- 0:57Speaker 3: girl New York City Marathon Peloton instructor Kirsten Ferguson. It
- 1:04Speaker 3: was a no brainer for me the second that I
- 1:06Speaker 3: knew that Kirsten was running the marathon, I said, you
- 1:09Speaker 3: know what We're doing the Tuesday after November three, the
- 1:13Speaker 3: first Sunday in November in New York City. We are
- 1:16Speaker 3: sitting down and we are diving into everything, and oh
- 1:20Speaker 3: my gosh, this conversation delivers. Kirsten is telling me not
- 1:24Speaker 3: only about the journey to the marathon starting line from
- 1:28Speaker 3: the perspective of the last sixteen weeks in this training cycle,
- 1:32Speaker 3: but also we're diving into the journey holistically. Kirsten went
- 1:36Speaker 3: through a really gnarly injury, a major setback that put
- 1:40Speaker 3: her marathon journey on pause for a while. She shares
- 1:44Speaker 3: about her hip surgery and how there were so many
- 1:47Speaker 3: moments on the road to recovery that she really truly struggled.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Kirsten shares her excitement about every weekend running her longest
- 1:56Speaker 3: run ever, about the highs and the lows of the
- 1:59Speaker 3: journey to get to that starting line, and how she
- 2:02Speaker 3: was able to keep her nerves at bay despite knowing
- 2:06Speaker 3: that come November third, when she showed up in Staten Island,
- 2:10Speaker 3: she was going to enter a period of great unknown.
- 2:14Speaker 2: She shares her highs.
- 2:15Speaker 3: And lows from the twenty six point two mile journey
- 2:18Speaker 3: from Sutton Island to Central Park, the main thing that
- 2:21Speaker 3: kept her going when it felt so hard, and where
- 2:25Speaker 3: she drew inspiration from along the way. Of course, I
- 2:29Speaker 3: have to ask her whether or not she'd ever do another,
- 2:33Speaker 3: and we also chat about what she's excited about now
- 2:36Speaker 3: what she's looking forward to next. There's nothing more that
- 2:41Speaker 3: I love than having good friends in the studio, and
- 2:44Speaker 3: I'm so happy to be able to bring this conversation
- 2:47Speaker 3: to all of you. I promise my recap is coming
- 2:49Speaker 3: in the near future, so stay tuned.

- 3:20Speaker 3: Let's get to hurdling.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Today.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I am sitting down with Kirstin Ferguson. She is a
- 3:31Speaker 3: peloton instructor a new marathonor wow, wow wow.
- 3:37Speaker 1: How does an add that to like my resume? Please,
- 3:40Speaker 1: it's gonna be the first thing that's on there. Mom,
- 3:44Speaker 1: yea Comma marathonor absolutely, oh my god, wild Yeah. I
- 3:50Speaker 1: still wake up like I've been sleeping next to my
- 3:52Speaker 1: medal for the last two days and I wake up like, wow,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I really did just do that.
- 3:56Speaker 2: That's so wild to me.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Did you spot to do this for a while now
- 4:02Speaker 3: or was this on a whim I'm just going to
- 4:06Speaker 3: go for it situation.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Never in a million years did I think that I
- 4:11Speaker 1: was going to be a marathon or like ever run
- 4:14Speaker 1: a marathon ever. I think even when I first talked
- 4:17Speaker 1: to you, it was just never something that I thought
- 4:20Speaker 1: was in the cards for me. And then after my
- 4:22Speaker 1: hip surgery and I ran the half marathon, I was like, oh, okay,
- 4:27Speaker 1: that was cool. And then someone was like, would you
- 4:31Speaker 1: ever do the full? Because it's always like, all right,
- 4:33Speaker 1: you did that, what's next? And so I remember asking
- 4:38Speaker 1: my run coach and I was like, do you think
- 4:40Speaker 1: I would be able to do this? And he said,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I'll get you there. It's it's not going to be easy,
- 4:46Speaker 1: but if you're willing to do it, I'll get you there.
- 4:50Speaker 2: So I did a lot of praying about it, asking.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Everyone, and then I was like all right, I sent
- 4:56Speaker 1: the email asking if I can get a bib and
- 4:59Speaker 1: there was and so.
- 5:00Speaker 3: The bib comes from the NYRR and Peloton partnership.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Correct, you got it.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Okay, and it wasn't the first time that you had
- 5:09Speaker 3: signed up for a race like this, because the half marathon,
- 5:13Speaker 3: what happened was that you registered for your first one
- 5:15Speaker 3: and then you had to sidestep because of that injury.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Correct, Yeah, I signed up for the Brooklyn half. Initially,
- 5:22Speaker 1: you know, I'm just surrounded by superheroes, whether it be
- 5:26Speaker 1: my teammates at Peloton or even just the members, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: I was like, Wow, how cool would it be if
- 5:33Speaker 1: I did actually.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Run a half marathon.
- 5:35Speaker 1: At that time, that just seemed even out of the
- 5:37Speaker 1: cards for me then, and you know, teaching at Peloton
- 5:41Speaker 1: at that.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Time, it was like two years. It's like all right,
- 5:43Speaker 2: I think I'm ready, let's just try this.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And then, you know, I went out for a long
- 5:47Speaker 1: run and was dragging my leg home and I had
- 5:51Speaker 1: injured my hip, and so to have to pull out
- 5:53Speaker 1: of that race was tough because I finally got in
- 5:56Speaker 1: my head wrapped around the idea of running a half marathon,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and so having to pull out of that was really
- 6:02Speaker 1: hard for me. But then after the surgery, I needed
- 6:05Speaker 1: a goal. I needed something besides just getting back to Peloton.
- 6:11Speaker 1: What is it that I can do that would prove
- 6:14Speaker 1: to myself that my body is healed, and it was
- 6:18Speaker 1: that half marathon for me.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, injuries are not easy.
- 6:24Speaker 3: And when you have to put your pride aside or
- 6:26Speaker 3: your ego aside and be like, I need to prioritize
- 6:29Speaker 3: what's best for my body in the long term, it's
- 6:32Speaker 3: so challenging.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Beyond beyond and even just trusting the process, because the
- 6:38Speaker 1: tricky part with hip surgery is you feel good, you know,
- 6:42Speaker 1: after you get off the crutches, things feel good, But
- 6:46Speaker 1: in that moment you really have to truck your doctors
- 6:48Speaker 1: and trust your pt and trust the plan to get
- 6:52Speaker 1: back and to get back healthy and get back smart.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And so that was also just really hard because that
- 7:00Speaker 1: was movement. Was also just the way I released things mentally,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and so to take that out was really hard for me.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And it's such a big part of your livelihood.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, when you went about your day to day,
- 7:16Speaker 3: did you find it challenging not only to not be
- 7:19Speaker 3: able to move as Kirsten, but not be able to
- 7:22Speaker 3: move as Kirsten the person that would otherwise be moving
- 7:26Speaker 3: for work.
- 7:29Speaker 1: But I think it was in those moments that I
- 7:31Speaker 1: realized also there were things I needed to heal mentally
- 7:36Speaker 1: and emotionally that I had been just pushing down for
- 7:40Speaker 1: years and never really tapped into it until God, the universe,
- 7:45Speaker 1: whatever you believe, was like, hey, I really need to
- 7:48Speaker 1: make you still until you heal these things, which is
- 7:52Speaker 1: so hard beyond I'm like, wait what I thought I
- 7:57Speaker 1: was doing all the things right, but now I was like, no, no, no, no,
- 8:00Speaker 1: we got to fix some things.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 3: And so when that alarm goes off, so to speak
- 8:05Speaker 3: of we need to heal, what does that process look
- 8:08Speaker 3: like for you?
- 8:09Speaker 2: Are you speaking to someone? What did you do?
- 8:11Speaker 3: Because it's bigger than just like I'm going to sit
- 8:13Speaker 3: with how I feel about this.
- 8:15Speaker 2: It's interesting.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I did a lot. I have a life coach that
- 8:19Speaker 1: I speak to you weekly. But also I did hypnotherapy.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So getting back to young Kirsten and really healing those
- 8:28Speaker 1: wounds and going even deeper than I thought was. There,
- 8:33Speaker 1: A lot of prayer, meditation, all those things really helped.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And also talking to my mom, like having real conversations
- 8:41Speaker 1: with her that I've never had, and just addressing things
- 8:45Speaker 1: that we both had pushed down for so long and
- 8:48Speaker 1: I didn't even realize, like not tapping into those things
- 8:52Speaker 1: they say, hip pain is fear of moving forward, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: so I needed to heal all of those things order
- 9:00Speaker 1: for me to really step into my true potential.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And that was to come. And this is challenges from
- 9:06Speaker 2: when you were younger.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, yeah, So dealing with you know, my father
- 9:12Speaker 1: not being there, not being present, and always feeling like
- 9:15Speaker 1: there was these holes missing, and even you know, just
- 9:19Speaker 1: feeling things from the dating world, and all of that
- 9:24Speaker 1: just sent back to the lack of my father being
- 9:27Speaker 1: present in my life. And I had to address all
- 9:31Speaker 1: of those things, you know. And I even went through
- 9:34Speaker 1: a divorce during the pandemic, and I never really it
- 9:37Speaker 1: was almost like, all right, this is what I have
- 9:39Speaker 1: to do because I'm mom, and I have to figure out, like,
- 9:41Speaker 1: what's the next step. I never really healed from any
- 9:43Speaker 1: of that, and so this I called it my pause season,
- 9:49Speaker 1: was my moment to heal physically, emotionally, and mentally.
