• 1:01
We will be taking call-in guests all show long to ask the question: if your fairy fat mother appeared and granted you one wish for any existing fat bike available right now, which fat bike would you ask for?
• 1:15
We'll have this week's special guest, Olav Stenlod of Bike Life in Swedish Lapland. We reveal next week's call-in question, Fat Man and Ronin episode check-in.
• 1:30
We'll talk fat bike and plus bike news in the Fatty Farm field report and as always, we've got fat and plus links from all over the internets. Cheers, boys. Cheers, everybody. Cheers. Pa-chong. Pa-chong.
• 1:44
Gomez is going to Single Speed USA this weekend. [gentle music] He's just gonna have a little hams to- [laughs]... lubricate. Oh. If, uh, Benji calls,
• 1:59
we should have him be the designated drinker- Yeah... for the show. Yeah. They're, they're big on that up that way. All right. Let's take a quick break. When we return, [sips drink]
• 2:15
next week's call-in question will be revealed to all. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. And we are back. JK, what is next week's call-in question?
• 2:31
The question will be: what is your favorite aspect of fat-adventure-mountain-biking, or fat adventure mountain biking? Or just fat biking, but- In general- Yeah... when you're on an adventure doing your [snorts]
• 2:48
fat biking. [laughs] Well, yes. I think, I think I might be leading the witness there again. [laughs] Go out there. Okay. On there. Call, call in, uh, next week and we'll discuss this at, uh, 818-918-2453.
• 3:04
Once again, that's 818-918-BIKE. And you know we're here 8:00 to 9:00 Wednesdays. Yeah. And you, and- You'd think we told people this often enough, you know, people would actually call in, wouldn't you? I know.
• 3:17
But they can call in any time too and leave a message. Well- I think people are shy... yeah. Some people just don't wanna know how much, you know, don't want us to know how much fun they're having.
• 3:26
Or don't keep it all to yourself. Come on now. Hold on a second. We got Olav calling in, so everybody else who's listening- [laughs]...
• 3:33
give us a chance to talk to Olav from Sweden here, 'cause I think he's staying up pretty late. Yeah, it's like 3:00 in the morning where you are, right, Olav? Welcome to the radio program. Hey, guys.
• 3:44
Yeah, [laughs] it's quite, quite early in the morning. So- 2:00... yeah, so did you- Day over here... did you stay up late or did you wake up early? Uh, both.
• 3:53
I went, I went to sleep for a few hours with the kids and then, then I, I set the, the, the, the clock so I could wake up now. [laughs] Right on. Well, it's, it's an- Anyway...
• 4:04
it's an honor to have you calling in from halfway around the world or a quarter of the way around, anyway. Yeah. Yeah, this is pretty cool actually. I, I, I love it. Thanks for having me. It's awesome.
• 4:15
So first thing we gotta do is, uh, we have to congratulate you on your wedding, bro. Oh, thanks. Yeah. Thank you. It was- [laughs] It's been quite a summer. We- yeah, it's awesome. How, how...
• 4:27
so how are weddings in, uh, in Sweden? What do you... what's, like, are there traditions like smashing glasses for Greeks or do you have a, you know, your own kind of traditions? Uh, no, I don't think so.
• 4:38
We have just [laughs] our wedding was kind of special. We had burlesque strippers, clowns and, and, and people singing and dancing, so it was [laughs] quite awesome actually.
• 4:49
Olav- That's- Uh, invite me to your next wedding, Olav. [laughs] This way. Olav Stenlod, everybody. [laughs] Ladies and gentlemen. [laughs] I wanna party with you, cowboy. Well, it's your turn. [laughs] Yeah.
• 5:03
[laughs] Welcome to Sweden. So my man, tell us about your summit. Yeah. That, that's quite a, quite a big thing actually. We,
• 5:15
we're going up to the mountains, like, every year for, for riding our bikes, and it's quite far north. I mean, we live about 40 kilometers, I must think.
• 5:26
Yeah, we, we use the metric system, so, uh, uh, south of the Arctic Circle, and this is pretty far above the Arctic Circle, so it's a arctic summit.
• 5:36
And, uh, the idea is to invite people from all over the world to, to come ride with us, but this year was kind of, um, it's more of a demo version to, to see how we will get everything organized.
• 5:48
So there will be about, uh, 15, 20 riders this year, and next year we're going global.
• 5:54
So- Yeah, it, it sounds like it would be quite a, uh, a logistical, uh, you know, you gotta do a lot of logistical planning to make it happen, so that would seem like this, this year that's kinda what you're, you're staking out, so you can actually invite the world?
• 6:09
Yeah, precisely. We have this, uh, a friend of mine who is one of the organizers, Frederick. His name is Frederick Bruman and, uh, he has very good connection.
• 6:17
He's in the, he's in the, in the business, so to say, in the tourist business. And we have some agents working on the English market up there in Bjorkede- [laughs]...
• 6:26
and that he knows, and so we got very good contacts for, for doing all this, all this stuff, so we'll see. Well, right on. So are you going to have any sort of a advocacy angle to your summit? Will you...
• 6:41
You're obviously gonna go ride. You're, you're going to, uh, are you gonna do anything with reindeer? 'Cause it's Lapland. [laughs] Yeah, we might. Some reindeer hunting.
• 6:53
No, uh, I mean, it's, we, we're, the hotel- Did you say hunting or humping? [laughs] We do both. Yeah.
• 7:03
[laughs] No, but I mean, the hotel and the, and the huts that we can stay in is kind of located almost by the tree line, so it's, it's all big mountain area, so it's, it's no transportation. You're just on the mountain,
• 7:18
right off the door, basically. So it's awesome riding and very, very good for fat bikes.
• 7:24
I have, I've ridden both my old regular full suspension bike there and the fat bike, and let me tell you, the fat bike really enjoys, enjoys that, that area. Oh, man.
• 7:36
But there will be kind of guided ride, uh, guided rides and, uh, party at the night and, and dinners and barbecues outside and, yeah, well, it's kind of a festival.
• 7:48
We wanna make it like old school mountain bike tradition, just having fun riding bikes. Maybe some competitions. We're not ch- we're not sure yet, but, but it's just gonna be for fun.
• 7:58
Yeah, that's sort of, that's the feeling I get out of fat biking, and it's one of the things that attracted me to it, just like mountain biking did in like 1985, was that- Yeah...
• 8:07
it's a bunch of people out there having fun and, and you, you know, I just hope our, our little fat bike niche here doesn't explode like fat biking did or, um, [laughs] mountain biking did- Right...
• 8:17
and ruin it for everybody. So, you know, you- Yeah, I guess-...
• 8:20
you guys, you guys being way up there sounds like just the fact that you have to get there would weed out a lot of people who probably don't belong there in the first place. Yeah, yeah.
• 8:32
I just, I'm just reading the, this, uh, this book about the birth of mountain biking called, I think it's called Fat Tire Flyer. Mm.
• 8:40
Uh, and it's, it's really, it's, I mean, it's just the same thing that we're doing right now all over the world, just hanging out, riding bikes. It's amazing. I really like the fat bike community also.
• 8:50
It's, it's so global and, and so familiar in some weird way. I mean, it's, here we are talking [laughs] across the ocean. That's why- I mean, it's amazing...
• 8:59
that's why I always say it's the fat, worldwide fat bike tribe, man. We're all, we're all cousins. Well, I think one of the things- Yeah...
• 9:05
to me that's different about how fat biking has kinda spread worldwide, how we met you on the internet, we started, you know, communicating because of the website and this and that, that's something that didn't really- Yeah...
• 9:16
happen in the early days of mountain biking. You really, you had to be at events and you had to kinda meet people out on the trail, and, you know- Or at bike shops. Yeah, or at bike shops. We used to go to bike shops.
• 9:25
  Bike shops.
• 9:26
But now, you know, uh, there's people out there doing their own thing, and, you know, we've got this fat bike ambassador program we're, we're working on, and the reason we're doing that is because, you know, we don't, we're not actually in Australia right now or in Sweden, but we sure love to know what's going on.
• 9:42
Right. So, you know, people calling in from areas like you, it's just super awesome, and that never would've happened in the old days. It's true. No, exactly.
