- 0:10[SPEAKER_04]: Hello and welcome to my first dungeon, a very special episode of my first dungeon because
- 0:24[SPEAKER_04]: Today we're gonna be playing my latest game, the time we have a conversation between brothers.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_04]: This is a tragic two players on-be game that is on-backer kit right now.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_04]: So go ahead, stop this episode, go back it, and then you can come back and listen.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_04]: You should go back it, you should go back it.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_02]: Right now, this is my livelihood.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_02]: I promise you, like genuinely, Elliott is a talented game designer and you will not regret backing it.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be a game you will play a lot.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_04]: Alright, with that, Shen, have you ready to get into it?
- 1:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, man, fuck me up with your game.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_04]: Alright, we're gonna start with the rules.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_04]: One, go back and forth reading these cards aloud.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_02]: Two, if you're reading this, it is already too late.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_02]: The world ended and with that end came an infection that spelled at the end of humanity.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_04]: 3.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_04]: You are brothers.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_04]: One of you has been infected.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_04]: In six days or less you will change.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_04]: Answer the following.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_04]: Which of you is older?
- 1:50[SPEAKER_04]: Which of you has been infected?
- 1:52[SPEAKER_04]: So we chatted a bit off Mike.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_04]: I am going to be infected.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_04]: Would you like to be older or younger?
- 1:59[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to be younger.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to be younger. 4.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_02]: Distribute all infected cards to the infected brother and all survivor cards to the other.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_02]: Make sure each of you has a safety card.
- 2:13[UNKNOWN]: 5.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_04]: Find a door.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_04]: Sit on opposite sides with the door closed and read your individual rules cards back and forth in numbered order.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_04]: Once the door is closed, the game has begun.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_04]: If you open the door at any point during play, the game is over.
- 2:30[UNKNOWN]: 6.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_02]: This is a game about brothers.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_02]: I am the survivor.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_04]: 7.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_04]: This is a game about brothers, I am the infected, in six days I will be gone.
- 2:42[UNKNOWN]: 8.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_02]: We will now shuffle our prompt cards and put them in a face-down deck in front of each of us.
- 2:49[UNKNOWN]: 9.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_04]: I will do the same with the exception of the card which reads, do you open the door.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_04]: I will find and place this card randomly in the bottom half of my pile.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_04]: For a shorter game I will place this card about halfway down the pile.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_02]: 10.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_02]: We will take turns beginning with the survivor, drawing cards and responding to the prompts.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_02]: Most cards are questions to be read aloud.
- 3:13[UNKNOWN]: 11.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_04]: Some cards will say pass at the top.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_04]: These will be slid under the door and read silently.
- 3:18[UNKNOWN]: 12.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_02]: For both types of prompt cards, we can ask follow-up questions and speak both in and out of character.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_02]: We will let the conversation flow until a natural pause, then draw a new card.
- 3:31[UNKNOWN]: 13.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_04]: I have one other type of prompt card, infection cards.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_04]: There are five of these within my deck.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_04]: These tell me how my infection is progressing and signal the end of one of the six days.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_04]: I will let you know that the day is over and we will pause play for 30 seconds.
- 3:47[UNKNOWN]: 14.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_02]: At any point throughout play, either of us can make use of the rules on the safety card to pause, adjust, or end play.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_04]: 15.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_04]: If we open the door at any point throughout play, the game is over.
- 4:02[UNKNOWN]: 16.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: With that, we begin with my first question.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: Why did you wait to tell me?
- 4:22[SPEAKER_04]: Not your job to worry about me.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_02]: It's not my job, it's always been my job.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_04]: No, I'm the older brother.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_04]: I'm supposed to look after you.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_04]: You don't have to look after me.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I know you're the older brother.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's... Why didn't you tell me sooner?
- 4:46[SPEAKER_04]: I wanted to believe that it wasn't what I thought it was.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_04]: I thought it was just a scraper, but now it's definitely a bite.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, okay, Joshua, like, you, why do you always do this?
