- 0:06Hey everybody, welcome back to spiders Sound off.
- 0:09This is Tom and. This is Porter.
- 0:11We are back in the Henrico Studios.
- 0:13We've upgraded the studios for our Christmas episode.
- 0:17Yeah. If you're not watching us on
- 0:19YouTube, you might want to check this one out live with the video
- 0:22feed because Tom has really created a a nice studio for us
- 0:25today for the Christmas show. Yep, and I was thinking next
- 0:28year I'll need to have a Porter stocking we can put on the the
- 0:32mantle here. But for now, you'll you'll see
- 0:34my back there if you look, if you look also have a couple
- 0:38bobble heads here that might be hard to see there by our coffee
- 0:41mugs. Got a this was from, I think
- 0:43maybe five years ago, maybe five years ago now there's a Kevin
- 0:47Anderson and Johnny Newman bobblehead.
- 0:51Doesn't get any better than than than those two folks.
- 0:54I think those were season ticket gifts at some point in a while
- 0:57ago, so there's probably some of you listening to have those
- 0:59somewhere. Anyway, we are recording this
- 1:02episode on a Sunday. We're going to talk about the
- 1:05men's victory from last night and the women's also had a
- 1:10victory yesterday. Album in, so we're going.
- 1:12To talk about those games, we'll do a little preview of there's
- 1:15only one game, there's no games midweek.
- 1:17We're going to be taking a break midweek so we and everyone else
- 1:20can celebrate their their holiday next weekend there is a
- 1:25game so the the men's have a game next weekend the men's
- 1:27team. So we'll talk about that We'll
- 1:29also do some Christmas movie discussions.
- 1:32OK, nice. But first you.
- 1:34Want to talk about? Not sure exactly what that's
- 1:36going to be. But we'll, we'll see.
- 1:37What it goes you? Want to talk about the men's
- 1:39game or from yesterday? Yeah, you talk.
- 1:41Yes, you take the lead on it. So while I was at the we played
- 1:43the Citadel last night at home. Had decent sized crowd for the
- 1:47holiday. It was probably like 4500,
- 1:49something like that. It's a fun game.
- 1:52So we got up early. Actually reminded me of the
- 1:56women's game. We'll talk about the women's
- 1:57game in a bit, but we got up early.
- 1:59Really couldn't expand that lead.
- 2:01Kind of it was 10. It got down to six at some
- 2:04point, but we really took over late.
- 2:07Citadel didn't show much. Every now and then they hit some
- 2:10threes in a row that kind of kept them in that game.
- 2:14But we put we played well. I think watching that game and
- 2:17then looking at the stats later, like it was just clear.
- 2:20I mean, and you've heard the coach talk about it like that
- 2:22game at Elon, the turnovers was uncharacteristic.
- 2:25And that's the word he's used a lot.
- 2:27Like, that's not how this team has played all year.
- 2:30It's also, you know, Mooney's had lots of years where the team
- 2:33is average less than 10 turnovers per game.
- 2:36Yeah, you went to the game live. I actually caught it later in
- 2:39the evening on replay because I had a a Christmas party to go
- 2:42to. But the thing I wrote just about
- 2:44the first half was we were up 2814 and Daughtry was in full
- 2:48beast mode. And he was.
- 2:49Every time he wanted to take it to the rim, he got to the rim.
- 2:53Yeah, it's interesting. I mean, I remember when we when
- 2:56he was coming here was recruited, there was like, wow,
- 2:59he's so efficient of a player and he's still showing that now
- 3:03we're going to because of the system we play.
- 3:05He's, you know, he hasn't been challenged yet for the 30 minute
- 3:08game. And what does that look like?
- 3:09But he had 17 points and 17 minutes.
- 3:12Yep, last night. That's that's pretty darn
- 3:14efficient. That is very the thing that I
- 3:16noticed the most is after this big turnover game at Elon is
- 3:19this was a game. We are clearly the better team,
- 3:22but coach also really focused on if you had an unforced error,
- 3:28like he brought you to the bench and what we saw, I mean, the
- 3:32team had a good day. But if you look at the starting
- 3:35lineup, so these are the same starters we've had all year,
- 3:38which is Tanner and Time. Johnston, AJ Lopez and Walls,
- 3:43That unit all play more than 20 minutes each.
- 3:47They had 11 assists and two turnovers across that entire
- 3:50group. If you look at the bench and
- 3:54quarter, one of your favorites and a player you know I like a
- 3:57lot as as well. Argar Bright, he had three
- 4:00turnovers, only played 14 minutes, so his minutes were
- 4:04lower than what we've seen lately.