• 9:51
They had to put a lot of more effort also in to, to, to communicate and, and get people, and it... But the, the internet is amazing. I mean, I have people coming over here already from, from England.
• 10:02
I have this friend Kevin who's coming o- over like in two weeks, and he's been here three times, and we go ice riding out in the Archipelago, and, uh, we go mountain riding in, in the win- in, in the summer, so it's really amazing.
• 10:15
And a Spanish guy came up also for ice riding from, uh, just riding with us on the ice. So it's, the internet is amazing to connect people. Cool, man. You're, 'cause I know- Yeah... those stories because I read- Yeah.
• 10:27
[laughs] I, I read your blog. We've read those stories. [laughs] So. Hey, I got one question. Speaking of your blog, we spied that you were on French TV.
• 10:35
Is that, is that Lars that's staring at the camera as, as you talk in French? No, no, that's, it, that's not, no, that's not Lars. That's my friend Anders. Oh. [laughs] And also my friend Sven.
• 10:48
[laughs] Well, you know, I'm just trying to put names to faces from- Yeah... 2,000 miles away. It's a big group. I wanna be Lars's friend too. [laughs] He's a good guy. [laughs] All right, dude. Well, thanks- Yeah...
• 11:03
for calling in. Do you have a- Yeah, and, and staying up late or getting up early. Yeah. Do you have an answer to our question, this week's question?
• 11:10
Do you believe in your, first of all, do you believe that in your fairy fat mother? [laughs] Of, of course I do. I mean, you're Swedish.
• 11:18
You have to, like, know that gnomes, anything that breaks on your bicycle, it's because those damn gnomes, mushroom eating little buggers. [laughs] Yeah, yeah.
• 11:30
I, I have a good hand with them, so my, my bikes hold up pretty good. Yeah, mine usually do too, but every once in a while, man, it's like kablam. Once in a while.
• 11:41
[laughs] Yeah, I, I would most definitely go for the Bucksaw, the Salsa Bucksaw. It seems to be such an amazing bike. That was, uh- All right... when I was riding with George this weekend, he owns the bike shop.
• 11:56
I understand, I don't know if I can release numbers, but I'm gonna do it anyway, the 17th biggest Salsa dealer in the world is George. Dun, dun, dun, dun. And he said the same thing, Olav.
• 12:06
He said that he, if he had to sell every other bike he had, he'd definitely have a Bucksaw. For sure. Yeah. It was like hands down, like not even, it wasn't even a question. He's like, "Oh, yeah, Buck saw."
• 12:16
The carbon one- Mm-hmm... or the, or the aluminum one? Neither one. Neither. And, and they are awesome bikes. That is two votes for the Buck saw, so the future is now. Oh, do you have a tally sheet going yet?
• 12:26
Oh, I don't. Oh. We gotta get a tally sheet going. All right. We can do that. All right, Olof, awesome of you to stay up late again and, and call in.
• 12:33
We really appreciate it, and it's just, it's so cool talking to people from, from somewhere that's not here, even, even Petoskey- Yeah... Michigan or something, but- Oh, yeah... Sweden's even better. You like it all.
• 12:44
[laughs] Yeah. Awesome. Very, very, very cool to be on the show. And thank you, guys. And thank you for, for spreading the fat love all over the world. It's, it's... You're doing a great job. All right.
• 12:54
Well, you know, if you ever have insomnia at 3:00 AM on another Wednesday night, [laughs] feel free to call in. [laughs] Or, you know, Olof- It's always good to be on...
• 13:01
honestly, what you can do is call the same number even if we're not on the air.
• 13:04
And if you've got something that you wanna, you know, just report on, you can leave a voicemail and we'll work the voicemail into the show, 'cause I don't know if everybody [laughs] knows this, but we don't actually do this live.
• 13:14
Oh, interesting. 'Cause you're gonna listen to this on a Friday. Yeah.
• 13:17
And so I do have the opportunity during that, uh, that ensuing thing called Thursday to add in, uh, you know, just voicemails from you and anybody else that wants to call in, so feel free when you're at work and bored and- Yeah, absolutely.
• 13:30
Yeah. Right on, man. I'll, I'll- Swedish, Swedish drinking songs... I'll give you a call from [laughs] I'll give you a call from the summit, just a, a short report. That would be awesome, Olof. Thank you again. Yeah.
• 13:40
Thank you, man. Get some sleep, man. Get some sleep. [laughs] Yeah. I will. School and stuff work soon. [laughs] All right, man. Okay, thanks. Bye. Thank you. Thanks, man. See ya. Bye bye. All right.
• 13:50
Well, that was Olof telling us about bike life in Swedish Lapland. We'll be back right after this. Hey, this is Paul from Paul Components. You're listening to Fat Bike Radio. Have a great ride.
• 14:05
One taste and you'll agree you can't find a more fresh, flavorful, first-quality product than Texas Pete Hot Sauce. Texas Pete makes history with every batch.
• 14:16
Try mixing Texas Pete with melted butter as the dipping sauce for your next order of shrimp and you'll agree nothing wakes up food like Texas Pete. TexasPete.com. Welcome to the program. Caller from Decorah, Iowa.
• 14:32
Who do we have on the line? Uh-oh. [laughs] Hey, it's Benji. Benji. Benji. What's happening, man? How are you doing? What's happening, guys? Are you gonna be- We're good... are you gonna be our Decorah ambassador? Mr.
• 14:45
Decorah Ambassador. I do not take responsibility for that title, but I'll talk to you from Decorah. Uh, you- [laughs] You have so many people there that would make, that would make good ambassadors- [laughs]...
• 14:57
like, uh, like the captain could do, like, a segment, and- He could do-... Deke could do a segment, and [laughs] He could do interviews. I could do some impersonations if you want me to. Can you do Captain or Deke?
• 15:07
Who do you like better? No. Huh. No, I can't do either of them. [laughs] I can't do either. I haven't seen all of them lately, though. It's good. So we have a, we have a proposal for you.
• 15:16
I, I think that if you wanna- Okay... stay on the line for the whole show, you could be our designated drinker. [laughs] Do you currently have a libation in your hand? I will shortly.
• 15:30
[laughs] Now that I've been put on the spot, I've gotta go to the refrigerator. [laughs] It's the best thing I've heard all day.
• 15:38
Hopefully you have some sort of, you know, local fine brew and, you know, just count 'em off for us. Yeah. Oh, they got Toppling Goliath right in town. Right? I know. They, they make a good, n- good brew there.
• 15:49
What's that, uh- We do. We do. We've got, and, and, you know, things like that. It's funny enough, I think the coldest thing I have is a Lagunitas Daytime, so I'm just gonna go with that. There you go.
• 15:58
That's a good session, session beer. Yeah. I, I lived in Petaluma for a few years. Yeah. So that counts. Oh, really? Nice, nice.
• 16:04
Hey, before we, before we actually talk fat bike stuff, I just wanted to let the listeners know that Benji runs a magazine in the kind of, what do you call that?
• 16:14
It's not the driftless region where you guys are, but what- The driftless, yes, yes. Is it? Okay. Okay. Close enough. In northeast Iowa. Um, and the name of the magazine is? Inspired. Inspired. Inspired, yes. Yeah.
• 16:27
And, um, so- It's a very amazing... Really, my, my wife runs it, I should clarify. I, I do stuff for it, but, you know, she's, she's the brains and the brawn- Do you work in the mail room there? [laughs]... and so forth.
• 16:37
I do. I do. Sweep up... um- I've seen him load his car up and make deliveries of magazines- Yeah... around, you know, it's a, it's a pretty wide area you guys cover, right?
• 16:46
You know, I mean, you branch out from Decorah- It is, yeah... pretty far. Winona, La Crosse, all the way down the river. Yeah, it's fun. It's fun. It's a good area to go, you know, mess around in.
• 16:54
And, you know, I, I really, I, I love the magazine. Every time I'm in Decorah I pick one up and, uh, it's, you know, it's the type of stuff- That's very kind... that I'm interested in.
• 17:03
And maybe I'm just a weird guy, but I like- No... the magazine a lot. And, uh- It's an eclectic mix of artistic awesomeness, man... which is exactly what Decorah is. It's, it's like- Well-written and-...
• 17:12
that's what Decorah is. Yeah. An eclectic mix, mix of, of artistic beer can openings. [laughs] [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.
