- 0:06Speaker 1: All right, hello and welcome back to Twin City's Territory,
- 0:11Speaker 1: our Minnesota Twins podcast here on the Foul Territory Network.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I am Zach Pearce, editor at the Athletic, joined as
- 0:19Speaker 1: always by Dan Hayes with a cool Foul Territory hat.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I think you were that yesterday too, didn't you? Is
- 0:26Speaker 1: that your did? Yeah?
- 0:27Speaker 2: I did.
- 0:29Speaker 1: He is our Minnesota Twins beat writer at the Athletic,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and back today Tyler Duffy, longtime Major leaguer and former
- 0:36Speaker 1: Minnesota Twin. And Tyler, the entire world is wondering, how
- 0:40Speaker 1: did the dentist trip go yesterday?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Oh?
- 0:43Speaker 4: It's wonderful.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Got the cleaning and then you end with a hey
- 0:47Speaker 3: coming a week and you're gonna spend between five and
- 0:49Speaker 3: thirteen all.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Right to finish it up.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Are West needs to be touched up?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Okay? Got it? Not so bad?
- 1:00Speaker 4: Well?
- 1:00Speaker 2: It is?
- 1:01Speaker 1: It is, uh Friday, May first, It's May. Goodness, look
- 1:05Speaker 1: at that uh and it's a glorious morning in Minnesota.
- 1:09Speaker 1: The sun is out, the weather is nice, and man,
- 1:13Speaker 1: what a heck of a night in Minnesota sports.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Last night Saint Paul Saints won three to one. I
- 1:18Speaker 2: mean that was the same St.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Paul one.
- 1:21Speaker 1: The the Minnesota Twins started it off. Well, I don't
- 1:24Speaker 1: know if they finished before the Saints did they.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Did, know they did? They? Yes, the Twins started it off.
- 1:31Speaker 1: The Twins won. The Wild and Timberwolves both won game
- 1:34Speaker 1: six close out games to advance to the second round. Uh.
- 1:37Speaker 1: This this is not a hockey or basketball podcast, so
- 1:41Speaker 1: I won't go too deep into my thoughts from last
- 1:44Speaker 1: night to spare everybody. However, Uh, historic night. I thought
- 1:49Speaker 1: for sure after the Twins won cynical person that I
- 1:52Speaker 1: am like, that's going to be the one game we
- 1:53Speaker 1: win tonight, of course, but no, they just won all
- 1:55Speaker 1: of them. That never happens to Minnesota sports. And uh,
- 2:00Speaker 1: it's the first time in twenty nine seasons in which
- 2:04Speaker 1: there's been both an NBA and NHL franchise in this
- 2:08Speaker 1: state that they are both in the second round of
- 2:10Speaker 1: the playoffs twenty five years twenty five years of Wild
- 2:13Speaker 1: and Timberwolves overlap, and then four years at the beginning
- 2:16Speaker 1: of the Wolves tenure with the North Stars. First time
- 2:19Speaker 1: both are in the final eight, which I didn't look
- 2:22Speaker 1: up how many times it's happened for other markets. But
- 2:24Speaker 1: I've got to believe that's on the on the back
- 2:27Speaker 1: end of.
- 2:28Speaker 4: The roller fasters hitting the top. It's about to just draw. Yeah,
- 2:34Speaker 4: you know, that was a cool night.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Like really that was what was cool at the game.
- 2:41Speaker 2: At the Twins game, it was clear people were watching
- 2:45Speaker 2: the wild and they got the empty netter to make
- 2:48Speaker 2: it four to two right as the Twins got the
- 2:51Speaker 2: last out, and so you get or it was maybe
- 2:54Speaker 2: half the second before the last out and you hear
- 2:57Speaker 2: the crowd go nuts, and it's like, wait, the game
- 2:59Speaker 2: is still going. Oh oh, that's what just happened. That's
- 3:02Speaker 2: what just happened. And Shelton, Derek Shelton mentioned it after
- 3:04Speaker 2: the game like he was like, that was a cool
- 3:06Speaker 2: moment because everybody knew what happened at that point. And
- 3:09Speaker 2: then he saw the video of the empty netter and
- 3:12Speaker 2: like that was There were good vibes everywhere last night.
- 3:14Speaker 2: It was cool.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And then, uh, you had a night on the town
- 3:18Speaker 1: last night, Dan, how was how was Uh? How is
- 3:20Speaker 1: the scene there? I mean, you behaved yourself, but but
- 3:23Speaker 1: we're fans. We're fans pouring out after the Wolves game
- 3:26Speaker 1: too and everything.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I was like right across the street from the
- 3:28Speaker 2: Target Center that was. That place went from having eight
- 3:33Speaker 2: people into being jam packed in twenty minutes. And Jaden
- 3:37Speaker 2: Daniels or McDaniels is a like. That was a stone.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Cold, bona fide superstar, unbelievable, unbelievable series. It truly was.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I I direct you to the Athletic to read all
- 3:51Speaker 1: about both of those if you're interested, If if hockey
- 3:56Speaker 1: or basketball makes you want to you know, StEB a
- 3:58Speaker 1: pencil in your eye or something. There will be time
- 4:01Speaker 1: codes at the bottom. You can skip this, although if
- 4:03Speaker 1: you're still listening to this at this point, you probably
- 4:05Speaker 1: are are in it with us. But anyway, we'll get
- 4:08Speaker 1: back to the baseball. We've only had the one game
- 4:11Speaker 1: since we came to you yesterday, of course, and the
- 4:14Speaker 1: Twins got back in the win column right after we
- 4:17Speaker 1: got done talking about the latest wave of bullpen issues
- 4:20Speaker 1: and bats coming up short and not being there to
- 4:24Speaker 1: support a great game from their starting pitchered in everything.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Of course went back the other way last night.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a big development moment for Andrew Morris. That's
- 4:35Speaker 2: something that the Twins. They need to see positive developments
- 4:38Speaker 2: in that bullpen and you get the support there. Bailey
- 4:42Speaker 2: over was really good. And here's the part that I'm
- 4:44Speaker 2: really enjoying about it. Bailey over was you could tell
- 4:47Speaker 2: very excited after the game to come through and get
- 4:52Speaker 2: a win like that, and pitch as well as he did.
