- 1:29great episode of the ever-popular Inspirations for
- 1:32Your Life show.
- 1:34I'm your host, John C.
- 1:36Morley.
- 1:37I'm a serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video
- 1:40producer, podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student
- 1:46at Montclair State University, a passionate lifelong learner,
- 1:49and so grateful now to be a published
- 1:51author.
- 1:52Our weekly master topic, friends, is Your Actions
- 1:56Are Telling the Truth About You.
- 1:58This is season five, and this is, yes,
- 2:02I can't believe that we are all the
- 2:05way, and this is show number 40.
- 2:09That is where we're at, and it is
- 2:12episode number one.
- 2:13I'll get into what that is in a
- 2:15second.
- 2:16Today's episode is Intentions Don't Count If You
- 2:19Never Act.
- 2:21Intentions matter, ladies and gentlemen, because they give
- 2:23us direction in life, but intentions alone don't
- 2:25create results.
- 2:26At some point, we have to move from
- 2:29thinking, planning, and talking into actually doing.
- 2:33Today, I'm closing that gap with 30 powerful
- 2:36points I hope that will put you on
- 2:38the road to understanding and victory.
- 2:40So let's get started, all right?
- 2:42Number one, good intentions don't automatically create good
- 2:45results.
- 2:46You can genuinely want something positive, but wanting
- 2:50it doesn't make it happen.
- 2:53Results require movement.
- 2:54Intention points you toward the destination.
- 2:57Action starts getting you there.
- 3:00So it doesn't happen one, two, three, right?
- 3:03But it can happen with some practice.
- 3:06I think that's an important thing for a
- 3:09lot of us to understand that it does
- 3:12take a little bit of practice, right?
- 3:14Number two, saying you'll do something isn't the
- 3:17same as actually doing it.
- 3:18We've all said, I'll get to that later
- 3:21tomorrow.
- 3:23But saying something can give us a false
- 3:26feeling of accomplishment.
- 3:28Your words describe the commitment.
- 3:29Your actions, they're the ones that actually fulfill
- 3:32it, or they write the ticket on that.
- 3:35So I think that's an important thing for
- 3:36us to definitely be aware of in life.
- 3:41Number three, your calendar reveals what you're actually
- 3:43prioritizing.
- 3:44Look at where your time really goes.
- 3:47Your calendar often gives you a more accurate
- 3:49picture of your priorities than your intention do.
- 3:53Important things need space in your life.
- 3:56Number four, stop giving yourself credit for plans
- 4:00you haven't started.
- 4:02Planning can feel productive, but don't confuse deciding
- 4:06with doing.
- 4:07Give yourself credit when you take a meaningful
- 4:11step forward.
- 4:13I think that's an important thing.
- 4:14And a lot of people, they don't give
- 4:16themselves credit.
- 4:17Why?
- 4:20I think it's because they're aiming for perfection.
- 4:23I think that can be a very big
- 4:26problem.
- 4:27Number five, an idea without action remains just
- 4:31an idea.
- 4:32You can have incredible ideas, but nobody benefits
- 4:35if it never leaves your mind.
- 4:37Write something, build something, make the call, give
- 4:41your idea a chance to get some legs
- 4:43and become real in life.
- 4:46And let it impact not just yourself, but
- 4:48other people.
- 4:48I think that's pretty cool when you can
- 4:50do stuff like that.
- 4:51So definitely do that.
- 4:53Number six, your intentions cannot do the work
- 4:56for you.
- 4:57Your intentions are good, but your intentions can't
- 4:59make the call, complete the assignment, have the
- 5:01conversation, or finish the project.
- 5:03Eventually, you have to participate in producing the
- 5:06actual outcome.
- 5:08Number seven, starting imperfectly beats planning endlessly.
- 5:12Your first attempt probably won't be perfect.
- 5:15And that's OK.
- 5:16You can impose something you've started.
- 5:18You can improve something that doesn't exist.
- 5:22Number eight, stop confusing preparation with progress.
- 5:26Preparation is valuable until it becomes a hiding
- 5:28place.
- 5:29I know.
- 5:30When I was starting to write my book,
- 5:31I was procrastinating for quite a few weeks.
- 5:34I said, OK, enough's enough.