• 17:22
I love, I mean, you know, Benji, you know I've been coming there since, like, 1994 or something, and I love that place. Yeah. I, I make it as often as I can. Since I was a pup. Right? So- Absolutely...
• 17:32
so tell us about- Yes... fat biking in Decorah. What's, what's- What's going on there? What's new? What's happening? Well- What's the vibe on the street? You know, the- [laughs]...
• 17:40
the world continues to, to [laughs] the vibe on the street. Uh, the world continues to, to do what it does here in Decorah, which is beautiful. Um, you know, there are a lot of people out riding right now on our trails.
• 17:53
It's been beautiful the last couple weeks. It's been nice. It's actually getting a hair dry now almost, um, which, you know, is, is good for fun and fast riding, but it's been amazing.
• 18:04
For fat biking, uh, one of our local shops has had a killer rental fleet around here for the last, uh, year plus- So that's made it a lot of fun for a lot of new folks to get out on big wheels and- It's okay, tell, to tell us the name of the shop Yeah, it's not Deke, right?
• 18:20
Yeah, Decorah, Decorah Bikes. Yeah, it's not- Decorah Bikes... it's the not Deke shop in Decorah. However, there are two notes as long as we've touched on him already. Uh, Mr.
• 18:28
Gosen, as many of you know, Deke, um, is, uh, doing quite well these days.
• 18:33
His, his foot has gotten better for those of you who have followed his- Yeah, he just had an operation last year to try and restore a lot of mobility to his foot, which was pretty messed up, man.
• 18:43
Yeah, quite severe and, and they've, they've, it has worked out somewhat. So he's actually, I have heard, I have not seen with my own two eyes, that he's actually been on a bike or two lately, which is awesome. Right on.
• 18:52
That's good news- It's been a while...'cause- Uh, and I just went by his shop, yeah, on the way down here and I, I swear I'm pretty sure what I saw was the, uh, green and yellow Packer/John Deere, uh, uh, Moonlander Ops in the window.
• 19:07
Oh, right on. I could be wrong. Ah, all right. I also haven't, I haven't checked in on hell yet tonight to see if it's frozen over, but- [laughs]... that's what I thought I saw. So- Really?
• 19:16
Is he anti, is he anti-fat bike? No, he just wanted to wait until it was a fad. Oh, no, wait, not a fad, a, uh, a trend. Trend bike. Trend would be more- Or maybe that's just Sovereign selling his [laughs]
• 19:29
his John Deere Moonlander. That's, it, it's entirely possible. Yeah. Not, not impossible. No. Like, again, just not to pinpoint him on a map or anything- It's possible...
• 19:38
but, uh, Eric Sovereign of Surly lives in beautiful Decorah and manages to telecommute to work every single day somehow. He's a fireman there. Yeah, it's, it's- Yeah, it's a beautiful town folks... Eric's a fireman?
• 19:50
Yeah. Yeah. Isn't he a fireman? [laughs] He's a fireman. He rides bikes. Telecommuting as a fireman. [laughs] No, no. That's his Surly job. He's a volunteer fireman in Decorah. There we go. Yeah. Thank you.
• 19:59
Well, John is a fireman. I think he volunteers at Surly. I'm not really sure. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think we got it backwards. [laughs] All right, so are there- So anyway...
• 20:09
are there any events or races or anything like that coming up, um, that maybe we, uh, we should slide over there for?
• 20:17
It's a little bit, uh, to be determined still with the, uh, Decorah Human Powered Trails as of what's going on for fall, if anything's gonna pop up or not. The, uh, the Dirt Burger did take place.
• 20:27
That, that is a, uh, SOG sponsored event- Mm-hmm... if there ever were one. Kind of on the down low these days- It was... after some shenanigans and- It was... whatnot. [laughs] That was, that was really on the down low.
• 20:39
Um, but it was a solid little crew that came over to that. We went camping and, uh, fat biking and whatnot. And, um, I don't know, we're gonna have to see if anything shapes up for fall here or not.
• 20:49
There a little night race occasionally, on more than one occasion, uh, that usually pops up around October. But, uh, GHGT's been busy.
• 20:57
Lots of us are going in different directions with all sorts of stuff, and, uh, we'll see what happens.
• 21:01
Otherwise, um, you know you're gonna have to talk to Spinner at the upcoming events to see if, uh, we can resurrect another PWC this winter or not, whatever. Right on. No, that'd be awesome.
• 21:11
That, you know, obviously, uh, G Dog over there is gonna see Spinner at Single Speed USA this weekend so- Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm... we'll, we'll put the clamp all up on him. We'll talk to him. Excellent. Very, yeah, definitely.
• 21:24
Definitely. Oh, and speaking of single speeds, uh, I think word on the street is that Captain, uh, rented a motor home again, so make sure and trash that this weekend. There he goes.
• 21:36
[laughs] And, um- It's my anniversary so I won't be over there... maybe But Gomez will be there representing. Oh, we gotta go. Fantastic. And then Captain also told me he rented it for Gnome Fest, so- Really?
• 21:48
Um, there's, there's that. Uh- It's a good spot. That, that, that, gnome, where Gnome Fest is held now- We did talk about... it's actually, it's actually a good spot for- I think-... for a motor home or a hammock tent.
• 22:00
It is. [laughs] Or an airplane, but yeah. Either one. Yeah. I think, uh- Or a spaceship... Dave even slept in it last year. Oh, boy. Not sure if it was on purpose or not. We don't need to bring him up again.
• 22:08
[laughs] He drivelled all over the pillows? [laughs] Bring him along. All right, Benji. So, uh, getting back to the, getting back to Decorah Bicycles for a moment. Yeah.
• 22:17
Josie, Josie, Josie who's over there with Travis, uh, they are, they are working the heck out of stuff. She's got a, uh, fearless women's dirt ride going on Sundays. They've been riding a lot of fat bikes. Nice.
• 22:29
A lot of good stuff happening there. And people getting on different fat bikes, which is awesome. 'Cause you guys know Decorah's kind of another Surly hole, uh, as it, as it were. Per capita, I think we actually win.
• 22:41
I'm not sure. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. We might be like the top hole, so. There's a lot of places like that, though, you know? Yeah. It's very, very true. It's not a, it's not a bad place to be.
• 22:49
Hey, you know, wear that, wear that, wear that with honor, bro. Not, not with, like a- Yeah... an excuse. We do. Yeah. Well. No, totally. And- Surly Hole is a, sort of a trophy you win, so- Right, right.
• 23:00
Yeah, absolutely... it's the only thing. It's kinda like, you know- Yeah. [laughs] It's, it's kinda like- I thought you were talking about a bug hole. [laughs] It's kinda like Primus sucks, right? I mean, you know.
• 23:10
Right. Sorta the same thing. All right. Surly Hole, Primus sucks, kinda the same idea. [laughs] In the Surly Hole. [laughs] All right, Benji. We got, you would not believe how many people are stacking up in the queue.
• 23:21
Do you wanna have a final- People are starting to call because- Hey, we didn't even ask- We're giving a prize away... we didn't even ask him the question. Oh, hey. Ask him the question. What would it be?
• 23:29
Your fairy godmother, poof, comes in front of you- Your fairy fat mother, not godmother Oh, sorry, fairy fat mother. We don't say G, the G word on this show. [laughs] Appears before you, poof.
• 23:42
And she says- "Benji, you can have one- Well... fat bike, any fat bike that you want." What is it? It's really hard. [laughs] I would, I would love to ride the- That's rather personal statement. Go ahead. Brilliant.
• 23:56
I would love to try some of the new Salsa stuff. I would love to ride it. I would also like to check out, um, fairy fat mother, uh, uh, somebody told me I need to check out Wyatt from Across.
• 24:05
I don't know anything about him. Oh, wow. Right on. Nothing about him. Wyatt from Across. Otherwise, well, sort of, you know.
• 24:12
And then otherwise, you know, I would just go ahead and get a new Pugsley 'cause- Yeah, Wyatt's an awesome guy.
• 24:17
We've met him at several races on this side of, uh, Wisconsin And then your fairy fat mother would whack you with her wand and say, "Just one bike." All right, but that's fine All right, then give me an ice cream truck.