- 4:54Speaker 2: He was so efficient and fast, and then the offense
- 4:56Speaker 2: just kept adding on. You know, you get the early
- 5:00Speaker 2: Jeffers Homer to give them the lead, Bucks and Homer.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Then the Jays, who are also a fourteen win team,
- 5:08Speaker 2: just like the Twins, started to kick the ball around
- 5:11Speaker 2: and the Twins took advantage and you know added on.
- 5:14Speaker 2: That was a good victory, and you're right, it was.
- 5:18Speaker 2: It was needed after the Seattle, the loss of the
- 5:21Speaker 2: rubber match, just because their in need of good vibes,
- 5:25Speaker 2: their need of something to keep themselves from going the
- 5:28Speaker 2: wrong direction. They got road trip next week to d C,
- 5:33Speaker 2: which you know, who knows that the Nats are, but
- 5:35Speaker 2: also Cleveland, so it's gonna get tough. And this to
- 5:40Speaker 2: get that first one against the Jays, who they beat them,
- 5:43Speaker 2: you know, they they got them in Toronto two. That
- 5:46Speaker 2: was a big win, just to get things kind of
- 5:47Speaker 2: going back the other way.
- 5:50Speaker 1: You mentioned Bailey over Dan six innings, pitched four hits,
- 5:53Speaker 1: one earned run another great star. We mentioned the stat
- 5:57Speaker 1: yesterday that the Twins had lost six straight games in
- 6:00Speaker 1: which a starting pitcher had gone at least six nights
- 6:04Speaker 1: and allowed two runed runs or less. A frustrating Yeah, I.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Know, I was.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I was ready for you drop some wisdom. Yeah, you
- 6:13Speaker 1: need two or three things to go well, probably to
- 6:15Speaker 1: have a chance. And the hitting in bullpen was not
- 6:18Speaker 1: going well. But last night bullpen solid, did not allow
- 6:21Speaker 1: a run in the three innings. But Bailey ober Dan
- 6:25Speaker 1: getting it done for the Twins this year in what's
- 6:28Speaker 1: been a pretty much all around solid starting rotation. How's
- 6:33Speaker 1: he doing it?
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yeah, he's done it with diminished velocity, I mean knows it,
- 6:39Speaker 2: and he is figuring out like how to pitch, and
- 6:44Speaker 2: he's he's shown this one. There's just an absolute sense
- 6:48Speaker 2: of relief on his face. He wore it so hard
- 6:52Speaker 2: last summer. In June, he gave up thirty runs and
- 6:55Speaker 2: thirty innings, gave up a team record I think it
- 6:58Speaker 2: was fourteen home runs in the month. Just you could
- 7:02Speaker 2: sense it the whole way. He was so disappointed. But
- 7:06Speaker 2: more than that, he was searching for answers. Time. He
- 7:08Speaker 2: was not healthy, and he's been the most consistent pitcher
- 7:11Speaker 2: on the Twins for going on five years now. You
- 7:14Speaker 2: could always pencil those starts in for six innings, three
- 7:18Speaker 2: runs or fewer at that point, like that was what
- 7:21Speaker 2: baileyover was gonna give you every time out, and all
- 7:23Speaker 2: of a sudden he turned into what he was last year,
- 7:25Speaker 2: which was not good and he knew it. He said
- 7:28Speaker 2: at one point there was a game where he threw
- 7:31Speaker 2: ten straight pitches and had no idea where they were
- 7:33Speaker 2: going because he had no confidence in his lead foot
- 7:37Speaker 2: when he planted and delivered. He worked very hard on
- 7:42Speaker 2: his hip this offseason, and his command is back to
- 7:46Speaker 2: the place where he feels confident that he knows what
- 7:49Speaker 2: he can do with stuff, and like, yeah, the velocity
- 7:52Speaker 2: is down, and you know, a good night for him
- 7:55Speaker 2: right now is like eighty eight point eight mile prior fastball.
- 7:59Speaker 2: This is guy who to thrive at ninety one ninety two.
- 8:01Speaker 2: So that's not you know, we're not we're not talking
- 8:04Speaker 2: about a monster dip, but it's significant. You don't have
- 8:08Speaker 2: a lot of wiggle room when you drop down there,
- 8:10Speaker 2: and for him to be successful, he needs to be
- 8:15Speaker 2: just on with everything else and mixing and matching because
- 8:19Speaker 2: he comes from that that high angle and so he
- 8:21Speaker 2: can deceive hitters and just truly pitch. And he said
- 8:24Speaker 2: last night his hand positioning is better. He feels like
- 8:27Speaker 2: he is kind of locked in physically. He said, his
- 8:30Speaker 2: hip that it's making all the difference because he knows
- 8:34Speaker 2: where things are going and when he does. You know,
- 8:37Speaker 2: he was getting into how he set guys up and
- 8:42Speaker 2: he can do that now and not like last year.
- 8:44Speaker 2: It was sort of like this just go because he
- 8:47Speaker 2: just had You know, it's you. You can tell when
- 8:50Speaker 2: a guy is like thrived off command his whole life
- 8:53Speaker 2: and he's dealing with not having it, Like he had
- 8:56Speaker 2: to learn so many tricks last year, and now it's
- 8:58Speaker 2: the healthy version of him applying some of those tricks
- 9:01Speaker 2: they learn, but also able to put the ball where
- 9:04Speaker 2: he once And I mean, there was a look of
- 9:06Speaker 2: relief and just like I don't know he was. He
- 9:09Speaker 2: was very excited, Like you could tell he's just sitting
- 9:12Speaker 2: back and taking in the moment last night, because you know,
- 9:16Speaker 2: I'm sure there's been points where he wondered if it
- 9:18Speaker 2: ever happened again.