- 9:53Speaker 3: How relatable is that, though, that we were constantly just
- 9:56Speaker 3: trying to get to the next thing, right or just
- 9:59Speaker 3: a autopilot, I would argue, especially as New Yorkers, Right,
- 10:03Speaker 3: there's so much happening around us all the time. There
- 10:06Speaker 3: are so many different things that are stimulating, and it's like, okay,
- 10:10Speaker 3: I need to do a BC and oh we did,
- 10:13Speaker 3: be okay, onto scene right.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Exactly, onto the next thing immediately.
- 10:17Speaker 3: And so for you to have this pause season and
- 10:20Speaker 3: get comfortable with the uncomfortable something that you have done
- 10:23Speaker 3: before in terms of going outside of your comfort zone
- 10:26Speaker 3: for sure, but certainly not in this way.
- 10:28Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no.
- 10:29Speaker 1: No.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Not at all, not at all. And it was it
- 10:33Speaker 2: was challenging.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Was it was challenging, you know, to walk through all
- 10:36Speaker 1: the open old wounds and really look at them from
- 10:40Speaker 1: a different perspective was hard, but also just so necessary
- 10:45Speaker 1: when you are conquering these emotional hurdles, these mental hurdles.
- 10:52Speaker 3: How do you know quote unquote that the work is
- 10:57Speaker 3: behind you, right Like, how do you know that you
- 11:01Speaker 3: have done enough on this certain thing that you can
- 11:05Speaker 3: progress to the next area, you can work on the
- 11:07Speaker 3: next challenge.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I knew that I.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Was really healing and healed when things that used to
- 11:17Speaker 1: take me out emotionally no longer cared the same weight,
- 11:21Speaker 1: you know, like I was able to get through Father's
- 11:23Speaker 1: Day without feeling like I'm lacking anything, or I was
- 11:27Speaker 1: able to, you know, just move through different things that
- 11:30Speaker 1: would arise like, Okay, that happened. I acknowledged that, and
- 11:37Speaker 1: I could move on. It didn't take me out like
- 11:39Speaker 1: it used to before. And that's how I know there's growth. Yeah,
- 11:42Speaker 1: that's that you can like see it, acknowledge it, and
- 11:45Speaker 1: move on versus taking you into a dark lace or
- 11:49Speaker 1: you know however it used to spiral before. For me,
- 11:53Speaker 1: no longer cares that weight, right, no longer cares at weight.
- 11:56Speaker 2: You know.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Even my father always sends a Chris card every year,
- 12:01Speaker 1: and this year when I got it, it was like, okay, yeah,
- 12:06Speaker 1: Before it used to just make me so upset.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Now it's like okay.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Isn't that the first step to moving forward from anything?
- 12:15Speaker 1: Though?
- 12:15Speaker 3: It's like you get to this place where you recognize, okay,
- 12:20Speaker 3: this is how it is now, And when you're honest
- 12:24Speaker 3: with yourself about how things are, then you can make
- 12:27Speaker 3: changes if you seek them moving forward, absolutely, But until
- 12:30Speaker 3: you recognize the baseline, you're not going to be able
- 12:34Speaker 3: to adapt or change, or if you make those ed
- 12:37Speaker 3: adaptations or those changes, it's probably not going to stick.
- 12:40Speaker 2: No, absolutely not.
- 12:42Speaker 1: And I think for me it was just knowing that
- 12:45Speaker 1: that was there and acknowledging that and also celebrating you know,
- 12:51Speaker 1: where I'm at today, you know, and how I got
- 12:55Speaker 1: to where I am without you know that the presence
- 12:59Speaker 1: of my father there, or you know, the things that
- 13:02Speaker 1: really hurt, you know, acknowledging them, but then also just
- 13:06Speaker 1: stepping into your power. And I think that is the
- 13:09Speaker 1: best place.
- 13:09Speaker 3: To be when you're able to do that, when you
- 13:11Speaker 3: finally get to sign up for the half marathon, talk
- 13:14Speaker 3: to me about where your head's at. I think for
- 13:17Speaker 3: me it was like it was like a test, like, okay, body,
- 13:22Speaker 3: are you fully healed.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Let's try it and see.
- 13:25Speaker 1: And even for that point, you know, the furthest I
- 13:28Speaker 1: had done was ten miles, so it was also accepting
- 13:32Speaker 1: like Okay, I'm not going to go out and run
- 13:33Speaker 1: ten miles. I'm going to start and I'm going to
- 13:35Speaker 1: go out and walk run four and it's starting from
- 13:41Speaker 1: the beginning again, and that's also challenged. That's another challenge
- 13:44Speaker 1: of like Okay, I know where I was before.
- 13:48Speaker 2: But I have to go back. I have to go
- 13:50Speaker 2: back to the beginning.
- 13:51Speaker 3: You have to meet yourself with where you're at right then, yeah, right,
- 13:54Speaker 3: like humble yourself. One of my raised mantras has always been.
- 13:57Speaker 3: All it takes is all you've got. And when I
- 14:00Speaker 3: show up to each race, no matter what I've done,
- 14:04Speaker 3: no matter where I've been, I am a different Emily
- 14:07Speaker 3: than I was the day before, the year before, et cetera.
- 14:11Speaker 3: And so when you're beginning this training after that injury,
- 14:15Speaker 3: I would imagine two things. One, you're like scared of
- 14:18Speaker 3: taking a backstep, but also there's so much difficulty in
- 14:22Speaker 3: that act of meeting yourself with where you're at right now,
- 14:25Speaker 3: knowing where you had been.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Right yeah, for sure, and trusting your body again, trusting
- 14:31Speaker 1: the doctors they said you're ready, you just have to
- 14:34Speaker 1: go out and trust that.
- 14:35Speaker 2: But then it's also like I was, I was so
- 14:39Speaker 2: much better before, you know.
- 14:41Speaker 1: But but also you know, I'm stronger than I was
- 14:44Speaker 1: before now because I've went through a lot, and I
- 14:47Speaker 1: actually know more about my body now, and I know what.
- 14:51Speaker 2: It looks like to actually warm up before a run.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Wow, I wasn't doing that before, or you know, just
- 14:57Speaker 1: doing all of the recovery things that I was not
- 14:59Speaker 1: doing before. And I promised myself after my surgery that
- 15:03Speaker 1: would never take my body for granted again. And so
- 15:06Speaker 1: even though I was starting at square one, I was
- 15:07Speaker 1: starting from a much smarter and stronger place, and so
- 15:11Speaker 1: I get myself grace in that. And so every week
- 15:14Speaker 1: you just adding from that, you know, take it one
- 15:17Speaker 1: step at a time. How do you find that grace
- 15:19Speaker 1: with yourself?
- 15:20Speaker 3: How do you cultivate a conversation of positivity so that
- 15:24Speaker 3: you can meet yourself with where you're at.
- 15:28Speaker 2: You know, it's positive self talk to yourself.
- 15:31Speaker 1: You know, even even in the run where it gets
- 15:33Speaker 1: hard or where things feel challenging, it's like you got
- 15:36Speaker 1: to give yourself some grace.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Like there were runs that didn't go great.
- 15:40Speaker 1: It's like, Okay, you just had hip surgery, Kirsten, look
- 15:43Speaker 1: at all the things that you've been through. You're doing
- 15:45Speaker 1: a great job. Like keep going, yeah, you know, keep going.
- 15:49Speaker 1: And I also find that I know that I'm moving
- 15:52Speaker 1: in the right direction when I'm not faced with a
- 15:54Speaker 1: lot of resistance. And so in that process of training Behalf,
- 16:01Speaker 1: it took a step by step and I didn't feel
- 16:04Speaker 1: I didn't have any hip pain. I didn't have anything
- 16:07Speaker 1: that was like, oh I don't know about this or this.
- 16:11Speaker 1: You know, because running is also my job and so
- 16:12Speaker 1: that's always going to be top of mind in my
- 16:14Speaker 1: top priority, and so at any point something felt off,
- 16:17Speaker 1: I knew I was going to pull out.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I want to talk about that sentiment.
- 16:21Speaker 3: I know that I'm moving in the right direction when
- 16:23Speaker 3: I'm not experiencing a lot of resistance. Otherwise often referred
- 16:27Speaker 3: to being in alignment. Yes, how else have you seen
- 16:33Speaker 3: that payoff in your life? Where else have you realized, Oh,
- 16:38Speaker 3: I must be in alignment right now?
- 16:40Speaker 2: This is feeling good for me.
- 16:44Speaker 1: When I first started interviewing at Peloton, I went through
- 16:49Speaker 1: so much imposter syndrome, you know, when they told me
- 16:52Speaker 1: they wanted me to teach on the tread and I
- 16:54Speaker 1: was like, I'm sorry.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Come again, I don't do this, you know.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And so it was like we all of this is
- 17:00Speaker 1: making sense or all of the things were coming into place,
- 17:05Speaker 1: and I was starting to feel like, oh wait, I
- 17:09Speaker 1: do belong here. And there wasn't much resistance coming to me.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I was learning, I was growing, I was supported. Even
- 17:16Speaker 1: when they actually hired me, I was every week. I
- 17:19Speaker 1: remember every interview that I went on, every audition, I
- 17:22Speaker 1: was like, Okay, this is great. Like if it doesn't happen,
- 17:25Speaker 1: I've learned so much, you know, And with every yes,
- 17:28Speaker 1: it was like, Okay, this is the next step in
- 17:31Speaker 1: the process. But I really was not attached to the outcome.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I was really just enjoying the journey in the process,
- 17:38Speaker 1: and so that to me was one example of like no, no, no,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you're moving in your purpose here.