- 4:05He's kind of been in that 20 plus.
- 4:07But he did have some unforced errors.
- 4:09And coach has been really clear in his, let's say, public
- 4:11communication that he still wants us to be aggressive.
- 4:14So if if you're aggressive and there's a turnover and it's, you
- 4:18know, the other, you know, you're going too fast and the
- 4:20other team steals it or you're on a fast break and you just
- 4:23kind of missed that pass a little bit.
- 4:25Like, I think he's OK with that. But there were some unforced
- 4:27errors by Argar Wright and his minutes were down.
- 4:29I think that's a good lesson for a freshman.
- 4:32And again, if you watch the game, then you never felt like
- 4:35any player was being penalized. I mean, Argar Wright still came
- 4:38in and out a lot, but I think he late he relied on the starters.
- 4:43I think they just have that kind of calming influence on the
- 4:45game. I mean, time didn't really score
- 4:47much, but anyway, so good win. I mean, we won 80 to 56, so
- 4:52that's a blow out we expect. Strange, strange box score.
- 4:55I mean Johnston zero shots. I mean the the purest shooter on
- 4:58the team takes zero shots the entire game.
- 5:00That was. I'm guessing he had 0 turnovers.
- 5:020 turnovers, 3 assists, 53 rebounds, but zero shots in 20
- 5:05minutes. That's just pretty strange.
- 5:08Colin Tanner's best game of the year.
- 5:09Yeah, 13 points. Five.
- 5:11Yeah, he was good. He was solid walls, had a great
- 5:13game. He was, I think, 7 for six for
- 5:15seven walls. Seemed to be able to do whatever
- 5:17he wanted inside and it was like.
- 5:20Well, he hit two threes, yeah. 2 for two for three.
- 5:22So they kind of left him alone out there.
- 5:24Tanner also had in his thirteen points at 5 rebounds.
- 5:27So he was kind of, he was doing it all.
- 5:29Yep, Lopez scoring from all three levels again.
- 5:31Roma Glue had a good game off the bench, as expected.
- 5:35I love the dunk at the end of the game, yeah.
- 5:36So Jalen, Jalen Robinson like. And Bryson with a block to get
- 5:41to set it up. He blocked the shot.
- 5:42So if you if you were there, what was really the two great
- 5:46things about that dunk? 1 the dunk itself.
- 5:48So if you haven't seen it, he was a fast break, but it was
- 5:50like one on two. There was a couple guys in his
- 5:52way and he just couldn't write through them and just giant
- 5:55dunk, right? It was the last points of the
- 5:57game. If you watched the bench, for a
- 6:00rich man like it, it was like New Year's Eve.
- 6:04They erupted. Walls, usually the leading
- 6:06cheerleader at those sort of moments in the game when we've
- 6:09got a big lead and the bench is getting to play and it's great
- 6:12to see like this team was having a great time.
- 6:16It's the, you know, coming from that Elon loss on the road, like
- 6:19that's the win that team needed. They've got a week off.
- 6:22They get to most of them will go home for a little Christmas
- 6:25break and. Elon so it's great to overtime.
- 6:27So they look they're looking tougher and tougher by the game.
- 6:29So that's that's actually interesting.
- 6:32We did I went to kind of appetizer or dinner happy hour
- 6:37at the local before the game with some friends of ours and
- 6:40their their daughter is a Elon. Is that Elon nice or now her
- 6:45parents are big Richmond supporters.
- 6:47But she did give us a little grief as as deserved.
- 6:51Also, my college roommate, Doctor Durham was at the game
- 6:56last night so I got to see him and and his wife.
- 6:59His son is going to U of R. Next fall graduulations.
- 7:03That's fantastic. So I'm looking forward to those
- 7:06when when my friend comes up and we'll go to some wood hauled
- 7:10dorm parties like we did freshman year a long, long time
- 7:15ago. But yeah, it was it was a fun
- 7:16game, kind of a get right game. Siddalo's not very good.
- 7:19I think we got a more challenging opponent this
- 7:22upcoming weekend. We'll get to later.
- 7:23Yep. One other thing on the, on the
- 7:26men's team, so like I, I just, I'm coming back to I, I still
- 7:29think that the prediction markets and prediction market by
- 7:35that I mean you know what people are predicting as our, as our
- 7:38postseason chances are off on this team.
- 7:40I think this team has a better chance of making the incident
- 7:44blade tournament than the prediction markets say.