• 24:30
I went and wished for [laughs] another five ice- He said ice cream truck Stop. Oh- That's his one choice... so Wyatt was number two? Yeah. He only gets one though, bro. Well, we could do honorable mentions. All right.
• 24:41
All right. Cool, Benji. Well, hey, feel- Thank you, Rich... feel free to call in any time, man. We're gonna see who else is haunting our, um, uh, airwaves here. Okay.
• 24:50
Stop by, stop by Gnomefest or send the little lady over. We're gonna work on that. [laughs] My daughter or my wife, which one? [laughs] I'm gonna- Okay. Thank you, Benji. [laughs] Thank you.
• 25:04
[laughs] Talk to you again, man. Thanks for calling in. Cheers, boys. Bye. [laughs] What do I pick? Welcome to Fat Bike Radio. Who do we have on the line? Hey, John. It's Travis. How you doing? Hey. Travis.
• 25:19
Well, there's Travis. You've been lurking for a while, haven't you? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I was planning on being out on the trail tonight.
• 25:27
Work sucked so hard today, it just drained the ride right out of me, so back in the garage with another king size Tallboy King Street IPA, calling in to answer the question of the week, guys. Yeah.
• 25:40
What, give it, give it to us. If your fairy fat mother- [laughs]... gave you the choice of any fat bike, what would it be?
• 25:48
[pen clicks] If I had my choice of any fat bike, I'd have to go local and get myself a 907 Whiteout. Nice. All right. Right on. What kind of wheels is she gonna put on it?
• 26:02
Uh, I think that should have, you know, some Head Carvens being the only right thing. Nice. [laughs] All right. Boy, I haven't had the opportunity to really spend a lot of time on them, but they sure are light.
• 26:13
Yeah, yeah. And that's a good thing on a fat bike. I rode- Yeah, and from what I hear, set up, set up well tubeless, huh? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Oh, you actually have some, don't you? Yeah, I got- Yeah.
• 26:22
[laughs] I do. And I've ridden Bill Fleming's 22-pound Whiteout with Head wheels, with ENVE seatposts, bar and stem, just tricked out light. Well, that's, that's what you get to do when you own a company. Right.
• 26:40
You get to buy the coolest stuff. Like I was gonna say, just like- And then it trickles down... the top guy at a top bike shop should have, man. And it, it rode like a feather.
• 26:49
It rode- You know what I ride for a seatpost? What do you ride? 1995 Dean titanium that I bought brand new in 1995. [laughs] I think I have a slew of, uh, Thompson seatposts.
• 27:00
But it's, it's the size that that seat tube is. I'm like, "Hey, that's nice that a 27.2, I can just put this thing in that I've had for 20 years." Well, that's still nice. And it still, it's still an awesome post.
• 27:09
That's why people want... Another reason- I mean-... a hidden reason to race bikes... so Travis, we got another caller on the line. Looks like an Iowa caller. Can we give them a little howdy doodly doodly?
• 27:19
You just, you just be our designated drinker, 'cause we got rid of Benji. [laughs] Uh, I got, I got the job covered, boys. Tag. Tag in, Tag. Tag out. Tag in. [laughs] Tag team drinking representation. All right.
• 27:33
Who else is m- listening to this travesty of a radio show? It's- Hey, it's the Spinner. Oh, no shit. [laughs] Yeah. Spinner Ryerson, ladies and gentlemen. I th- I think we were just talking about you- [laughs]...
• 27:46
in a, in an insignificant way to Benji, weren't we? [laughs] Yes, that little unicorn boy. I heard everything you said. [laughs] I had no idea that he was a- He's a unicorn lover...
• 27:57
I had no idea he was a little unicorn boy. All right. So the question everybody- Oh, yeah... the question everybody wants to know, Spinner, is are we gonna have a PWC this year? Probably.
• 28:08
[laughs] I mean, I thought when I handed it off that somebody else was gonna take it. Maybe I, I don't know. It's definitely, if there is one, it will not be on the Fat Bike Turkey weekend this year.
• 28:17
That's probably a good call. Yeah, probably. 'Cause I would've made it l- I would've done that. That would've been a great two-weekend thing. For sure. Turkey one weekend and, and- I know...
• 28:26
and bookend, bookend it with that and something else. Be like, bam. And hey, you know Sven- Right... and I can help with this too. Yeah, we can do some, um, helping. We're down. We wanna, we wanna support that event.
• 28:36
It's absolutely my- All right... favorite fat bike event ever. And, uh, you know, so- [laughs] I would, uh- All right. Yeah... I would be honored to help in some small and insignificant way. I'll bring the potato salad.
• 28:52
[laughs] It's n- uh, no dairy. It won't spoil. It won't turn in the sun. I'll tell you, it's the best ever. I'll make- Just bring it in a bag... it's gonna be freaking 10 below zero. Yeah.
• 29:01
There is no spoiling of anything for months. I'll make it with yogurt that I bake at home. [laughs] Oh, Lord. Oh, I can't roll with that. When we were...
• 29:11
Hey, hey Spinner, we were talking to Benji, and everybody here is just a little bit, um, I don't know, high on life or something. We were inspired, honestly. From- Inspired. In- inspired, we were.
• 29:23
[laughs] With a [laughs] inspired, parentheses, D. That's right. That's how it works. So- That's a little magazine...
• 29:30
Spinner, I, I d- didn't get a, and I don't have a, an, uh, umpire or referee shirt, but I have white tape. Oh. But I ha- I have a- I know what's coming... I have white tape- It would be-... and a black shirt.
• 29:44
[laughs] Would that work? [laughs] Yeah, we can just, uh, put black. How white are you? We just put black stripes on you? Oh. No? [laughs] No way. Yeah, that's the Big Bear. [phone rings] Yeah. Oh, God.
• 29:58
Michael, Michael, what are you doing? That wasn't me. [laughs] That wasn't me. Somebody got excited about a Super Gomez. Oh, geez. [laughs] They, their radio waves can't handle it. Yeah, for- There's too much sex here.
• 30:13
Yeah, we could just shave stripes into me. That would work. That would be awesome. Oh. That would work. Yeah, we could do that, you and Chewy. We can do it to both of you. [laughs] Oh, yeah.
• 30:23
Like, like, like back to back twins, Chewy's and Gomez So Spinner- Don't come into each other and be Velcro. Yeah.
• 30:32
What do you think of the- I've been meaning to call in for the last few, uh, weeks, but I always just- Yeah. Last week- Sorry... last week Chewy made it up for everybody that hasn't called in for a while.
• 30:42
[laughs] I know. [laughs] So, so he answered our question last week, Spinner. Can you answer our question this week? Oh, yeah. Uh, yeah. So can I have a very fat MILF? [laughs] Sure. [laughs] A very fat MILF.
• 30:58
[laughs] I just thought that would be more... But is she related to me? Hold on. [laughs] [laughs] I need to know that. Is that how they do it?
• 31:04
Is, is that how they do it in Iceland or where- whatever Nordic country- Yeah, yeah... you're from? [laughs] Uh, yeah, I, well, I don't know. Where, where are you at when I write this script?
• 31:15
[laughs] [laughs] With goals like that, my friend- Yeah... I'll be texting you. Well, I'll tell you what- "Who do you think I should use in this?" Yeah, that's true. We should, we should have Olive. That's a good idea.
• 31:25
We should have Olive on the script, too. He's got a pretty- [laughs] Olive. He's got a... You know, maybe it's a Scandinavian thing. I don't know. Dude. That was awesome having him- Anyway... on the show, bro. Yeah.
• 31:33
Olive, Olive's- He sounded cool... good man. And I'm glad that you guys let me listen while I'm on as well. I have a call in place.
• 31:39
Yeah, that's like an automatic thing that the, the pretty lady with the nice voice, she lets you sit there as long as you want. My favorite- Yeah, y-... girlfriend, Louise.
• 31:48
So seriously, do you, do you have a dream fat bike, or are you pretty well set? What do you think? Well, yeah, I was thinking about that.
• 31:55
I mean, for the type of riding that I do, and, you know, I'm not focused on having to going super fast, I'm focused on having fun. I like my Pugsley. I was thinking about that.