- 17:45Speaker 2: This is where you're meant to be.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Some people don't even know that about you, that you
- 17:49Speaker 3: came into Peloton with a cycling background and then ended
- 17:53Speaker 3: up auditioning to do things on the trend.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, wild Wild. I was like, are you sure?
- 17:59Speaker 1: But you know, Bex believed in me when I didn't
- 18:01Speaker 1: believe myself. Robin believing when I didn't believe myself. A
- 18:04Speaker 1: lot of the team, my teammates believed in me when
- 18:05Speaker 1: I was like you know what, all right, y'all, y'all
- 18:08Speaker 1: say it, I'll do it, you know. So their support
- 18:11Speaker 1: was incredible too.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Feelings from finishing your first half marathon it was so interesting.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I remember finishing and being like, wow, that was so hard.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I could never I can't even imagine doing this, and
- 18:29Speaker 1: then like going back like it was to me that.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Was challenging, Like I remember I did.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I ran the race with Tunday, rad and Selena and
- 18:40Speaker 1: they had all finished before me and I'm like, y'all,
- 18:42Speaker 1: that was so hard.
- 18:43Speaker 2: They're like, really, it was great, great day.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I think today went out to six minute of hour
- 18:46Speaker 1: zone after I was like cors Allo for a couple
- 18:48Speaker 1: of days. But that's so beautiful about I think just
- 18:53Speaker 1: trying something hard and then going after the next thing.
- 18:57Speaker 1: You know, even in training, like for the Marion, you
- 19:01Speaker 1: run half marathons every long run, right, I was just
- 19:05Speaker 1: in all of the whole process after that.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Do you remember for the beginning of the marathon training then,
- 19:12Speaker 3: like the first consecutive week that you did back to
- 19:15Speaker 3: back half marathons.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that was crazy. That was crazy. That was crazy.
- 19:20Speaker 2: That was crazy, And.
- 19:21Speaker 1: It was also interesting because that moment was and you
- 19:25Speaker 1: sent me the sweetest note. That was the moment I
- 19:27Speaker 1: was going out for. I had did fourteen and then
- 19:30Speaker 1: I had to go out and do sixteen and run
- 19:33Speaker 1: in summer streets, and my feeling was just all for
- 19:37Speaker 1: It was just a bad run day. I don't know,
- 19:39Speaker 1: it was like eighty five deal. It was just hot,
- 19:43Speaker 1: and I had gotten to probably almost thirteen and my
- 19:48Speaker 1: body hit a block a block and I could I
- 19:52Speaker 1: walk ran another mile and a half, but at fourteen
- 19:55Speaker 1: and a half.
- 19:55Speaker 2: I had to stop.
- 19:56Speaker 1: I didn't know whether I was going to pass out.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I didn't know what was going to happen, but I
- 20:02Speaker 1: knew I was done. And I remember feeling so defeated
- 20:05Speaker 1: in that moment because I was like, oooh, do you
- 20:07Speaker 1: think you are Kirston Ferguson. If you can't run sixteen,
- 20:10Speaker 1: what makes you think you can run twenty six point too?
- 20:13Speaker 1: I remember that moment so vividly. But then I had
- 20:17Speaker 1: ran into Bex and Adrian and locker room and they're like, girl,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you're just not there yet, Like you're going to get there.
- 20:23Speaker 1: You're going to get there. Let's just adjusture fueling. Let's
- 20:26Speaker 1: figure out what went wrong that day. It could have
- 20:28Speaker 1: just been like your worst case is all happening at
- 20:32Speaker 1: the same time, right, And then I spoke to you,
- 20:35Speaker 1: and you know, so many other people had reached out,
- 20:38Speaker 1: like it's just bad. Runs are necessary in this process,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you know, and.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Then you go out and do it again.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I remember this, and I remember like
- 20:49Speaker 3: just I could feel how heavy it was like from
- 20:52Speaker 3: my side of the phone, and I saw at first,
- 20:54Speaker 3: like you post that it didn't go well, and I
- 20:56Speaker 3: was like oh no, hell no. I picked up the
- 20:58Speaker 3: phone and I was like, we need to talk. Yeah,
- 21:00Speaker 3: because I'm so grateful that you did that. I literally
- 21:03Speaker 3: was just like, you are so fine. And I think
- 21:06Speaker 3: that that is whether you know, we're talking about running,
- 21:09Speaker 3: but it's not about running. When you're in the thick
- 21:11Speaker 3: of a difficult moment, it's hard to see it holistically. Yeah,
- 21:16Speaker 3: you almost need to remove yourself to be like no,
- 21:18Speaker 3: like it's not world ending.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:20Speaker 3: And I say this all the time, but ninety nine
- 21:23Speaker 3: point nine percent of the time, when you are experiencing
- 21:27Speaker 3: something that's bad and you're worried about the outcome, the
- 21:30Speaker 3: worst thing that could happen is you'll be where you
- 21:33Speaker 3: started and it's probably not that bad of a place
- 21:36Speaker 3: to be, right right. Yeah, And so going out for
- 21:39Speaker 3: that bad run, like you said, to your point, it
- 21:43Speaker 3: was the best.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Thing that could have happened for you.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Because even after I got all of your just encouraging
- 21:51Speaker 1: words in that moment, and then the next weekend, I
- 21:54Speaker 1: gave myself some grace and I just went into fourteen
- 21:57Speaker 1: and then the next week was a sixteen mile and
- 22:00Speaker 1: I just was like, you know.
- 22:01Speaker 2: What this is, let's coo see and I did it
- 22:04Speaker 2: and the next week two more. You know, you're like,
- 22:07Speaker 2: oh my gosh, this is wild.
- 22:09Speaker 3: What would you say in your training or some of
- 22:13Speaker 3: the most unexpected lessons that you learned or new intel
- 22:19Speaker 3: that you learned about running that you did not have previously.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I learned so much. Like you hear all these stories and.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Then you're like, oh, no, this is what they're talking about,
- 22:29Speaker 1: Like just the battle between your body and your mind.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Like your body's capable, but your mind is You're constantly
- 22:37Speaker 1: battling it. Especially on a lot of my long res
- 22:40Speaker 1: I did solo, and so you're in the thick of
- 22:43Speaker 1: like fourteen sixteen miles and I'm like, man, I would.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Just want to stop. I just want to stop. No,
- 22:50Speaker 2: I want to know if you stop, what if you stop?
- 22:52Speaker 1: You know, it's battling that. I think that was one
- 22:55Speaker 1: of the hardest things for me. Also just how important
- 22:58Speaker 1: fueling is. Learning that along the way, and you know,
- 23:03Speaker 1: stomach tantrums mid run are also lots of fun. I
- 23:07Speaker 1: just learned so much and have so much respect for
- 23:10Speaker 1: the sport now, and also just what my body is
- 23:12Speaker 1: capable of doing all of it.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Isn't it interesting?
- 23:15Speaker 1: Though?
- 23:16Speaker 3: And I would love your perspective on this because so
- 23:19Speaker 3: many of your community members, they look at you, you're
- 23:23Speaker 3: teaching them how to do the thing, and then you're
- 23:25Speaker 3: out there also being taught how to do the time
- 23:29Speaker 3: do the thing. So how does that feel for you
- 23:32Speaker 3: being somewhat of a beginner despite being someone that's helping
- 23:36Speaker 3: other people also on their journeys.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think one of my.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Biggest things and why I always stay true to who
- 23:43Speaker 1: I am. I've always been very authentic about that, and
- 23:46Speaker 1: I think, you know, everything I speak about in class
- 23:49Speaker 1: was all from just personal experience, you know, And that
- 23:52Speaker 1: was also a big driving factor for me to do
- 23:54Speaker 1: the marathon is I know so many people that train
- 23:56Speaker 1: with me on a daily basis, and I want to
- 23:59Speaker 1: be able to talk about it from an authentic perspective
- 24:02Speaker 1: and know that, you know, I went.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Through this process. I always said that I was.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Not a runner, and so now to be able to
- 24:09Speaker 1: officially call myself a runner now is like wild to me.
- 24:13Speaker 1: But you know, accepting that, you know, I wasn't always
- 24:17Speaker 1: a runner, but I'm a runner now and I have
- 24:20Speaker 1: a story to tell and I pride myself in, you know,
- 24:24Speaker 1: speaking to that person that also never sought it for
- 24:27Speaker 1: themselves and say, no, you can.
- 24:29Speaker 2: You know I did it, you could. If I could
- 24:31Speaker 2: do it, you could do it.
- 24:32Speaker 1: And I think it was also for me, Emily, it
- 24:35Speaker 1: was letting go of the perception of I had of
- 24:39Speaker 1: what a runner was. I had this perception like a
- 24:42Speaker 1: runner is fast, and if you're going to run a marathon,
- 24:46Speaker 1: you have to be fast, and if you're not fast,
- 24:49Speaker 1: you can't run a marathon. You know. I don't know why.
- 24:52Speaker 1: I just always had this in my head. Finally let
- 24:54Speaker 1: that go and I was like, you know what, I'm
- 24:56Speaker 1: run a marathon. I'm gonna do it my way, and
- 24:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna have fun. I'm not going to pressure for
- 24:59Speaker 1: myself time and I'm just going to do it, you know.