- 9:20Speaker 1: For those listening instead of watching Dan describe Bailey Over's
- 9:25Speaker 1: efforts last season as covering his eyes and throwing a pitch.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I mean, he absolutely like he absolutely felt so lost
- 9:34Speaker 2: at times last year. And he's a he's a as
- 9:38Speaker 2: down the middle of a guy as you'll talk to,
- 9:41Speaker 2: Like he is just calm, and you could tell he
- 9:47Speaker 2: was pretty rattled last year, like it just was so
- 9:51Speaker 2: far from where he was. And I mean to hear
- 9:54Speaker 2: him say that, and I asked him last night because
- 9:56Speaker 2: he said it at twins Fest. He's like, you know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: I'd have my stuff for a few innings and then
- 10:00Speaker 2: I'd come out and I would throw ten pitches and
- 10:03Speaker 2: not have an idea where a single one of them
- 10:05Speaker 2: was headed. And that can't be like duff have you
- 10:09Speaker 2: have you run into games like that where.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Like, yeah, there's I mean when I when I was starting, especially,
- 10:15Speaker 3: there'd be a batter like you kind of you bring
- 10:18Speaker 3: that leg up to throw and you're like, I'm not
- 10:21Speaker 3: really sure what's gonna happen right now, and you're like
- 10:23Speaker 3: you could probably go back and find him, like it'd
- 10:25Speaker 3: be a random like four pitch walk, like not close
- 10:28Speaker 3: and it's like okay, forget about that one reset you
- 10:31Speaker 3: know kind of thing.
- 10:32Speaker 4: But to your point about the velocity.
- 10:34Speaker 3: I wouldn't be surprised last year, like, yeah, he's a
- 10:36Speaker 3: little dinged up, but you know, in the world of
- 10:39Speaker 3: throwing the baseball as hard as you can, when all
- 10:42Speaker 3: of a sudden your villa dips, all you want to
- 10:44Speaker 3: do is try and throw hard again. And I think
- 10:47Speaker 3: what we're seeing this year is Bailey settling into I
- 10:52Speaker 3: don't care that I'm not throwing ninety three or ninety four.
- 10:55Speaker 2: When I reach.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Back, I'm gonna throw this eighty eight and you're gonna
- 10:58Speaker 3: hit a pop up to shortstop, and then the next
- 11:00Speaker 3: guy's going to come up.
- 11:02Speaker 4: And that's pitching. At the end of the day.
- 11:05Speaker 3: You know, it's in a world of stuff plus and
- 11:07Speaker 3: all this craziness around.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Throwing as hard as you possibly can.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Like he's pitching, and you know there's a reason everyone
- 11:15Speaker 3: that comes up they know what he's doing. They're out
- 11:18Speaker 3: in front, they're capping it, they're breaking their back, they're
- 11:20Speaker 3: just like they're uncomfortable because he doesn't.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Care that he's not throwing ninety three. He's gonna throw his.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Change up and then his slider, and then his eighty
- 11:28Speaker 3: eight is gonna play like ninety two, and then you're
- 11:30Speaker 3: out and you know it's for Bailey, like you said
- 11:34Speaker 3: that calmness. I guarantee you he's like, all right, cool,
- 11:37Speaker 3: like I'm just gonna throw it. I know how to throw,
- 11:39Speaker 3: put it where I want, and you're out, and there's
- 11:41Speaker 3: something when you're in that you know. I hear Joe
- 11:44Speaker 3: talking about at times the flow state. Like I guarantee
- 11:47Speaker 3: you he's like, all right, here comes boom. You're out
- 11:50Speaker 3: and that's a great place to be on the mound
- 11:52Speaker 3: and you try and ride that as long as you can,
- 11:55Speaker 3: and you know, hope that it lasts for thirty starts
- 11:57Speaker 3: because what he's doing right now, I guarantee his body
- 12:00Speaker 3: feels great too, because he's not stressing.
- 12:02Speaker 4: He's not fighting every pitch to try and reach back
- 12:04Speaker 4: and do extra.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And we saw him do that earlier. I think in
- 12:08Speaker 2: his second start, you saw him try to get some
- 12:11Speaker 2: velocity and hump it up there and it looked like
- 12:14Speaker 2: he was there was he was max efforting, which when
- 12:17Speaker 2: a six foot nine tall person.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Does that, fall in and yeah, it's just.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you can see it, and you're right he did not.
- 12:26Speaker 2: There was one sequence against Vladimir Guerrero where he said
- 12:31Speaker 2: he nearly blew a fastball by him, went away, threw
- 12:36Speaker 2: an off speed I believe away, and then came back
- 12:38Speaker 2: inside and broke his bat with a sinker. And you
- 12:41Speaker 2: could tell he was just kind of geeked off that
- 12:42Speaker 2: because he is pitching and he's setting guys up and
- 12:46Speaker 2: he's focused on that again, and it's that's clear that
- 12:50Speaker 2: that is like he's just in a good spot because
- 12:54Speaker 2: he's worried about that and not the other stuff.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yep, Billy a career worst five point one e or
- 13:04Speaker 1: A last year and twenty seven starts three five five
- 13:08Speaker 1: this year in seven starts close to his career best,
- 13:14Speaker 1: his career best over a full season three four to
- 13:16Speaker 1: three and twenty twenty three. We get more to talk
- 13:20Speaker 1: about from the game Thursday nights, Andrew Morris, We're gonna
- 13:25Speaker 1: talk about who's gonna hit a home run on Friday
- 13:28Speaker 1: and more after this word from our sponsor.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Todd Father, it's getting a little warm out. That means
- 13:36Speaker 5: let's hit some concerts, let's hit some baseball games. And
- 13:39Speaker 5: where am I going to go to find those tickets?
- 13:40Speaker 5: And if you want to sing the answer, you can, We're.
- 13:43Speaker 6: Going to seek Hey, hey, listen, Ultimately at the end
- 13:46Speaker 6: of the day, it is getting warmer and people want
- 13:48Speaker 6: to leave the house, and it's time to leave, go
- 13:50Speaker 6: see a ball game. I guess where you can find
- 13:52Speaker 6: the best tickets, best spots, best places to go see.