- 5:35I need to start writing the book now.
- 5:37Research planning and organizing should eventually lead to
- 5:40execution, but not more delayed action.
- 5:45Ask yourself, am I preparing to move or
- 5:48preparing so I don't have to move?
- 5:50I think a lot of people will keep
- 5:52doing something over and over again.
- 5:53And sometimes they'll purposely not finish something.
- 5:56You know why?
- 5:56Because they don't want to get started.
- 6:00And getting started can seem challenging for a
- 6:04lot of people.
- 6:06But I can tell you that it's the
- 6:08key.
- 6:09I know it sounds scary, guys.
- 6:11It definitely is scary, but it's necessary.
- 6:14And we have to practice getting comfortable being
- 6:16uncomfortable.
- 6:17Number nine, the smallest action can break procrastination.
- 6:21Make the first step smaller.
- 6:24Open the document.
- 6:26Write the first paragraph.
- 6:30You know, I think these are all important
- 6:32things for us to understand.
- 6:35Send the email.
- 6:36Walk for 10 minutes.
- 6:39Small movements can create powerful momentum.
- 6:41They get us to feel good, but they
- 6:43make us want to do more stuff.
- 6:47I think that's an important thing for us
- 6:49to actually think about.
- 6:52That they want to get us to do
- 6:53more stuff.
- 6:55Number 10, your habits reveal more than your
- 6:58promises ever will.
- 7:00Promises tell us what you intend to do.
- 7:02Habits reveal what you repeatedly do.
- 7:05If your habits consistently contradict your goals, something
- 7:08has to change.
- 7:09Or you're going to be doing like Einstein
- 7:11said, insanity.
- 7:13Doing the same thing over and over again,
- 7:14expecting different results.
- 7:15That's insanity.
- 7:17Number 11, what you repeatedly do becomes your
- 7:21real standard.
- 7:22See, your standard isn't only what you say
- 7:25you expect.
- 7:28It's also what you repeatedly accept from yourself.
- 7:32Repeated behavior eventually becomes normal behavior.
- 7:34Stop waiting to feel completely ready.
- 7:38Sometimes readiness comes after starting.
- 7:41You don't need every answer before taking the
- 7:43first responsible step.
- 7:45You can learn while moving forward.
- 7:48Number 13, action creates information planning cannot ever
- 7:54provide.
- 7:55Number 13, you can research and predict, but
- 7:59action gives you real feedback.
- 8:02Once you begin, you discover what works, what
- 8:05doesn't, and what needs to change in your
- 8:08life.
- 8:08I think that's a real key.
- 8:10Number 14, you learn more after starting.
- 8:14Experience teaches lessons theory can't always provide.
- 8:19Starting exposes questions you didn't know you need
- 8:23to ask.
- 8:24That's part of growth, guys.
- 8:27Number 15, make today's behavior match tomorrow's goal.
- 8:33I think that's another important one that a
- 8:35lot of people, you know, that they miss
- 8:37that concept.
- 8:39They miss like what that even means.
- 8:42Ask yourself, what can I do today that
- 8:48supports where I want to be tomorrow?
- 8:50Your future is influenced by ordinary decisions repeated
- 8:54consistently.
- 8:56You might say, well, gee, what is that
- 8:57little thing going to do for me?
- 8:59It's going to be one step to get
- 9:00you closer, okay?
- 9:03I think that's an important thing that, I
- 9:12think the most important thing for you to
- 9:14realize is that you have to take these
- 9:16steps, okay?
- 9:18You have to take them.
- 9:19If you don't take them, you're never going
- 9:20to go anywhere.
- 9:21You're just going to be like constantly going
- 9:24nowhere and going in circles, all right?
- 9:28Just the truth.
- 9:37Think about that for a minute.
- 9:39What does that mean to you?
- 9:45Have you thought about it that way?
- 9:51I mean, have you really thought about it
- 9:53or no?
- 9:56Right?
- 9:57That's the real question I want to ask.
- 10:03And if you haven't thought about it, why
- 10:06not?
- 10:08Why not think about it?
- 10:10Number 16, stop announcing everything you're going to
- 10:13do.
- 10:14I've learned this a long time ago.
- 10:16You don't need to impress anybody, okay?