- 7:48And it's because of a couple things.
- 7:49One, we play so many players, it's going to be perfect for
- 7:53tournament time because we're going to have depth that other
- 7:55teams aren't aren't prepared for, especially when you're
- 7:57playing three or four games in three or four days.
- 8:00And I think we're unpredictable. I mean, each time you look at
- 8:04the this team, somebody else, somebody new is stepping up like
- 8:08it's Daughtry, Tanner Walls. This game priorly it was prior
- 8:11game might have been Auger, Brighton, AJ Lopez.
- 8:13It's just changes from game to game makes this very difficult
- 8:16to scout. And I don't think the prediction
- 8:18markets have fully figured out a way to capture that.
- 8:22Now, having said that, you know, the NCAA tournament is not in
- 8:26the A 10 tournament, is not played in the Robin Center and
- 8:28we have not been a great team yet on the road or neutral
- 8:31courts. We do have the nice win against
- 8:32Belmont, but if we can figure the road out over the course of
- 8:38the A10 season, we're going to be a very interesting team come
- 8:41a 10 tournament time. Yeah.
- 8:42And I think post game Tanner, which in like we're still
- 8:45getting better, yeah. So I think absolutely players
- 8:47know that. And so I think there's a, the
- 8:51one thing I love with looking back on our last episode, like I
- 8:54know you were trying to get the positive out of maybe not the
- 8:58positive, but take the 20 turnover and say like, that's
- 9:01how we play. But I would say that's not how
- 9:02we play. Like that Elon game was just a
- 9:05bad, sloppy game for us. And I don't, I like it's not
- 9:10like we're having new line UPS anymore.
- 9:11Like these guys have played in these new line UPS.
- 9:13Well, I'm not saying that's how we play, but I'm saying when you
- 9:16play a lot of players and you have a lot of substitutions and
- 9:20you and you have a very deep roster and you play fast, there
- 9:23are going to be statistical anomaly games where you have a
- 9:25big pop in turnovers. And it's not going to be every
- 9:27game. Like last night.
- 9:28It wasn't that way at all. But like you will have an
- 9:30occasional game like we had at Elon where we turn the ball over
- 9:33too much. But I mean, I think the pros
- 9:35still that way. The cons with the system is
- 9:36playing because you, you know what, you're very disruptive to
- 9:38teams. I mean, you you can wear teams
- 9:40down. You have any advantage at the
- 9:41end of games? So I still like the way we're
- 9:44playing so. Yeah.
- 9:45I mean, I'll, I don't think this is a hot take.
- 9:47Like we will not have 20 turnovers again the rest of the
- 9:49season in a game. And if for some reason this we
- 9:54have a trend, let's say we have three games in a row where it's
- 9:5617 turnovers, 18 turnovers, that bench will get much tighter.
- 10:01Possibly. And so that's why I don't think
- 10:03it's going to happen. Like I think the players know
- 10:05that unforced errors are just not really accepted and not and
- 10:09not, that's not a Mooney system. I I don't think there's many
- 10:11coaches. Definitely not a Mooney system,
- 10:13but Mooney's not necessarily coaching like Mooney this year
- 10:15either. Mooney's changing and I, I think
- 10:17he's changing for the better with the, with the talent that
- 10:20he has, right. So you've got you've got 11 guys
- 10:23As for averaging double digit minutes, It's a it's a new
- 10:26system where he is playing a lot of people and he's playing in up
- 10:29tempo, push the ball pace. And I don't think the a 10 is
- 10:34going to be quite used to this Richmond team when we get in
- 10:36there. So I think it'd be very
- 10:37interesting to watch this. Team a couple things on the A10
- 10:40before we get to the women's game.
- 10:44You know, I, I gave them AC minus and then we saw in the
- 10:46middle of the day that Liberty beat Dayton.
- 10:49Yeah. So that's a that's a bad law.
- 10:51I mean, Liberty is not a terrible team, but Dayton is one
- 10:53of our premier teams. You would hope and they lost
- 10:57you. Called it on Loyola, my man.
- 10:58You called. It and then Loyola Chicago, who
- 11:01I, I think I said is going to be the thorn in the side of the
- 11:04A10. They had a nice win against
- 11:06Santa Clara. Who's a good team?
- 11:08And that and that, I think. On the road, semi away, it said.
- 11:10And so if if Loyola Chicago is about to get right.
- 11:14For the A 10s. They're going to get right,
- 11:16right into right into the A10. Called that.
- 11:18I was like, what are you talking about?
