- 2:13Speaker 6: We're not going to turn into an all sports show,
- 2:14Speaker 6: all right, so just rest assured on that, but we
- 2:16Speaker 6: are going to spend some time talking about that. Also.
- 2:19Speaker 6: A little bit later on, our good buddy Evan Osborne
- 2:20Speaker 6: from Capital Market is going to be stopping by. They
- 2:23Speaker 6: are gearing up for the Christmas season and have been
- 2:25Speaker 6: for some time, so we'll talk to Evan Osborne about that. Plus,

- 2:37Speaker 6: nine three five five zero zero eight. But first, there
- 2:39Speaker 6: is a special event coming up in the month of February,
- 2:42Speaker 6: and the reason we're talking about it now is it
- 2:45Speaker 6: takes a lot of time to get everything lined up
- 2:47Speaker 6: for it, with sponsors and whatnot. It's called a Night
- 2:49Speaker 6: to Shine and it asks a little do with the
- 2:53Speaker 6: Tim Tebow Foundation. Te Bow, of course, former Florida Gator,
- 2:56Speaker 6: former Heisman Trophy winner NFL Star now at College Football Analyst,
- 2:59Speaker 6: and it Foundation has set out to really do a
- 3:02Speaker 6: whole lot of good in the world, including this event
- 3:04Speaker 6: called a Night to Shine February seventh, Capitol High and
- 3:07Speaker 6: it's hosted by the Southeast Church of the Nazarene. But
- 3:10Speaker 6: it's not a church event. It's a prom for special
- 3:13Speaker 6: need folks. And Courtney Elswick one of the people who's
- 3:16Speaker 6: helping to plan this whole thing. She joins us now
- 3:18Speaker 6: in the par Mars store studio. Courtney, good morning, welcome
- 3:20Speaker 6: to the show.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Morning. Thank you for having me.
- 3:22Speaker 6: You are rare to go this morning, are you? I
- 3:23Speaker 6: am all right. We appreciate you being here. So tell
- 3:26Speaker 6: us from the overall picture, what exactly is going to happen.
- 3:30Speaker 7: Out there, everything to just make these individuals feel like
- 3:36Speaker 7: the King and Queen that they are red carpet, paparazzi full,
- 3:41Speaker 7: you know, sit down, dinner pictures, dancing, the whole thing.
- 3:46Speaker 6: And where did this idea come from to do this?
- 3:49Speaker 7: So the vision back in twenty fourteen is when they
- 3:53Speaker 7: launched the first Night to Shine, it was, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 7: on quite a smaller scale. The whole point of it
- 3:59Speaker 7: was to just bring to and communities together to celebrate
- 4:02Speaker 7: the love of God and those individuals in the special
- 4:05Speaker 7: needs and disabled community that may not always have things
- 4:09Speaker 7: like this to make it feel all about them.
- 4:11Speaker 6: I mean and you and you first reached out to me,
- 4:14Speaker 6: I guess a couple of months ago, and we invited
- 4:16Speaker 6: you into the office here have a little meeting on
- 4:18Speaker 6: how we can help you out with this. I know
- 4:20Speaker 6: our I'm going to give a big shout out to
- 4:21Speaker 6: the folks across the hat or sister Station V one hundred.
- 4:23Speaker 6: I know Stephen, Jenny and Logan Scott and all those
- 4:26Speaker 6: fine folks of V one hundred are planning on being
- 4:28Speaker 6: a major major part of this as well, and so
- 4:31Speaker 6: just a big hats off to them. But talk about
- 4:35Speaker 6: the people that are going to be the ones that
- 4:37Speaker 6: are going to be in the attentions, the ones that
- 4:39Speaker 6: are going to be shining that night, these folks.
- 4:41Speaker 7: So this is a completely free event for anyone ages
- 4:45Speaker 7: fourteen and up, any disabilities, special needs. Again, this is
- 4:50Speaker 7: just to celebrate them, show them God's love, show them community,
- 4:54Speaker 7: and just that they matter so much. So again, this
- 4:58Speaker 7: is a completely free event teen and up. We want
- 5:02Speaker 7: them to feel like royalty.
- 5:04Speaker 6: And again it's happening in February sevbur right. But the
- 5:07Speaker 6: reason that we're having on you and we're going to
- 5:09Speaker 6: have you on a few times, not only us, but
- 5:11Speaker 6: one hundred and the other stations will as well, because
- 5:14Speaker 6: now is the time when all of the heavy lifting
- 5:17Speaker 6: is getting done. This is when sponsorships are needed and
- 5:20Speaker 6: lining up volunteers. Talk about that.
- 5:23Speaker 7: So we do have a good start for volunteers. Absolutely,
- 5:26Speaker 7: the more the merrier, we cannot do this without volunteers.
- 5:29Speaker 7: The more honored guests that we have, the more volunteers
- 5:32Speaker 7: that are needed. So we will continue to take volunteers
- 5:36Speaker 7: up until the day of They can get in touch
- 5:39Speaker 7: with me, they can get in touch with the church.
- 5:41Speaker 7: There are so many places that we can use volunteers.
- 5:44Speaker 7: As far as sp sponsorships go, obviously, things like this
- 5:47Speaker 7: take money. Sure, Again, the more individuals that we have,
- 5:51Speaker 7: the more money that we're going to need. And then
- 5:55Speaker 7: it's at this point just really about getting it out there,
- 5:58Speaker 7: letting guests know that we're having the event so that
- 6:00Speaker 7: they can get registered. We are going to need headcounts
- 6:03Speaker 7: for things, make sure that we have enough crowns and
- 6:05Speaker 7: trs to go around carssages and butineers buddies, because everyone
- 6:10Speaker 7: that is a guest will be paired up with a
- 6:12Speaker 7: non special needs individual for the night just as their buddy.
- 6:15Speaker 7: They will have somebody you know at their beck and
- 6:18Speaker 7: call for the entire evening.
- 6:20Speaker 6: It sounds like it's going to be a great event.