- 10:20What you need to do is basically do
- 10:25it.
- 10:26Not put a show on that you're going
- 10:27to do it.
- 10:28Just do it.
- 10:29You don't need to tell everyone, their mother,
- 10:32their brother, and their relatives your plan.
- 10:36Sometimes talking about the goal gives us satisfaction
- 10:39before we've actually earned it.
- 10:42Save some energy for the execution.
- 10:45But again, when you do something, your mind
- 10:50and body see that, hey, you do what
- 10:51you say you're going to do.
- 10:52That's important.
- 10:56And that's a big key, guys.
- 10:59A key for us to understand, all right?
- 11:03A key that maybe people don't understand right
- 11:06away.
- 11:13That's important, guys.
- 11:15A very important thing that most people don't
- 11:18really understand.
- 11:25And I think that means something for a
- 11:27lot of people.
- 11:27But then a lot of people don't think
- 11:29about that, right?
- 11:30They don't think about what that's going to
- 11:31mean or, you know, what that's going to
- 11:33do for them.
- 11:38And I think that can cause, I'm going
- 11:40to say challenges for people.
- 11:49And you might say to me, John, you
- 11:50know, I don't really know where that's going.
- 11:55Where is it really going?
- 11:58Where?
- 12:04Could confuse you, right?
- 12:08So stop waiting to feel completely ready, number
- 12:1012.
- 12:11Sometimes readiness comes after starting.
- 12:13You don't need every answer before taking the
- 12:16first responsible step.
- 12:17You can learn while you're moving forward.
- 12:19Number 13, action creates information.
- 12:21Planning cannot provide.
- 12:23As I said, you can research and predict.
- 12:25But action gives you real feedback.
- 12:27Once you begin, you discover what works, what
- 12:32doesn't, and what needs to change.
- 12:34Number 14, you learn more after starting.
- 12:37Experience teaches lessons.
- 12:39Theory can't always provide.
- 12:42Starting exposes questions you didn't know you needed
- 12:44to ask.
- 12:45That's part of growth.
- 12:47Number 15, make today's behavior match tomorrow's goals.
- 12:50And ask yourself, what can I do today
- 12:52that supports where I want to be tomorrow?
- 12:56Think about that.
- 13:0016 is stop announcing everything that you're going
- 13:04to do.
- 13:05Just do it.
- 13:07Number 17, let the completed work speak for
- 13:09you.
- 13:10Instead of explaining 24-7, just do it.
- 13:14Number 18, excitement at the beginning is a
- 13:17commitment, guys.
- 13:18New things are exciting.
- 13:20Commitment becomes visible when the novelty disappears.
- 13:23What happens after the excitement fades tells you
- 13:26how serious you really are.
- 13:29Number 19, motivation can disappear while responsibility remains.
- 13:34You're not going to feel motivated every day.
- 13:37But responsibilities don't disappear because our feelings changed.
- 13:42That's about discipline, right?
- 13:45Discipline.
- 13:46Discipline is something a lot of people spend
- 13:49hours to figure out.
- 13:51Days, months, even years.
- 13:53But then you know what happens?
- 13:54They actually don't get any further.
- 13:56And it's because of their belief system.
- 14:00That's the reason.
- 14:02So do what matters even when the feeling
- 14:05changes.
- 14:05Number 20, our feelings will fluctuate.
- 14:08Purposes give us something steadier to return to,
- 14:11to be grounded upon.
- 14:13Remember why something mattered when you committed to
- 14:16it.
- 14:17Take the next responsible steps.
- 14:19Number 21, your future is influenced by what
- 14:21you repeatedly practice.
- 14:23What are you practicing every day?
- 14:25Focusing on discipline, avoidance, learning, procrastination.
- 14:28Every repetition strengthens something.
- 14:32Choose carefully what you're strengthening.
- 14:35But you may be strengthening something you don't
- 14:36want to strengthen.
- 14:38Like AKA procrastination, right?
- 14:42Nobody does that.
- 14:45Number 22, small actions become evidence that you're
- 14:49serious.
- 14:50Doesn't have to be a grandiose thing.
- 14:53You don't need a giant accomplishment every day.
- 14:57A small, complete action says I showed up.