- 11:19They're not going to win. I have to.
- 11:20I don't. Remember, if we play them at
- 11:21home or or on the way on the road, I know we play them once.
- 11:25Thankfully we don't play them twice, but that I'm I'm still
- 11:30sticking to my they beat Saint Louis at least once this year
- 11:33and make the A10 in a place I think similar to last season
- 11:37where they'll be one team that's probably an at large and you
- 11:40just hope they don't win the tournament so we can get.
- 11:43We play, we play Loyola one time and it's at Loyola on Saturday,
- 11:47February 20. 8th that's late too, yeah.
- 11:50End of the season. OK, so yesterday at the actually
- 11:54started Friday at the Henrico Center was the for the culture
- 11:58charity Classic or yeah, Classic.
- 12:00Yeah, not a tournament. For the culture, it's, it's
- 12:03actually a really cool event. And we're actually recording
- 12:06this before the Penn State game today.
- 12:08And, and, and we had a slight correction from our first
- 12:10episode. We said Penn State played DCU
- 12:12Friday night. They actually played on
- 12:13Saturday. I actually stayed and watched
- 12:15some of that game after the Richmond game.
- 12:16So I got a little bit of information on Penn State.
- 12:18Yeah, on Friday, VCU got whooped by Georgia.
- 12:20Yeah, I'm assuming Georgia plays today.
- 12:24I I don't remember the other part of the schedule.
- 12:26Yeah. The first, the first thing I'll
- 12:28say about the game. So Alabama, A&MI think was
- 12:32surprisingly more resilient than we expected.
- 12:36They had a lot of length. They had athletes on the team
- 12:39like I think I turned to you in the first half and said this
- 12:41team doesn't feel like a team that you know, should not have
- 12:45any real T1 success this year because they just look like
- 12:48they're really close and I think.
- 12:50A lot of energy. A lot of energy.
- 12:53They played with passion. I would say that team is going
- 12:56to win some games this year and they're going to surprise some
- 12:58people the rest of the way. They seem to be getting better
- 13:00as they get ready for their conference season.
- 13:01And actually coach came over and talked to me for a few minutes
- 13:04after the game and he could the same thing he said they were.
- 13:06They're better than people giving them credit for.
- 13:08So yeah, that Alabama Ann team surprised us.
- 13:11And I can't say that, you know, a 14 point win I think was less
- 13:15than what we were looking for. But at the same time, when you
- 13:18see saw the athletes, they were rolling out a team has had team
- 13:22has something they're going to be they're going to be pretty
- 13:23decent from here on out. What were the final?
- 13:26I don't know if you have the stats in front of you like I
- 13:28when I was, I like seeing cuz we got back-to-back.
- 13:31So it's like Maggie was subbed out more early on then we're
- 13:35used to seeing, which I think is smart.
- 13:37And also that I think there's a point because we got that lead
- 13:40early. We crushed him in the first
- 13:42quarter that I think naturally the coach is probably expecting
- 13:46that this game was going to be a big win.
- 13:48And so he's able to give Maggie some, some rest early.
- 13:52Now it turned out that we couldn't really grow that lead
- 13:54and it may cut the lead a little bit.
- 13:56So Maggie played a lot towards the end of that game.
- 13:59But I like to see the coach use the bench a little bit more and
- 14:03also something I think he's really started the game before
- 14:06playing Simon and dude. Together.
- 14:08So that's a new kind of wrinkle. And actually it looked good
- 14:11together. I mean, it's, it's actually
- 14:12worked out. So I give him credit for that.
- 14:15I mean, a couple things about the, the, the box where the
- 14:18first half we saw 6 minutes out of Shanika Campbell and we both
- 14:21said wow, she's, she looked really good.
- 14:22So she gave us 6 solid minutes. So shout out to her, you know,
- 14:26she's probably working hard in practice to get in that first
- 14:29half. And I thought she looked really
- 14:31good for those, for those, those men she was in.
- 14:33And I, I mean, I like what Simon and Dewey are, are doing, but I,
- 14:37there's still an, there's an opportunity there for Shaniqua.
- 14:40Now, I don't think she's going to get tons of minutes, but I do
- 14:43think like if she if we can get her into that, you know, 5 to 10
- 14:47minute rotation on average in the 810 season, I think that'll
- 14:51do our team a lot of good in the in the long.
- 14:53Run and if you combine Perchetti and Rain Wright for a second,
- 14:56two freshmen, they combine for 33 minutes.