- 6:21Speaker 6: And again it's happening February seventh. It's at Capitol High
- 6:24Speaker 6: But even though it's it's happening at Capitol High School,
- 6:27Speaker 6: this is not just obviously for Capitol High students. It's
- 6:29Speaker 6: open to.
- 6:30Speaker 7: Anybody absolutely again fourteen and up, and that's anywhere. I believe.
- 6:33Speaker 7: The last time I checked, there were only four of
- 6:35Speaker 7: these happening in the state of West Virginia. So there's
- 6:38Speaker 7: one in Scott Depot, there's one in Fairmont, US, there's
- 6:44Speaker 7: one in Capital County at a church in Huntington. So
- 6:51Speaker 7: all of those are more than welcome. Registrations open for those.
- 6:54Speaker 7: But I mean, there are so many other places that
- 6:57Speaker 7: don't have one close that we would be more than happy.
- 7:00Speaker 6: And I want to throw this out there again. The
- 7:02Speaker 6: reason we're talking with Courtney els week about this Night
- 7:04Speaker 6: to Shine special needs event that's happening in February, but
- 7:07Speaker 6: now's the time that you really need to get the volunteers,
- 7:10Speaker 6: but you also need some help. And this is why
- 7:13Speaker 6: I wanted to have you on the show this early.
- 7:15Speaker 6: A Courtney was to talk about we have a lot
- 7:17Speaker 6: of folks in the business community to listen to this
- 7:20Speaker 6: show and all of the shows on our station. So
- 7:24Speaker 6: if you are a business, and I mean they would
- 7:28Speaker 6: love to have your sponsorship available, they'd love to have
- 7:30Speaker 6: you be a part of and you're going to get
- 7:31Speaker 6: something out of this as well, not only the touchy
- 7:34Speaker 6: feely stuff that's going to come with it, but there's
- 7:36Speaker 6: also going to be some added value if you are
- 7:38Speaker 6: a sponsor, if you're X YSE car dealership, I'm just
- 7:42Speaker 6: doing that out there or whatever, because you're going to
- 7:44Speaker 6: get a whole lot of advertising and you're going to
- 7:46Speaker 6: let your name out there thrown out there a lot.
- 7:48Speaker 6: That's why one of the reasons why we're always here
- 7:51Speaker 6: at WVRC Media Charleston, we're always happy to help out
- 7:54Speaker 6: folks with anything going on in the community, but we're
- 7:57Speaker 6: looking forward to getting involved with it as well. What
- 7:59Speaker 6: is the best way for people that are listening right
- 8:02Speaker 6: now they're saying, Look, I want to sponsor this. I
- 8:04Speaker 6: want to be a part of this. I want my
- 8:06Speaker 6: employees to help out. I want my kids to help out.
- 8:08Speaker 6: What's the best way to get in touch with you?
- 8:10Speaker 7: So they can contact me directly? Uh, I'm trying to
- 8:16Speaker 7: trying to think of what my email is right now.
- 8:19Speaker 7: They can email me. They can contact the church. It's
- 8:22Speaker 7: Southeast Church and then Azarene on more Corporal Avenue. They
- 8:26Speaker 7: can you know, they will be able to put them
- 8:29Speaker 7: in touch with me. Again, I'm the main planner over this.
- 8:33Speaker 7: They can find the church's Facebook page. The event itself
- 8:36Speaker 7: has a Facebook page. I'm in charge of all of those.
- 8:38Speaker 6: So and I shared your graphic on my on my
- 8:42Speaker 6: social media pages this morning and previewing the show.
- 8:44Speaker 7: So people emails on there.
- 8:45Speaker 6: It's on there, It's on the poster.
- 8:47Speaker 7: Okay, I want to say, it's as the Nazarene and
- 8:50Speaker 7: we'll get take.
- 8:51Speaker 6: Care of We'll get it to you.
- 8:52Speaker 7: It's on there.
- 8:52Speaker 6: But when you said that you need other volunteers, let's
- 8:55Speaker 6: talk about what kind of volunteer opportunities are available.
- 8:58Speaker 7: So the biggest need right now for buddies, which again
- 9:01Speaker 7: are the individuals that are paired up with our honored
- 9:03Speaker 7: guests to make sure that they know where they're going.
- 9:06Speaker 7: Maybe some of these individuals have never been to Capitol
- 9:09Speaker 7: High School. They don't know where the restrooms are, they
- 9:11Speaker 7: don't know where the karaoke is going to be or
- 9:13Speaker 7: the photo booth, and those buddies are going to be
- 9:15Speaker 7: able to assist them with that. For the evening, there
- 9:19Speaker 7: are going to be areas for the gift bags to
- 9:22Speaker 7: give those out. People are going to be giving out crowns, tiaras, boutineers.
- 9:27Speaker 7: This is a full sit down meal that we're going
- 9:29Speaker 7: to have offered, So that's going to be catered, but
- 9:32Speaker 7: we're going to need people to help serve that, clean up, photographers, paparazzi, just.
- 9:38Speaker 6: All of it. And I would think that you should
- 9:41Speaker 6: be able to get some volunteers from some of the
- 9:43Speaker 6: other local schools. There are contemporaries of the of that
- 9:46Speaker 6: you know that general age GROP because she said it's
- 9:48Speaker 6: open to any age fourteen to uugh, But I mean,
- 9:50Speaker 6: I would think that the students at Capitol High, the
- 9:52Speaker 6: students of South Charleston, Saint Albans, any of the GW
- 9:56Speaker 6: local schools may want to get involved in this as well,
- 9:58Speaker 6: because there's i mean, the that would be kind of
- 10:02Speaker 6: cool to have them there as well. Right, absolutely, yeah,
- 10:05Speaker 6: Well the event is called a Night to Shine, and
- 10:08Speaker 6: it's going to be February seventh of Capitol High And
- 10:10Speaker 6: although it is open to we want to make sure
- 10:12Speaker 6: people realize it's open to anyone fourteen and up with
- 10:17Speaker 6: special needs. Everybody's that comes is going to have a
- 10:20Speaker 6: great time. Before we close, talk about some of the
- 10:23Speaker 6: things that are going to be there. You said it's
- 10:24Speaker 6: going to be as much like a actual prom. Actually,
- 10:27Speaker 6: the things you were telling me about most actual. There's
- 10:30Speaker 6: been one hundred years since I was in since I
- 10:32Speaker 6: went to a prompt. I don't think that my prom
- 10:36Speaker 6: had all this stuff back in the nineteen eighty something.
