- 0:04Speaker 1: The newest member of Dodger's Territory. She's been on the
- 0:06Speaker 1: show now for about a month and change, but covering
- 0:09Speaker 1: the team out there and covering the first real games
- 0:12Speaker 1: for the Dodgers of the twenty twenty six season. Katie
- 0:14Speaker 1: Woo joining us right now. Katie, great to have you
- 0:16Speaker 1: on and great to have you part of Dodgers' Territory.
- 0:20Speaker 1: If you don't mind, I would like to start with
- 0:23Speaker 1: the social media controversy because one of the things that
- 0:26Speaker 1: really made this network special is that we can cover
- 0:29Speaker 1: what everyone's talking about online. The Dodgers winning, sweeping, all
- 0:33Speaker 1: the festivities, that's all cool. Is there really a story
- 0:36Speaker 1: to the team kind of switching things up for Edwin
- 0:40Speaker 1: Diaz with a remix of the song and fans liking
- 0:43Speaker 1: it are not liking it because online fans are going crazy.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I just can't tell if those fans are bitter Mets fans.
- 0:50Speaker 1: So your thoughts.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So, I actually was not sure what the controversy was
- 0:54Speaker 2: for a second, and I was like, oh my gosh,
- 0:56Speaker 2: what did I miss? But now this makes more sense. Also,
- 1:00Speaker 2: very nice to see you guys. I noticed no Aj
- 1:02Speaker 2: Persinski yet again, not surprised, just disappointed, but certainly very
- 1:08Speaker 2: happy to be with you guys. Let's talk. Let's talk
- 1:10Speaker 2: to Edwin Diaz. If I was a Mets fan, I
- 1:13Speaker 2: would be disappointed too, so I get it. I'd be
- 1:15Speaker 2: maybe a little bitter. I actually think the Dodgers entrance
- 1:18Speaker 2: is really sick. They brought in Chatana Tate, a Los
- 1:22Speaker 2: Angeles based musician. She works with DOCI very accomplished to
- 1:25Speaker 2: do a live trumpet performance both nights. The bullpen catchers
- 1:30Speaker 2: and the training staff. They actually brought in many trumpets
- 1:32Speaker 2: of their own and they play kind of like how
- 1:34Speaker 2: mister and missus Met did as Edwin is running in
- 1:38Speaker 2: and the stadium loved it. I mean it was I
- 1:40Speaker 2: was excited as an objective member of the media to
- 1:43Speaker 2: see Edwin Diaz come in the first time at Dodgers Stadium.
- 1:46Speaker 2: So I think it's really cool. I think the Dodgers
- 1:48Speaker 2: might have more things planned. Edwin Diaz loved it. The
- 1:51Speaker 2: team loved it. The first when you hear the first
- 1:53Speaker 2: kind of drums, the beat drop, and you're just waiting
- 1:56Speaker 2: for the trumpets, the lights go down. He's running in.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Not since like can Jansen California love have the Dodgers
- 2:02Speaker 2: had just insane entrance like that. So Mets fans, I
- 2:07Speaker 2: get it, I do, But I don't think there's a
- 2:08Speaker 2: lot of controversy here. I actually think the entrance is
- 2:11Speaker 2: pretty electric.
- 2:14Speaker 3: I want to talk about Roki Sasaki coming in now,
- 2:16Speaker 3: He's got his first star coming up. Spring training wasn't
- 2:20Speaker 3: the best. Uh do we look into this a little
- 2:24Speaker 3: bit more or is it just him trying to tinker
- 2:26Speaker 3: with things, trying new pitches, maybe, you know, not showing
- 2:30Speaker 3: his what he really wanted to do with his full arsenal.
- 2:33Speaker 3: So this is a big one coming up here to
- 2:35Speaker 3: kind of ease all Dodger nation, you know a little bit.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, we were definitely. I usually am like, let's pump
- 2:42Speaker 2: the brake spring training and spring training, but this case
- 2:45Speaker 2: is a little different. It was not a break for
- 2:48Speaker 2: Roki Sasaki, and his troubles were kind of all over
- 2:51Speaker 2: the place. It was an erratic command. Couldn't establish the fastball.
- 2:54Speaker 2: He's working on that third pitch to his arsenal, but
- 2:55Speaker 2: that's really hard to do when you can't really command
- 2:58Speaker 2: the first two pitches in your arsenal. Kind of out
- 3:00Speaker 2: of sync, just kind of lost. Now the Dodgers have
- 3:03Speaker 2: the benefit of the doubt and saying where the Dodgers
- 3:05Speaker 2: and everything's fine, But let's read behind the lines. Rokiy
- 3:08Speaker 2: Sasaki is making his first start today. There was never
- 3:10Speaker 2: a question, even through all the trials and tribulations of spring,
- 3:14Speaker 2: that he wouldn't be in the rotation. And I can
- 3:16Speaker 2: understand a picture with that degree that high of stealing
- 3:20Speaker 2: should give it should have every chance to be a
- 3:23Speaker 2: starting pitcher in the big leagues. But we haven't seen
- 3:26Speaker 2: Justin Robleski yet for a reason, and the Dodgers have
- 3:29Speaker 2: said that they're going to start the season with using
- 3:31Speaker 2: kind of a six man hybrid rotation. Justin Rableski very
- 3:34Speaker 2: good spring will be in that piggyback role that is
- 3:38Speaker 2: designed for the In case rokiy Sasaki looks like spring training,
- 3:42Speaker 2: here comes Justin Rabluski to the rescue. And the Dodgers
- 3:44Speaker 2: have not said that they've played it kind of koi.
- 3:46Speaker 2: But let's read between the lines. Roki Susaki through a
- 3:49Speaker 2: bullpen on Saturday, regularly scheduled. You know who else threw
- 3:52Speaker 2: a bullpen on Saturday, gentlemen, Justin Rableski. So the Dodgers
- 3:56Speaker 2: are right to say, let's calm down, it's just spring training.