• 32:05
I don't like bikes that can't be single speed. What if you need to put, you know, special shit on there? I like to be able to just single them out. Um, yeah, I, I like my Pugsley. Right on.
• 32:16
I'd like to go with a newer Pugsley. I mean, there's a lot of cool stuff out there, but I'm not planning- I like the new purple freaking single speed one, dude. Yeah. I, that's a good looking. Yeah.
• 32:25
That's a, that's a good representation. Yeah. It's not exactly a throwback, but I, I have a couple of friends with that bike, and every time I see them I'm like, "Ah, that's a badass looking bike."
• 32:36
Hey, uh- It's metallic... I, I, guess who I talked to this week, Spinner? Dave- Oh. Dave, Dave Wiseman. What do you think Dave told me, Spinner? Is he coming up? Is he gonna sneak up, single speed? He's gonna try.
• 32:49
I know he wants to see, you know, what, what's going on up there and, and he said, uh, "Boy, I sure would like to build a bike for Spinner," I believe is what he said. He did.
• 33:00
I saw that really nice, fancy baby blue one he had at, uh, Bob Villa's down at the nab with, um- Well, how's, uh, how's O- Yeah, he's talking- How's O'Gara liking his? I think, uh, he's, he's beating on it pretty good.
• 33:14
He loves it. He's got kind of a, he's got a 27 and a half fat. He's got kind of a weird deal going on, but he's a little guy, so. [laughs] He's stick and roll little fatties. [laughs] Yeah. All right, man.
• 33:30
Well, uh, believe it or not, our queue is just packed with people today. Let it roll, man. You wanna hang, or you wanna, you wanna bro... Oh, who's opening a beer? [laughs] Oh, oh, what, what, is that bad that I do?
• 33:40
Wrong? Am I still here? Yeah, we got Travis. Yeah. We got Travis lurking in the background if Spinner wants to hang out. [laughs] Let's just have a big party. Two designated drinkers. Yep. [laughs] All right, look.
• 33:52
We're gonna, we're gonna bring another caller in on this here radio program. We have Travis and Spinner hanging out, too. Who's our newest member of the Fat Bike Radio- [laughs]... program caller in club?
• 34:07
[laughs] This is Old Bear down in, uh, in, in the Ozarks. Old Bear, what's up, dude? Hey, we haven't heard from you for a few weeks, brother. What's happening? Oh, been in and out of the hospital, but I'm a lot better.
• 34:21
I'm back on the bike and dropping pounds like grease, so. Nice. That, that happened since I started riding my bike again, too. [laughs] I know. Me too. I mean, they, I had a mi- I had a mini stroke.
• 34:37
I had what they call a TIA. Don't ask me the technical term, I can't pronounce it. Oh, man. I like all chicks named Tia. [laughs] Sven, Sven's sucking chicks now.
• 34:48
They said that, the day I got out they said, "If you're feeling up to it, ride the marks." Next day was only gonna be like 75. Nice. It's gonna be a beautiful day, and I went out and I rode.
• 34:59
Didn't even break a sweat hardly. But sure felt good to get back on the bike after laying there in the hospital bed. Oh, I know that, man. I know that feeling, bro. I've, and I've had some stints in the, in the joint.
• 35:13
Uh, so being in the hospital is, uh, akin, I, I make it akin to being in prison, man, and you're just stuck there. Horrible food. Eh, the food isn't bad in our hospital, but- Really?
• 35:26
[laughs] So Old Bear, tell us, uh, do you have a, do you have a answer to our, to this week's question? Oh, yeah. All right. Lay it on us. Shirley Moonlanders, what, what my fair, my fairy godmother could bring me.
• 35:40
Killer. So you want the, uh- I'm in love with the Shirley Moonlander... you want the champagne, or do you want the, uh, John Deere paint job? John Deere paint job. [laughs] Killer. For me, I love black bikes, though.
• 35:55
Oh, me too. I wish it was in black. I like, I'm kinda like Henry Ford. Any b- [laughs] Uh, I can have my bike in any color as long as it's black. As long as it's black. Yeah.
• 36:05
Well, you can, you can actually get it in three c- [laughs] You can get it in three colors. [laughs] Black, ebony, or charcoal. [laughs] Well, Old Bear, we gotta, we, we have a full queue of, of, uh, of callers.
• 36:17
Thanks for calling in, man. Unbel- unbelievably, a bunch of idiots doing a radio show, and people wanna call us for some reason. But, uh, thank you for calling. I'll call a little more often, guys. Yeah. Right on. Yeah.
• 36:27
I'm glad you're feeling better. I'll call a little more often, 'cause- Our, our group is growing to six people down here. [laughs] He's nice. We have six listeners. [laughs] He's our, he's our fat assador from- Yeah...
• 36:38
from, uh- Dallas... Ro- Rolla, Missouri. Rolla, Missouri. Yeah. So we have another fat ass- bassador- Fat bass... fat bassador down there. And, uh, that Travis, he's, he's lurking, and Benji's gonna kinda be...
• 36:52
So we're, this is starting to become a thing. Bass fishing. Bass assador. Water, fast, bass [laughs] fishing. [laughs] She show, she sure, shure, shure. Well, I'll let you guys go and get to the other calls.
• 37:04
All right, man. All right. Thanks a lot, Old Bear. Feel better, Old Bear. Man, I love- Oh... m- I love that guy. He's, he's like an inspiration. Oh. Totally. Oh. Who's next? [laughs] What the hell was...
• 37:19
Is that the Milwaukee- Hello? All right, we got a new caller. Uh, you know, Travis and Spinner- Hey... are still lurking. Gomez, JK, and I are in the studio being idiots, and, uh, we have a new member of the tribe.
• 37:31
This is Ronsta. Ronsta. Ronsta. Dude. That, that was a nice picture of you being all hardcore and whatnot. [laughs] So it was a fun weekend. So just to, uh, fill in- Yeah...
• 37:45
our listeners, we have Ron Stewicki on the phone. He's a Milwaukee... It's not, uh, what's... It's not W- Wauwatosa. What's the, what's the- Wawannisa. [laughs] Waukesha. Waukesha. That's Waukesha, I believe.
• 38:00
There you go. I love Waukesha, that girl. No, uh, and he just won another in... How many have... How many Wausau 24 solo 24-hour men's open titles do you have, Ron? Five? Uh, this is the fourth one. Fourth one. Wow.
• 38:18
Yeah. That's a, that's a 24-hour off-road race at some pretty awesome trails. Yep, rocky. And you do that solo. Yeah. I mean- Yep. And can talk legibly afterwards. I've, I've- [laughs]...
• 38:32
seen him right after he's finished a couple times. He's just like, "Oh, yeah, hey, Gomez. How's it going?" [laughs] All right. Really. Hey, Ron, I gotta, I gotta- He, he can talk now... I c- I actually...
• 38:41
[laughs] All right, I have a challenge for Ron. Ron, are you, are you up for a challenge? Sure.
• 38:46
Well, on certain years, depending on which weekend it falls, some years the River West 24 and the Wausau 24 are on the same weekend, except that the River West 24 starts at 7:00 PM Friday and ends at 7:00 PM Saturday, whereas the Wausau 24 starts at noon on Saturday.
• 39:04
Is that right? Uh, 10:00 AM. 10:00 AM. 10 AM. Okay, and it ends at 10:00 AM on Sunday. So here's my thing.
• 39:10
Do the River West 24 and get somebody to drive you up and do the last 12 hours of the Wausau 24, and then you can do, like, 400 miles or whatever. You could just do more miles. [laughs] It would be awesome. And hours.
• 39:22
And hours, yeah, 36-hour- That would be a lot of fun... a 36-hour race.
• 39:25
You know, like, guys in NASCAR and IndyCar racing have done that, where they'll, they'll run the Indy 500 and then they'll jump to the Coca-Cola 600 later in the day in their Learjet and stuff. Right, and helicopters.
• 39:36
Yeah, and helicopters and whatever. It'd be like, well, you know- An Uber craft... it would just be kind of a kick-ass thing to do. Yeah.
• 39:40
[laughs] I, I've, I've been dreaming about doing it for- By next year, yes, Uber will have helicopters and I'm ready for this.
• 39:46
[laughs] If I didn't, if I didn't, if I didn't need sleep after the River West 24 in a big way- [laughs]... I would try and make this happen myself, but I'd just be a piece of Jell-O.