- 14:59I moved forward.
- 15:01I kept my commitment.
- 15:02Those actions accumulate over time.
- 15:08Pretty special, isn't it?
- 15:12Over time.
- 15:14I think that's something that a lot of
- 15:16people, like they just don't get it.
- 15:25Something to think about.
- 15:32But you can and you should.
- 15:37Number 23, stop negotiating with commitments you already
- 15:41made with yourself.
- 15:42Have you ever decided to do something and
- 15:44then spend an hour convincing yourself?
- 15:46Yeah, I'm not going to do that.
- 15:49If the commitment still matters to you, stop
- 15:52reopening the decision every few minutes.
- 15:54Like why are you trying to talk yourself
- 15:57out of something that actually could help you?
- 16:00Like that's really the question that I want
- 16:04to know.
- 16:05Number 24, give important goals a place on
- 16:10your schedule.
- 16:12Okay, if something really matters, make room for
- 16:17it.
- 16:18You may need to adjust your schedule.
- 16:20But putting the work on your calendar makes
- 16:22your intention tangible.
- 16:25A commitment you're going to go forth on.
- 16:28Okay.
- 16:31Number 25, please remove one excuse you repeatedly
- 16:36use.
- 16:37It usually starts with I'm not, I'm not,
- 16:39I'm not.
- 16:40I don't want to hear the rest of
- 16:41it.
- 16:42Change it to I am.
- 16:44Real obstacles exist, guys.
- 16:46And we shouldn't pretend otherwise.
- 16:49But we also recognize the excuses that we
- 16:52recycle over and over.
- 16:53I'm not that, I'm not this, I'm not
- 16:54that.
- 16:54You just stop that.
- 16:56And then it becomes like an autopilot, right?
- 16:57Identify one and ask what action would make
- 17:01that excuse less powerful.
- 17:03That's the most important thing that I can
- 17:05tell you.
- 17:08Number 26, turn one intention into a measurable
- 17:13action today.
- 17:15Whoa, that's a real interesting thought.
- 17:20When we get measurable actions, it's like we
- 17:23want to do more in our life.
- 17:26Okay, we want to do more in our
- 17:28life.
- 17:31So turn the one action into a measurable
- 17:34action today.
- 17:3526, don't say I'm going to work on
- 17:39my book.
- 17:42Say I'm going to write 500 words.
- 17:46Don't say I need to work.
- 17:48You're going to connect with three new people.
- 17:51Measurement turns the vague tension to action.
- 17:54Studying.
- 17:56Don't say I'm just going to study.
- 17:58I'm going to study at least one of
- 18:02my chapters.
- 18:03Either my slides or my in-class notes.
- 18:08That's what you do.
- 18:10Number 27, don't wait for perfect conditions.
- 18:12They're never going to exist.
- 18:14Perfect conditions rarely arrive.
- 18:17There will always be another reason to wait.
- 18:19Determine what you generally need now.
- 18:22Use what you currently have and begin.
- 18:24Okay, I want to learn how to cook.
- 18:26I cook or I bake.
- 18:28Okay, no, I want to, I'm going to
- 18:31make a cake or I'm going to make
- 18:33cookies, right?
- 18:35My first story, that's how I did it.
- 18:38Maybe, you know, I'm working on something for
- 18:40my not-for-profit.
- 18:41Not, I think I'm going to create a
- 18:43video.
- 18:44That's wonderful.
- 18:45I'm going to create a video that gets
- 18:48engagement.
- 18:50That's how it works.
- 18:52That's how it works, guys.
- 18:54You create engagement.
- 18:56Recently, you guys know I've been doing a
- 18:57day in the life with John.
- 18:58I've been realizing that it's been great, but
- 19:00I need to make it more engaging.
- 19:01So, I decided I need to make it
- 19:03more punchier.
- 19:05In a sense, I've got to put more
- 19:07hooks when I start.
- 19:09I don't start anymore like, hey, it's John
- 19:11C.
- 19:11Morley.
- 19:11It's a day in life.
- 19:12I don't do it anymore.
- 19:12I get right into the point.
- 19:14And then a lot of times I'll just
- 19:15stop and then I'll get to the next
- 19:16point.
- 19:17I'll say, we'll cover that later.