- 3:59Speaker 2: We believe in rokises. Of course they're going to say
- 4:01Speaker 2: that about their guy, but what's going on behind the
- 4:03Speaker 2: scenes will tell you that, you know there is some concern.
- 4:06Speaker 2: And they're also correct to do that, because if the
- 4:08Speaker 2: Dodgers go out there and don't have a backup plan
- 4:10Speaker 2: because Roki has really not given them anything to be
- 4:13Speaker 2: confident about, then that's kind of just organization malpractice. So
- 4:16Speaker 2: we'll see Roki Sasaki. If it does not go well,
- 4:19Speaker 2: Dave Roberts will not hesitate to get to the bullpen
- 4:21Speaker 2: for Justin Rabbleski. And the whole reason they had a
- 4:23Speaker 2: hybrid pitcher kind of to start was because they weren't
- 4:27Speaker 2: sure about show Hayo Tani's pitching progression coming back from
- 4:29Speaker 2: the WBC. The good news there es looked fantastic since
- 4:33Speaker 2: coming back, so we should see a full strength show
- 4:35Speaker 2: hey on Tuesday. But they got to get through Monday first,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and that's where Justin Rabluski comes in.
- 4:41Speaker 4: All Right, I'm big into conspiracy theories, so tell me
- 4:45Speaker 4: if I'm wrong or way off, or I'm maybe pretty
- 4:49Speaker 4: close on this one. Roki Sasaki came over from Japan.
- 4:53Speaker 4: The Dodgers would love to keep their fingerprint, their not
- 4:57Speaker 4: even fingerprint, their stamp in Japan, bringing the best players
- 5:02Speaker 4: over because no other team really had a shot at
- 5:05Speaker 4: getting Rokie Sasaki.
- 5:06Speaker 5: As much as everyone says.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Do you feel like maybe this is an automatic? Hey,
- 5:12Speaker 4: he was going to start no matter what, because hey,
- 5:15Speaker 4: we don't want to ruin our foothold in Japan with
- 5:18Speaker 4: other pitchers that are over there. If they see a
- 5:20Speaker 4: player comes over, has a little bit of struggles and
- 5:23Speaker 4: then gets sent to TRIPLEA, this doesn't look good for us.
- 5:28Speaker 2: So I love a conspiracy theory too, but I don't
- 5:30Speaker 2: think that's the case necessarily in this stance, because you
- 5:33Speaker 2: look at where the Dodgers are, Sasaki coming back and
- 5:36Speaker 2: doing what he did in the postseason. They don't have
- 5:37Speaker 2: their second in a row World Series championship if Sasaki
- 5:40Speaker 2: doesn't come out of the bullpen the way that he did.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But thirty minutes after the Dodgers won the World Series,
- 5:45Speaker 2: President Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman is on the field at
- 5:48Speaker 2: Rogers Center, got a question about what Sasaki's role will
- 5:50Speaker 2: be next year, and he said a starter. And the
- 5:53Speaker 2: reason for that is again because of the potential, the
- 5:55Speaker 2: high ceiling, the skill set. This is one of the
- 5:57Speaker 2: best pitchers to come out of Japan. I think there
- 5:59Speaker 2: was more hype around him than there was Yamamoto. Baseball's
- 6:01Speaker 2: a crazy sport because look at Yamamoto now. And that's
- 6:04Speaker 2: given all of Yamamoto's accomplishments in Japan as well. But
- 6:07Speaker 2: if you're the Dodgers and we're looking at the actual
- 6:09Speaker 2: logistics of their rotation, Blake Snell is on the il,
- 6:12Speaker 2: Gavin Stone is on the il outside of River Ryan,
- 6:15Speaker 2: who had a great spring, but it's coming off of
- 6:17Speaker 2: TJ and the Dodgers are right to monitor his innians limit.
- 6:19Speaker 2: He's in triple A right now. They don't really have
- 6:22Speaker 2: a lot of depth in their rotation that they feel
- 6:24Speaker 2: comfortable pushing in March and April. Now, the Dodgers do
- 6:27Speaker 2: have a depth in general, especially compared to other teams,
- 6:30Speaker 2: but with Snell and Gavin Stone out, that kind of
- 6:32Speaker 2: puts the onus on Roki to be in the rotation
- 6:34Speaker 2: no matter what because they need him, especially with the
- 6:37Speaker 2: aforementioned point of them not knowing what Shoeotani would look
- 6:42Speaker 2: like after the WBC SO Day one of spring training
- 6:45Speaker 2: Dave Roberts. Roki Sasaki is going to be in the
- 6:47Speaker 2: rotation that was the same case after every single bad start,
- 6:51Speaker 2: because quite frankly, they need him. They're lucky to have
- 6:54Speaker 2: Justin Robleski available to be in that piggyback role. But
- 6:57Speaker 2: you're doing everybody on the team, especially society, a disservice
- 7:00Speaker 2: by not starting him at least giving him two to
- 7:03Speaker 2: three starts to prove that Spring was an anomaly. If
- 7:05Speaker 2: we're still having this conversation in mid April and Justin
- 7:08Speaker 2: Erbluski looks as good as he did in Spring, then
- 7:10Speaker 2: I think it's pretty obvious to make that switch. But
- 7:12Speaker 2: right now, given where each picture is in the Dodgers'
- 7:15Speaker 2: depth chart, necessarily it makes sense to have Sasak come
- 7:19Speaker 2: in the rotation.
- 7:22Speaker 6: This one's for the dudes looking for that peak bedroom performance.

- 8:21Speaker 3: Another guy, Will Smith. You talked a little about him
- 8:24Speaker 3: on Twitter. It looks like here X, excuse me, how
- 8:29Speaker 3: clutch of an athlete he is, how awesome he is.