- 10:39Speaker 6: So you got a full set down meal, you've got
- 10:43Speaker 6: the tiara's, you've got the sash of the whole deal, right.
- 10:46Speaker 7: Yes, absolutely, So. There will be a karaoke station, photo booth,
- 10:51Speaker 7: your standard prom pictures, the red carpet. As you walk in,
- 10:55Speaker 7: they'll announce your name. Paparazzi out there taking photos of
- 11:00Speaker 7: just your entrance, the you know, the main dance floor area.
- 11:03Speaker 7: There will be a sensory room for some of our
- 11:06Speaker 7: guests that may need a timeout or some sure that
- 11:09Speaker 7: will be available. There will be therapy dogs. They're visiting
- 11:12Speaker 7: US limousine services to take people on rides if they
- 11:16Speaker 7: would like. There will be an area for people to
- 11:19Speaker 7: get their hair and makeup touched up, shoeshine stations, just
- 11:23Speaker 7: a little bit of everything.
- 11:24Speaker 6: And we're going to have you on a couple times
- 11:25Speaker 6: between now and then to kind of gauge the where
- 11:27Speaker 6: you are in the whole process. But again, it's February
- 11:30Speaker 6: seventh and Capitol High and the reason I wanted you
- 11:32Speaker 6: on now is because people need to contact you if
- 11:34Speaker 6: you They definitely need sponsors for this sort of thing.
- 11:37Speaker 6: They need people just to help out, just as you said,
- 11:39Speaker 6: just to be buddies as you call them, just to
- 11:41Speaker 6: be there and to help out. It's going to be
- 11:42Speaker 6: a great, great, great night, and again our sister station
- 11:44Speaker 6: V one hundred is going to be a big part
- 11:46Speaker 6: of that. Courtney, I appreciate you being here. I've got
- 11:48Speaker 6: information again, absolutely, I've got information again posted on my

- 16:06Speaker 10: If we're not careful, you know, if I'm not mistaken,
- 16:08Speaker 10: this is like the very historic part of the building.
- 16:11Speaker 6: The whole building's historic.
- 16:13Speaker 10: Well in this part specifically is probably where we're setting.
- 16:16Speaker 10: Was where JFK was in sixty sixty, nineteen sixty when
- 16:22Speaker 10: he came, he visited here. Oh okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 10: I figured you would know.
- 16:27Speaker 6: No, they don't. They don't tell me.
- 16:28Speaker 10: I think it's probably right here, all right.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Yeah, I didn't know that. We'll have to put a
- 16:33Speaker 6: plaque or something up, correct, all right? So Jimmy really
- 16:37Speaker 6: came as no one surprise. After the WV loss over
- 16:41Speaker 6: the weekend at Texas Tech, the Neil Brown was relieved
- 16:44Speaker 6: of his duties as coach of the Mountaineer football team.
- 16:48Speaker 6: So following that defeat, and it was an absolute butt
- 16:52Speaker 6: whipping at the hands of Texas Tech, the writing was
- 16:56Speaker 6: pretty much on the wall for the Neil Brown air
- 16:58Speaker 6: in Morgantown.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Would you not agree?
- 17:00Speaker 10: Yeah, I think so. I think. I mean the last
- 17:03Speaker 10: issue before that game of Walies and Whippies, the cover
- 17:07Speaker 10: was will Neil Brown survived Black Friday, Black Monday, whatever
- 17:12Speaker 10: you call it. I think it was. It was a
- 17:15Speaker 10: long shot to think that they would bring him back,
- 17:18Speaker 10: and it was sealed by the second quarter. I think
- 17:21Speaker 10: they just weren't competitive, and I think that's what it
- 17:24Speaker 10: comes down to.
- 17:24Speaker 6: Hobby said, that's exactly what Hoppy said on his show.
- 17:27Speaker 6: He said that the Neil Brown eraic came to an
- 17:29Speaker 6: end at halftime that game.
- 17:31Speaker 10: It did. I didn't hear Hoppy.
- 17:33Speaker 6: He's a smart guy, yeah, he said, Well, he said
- 17:35Speaker 6: that on one of the Monday or Tuesday of this
- 17:36Speaker 6: week on the show. And you know, I'm certainly not
- 17:40Speaker 6: someone that's been as close to the Mountaineer program and
- 17:43Speaker 6: all the movers and shakers as as.
- 17:45Speaker 3: You have been.
- 17:45Speaker 6: But most agree though that overall Neil Brown was was
- 17:50Speaker 6: really a good dude. It just didn't work out in Morgan.
- 17:52Speaker 10: You're right, you know. In Rin Baker's press conference yesterday,
- 17:57Speaker 10: everything that he said about Neil Brown was outstanding. I mean,
- 18:01Speaker 10: he said, if I had the script how a difficult
- 18:05Speaker 10: couple of days could have gone, it would have been
- 18:08Speaker 10: exactly the way it happened. He said that Neil Brown
- 18:11Speaker 10: handled it with class, which you kind of expected that.
- 18:14Speaker 10: I mean, he's a good guy.
- 18:16Speaker 6: Nobody I've never heard anybody say anything negative off the
- 18:20Speaker 6: field about Neil Brown. There was not a hint of
- 18:23Speaker 6: controversy anywhere there during his tenure as mountaineer coach. No
- 18:27Speaker 6: issues with recruits or doing things that he shouldn't be
- 18:30Speaker 6: doing or whatever. He just genuinely seemed like a good guy.