- 25:02Speaker 1: And and that felt good to me. You know. I
- 25:07Speaker 1: know everybody's different, but for me, it was, you know,
- 25:10Speaker 1: letting go of that pressure. I think also one of
- 25:12Speaker 1: the other things that would have prevented me from signing
- 25:15Speaker 1: up from marathon is, you know, people are watching, like
- 25:17Speaker 1: I'm coaching these people, and I'm like, are they going
- 25:19Speaker 1: to look at my time and judge me? Are they
- 25:21Speaker 1: going to look at my time and not trust me
- 25:23Speaker 1: as a coach. You know, all of these things in
- 25:26Speaker 1: my head said to.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Let that go.
- 25:29Speaker 1: You know, I was like, because also there's somebody that
- 25:31Speaker 1: is seeing my time, and it's like, wow, she worked really, really,
- 25:36Speaker 1: really really hard and she came out on the other side.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Look at that. I always think about that.
- 25:42Speaker 3: There are people every day that would kill to be
- 25:46Speaker 3: in your quote unquote worst case scenario. And thank god
- 25:52Speaker 3: that you got to this place where you could put
- 25:57Speaker 3: that worry aside, albeit very challenging and valid, so that
- 26:03Speaker 3: you could be the person that they look to and
- 26:05Speaker 3: think she could so that I could do.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, in order to be her, you need to
- 26:11Speaker 2: see her.
- 26:12Speaker 3: And you know that as a mother, as now an instructor,
- 26:17Speaker 3: and the way that you move and speak and carry
- 26:20Speaker 3: yourself matters. And so what an unbelievable example that you've
- 26:24Speaker 3: set for both the members and then and we'll talk
- 26:27Speaker 3: about this shortly, but also your girls, we're not there yet.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Aready yet?
- 26:36Speaker 3: In the days leading up to the marathon, bring us
- 26:40Speaker 3: into your mindset.
- 26:42Speaker 2: How are you talking to yourself?
- 26:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I kept myself very busy. I kept myself very
- 26:48Speaker 1: busy because I didn't want to freak myself out. So
- 26:52Speaker 1: it was like a marathon before the marathon, but I
- 26:55Speaker 1: think I just had it in my head that I
- 26:57Speaker 1: had a long run coming up, had a long run
- 26:59Speaker 1: coming up, and I was excited, you know. I went
- 27:02Speaker 1: from nerves. I think nerves are good. I had them,
- 27:05Speaker 1: but I was also just more excited. I was more
- 27:08Speaker 1: excited to do this thing that I never thought I
- 27:11Speaker 1: would have ever done, you know, and be able to
- 27:14Speaker 1: experience it and take it all in.
- 27:17Speaker 2: I knew, no matter what, I.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Was going to get to the finish line, because my
- 27:21Speaker 1: daughters were at the finish line, and so I said
- 27:24Speaker 1: to myself, Kirsten, even if you have to walk this thing,
- 27:26Speaker 1: you're going to cross that finish line, You're going to
- 27:28Speaker 1: be a marathon or And so I held on to that,
- 27:31Speaker 1: and once you kind of let that go and the
- 27:33Speaker 1: pressure of that, I.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Just was like excited.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I was excited to be able to do this and
- 27:40Speaker 1: to experience the city in the most beautiful way. I've
- 27:43Speaker 1: been cheering for the last four years and I've always
- 27:46Speaker 1: just been so inspired and so that then to be
- 27:48Speaker 1: on the other side.
- 27:50Speaker 2: It was beautiful. It was a beautiful opportunity for me.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I was excited to be running with Peloton members and
- 27:56Speaker 1: friends and just have a good day. I knew Peloton
- 28:00Speaker 1: its going to be at mile nineteen, couldn't wait to
- 28:02Speaker 1: see them. I think one of the things that I
- 28:04Speaker 1: did while I was in training, I don't know if
- 28:06Speaker 1: you do this, but like I visualized, like every house.
- 28:09Speaker 2: That I ran, pretend like they were people, and I
- 28:11Speaker 2: was like.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Oh, thank you, okay, Kirsten, Or like I visualized running
- 28:15Speaker 1: up to my Pelison teammates, like what that's going to
- 28:18Speaker 1: feel like?
- 28:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah, And that just made me excited, like I
- 28:23Speaker 2: couldn't wait to get to.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Mile nineteen the way that I would cry in the
- 28:28Speaker 3: like days leading up to the marathon. The marathon goes
- 28:34Speaker 3: through my neighborhood, and I thought about running by my
- 28:39Speaker 3: friends and their babies on the side of the street
- 28:42Speaker 3: and just like I would lose it.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Yeh, I absolutely lose it.
- 28:47Speaker 3: So I can really relate to that because it's just
- 28:49Speaker 3: such a special exchange and that exchange is so valuable,
- 28:53Speaker 3: and it reminds you of the power of the exchange
- 28:55Speaker 3: period right. It reminds us that as humans, we have
- 29:00Speaker 3: the opportunity to be energy dealers from one another, and
- 29:04Speaker 3: it doesn't just have to happen on the side of
- 29:07Speaker 3: a marathon right right, No, for sure, for sure, and
- 29:10Speaker 3: I swear emily I've never felt so loved like I
- 29:14Speaker 3: felt so loved by people I didn't even know, like
- 29:18Speaker 3: just it was just such a beautiful experience and seeing
- 29:21Speaker 3: so many different people from so many different walks of life,
- 29:24Speaker 3: like you just can't help but be inspired out there.
- 29:27Speaker 3: So my mindset going into it was just excitement, like
- 29:31Speaker 3: take it all in, every moment, take it in. Taking
- 29:36Speaker 3: a break from today's episode to give some love to
- 29:40Speaker 3: my sponsor at Element. Element helps anyone stay hydrated without
- 29:44Speaker 3: the sugar and other dodgy ingredients found and popular electrolyte
- 29:48Speaker 3: and sports drenths. It's electrolyte drink mixed with everything you
- 29:52Speaker 3: need and nothing you don't. For me, right now, I
- 29:56Speaker 3: am obsessing over their chocolate metally, it includes chalk Flipman,
- 30:00Speaker 3: chocolate chi and chocolate raspberry. You can mix it up
- 30:04Speaker 3: with hot water to enjoy on its own hot chocolate anyone,
- 30:08Speaker 3: or you can also add it to your favorite recipes.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Have a stick of chocolate mint in your coffee. It
- 30:14Speaker 3: makes for a mean minty mocha. I feel it super
- 30:19Speaker 3: important to remind you that electrolytes are critical and electrolyte
- 30:23Speaker 3: deficiency or imbalance it can cause a lot of problems
- 30:25Speaker 3: annoyances like headaches, cramps, fatigue, brain fog, and weakness. And
- 30:30Speaker 3: that's not just if you're out doing something athletic, right.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Electrolytes are important to our everyday functionality period.

- 30:59Speaker 3: lmnt slash hurdle to get a free stample back with
- 31:03Speaker 3: your purchase today. I want to double click on something
- 31:13Speaker 3: you said earlier. You mentioned that you did all of
- 31:15Speaker 3: your long runs or a majority of them solo. I'm
- 31:19Speaker 3: guessing that's a logistics thing, gues and no. Can we
- 31:24Speaker 3: talk about that? Yeah, because I would. I would love
- 31:27Speaker 3: to get into this conversation with you for sure.
- 31:29Speaker 1: So one, yes, logistics because I love doing my long
- 31:33Speaker 1: runs super early in the morning, so five am. I'm
- 31:36Speaker 1: getting ready and I'm usually out the door by six,
- 31:39Speaker 1: and so I don't want to wait on nobody. I
- 31:41Speaker 1: don't want that, you know. I just want to be
- 31:43Speaker 1: able to do my thing. I have my plan, I
- 31:45Speaker 1: have my routine, and I want to go. But also
- 31:49Speaker 1: for me, sometimes I feel like when you run with somebody,
- 31:53Speaker 1: you feel the pressure, and I don't want to feel
- 31:56Speaker 1: that this is already hard enough, and so I wanted
- 32:00Speaker 1: to do it on my own. And also like the
- 32:02Speaker 1: long runs for me as a mom were for me
- 32:07Speaker 1: like I get three hours to myself where I am
- 32:11Speaker 1: not needed for anything, where I don't have to do
- 32:14Speaker 1: anything but put one foot in front of the other,
- 32:16Speaker 1: and I can listen to whatever music I want, and
- 32:20Speaker 1: I could soak all of that in. And so that's
- 32:24Speaker 1: really why I loved running solo and training solo and
- 32:30Speaker 1: just tapping into where I was ever mentally. A lot
- 32:34Speaker 1: of my long runs, I would put gospel music on
- 32:36Speaker 1: the beginning and I would just start thinking about things
- 32:38Speaker 1: that I want and saying it out loud. It was
- 32:42Speaker 1: just like a beautiful way for me to get my
- 32:45Speaker 1: head together mentally.
- 32:47Speaker 3: I love to hear this, yeah, and I can really
- 32:49Speaker 3: relate to that. I am similar, and that I probably
- 32:55Speaker 3: do like fifty percent solo fifty percent in.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Some sort of community.
- 33:01Speaker 3: Generally speaking, all of that is just scheduling for me,
- 33:06Speaker 3: Yeah for sure. But I really in the first I
- 33:10Speaker 3: don't even have a solid number to put on this now,
- 33:13Speaker 3: But if I had to guess, like probably in my
- 33:15Speaker 3: first five six seven years of considering myself a runner,
- 33:21Speaker 3: I didn't run with other people, and it was twofold one.
- 33:25Speaker 3: I told myself that it was just my me time.