- 8:33Speaker 3: And for me, I feel like people know about him,
- 8:36Speaker 3: but do they really know about how good of a
- 8:39Speaker 3: baseball player he is. I feel like it goes unnoticed,
- 8:41Speaker 3: maybe because I'm on the East Coast and it's out
- 8:43Speaker 3: on the West coast. I know the West coast knows,
- 8:45Speaker 3: but talk a little bit about him and just how
- 8:47Speaker 3: clutch this guy really is.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I forget who said it after Saturday's game, but
- 8:53Speaker 2: someone's asked if he was Will Smith was the most
- 8:55Speaker 2: like underrated clutch player in baseball, And I think there's
- 8:59Speaker 2: a really good argument to be made there because this dude,
- 9:01Speaker 2: I think he said fifty three go ahead homers and
- 9:03Speaker 2: the regular season in his career, and that's not even
- 9:06Speaker 2: counting in all of his postseason accolades. And we were
- 9:09Speaker 2: talking to Will after the game, you know, birthday Bobblehead.
- 9:12Speaker 2: It's kind of just a given that he was going
- 9:13Speaker 2: to have a game like that, go ahead homer in
- 9:16Speaker 2: the eighth, win the game. He was just like, I'm
- 9:19Speaker 2: just calm in those situations, and I think Will Smith
- 9:21Speaker 2: has an innate ability to slow the game down. And
- 9:24Speaker 2: you're right that. I think maybe it does go under
- 9:27Speaker 2: the radar for a lot of baseball. Maybe it is
- 9:29Speaker 2: the West Coast, maybe it's just because of the amount
- 9:32Speaker 2: of sheer stars on that team, but Will Smith is
- 9:34Speaker 2: very much a member of that star group, and it
- 9:37Speaker 2: goes just again under the radar because maybe people just
- 9:40Speaker 2: expect the Dodgers to do this. I know I certainly do.
- 9:44Speaker 2: All three games, the Dodgers were trailing two to nothing
- 9:46Speaker 2: at some point the last two of the series. They
- 9:48Speaker 2: were trailing two nothing in the eighth, Guys, I didn't
- 9:50Speaker 2: even start writing my story because I knew that lead
- 9:53Speaker 2: wouldn't hold. That's just what the Dodgers do. They just
- 9:56Speaker 2: win baseball games. And when you have a player likes
- 9:58Speaker 2: Will Smith, and honestly, he kind of emblematic of the
- 10:00Speaker 2: whole lineup. He's so patient. He spoils pitches, he trusts
- 10:04Speaker 2: his swing. He has the speed where he can foul off,
- 10:07Speaker 2: spoil off the off speed and wait for the fastball
- 10:09Speaker 2: because he knows his swing is fast enough to catch
- 10:11Speaker 2: up to one hundred when he gets it. That's kind
- 10:13Speaker 2: of the Dodgers all around. They know their swing, they
- 10:16Speaker 2: know a pitch they want, and they know they're going
- 10:19Speaker 2: to get on base and score, and it just kind
- 10:21Speaker 2: of takes all the pressure out of it. Will Smith
- 10:23Speaker 2: is the perfect example of that all.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Right overreaction, which is more of an overreaction. The Dodgers
- 10:28Speaker 4: will win one hundred and twenty games, or Kyle Tucker
- 10:32Speaker 4: will hit below two thirty this year.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Oh, Kyle Tucker is that's an over He's he's He's
- 10:39Speaker 2: a perfect Dodger. I mean, he's done everything that the
- 10:42Speaker 2: Dodgers need him to do already. I love that moment
- 10:45Speaker 2: for him on Friday's win, delivering that key hit to
- 10:47Speaker 2: win the game and then sets the table for ed
- 10:49Speaker 2: the Edwin Diaz first save opportunity. The Dodgers could though
- 10:53Speaker 2: very much. You know, when you say one twenty, you're
- 10:55Speaker 2: just kind of like, come on, nobody does that, And
- 10:57Speaker 2: after three games you're like, maybe this team, maybe this
- 11:01Speaker 2: team can do that. But as far as what Kyle
- 11:03Speaker 2: Tucker has brought early returns, I mean, he is the
- 11:06Speaker 2: number two hitter on the best lineup in baseball, and
- 11:10Speaker 2: what that's really allowed to do. I think Mookie Betts
- 11:13Speaker 2: really enjoys me in the three hole now and it's
- 11:15Speaker 2: kind of slotted everybody down. Friddy Freeman is hitting fifth
- 11:18Speaker 2: against lefties. That's never really happened in his career before.
- 11:21Speaker 2: It just elongates that lineup and makes it so much
- 11:23Speaker 2: more dangerous. I think we're going to see a huge
- 11:25Speaker 2: year out of Kyle Tucker, and I think we're going
- 11:27Speaker 2: to get baseball is going to maybe twenty nine. Other
- 11:30Speaker 2: fan bases are going to get very tired of seeing
- 11:33Speaker 2: the same headline over and over.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Dodgers win all right, Well, I want to I want
- 11:37Speaker 4: a little for those on the podcast crowd. I'm drinking
- 11:40Speaker 4: some water, but this is Katie Woo drinking the kool
- 11:43Speaker 4: aid and dog.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Mean, you've been there for, you've been there for.
- 11:50Speaker 4: You've been there for like three minutes and you're already
- 11:52Speaker 4: sounding like Alana Rizzo.
- 11:54Speaker 6: But either way, hear me out.
- 11:58Speaker 2: I am watching a different rent level of baseball, and
- 12:01Speaker 2: there's I have so much respect for the Saint Louis Cardinals,
- 12:03Speaker 2: where you know, I spent the last five years and
- 12:06Speaker 2: they're rebuilding and it's just a different quality of baseball
- 12:09Speaker 2: and I'm enjoying seeing come from behind wins. So you know,
- 12:13Speaker 2: we can circle back in May. Maybe Rochie does have
- 12:17Speaker 2: a horrendous April, or maybe that pitching up isn't as
- 12:19Speaker 2: deep as we think. Maybe some guys slump. I personally
- 12:22Speaker 2: just don't see it. I'm high on life. Guys. It's
- 12:24Speaker 2: March thirtieth. Let's let's live a little.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I love that.