- 14:59They scored 15 points. I mean, if you get it's almost
- 15:02like think about it as like the Katy Hill roll from last year.
- 15:04If you get 15 points out of that combined 33 minutes every game,
- 15:08we're going to do, we're going to do really well.
- 15:09Ava's going to, I think, and this is maybe too much of A hot
- 15:14take and it's so long term, no one's ever going to call me on
- 15:17it. But she is such a good
- 15:19three-point shooter. Like if, if, if she's at UR for
- 15:23four years, I think it'll be interesting to see like her
- 15:25versus Rachel in total threes because she's playing a lot as a
- 15:29freshman. And when she's hot, like she
- 15:33reminds me of Rachel, like she's a scorer.
- 15:34Like when she when she hits a threes like you know the next
- 15:38one when she gets a chance has got a great.
- 15:40Percentage, yeah, she's going to be a special player.
- 15:42I agree with you. I think she's going to be a
- 15:43special player. She already is a really good, I
- 15:45mean one of the better freshman, you know, in the conference.
- 15:48So I mean, I, I think she's she's she's got a great future
- 15:51for sure. Rachel had an awesome game.
- 15:53I mean, she really carried the scoring for US, 20 points, 66
- 15:56rebounds in 35 minutes, 6 for 12 from 3.
- 15:59Great game for Rachel. So shout out to her.
- 16:02I thought towards the fourth quarter the Alabama AM team
- 16:06wasn't going away and they cut it to maybe 10 at one point in
- 16:09time or maybe it was even 9 and Coach put Dewey back in the
- 16:13game. And I think Dewey in that fourth
- 16:16quarter really ignited the the team with three consecutive
- 16:21fouls drawn. First it was a charge and then
- 16:23two over the backs trying to box out on rebounds.
- 16:26So we got 3 defensive stops because Dewey was playing really
- 16:29good defense in that fourth quarter.
- 16:30So shout out to her. 'Cause it was kind of the non
- 16:32box score. Yeah, stuff.
- 16:33Things you don't always see but like really, really make a
- 16:36difference in the game. So one of one of the better
- 16:39efforts I think I've seen out of Dewey defensively, really loved
- 16:42it. And I thought she really helped
- 16:44us seal the game. I mean, Maggie, I think she had
- 16:47three points going in the fourth quarter.
- 16:48She finished with 15 to go with six assists, 7 rebounds.
- 16:53Another solid game from Maggie and we're recording this before
- 16:56the Penn State game. So I think we have a fun feature
- 16:58in terms of what we're going to do there.
- 17:00We're going to, we're going to give you guys two different
- 17:02outcomes. We're going to give you a we
- 17:04beat Penn State today if and we're going to give you a we
- 17:07lost to Penn State today if segment and so.
- 17:11And just to, you know why we're doing this, I've got to go out
- 17:15of town this afternoon. So that's, blame me.
- 17:19We got to get this thing recorded and make sure we put it
- 17:21out on a normal Monday schedule. So are you going to get to the
- 17:25game, to the Penn State game or? Well, we're going to talk about
- 17:28like, yeah. We're going to do that.
- 17:29No, but are you personally? Yeah, I'll do that.
- 17:30I'll cover for you. So no, but you'll be at the game
- 17:32later. Oh yeah, I'm going to be at the
- 17:33game later today, so we. Can talk.
- 17:34We can talk about it in a week from now.
- 17:36Just what really happened you? Guys will know what happened in
- 17:39the Penn State game when this thing hits your inboxes
- 17:41tomorrow. So we'll, we'll give you.
- 17:42So we will beat Penn State. If so, we'll beat Penn State if
- 17:47we can contain the stellar #23 on their team.
- 17:53She is I, I watched a little bit of that VCU game live.
- 17:56She's got an incredible handle. Keomi Mcmiller, coach actually
- 18:00told me we recruited her. We wanted her to come to to
- 18:02Richmond. She's averaging 19 points a
- 18:05game. I think as big as as as as
- 18:07strong as a of a presence as Merkel is inside.
- 18:10The key to the game will be controlling Mcmiller.
- 18:12So I think you'll see some Alicia Newell on her.
- 18:16But it's going to take it's going to take the whole team
- 18:18playing really good defense to kind of they play fast and she's
- 18:21the spark plug in that offense. Not only do they have Merkel
- 18:23who's 66, they have a six foot 5 volleyball player who's super
- 18:27athletic as well inside. So they've got a lot of sides.
- 18:29Rotate the two of. Them they do.
- 18:30They play them together some and then there's a lot of passing
- 18:33over the top between the two of them.