- 14:39Speaker 1: All right, Todd, father's got some pipes. I will say
- 14:43Speaker 1: that's dulce toes, Yes, tulcit tones exactly. All right, we're
- 14:49Speaker 1: back the Twins game. I will try to get the
- 14:54Speaker 1: wild and Timberwolves out of my head and finish this
- 14:56Speaker 1: podcast strong. But it got very interesting in the seventh
- 15:02Speaker 1: inning when Andrew Morris came in to pitch. Ober started
- 15:08Speaker 1: the seventh game of a single to Ernie Clement. Anthony
- 15:10Speaker 1: Bonda came in for three hitters, which fun fact, I
- 15:14Speaker 1: forgot that that's a rule now that you have to
- 15:16Speaker 1: face It's still he's sitting here getting frustrated, like why
- 15:21Speaker 1: did they leave him in?
- 15:21Speaker 2: Oh?
- 15:22Speaker 1: Right, anyway, we had two outs two on Andrew Morris
- 15:28Speaker 1: came in Dan to face George Springer in a big
- 15:31Speaker 1: moment in the game. Twins were up four to one
- 15:34Speaker 1: at the time, and Morris has been has had kind
- 15:38Speaker 1: of a wild ride so far for the Twins. He's
- 15:41Speaker 1: had some long relief outings for better or worse, but
- 15:44Speaker 1: came up big in the seventh last night.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the first time this season where he's
- 15:49Speaker 2: come in in the middle of an inning, which we'll
- 15:53Speaker 2: get to I want to hear from Duff a little
- 15:55Speaker 2: bit later about that, just the development point there. But
- 16:00Speaker 2: he came in and got George Springer, which you know
- 16:03Speaker 2: that's their second best hitter, right now it's you know,
- 16:07Speaker 2: that was a big spot in the game, and he
- 16:11Speaker 2: thrived like he fell behind two. Oh, but he got Springer.
- 16:15Speaker 2: He came back and I think it was a two
- 16:17Speaker 2: to one, got Springer to hit just a weak little
- 16:19Speaker 2: comebacker and it led to a really funny moment because
- 16:22Speaker 2: he was positioned where he looked at second base immediately
- 16:25Speaker 2: and was looking to throw and Luke he said after
- 16:31Speaker 2: the game that Luke Keishall's eyes because Luke Keishall was
- 16:35Speaker 2: nowhere near the bag because the play was first base,
- 16:39Speaker 2: and he said, like, Luke Keishall's eyes lit up like no,
- 16:45Speaker 2: like that slow motion, and and so he was like
- 16:49Speaker 2: and then I just remembered, oh, yeah, I can go
- 16:51Speaker 2: to first base and get out. He totally forgot how
- 16:53Speaker 2: me out to work. I mean, it doesn't surprise me.
- 16:55Speaker 2: It's a big, high leverage moment. You could tell he
- 16:58Speaker 2: was pretty worked up after he came back and got
- 17:01Speaker 2: another three outs into eight and then they pulled him.
- 17:04Speaker 2: And that's the one thing. All his outings had been
- 17:07Speaker 2: like two plus innings and he'd actually been really good
- 17:11Speaker 2: for two innings and that third inning giving up you know,
- 17:14Speaker 2: three run homers or big doubles, but you know, in
- 17:18Speaker 2: short stints he's looked really good and looks like he
- 17:21Speaker 2: could kind of develop into a like he's a candidate
- 17:24Speaker 2: to develop into a leverage guy in this bullpen. And
- 17:28Speaker 2: I thought that that was just a big point for
- 17:31Speaker 2: him to kind of come in, put out a fire
- 17:34Speaker 2: and you know, get that notch in your belt, because
- 17:37Speaker 2: you can't just come in overnight and be that guy
- 17:41Speaker 2: like there is when you're a starter like Duff, I imagine
- 17:45Speaker 2: it took a little while to get used to not
- 17:48Speaker 2: being ready for the start of a game first, and
- 17:51Speaker 2: then you know, routine changes and like when, like what
- 17:55Speaker 2: do you remember about your development path and like those
- 17:58Speaker 2: kind of check marks moments.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Yes, I uh, well, obviously I started, you know, first
- 18:04Speaker 3: two years, and then the out of camp it was like, hey,
- 18:07Speaker 3: you can be on the team, but you're gonna be
- 18:09Speaker 3: in the bullpen.
- 18:10Speaker 4: I'm like, sweet, don't care. You know, I'm a twin.
- 18:14Speaker 3: And so in the moment, you know you're gonna say
- 18:17Speaker 3: yes to everything, but there is that adjustment period again,
- 18:21Speaker 3: and like you said, he's had the longer outings, so
- 18:23Speaker 3: it's like most of those are the less stress. You know,
- 18:26Speaker 3: you're already losing early. You know, it's just eat innings
- 18:30Speaker 3: like kind of thing. But that last night was one
- 18:32Speaker 3: where it's like you got to come in guns blazon,
- 18:35Speaker 3: and that is the big the big next step is
- 18:38Speaker 3: you know, there's no settling into that game. Like you said,
- 18:40Speaker 3: you come in face George Springer with the runners on base,
- 18:43Speaker 3: like he's hunting a strike every at that first pitch,
- 18:47Speaker 3: and so it's like, you know, you got behind to
- 18:49Speaker 3: end up getting him out. But that moment for him,
- 18:52Speaker 3: I guarantee you that's he was as full throttle as
- 18:54Speaker 3: he's been this year. You know, obviously when he made
- 18:57Speaker 3: his debut, you know you're gonna get some energy. But
- 18:59Speaker 3: this is that next little bump of like, okay, this
- 19:02Speaker 3: is what pitched out the bullpen's like, you know, I
- 19:04Speaker 3: know Latroy's down there. He did both, you know, had
- 19:08Speaker 3: success and failures doing everything. He's coaching those guys up,
- 19:12Speaker 3: and that's I think he quietly is probably a huge
- 19:15Speaker 3: part of some of these guys' success and figuring out
- 19:18Speaker 3: who they are in the bullpen right now. But yeah,
- 19:21Speaker 3: in that moment, like you know, the phone rings and
- 19:24Speaker 3: who knows if he even was expecting it to be him.