- 12:27Speaker 5: What what is their weakness?
- 12:30Speaker 4: What is their weakness? Because when you look at the
- 12:31Speaker 4: lineup as a non like you don't, I don't watch
- 12:34Speaker 4: the Dodgers every day. You watch the lineup and you're like,
- 12:37Speaker 4: I I was feeling for Zack Gown. Zack Gown I
- 12:39Speaker 4: think is a really good picture. But the first night
- 12:42Speaker 4: he's out there and it's like a Hi, we got this,
- 12:44Speaker 4: and then Miguel Rojas gets a hit and you're like, oh, crap,
- 12:47Speaker 4: back to the top of the order again. So what
- 12:49Speaker 4: is the weakness of this team?
- 12:52Speaker 2: Yeah, no kidding, face that lineup third time through at
- 12:54Speaker 2: your own risk. Even Andy Pa has a star. But
- 12:58Speaker 2: I think the weakness does go. It's health, specifically with
- 13:01Speaker 2: that rotation. Blake Snell. I don't think there's a true
- 13:05Speaker 2: timetable for him. Maybe mid May earlier would be better
- 13:09Speaker 2: for the Dodgers. But if you have one more starter
- 13:11Speaker 2: kind of hit the IL or have a setback, it
- 13:13Speaker 2: becomes a little dicey because they do have guys they
- 13:15Speaker 2: can use again. You can use Rableski and I think
- 13:17Speaker 2: we're going to see him as a starter a lot.
- 13:20Speaker 2: You can use River Ryan, but you really want to
- 13:22Speaker 2: be cautious coming back from TJ and you don't want
- 13:25Speaker 2: to overuse him, especially early in the season when pitching
- 13:27Speaker 2: injuries are the most common for that time of year.
- 13:30Speaker 2: And Emma Chian I don't want to nitpick after one start,
- 13:34Speaker 2: but the villa has been a little down, and there's
- 13:36Speaker 2: hasn't been a lot of command or sustainability of the stuff.
- 13:40Speaker 2: First inning has looked great, second third for the command
- 13:43Speaker 2: or the villo has dropped a little bit. So if
- 13:45Speaker 2: I'm nitpicking there, I think the weakness of this Dodgers
- 13:49Speaker 2: team would be just making sure that the starting pitching
- 13:51Speaker 2: stays healthy. Before the season started, I would have said
- 13:53Speaker 2: the bullpen. But the bullpen is through eleven and two
- 13:55Speaker 2: thirds scorelessenings, so maybe not. But I do think it
- 14:00Speaker 2: comes down to pitching health and keeping that rotation healthy,
- 14:02Speaker 2: because if the rotation isn't healthy, you start overtaxing the bullpen,
- 14:06Speaker 2: and that's what the Dodgers did last year and it
- 14:08Speaker 2: did create a lot of problems down the stretch for them.
- 14:10Speaker 2: So it's kind of a cop out to say health
- 14:12Speaker 2: because all thirty teams need health, but for this Dodgers
- 14:15Speaker 2: team in particular, the rotation is so so important. It
- 14:18Speaker 2: has the potential to be one of the best they've
- 14:20Speaker 2: ever assembled if they can stay healthy, because right now
- 14:23Speaker 2: the depth is a little thinner than I think most
- 14:25Speaker 2: people perceive.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Hi, Katie, last question, We're at the end of March
- 14:30Speaker 4: right now. Before you were in Saint Louis. Compare Saint
- 14:34Speaker 4: Louis the end of March to LA at the end
- 14:37Speaker 4: of March. Is that why you have the glowing, effervescent
- 14:40Speaker 4: smile that.
- 14:41Speaker 5: You have today.
- 14:43Speaker 2: No, I'm just happy to be here with you guys. Well,
- 14:45Speaker 2: I did tan yesterday, so that probably helps. That's the
- 14:47Speaker 2: biggest difference. I went to the beach on our random
- 14:51Speaker 2: Sunday off day yesterday, where that would not have been
- 14:54Speaker 2: the case late March in Saint Louis. But I do
- 14:58Speaker 2: miss that town and I'm excited for what's next here
- 15:02Speaker 2: in LA obviously. And yeah, I mean I'm looking out
- 15:05Speaker 2: right now, a little coastal breeze coming in through my
- 15:08Speaker 2: open window. I would not have an open window for
- 15:10Speaker 2: like ten months out of the year in Saint Louis,
- 15:12Speaker 2: so there's a plus there.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Yeah, those are facts that go beyond baseball, and there's
- 15:17Speaker 1: really not much that's going to change on that front.
- 15:19Speaker 1: The weather is the weather. So Katie, well, it's great
- 15:22Speaker 1: to see you. Thank you for joining us. We'll be
- 15:24Speaker 1: talking again soon and everyone go check out Katie on Dodgers' territory.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And all the articles that she's rolling on the Athletic
- 15:30Speaker 1: Talk Soon.
- 15:31Speaker 2: You got it, guys, thank you, thank you.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Yes, Dodgers Territory with Clint, Alana, Katie and many special
- 15:39Speaker 1: guests throughout the season. They are so good at what
- 15:42Speaker 1: they do part of the FT Networks if you want
- 15:44Speaker 1: more on the Dodgers. Just reminding everyone we have tons
- 15:48Speaker 1: of shows on the FT Network. This is one of
- 15:49Speaker 1: the originals and it's great. The host of our new
- 15:54Speaker 1: Brewers show, which we're very excited about Brewer Territory, Kurt.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Great to have you on more of the same basically
- 16:00Speaker 1: from the Brewers going back to the last regular season.