- 19:19Number 27, don't you dare wait for perfect
- 19:22conditions.
- 19:22Perfect conditions, I said, they rarely arrive.
- 19:24So, don't wait for them, okay?
- 19:27Determine it now.
- 19:28I want to make sure that's clear to
- 19:29you.
- 19:29Number 28, consistency gives intentions credibility.
- 19:34Anybody can make a declaration once, right?
- 19:37Consistency creates evidence.
- 19:40When your actions repeatedly support your intentions, people,
- 19:44including you, can begin trusting those intentions.
- 19:47I think when we start to trust ourselves,
- 19:50guess what?
- 19:51Other people start to trust us too.
- 19:56Hmm, pretty interesting.
- 20:01Trust yourself, others will trust you too.
- 20:04Number 29, become someone whose actions support their
- 20:09words.
- 20:10This goes beyond just productivity.
- 20:13It's about getting yourself in alignment.
- 20:17When you say something matters, your behavior should
- 20:19increasingly demonstrate that it matters.
- 20:22If you just say, gee, I'm going to
- 20:24say it matters, but you don't do anything,
- 20:25what's the point of saying it matters?
- 20:28Number 30, guys.
- 20:30If it matters enough to say, make it
- 20:33matter enough to do.
- 20:34Let me say that again.
- 20:35If it matters enough to say, make it
- 20:38a matter enough to do.
- 20:40If it matters enough to say, make it
- 20:41a matter enough to do.
- 20:43And that's where I would like to leave
- 20:46you today.
- 20:48Think about one thing you've been talking about
- 20:52doing.
- 20:53Maybe you've talked about it for a week,
- 20:56months.
- 20:57Or maybe even several years.
- 21:00First of all, what is that?
- 21:02Is it exercise?
- 21:04Is it eating differently?
- 21:06Is it getting an education in some topic
- 21:10or area?
- 21:12Is it, you know, connecting with your neighbors,
- 21:17building some friendships, a relationship?
- 21:21What is it?
- 21:24Maybe it's a financial goal.
- 21:26What is it?
- 21:27You can't just say, I want to make
- 21:30money.
- 21:30That's nice.
- 21:32You could say, I want to have an
- 21:35abundant amount of money.
- 21:36But think about what you're going to do
- 21:38with the money, not just you're going to
- 21:39have it.
- 21:40And what's one action you could take today
- 21:44or tomorrow, depending on when you're watching this.
- 21:47Not someday, today.
- 21:50I'll let you say tomorrow, because I get
- 21:52it might be nighttime when you're watching it.
- 21:53But at least you're going to take it
- 21:55either tonight or tomorrow.
- 21:57Because intention can identify your destination, but they
- 22:02can't walk the road for you.
- 22:04This week is about closing the distance between
- 22:06what we say and what we actually do.
- 22:09We're going to examine changing our minds, the
- 22:12promises we make to ourselves, ego, success, integrity,
- 22:18when nobody is watching.
- 22:20And ultimately, how we create a life where
- 22:23our actions match the person we say we
- 22:26want to become.
- 22:27So here's your challenge, ladies and gentlemen.
- 22:30Choose one intention that's been sitting in your
- 22:33mind.
- 22:34Give it an action.
- 22:35Give that action a measurement.
- 22:38Give it a place on your calendar.
- 22:41Then do it.
- 22:43You don't have to transform your entire life
- 22:46today.
- 22:47Take one meaningful step and prove to yourself
- 22:50that this intention deserves more than words.
- 22:52Your actions are creating evidence about what matters
- 22:56to you.
- 22:57Make sure that evidence tells the story you
- 22:59actually want your life.
- 23:03I think that's an important thing for us
- 23:06to realize.
- 23:07You might say, John, this sounds great.
- 23:08I'll get to it next week.
- 23:10No, because you're never going to do it,
- 23:12right?
- 23:13You might say, well, I don't know how
- 23:13to do that.
- 23:16Find a way that you can measure it.
- 23:20Maybe it's losing weight.
- 23:23You can measure your weight, right?
- 23:25Maybe it's health.
- 23:27You can measure how you feel.
- 23:28Right?
- 23:30Ladies and gentlemen, if you don't know who
- 23:31I am by now, I am John C.