- 19:26Speaker 4: That's the one.
- 19:27Speaker 3: It's so hard to even like he may have been
- 19:29Speaker 3: sitting there with his feed up, you know, like okay,
- 19:31Speaker 3: it's not me, and then boom, you know, that adrenaline spikes.
- 19:35Speaker 3: You're in the game, and then you get an out.
- 19:38Speaker 3: And the toughest part, which of you know, I was
- 19:40Speaker 3: that guy for a while, is that come in finishing
- 19:42Speaker 3: inning through the next that adrenaline is so high, you know,
- 19:47Speaker 3: you get that out, it's a huge moment.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Everyone the crowd's fired up. Everybody's fired up. You got
- 19:51Speaker 4: the out.
- 19:52Speaker 3: The starter's giving you high five because you saved his ass,
- 19:54Speaker 3: like it's just great.
- 19:56Speaker 4: And then it's like okay, now go back out.
- 19:58Speaker 3: And so you got to keep it going and you know,
- 20:00Speaker 3: to get that job done, that's huge. And that's a
- 20:03Speaker 3: great role to have for a team. You know, have
- 20:05Speaker 3: a guy that can come in in the fifth, sixth,
- 20:07Speaker 3: seventh to slam.
- 20:09Speaker 4: A door early, get you to the next guy.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Like that's a great role and it's someone that they
- 20:15Speaker 3: need right now. And you know, if that's gonna be him,
- 20:17Speaker 3: like ride the wave, you know, and you'll see his
- 20:20Speaker 3: stuff tick up because he's not having to throw as
- 20:22Speaker 3: many pitches.
- 20:24Speaker 1: You know.
- 20:24Speaker 4: The only issue with that is you're gonna lose.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Your long guy because then you ask him to go Therefore,
- 20:30Speaker 3: he's not gonna be like, he may not be as sharp,
- 20:32Speaker 3: and like you said, after tu innings lately it's been
- 20:34Speaker 3: kind of rocky, so it's like, you know, he's your
- 20:37Speaker 3: twinning guy, and get him out of there, you know,
- 20:39Speaker 3: And that's just something the season progresses they'll have to
- 20:41Speaker 3: figure out.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yeah, they definitely if they want to make him get
- 20:47Speaker 2: bigger roles, they'll need to sufficiently replace his long man spot.
- 20:53Speaker 2: But that's like, this is all something that takes time
- 20:55Speaker 2: over the course of a season. It does not happen overnight.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Because he is so young. I mean, I don't know
- 21:01Speaker 2: if he's done back to back days yet. That's gonna
- 21:04Speaker 2: be a challenge on Sloane And yeah, there they'll baby
- 21:10Speaker 2: him through it, like they have to baby him through it.
- 21:13Speaker 2: But he's definitely the guy where like you can see
- 21:17Speaker 2: it there because his fastball ticks up when he's thinking
- 21:20Speaker 2: he's in shorter stints. And if they tell him that
- 21:24Speaker 2: that something Cody Funderberg has had to struggle with over
- 21:26Speaker 2: the years, it's like, all right, we need you to
- 21:28Speaker 2: be two plus. Okay, wait this time out, you're gonna
- 21:31Speaker 2: be one inning and yeah, but do you trust that
- 21:34Speaker 2: you're one inning because you've been two plus the whole time?
- 21:37Speaker 2: So like, how do you empty the tank out? Because
- 21:39Speaker 2: what if the manager needs me to go back and
- 21:41Speaker 2: and I've just emptied everything and like so you know,
- 21:45Speaker 2: it's all baby steps. It can't happen. It doesn't happen
- 21:48Speaker 2: overnight unless you are say like yoan Duran where you're
- 21:51Speaker 2: throwing one hundred and four and you know, like then
- 21:55Speaker 2: they're like, yes, you are an elite reliever possibly here where.
- 21:58Speaker 2: That's what we're gonna do with you. You're a high
- 22:00Speaker 2: leverage guy. Don't worry about going long. Maybe they'll have
- 22:03Speaker 2: you go to and in some days. But so watching
- 22:07Speaker 2: how that develops over the course of the season is
- 22:09Speaker 2: gonna be interesting because they need people to step up
- 22:11Speaker 2: like that. They they were hoping it's gonna be mark
- 22:13Speaker 2: A Wry he's struggling at triple A right now. You know,
- 22:16Speaker 2: there's a chance maybe we'll see John Klein. There was
- 22:19Speaker 2: in the off season there was talk that Connor Prelip
- 22:21Speaker 2: might be that guy, and then he went to velocity camp,
- 22:23Speaker 2: or he went to pitching camp in January and added
- 22:26Speaker 2: the curve ball, and now it's like, oh, Connor prelip
- 22:28Speaker 2: might instead be a starter because he has the he
- 22:31Speaker 2: has a soft pitch to pair with all of his
- 22:33Speaker 2: really hard pitches, and like someone has to step forward
- 22:38Speaker 2: because you know, Louis Arland came back last night and
- 22:41Speaker 2: they could really use Louis Arland right now and they
- 22:44Speaker 2: don't have one, you know, like or they don't have
- 22:47Speaker 2: one that they isn't known quantity yet because it took
- 22:51Speaker 2: Louis Arland three years to become this and so yeah,
- 22:56Speaker 2: so it's like the start one of those first moments
- 22:58Speaker 2: in the process where you it happened, and you could
- 23:01Speaker 2: tell that was a big moment for Andrew Morris because
- 23:03Speaker 2: LaTroy came over after the game and was a giving
- 23:06Speaker 2: him shit about the forgetting how men outs they were
- 23:09Speaker 2: and like it was a classic LaTroy. But then also
- 23:11Speaker 2: you could tell it was like coming over to reaffirm
- 23:16Speaker 2: and and let everyone wan like talk to him in
- 23:18Speaker 2: front of a bunch of guys and like just make
- 23:21Speaker 2: sure he knew that was.