- 16:03Speaker 1: So some up what you saw and you can of
- 16:05Speaker 1: course include the great comeback win for them over what
- 16:08Speaker 1: you know, some people think it's going to be a
- 16:09Speaker 1: better White Sox team, but the Brewers made them look
- 16:12Speaker 1: like they were a level down.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Yeah, you said, it was more of the same. They
- 16:18Speaker 5: kind of were pesky for three straight games. They drew
- 16:21Speaker 5: ten walks on opening day, they put up i think
- 16:24Speaker 5: six runs then in the second game, and then obviously
- 16:26Speaker 5: had a six run eighth inning yesterday. Christian Yelich with
- 16:30Speaker 5: the big homer. It wasn't just the homer, though, it
- 16:32Speaker 5: was South Freely having nine pitch at bats. It was
- 16:36Speaker 5: Blake Perkins, you know, drawing a walk in a big spot,
- 16:39Speaker 5: Luis ran Heifo getting that eighth inning two, Christian Yelich
- 16:43Speaker 5: with with a big hit. So this this is what
- 16:46Speaker 5: we saw from them last year when they won ninety
- 16:48Speaker 5: seven games. So it's not entirely surprising considering the lineups
- 16:51Speaker 5: basically the same as last year, but it was it
- 16:54Speaker 5: was still an impressive offensive performance. You know, you can
- 16:57Speaker 5: put the White Sox caveat on there, but look like
- 17:00Speaker 5: they had good They threw good arm Shane Smith's a
- 17:02Speaker 5: good arm k from the left side. Look good. They've
- 17:04Speaker 5: got some nasty dudes in the bullpen. So you know,
- 17:07Speaker 5: what else do you want him to do besides beat
- 17:09Speaker 5: up on the White Sox.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Yeah, that's very true. I want to talk about one
- 17:13Speaker 3: guy in particular, the miz talk about him a little
- 17:17Speaker 3: bit and explain how the Brewers if he gets the
- 17:19Speaker 3: performances like that, it's going to be a really good
- 17:22Speaker 3: season for them.
- 17:23Speaker 5: Yeah. And the crazy thing and Corey Cainnabel and I
- 17:26Speaker 5: were talking about this on our live show after Opening
- 17:29Speaker 5: Day on ber territory was like he struck out eleven guys.
- 17:32Speaker 5: He gave up one run on the leadoff homer, and
- 17:34Speaker 5: it wasn't even the most dominant or even close to
- 17:37Speaker 5: the most dominant we've seen from his pure stuff. There
- 17:41Speaker 5: was some bouts with the control a little bit. We've
- 17:44Speaker 5: seen that with him. The fastball wasn't quite popping at
- 17:48Speaker 5: one hundred and one oh one. He was kind of
- 17:49Speaker 5: living in that ninety seven ninety eight range and still
- 17:53Speaker 5: got I think like nineteen or twenty whiffs on the fastball.
- 17:56Speaker 5: So I think that's an encouraging sign because there's going
- 18:00Speaker 5: to be a lot on this guy's shoulders this season.
- 18:02Speaker 5: It's a young, inexperienced rotation. We saw that with Brandon
- 18:04Speaker 5: Sproden Sunday's game. He got hit around pretty hard. So
- 18:08Speaker 5: MS is gonna have to find ways to be a pitcher,
- 18:10Speaker 5: to work deeper into games and maybe not always just
- 18:14Speaker 5: overpower guys with one hundred and find different ways to
- 18:19Speaker 5: slice and dice you up.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Hi, christian Yalwich, you mentioned his big three run homer
- 18:23Speaker 4: that put him over the top in the eighth. He's
- 18:26Speaker 4: six for ten for the weekend. I know we're a
- 18:29Speaker 4: lot of overreactions. But my question to you is, starts
- 18:33Speaker 4: out six for ten. Is there a world where he's
- 18:37Speaker 4: a more successful player if he only plays one hundred
- 18:40Speaker 4: and thirty five games? And will Christian Yelich allow Murph
- 18:44Speaker 4: to only put him in for one hundred and thirty
- 18:46Speaker 4: five games or is it fine if he just plays
- 18:48Speaker 4: one hundred and sixty two and see if he blows out.
- 18:52Speaker 5: I think it's somewhere in the middle one hundred and
- 18:54Speaker 5: thirty five for a guy like Yelich who takes his
- 18:57Speaker 5: role seriously, takes his contract in Milwaukee seriously. If he's healthy,
- 19:03Speaker 5: it's not going to be one sixty. But whether it's
- 19:05Speaker 5: pinchit opportunities like the one he had yesterday, or just
- 19:10Speaker 5: you know, playing at DH just about every day, he'll
- 19:13Speaker 5: probably land in the one forty five to one fifty range.
- 19:16Speaker 5: They like to find their days for him. You know,
- 19:18Speaker 5: when they're healthy. They have plenty of depth, so you
- 19:20Speaker 5: can pick a spot against the lefty here, pick a
- 19:22Speaker 5: spot there, and you don't have to play him in
- 19:25Speaker 5: the field too much. But it's interesting because like this
- 19:28Speaker 5: spring this maybe goes to show you how much spring
- 19:31Speaker 5: training matter is. Actually it definitely goes to show you
- 19:33Speaker 5: how much spring training matters to veteran guys like this.
- 19:35Speaker 5: He was searching for it, like going back between the
- 19:38Speaker 5: old leg kick krats, you know that one. You saw
- 19:41Speaker 5: that one up close, the leg kick, and then he's
- 19:43Speaker 5: been doing the toe tap recently, so he was kind
- 19:45Speaker 5: of work shopping with Dan vogelback like what do I
- 19:48Speaker 5: want to do here? And it didn't look good the spring.
- 19:52Speaker 5: The timing was off. He he had I think, like
- 19:54Speaker 5: two hits all spring, and then it comes up with
- 19:58Speaker 5: with maybe what's going to be the moment of the
- 19:59Speaker 5: regular season already on day three with the with the homer,
- 20:02Speaker 5: and you kind of saw some of that that. I
- 20:05Speaker 5: don't know if it's frustration, but like there was some
- 20:07Speaker 5: emotion on the homer yesterday where he had the bat drop.
- 20:10Speaker 5: He kind of just stared at it, stared into the
- 20:12Speaker 5: dugout and you don't see that a ton from him.