- 33:28Speaker 3: But truly I was just worried that I wasn't enough
- 33:30Speaker 3: to do it.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Yeah, And so when I heard you say that, I
- 33:35Speaker 3: wanted to dig into it a little bit, yeah, and
- 33:39Speaker 3: understand or know or hear a little bit if that's
- 33:42Speaker 3: something that crossed your mind as well.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Yeah, because I also just felt bad, like I don't
- 33:47Speaker 1: know how I'm gonna feel. I'd never really was attached
- 33:50Speaker 1: to time when I was running. I mean, my coach
- 33:52Speaker 1: gave me like a parameter, so sometimes my watch would
- 33:54Speaker 1: like yell at me, like.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Curry up, gir, I'll pick it up.
- 33:57Speaker 1: But I was never really attached to time, and I
- 33:59Speaker 1: never wanted to feel like, hey, I'm slowing you down,
- 34:02Speaker 1: like if I'm slowing you down. Go like just go,
- 34:04Speaker 1: like I don't want that pressure. And so that I
- 34:10Speaker 1: did a couple with other people, which was great.
- 34:12Speaker 2: It was fun. It's fine, but I kind of liked it.
- 34:16Speaker 3: That's okay, solo, no, And I really can sympathize and
- 34:20Speaker 3: like relate with all of it, right, Like, I think
- 34:22Speaker 3: there are benefits to doing it on your own and
- 34:25Speaker 3: reclaiming that space, and then there are obviously benefits to
- 34:28Speaker 3: doing it within community for sin. For me, until I
- 34:32Speaker 3: started diving into my community and like allowing my community
- 34:38Speaker 3: to show up for me, Yeah, that is what unlocked
- 34:42Speaker 3: a different type of running for me. And even over
- 34:46Speaker 3: the weekend when I was running, I felt like after
- 34:51Speaker 3: fourteen marathons or thirteen marathons, Sunday being my fourteenth, that
- 34:57Speaker 3: this was the first time I full allowed everyone else
- 35:02Speaker 3: just to swallow me whole, Like I got out of
- 35:05Speaker 3: my head and was for the first time in thirteen
- 35:10Speaker 3: marathons like completely where my feet were.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and it was so special, that's beautiful. It was
- 35:16Speaker 1: so special. I'll also say, like just watching you this
- 35:18Speaker 1: training cycle, like I remember we first talked about You're like, yeah,
- 35:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna have pizza.
- 35:23Speaker 2: And he was your whole plan.
- 35:26Speaker 1: And then something I don't know what switched for you,
- 35:28Speaker 1: but like all of a sudden, I'm like watching you.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Oh my girl, okay ss like something switched in you
- 35:36Speaker 1: and I watched it and I was like, oh, just
- 35:39Speaker 1: not playing any games.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Oh okay, okay.
- 35:42Speaker 3: I'm just trying to channel my inner fierceness of Karsten
- 35:47Speaker 3: with the speed, tenacity of Bex gentry.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I mean, girl, we ran into each other the marathon
- 35:54Speaker 1: day out there and I was like, you.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Literally looked at me and you were like, it's great
- 35:58Speaker 2: to see you have a nice day.
- 35:59Speaker 1: It's like, have a alright race girl. To you, honey,
- 36:02Speaker 1: you were like, please leave, please leave a sap. I
- 36:06Speaker 1: don't want you anywhere near me.
- 36:07Speaker 2: It's like I don't want your pressure.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Girl.
- 36:09Speaker 2: I know you was flying. Girl. I ain't even gonna
- 36:12Speaker 2: try to fake the fun and try to keep up
- 36:13Speaker 2: with you.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Honey, your race day experience different than some others race
- 36:17Speaker 3: day experience, and that you did have this kind of
- 36:21Speaker 3: I want to call it almost like an elite start,
- 36:23Speaker 3: and that you have the relationship with nyr R.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Tell us what that looked like for you.
- 36:27Speaker 1: It was wild, like I felt like fiance going up
- 36:30Speaker 1: to this start line. No, you know, grateful for the
- 36:35Speaker 1: relationship we have. And it was like a bunch of
- 36:38Speaker 1: different relationships and we were able to get into Wave
- 36:42Speaker 1: one and I remember we were going to like this
- 36:46Speaker 1: holding place and outwalked the elite woman it's like Helen
- 36:49Speaker 1: and was walking out and we're like yes, God, and
- 36:52Speaker 1: Helen's like in her zone, and I was like, wow,
- 36:55Speaker 1: this is wild. This is really cool, you know. And
- 36:58Speaker 1: then all the way when I went out onto the
- 37:01Speaker 1: bridge and we were going to go behind them, and
- 37:06Speaker 1: that's when I was like, Wow, this is this is
- 37:08Speaker 1: this is it, this is happening. And it was beautiful
- 37:11Speaker 1: because I was out there with my teammates, you know
- 37:14Speaker 1: that I know all were just going to do amazing
- 37:17Speaker 1: that this is my first one.
- 37:18Speaker 2: So I was just like I'm happy to be here.
- 37:20Speaker 2: We're all like this is wild. I'm just here for
- 37:23Speaker 2: the vibes, you know. So it was beautiful.
- 37:25Speaker 1: It's beautiful morning, you know, the sun was coming out,
- 37:28Speaker 1: and I didn't even feel nervous in that moment. It
- 37:32Speaker 1: was like, let's go do this.
- 37:35Speaker 2: You know.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I think being surrounded by people that you love in
- 37:38Speaker 1: that moment was beautiful, let's just go have a great race.
- 37:41Speaker 3: When they sing the national anthem, and he did so
- 37:45Speaker 3: good too, Oh beautiful, beautiful. It is just it's game
- 37:49Speaker 3: over for me. Like the chills are there, the fuels
- 37:52Speaker 3: are there. I am like, oh my god.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's time. It's time. It's time, it's time.
- 37:58Speaker 3: At the beginning, as you're going over the Verrizonta and
- 38:02Speaker 3: it's starting to sing in that you're about to run
- 38:04Speaker 3: a marathon, bring us to your headspace as I'm running
- 38:09Speaker 3: too fast, I'm running too slow?
- 38:10Speaker 2: Am I doing this right?
- 38:11Speaker 1: Like?
- 38:11Speaker 2: Where is your head at?
- 38:13Speaker 1: Honestly, I didn't even think about my pace at all.
- 38:17Speaker 1: I was just like, okay, this is the arizontal they
- 38:20Speaker 1: said this, this is an uphill moment, like just getting
- 38:23Speaker 1: all the things that everyone told me, like what to
- 38:25Speaker 1: expect and then turn that off and be super present
- 38:30Speaker 1: and remember to look right and left and look at
- 38:34Speaker 1: the city and look at the sun coming up and wow,
- 38:38Speaker 1: this is amazing.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Hey, why that guy pushed me?
- 38:41Speaker 1: Hereson, be present, keep going, you know, like and also
- 38:45Speaker 1: you know second road, he was like, people are going
- 38:47Speaker 1: to try to zoom by you them. Let them, you know,
- 38:50Speaker 1: that's their race as their goal. You run your race,
- 38:54Speaker 1: and so I was holding on to that and I
- 38:56Speaker 1: was just enjoying the moment.
- 38:57Speaker 2: I was like, wow, this is really looking cool, like
- 39:01Speaker 2: we're running up the bridge.
- 39:02Speaker 1: And then coming down the bridge. I remember my coach
- 39:06Speaker 1: being like, don't go out too fast, you know, stay
- 39:09Speaker 1: where you're at.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Then you know the excitement's gonna get you. You're gonna
- 39:12Speaker 2: hear the crowds.
- 39:14Speaker 1: So I just remember just telling myself to be super
- 39:16Speaker 1: present and taking every single moment.
- 39:19Speaker 2: How did you find your coach?
- 39:23Speaker 1: So my coach is actually Hannah's husband, John Ferry, and
- 39:27Speaker 1: I remember I was with Wilpers.
- 39:31Speaker 2: I was like, oh my gosh. Now I'm trying to think.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Right after my hip surgery, I was like, well, I
- 39:36Speaker 1: think I want to run a half. He's like, oh,
- 39:38Speaker 1: I got the guy for you. And I said it
- 39:39Speaker 1: to Hannah and she was like connected with me with
- 39:41Speaker 1: John and he helped me with the half marathon, and
- 39:46Speaker 1: you know when I said, you know, hey, I'm thinking
- 39:48Speaker 1: about running the full.
- 39:49Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 39:49Speaker 1: And we sat down, we had a conversation and he
- 39:52Speaker 1: walked me through what the training program was going to
- 39:55Speaker 1: look like it's gonna look very different than the half program,
- 39:58Speaker 1: so he laid everything out for me and helped me
- 40:01Speaker 1: understand like what I was really committing.
- 40:03Speaker 3: I think a referral is always really helpful when choosing
- 40:07Speaker 3: a coach, and then obviously important to point out knowing
- 40:11Speaker 3: what their relevant certifications are. Yeah, And I think that
- 40:15Speaker 3: that goes back to our conversation about like the struggles
- 40:18Speaker 3: that go hand in hand with like am I fast enough?
- 40:20Speaker 3: Am I doing well enough? I help other people run?
- 40:22Speaker 3: It's like you know what you have to offer. You
- 40:26Speaker 3: are responsible and smart and diligent and would never steer
- 40:30Speaker 3: someone wrong, like you've done the work to make sure
- 40:32Speaker 3: that by coaching them, you're doing it in a safe and
- 40:35Speaker 3: effective way. Absolutely, So clearly that was something that you
- 40:38Speaker 3: looked for, oh one, especially considering your hip surgery one percent.