- 23:23Speaker 3: A big moment, right, No, that goes a long way, man,
- 23:26Speaker 3: like when somebody comes up after something like that and
- 23:29Speaker 3: they're like, hey, that was like you did a hell
- 23:31Speaker 3: of a job to day, Like it's you know, you
- 23:33Speaker 3: did that.
- 23:34Speaker 4: But then the teammate telling you or a coach like
- 23:36Speaker 4: singling you out like that, that matters a lot.
- 23:38Speaker 2: That's huge.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's anything in life, right, the validation from
- 23:43Speaker 1: from your peers, that's that's fantastic. Well, a few more
- 23:48Speaker 1: things to talk about from last night, and then we'll
- 23:51Speaker 1: take a peek at the weekend the rest of the
- 23:54Speaker 1: series with Toronto as well.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Now it's time for our daily Dingers from FanDuel and
- 24:04Speaker 2: let's uh, this is a new segment. Let's let's talk
- 24:10Speaker 2: about Ryan Jeffers and just what he's done a little
- 24:13Speaker 2: bit lately. Ryan Jeffers, I, you know, I was wondering
- 24:18Speaker 2: how he's gonna respond. He's going into a walk here
- 24:20Speaker 2: in free agency, and I was one wondering how he'd
- 24:25Speaker 2: handle it. He's been he had one of his better
- 24:28Speaker 2: years at the plate last year, but he didn't have
- 24:30Speaker 2: power the way he had. You know, he's hit twenty
- 24:33Speaker 2: one and sixteen in previous seasons. In last year he
- 24:35Speaker 2: had nine, but he put together really good at bats,
- 24:38Speaker 2: and you know, it was just sort of like it
- 24:41Speaker 2: was a good year. But I know he wants big
- 24:43Speaker 2: things for himself in free agency, expecting to get to
- 24:46Speaker 2: free agency, and so I was like, is he gonna
- 24:48Speaker 2: put too much pressure on himself? I don't know. I
- 24:50Speaker 2: wonder how he responds. And starting with the abs stuff,
- 24:55Speaker 2: he's been really good at just making himself valuable. Even
- 25:00Speaker 2: when he is he's found another way to add value
- 25:03Speaker 2: to his game, Like he's very good at colin. He like,
- 25:08Speaker 2: you know, he's the challenge king. I believe he has
- 25:10Speaker 2: the most challenges in baseball. If not, he's top two
- 25:13Speaker 2: or three. And I wonder if that's set a tone
- 25:16Speaker 2: for him because he has now just taken off at
- 25:19Speaker 2: the plate too. You know, he's got nine oh four
- 25:23Speaker 2: ohps on May one, and it's four home runs. The
- 25:29Speaker 2: slug is up one hundred points from last year to
- 25:31Speaker 2: four eighty eight, and you can just like the home
- 25:34Speaker 2: run last night was a game changing moment for the Twins.
- 25:38Speaker 2: They were down one nothing. You're wondering, is that gonna
- 25:41Speaker 2: be enough? Kevin Gosman's on the mound, he's so good,
- 25:45Speaker 2: and is that could be enough? And Jeffers comes up
- 25:47Speaker 2: and follows there was another Trevor Larnick walk. Trevor Larnick
- 25:50Speaker 2: and Austin Martin each have eighteen walks and are getting
- 25:53Speaker 2: on base all the time, but they're not being driven
- 25:55Speaker 2: in all the time. And Jeffers sits at home run.
- 25:59Speaker 2: It was a big park plug for them. And then
- 26:01Speaker 2: you know, Bucks and Homer and they took off. But yeah, so.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Right, Dan, you got you gotta make your pick. Now,
- 26:08Speaker 1: you gotta make your pick. I'm going right Jefers. Okay,
- 26:12Speaker 1: all right, Tyler, who's your pick to Homer tonight for
- 26:16Speaker 1: the twins.
- 26:18Speaker 3: So it's Friday night, the lights are going to be on,
- 26:21Speaker 3: you know, big TV game. Royce is gonna take one
- 26:24Speaker 3: of those left handed sliders and deposit.
- 26:27Speaker 4: It in the second deck. I think he's gonna he's
- 26:29Speaker 4: gonna get a hold of one. Join the party.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I like it. I'm gonna say, Byron Buston, even if
- 26:34Speaker 1: that's cheating, just because odds are right now anyway, Yeah
- 26:38Speaker 1: take it. So there you have.
- 26:39Speaker 4: It's checking Nelson Cruz in nineteen.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Jeffers, Royce, Lewis, Byron Buston Head over to.

- 27:26Speaker 1: All right, we're back.
- 27:29Speaker 2: It was not the longest commercial on the history of
- 27:31Speaker 2: commercials right there.
- 27:32Speaker 1: That wasn't It's supposed to be a minute long. But
- 27:34Speaker 1: that's okay. You're you're feeling it well.
- 27:37Speaker 3: And to your point, Dan, I noticed last night Jeffers
- 27:40Speaker 3: has been walking out to duffelbag Boy, so I think
- 27:42Speaker 3: he's fully bought into I'm gonna go get mine, So
- 27:46Speaker 3: maybe it's a whole mantra for the season.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Jeffers had the two run homer last night. I think
- 27:52Speaker 1: the the My favorite moment though, is what when you hit?