- 5:09[SPEAKER_02]: Do what?
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: You like, pretend like you have, you know what's under control and you have everything put together, but you always need help.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_02]: You always need my help.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_02]: That's always been true.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_02]: That's not fair.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, sure.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_04]: Not fair.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_04]: Let's just drop it.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_02]: Where were we going next?
- 5:43[SPEAKER_04]: I still think you should try and go to Boston.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_04]: I know that radio transmission was from a while ago, but I think it's still probably the best bet.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: What am I supposed to do?
- 5:57[SPEAKER_02]: One of us to tell our sister I don't tell her what happened teller that I couldn't that I didn't make it Nick he's not gonna like that Nick he's gonna be so mad at me Nick you'll be fine You yeah, you think your twin sisters gonna be fine with you not being around anymore?
- 6:22[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know
- 6:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'll go to Boston, but I don't know, I... I can't... This is bullshit.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_02]: What's so funny?
- 6:48[SPEAKER_04]: It's just... this... I never thought...
- 6:57[SPEAKER_04]: I never thought we'd really end up in this sort of situation, you know, you know, we watched all the movies and played hours and zombies, like, it just doesn't feel real sometimes.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, remember when I was a kid and I'd always want to play Call of Duty with you and I was so young and mom forced to force you to let me play.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_02]: You would give me an Entendo 64 controller and... Oh, you knew that, you knew that's what we were doing?
- 7:31[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, as it... as... Yeah, I mean, I knew it wasn't the controllers you guys used.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_02]: I was just happy to be included.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_02]: It was... I just like being around you back then.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_04]: We should just let you play.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_04]: We took it too seriously.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_04]: Mickey, especially.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's why she's so good at killing them now.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_02]: She's the only one that saw this coming.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_02]: You think her radio transition was real?
- 8:05[SPEAKER_04]: I think, uh, if anybody figured it out, I think she did.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe she has a cure.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's, that's a nice thought.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you're right.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_02]: I was always dreaming too big anyway.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_02]: We had a pet that was just the worst.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_02]: Why do you blame me for its death?
- 8:43[SPEAKER_04]: When Mom brought home that awful cat?
- 8:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's me with a little freak.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_02]: You called it little freak.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_02]: It's me with a little freak.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_04]: No, it's me with snowball.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: Still don't think it's right that you let it out.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_02]: It wanted to go out.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_02]: With clawing at the door.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_02]: Plus, no one was taking care of it in any way.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_02]: You never cleaned a litter box.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't want to cat.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_04]: Neither did I. I hope it maybe, maybe, maybe he's still out there.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe he made it.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: That.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_01]: That.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's... it's gone.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: We'll never see it again.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_02]: You know, just... put it on the list of things Mom told you to take care of that I had to end up... doing... Oh, fuck off.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_02]: Fuck you.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_02]: Whatever.
- 9:55[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_02]: Whatever.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_04]: Well, family member, are we a little glad we don't have to see again?
- 10:12[SPEAKER_02]: You know what would make this worse?
- 10:29[SPEAKER_04]: I've been through this room.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_02]: Man, she was the worst.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_02]: She was the absolute worst.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_02]: and like just racist just racist just openly racist openly racist and she was the only white one in our family yeah i mean
- 10:47[SPEAKER_04]: Mom was always nice to her because she trusted her brother's judgment or whatever uncle Tommy man.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_02]: Remember when Remember when she she we got Buckleva that one like mom made Buckleva, and she was like this is too spicy So it was too spicy for her.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_02]: We would have to make like every time we like she would come over dinner We have to make two dishes one with flavor and one right there.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_04]: We like Buckleva just
- 11:17[SPEAKER_02]: high fructose corn syrup that was Aunt Susan yeah man she also was like crazy about like what it was like homemade remedies she probably be like putting like salt on beeswax and making you put it on your foot she always thought that like if you just fixed your diet you wouldn't be depressed yeah didn't fully did not believe in therapy
- 11:44[SPEAKER_04]: Well, maybe she'd have a remedy for this, I don't know.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe she's up there helping Nikki and Boston.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I wouldn't that be a trope.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_02]: The day everything went bad.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: A happy event brought us together.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_02]: While it was just the first time we had seen each other in a while.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_04]: I think it was Nikki's graduation.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, from our PhD.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_04]: If anybody's got to figure out Nicky does, you know.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_04]: You remember all those accolades she got at graduation?