- 18:35So like, so from one to the other, 'cause you could just
- 18:37throw it over top the defense. So we're going to have to figure
- 18:40out a way to keep Merkel off the low block as much as possible.
- 18:43She's she's, she's so strong, but I think Maggie's going to be
- 18:47too quick for their bigs inside like her, her bevy of moves
- 18:50inside. I mean, she's just too quick.
- 18:52She moves too fast for for the for the bigs to really shut her
- 18:55down. So I'm not as worried about her
- 18:56not being able to get her shots off.
- 18:59I really think we're going to, it's going to take a really good
- 19:01game out of the the full team. We're going to need Rachel to
- 19:04score. We're going to Ally to score.
- 19:06We're going to. They did score because this is
- 19:08when they won. Yes, correct.
- 19:09So if we win, these are the things that are going to happen
- 19:11today and and we win 82 to 75 if that's the case.
- 19:17I yeah, And I think there's a a part to maybe taking some hints
- 19:20from the VCU played Penn State yesterday.
- 19:23Penn State won, but it was a close game and pushing the ball,
- 19:28getting this up tempo, lots of scoring is going to be in our
- 19:31favor. You got to run Merkel into the
- 19:33ground because she she's, you don't want to suck the half,
- 19:36half court offense up and and let her just kind of relax.
- 19:39You got to keep pushing her. Yeah, so I'm looking for Ally to
- 19:41have AI think when when we win, ally's going to have a big game
- 19:44with assists, controlling that tempo as she does so well and
- 19:48shooting some threes if. If we were to lose, it's because
- 19:51we could, not because Mcmiller lights us up for 24.
- 19:54We just can't keep Merkel off the rebounds.
- 19:56She just she ends up with 14 rebounds and and and scores 18
- 20:00on put backs, which means our defense never never got us into
- 20:04the game. And they figured out a way to
- 20:05close out on Rachel so she doesn't get her three-point shot
- 20:07off of off. And if that happens, you know,
- 20:10it could be like an 80 to 78 Penn State result.
- 20:13I don't think they blow us out, but.
- 20:16I get a little worried because Merkel did not have a great
- 20:19scoring output against VCU. Yeah, VCU did a good job on her,
- 20:23I thought. So did they did did we learn
- 20:25something from that or did she come out later today and you
- 20:29said 18 like does she have 25 against us?
- 20:32And can we just not stop her? And like, as soon as IA player
- 20:37like that gets on a roll and is getting position, like it's like
- 20:40they, they gain that confidence. And I, I expect we'll see some
- 20:44zone. We played a lot, we played more
- 20:46zone yesterday that I'm used to seeing like kind of a 2-3.
- 20:49I could see us kicking it in a bit versus just trying to go
- 20:51one-on-one. My take is it's Miller that will
- 20:53beat us if they beat us. It's she's the guy, she's the
- 20:56the player I worry more about. But it's going to be a great
- 20:59game. They're #62 or three in the net.
- 21:01We're number 42 in the net. Very important game for us to
- 21:04win. Of course you guys already know
- 21:05the result when this thing hits, but we thought we would do a,
- 21:08you know, if we win, if we lose things, since we can't actually
- 21:11record this after the game due to scheduling.
- 21:13Today, OK, so we've got a a tough game coming up the men
- 21:17have a tough game coming up based in a week from now Before
- 21:21we do that we we want to talk a little bit about some Christmas
- 21:25Movies OK some holiday movies and we're going to do something
- 21:30a little bit different put Porter on the spot maybe I'll if
- 21:33I have some time put some graphics on this video so you
- 21:36can see this as it goes but we're going I'm going to ask
- 21:40Porter to rank Christmas movies one through 5 These are going to
- 21:44be 5 movies from what they are are our lifetime.
- 21:47These are not claymation or cartoons.
- 21:49These are going to be if I've. Never seen the movie.
- 21:51It's fair to say I might put it at the back of the list.
- 21:53And what's and what's different and may may some of you may have
- 21:56seen this from other podcasts we didn't create this is that I'm
- 21:59going to give him a movie and he has to decide where it is.
- 22:01One through 5, he cannot re rank anything, so he has to think
- 22:06about when he hears the movie, like is this one of his
- 22:08favorites? And he's going to put it one,
- 22:09but there's a chance that the next movie he likes even more
- 22:11now he's going to have to put it too.
- 22:13You got it. Yep, I got it.
- 22:14OK, so we're going to start with A Christmas Story 1983 classic.