- 27:56Speaker 1: What I see now has gone in the scorebook as
- 27:58Speaker 1: a fielder's choice. It was certainly a choice at bottom
- 28:02Speaker 1: of the eighth to pop up in the infield that
- 28:04Speaker 1: fell Byron. Buxton was on first at the time, and
- 28:10Speaker 1: I forget if it was was it Okamoto the third
- 28:13Speaker 1: baseman who.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Picked it up and tried to throw it and just
- 28:16Speaker 4: came barreling in, Yeah.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Through it in the center field. Boxton went to third.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Twins ended up scoring two in the inning thanks to
- 28:23Speaker 1: part another error, So even the defense was going the
- 28:27Speaker 1: other direction last night. It was just one of those
- 28:28Speaker 1: nights where it all came together. But looking forward to
- 28:34Speaker 1: the weekend, three more games with the Blue Jays, guys,
- 28:38Speaker 1: heck give a way to start. But they also started
- 28:40Speaker 1: the Seattle series off pretty nice as well. Who knows,
- 28:44Speaker 1: it's one of those sports. But Simonon Woyd's Richardson on
- 28:47Speaker 1: the mound tonight, Dan, who's probably been the one starter
- 28:50Speaker 1: the Twins haven't gotten as much out of as they
- 28:52Speaker 1: would have hoped so far.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he's had a weird couple of starts. I mean,
- 28:56Speaker 2: he looked really good in that Kansas City start early on,
- 28:59Speaker 2: but there's just been some inconsistency there that and this
- 29:03Speaker 2: is a guy who has drived off being one of
- 29:06Speaker 2: their guys that you just don't see coming and gets
- 29:09Speaker 2: out there and gives you six or five and two
- 29:12Speaker 2: thirds and keeps them in the game every time, and
- 29:13Speaker 2: that hasn't quite happened the last few times out so
- 29:18Speaker 2: will be a big start for him, especially against his
- 29:21Speaker 2: former team. He and Austin Martin of course coming over
- 29:25Speaker 2: in the Jose Barrios trade in twenty twenty one. So always,
- 29:28Speaker 2: you know, guys get a little geared up extra for
- 29:31Speaker 2: that he had. He had the Mets also, like on
- 29:34Speaker 2: that road trip last time, and he originally was drafted
- 29:37Speaker 2: by the Mets and then traded to Toronto. So he's
- 29:41Speaker 2: getting a couple of his old teams here out of
- 29:43Speaker 2: the way early in the season. But they definitely need
- 29:47Speaker 2: him to find that level because you know, you look
- 29:50Speaker 2: at it and Mick Abel is gonna get back sooner
- 29:52Speaker 2: or later. And with Connor Prelip there, like, you never
- 29:56Speaker 2: know like that that if it keeps going that way,
- 29:58Speaker 2: Connor Prelip might just be too good to leave the
- 30:02Speaker 2: major league rotation for a team that needs as much
- 30:05Speaker 2: as you can get. And what that would mean for
- 30:07Speaker 2: whoever's struggling, that's that's an interesting question.
- 30:12Speaker 4: That's about to be in.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Tyler. Uh when I know, starting pitching is maybe a
- 30:20Speaker 1: different some somewhat different world. But when you when you're
- 30:24Speaker 1: fifth on the list, how does that can't feel too comforting.
- 30:27Speaker 2: For a player?
- 30:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you can see it coming, you know, it's one
- 30:30Speaker 3: like well, especially when as first up, like you don't
- 30:33Speaker 3: think about it because you're just like flying by the
- 30:35Speaker 3: seat your pants. But then you know, you settle in
- 30:38Speaker 3: and it's like, oh, so and so's coming off the
- 30:40Speaker 3: DL or so and so is almost done with their rehab.
- 30:44Speaker 3: You know, how do they look? And it definitely starts
- 30:48Speaker 3: to trickle into those thoughts.
- 30:50Speaker 4: You know, I think.
- 30:53Speaker 3: It's it's unfortunate, but at the same time, you know
- 30:55Speaker 3: you're the fifth guy, and you know you're the back
- 30:58Speaker 3: of the rotation. That's the always a kind of revolving door,
- 31:02Speaker 3: unless you're just on a loaded staff. And now to
- 31:06Speaker 3: this point they kind of overnight have a pretty good
- 31:09Speaker 3: staff with a rookie who's come up and kind of
- 31:12Speaker 3: settling in pretty well, he's got nasty stuff. You know,
- 31:15Speaker 3: nobody else is going anywhere. You know, you got it's
- 31:19Speaker 3: time to pitch, you know, and he's having these conversations
- 31:22Speaker 3: inside you know between whether it's his agent or pitching
- 31:25Speaker 3: coaches stuff like that. It's like, hey, Bud, like, you know,
- 31:28Speaker 3: this is where we're at. You know where you're at.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Like it's it's time to you know, put up or
- 31:33Speaker 3: shut up, you know. Unfortunately, and sometimes it's it's.
- 31:37Speaker 4: A good thing. You know.
- 31:37Speaker 3: You go down and you know, I got options plenty
- 31:40Speaker 3: of times and you go down. It pitches you off
- 31:43Speaker 3: a little bit and you focus in a little bit more.
- 31:45Speaker 3: You figure out like what's going on, and you'll have to, like,
- 31:48Speaker 3: for example, my debut gets shelled.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Go down there. I'm throwing an angry bullpen and Marty.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Mason was my pitching coach, and he's like laying down
- 31:56Speaker 3: in the bullpen looking up at the sky and listening
- 31:59Speaker 3: to me yell, and he's like, you need to calm down.
- 32:02Speaker 4: You know, you know how to pitch. You're doing this,
- 32:04Speaker 4: you know you have this stuff. You know.
- 32:06Speaker 3: He broke it down and simplified it sometimes, and it's
- 32:09Speaker 3: sometimes that's what needs to happen is just a little
- 32:11Speaker 3: bit of a shake and you're like, hey, calm down.
- 32:14Speaker 3: You didn't forget how to pitch overnight or anything else.
- 32:16Speaker 3: And it's just a weird, the humbling and settling experience.
- 32:20Speaker 4: In a way.
- 32:21Speaker 3: And you know, obviously you don't want it to happen.
- 32:24Speaker 4: I don't wish that on anybody.
- 32:25Speaker 3: But it's baseball, and the game continues no matter who's there.
- 32:30Speaker 3: And you know, that's we'll just have to see when
- 32:32Speaker 3: it comes back with the move is because it's you know,
- 32:35Speaker 3: at this point, regardless of what he does, he's been
- 32:37Speaker 3: for this outing. If it's five days from now, it's
- 32:39Speaker 3: still probably Hi.