- 12:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_04]: She was... Looks like she was weighed down with all those scars.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, head over class at MIT.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_02]: She was, she was the real favorite between the three of us.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_02]: And then there was me and you.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_04]: I guess I am glad that I decided to go to a graduation.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know where I'd be right now.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_04]: Oh.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_04]: I guess I'd probably be similar to where I am right now.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_02]: I, well, where were you all those years?
- 13:15[SPEAKER_04]: I, um, went down the couch for a while.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_04]: rented a really cheap house and i don't know did odd jobs and he said you were down in New Orleans yeah is all right i am you know probably did more drugs than i should have but yeah you missed a lot of my life yeah
- 13:58[SPEAKER_02]: It would have been nice to have a brother, you know?
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: It would have been nice to see you.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_02]: What have been, whatever, man?
- 14:09[SPEAKER_02]: Of, glad you're back.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_04]: I know I didn't get to, I didn't get to see a lot, but I remember Nicky saying that you, uh, you were into theater.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was a lead for three years from sophomore year to senior year.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_02]: Lessie, was really into acting and musical theater I was a Peter Pan and almost heartbroken when you left though.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_02]: Every time she'd come to my place, she would say, Joshua would've been really proud.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_02]: She always said, you always wanted to be an actor.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I guess I did once upon a time, but I don't know.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_04]: Sometimes reality has other ideas.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_02]: I took care of all your stuff and yeah.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_02]: Your room still the way it was, and no one's touched it.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_02]: No one's really allowed it, and mom wouldn't let anyone.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_02]: I still had to... I still lived in the annex in the basement.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: Hmm.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_02]: She said, no, no.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_02]: Can't take Josh was room.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: He's coming back soon.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_04]: I should have called at least.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you should have.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_02]: We missed you.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_02]: We missed you a lot.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_04]: I missed you, too.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_04]: I missed all of you.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_02]: What's a dream you never shaked with me from before?
- 16:50[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I always wanted to be a dad.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
- 16:55[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I...
- 17:00[SPEAKER_02]: What you'd be a terrible dad.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_04]: I'd be a horrible dad.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_04]: I'd be a horrible dad, but I wanted to.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_04]: I wanted to I don't know give Give a kid a better life I don't know I Had every chance to have a good life, but I Still wanted to.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_04]: I thought maybe I would
- 17:31[SPEAKER_02]: Why do you talk like it's like it's what I mean I'll be dead in day no Joshua I obviously I know you're gonna be dead.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's just you could have been a good brother, you know?
- 17:48[SPEAKER_02]: Like I missed you so much I get it, okay?
- 17:55[SPEAKER_03]: To be a good brother to you, I would have had to be a half decent person to myself and I never could figure out how to be that.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_02]: So you left me with Mom?
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: To take care of her?
- 18:11[SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't do it.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_02]: So you let your 13-year-old brother take care of his sick mom?
- 18:21[SPEAKER_04]: Good, Nikki.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, she'd come on the weekends when she had time during college but she wasn't there for the hard shit.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_02]: When Mom couldn't walk, when Mom would scream at night and pain.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_02]: When I had to help Mom use the bathroom, wipe her ass, I was 13.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_02]: I was 13 and I wanted my older brother.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: And now you're gonna leave me again?
- 18:44[SPEAKER_00]: I just got you back!