- 18:34Speaker 10: And if you read between the lines, you know that
- 18:36Speaker 10: was about an hour long press conference and everything that
- 18:39Speaker 10: he said that he's looking for in a coach, I mean,
- 18:42Speaker 10: Neil Brown checked all the boxes except one that's winning. Yeah,
- 18:46Speaker 10: I mean everything that he wanted off the field, you know,
- 18:50Speaker 10: as far as a good guy, he said he wanted
- 18:52Speaker 10: somebody with integrity. That was a non negotiable. He wanted
- 18:57Speaker 10: somebody that was a leader, not just a coach, you know,
- 19:00Speaker 10: off the field, thinking about academics and life enrichment, things
- 19:05Speaker 10: like that. That was Neil Brown. But the wins didn't
- 19:09Speaker 10: match up, and they had to move on.
- 19:12Speaker 6: Doctor Jim Workman of Wally and Whimby is about the
- 19:14Speaker 6: WVU football coaching situation at Dave Island, showing five eighty
- 19:17Speaker 6: life brought to you in part by Fresh Air Filters
- 19:19Speaker 6: of Chay's Valley Fresh Air your trusted filter experts for
- 19:21Speaker 6: both your home or business called three zero four four
- 19:24Speaker 6: four zero one one zero four or visit fresh Air
- 19:26Speaker 6: Filters dot us because everyone deserves fresh air. All right.
- 19:30Speaker 6: So now the big question is, mister Workman, what's next.
- 19:34Speaker 10: You know, it's really going to be exciting. I mean,
- 19:37Speaker 10: in this era that we're in. I mean, there's just
- 19:40Speaker 10: so many things to consider because you know, there's no
- 19:44Speaker 10: reaching out and getting a don Neelan from the Michigan
- 19:48Speaker 10: staff and having him coach your football team. Way more
- 19:52Speaker 10: dynamics than that. You have to get somebody that is
- 19:55Speaker 10: a motivator. As far as fundraising. You know, they have
- 19:59Speaker 10: to be successful.
- 20:00Speaker 6: It's not x's and o's just x's and o's anymore.
- 20:02Speaker 10: That's right, That's right. So and then you have all
- 20:05Speaker 10: these other things. Think about this, right before the first
- 20:08Speaker 10: game of the season, how much excitement was in Morgantown
- 20:12Speaker 10: when Penn State was coming. Pat McAfee brought a lot
- 20:15Speaker 10: of that excitement in and that's the type of guys
- 20:18Speaker 10: that are going to have some influence. Pat McAfee, he's
- 20:22Speaker 10: already talking about it on his national show, probably the
- 20:25Speaker 10: highest RTED podcast or show in the nation. And you know,
- 20:29Speaker 10: not only that, but Adam pac Man Jones is talking
- 20:31Speaker 10: to people. He had rich Rodriguez on his show this week,
- 20:34Speaker 10: pushing for Rich Rod because he played with him. I mean,
- 20:37Speaker 10: you've got so many people. This is a national program
- 20:40Speaker 10: now that really has an opportunity because it is a
- 20:44Speaker 10: watered down Big twelve. They have an opportunity to get
- 20:47Speaker 10: in that top sixteen seed and that's where the big money,
- 20:50Speaker 10: that's where the TV money and all the attention comes from.
- 20:53Speaker 6: And I think it's interesting that you bring that up.
- 20:55Speaker 6: And I'm going to make a statement here, and I
- 20:57Speaker 6: don't want to upset people when I say this question. Uh,
- 21:01Speaker 6: I guess is the job though in Morgantown everything that
- 21:05Speaker 6: is cracked up to be now hear me out on
- 21:06Speaker 6: this because in West Virginia and Ren Baker talked about
- 21:10Speaker 6: that in this press conference yesterday. We don't have a
- 21:13Speaker 6: pro team. You know, there are those of us that
- 21:15Speaker 6: follow our pro teams. Sorry you're a Browns fan, uh,
- 21:19Speaker 6: but a lot of Steeler fans, Bengals fans, whatever. We
- 21:21Speaker 6: get all wrapped up in our teams, but not necessarily
- 21:23Speaker 6: we don't have that pro team. People look to WVU
- 21:26Speaker 6: and look, I'm a Marshall guy one hundred percent. However,
- 21:29Speaker 6: I understand the way the dynamics work out. It's West
- 21:31Speaker 6: Virginia and in one at one and and Marshall at
- 21:35Speaker 6: second and the others after that. I completely get that.
- 21:38Speaker 6: Is is the is the you you think this job
- 21:41Speaker 6: is really all it's cracked up to be in what
- 21:43Speaker 6: Mountaineer fans make it out to be.
- 21:45Speaker 10: Well, I'll recall a statement that ren Baker made yesterday
- 21:49Speaker 10: which was impactful. So there's two ways to answer your question.
- 21:52Speaker 10: In the state of West Virginia, he said, this is
- 21:55Speaker 10: a big decision because it's a financial commitment and it's
- 21:59Speaker 10: a finantial windfall potentially for the university. But then very interesting,
- 22:04Speaker 10: he said, it's big for the health and the morale
- 22:08Speaker 10: of the state. Think about that. I mean, people do
- 22:13Speaker 10: care about the football program. Yeah, and they come to
- 22:16Speaker 10: work on Monday morning and at the water cooler they
- 22:19Speaker 10: either have the long face or they're doing high fives.
- 22:23Speaker 10: That was a really unique statement coming from an athletic
- 22:28Speaker 10: director about a coaching Chaine that's on their mind. So nationally,
- 22:32Speaker 10: I think it has potential to be a top twenty
- 22:34Speaker 10: five program only because if you think back when they
- 22:37Speaker 10: were in the Big East and they were doing well
- 22:40Speaker 10: and they were top ranked in the Top ten, I
- 22:43Speaker 10: mean that was the type of competition they were playing
- 22:46Speaker 10: what they are playing now in the Big twelve. So
- 22:48Speaker 10: potentially you can be a nine or ten win team consistently. Now,
- 22:53Speaker 10: if you do it right, you.
- 22:55Speaker 6: Want to talk with Jim Workman of Wally Wipe's all right,
- 22:58Speaker 6: since you want ahead it and brought up the name Trod.
- 23:01Speaker 6: What I have found in talking to people and what
- 23:03Speaker 6: I've seen on social media and so on and so forth,
- 23:05Speaker 6: is the names that I hear more than any others
- 23:07Speaker 6: are the return to Rich Rodriguez or Jimbo Fisher. Now,
- 23:11Speaker 6: I talked to somebody yesterday pretty close to the program.