- 22:20Where do you put that movie in your top five?
- 22:23Let's start off safe 3. OK, so Christmas story is 3.
- 22:26It is now 3 Home Alone 1990 Christmas Classic.
- 22:34I kind of like the movie, but like, I'm not sure because
- 22:36there's a couple that I really love, so I'm gonna go 4.
- 22:38So it's lower than Christmas story.
- 22:40OK, die hard. Oh, number two, baby.
- 22:44Die Hard is 22, so we got Die Hard 2, Christmas Story 3, Home
- 22:48Alone Four. That leaves A5 and A1 Christmas
- 22:52vacation. I love Christmas Vacation, but
- 22:55I've got there's so many good movies that I know you're going
- 22:57to call on, so I'm going to have to put it at 5.
- 22:59I don't love it at 5. I like I think.
- 23:02It's OK, And then what's going to be #1 then is ELF.
- 23:06Oh, it's a great. Movie Elf number one 2003
- 23:10classic with Will Ferrell. Just a side note.
- 23:14Just makes me think Yesterday my daughter's home from college and
- 23:17you know, I'm trying to force bonding time and I'm like, hey,
- 23:21come and please watch 15 minutes of this movie.
- 23:24She's like, what movie? I'm like Anchorman.
- 23:27So I made her watch Christmas class.
- 23:28I made her watch the 1st 15 minutes.
- 23:30She did not like that. But I'm like, hey, it's like,
- 23:32it's like women's live, you know, it's about this, you know,
- 23:34reporter getting the the big job, Christina Applegate.
- 23:38But yeah, she left after 15 minutes.
- 23:40She's like, that movie's stupid. But anyway, Will Ferrell's great
- 23:43and elf, I'm sure many of you have seen that and can't can't
- 23:48help see it on I'm a. Pressure guys are to watch
- 23:50Anchorman with you, actually. So on your final rankings, Elf
- 23:52one Die Hard 2, Christmas Story 3.
- 23:54Home Alone 4, Christmas Vacation 5 Feel free to play at home and
- 24:01do your own ranking. Anyway, let's move on to next
- 24:05weekend's event. We play Charleston Southern and
- 24:11the the men not. A particularly strong team, but
- 24:13they could. They could.
- 24:14They could. You know their.
- 24:15Massive scrums, Buccaneer, You're looking at, you're
- 24:18looking. At your computer, yes, the
- 24:21Buccaneers, they actually worry me a little bit.
- 24:23So now for for those who don't know much about them, they are 8
- 24:27and 5. Three of those wins are against
- 24:29D2 or D3 teams. And just a side note before I
- 24:33forget. So you know, the men's team, we
- 24:36had a tenth win and one of them was against a division two or
- 24:40three team. So we now have 9 Division One
- 24:43wins, which is one more than all of last six points.
- 24:45So they're that's a nice to. By Christmas we got a we got
- 24:48more wins than all of last year. We don't want to like last
- 24:51year's a pretty low bar, so that's not the bar to beat.
- 24:53But it is nice that kind of we're wait, we're going to be
- 24:55way past that number anyway. So Charleston Southern have some
- 25:00like opponents. They beat the Citadel by 10.
- 25:02Go ahead. They beat East Carolina by 12.
- 25:06Oh, OK. So that's that's a good win for
- 25:08them. They recently lost to South
- 25:10Carolina, but only by a dozen. So.
- 25:14So they've got some, they've got some.
- 25:15People, yeah, they're the big S yeah, that's high point Winthrop
- 25:18premier teams. Those two teams are in the
- 25:21hundreds. Charleston Southern right now is
- 25:23230 OK in the Bardovic? So they're a fourth highest team
- 25:28in that conference. 244 in Kenpon, by the way.
- 25:31Radford's in the Big South, so that's exactly 2.
- 25:35That team is five and eight right now.
- 25:36They're 249 in Bartevik. So having a tough first year,
- 25:39but that's to be expected. You you usually don't bring in a
- 25:42new coach when everything's great.
- 25:43Longwood also is in that somewhat local team.
- 25:48A lot of Longwood grads around this area, Gardner Webb, who we
- 25:52beat, who's ranked 360. They're one of the worst teams
- 25:56in that league. They they're looking at the
- 25:59stats. They have a top 200 defense, so
- 26:01they're core defence LED than than offense.
- 26:04They are good 3 point shooting team, three well.
- 26:07They defend the three pretty well.
- 26:09They have a player, Bryson Blaine is their top player.