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's not fair, it's not fair, you don't get to just leave and then come back and then show and leave again forever, it's not fair.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm the one that has to tell everyone, I'm the one that has to watch it happen to you.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_03]: You can go anytime.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_04]: I know I never apologized.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_04]: I'm sorry, I'm sorry that I left and you don't have to forgive me, but I would really like if you did, you just, I don't know, you understand why that's so hard to hear right now.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I do.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_04]: I just
- 20:08[SPEAKER_04]: To be honest with you, Jay, I don't know how much time I've got left, and I just maybe I'm asking for a favor, maybe I maybe you don't need to mean it.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: I... I don't know what to say.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_02]: There's a game we play to keep saying, how will I play it alone?
- 21:06[SPEAKER_04]: I think maybe we could play around a go-fish.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, we can play a go-fish.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_02]: I'll slide the cards under the door.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I got my deck here.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_02]: Wait, do you use two decks and go-fish?
- 21:21[SPEAKER_04]: I just keep a deck on me, and I figured that's easier than... That way, you don't have to... I don't know how contagious this is, sir.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_02]: You're gonna bite me through the door.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_04]: Thinking about it?
- 21:35[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_02]: I have to trust you from the other side that you don't have 3s in the 4s in the whatnot.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you got to trust me.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_04]: What argument have we kept having since the end?
- 22:01[SPEAKER_02]: I think whether to go to Boston or to go down south.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_02]: Which of us feels which way?
- 22:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think you want to go up to Boston, but I was saying we should go south, because I don't, I don't think it's, yeah.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think down south is like the one that will break the infections and there's less infected down there.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_04]: Do you have any twos?
- 22:33[SPEAKER_01]: Go fish.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_04]: So you're going to Boston, right?
- 22:39[SPEAKER_04]: Right?
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: I, yeah.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, man.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_02]: If Nicky's there, you have to go.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but Nicky's transition came back.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_02]: It was like what a month ago now.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_02]: We've heard nothing since.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_04]: I'm just telling you, I don't think the South is where you want to go, man.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, kind of people I met when I was down there are going to turn into the kind of people you don't want to run into post-society.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god, they're a bad people everywhere, Josh.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_02]: And there's, if there's no one, if Nikki's not in Boston, what do I do?
- 23:20[SPEAKER_02]: Where do I go?
- 23:20[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know anyone else.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_04]: I just think Nicky's the best bet.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_04]: I'd, you bet on me this long, bet on Nicky.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_04]: I'll think about it.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_02]: What does it feel like?
- 23:46[SPEAKER_04]: Feel cold.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_04]: Feels like my arm is hardening into ice.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_02]: That's where you got bed?
- 23:56[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_02]: You banded it up?
- 23:59[SPEAKER_04]: I did, but there's some kind of growth pushing through the bandages and it's just so cold.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_02]: Damn.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry.
- 24:13[UNKNOWN]: Okay.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_04]: What's the nicest thing about the apocalypse, you think?
- 24:27[SPEAKER_02]: I don't gotta worry about my financial future.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_04]: Did you have a 401k in all that?
- 24:37[SPEAKER_04]: No, I was an actor.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_04]: Did you?
- 24:42[SPEAKER_04]: Did you?
- 24:43[SPEAKER_04]: Hell no.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_04]: I had all my money in cash.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_02]: That's... I'm sorry.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_02]: Actually, that's the most traumatic thing I've heard in my life.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_02]: I think Mom's still, uh, she kept her saving as account for you.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_04]: She had never enough money to be doing all that?
- 25:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_02]: She.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_02]: She didn't, but after three kids, you had the savings account.

- 42:54[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_04]: I'm glad Nicky wasn't at the hospital.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_04]: No, she would have.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_02]: As she would have freaked out or on the knob, she could have handled it.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I'm happy you were there, too.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what I would have done to have seen that alone.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_04]: The beginning of the end.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_02]: The beginning of the end.
