've green versus red blue and yellow or red and green
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so I'm like, I'm just beyond thrilled with this decision.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I, I, it are my personal favorite games of all time.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: So obviously, I'm happy.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so yeah, if you are curious and you've never played them, I'm telling you right now.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: This is the best way to play it.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_00]: Um, there is still local wireless.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: So if you have any friends, kids, family members, people you want to play with.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_00]: Love ones, like you can still trade in battle in the game.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: You just can't do it over Wi-Fi.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I think that was a huge misstep as well.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think this game should have been retrofitted with online compatibility.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: Um, because it would have literally created a whole online community where people can have tournaments with Gen 3 settings.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's a massive missed opportunity or just people allowing people to trade with their friends around the world.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_00]: And, um, I think that that really sucks to be honest with you.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: Again, the fast-forward mode, just different options of accessibility or just different features that our emulators have which has been an interesting argument to which is kind of pissed me off essentially is that me and Brian, you know Brandon like whoever else we've talked about it with
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like, we weren't the only ones that have said, like, hey, you know, I hope they bring this back as a collection or Bring these games back so people can experience it for the first time and then now that they are people are but heard about it because it's can't so and it's like dude
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: either shit or get off the pot because these games are great that's the definitive way to play canto um i do hope they do ruby sapphire and emerald i hope to god they do i think that's a like a obvious decision that should be made especially since they did red blue yellow gold silver and crystal for uh 3ds so to me that seems like a obvious like a route to go especially with the call scheme and extigale a darkness already announced for game cue online
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you literally have the whole gen 3 collection there.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: So hopefully that's still the case, but definitely put your money where you're about this, you know, like, we've been, we've been asking for these kind of games to get ported, re-released Game Boy Advance online, whatever route they were going to go.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, they were never going to make them online, like Game Boy Advance online, because it's fucking money on the table that is just leaving there.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but I, I still wish they did like a gen 3 collection that had all the games on it, especially like the fan mock up of it, I think it looks great.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_00]: So, that's that.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: Um, the other thing is the price point.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's $20.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: They charged, I think, $10 for the GB games on 3DS for the virtual consoles.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_00]: So red blue yellow gold silver crystal.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: Um, these games are remasters or remakes of remasters of the originals.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: They have more content, they have more bigger pokedex, they have the battle tower, uh, in a set of islands, there's more here that I totally think justifies the price point.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_00]: I know an argument that's been made since they are basically the same games, the $20 price point.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know unless you emulate, which you are either here for it or you're not, I don't personally mind it.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: I own the physical cartridges, I emulate and now I just pre-order them for my switch.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: I want to be able to have all options to play this.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_00]: And the Switch 2 is slowly becoming like the console that has all of my favorite Nintendo content on it.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_00]: Which is crazy to think about because I swear to God We heard literally like a few N64 GBA and GameCube games away or like Twilight Princess HG for like all of my favorite Like Nintendo games all in one console, which is Honestly insane to think about This I mean I slept my three yes and stuff.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, so the price point is 20 bucks.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's 1999
- 20:42[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, people have an issue with it.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: I personally don't think 20 bucks is that bad.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_00]: You definitely don't need to buy both versions if that's not your thing.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think you're missing out.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_00]: You won't be able to complete the bugadex, obviously.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_00]: So hopefully you know someone.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_00]: But I think $20 is, there's enough content there.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_00]: But I still think that they really shut themselves in the foot, but not having those extra features and online compatibility, which is really stupid in my opinion and a little lazy.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: But I
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_00]: It does suck.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think if someone's to make that argument, I understand you and I agree with you Because what's the point of doing this if you're not going to go all in and I think going all in would be adding online adding the tickets for expanded, you know, legendary Pokédex
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I'm really bummed out about that, but I'm still excited to play the games for the Millieth Time.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think Pokemon Fire Red Leaf Green might be my most replayed games of all time, or Skyrim or Oblivion, but it's pretty ridiculous, so it's really high up there.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'm literally staring at my GB operator from Epilogue, which allows me to put my cartridge in my computer and play the ROM on my computer.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: Shining hunt a lot faster and all that so yeah, I don't know.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy Amazing news.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy that a prediction actually happened So now I want to say that I think champions is gonna get shadow dropped or a release date for summer because the next Pokemon event that's supposed to have champions is like six months away
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think Pokemon Coliseum comes out next week as well for GameCube, but I'm also hoping that that's still compatible somehow with Coliseum because that would be the icing on the cake.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_00]: That would actually make me like ignore the whole like a Wi-Fi and fast-forward.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: again let me know what your thoughts are like are you happy with this are you pissed off do you think it's a waste your money do you think it's uh lazy to do another canto game again i'm pretty sure we're gonna get Ruby sapphire and emerald it to me it doesn't make any sense to not do those games i think that'd be really stupid of them um
- 22:49[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, let me know what you think.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so happy right now.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you guys are listening to the episodes.