- 40:42Speaker 1: And I knew a lot of the other instructors had
- 40:44Speaker 1: worked with him before and they just really trusted him,
- 40:48Speaker 1: and my experience of working with him for the half
- 40:51Speaker 1: was fantastic, and so I trusted him to help me
- 40:56Speaker 1: in the full.
- 40:56Speaker 2: But also you understood.
- 40:58Speaker 1: The lifestyle too of a Pelton instruction, and he understood
- 41:01Speaker 1: that my priority was always going to be Peloton and
- 41:04Speaker 1: you know, he would look at my schedule and understand
- 41:06Speaker 1: what the load was for that week for me work wise.
- 41:09Speaker 1: We'd have that conversation first before he build out my
- 41:12Speaker 1: plan for the week. So he was just really smart
- 41:15Speaker 1: and knowledgeable to help me get to where I need
- 41:19Speaker 1: to be.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Before we continue on the journey of November.
- 41:21Speaker 3: Third, can we also talk about that the structuring, because
- 41:25Speaker 3: obviously what you're doing as a peloton instructor when you're
- 41:28Speaker 3: running X amount every week is very different than what
- 41:32Speaker 3: someone would do if they were simply training for a marathon.
- 41:36Speaker 3: How do you take that into account, especially because some
- 41:38Speaker 3: days your training runs would only be three or four miles,
- 41:41Speaker 3: but you might have to do more than that for work, right.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Yeah, So he would take that all into account before
- 41:46Speaker 1: he would lay out the week, especially if I had,
- 41:49Speaker 1: you know, certain hit runs or different speed classes.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Because also, like even if.
- 41:53Speaker 1: I'm teaching a walk with members, that's still a lot
- 41:57Speaker 1: on me mentally and physically. So we really took into
- 42:00Speaker 1: account everything before he would lay out days. And I
- 42:03Speaker 1: would understand, I knew the days that I was committed
- 42:07Speaker 1: to running, but I would really stay away from the
- 42:10Speaker 1: days that I was teaching because I know how much
- 42:14Speaker 1: it takes out of me, both physically and mentally, and
- 42:18Speaker 1: then also fitting in strength training and all the pet
- 42:22Speaker 1: all of the things, you know. So we would literally
- 42:26Speaker 1: sit down and map out like, Okay, I'm going to
- 42:28Speaker 1: do a heavy day this day, so let's put my
- 42:30Speaker 1: run here or maybe I'll switch it. It was like also
- 42:33Speaker 1: a dance too of understanding how my body felt after
- 42:37Speaker 1: a week and where I structured my strength training to
- 42:41Speaker 1: then figure out, right, well, maybe we'll adjust it here.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Yeah, So it was a lot of back and forth.
- 42:44Speaker 2: For sure.
- 42:45Speaker 3: I really appreciate you highlighting and noting that there's also
- 42:48Speaker 3: mental stress. I believe that regardless of what journey or
- 42:54Speaker 3: on what you might be preparing for, whether it's a
- 42:57Speaker 3: big day at the office or a marathon, a lot
- 43:00Speaker 3: of the time we're not taking into account the other
- 43:03Speaker 3: things that are going on in our lives that impact
- 43:05Speaker 3: and maybe require us to pivot from what was expected
- 43:10Speaker 3: for you in the training. Talk to me about meeting
- 43:14Speaker 3: yourself with where you were at, because did you have
- 43:16Speaker 3: to ever adapt simply because you were.
- 43:19Speaker 2: Overwhelmed one hundred thousand percent?
- 43:22Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, because in addition to being a peloton
- 43:25Speaker 1: instructor and being additioned to trading for marathon. I'm also
- 43:27Speaker 1: a mom and that comes with peaks and valleys, and
- 43:30Speaker 1: some days are great and some days are really challenging.
- 43:32Speaker 1: And I hit a lot of those challenges and I
- 43:35Speaker 1: would just say John, like this not happening this week.
- 43:38Speaker 1: I just I'm not there mentally and be like, Okay,
- 43:41Speaker 1: all good, We'll wake it up in the next week.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Or you know, that's not going to take us out.
- 43:46Speaker 1: We're good and we're still tracking. We're still good. You know,
- 43:49Speaker 1: so did one hundred percent. There were weeks where I
- 43:52Speaker 1: wasn't all there like I did, where I didn't have
- 43:55Speaker 1: the time or the mental capacity to get in those
- 43:58Speaker 1: extra runs or get into speech training, you know, on
- 44:01Speaker 1: a random Wednesday night, like I'm like, no, my kids
- 44:04Speaker 1: are like driving me nuts, Like I need to sit
- 44:08Speaker 1: down and I need to just be for a second,
- 44:12Speaker 1: you know.
- 44:12Speaker 2: And I gave myself grace in that. You Know, what I.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Really stressed was I don't want this training to stress
- 44:20Speaker 1: me out. I carry a lot on a daily basis.
- 44:24Speaker 1: I don't want this to stress me out. I want
- 44:27Speaker 1: this to be a beautiful addition to what I got
- 44:30Speaker 1: going on.
- 44:30Speaker 2: It's the journey, right, Yeah, for sure.
- 44:33Speaker 3: And I think that that's something that often gets so
- 44:35Speaker 3: lost in this process. If you're only eyeing that finish
- 44:39Speaker 3: line and you're only thinking about the finale, you're missing
- 44:44Speaker 3: the point. Yeah, for sure, for sure. And not to
- 44:47Speaker 3: say that it's not a beautiful experience. And you know,
- 44:50Speaker 3: we're only part of the way talking about yours, but
- 44:53Speaker 3: it is such a small piece to the opportunity cost
- 44:57Speaker 3: that it takes over fourteen, sixteen, twenty weeks to get
- 45:01Speaker 3: to that one moment.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, it's all a journey. It's all a process,
- 45:06Speaker 1: you know. And for me, it was giving myself grace
- 45:11Speaker 1: during the week because I knew, you know, what I
- 45:14Speaker 1: do for a living. I knew what I have to carry.
- 45:16Speaker 1: But I'll say I knew like my long runs were
- 45:19Speaker 1: where I put a lot on my focus and I
- 45:21Speaker 1: knew that that was my time. So though it was
- 45:24Speaker 1: challenging and hard, I just I also looks forward to
- 45:28Speaker 1: it like that wasn't the part that stressed me out.
- 45:30Speaker 1: It was adding on to my workload that was stressful,
- 45:34Speaker 1: like that during the week, stuff that you have to
- 45:37Speaker 1: add on, you know, Oh, I just took on twenty
- 45:39Speaker 1: minute power work. I guess I should get some miles
- 45:40Speaker 1: in today, you know, so stuff like that.
- 45:43Speaker 3: When does the marathon on November third start to really
- 45:47Speaker 3: feel challenging for you?
- 45:50Speaker 2: So it felt.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Challenging at miles twenty, Yeah, miles twenty, because that's also
- 45:57Speaker 1: the furthest I went in my training.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Yeah, mile twenty, I was like woof, woof, woof.
- 46:05Speaker 3: And that's also when everything started crazy. I saw you
- 46:07Speaker 3: at seventeen yeah, yeah, so not for Peloton.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Before Peloton, I mean even when I saw you, it
- 46:13Speaker 1: was like, Okay, this is this is starting to get tough,
- 46:16Speaker 1: this is starting to get tough. You know. When I
- 46:19Speaker 1: saw Peloton, I had a really emotional breakdown.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Because I knew it was hard.
- 46:24Speaker 1: But then you got that boost from seeing all your
- 46:28Speaker 1: people and feeling all that love and getting a cry
- 46:30Speaker 1: out and somehow it just makes you feel good. Yeah.
- 46:33Speaker 2: And then mile twenty I was like, what is this?
- 46:38Speaker 1: Like? My legs everything was just like and then all
- 46:41Speaker 1: of a sudden, my stomach I just started feeling sick.
- 46:45Speaker 2: And that's also interesting.
- 46:46Speaker 1: One of my earbuds popped out when I hugged my friend,
- 46:50Speaker 1: and so I had no music from nineteen to twenty six,
- 46:53Speaker 1: and so I don't know if you experienced this, but
- 46:56Speaker 1: as you get to like twenty three twenty four, the
- 46:59Speaker 1: noise it started to make me feel nauseous, like it
- 47:03Speaker 1: was like overstimulated at that point, and I was just like, please,
- 47:10Speaker 1: let me just get to the finish line.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Just get to get to the fish line. You're doing
- 47:13Speaker 2: so good, Kirsten, you know. But yeah, it was interesting.
- 47:16Speaker 1: I never experienced I never thought that that's what I
- 47:18Speaker 1: would experience. I remember just being like, I'm so excited
- 47:21Speaker 1: for the crowds, but like towards the end, I was like,
- 47:24Speaker 1: I wish I had noise canceling headphones just to like
- 47:27Speaker 1: zone out a little bit because it was so hard
- 47:29Speaker 1: for me in that moment that I just wanted to close.
- 47:33Speaker 2: It out a little bit.
- 47:34Speaker 3: I understand strange. It's not strange, I understand. Yeah, it's
- 47:39Speaker 3: also very understandable that you would feel this way. And
- 47:43Speaker 3: is there some resistance there too, being vulnerable to allowing
- 47:49Speaker 3: all of these people.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Probably to show up for you? Probably? Yeah, probably. It
- 47:53Speaker 2: was just like, Okay, I need y'all to just let
- 47:56Speaker 2: me be.
- 47:57Speaker 1: I know y'all are here, like this is a Lott's
- 48:00Speaker 1: see you and then.