- 23:33Morley.
- 23:34I'm a serial entrepreneur, engineer, author, and so
- 23:36much more.
- 23:36And this has been another amazing episode of
- 23:40the ever-popular Inspirations for Your Life show.
- 23:44I take this moment to thank you so
- 23:47very much for joining me.
- 23:48Remember, ladies and gentlemen, your intentions may tell
- 23:52the world what you hope to accomplish.
- 23:55Your intentions may tell the world or share
- 23:59with the world what you hope to accomplish.
- 24:03But, here's the but, your actions are what
- 24:07begin turning those hopes into something real.
- 24:11Let me see if I can make this
- 24:12a little easier.
- 24:14Let's take cooking, right?
- 24:16I like cooking.
- 24:18So we'll do something with popcorn.
- 24:24So your intentions are to put the popcorn
- 24:28into the air popper, okay?
- 24:32But it's never going to pop unless you
- 24:34turn it on, right?
- 24:36So you could think about becoming successful, but
- 24:39if you don't take a step, a baby
- 24:41step, it doesn't have to be a big
- 24:42step.
- 24:44You're not going anywhere.
- 24:46So remember, your intentions may tell the world
- 24:49what you hope to accomplish.
- 24:51But your actions are the key to what
- 24:54begins turning those hopes into something real.
- 24:57Think of it another way.
- 24:58You can get in your car and you
- 25:01can think about going somewhere, but the wheels
- 25:04aren't going to turn until your car is
- 25:07on, until you take the ignition, put it
- 25:12in drive, and you put your foot down
- 25:13on the gas or the electric, whatever it
- 25:17is.
- 25:18I think that's an important thing.
- 25:21But you got to take that step, guys.
- 25:22I can't do it for you.
- 25:25Can't do it for you.
- 25:27I know you guys want to take it
- 25:28because you're here.
- 25:30The question is, how badly do you want
- 25:33it?
- 25:33Am I just something you're doing between, you
- 25:36know, chores?
- 25:37Or do you really want to change your
- 25:39life?
- 25:41So if that is the case, if this
- 25:44is not just some entertainment you're watching between,
- 25:47you know, popcorn, dinner, or dessert, I want
- 25:51to ask you right now, are you going
- 25:54to take this step?
- 25:56If you are, your life will change.
- 25:59Is it going to change overnight?
- 26:00No.
- 26:01Give it 36 or 90 days.
- 26:03Keep doing those things, right?
- 26:07A good example I can share with you
- 26:09is SEO, which we do for a lot
- 26:11of clients and including ourselves.
- 26:13You don't grow overnight in SEO.
- 26:16You grow cumulatively over time by taking small
- 26:22steps.
- 26:23Right?
- 26:24You don't need to post 10 million pages
- 26:26a day.
- 26:27Posting one or two pages a week, depending
- 26:28on what your niche is, can greatly help
- 26:31you to get better rankings in Google, better
- 26:36traction.
- 26:37So the first step, ladies and gentlemen, is
- 26:38to get out there.
- 26:41Okay?
- 26:43You got to know what you're going to
- 26:44measure, number two.
- 26:46Okay?
- 26:46So you know what it's going to be.
- 26:48Number three, you got to take that next
- 26:51meaningful step.
- 26:54So you got to get out there.
- 26:55Got to know what you're going to measure
- 26:57so you can measure it and take the
- 26:59step.
- 27:00And then you need to keep adapting if
- 27:03you're not where you want to be.
- 27:07My friends, keep learning.
- 27:10Keep growing.
- 27:12Keep becoming the person whose actions support the
- 27:16life you and everyone else says they want
- 27:20to be.
- 27:21It's one thing to say it, but it's
- 27:23another to actually do it.
- 27:26Are you ready to take that step?
- 27:29Are you ready to take these words from
- 27:31your mouth and put them into action?
- 27:35I don't know.
- 27:36Are you ready to do that?
- 27:37If you are, your life will start to
- 27:40change.
- 27:40If you're saying, John, this sounds nice.
- 27:41I want to keep talking about it, but
- 27:43not doing anything.
- 27:44It's not going to change.
- 27:46Have yourself a great rest of your day
- 27:47or evening.