- 23:16Speaker 6: I mean, very very close to the program. I talked
- 23:18Speaker 6: to yesterday who said to me, there is zero chance
- 23:20Speaker 6: that Jimbo Fisher gets this job in Morgantown. Now, everybody's
- 23:25Speaker 6: been proven wrong before your thoughts on a Jimbo or
- 23:28Speaker 6: a Rich Rod or someone else.
- 23:30Speaker 10: Here's here's my answer to that. Last week, Thursday Thanksgiving
- 23:35Speaker 10: dinner was amazing. It tasted great by Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 23:39Speaker 10: I didn't want any part of that.
- 23:42Speaker 6: I think leave it to you to come up with
- 23:43Speaker 6: a food analogy.
- 23:45Speaker 10: I think that's rich Rod. I don't think you want
- 23:47Speaker 10: the leftovers after several days. It was great back in
- 23:51Speaker 10: the day. That day was amazing. I don't think we
- 23:54Speaker 10: want to go back there.
- 23:55Speaker 6: And people have short memories. I mean, Rich Rod did
- 23:57Speaker 6: not exactly leave here, you know, with a lot of fanfare,
- 24:00Speaker 6: and there was a lot of bad blood. Of course,
- 24:03Speaker 6: sports fans have some of the shortest memories in the world.
- 24:07Speaker 6: You know, they're willing to let buy guns be buy guns.
- 24:10Speaker 6: He is a West Virginia guy. But something that was
- 24:12Speaker 6: pointed out in the article that I read in the
- 24:14Speaker 6: Gazette Mail yesterday was, you know, rich is not a
- 24:17Speaker 6: young guy by coaching standards. I mean, he's sixty, okay,
- 24:22Speaker 6: and that's not old by any stretch of the imagination.
- 24:24Speaker 6: That's kind of you and I are headed that way.
- 24:28Speaker 6: But you know, do we need somebody who's going to
- 24:32Speaker 6: be a little younger, who maybe not as traveled. I
- 24:35Speaker 6: don't know.
- 24:36Speaker 10: I think you have to listen. I think Rin Baker
- 24:39Speaker 10: again in his press conference, sas he's cast a wide net.
- 24:43Speaker 10: He's looking at a lot of things, but he's in
- 24:45Speaker 10: the next couple of days he's going to narrow that.
- 24:47Speaker 10: And you know, Rich does have a lot of support
- 24:50Speaker 10: from people like you know, pac Man Jones and Pat
- 24:54Speaker 10: McAfee and Ken Kendrick, probably the owner of the Arizona Diamondback,
- 25:00Speaker 10: who has a deep pockets so reportedly he's a huge
- 25:04Speaker 10: Rich Rod fan, and you know, those type of people
- 25:07Speaker 10: could see an opportunity to talk to Rin Baker and
- 25:10Speaker 10: at least get him an interview.
- 25:12Speaker 6: But what about Jimbo Fisher.
- 25:14Speaker 10: I don't know about Jimbo's contract well enough to know
- 25:19Speaker 10: if that is feasible, because Texas A and M still
- 25:22Speaker 10: owes him a ton of money, and I believe if
- 25:25Speaker 10: he takes another job, I don't know if that also
- 25:28Speaker 10: includes like a consulting type position or you know, an
- 25:33Speaker 10: assistant to the ad. But he cannot coach and still
- 25:37Speaker 10: collect that huge paycheck that he's getting right now. So
- 25:41Speaker 10: it would be reduced. So, you know, what do you
- 25:44Speaker 10: do if you're jim But I think he's interested. What
- 25:46Speaker 10: the scenario that I would love to see is either
- 25:49Speaker 10: a Nick Saban or a Jimbo Fisher get involved with
- 25:52Speaker 10: the WU football program and bring along a mentor or
- 25:56Speaker 10: mentor a coach, a young guy who's the next coming
- 26:00Speaker 10: guy and be with him for a couple of years,
- 26:03Speaker 10: go out on these visits with him, get some minil money,
- 26:06Speaker 10: and they can make an impact without being on the sideline.
- 26:10Speaker 6: Speaking of nil, text says without nil money, WVU will
- 26:14Speaker 6: not be able to compete on the national scale.
- 26:16Speaker 10: Nobody can. There's not a team that can compete without
- 26:20Speaker 10: nil money. That's coming.
- 26:22Speaker 6: For those who don't know, we throw a lot of
- 26:25Speaker 6: a lot of sports terms, sports guys, nil's name, image
- 26:28Speaker 6: and likeness. That's right, And basically this is the money
- 26:32Speaker 6: that you see athletes that come in and they get
- 26:35Speaker 6: paid to endorse certain products or they get to do,
- 26:37Speaker 6: you know, certain appearance fees or whatever. This was something
- 26:41Speaker 6: that was taboo although we all know it was going on,
- 26:44Speaker 6: it was taboo for years and it looks like now
- 26:47Speaker 6: they're finally starting to get a handle on this at
- 26:50Speaker 6: least they're heading in that direction because for the first
- 26:51Speaker 6: couple of years of NIL, not only at WVU, I
- 26:55Speaker 6: mean certainly at other places, it was wild wide west.
- 26:57Speaker 6: I mean there were no rules or whatever. More college
- 27:00Speaker 6: are now getting nil people that this is what they do.
- 27:04Speaker 6: I know former Marshalls standout Stevie Browning's kind of handling
- 27:07Speaker 6: this from Marshall University right now. But that's a good
- 27:10Speaker 6: point by the texture of them.
- 27:11Speaker 10: The other dynamic about in IL is the transfer portal. Yeah,
- 27:17Speaker 10: if you are not in the starting lineup as a freshman,
- 27:20Speaker 10: and you think that you deserve to be, you're going
- 27:23Speaker 10: to look around and see, you know, where can I
- 27:26Speaker 10: get INIL money or where can I increase my value
- 27:30Speaker 10: with playing time? And I need to go over there
- 27:33Speaker 10: and have you know, my junior and senior years to
- 27:36Speaker 10: collect this INIOL money. It is the wild wild West.