- 48:01Speaker 2: You wear the name yeah.
- 48:03Speaker 1: And so it's also like I didn't know if there
- 48:06Speaker 1: were Peloton members or if it was just someone saying
- 48:08Speaker 1: my name, Like do I turn for everyone? That's a
- 48:11Speaker 1: lot of energy that you spend. And so just towards
- 48:14Speaker 1: the end, I think I was just losing it, and
- 48:18Speaker 1: the only thing I kept visualizing was like, my daughters
- 48:21Speaker 1: are at the finish sign. My daughters are at the
- 48:22Speaker 1: finish sign. It's okay to walk a little bit. And
- 48:25Speaker 1: then you got to keep going. Your daughters are there,
- 48:27Speaker 1: They're waiting for you. They made signs. Yeah, get to
- 48:30Speaker 1: the end.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Yeah they did.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll talk about their signs in just a second.
- 48:34Speaker 3: Before we do, I want to bring you back to
- 48:36Speaker 3: mile nineteen when you saw the Peloton squad.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Was it how you visualized? Exactly how I visualized it.
- 48:47Speaker 1: I knew Jessins was going to be there.
- 48:50Speaker 3: I scared the hell out of her when I remire
- 48:52Speaker 3: she was looking the other way and I saw her
- 48:55Speaker 3: in her cute little brown hed and I reached for
- 48:57Speaker 3: her arm and then I'm like, oh my god, I
- 48:59Speaker 3: probably just scared the sh out of her. I reached
- 49:01Speaker 3: for her arm and I grab it.
- 49:02Speaker 2: She just like, oh my god. I'm like, oh my god,
- 49:04Speaker 2: that's so crazy.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Just like ran by her and I texted her yesterday
- 49:08Speaker 3: I was like, I am sorry for a time assaulting you,
- 49:11Speaker 3: assaulting you, and I ran, but you.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Knew she was going to be there.
- 49:14Speaker 1: I knew she was going to be there, And there
- 49:16Speaker 1: was just something about seeing them like I had envisioned
- 49:21Speaker 1: it for so long and so like running straight to
- 49:25Speaker 1: her was like I was running towards my sister. I
- 49:27Speaker 1: don't I don't have a sister. I'm an only son,
- 49:29Speaker 1: only child, and so like I think there was something
- 49:33Speaker 1: about just running towards her and knowing that she was
- 49:36Speaker 1: so proud of me, and all of them were, and
- 49:41Speaker 1: it was just a beautiful, super emotional moment for me,
- 49:45Speaker 1: Like even to see Robin out there like after you know,
- 49:49Speaker 1: her believing in me when I didn't believe myself, and
- 49:51Speaker 1: like just all the people there, Matt Wolper's was out there,
- 49:56Speaker 1: like I was just like, oh my god, I loved
- 49:58Speaker 1: y'all so much and they just the confetti bomb and
- 50:02Speaker 1: just hugging them and then just to be real and
- 50:04Speaker 1: just be like this is so hard, and like you
- 50:07Speaker 1: got this. You gotta keep going, keep going, You're so close,
- 50:10Speaker 1: You're doing so good. You know.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Just hearing that in that moment was what I needed
- 50:15Speaker 2: and so wild.
- 50:16Speaker 3: Also being on the other side, because I don't even
- 50:19Speaker 3: think when Jess ran the marathon in Boston that you
- 50:22Speaker 3: thought that you.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Were going to run a marathon. Oh gosh, absolutely not.
- 50:26Speaker 1: I was like, she is nuts, but I'm going to
- 50:28Speaker 1: go support her because you know, she had went through
- 50:30Speaker 1: her own challenges with injury, and I was like, I'm
- 50:33Speaker 1: going to go up here.
- 50:33Speaker 2: And you know, she didn't.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Tell anybody that she was doing it right, which I
- 50:36Speaker 1: think was a beautiful way to go about it too.
- 50:39Speaker 2: You know, I think we both that's how you could
- 50:40Speaker 2: tell we're both so different.
- 50:41Speaker 1: I tell everyone, She's like, I'm just going to do it,
- 50:43Speaker 1: and then I'll tell everybody after. But you know, just
- 50:48Speaker 1: being out there and being able to support her, and
- 50:50Speaker 1: I knew that she would be out there, you know,
- 50:52Speaker 1: cheering for me, and I was getting tons of text
- 50:54Speaker 1: messages from her like every mile, like keep going, yeah,
- 50:57Speaker 1: so good.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:59Speaker 3: You are running on Central Park South and you are
- 51:03Speaker 3: heading toward twenty six point two, you pass twenty six,
- 51:08Speaker 3: you're turning that right that Columbus Circle and you make
- 51:11Speaker 3: that final right into the park. Where's your head? Where's
- 51:15Speaker 3: your heart?
- 51:18Speaker 1: My head and my heart are connected, and I'm just
- 51:21Speaker 1: saying to myself. And I also ran with my pet,
- 51:25Speaker 1: and I was like, I did this, I did this,
- 51:27Speaker 1: I did this. I can I can almost see the
- 51:29Speaker 1: finish line. I remember like taking the the marathon scenic
- 51:35Speaker 1: classes on Teleton, and I remember the moment like I
- 51:37Speaker 1: remember like, this is the finish line is close, you know,
- 51:40Speaker 1: so I visually, I'm a visual person, so I knew
- 51:42Speaker 1: like it was coming. And I was like, Kirsten, you
- 51:45Speaker 1: really did this, you really did this, and you are
- 51:51Speaker 1: so close. You're so close. You're so close. Yeah, and
- 51:56Speaker 1: your daughters are literally inches away from you now at
- 52:00Speaker 1: this point. So where were they they were brought down
- 52:04Speaker 1: onto the finish line? Yeah, yeah, So I crossed the
- 52:07Speaker 1: finish line and I was like, where are my babies?
- 52:11Speaker 1: And then I look up and I see a sign
- 52:12Speaker 1: with my head on it, like like a cutout of
- 52:16Speaker 1: my head, and then like another sign, and I was like,
- 52:18Speaker 1: there they are, and I I ran right up to
- 52:23Speaker 1: them and I.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Just lost it. I lost it.
- 52:25Speaker 1: I lost it, and they were just like, we're so
- 52:28Speaker 1: proud of you, Mom, We're so proud of you. And
- 52:30Speaker 1: then Emory had my metal. Oh so she put the
- 52:34Speaker 1: metal around my neck.
- 52:36Speaker 2: And that was everything for me. Like that was for
- 52:48Speaker 2: them to be able to see how I went through
- 52:51Speaker 2: something so hard, to then get back and then to
- 52:55Speaker 2: do this was just and then to have her put
- 52:59Speaker 2: the metal on my neck, it was like just the
- 53:02Speaker 2: form of like them saying they're so proud of me
- 53:06Speaker 2: after it all was just my why and doing it all,
- 53:11Speaker 2: you know, is for them to see me as their example.
- 53:15Speaker 2: But like also know like I would do anything for them,
- 53:18Speaker 2: and for them to show up for me in that
- 53:20Speaker 2: day was beautiful for me, so beautiful.
- 53:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and you don't necessarily need to run twenty six
- 53:27Speaker 3: point two miles, I.
- 53:29Speaker 2: Know, know, like I'll never do that again. I'll I'll
- 53:32Speaker 2: just make them pancakes and they'll still be excited. They
- 53:35Speaker 2: will same excitement.
- 53:37Speaker 3: They will because you are their superhero. Yeah yeah hard
- 53:41Speaker 3: stop yeah right yeah. And so to see you for.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Them at that moment so special.
- 53:48Speaker 3: But it's really just solidifying it yet again what they
- 53:52Speaker 3: already know. Yeah, like Mom's here, she ain't going anywhere,
- 53:57Speaker 3: you know, and she will always make her way back
- 54:00Speaker 3: to you.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Yes, And I told him that.
- 54:03Speaker 1: In that moment, I was like, you are the reason
- 54:05Speaker 1: why I crossed the finish line.
- 54:06Speaker 2: I knew you were here.
- 54:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that is the only reason why I crossed the
- 54:10Speaker 1: finish line. You guys, the only reason why I cross
- 54:14Speaker 1: the finish line. I knew you were there. Yeah.
- 54:17Speaker 2: How'd you celebrate? So?
- 54:20Speaker 1: I had a house full of people. All my friends
- 54:24Speaker 1: came over. I had big brunch, but I was so
- 54:28Speaker 1: ill I couldn't even eat.
- 54:31Speaker 2: I didn't want to eat.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I pulled my legs and sleeves and sat and
- 54:36Speaker 1: I just wanted to calm down from it all and
- 54:41Speaker 1: just process it, you know. But everyone was just so
- 54:47Speaker 1: happy for me and wanted to celebrate, and I'm just
- 54:49Speaker 1: so grateful. I think for me also, it's accepting love
- 54:54Speaker 1: in a different way. For me, for so long, I
- 54:56Speaker 1: thought love had to come from a partner, and now
- 54:59Speaker 1: i'm it can come from so many different places and spaces.
- 55:03Speaker 1: And I felt so loved that day from people I
- 55:06Speaker 1: didn't even know to, like my chosen family to my family.
- 55:12Speaker 1: I just felt so much love. What about the love
- 55:16Speaker 1: from yourself? Still working on that, Yeah, I'm definitely still
- 55:21Speaker 1: working on that. But I did find some quiet time
- 55:27Speaker 1: in the shower while I was like, oh that chafed
- 55:29Speaker 1: a little, where I was like, I'm so proud of you.
