- 0:00Did you ever take a polygraph test called a lie detector
- 0:04test? It's a funny thing. They always work really amazingly well
- 0:08in movies. They don't work so very well in real life.
- 0:12That's why polygraph evidence is almost never admissible
- 0:16in a court in the United States. But what if you
- 0:20didn't have to detect the lie because everybody knew that
- 0:24the liar was lying? Now, there's a quote wrongly attributed
- 0:28to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, says they were lying. They knew they were lying.
- 0:32We knew they were lying. They knew that we knew, et cetera, et cetera.
- 0:35There's something even better. I'm linking to his essay called Live Not
- 0:39by Lies. Read it there. It is miserable to
- 0:43live in a culture of lies. Anyone familiar with the Soviet Union could
- 0:47tell you that, where lying was just a fact
- 0:52of life. It was a universal, like the air you breathe
- 0:55or the law of gravity. A miserable place to live,
- 0:59a dystopian place to live. But what if,
- 1:04what if, hear me out, what if there were a culture of
- 1:08lies at work in the church?
- 1:12What about that? Stay with me, I've got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit
- 1:16Father Robert McTeague, your host every day of The Catholic Current, coming to you from
- 1:19the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer look.
- 1:23Glad you're here. Live not by lies, says Solzhenitsyn, rightly so.
- 1:28But what if you grew up in that culture of lies? It would not only
- 1:31affect your soul and your relationships, it would even
- 1:35reflect your language. I've been reading a Polish
- 1:39author, in translation of course, named Krzysztof Soszynski,
- 1:43and he said that the culture of lies that grew
- 1:46up under Soviet occupation in Poland began to change
- 1:51the language. There were words that described life under the
- 1:54rule of the lie. There was the word called zwakminia,
- 1:59and he says that's a state of total pervasive socially embedded
- 2:03falsehood, a condition in which an entire
- 2:07society is saturated with lies so thoroughly that
- 2:11the truth becomes inaccessible. Well, that sounds like the stuff
- 2:15of nightmares, but wait, there's more. There's also the word called abuda,
- 2:20a deep performative hypocrisy, the gap between
- 2:24what is proclaimed and what is actually practiced, the mask worn
- 2:28so long it begins to feel like a face. So says
- 2:32Polish author Krzysztof Sawinski. You say, well, fine,
- 2:35Father, what does this have to do with life in
- 2:38the church? Well, here's another link for you, and it has to
- 2:43do with the various dioceses across the United States
- 2:46closing down nearly everything.
- 2:51And what's interesting is the language they use to
- 2:54describe it. It's not called the Oops, We Screwed
- 2:58Up and Now We're Facing the Consequences plan. It's not anything like that.
- 3:02All these plans, as far as I've been able to tell— I haven't looked
- 3:06at all of them, more about that in a minute— but they all have upbeat
- 3:09names that are called things like Flourishing Families
- 3:13and Into the Deep and Real Presence, Real Hope, Vision 2030,
- 3:18Called to Be Church. Now, in the diocese that I've
- 3:21looked into so far, Nobody says, how did
- 3:26we get here where we're closing down so many parishes, where we have
- 3:29such a dearth of vocations? And no one
- 3:33is talking about what do we do to
- 3:37make sure this bad situation never happens
- 3:41again? So that sunshiny language seems to me— I
- 3:45could be wrong, but it seems to me— is hiding some ugly realities
- 3:50that nobody wants to talk about. I,
- 3:53I'm an army of one. I'm just one guy. No one does my
- 3:57research with me. No one does it for me. I don't have the
- 4:01time to click on every hyperlink in this website that I
- 4:04found that goes into depth for every diocese that's suffering
- 4:09closures. So I want your help. Join me and
- 4:14go through, you know, follow the links, go through the dioceses and say,
- 4:17hey, did any of them any of them at all, not use
- 4:21sunshiny euphemisms? Do any of them, any of them all,
- 4:25say, we're here because,
- 4:29said gently, mistakes were made? Does anyone say,
- 4:33we learned our lesson, here's the proof, this is why you should
- 4:38trust us going forward? And then leave it in the comments, uh,
- 4:42if you're watching this on YouTube or if you're listening on podcast,
- 4:46Go to thestationofthecross.com/askfather
- 4:50and let's see how truly these managers of
- 4:54diocese, all the bureaucracy, etc., etc.,
- 4:58including senior Catholic cadres, the people who should really know better club—
- 5:01let's see how straight up they are,
- 5:04because we don't want to live in a culture of lies.
- 5:08I'm really grateful for your help. Meanwhile, think on these things today.
- 5:12Take them to prayer. Talk about it with those you love. Go in peace,
- 5:16and please do pray for me, for I am a
- 5:20sinner. Thanks for watching today. I release
- 5:24new videos on Mondays and Wednesdays. Check out the archives for
- 5:28more videos. You can listen to my podcast at stationofthecross.com,