- 26:13He's a local kid, played some at Elsie Bird. 6 foot 5 junior.
- 26:18Yes. And he had a little tour of JMU.
- 26:21He went there, played I think as a freshman and was hurt and then
- 26:25missed a year and then transferred.
- 26:27OK. Averages 19.7 rebounds and
- 26:31almost 4 assists a game. So he's kind of an all round
- 26:34star player for them. I was looking at their team.
- 26:37They have 11 players with 10 or more minutes per game.
- 26:40Sound familiar? Yeah.
- 26:43And and so, you know, they've got tall guards.
- 26:46Looking at their lineup, they I mean, they have a six nine guy.
- 26:50They don't have a lot of height. I mean I think 65 is tall for a
- 26:53guard, but they're not a big inside. 69610 guy, but it looks
- 26:57like Beagle and Wall should be able to feast a little bit Yeah,
- 27:00they're good at defending the three and they're also they're
- 27:02also good at shooting the three. So it's like to me that's the
- 27:05story of the game. I mean we should probably be
- 27:07working the ball inside to our bigs in order to to take to take
- 27:11these guys down. It should be a game we win.
- 27:13I think most of the sites are saying we're about a 90% chance
- 27:17of one of the. Yeah, I think Bartevik has this
- 27:1885 to 70. They do play Fuhrman today.
- 27:22So this will be, you know, when you when this pot is live,
- 27:27you'll be able to do some research and see how that
- 27:29Fuhrman game went. So we know how that game went
- 27:32for us. So it'll be another similar
- 27:34opponent? What?
- 27:38More interesting fact, they're actually leading the nation in
- 27:41the percent of their points they get from three pointers, so they
- 27:44are going to Chuck the three. Yeah, so I think compared to the
- 27:48Citadel, like this is a much tougher game.
- 27:51It's also a game where, you know, the, the, the team's got a
- 27:53week off and this is not, I mean, they'll practice during
- 27:56this week, but they do have some days off where they're going to
- 27:59be going home if they can see their family.
- 28:02So it's kind of there's always an interesting like your first
- 28:05game before the break. I think we've had some bad
- 28:08moments in the past where like everyone's ready for break and
- 28:12then you come out and lay an egg.
- 28:13We did not do that. We look solid, look against the
- 28:16Citadel and there's always a trick of coming back from break.
- 28:21Now both teams are going to be doing that.
- 28:22Like I said, they play today and then they have the rest of the
- 28:24week off. It's kind of a typical week off
- 28:26and. The ladies are off until the
- 28:2830th, so we will be able to do another pod between now and then
- 28:31to talk about the Rhode Island game.
- 28:32They have come up their first a 10 game so. 2nd A10 Game for the
- 28:35girls 2nd. Yeah, yeah, sure, we play.
- 28:36For whatever reason, remember we played Loyola Chicago.
- 28:40Yeah, that's right. And the the men also start their
- 28:42A10 I think in the 31st. That game's going to be
- 28:44interesting to talk about because pending a pending a win
- 28:47against Charleston, Southern will be 11 and 2.
- 28:50The 31st will be the test I think that everybody waits for.
- 28:53We get a really good team coming into the Robin Center.
- 28:55We're going to need a crowd turning out for that on New
- 28:58Year's Eve. So thank you guys for listening
- 29:01this year we had to. We will do another pod before
- 29:03the year is out, but we'll be taking this week off so there
- 29:08won't be a midweek pod. We do, however, something
- 29:10special in store. We're kind of working on a
- 29:11little Christmas holiday compilation video.
- 29:14Montage One minute 1 minute of. Glory and and a little twist on
- 29:19the spider sound off theme song. So expect to see that after this
- 29:25pod is out. But maybe Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 29:28we'll kind of get that out again.
- 29:29It's just it'll be a minute long.
- 29:31I, I, I actually think, and I mean, I'm, I'm a little biased.
- 29:34It might be the greatest Christmas song ever written
- 29:37about spider basketball. So.
- 29:40Here are we going to rank the different Christmas songs about
- 29:43spider basketball? I don't know if there's any
- 29:45others to compete compare against but it might be #1.
- 29:47That's right. Well, anyway, thank you guys.
- 29:49Hope you have a great holiday. Until next time.
- 29:53Be safe everybody, have a great Christmas, Happy holidays,
- 29:55whatever you celebrate, spend time with family or friends and
- 29:58enjoy yourself. We will see you sometime soon.
- 30:01Yeah. Until next time, this is Tom.
- 30:03Yeah, this is Porter. And this is spider sounding.