- 55:35Speaker 1: I'm so proud of you Hereston. You worked really freaking
- 55:38Speaker 1: hard and you did that, and you told yourself you
- 55:41Speaker 1: would never do it, and you did it. And so
- 55:44Speaker 1: I did have that quiet moment in the shower. But
- 55:49Speaker 1: still still working on the love of me process.
- 55:52Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I've definitely mentioned this on the show before,
- 55:56Speaker 3: but I was once at a workshop and there were
- 55:58Speaker 3: maybe like forty five women in the room, and the
- 56:01Speaker 3: facilitator was like, I want you to think about someone
- 56:03Speaker 3: you love and write down like a sentiment to share
- 56:07Speaker 3: with them, and not a single woman in the room
- 56:11Speaker 3: thought about herself. And it's a testament really to what
- 56:19Speaker 3: ninety nine point nine percent of us always are doing.
- 56:23Speaker 3: We're naturally in community, we're naturally in service of others.
- 56:27Speaker 3: We're naturally people that aren't going to say I'm going
- 56:31Speaker 3: to put myself first. But what I would say is
- 56:35Speaker 3: one of my biggest lessons from doing this fourteen times
- 56:38Speaker 3: over is that I will never regret investing in myself.
- 56:42Speaker 3: I will never regret showing up for myself. And so
- 56:46Speaker 3: now when you reflect on your training process, your marathon journey,
- 56:51Speaker 3: what would you say has been one of your biggest takeaways?
- 56:57Speaker 1: One of my biggest takeaways I would say is stop
- 57:03Speaker 1: limiting yourself, Kirston. You are called to do so much,
- 57:11Speaker 1: and just stop believing the lies that you've been telling yourself.
- 57:15Speaker 2: What are some of the lies?
- 57:17Speaker 1: Not capable, not good enough, too slow, if too big
- 57:24Speaker 1: of hips.
- 57:28Speaker 2: Definitely can't run a marathon. You definitely can't run a
- 57:30Speaker 2: marathon with them hips, honey, And now you know that
- 57:35Speaker 2: not to be true.
- 57:36Speaker 1: It's not true. It's not true. You can run a
- 57:38Speaker 1: marathon with hips. Hey, Yeah, And like every runner looks different,
- 57:44Speaker 1: every mother brother looks different, and you know we get
- 57:48Speaker 1: the same metal. You know, you ran it a lot
- 57:51Speaker 1: faster than mine, but on this side it looks the same.
- 57:54Speaker 1: Yours hasn't graved. I don't have my time on it,
- 57:57Speaker 1: but it all it's all the same, right. Yeah, So
- 58:00Speaker 1: if you can get through that twenty six point two,
- 58:04Speaker 1: you're incredible, Yeah, incredible, incredible, incredible, regardless of how long
- 58:08Speaker 1: it takes you.
- 58:08Speaker 3: You know, I was honest, And how long it takes you.
- 58:10Speaker 3: It's so true. It's so true. I was the wall
- 58:13Speaker 3: in the studio that we're sitting in right now. I
- 58:16Speaker 3: have six big posters, and one for each of the
- 58:19Speaker 3: world marathon majors. New York is the only one that
- 58:22Speaker 3: I've run multiple times, and previously on the wall I
- 58:26Speaker 3: had the New York time, which also happened to be
- 58:29Speaker 3: my fastest marathon ever. And I got my new poster
- 58:33Speaker 3: yesterday and I came home and I thought to myself, Yeah,
- 58:36Speaker 3: I'm gonna put the new one in there, because it
- 58:39Speaker 3: isn't about the time for me. Yes, you can aspire
- 58:42Speaker 3: to something start.
- 58:43Speaker 2: I love that for you, It's part of it.
- 58:46Speaker 3: But when I think about the journey to each of
- 58:49Speaker 3: these different destinations, they are all so beautiful and so
- 58:52Speaker 3: special in their own way that they all deserve to
- 58:56Speaker 3: be celebrated, absolutely regardless of what those say at the end,
- 59:01Speaker 3: regardless of what's on the back of the metal.
- 59:04Speaker 1: The fact that you have one of these as awesome.
- 59:07Speaker 1: I love hearing the clinging.
- 59:10Speaker 2: Let me tell you something. They're like, Oh, you're gonna
- 59:12Speaker 2: wear your metal metal Monday.
- 59:13Speaker 1: I said, no metal year, honey, metal yahs, sick of
- 59:15Speaker 1: see in this thing? Because I'm wearing it everywhere.
- 59:17Speaker 2: You're gonna be sick of me.
- 59:18Speaker 1: You're gonna be Could you go and talk about that
- 59:21Speaker 1: metal again?
- 59:23Speaker 2: Would you do it again? No? Oh wow, I didn't
- 59:27Speaker 2: expect that, Gandi Bla. Really Yeah, No, you don't need
- 59:30Speaker 2: to do it. I don't need to do it again.
- 59:32Speaker 1: You feel full. I feel full, like I I can
- 59:37Speaker 1: really close the door on the fact that I said
- 59:43Speaker 1: I would never do this like I'm full, I'm full.
- 59:47Speaker 1: I don't need to do it again. I think for me,
- 59:50Speaker 1: I love the half marathon distance, and I think where
- 59:53Speaker 1: I want to play is maybe do more halves and
- 59:56Speaker 1: work on time there. But I also just want I
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: get back into strength training and challenge myself in other
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: ways and maybe find a different hobby. But I you know,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: I do appreciate running and I and I do love
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: that time. For me, I just don't know if I
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: need to do that distance. Yeah again, that's understandable. I'm
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: totally fine. Yeah, I want to like love like I
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: love that I did it. I did it, I did it.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: I don't have to do it again. You know. What's
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: also interesting is it's almost like kids, they're like, all right,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: we did that now what are you gonna do? It's like, uh,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: celebrate this, Yeah, but how important is that?
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: That is something that is so often overlooked.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: It's like we give ourselves this narrow window of time
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: to celebrate. That's it, and then it's like, Okay, onto
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: the next thing, On to the next thing.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: I want you to be like fully present and what
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: you just did, yeah, and all that you accomplished. Yeah,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: And I'm gonna sit in it for a while because
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: I feel like I still haven't fully processed at all,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: even sitting here talking to you. I'm a sit in
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: it for a while. I'm a sit in I'm a
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: celebrated and yeah, I don't know if I need to
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: do it again.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Though you sat in your pause era for a while, Yeah,
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: you might as well sit in this one for a
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: while too.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: I love it. I love it here.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: It's done for anyone else who ever doubted that they
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: could too take on a feat like this. Maybe it's
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: a marathon. What do you have to say to them?
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: What I told myself, Stop believing the lies that you've
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: been telling yourself. You're capable. I always believe that if
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: you have that feeling on your heart, we all know
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: what that feeling is. But when you don't feel like
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: you're qualified or capable, you just tell yourself you can't. Instead,
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: what if you just say, well, it's on my heart,
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: let me try, let me try and see what happens.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: And there's gonna be peaks and valleys in that too,
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: but still try, still try. If it's not your heart,
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: try it, try it. What's the worst that could happen.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: What's the worst that could happen? You learn something new
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: about yourself. I'm gonna make that a gift and just
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: like keep that out in my life. Like you just saying,
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: what's the worst that.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: Could happen, the worst that could happen.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: I love that you have an opportunity right now as
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: we finish up, to offer yourself a piece of advice.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: If we go back to the pause era, if we
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: go back to the woman that was so beside herself
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: with frustration that she was nowhere where she wanted to be.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: Knowing what you know now having that metal around your neck,
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: what do you tell her?
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: I have a lot to tell her, but I would
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: first tell her that I am proud of her, proud
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: of her. Then in that moment in that moment, because
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: it was one of the darkest times in my life,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: to be honest, where I just felt like all that
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: I worked hard for.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: I worked so hard to.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Get through the divorce, to get to Peloton, to learn
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: everything I needed to learn to then be running and
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: things be great, you know in flow I like to
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: call it, and then for it all to come to
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: a halt, and I didn't know if I was going
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: to be able to run again, and I didn't know
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: like this was my livelihood, this that I provide for
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: my children. Didn't know all that, and then I had
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: so much to heal. I did all that in that moment,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: before even the vision of a marathon. I would want
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: her to know I'm proud of her. I'm so proud
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: of her as she is she is. Oh my god,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: I'm so happy for you. Thanks, I'm so proud of you.
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: It has like been it has been such a joy
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: to watch you on this journey and I'm grateful to
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: have been the smallest part of it.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: No, you were a big part of it. So thank you.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: Like your encouragement throughout this whole process has been for me,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Like I think you even saw something in me that
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: I didn't see in myself either, Like, so I appreciate
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: you down girl.
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I mean, but that's again that goes back
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: to our conversation about like, when you're in it, it's hard.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: It's hard, and we are so lucky to have the
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: opportunity to show up for people that we love.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: Absolutely, and like you said on the day of the marathon,
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: it reminds you that that is truly an opportunity. And
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: so now I think that, you know, we get to
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: continue to do that without hundreds of thousands of people
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: in one place.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: Exactly the quiet and the quient.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: For those that aren't following along with you just yet
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: tell us how we keep up with you on social.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: You can follow me on Instagram I am Kirsten Ferguson
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: and catch me on Peloton, Peloton, Tread, Peloton Outdoor. I'd
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: love to see you.

- 1:04:51Speaker 2: four moments.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: I am over at Emily a Body and at Hurdle
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: Podcast Another Hurdle Conquered.