- 27:38Speaker 6: It has changed, I mean so much over the last
- 27:41Speaker 6: couple of years. I had somebody in the world of
- 27:44Speaker 6: college football who told me several months ago that college
- 27:46Speaker 6: football has changed more in the last five six years
- 27:50Speaker 6: than what it has in the previous fifty. The only
- 27:53Speaker 6: other changes we had were maybe TV contracts or the
- 27:56Speaker 6: equipment got better, or more emphasis on concussion protocols and
- 27:59Speaker 6: things like that's really the only thing that changed. But
- 28:02Speaker 6: this has changed everything. And for a sports fan, whether
- 28:06Speaker 6: it's and it could be basketball, football is obviously because
- 28:08Speaker 6: there's more players. The Mountaineer team that was put on
- 28:13Speaker 6: the field this year, no matter what, no matter who
- 28:16Speaker 6: the coach is, is not going to be the Mountaineer
- 28:17Speaker 6: team next year. And you know, we're used to the
- 28:20Speaker 6: old days when you see a guy that comes in
- 28:21Speaker 6: as a true freshman right out of high school and
- 28:24Speaker 6: you red shirty or whatever, and you said, well this
- 28:27Speaker 6: guy or this it's you know, female athlet is, this
- 28:29Speaker 6: person is going to be great by the time they
- 28:32Speaker 6: get to be a sophomore. Well, their chances are they're
- 28:34Speaker 6: not going to be there when they're a sophomore. The
- 28:36Speaker 6: teams don't even I mean, look at the Mountaineer basketball team,
- 28:38Speaker 6: I mean, who are these guys last year, you know,
- 28:40Speaker 6: I mean, nobody is a completely starting lineup.
- 28:43Speaker 10: They brought one guy back on, one guy on the
- 28:45Speaker 10: whole roster. Now, I'll also say about Marshall. Marshall had
- 28:49Speaker 10: forty new players on its football team this year. Marshall
- 28:53Speaker 10: did I mean that is going to be the regular
- 28:58Speaker 10: for everybody. I mean, you're going to have a turnover
- 29:01Speaker 10: between thirty and forty players every year. You may as
- 29:04Speaker 10: well get used to it.
- 29:05Speaker 6: It's the times. They are a change. And before we
- 29:08Speaker 6: let you go, let's talk about the players for WVU
- 29:12Speaker 6: right now? How many? I mean, because you were telling
- 29:14Speaker 6: me as I went up to get you out of
- 29:16Speaker 6: the green room, you were kind of scrolling social media
- 29:18Speaker 6: and I saw on the Mountaineer Football Facebook page earlier.
- 29:21Speaker 6: I think I actually posted overnight about all these players
- 29:23Speaker 6: that have committed. They've been all committed. Where do we
- 29:25Speaker 6: stand on the players from this year's team?
- 29:28Speaker 10: You know, that's it's good news for Mountaineer fans. I
- 29:31Speaker 10: was checking my email and I'm getting press releases from
- 29:34Speaker 10: WVU from seven to fifteen this morning, all the way
- 29:37Speaker 10: up until the time that I walked in here. They're
- 29:39Speaker 10: releasing that people are signing today. It's the first college
- 29:43Speaker 10: signing day of this recruiting season today. And one of
- 29:47Speaker 10: the names that I saw on there was Zod Jackson
- 29:49Speaker 10: from Huntington, so he stuck his commitment. He is coming
- 29:53Speaker 10: to Morgantown. I think Rin Baker as well, yesterday said
- 29:57Speaker 10: that after Neil Brown's firing, dismissal, whatever, they had people
- 30:02Speaker 10: on the staff reaching out to these recruits letting them know, hey,
- 30:05Speaker 10: you're still our guy, and we still want you, and
- 30:08Speaker 10: we're solid, we're moving forward. They painted a good positive
- 30:12Speaker 10: picture and they are retaining the recruits.
- 30:14Speaker 6: It seems I'm mean, knock out a couple of texts
- 30:16Speaker 6: here before we let you get the I'm gonna let
- 30:18Speaker 6: you do a litt commercial for West Virginia's premier of
- 30:21Speaker 6: sports publication, Wiley and Whippees Texas. David ren Baker's description
- 30:25Speaker 6: of the economic scope of the WVU football coaches spot on.
- 30:28Speaker 6: I had an economics professor in college who made a
- 30:31Speaker 6: compelling argument that when WVU football or basketball wins, it
- 30:34Speaker 6: improves the economy of West Virginia by ten to twenty
- 30:38Speaker 6: percent for a couple of days following the game, and
- 30:41Speaker 6: if Marshall also wins, the financial impact is even bigger.
- 30:44Speaker 10: Yes, I agree.
- 30:45Speaker 6: Yeah, Well, speaking to Marshall, think about my guy, coach Huff.
- 30:49Speaker 6: I mean, they were ready to run him off the
- 30:51Speaker 6: rails out of town and now they're playing for the
- 30:55Speaker 6: Sun Belt Conference championship. On Saturday night, he's winning award
- 30:58Speaker 6: after award. It may be gone after the season.
- 31:01Speaker 10: Yeah, it's pretty cool. I mean, I like coach Huff.
- 31:03Speaker 10: I like Christian Spears the ad down there as much
- 31:07Speaker 10: as I do Rin Baker. I think both of our
- 31:09Speaker 10: major programs in the state are in good hands. I
- 31:13Speaker 10: don't know about Huff. I think it's concerning that they
- 31:16Speaker 10: let his contract expire, or he let it expire without
- 31:20Speaker 10: an extension. But he'll look around. I hope that he
- 31:24Speaker 10: doesn't do a side move to like a Southern Miss
- 31:29Speaker 10: something like that that's been not really a move up.
- 31:31Speaker 10: I mean, I mean it's still in the sun Belt,
- 31:33Speaker 10: except they're in the cellar. Why would you go from
- 31:35Speaker 10: the top team to the cellar for a perceived better situation.