- 20:13Speaker 5: So it clearly meant something to him to hit that
- 20:17Speaker 5: homer yesterday. Every every one of the games means something
- 20:21Speaker 5: to Christiano.
- 20:22Speaker 4: That's why the dudes played for years with back pain
- 20:24Speaker 4: and finally needed to get back surgery. But anyway, we're
- 20:27Speaker 4: gonna go on to other injuries. Andrew Vaughn now out
- 20:31Speaker 4: with the Hamdmaid and obviously Jackson Cheerio out. Is there
- 20:36Speaker 4: a world where there's an injury to this lineup that says, ugh, like,
- 20:42Speaker 4: this is a little too much, because when Jackson Cheerio's out,
- 20:45Speaker 4: I don't care who you put in there. Blake Perkins
- 20:49Speaker 4: can't be Jackson Cherio for an entire season. But is
- 20:52Speaker 4: there a world where they say, Okay, this injury is
- 20:56Speaker 4: the one that's gonna break our back because now they're
- 20:59Speaker 4: calling up a third cat. Sure, Gary Sanchaz hits a
- 21:01Speaker 4: Homer on Sunday, so you're like, of course, of course
- 21:05Speaker 4: everything can just continue to go the Brewer's way.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I don't think this. I think the
- 21:12Speaker 5: way this offense is is there's no singular injury that
- 21:15Speaker 5: would break them jet. When you have Chario down and
- 21:18Speaker 5: when you have Von down, it's at that point where
- 21:20Speaker 5: you're like, okay, if one of these guys goes down
- 21:24Speaker 5: and you start to think about, you know, some of
- 21:27Speaker 5: the spots where they don't have as much depth, where
- 21:29Speaker 5: whether it's Bryce terrang or William Contrero's those are probably
- 21:32Speaker 5: the two biggest guys where it's like they need them
- 21:35Speaker 5: as much as they can to play as much as
- 21:38Speaker 5: they can, and those guys have been generally healthy so far.
- 21:41Speaker 5: That's where this offense is at. But like like you said, Kratz,
- 21:47Speaker 5: this is the Brewers they have. I think they're like
- 21:49Speaker 5: twenty two and eight with Cherio on the injured list
- 21:53Speaker 5: the last two years. Some of that is, you know,
- 21:55Speaker 5: good luck, and some of it is this is what
- 21:59Speaker 5: this is what happened, and they have a system in
- 22:02Speaker 5: place and you call the next guy up and somehow, someway,
- 22:06Speaker 5: you just keep winning ball games by a combination of
- 22:08Speaker 5: the way they play offense and base running and good
- 22:12Speaker 5: defense and then generally good pitching.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Was it Jackson Curio il stint a surprise because of
- 22:18Speaker 4: the fact that it happened in their exhibition WBC games
- 22:22Speaker 4: and then all of a sudden, bang were read at
- 22:24Speaker 4: the start of the season and he goes on the.
- 22:26Speaker 5: IL, Yeah, this wasn't great, not great, because you know,
- 22:30Speaker 5: we were down in spring training as asking Murph about it,
- 22:33Speaker 5: and he was joking I should use air quotes with that,
- 22:36Speaker 5: because I don't know how much of it was really
- 22:37Speaker 5: joke where he was like texting the you know, Venezuela
- 22:40Speaker 5: or the front office or whatever, send him home. And
- 22:44Speaker 5: at the time they you know, they did X rays
- 22:46Speaker 5: on the hand and there was nothing. And then he
- 22:48Speaker 5: came back to the Brewers spring training. At the very
- 22:50Speaker 5: end did x rays. All seemed like a bruise, but
- 22:53Speaker 5: further imaging for all the doctors in the house revealed
- 22:56Speaker 5: a hairline fracture. And they didn't do that until after
- 23:00Speaker 5: the exhibition games last week when his hands started to hurt.
- 23:02Speaker 5: So yeah, definitely a surprise, and definitely you know, like
- 23:06Speaker 5: like it's not the WBC's fault that he got hurt.
- 23:08Speaker 5: This stuff's gonna happen in spring training game. Guys are
- 23:10Speaker 5: going to get hit in the hand. He did get
- 23:12Speaker 5: hit in a spring training game. It was an exhibition
- 23:14Speaker 5: game against I think the Nationals. So this stuff is
- 23:19Speaker 5: going to happen. But it's not optimal that he then
- 23:22Speaker 5: played three weeks on it. From a Brewer standpoint, obviously,
- 23:27Speaker 5: I think if you're asking Churio or anyone from Venezuela,
- 23:30Speaker 5: they are like, yeah, that's fine, that's that's a fair
- 23:32Speaker 5: trade off. We won the whole thing. It's just a
- 23:35Speaker 5: couple of weeks in Milwaukee. But I'm sure the Brewers
- 23:37Speaker 5: aren't super thrilled that he kind of played through it
- 23:41Speaker 5: all and then they found out that it's actually fractured.
- 23:45Speaker 4: All right, let's go to Kyle Harrison, the big piece
- 23:49Speaker 4: that was brought over in the trade for Freddie P.
- 23:52Speaker 4: I'm sorry for the trade for yes, for it's okay.
- 23:57Speaker 4: It's a lot of trades, a lot of trades, track,
- 24:00Speaker 4: there's a lot of trades. But Kyle Harrison has more
- 24:02Speaker 4: pressure on him if he was traded for Freddy P.
- 24:05Speaker 4: So sorry about that, Jet Williams and Sproke. But Kyle
- 24:09Speaker 4: Harrison's starting tonight and this first start. Is there any
- 24:15Speaker 4: indications that Chris Hook, the pitching coach, has given you
- 24:19Speaker 4: in a sense of like what do they need to
- 24:21Speaker 4: see from him that would say, Okay, there's a successful
- 24:24Speaker 4: month of spring training that he's adopted X, Y or Z.
