Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Navigating Unexpected Turbulence With Grace
Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily Avadi here you are listening to another
- 0:19Speaker 1: installment of five Minute Friday.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Greetings from Mexico.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I am here for my first time ever, a little
- 0:28Speaker 1: trip to relax and wind down. I'm in Cabo San Lucas,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and wow. I don't know what took me so long
- 0:36Speaker 1: to get to Mexico. Maybe just because it's a little
- 0:39Speaker 1: farther than going to the Caribbean from the northeast, but
- 0:41Speaker 1: this place is absolutely stunning. For five Minute Friday this week,
- 0:46Speaker 1: I am talking to you about getting here, which was
- 0:49Speaker 1: a hurdle for sure. So I was supposed to leave
- 0:52Speaker 1: on Tuesday night. I get to the airport. I'm on
- 0:56Speaker 1: a night time flight around I don't know. I think
- 0:58Speaker 1: it was five point fifty, which is outside the box
- 1:00Speaker 1: for me, considering usually I do any international travel on
- 1:04Speaker 1: a flight that leaves like at the crack of dawn.
- 1:07Speaker 2: But I digress. So I'm on this evening flight.
- 1:09Speaker 1: It boards on time, they we leave the gate, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: right when we leave the gate, we get an announcement
- 1:15Speaker 1: that there's some bad weather coming in and it's gonna
- 1:17Speaker 1: be in the way of our flight pattern, and so
- 1:20Speaker 1: the decision is that we're gonna hold off on leaving,
- 1:24Speaker 1: so I don't mind. I actually miraculously I'm in a
- 1:27Speaker 1: row by myself. I'm like, I'm a turn on this movie.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna do some work. A couple hours go by,
- 1:34Speaker 1: a few announcements like we're still waiting, we'll give you
- 1:37Speaker 1: an update when we have one, et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Three hours go by, at like three and a half hours,
- 1:43Speaker 1: they let us know that there's a rule I believe
- 1:46Speaker 1: it is three hours domestically, four hours internationally is the
- 1:49Speaker 1: longest that you can wait on the tarmac before you
- 1:52Speaker 1: have to go back to the gate.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So they're sending us back to the gate.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So we go back to the date the gate, and
- 1:59Speaker 1: right as soon as we got to the gate, a
- 2:01Speaker 1: gate agent comes on and they are the person that
- 2:03Speaker 1: breaks the bad news to us that our flight is
- 2:06Speaker 1: now canceled and that it will we will not get out,
- 2:09Speaker 1: And you know what, like, okay, we will not get out.
- 2:12Speaker 2: That's the thing. So there's people growing on the plane.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Everyonets to a deep plane get off and I never
- 2:18Speaker 1: check a bag ever, ever, ever. But of course the
- 2:21Speaker 1: one time that I don't actually get to go at
- 2:24Speaker 1: least at that moment on my trip, I checked a bag,
- 2:27Speaker 1: so I had to go to baggage claim and get
- 2:29Speaker 1: my bag. It's like ten fifteen at night. Now I
- 2:32Speaker 1: am just like a zombie and super tired. It's funny
- 2:37Speaker 1: all of this, because I'll be honest, the entire time,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I wasn't really phased because, first of all, I hate turbulence,
- 2:43Speaker 1: like absolutely hate it. I don't know many people that
- 2:45Speaker 1: love turbulence, but I get a lot of anxiety, as
- 2:48Speaker 1: one may be able to understand. And so I was like,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you know what, I would rather be safe on this
- 2:53Speaker 1: runway than feel completely not safe and without any control
- 2:57Speaker 1: in the air as we're like getting jostled around by
- 2:59Speaker 1: some bad weather. And if you haven't traveled yet, you
- 3:03Speaker 1: may have read this, but there's been an increase in
- 3:06Speaker 1: crime and like issues on planes, and like flight attendants
- 3:09Speaker 1: are going back and getting more self defense training because
- 3:12Speaker 1: people are feeling some kind of way for the most
- 3:14Speaker 1: part about having to wear a mask for that long.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So I was thinking about, you know, the tension that
- 3:20Speaker 1: may be circulating in the air, so to speak, during
- 3:24Speaker 1: that long waiting time that we were on the plane
- 3:27Speaker 1: of people that were like a little frustrated and feeling
- 3:29Speaker 1: claustrophobic and getting a little anxious. Thankfully, like no one
- 3:32Speaker 1: was revolting. The whole plane was very well behaved. But
- 3:35Speaker 1: then you add in that these people like want to
- 3:38Speaker 1: get to this nice destination. It's getting later. It's getting later. Anyway,
- 3:41Speaker 1: it was super lucky no one acted out on the plane.
- 3:44Speaker 1: We all got off the plane, and I got so
- 3:46Speaker 1: many dms as I was like sharing this story. Oh
- 3:49Speaker 1: my god, it's so great that you didn't flip out,
- 3:52Speaker 1: like how are you not pissed right now? And again,
- 3:55Speaker 1: aside from being very content not dealing with the turbulence, irl,
- 4:00Speaker 1: I just realized that this was one of those things
- 4:03Speaker 1: that I had absolutely no control over, Like, it wasn't
- 4:05Speaker 1: the pilot's fault that there was bad weather, it.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Wasn't anyone's fault.
- 4:10Speaker 1: All that we could do was just navigate the situation
- 4:12Speaker 1: we best the best way that we could in that moment.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And I will definitely say that old Emily so to speak,
- 4:20Speaker 1: may not have handled it that well. You know, there
- 4:22Speaker 1: have been many things in the last couple of years
- 4:24Speaker 1: that I've realized I have kind of eased up a
- 4:27Speaker 1: little bit on and all I do now is just like, well,
- 4:32Speaker 1: this is how it is now. And I go back
- 4:34Speaker 1: to that saying time and time again. It's a famous
- 4:36Speaker 1: saying that Sarah Levy offered me, the founder of Y seven,
- 4:39Speaker 1: when her and I sat down for one of the
- 4:41Speaker 1: first episodes of Hurdle.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It's this is how it is now.
- 4:46Speaker 3: You.
- 4:46Speaker 1: It's never going to be like it was five minutes ago,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and it could be very different five minutes from now,
- 4:51Speaker 1: And the best thing that you can do is handle
- 4:53Speaker 1: whatever's going on in this moment to the best of
- 4:56Speaker 1: your ability. And so that's what I did with the
- 4:59Speaker 1: plane situation last week. I ended up getting on a
- 5:02Speaker 1: bright and early flight at seven fifteen in the morning
- 5:05Speaker 1: the next day on very little sleep. And now, as
- 5:09Speaker 1: I said, I'm here in Mexico and I couldn't be
- 5:12Speaker 1: more grateful. So just a little reminder, deal with what
- 5:16Speaker 1: you can control the controllable, and don't be too hard
- 5:18Speaker 1: on yourself if things don't go as you'd hoped or
- 5:21Speaker 1: you expected, because the best thing that you can do
- 5:24Speaker 1: in those situations is show up for yourself, have some grace,
- 5:27Speaker 1: and move forward with some kindness. My prompt for you
- 5:31Speaker 1: this week, when was the last time you had to
- 5:35Speaker 1: just accept things as they came, and what did you
- 5:39Speaker 1: learn from that situation? Again, prompt you this week, when
- 5:42Speaker 1: was the last time that you just had to accept
- 5:43Speaker 1: things as they came?
- 5:45Speaker 2: And what did you learn from that conversation?
- 5:48Speaker 1: I mentioned last week that I was going to stop
- 5:51Speaker 1: giving a complete download on my highlights and my content
- 5:54Speaker 1: picks regularly when it comes to the five minute Friday episodes.