• 39:54
[laughs] That'd be fun, and that, yeah, that would make Wausau a lot tougher. [laughs] The River West is like a walk. Well, I mean, after four wins you have to, you know, handicap people somehow. Oh, yeah.
• 40:07
Well- Hey, oh, I just did 24 hours. What did you guys do? I was about to ask if I could do not. [laughs] Apparently not. Oh. [laughs] So Ron won this year on an ice cream truck. Stop me when I'm passing by. Passing by.
• 40:21
Ooh, my, my. These guys- I'm the ice cream man... these guys always sing that song every time I say ice cream truck. Oh. It's 'cause it's one of my favorite DLR tunes. Isn't that amazing?
• 40:31
[laughs] So, so tell us your mindset behind rocking an ice cream truck with a Bluto this year at the, uh, solo- Well-... 24 hours at, uh, Wausau.
• 40:42
Um, la- well, last year I did it on a rigid single speed, and, um, that, that was hard enough.
• 40:48
So this year I haven't been able to ride as much as I'd like to, and I said, "Screw it, I'm just gonna pack up the ice cream truck and the Pugsley for backup, and, uh, go up there and have fun on a nice cushy bike."
• 41:01
Uh, I, I borrowed a Bluto for the, uh, weekend and, and loved it. It, it was a blast. So, um, super comfy. They built some new trail up there, so there were some rough sections and- Mm-hmm...
• 41:14
it was just really good having, having fat tires, and a suspension fork, and a bunch of gears for once, so it was fun. What tires did you run? Uh, just the, the 3.8 Nards on the, on the 80 mil rims. Killer. Killer.
• 41:30
Did you hear... I've, I remember riding there. I've, I've done a 24-hour race there in a six-person team on fat bikes, and I just remember my tires- I remember that...
• 41:40
tires going chuff, chuff, chuff on all those big rocks, but just rolling over everything. Well, it was so much fun riding up Ho Chi Minh and all that stuff. Yeah, yeah.
• 41:52
The, the tires made enough noise that, that people kinda got out of the way when they heard me coming down the hills a little too, so.
• 41:59
[laughs] So, so a- a- when it was all said and done, what was the total, like, mileage? Well, you rode a long ways. Um, I think it was, uh, around... They were 12-mile laps. Um- And you did 15, right?... I did like 15.
• 42:14
It ended up, like, 160 mile. Um, I gotta give props to Andrew, the guy who won the actual fat bike category, 'cause he actually went a lap farther than I did. Really? Uh- Very cool. Yeah, yeah. So,
• 42:29
um- Well, why the hell do we have you on the line? [laughs] Sorry, I didn't even know. Do you know, do you know Andrew's number, Ron? [laughs] Just kidding. We know Ron pretty well. Ron's, Ron's the best.
• 42:41
So Ron, do, do you know this week's question? Do you wanna weigh in on the, uh, if your fairy fat mother could give you any fat bike, having just won the Wausau 24, what would you pick?
• 42:53
I, I, I mean, I love my single-speed Pugly a ton. It's, it's still a blast to ride. The ice cream truck was super fun, but I think a Bucksaw would be really kick-ass on some- Yeah... some, uh, terrain like Wausau.
• 43:07
So- Ah, Blue Saw... I got to ride one, uh, at a demo a couple months ago and really fell in love with it. So, um, the, the full suspension fat is, is a whole nother level that people gotta try it. Yeah, they do.
• 43:20
Yeah, so I have a question for you. As, uh- Yeah... one of the more level-headed bike shop pro and killer long-distance riders, what's your take on plus bikes, 29 plus, B plus, 27 plus, 26 plus? I, I like 'em.
• 43:39
Uh, I had a Krampus for a while. Mm-hmm. I actually ended up selling it to a coworker and, and just went full fat with the ice cream truck this year. Yeah. Um, it's a blast.
• 43:49
I really, I'm glad the industry's going that way. Um, I think for, for three-season riding, it's, it's the way to go. Um- Have you ridden a Stache? So,
• 44:01
uh, just briefly for about 10 minutes a couple months ago, but- Yeah... a few guys at the shop here got 'em and, and rave about 'em. So- I, I rode that bike- Um-... and that, that bike r- rides awesome in the ice.
• 44:14
I don't say much good about Trek, but when I do, it's about the Stache. [laughs] Oh, Stache is- Yeah. [laughs]... is badass.
• 44:20
I, I wanted to have you on because I think that's so cool that you won the solo 24-hour men's race on an ice cream truck with a Bluto and a 1 by 10 drivetrain because you were just wanted...
• 44:33
You just hadn't ridden enough, and you just wanted to take it easy and ride a cushy bike. [laughs] That's- Yep. [laughs] There's- Oh, congratulations, man. I, I...
• 44:44
If, if everybody could be that laid back, I think there'd be a lot more fast people in the world. [laughs] Hells yeah. [laughs] Uh, you know, that's the only reason we should ride bikes is to have fun, so- Hell yeah.
• 44:55
Well- You know, make, make 'em as fun as you want, and fat bikes are a ton of fun. Right on. That's for sure. All right, Ron. We gotta... Actually, we got... I don't know where all these callers came from. Oh.
• 45:06
But, uh, got a couple other folks on the line. Yeah, thanks a lot, guys. Give us, give us a call anytime. We're really...
• 45:11
You know, we appreciate when people call in, especially people who are doing, like, awesome stuff like you and just tell us about, you know, how fat bikes are great, how you're great- [laughs]... how we're great.
• 45:22
You can tell us how great we are, too. Hook us up with those Badger Bike guys. Yeah, we haven't talked to those guys yet. Oh, yeah, yeah. I'll talk to Julian Noel, try and get him, get him on here.
• 45:32
Yeah, Julian, we've talked in the past. Yeah, a few weeks ago. It's just we never... There wasn't...
• 45:36
W- maybe not good follow-up on my end, maybe not good follow-up on their end, but we just haven't followed up yet, so... [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, I th- I think they're brewing up some new stuff for this fall, so- Right on...
• 45:47
I'm excited to see what they have coming out. We are, too. We have a whole new website. Yeah, we do? Yeah. Yeah. The Plus Bikes thing? Yeah, yeah. Is that, did we start that yet? [laughs] Yeah, we did. Right on.
• 45:59
We're good at shit like this. See you, Ron. Thanks for calling in, man. [laughs] All right, Ron. Hey, keep up the great work, guys. Thanks. Yep, talk to you later. [laughs] This is work. Yep, bye.
• 46:09
[laughs] Yeah, it isn't it? We're doing work. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. All right, so we still got Travis on the line, but now we have another friend from Alaska who's on the line. Thank you for waiting.
• 46:24
What else, Travis? Yeah, this is Wakeesha Johnson. Wakeesha Johnson. What's up, my man? Yeah. Don't you remember me, Gomez? [laughs] Wakeesha Johnson. I had his name that I would remember.
• 46:38
It sounds like maybe a Zach Brown yanking my deli, or who do I have on the phone? Yeah, this is Tupper up in Alaska. Oh. [laughs] Zach's up in Alaska. Tupper's up in Alaska. We got Travis from Alaska on the line.
• 46:53
Yeah, but Tupper's, Tupper's- It's an Alaska show right now... Tupper's in America's freezer. All right. Fairbanks. Fairbanks. Yep, yep. Yeah, or what, what- Yeah, Wakeesha's not a real common name up here.
• 47:04
[laughs] Well, it's- It's usually very sick over here. [laughs] It's, it's k- it's kind of a suburb here in, uh- [laughs]... in Milwaukee.
• 47:15
Did you know that back in the old days it was, like, a very famous, like, spring of water was there- Yeah... and there was, like, hot baths, and it was a, a resort. So Tupper, my man. Yeah.
• 47:27
What's, what, why- Yeah, what is it, yeah... why, why isn't there a fatbike.com sticker on your fucking work desk so I can get, get some, get some placement on your Instagram feed, my man?
• 47:39
[laughs] Yeah, that's what we need. You sent, you sent me, you sent me black ribbon patches, which I have yet to put on my new frame bag, but you didn't send me any stickers. Oh. Well, let me remedy that.