- 24:31Speaker 5: So much of it for the Brewers, and with Hook,
- 24:33Speaker 5: comes down to not necessarily what you see on the mound,
- 24:36Speaker 5: but what you see in the four or five days
- 24:39Speaker 5: in between the preparation, the work, the routine, Like how
- 24:45Speaker 5: do you react to failure? I mean, frankly, that's something
- 24:48Speaker 5: they'll need to see from him in the first two
- 24:50Speaker 5: months as well. They're going to see it with Brandon
- 24:52Speaker 5: Sprote right now. This feels very similar to twenty nineteen
- 24:58Speaker 5: when it was Burns, it was Wildriff, Peralta, and two
- 25:01Speaker 5: out of those three guys had really bad years. Corbyn
- 25:05Speaker 5: was sent down to the miners, gave up a billion
- 25:07Speaker 5: home runs, and Freddie went down to the miners as well,
- 25:11Speaker 5: and those guys responded, And now the Brewers have a
- 25:13Speaker 5: little more of a system in place of how to
- 25:16Speaker 5: win games, how to develop these guys. And that's not
- 25:20Speaker 5: to say that Kyle, Harrison and brand Sperder are going
- 25:22Speaker 5: to end up like Woody and Peralta and Burns, because
- 25:25Speaker 5: that's a pretty dang high bar to clear. But they
- 25:29Speaker 5: want to see them get through the season, get through
- 25:32Speaker 5: the work, get through the failure, in a similar way
- 25:35Speaker 5: to some of the guys that have done that for
- 25:38Speaker 5: them in the past and then ended up having success,
- 25:40Speaker 5: whether that was Ashby or Quinn Priesser or Woodie or Burns,
- 25:42Speaker 5: like all these guys failed at some point and then
- 25:44Speaker 5: turned out to be really good pitchers.
- 25:48Speaker 1: This episode is brought to you by Fox One Go

- 26:11Speaker 6: of anything you want to watch on an app. Fox

- 26:23Speaker 1: So go check that out and you can start your
- 26:26Speaker 1: seven day free trial today. Offers are subject to change.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Go to Fox one for complete terms and conditions. Fox
- 26:32Speaker 1: one streaming now.
- 26:34Speaker 3: And that is definitely true. My question to you now,
- 26:36Speaker 3: forget about players wise, I'm talking about teams and alf Central.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Talk a little about that. How do you see the
- 26:42Speaker 3: Brewers stacking up? I know they went three and zero
- 26:44Speaker 3: against the team that wasn't very good. They got some
- 26:47Speaker 3: big games coming up. Talk to me about you know,
- 26:49Speaker 3: what do you think their likes are of being the
- 26:51Speaker 3: top again?
- 26:54Speaker 5: It feels like we're doing the same thing over and
- 26:56Speaker 5: over with the Brewers and the Central where they kind
- 26:59Speaker 5: of don't have the flashiest offseason. They don't have the
- 27:02Speaker 5: flashiest offseason. It feels like they give away more than
- 27:04Speaker 5: they get back, and then we look up in August
- 27:08Speaker 5: and they're in a great spot. And that's kind of
- 27:09Speaker 5: what I'm expecting again this year. The Cubs have, you know,
- 27:14Speaker 5: you look at that roster on paper, it's a pretty
- 27:17Speaker 5: dang good roster and they should be able to make
- 27:18Speaker 5: some noise. We'll see. We'll see on the Pirates, we'll
- 27:21Speaker 5: see on the Reds, but you kind of it feels
- 27:26Speaker 5: like it boils down to a two horse race again
- 27:28Speaker 5: at this point. Again, we don't want to get too
- 27:30Speaker 5: read too much into a three and zero start against
- 27:32Speaker 5: the White Sox. But the Brewers did look a lot
- 27:35Speaker 5: in those three games like they did last summer when
- 27:38Speaker 5: they were, you know, beating the world. So that's what
- 27:42Speaker 5: I'm expecting. I'm expecting those two teams, and it will
- 27:46Speaker 5: be tricky to see, Like if the Pirates, I think
- 27:49Speaker 5: there's a lot of upside there, but can you hang
- 27:51Speaker 5: Can you hang with a team that has such a
- 27:53Speaker 5: winning pedigree for six months? That's tricky.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I'll tell you this the start for the Brewish or
- 27:59Speaker 1: beats the start for the Brewers last year the Torpedo
- 28:02Speaker 1: Series for them when they were torpedoed by the Yankees.
- 28:05Speaker 1: So this is much rosier. They're already putting together a
- 28:09Speaker 1: much friendlier weekend for their fans coming off the sweep
- 28:13Speaker 1: of the White Sox. Okay, my question to you is
- 28:16Speaker 1: about something we didn't really get to hit last week.
- 28:18Speaker 1: It came out and missed a million other things around
- 28:21Speaker 1: opening day. Mark Otznasio, owner of the Brewers, said they're
- 28:24Speaker 1: losing about twenty million dollars with the switchover to working
- 28:28Speaker 1: with MLB on their broadcast rights this year versus what
- 28:31Speaker 1: they were going to get from the Main Street Sports Group.
- 28:34Speaker 1: How much do you think that hurt the Brewers when
- 28:36Speaker 1: they were going through their offseason or do they not
- 28:39Speaker 1: even really factor that into the way they do off
- 28:41Speaker 1: seasons anymore. I know this isn't going to be a
- 28:45Speaker 1: topic probably until September October, either if the team misses
- 28:49Speaker 1: the playoffs or if they get bounced and don't win
- 28:51Speaker 1: a World Series. But if I'm a Brewers fan and
- 28:54Speaker 1: I feel like this is our winning window to win.