- 31:40Speaker 10: I don't know. So I think he'll have some interest
- 31:43Speaker 10: going forward, but you're always going to and as Baker
- 31:46Speaker 10: said the other day, you want other schools to want
- 31:49Speaker 10: your coaches because you're doing well.
- 31:51Speaker 6: All right, final checks for you. It says NIL has
- 31:54Speaker 6: ruined amateur college sports. The NIL has turned universities into
- 31:57Speaker 6: the haves and have nots. No coach is worth over
- 32:00Speaker 6: thirteen million dollars, like Kirby Smart at Georgia is receiving
- 32:03Speaker 6: very sad.

- 36:36Speaker 6: I am fine? What's uh? What's new at the Capitol Market?
- 36:40Speaker 2: Oh?
- 36:40Speaker 6: We could just spend three hours talking about that, but
- 36:42Speaker 6: I know you're gearing up. As I said earlier. You know,
- 36:45Speaker 6: the Christmas season is obviously one one of, if not
- 36:48Speaker 6: the biggest times of the year for Capital Market.
- 36:51Speaker 12: So for sure's going on from you know, sourcing the
- 36:54Speaker 12: trees that we sell at the market, to providing two
- 36:59Speaker 12: hundred plus tree for Holly Jolly Braley to uh, you know,
- 37:03Speaker 12: turning our attention back in we're towards the market. The
- 37:08Speaker 12: holidays for us are a chance to, you know, every year,
- 37:12Speaker 12: bring it all together and really celebrate just the amazing growers, producers, artisans,
- 37:21Speaker 12: culinary experts.
- 37:22Speaker 3: That make the market so special.
- 37:24Speaker 12: And last year, for the first time, we put together
- 37:30Speaker 12: this holiday village concept, which was a way to kind
- 37:33Speaker 12: of bring all of those items together, and we were
- 37:37Speaker 12: just blown away by the response. And so this year
- 37:40Speaker 12: we're this Friday, we're bringing it back for the second installment.
- 37:45Speaker 12: Each weekend this year will feature live entertainment, starting Friday
- 37:50Speaker 12: with Karna It's a Salsavan Saturday carpenter ants. The following
- 37:54Speaker 12: weekend is Hot Jazz of Charleston, and then we're gonna
- 37:59Speaker 12: wrap it up with one of my favorite local bands,
- 38:01Speaker 12: of Golden and then just like last year, we'll be
- 38:04Speaker 12: rotating a curated group of artisans. It's an opportunity to
- 38:12Speaker 12: buy things that you can't get anywhere else. These are
- 38:16Speaker 12: really really great items that I have it on.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Good authority for my wife, made perfect Christmas.
- 38:24Speaker 12: So and then really just the icing on the cake
- 38:27Speaker 12: for us is just an incredible food lineup featuring all
- 38:33Speaker 12: of our vendors inside and out. We're bringing in some
- 38:36Speaker 12: friends like we always do. The thing I'm probably most
- 38:40Speaker 12: excited about this year is growing up in coastal North Carolina.
- 38:43Speaker 12: We're gonna have fresh oysters and it's a perfect time
- 38:46Speaker 12: of year for them, and I'm very, very excited.
- 38:49Speaker 6: You know, speaking of oysters. I spent a lot of
- 38:51Speaker 6: time talking about Thanksgiving food because I'm a foodie, and
- 38:54Speaker 6: I brought up with one of the guests I had
- 38:55Speaker 6: on the show that when my mother made oyster, I
- 38:57Speaker 6: made dressing, I'm sorry that you put oysters in it.
- 39:00Speaker 6: And I found that people are like, what do you
- 39:02Speaker 6: put oyster? And you know, I grew up in a
- 39:04Speaker 6: cold camp in Logan County. You know, well not exactly
- 39:06Speaker 6: the fresh seafood capital of the war whatever the guy
- 39:11Speaker 6: in dot you know, washed up on the stream. But
- 39:14Speaker 6: but yeah, that's the way, that's the way we made
- 39:16Speaker 6: them oysters. You can cook, You can do a lot
- 39:18Speaker 6: with oysters. You can put them a lot of different things,
- 39:19Speaker 6: I mean, other than just your you know, traditional eating
- 39:22Speaker 6: oysters as they are. I was on your social media
- 39:24Speaker 6: and your Facebook page and I was looking at some
- 39:26Speaker 6: of the things that you've got with this big holiday
- 39:28Speaker 6: extravaganza on Friday, some of the food, and again, for me,
- 39:30Speaker 6: it all goes back to the food. So let's talk
- 39:33Speaker 6: about the food fair that you've got there.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Yep.
- 39:36Speaker 12: So last year, as we were developing this concept on
- 39:43Speaker 12: the fly, we thought it would be a really unique
- 39:46Speaker 12: opportunity to feature items that.
- 39:50Speaker 3: The public can go and make from all of our vendors.
- 39:53Speaker 12: And one of the things that we wanted to do
- 39:57Speaker 12: was highlight how folks can use the product that we
- 40:02Speaker 12: sell at the market in ways that they may not
- 40:04Speaker 12: have thought of.
- 40:05Speaker 3: So this year we built upon that and.
- 40:10Speaker 12: I'm gonna excuse me, put Johnny's Meat Market out there
- 40:14Speaker 12: as a bright shining example. Last uh well almost two
- 40:19Speaker 12: years ago now, when the Fresh Food Company closed.
- 40:22Speaker 3: It left sort of uh seafood, fresh food.
- 40:26Speaker 12: Really unavailable within the market, and Johnny's was quick to
- 40:29Speaker 12: pick up the torch on that. And so now you
- 40:31Speaker 12: know they feature fresh MAYI trimp start shrimp and oysters,
- 40:36Speaker 12: and so it was an opportunity for us to really
- 40:38Speaker 12: highlight their new product show some folks that may not
- 40:43Speaker 12: have tried it. I'm amazed too, just in surveying our staff,
- 40:47Speaker 12: the number of folks that have never had a raw oyster.
- 40:49Speaker 3: And so I always.