• 47:49
It's your damn fault then. [laughs] Oh, hoisted by your own petard. [laughs] I, [laughs] I knew it was my fault. It's always your fault. Yeah, foot in mouth. [laughs] Are you ready to spill the beans on, uh...
• 48:04
Let me, uh, let me just put my wig on and be your fairy fat mother. [laughs] Nice. Tupper, I grant you one fat bike. Well, there's definitely some ones that I could have. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the one.
• 48:15
So I'm gonna say it again, and I, I think I called in last week, too. Like, I want an 11 Nine Industries downhill fat bike so bad. All right. Not, it's like the...
• 48:27
It's not the one bike to have if you're to have one fat bike. But, like, God, that's such a wet dream, that bicycle. I want that thing. [laughs] What, what color?
• 48:36
That thing- As much as, as much as you're espousing about it for the last couple weeks, maybe we could get Lance to hook the hell up on you. I know. What, what color are you? They come in, like- Yeah, I know...
• 48:44
they come in, like, all the citrus colors, yellow, green- Yeah... and orange, right? I want yellow. Yellow? I want yellow Red on green Yeah... yellow, blue, purple What's that new bike that Salsa came out with?
• 48:54
Is it the, the Sausage Wrangler or something? What's that one called? [laughs] Which, which? From 11 Nine? The Donkey Hustler or something. What is it? [laughs] Oh, the new Salsa. It's the Pony Rustler. Oh, yeah.
• 49:07
What's it called? The Pony- Oh, the Pony Rustler, okay. Yeah. Okay. I thought it was Donkey Hustler or something. [laughs] I don't know what it was, but, uh, [laughs] that thing's pretty cool too.
• 49:16
Like, not, like, it's not fat bike, but, uh- Right. Hey, we d- we have this website called plusbikes.com, and, uh, we don't have a radio show for that yet.
• 49:24
But we, we talk about- Probably oughta, probably oughta remedy that [laughs] situation. We totally talk about Plus Bikes on this show.
• 49:28
If only you had a radio show you could plug that website on, man, you'd be in business. I know.
• 49:33
So an 11 Nine Haraxadaxabaxabaxaxatachion, whatever, is- That's a six-inch DH with, uh, three-inch wide tires or 3.8s or whatever they're running. Yeah. That'd be a pretty sweet setup for downhill bikes. Yep.
• 49:47
I think that would be something I'd s- sure like to try. It'd be like going to Great America and going on the best roller coaster. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. True dat.
• 49:55
All right, well, we're getting a pretty- What's a good word for it? I don't even know. We- I knew you were a f- flat brim hat wearing, white sunglass, downhill fat biker.
• 50:05
[laughs] Sorry, I'm kinda paraphrasing the great Eric Sovereign there. Yeah, you were. Yeah, I was. Yeah. All right, man. All right. Well, I won't take any more of your guys' precious time up.
• 50:19
I'm sure you got other people. Thanks, Tupper. Awesome of you to call in. Yeah, thanks, guys. Hey, any, any, any week you feel bored and you're not, uh, don't have your finger sewed to the table, give us a shout.
• 50:30
Right, right. I will, I will, I will do that, sir. All right, have a good evening, gentlemen. See ya, Tup. 10-4, 1-9, over. Later. So now all we've got left is Spinner and, uh, well, Travis. Travis.
• 50:44
'Cause he's the designated drinker. Right. Right, right. Guys, any final thoughts? 'Cause we gotta wrap this bad Oscar up or I'm gonna be up until Saturday morning trying to get this ready to go. Grandma.
• 50:56
We haven't even gotten through most of the stuff- Uh-... a lot of the stuff... I'm sad. Nothing. Nothing from me. Heading to Chewy's. SingleSpeed USA this weekend. Thanks. Spinner Rierson is, uh- Yeah...
• 51:07
one of those, one of those guys. Can you hear me? Yeah, I- Can you hear me? Yeah, yeah, we hear you. Can you hear? Yeah. [laughs] Oh, okay. Yeah, chill out. [laughs] He always just talks to me in the third person.
• 51:18
[laughs] Yeah, sometimes it's on the phone when he's not actually even on the air, but right now we're, we're, we're not live, but we're on the air. Kind of interesting.
• 51:25
[laughs] Yeah, driving, driving back from, uh, South Dakota. Gonna go right to Chewy's place, up to the airport, pick up some Texas people, some Arizona people, sort out all the drunk cyclist stuff and the
• 51:41
after blues stuff. Wow. And get ready for a, a shitshow weekend. Well, we're gonna add a big helping of, uh, Gomez up on top of the shitshow right there.
• 51:52
I'll be up there with all my, with all my, with all my fid brethren, all the bike pack ribbon Chicago people. Mm-hmm, that haven't been excommunicated yet. [laughs] Julio and- We're gonna pack that place.
• 52:04
I'm, I'm a little worried about how many people we got coming up. I d- how big was, was that Gnome Fest, eight, nine that was up there? We had- It was-... between- 250... 220 and 250, yeah. You know- That's awesome...
• 52:17
here's, here's what I say to that, is how's that going for you? How's that worrying working out for you? [laughs] Dude, sick. [laughs] It's gonna be a bit stressful.
• 52:33
[laughs] I've got, I got insurance forms in the mail today- [laughs]... uh, or emailed today, so we've been, [laughs] we've been pushing it, but I think the final's gonna be a good time.
• 52:43
I think, uh, roller derby is gonna be a good decider. I don't know who's gonna- Decider... be so far in the decider. I am the decider. Yeah. I'm a- Decider Gomez. Gonna be a referee decider. Uh-huh. Yeah.
• 52:54
I'm gonna be the decider-er. -er. -er. Yeah. [laughs] Have, have you Googled how roller derby works yet? Because I haven't. Dude, I used to watch it. [laughs] Was that flat track?
• 53:05
I, I've, I've been live- Is it, is it flat track? Isn't Natalya Metalz- Is it? I don't know... a, a, a jammer? I, I know that you- I would believe it'd be flat track.
• 53:13
You blow, you blow the whistle, they start, and then they shoot their jammers out, and the jammers, they... [laughs] Jesus, son. [laughs] Jamming and shooting? [laughs] I almost just spewed all over the place. Dude.
• 53:28
So- Ti- timing is everything. [laughs] So the jammers have to go- Is there any lube?...
• 53:33
all the way around the track and catch up, and the jam goes for, like, a minute, and in that minute, the number of the other team that they pass by- Yeah... is the score. That's it. Yeah.
• 53:45
That's a pretty simple thing when you say it like that. That's how it works. It's fun, yeah. Yeah. And there's a, there's a jam- I was just asking if it was flat track or the ramp track one...
• 53:51
there's a jammer on, there's a jammer on each team. They l- and they wear, like, a helmet that has an X on it, and the other two people just wear regular helmets. Yep.
• 54:01
And they usually get, like, one person on each side and just fling the shit out of them- Right... right through there. Right. Yeah. Okay. How do you do that on bikes? Oh, it's gonna be on- It isn't gonna be on bikes.
• 54:11
Oh, there you go. Roller skates. It's gonna be on roller skates. [laughs] Uh- It's all coming together now. Right... they're gonna need, uh, some people with roller skates. I thought it was a metaphor. Okay. Yeah. Nice.
• 54:21
No, we're gonna do that, and we're gonna... There'll be a lot of, uh, other little events. There might be some, uh, tour cycling and another round of the deciders, but we're gonna work on that one to get there.
• 54:30
Uh, Burnsy from Audacity Cycles is gonna set up his own little course. I don't know if you saw what he did down at SingleSpeed Kansas City. Oh, nice. Yeah. He's, uh, yeah. I saw that after school course.
• 54:40
I'm going up there to work. Okay. [laughs] I'm a volunteer. And I- You're your own fairy godmilf this weekend. Yep. All right, Spinner... life matters. We're gonna, we're gonna- All right...
• 54:55
we're gonna say goodbye, and we're gonna get rid of Travis too here in a second and, uh, wrap this Bad Oscar up, 'cause, uh, I don't know. [laughs] I know neither. Past your bedtime. Right? Past my bedtime. All right.