- 6:16Speaker 1: of July if you're listening to this in twenty twenty one,

- 6:22Speaker 1: two dollars from fifty dollars, which is a big, big savings.

- 6:27Speaker 1: over to the Weekly Hurdle and get all the links,
- 6:30Speaker 1: all the information, snag yourself some good shorts because it's
- 6:33Speaker 1: hot out there no matter where you are right now
- 6:36Speaker 1: and now a listener question.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Hi Emily, it's Meg from New York City. My question
- 6:43Speaker 3: for you is if you could note a takeaway from
- 6:46Speaker 3: a conversation you've had last month that impacted or resonated
- 6:50Speaker 3: with you the most, what would.
- 6:51Speaker 1: It be, Oh, A good takeaway from a conversation. So
- 6:55Speaker 1: I guess this is an interesting one to pick here.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I brought this up my conversation with Rainie Howard on
- 7:02Speaker 1: relationships and the mistakes that some of us make when
- 7:06Speaker 1: looking for one. I went on a date, I want
- 7:08Speaker 1: to say it was about a month ago, and on
- 7:11Speaker 1: the date, the man asked me what my red flags were.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And I have thought about this question, this conversation so
- 7:20Speaker 1: much in the last you know, since then the date
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know, it was fine, it didn't work out, but
- 7:29Speaker 1: it really impacted me that question because it has me
- 7:34Speaker 1: thinking a lot about the way that I am in
- 7:37Speaker 1: relationships and my affinity to turn negatives into positives or
- 7:42Speaker 1: try to see the bright side of things. Because the
- 7:45Speaker 1: examples that I provided this person in the moment had
- 7:48Speaker 1: a lot to do with my work ethic and how
- 7:50Speaker 1: active I am, which I see as positives but could
- 7:56Speaker 1: be a negative if it comes to incorporating someone else
- 8:01Speaker 1: into my regular routine making time for them when I
- 8:04Speaker 1: also have these other priorities. Right, But I will say
- 8:07Speaker 1: this a little caveat here. I believe that for the
- 8:09Speaker 1: right person, you make it all work. Okay, Glad that
- 8:12Speaker 1: I said that. Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about that,
- 8:14Speaker 1: So I'll share the same question with you. What are
- 8:17Speaker 1: your red flags? We all have them. What is something
- 8:21Speaker 1: that you got to work on? That's it for this week.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I do want to pump up one more time, starting
- 8:25Speaker 1: this coming Monday, the Journaling Challenge Another journal conquered three
- 8:29Speaker 1: emails a week Monday, Wednesday Friday, exclusive twenty five percent
- 8:33Speaker 1: off Barren fig discount code, as well as access to
- 8:37Speaker 1: a group assume that we're going to be having in
- 8:39Speaker 1: August to talk about all of our takeaways. I mentioned
- 8:42Speaker 1: this a couple of weeks back. Journaling has been in
- 8:44Speaker 1: a little bit of a funk for me, so I'm
- 8:46Speaker 1: excited to get back in it with all of you
- 8:48Speaker 1: and have the support of the Stellar community as we
- 8:51Speaker 1: go along. We're going to be doing a lot of questions,
- 8:53Speaker 1: reflecting on self worth, goals, just good stuff to dive into.
- 8:59Speaker 2: So really excited about this. Would love to have you
- 9:01Speaker 2: in on that.
- 9:02Speaker 1: To join in on the challenge, you've got to be

- 9:07Speaker 1: on how to join in, I'll put a link in