- 32:40Speaker 1: That's the worst.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Part the and this is you you know that six
- 32:45Speaker 2: am flight way too well, that Rochester Express like you
- 32:50Speaker 2: like Zach, like that's what they called it, right, and
- 32:57Speaker 2: and here's.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Yeah, oh yeah, well there's only one flight there, so
- 33:00Speaker 3: like yeah, called up to Minnesota. You're set in an alarm
- 33:03Speaker 3: for four to go pitch a night game at seven,
- 33:06Speaker 3: you know, and there's you know four on the East
- 33:08Speaker 3: coast flying the central time. You know, there's one time
- 33:11Speaker 3: my hotel room wasn't ready. I had to go lay
- 33:13Speaker 3: in the locker room at the field. You know, it's
- 33:16Speaker 3: it's it's gritty.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and it is. And but you could always tell,
- 33:24Speaker 2: because like in eighteen and nineteen, you could tell when
- 33:27Speaker 2: Duff was getting the bad news. There's a door in
- 33:30Speaker 2: between the manager's office into the clubhouse that I know
- 33:34Speaker 2: that sound is permanently imprinted on my brain when it's
- 33:38Speaker 2: the door getting hit. Uh yeah, and like because dude,
- 33:41Speaker 2: like it was a real committment.
- 33:44Speaker 4: We were just in this.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean you're like, they're like, that was a
- 33:51Speaker 2: real thing and you had to get on a really
- 33:52Speaker 2: crappy flight to go back to Rochester and like, a
- 33:56Speaker 2: there's only one direct and if you don't catch a
- 33:58Speaker 2: director getting a nice connector through Detroit or Scharlare, and
- 34:02Speaker 2: it's like yeah, yeah, exactly, And so now at least
- 34:06Speaker 2: it's a little easier. And a lot of these guys
- 34:08Speaker 2: live directly across the street. And even if they're Saint Paul,
- 34:11Speaker 2: they're staying I wouldn't.
- 34:13Speaker 4: I would never do that. That's way too close.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Yeah, there's that building that that we're talking about cast
- 34:19Speaker 2: the Glare, and I think I bet you there's ten
- 34:22Speaker 2: guys that live in that building without a question, and
- 34:25Speaker 2: and a few of them are triple A guys and
- 34:27Speaker 2: just decided they wanted to.
- 34:28Speaker 4: Live over in the front office through their window.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Yeah exactly.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Tell you, how do you do a dentnis appointment during
- 34:37Speaker 1: the season. Well, you just try to try to go
- 34:39Speaker 1: for an off day or what.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Unfortunately that's when they end up happening. Yeah, I know
- 34:45Speaker 4: some guys I don't know. For some reason, Buck comes
- 34:48Speaker 4: to mind.
- 34:48Speaker 3: There's a few where it's like, you know, he had
- 34:50Speaker 3: to get one, like day of game, and so he'd
- 34:52Speaker 3: be like he'd pinch hit later.
- 34:54Speaker 4: But like when it's an emergency, you just got to go.
- 34:57Speaker 3: But yeah, unfortunately it's most of the time you got
- 34:59Speaker 3: a ruin an off date by getting your teeth drilled on.
- 35:03Speaker 4: So it's a it's not the best.
- 35:05Speaker 3: I mean, the team sets a lot up, a lot
- 35:07Speaker 3: of stuff for you, so it's like, hey, like I
- 35:09Speaker 3: need this, and it's like overnight, you know, magic happens,
- 35:13Speaker 3: you know, mixed going to the doctor in the real
- 35:14Speaker 3: world suck afterwards, but while you're in the big leagues,
- 35:18Speaker 3: it's it's at least the hassle of going to the doctor.
- 35:20Speaker 4: Isn't I thing.
- 35:21Speaker 1: It's like, what time do you have to be at
- 35:23Speaker 1: the park for like a standard night game.
- 35:26Speaker 3: Uh, when I was first up, I was getting there
- 35:29Speaker 3: around one ish, okay, one thirty at the latest, Like
- 35:33Speaker 3: I say that there's times you're there at till thirty
- 35:35Speaker 3: because you're just scared.
- 35:36Speaker 4: You're like, I need to be there looking like I'm
- 35:38Speaker 4: doing something, but you.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Know, and then you settle into the little bit later arrivals,
- 35:44Speaker 3: and then there's you know, it's always one of those
- 35:46Speaker 3: envy moments where you see the vet walk in at
- 35:49Speaker 3: like four for like four thirty VP, and you're just like, damn,
- 35:53Speaker 3: that's sick.
- 35:54Speaker 4: I can't wait, you know. But at the same time,
- 35:58Speaker 4: then you're panicked if you're not ready.
- 35:59Speaker 3: You're like, oh my god, yeah, you gotta go, but
- 36:01Speaker 3: or somebody is looking for you, like you'll get a
- 36:03Speaker 3: phone call where are you.
- 36:04Speaker 4: It's like I thought it was good to like show
- 36:07Speaker 4: up at three today, but I guess I wasn't.
- 36:09Speaker 1: So yeah, it's what military time on the phone, remember exactly.
- 36:14Speaker 4: Yeah, once you get comfany that somebody will let you
- 36:16Speaker 4: know you're getting comfy.
- 36:17Speaker 2: I saw Ricky Henderson when I was a kid, run
- 36:21Speaker 2: into the oak and call CEM ninety minutes before first pitch.
- 36:25Speaker 2: That is some all time epic. That is probably hit
- 36:30Speaker 2: probably hit home run in still two bases, Hall of Famer, amazing.
- 36:36Speaker 1: All Right, have some good story time. Simeon Woods Richardson
- 36:40Speaker 1: versus Patrick corbyin tonight Friday. Saturday is an afternoon game
- 36:45Speaker 1: connored prelip against Dylan Ceas and then Sunday in eleven
- 36:48Speaker 1: thirty five in the morning start Thank you peacock.
- 36:52Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the one.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Sunday that'll be Joe Ryan against the pitcher with the
- 36:57Speaker 1: best name in baseball, Trey Yes. Saturday, Yeah, he's back,