- 28:56Speaker 1: And I know some Brewers fans go crazy about this,
- 28:58Speaker 1: but I think they should put the pedal to the medal.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I want that one other starter that would have cost
- 29:03Speaker 1: me that kind of twenty thirty million bucks that can
- 29:06Speaker 1: win you a few playoff games in October.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Yeah. The answer we got on opening Day when this
- 29:14Speaker 5: came up was like, oh, well, is that sure that
- 29:16Speaker 5: affected your off season, right? And the answer was not really,
- 29:19Speaker 5: because the way the Brewers operate, you know, they're unsurprisingly
- 29:23Speaker 5: in a great spot organizationally in terms of finances and
- 29:27Speaker 5: the value versus the debt and all that sort of
- 29:30Speaker 5: financial mumbo jumbo. But look, the Brews didn't doing a
- 29:35Speaker 5: whole heck of a lot in terms of using any
- 29:38Speaker 5: sort of financial muscle this offseason. Yeah, they they extended
- 29:42Speaker 5: the qualifying offer to brand Woodruff and you know, a
- 29:45Speaker 5: twenty two million dollar salary for a starting Pitchering Malwache.
- 29:47Speaker 5: That's not that's not nothing. That's the most they've ever
- 29:49Speaker 5: paid a starter over a single season. But look, you
- 29:52Speaker 5: look at their offseason and their payroll went up like
- 29:54Speaker 5: five six sish million, which was like four per four
- 29:57Speaker 5: or five percent up from last year. That's not quite
- 30:01Speaker 5: on par with what we usually see from teams that
- 30:05Speaker 5: made it to the NLCS. You know, you get that
- 30:07Speaker 5: long playoff run, you get a little more revenue, and
- 30:10Speaker 5: teams generally bump their payroll somewhere like nine ten percent.
- 30:14Speaker 5: I think it was when I when I ran some
- 30:16Speaker 5: of those numbers this offseason. So whether it affected them
- 30:21Speaker 5: or not, we like they say no, and that's kind
- 30:24Speaker 5: of all we have to go off. But I think
- 30:26Speaker 5: I think your right, Scott, that coming off an NLCS appearance,
- 30:31Speaker 5: you don't have to mortgage necessarily the future. You don't
- 30:35Speaker 5: have to blow it up and make or not necessarily
- 30:38Speaker 5: blow up, blow up the farm system and make all
- 30:40Speaker 5: these all in trades. That's not how they operate, but
- 30:43Speaker 5: there are certainly ways to flex a little more finances.
- 30:48Speaker 5: And the Brewers are, you know, like they're the smallest
- 30:50Speaker 5: market in baseball. They'll tell you that they punch above
- 30:52Speaker 5: their weight compared to some other teams, and for sure,
- 30:54Speaker 5: we got to give them credit on that front. But
- 30:57Speaker 5: you know, whether it's like go trade for Luis Roberts
- 31:00Speaker 5: or sign a sign Harrison batter, you know, it's just
- 31:04Speaker 5: just those coats. A couple of examples that come to mind.
- 31:08Speaker 5: They clearly were not in a incredible financial spot this offseason,
- 31:13Speaker 5: and maybe some of that was due to the TV,
- 31:16Speaker 5: and maybe some of it was due to this is
- 31:18Speaker 5: sort of just how they upreak.
- 31:20Speaker 4: All right, Can you glean a couple of your favorite
- 31:23Speaker 4: parts of the article? I guess is that cannibalism if
- 31:26Speaker 4: you like your own favorite parts of a column that
- 31:28Speaker 4: you wrote. No, that's like wordsm whatever it is about
- 31:32Speaker 4: its hous ego.
- 31:34Speaker 5: That's what it is.
- 31:35Speaker 4: Cannibalism is not the same thing.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Okay, good?
- 31:37Speaker 4: You know basically it said, you know, it says how
- 31:40Speaker 4: South Freelik's war cry has come to define the Brewers.
- 31:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, like, my favorite parts weren't anything I wrote.
- 31:48Speaker 5: It was talking to Sally yesterday after the game, like
- 31:51Speaker 5: the players were all kind of hanging out, and I
- 31:53Speaker 5: waited him out a little bit and then come up
- 31:55Speaker 5: to him. He's just talking like he's just talking about
- 31:57Speaker 5: how he's yelling drag him, drag him with you. And
- 32:01Speaker 5: it's like quintessential sal basically. And it's just interesting that
- 32:05Speaker 5: like this not only works for the Brewers, but they
- 32:09Speaker 5: have embraced it as an entire team one through nine like,
- 32:14Speaker 5: it's hard to have nine guys buy into being South Freelink,
- 32:19Speaker 5: and the Brewers, I think like mentally have nine guys
- 32:22Speaker 5: in the lineup that are basically buying into you know,
- 32:25Speaker 5: they're not South Freelink, no one really is, but they
- 32:29Speaker 5: are buying into the same mentality that he has at
- 32:31Speaker 5: the plate, which isn't necessarily like the goal isn't to
- 32:35Speaker 5: make you throw a billion pitches, but if we get behind,
- 32:40Speaker 5: I'm gonna make you throw a billion pitches. I'm just
- 32:42Speaker 5: gonna make you work, and that kind of you can
- 32:45Speaker 5: see how that applies to various areas of the Brewers
- 32:48Speaker 5: as well, And like you pay a little attention to
- 32:51Speaker 5: these details and you start to see a little bit
- 32:53Speaker 5: of how they keep out performing what we think they're
- 32:57Speaker 5: gonna do year in and year out.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Well, I love it. Yeah, they've got great personalities there.
- 33:04Speaker 1: We love talking a lot of these Brewers.
- 33:06Speaker 5: Guys.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Kurt love talking to you on the way out. Want
- 33:09Speaker 1: to shout out Brewer territory. Kurt and Corey Kanabel bringing it.

- 33:16Speaker 1: Give them a subscribe right now. Police, it's a brand
- 33:19Speaker 1: new show. They're bringing it for you every single week,
- 33:21Speaker 1: multiple episodes covering the team with the best record in
- 33:25Speaker 1: the regular season last year. Kurt, thank you, appreciate you man.
- 33:28Speaker 4: We'll catch up soon, of course.
- 33:30Speaker 5: Fellas thanks