- 40:51Speaker 12: Like to have the opportunity to kind of, you know,
- 40:56Speaker 12: initiate that into one of my favorite things. So and
- 41:01Speaker 12: then you know, our our friends out at Gritz Farm
- 41:03Speaker 12: out in Putnam County, they've got just a fantastic chef.
- 41:08Speaker 12: But the guy a guy named Steve Owens, and so
- 41:10Speaker 12: he's making homemade pretzels and homemade pretzels. The pictures I've
- 41:15Speaker 12: seen it. I've not tried it yet, but I'm very much.
- 41:17Speaker 6: Like I'm a sucker for I'm a sucker for anything
- 41:19Speaker 6: food related, but especially pretzels.
- 41:21Speaker 12: And and then you know, working with Venue at me
- 41:25Speaker 12: a Cupa and Ted Armbrick at the wine shop curating
- 41:27Speaker 12: some some seasonal drinks. You'll be able to get, you know,
- 41:30Speaker 12: a hot mauled cider. You can have it spiked, you
- 41:32Speaker 12: can have it not spiked. Uh, just there there, There
- 41:36Speaker 12: really is something for everyone. We've got some kids programming
- 41:39Speaker 12: from Crafts to Morgan Morrison's coming in next week to
- 41:42Speaker 12: make adult ginger bread houses. I'm very excited to see
- 41:46Speaker 12: how that turned.
- 41:46Speaker 6: Okay, I'm gonna have to have Morgan on to talk
- 41:48Speaker 6: adult ginger bread houses. We're leaving it at that, I mean, yeah, yeah,
- 41:53Speaker 6: well probably you should, but she'll kill it just like
- 41:56Speaker 6: she always does. And I and you know, the Chris
- 42:00Speaker 6: season around Charleston. I was going to get to this
- 42:03Speaker 6: a little bit later on, and certainly we'll get to
- 42:05Speaker 6: it on tomorrow show tomorrow Charleston. If you want to
- 42:08Speaker 6: get to downtown Charleston tomorrow, you might want to leave
- 42:12Speaker 6: now because we got the Transabbian Orchestra show with at
- 42:16Speaker 6: the Coddle Semen Convention Center. We have the Charleston Christmas Parade,
- 42:19Speaker 6: which is at seven o'clock tomorrow night. All these you know,
- 42:23Speaker 6: there's still even though Holly Jolly Bradley had their big
- 42:26Speaker 6: event last weekend. The trees stay up, you know, and
- 42:29Speaker 6: so that's going on. Of course I haven't even even
- 42:31Speaker 6: mentioned the light the night over, the ballpark. All these
- 42:34Speaker 6: things going on at one time. And now you add
- 42:37Speaker 6: to it with what's going on at Capitol.
- 42:39Speaker 12: Mark for sure, and it's just a fantastic time of
- 42:43Speaker 12: year in Charleston. It feels a risk ascenting cliche, very
- 42:47Speaker 12: much like a Hallmark movie. And yeah, if it doesn't
- 42:53Speaker 12: put you in the Christmas spirit, I look inward, see
- 42:56Speaker 12: why you're not. You're not you're not filled with cheer
- 43:00Speaker 12: for us in the context of you know, coming into
- 43:03Speaker 12: the end of the year, it's an opportunity not just
- 43:06Speaker 12: for us to bring all of our friends in and
- 43:08Speaker 12: really showcase what the market's all about, but it's for
- 43:12Speaker 12: us a great way to cap off what has just
- 43:14Speaker 12: been a really fantastic year for the market and from
- 43:19Speaker 12: welcoming Welcoming Bogies. We have not announced this yet. I'm
- 43:23Speaker 12: actually announcing this for the first time, but we were
- 43:26Speaker 12: just added to the National Register of Historic Places, so
- 43:28Speaker 12: we received notification from the National Park Service that is cool,
- 43:32Speaker 12: about a week ago. We will be doing a formal
- 43:35Speaker 12: announcement with that. But it's a way for us, you know,
- 43:40Speaker 12: as a five oh one C three, to preserve the
- 43:43Speaker 12: integrity of what makes the building so special.
- 43:45Speaker 6: Okay, we'll have to ask you a hold on just
- 43:46Speaker 6: one second because you have a phone call, sir. Oh, okay,
- 43:49Speaker 6: all right, Murph, if you're ready, let's go to Kim
- 43:52Speaker 6: from Charleston. You're on with Evan Osborne.
- 43:54Speaker 3: Go ahead, I Kim, good morning.
- 43:56Speaker 2: I was just calling to find how can I know when.
- 44:00Speaker 3: The flower farms guy is going.
- 44:02Speaker 12: To be at the market, so he will be open
- 44:04Speaker 12: through the end of the season, just following our normal
- 44:08Speaker 12: operating hours. His name's Adam from Mountain State Flower Farm
- 44:12Speaker 12: and he's generally there most days from ten am to
- 44:14Speaker 12: six pm most nights this time of year, even longer
- 44:17Speaker 12: if he's got a workshop going on.
- 44:20Speaker 6: Okay, all right, thank.
- 44:21Speaker 3: You, You're very welcome.
- 44:23Speaker 12: And for folks that don't know, Adam is a flower
- 44:26Speaker 12: grower throughout the warmer parts of the year and a
- 44:30Speaker 12: couple of years ago, I believe this is the third
- 44:31Speaker 12: year now we've built a pop up Christmas shop. So
- 44:34Speaker 12: if you see this giant structure under the outdoor market,
- 44:37Speaker 12: that's actually a greenhouse and so it's a way for
- 44:40Speaker 12: him to kind of set up shop and do what
- 44:43Speaker 12: he does throughout the holiday season. And if you haven't
- 44:45Speaker 12: seen his stuff, he makes really great live reese featuring
- 44:49Speaker 12: magnolia fresh pine. He's got a little something for everyone.
- 44:52Speaker 6: All right, can we appreciate you calling Evan. We're gonna
- 44:54Speaker 6: have to wrap it up here, but give us the particulars.
- 44:57Speaker 12: On Friday, absolutely, holiday village starts six pm, goes to
- 45:01Speaker 12: a nine pm. We do it again Saturday night. Each
- 45:04Speaker 12: each weekend's totally different. So if you went once, come