• 55:07
All right. Thanks, man. Talk to you guys. I'll see you Friday-ish there, Spinner. Ah, ah, ah. All right. I'll be there. Buh-bye. Glory. Travis, did you open beer number two yet? Yeah, right at the bottom of it, man.
• 55:21
My wife's suddenly wondering why I'm shit-faced drunk- [laughs]... at 6:00 at night on a Wednesday. [laughs] We're here to help. Atta- atta boy. Yeah. Hallelujah. We're cheering you on.
• 55:35
It's not a Fat Aciders name for nothing. Go, Travis, go. Go, Travis, go. You're the man, Travis. Uh, yeah. [laughs] Well, so that's like four- Takes me to the bottom of that one, Gomez... like, like what?
• 55:46
Four weeks in a row now Travis is our, uh- Travis is the man. He's- I'm gonna put Travis at number one, and Old Bear is right there, though. Not as often, but he's called in a lot. That's true.
• 55:55
I mean, not, not as regularly, but he's... That Old Bear, he, he has such a great story about how fat biking has actually made him live longer- Right... even though he's having health problems now.
• 56:04
He's an, he's an old man. Ain't no young spring chicken. Right. And, uh, if it weren't for fat bikes and his love of it, he would be, uh- Yeah... not doing as well health-wise. And where he lives, there is just- Yeah...
• 56:17
badass trails. Kick ass. I'd like to ride with that old dude. Right? Actually, we should probably go down there on our way to Georgia- South Georgia... like in February when we're gonna go down and ride that.
• 56:26
That, that town down there wants us to come down there and ride their trails, and like, yep. Probably harvest our organs. Not in, not, not in- [laughs] This one's an eater. Mm, delicious.
• 56:38
[laughs] Good thing it's February. The coldest month of the calendar year. Yes. We'll render his fat and make soup. [laughs] All right, Travis. We're gonna finish up this thing. I don't know.
• 56:52
We got a lot- We, we still have, uh, we still have quite a bit to talk about, I think. Yeah. Right? So we're gonna, we're gonna just gonna do our due. Where did we get to? Did we... Yeah. I don't even know.
• 56:59
[laughs] I don't even know. Just stare at things again. Uh, I think it was lynx or something. [laughs] We're not even... No, we're definitely not to that yet.
• 57:06
As far as I know, we've just got done talking to [laughs] Olaf. Yeah. [laughs] This is like, this is like Pulp Fiction, like watching- All right... Pulp Fiction. So- How it just kinda boom, boom, boom... all right.
• 57:14
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. So we gave last week's quest- or next week's question is gonna be, what's your favorite aspect of fat-adventure-mountain-biking? [laughs] If I do not- Yeah...
• 57:25
if I, I remember correctly, 818-918-2453. Well, once again, that's 818-9, blah, blah, blah. Where is that? Uh. And we're still looking for more Fat Aciders. True. Hey, we got another caller. [laughs] No way.
• 57:41
Who's on the line? [upbeat music] It's Fat Man. I'm here at Trek World riding Chris Farley with Ronan. Trek World? My Farley is so greasy, Fat Man.
• 57:59
Ronan and I are here testing the new tandem Fat Cycle. All carbon fiber and Kevlar. To the Fat Cycle, Ronan.
• 58:07
[upbeat music] Fat Man and Ronan, boys and girls.
• 58:24
[laughs] [clapping] All righty, ladies and gentlemen, that was Fat Man and Ronan. We'll be right back with the Fatty Farm Field Report right after this. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 58:42
We're back. This week's Fatty Farm Field Report is sponsored by Uncle Dick's Bead Slip. Check them out at Uncle Dick's Bike Shop. I got a question about Uncle Dick. What's up? Where the hell is he this week? I know.
• 58:53
And he just showed his, showed- [laughs] He came in. He's like, "Uh," worked the switchboard a little while, then he took out his guitar, and we were like, "Dude!" Hey. "You gotta come every week."
• 59:04
He was all like [singing] Yeah. We'll have, we'll, we'll have Uncle Dick doing musical interludes at some show in the not too distant future. Well, we had, uh, we had Ron Stawicki on the, on the call line there.
• 59:17
So that was- Yeah. Man, that's amazing. I, I'm so psyched about that. What a nice guy. Absolutely. Let's give three cheers to Ron Sta for winning the Wasatch 24 on a fat bike. Cheers. Yay, Ron. Sploosh.
• 59:33
[laughs] Oh, my God. [laughs] So okay, last week we had a question too. Looks like we had a question this week, but I don't know if it was as contentious this week as last week.
• 59:46
I think last week was more of a, you know- Yeah... it was, would USA Cycling- Should USA Cycling be involved in, in, in anything to do with [laughs] fat bike racing, but in this case, the Fat Bike National Championships?
• 59:57
And to be honest, I, I invited a, a lot of race promoters, you know, like the, the guy from Great Lakes to call in, and I thought he might call in, but he just got too busy or whatever. His, from his basement?
• 1:00:08
[laughs] Scott Chambers, I believe. Yeah. Right. Exactly. Um, um, so it would've been interesting to hear from that aspect, and probably, you know, we should give USA Cycling [laughs] a chance to come on this show.
• 1:00:24
I don't know. I don't know. Where's Micah? It just seems, uh- Micah Rice, it's a call out to you, brother. We'll certainly talk to you and- Yeah, I would talk to him... we'll just ask you one question.
• 1:00:36
Why'd you jump in at the top instead of starting from the ground up, like would be- Yeah. Yeah. Uh, that's fair... that's my, that's, that's my question. That's a fair question. I mean, it's not a dick question.
• 1:00:43
It's actually a serious question. Although I'm gonna say it in kind of a dickish tone. [laughs] That, that race was- [laughs]... that race was really nice, though. They, they had an expo. They had sponsors. They had-...
• 1:00:56
a freaking- Yeah, w-... film crew with a drone pilot Guess who, guess who also has sponsors and this and that? Donald Trump. Oh. He's a promoter, they're promoters. I don't get it. Yeah. It's kinda the same thing.
• 1:01:07
When you put it that way- [laughs]... I just wanna gouge my own mouth out for- Girls, girls, girls, girls, girls. [laughs] I'm gonna have to miss, Mrs. Garrett this one. All right.
• 1:01:19
[laughs] So, uh, JK, uh, you wanna explain the Polish Moon? [laughs] It's not a lady. It's not a lady.
• 1:01:29
No, it's, uh, normally what's referred to as the, the Rockwell, Allen Bradley clock tower here in fair Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The, the largest illuminated face clock in the world- Yes... still, I believe.
• 1:01:42
Larger than Big Ben. Well, it's, but it's illuminated from behind- Yes... which is the killer thing. So it's always a full moon. And it was a full moon- Kind of-... ride, uh- The blue moon, actually...
• 1:01:51
full bloom moon, moon. Blue moon, blue moon, blue moon. We will not have another one until 2018, I believe. That's two, that's two full moons in one month, is what a blue moon is. Or three years from now.
• 1:02:00
That's like- And 750 Milwaukeeans on two wheels. Something like that, yeah. I think there was, uh, th- fluctuating- Yeah... whatever. Yeah. But I mean, it was, uh, all to raise, uh, some cash for, uh- Bike Fed...
• 1:02:14
the Bike Fed, uh, uh, building a community bike shop, uh, down in, on Pure Street at- Yeah... their headquarters. Right. Yeah. On the first- Which, and they've, and they've been working on that for a while. Yeah.
• 1:02:24
Like, that's a fantastic idea. They're in, they're right on one of our, our cool bike trails, the Hank Aaron Trail, but they're in a, a neighborhood that is, what do you say about it? It's not rich. [laughs] Oh, no.
• 1:02:37
It's not a rich area. No, it's, it's a, it's a- It's downtrodden. Do we call it- Well, I mean-... disadvantaged? What do we call it? You know? No, no. I mean, it's, is, is that where the peasants live? Yeah.
• 1:02:46
[laughs] No, it's, it's like fully a, the- Off with, they should eat cake then. No, sir. No. Okay, no. Here- No, sir... seriously.
• 1:02:56
But it's, it's a great cause is to get people that don't have access to, uh, repair stuff for bikes, a, a place to go and be able to have transportation. You guys are lucky to have Bike Fed.
• 1:03:10
You know, I got nothing out there in the counties. Is Wisconsin Bike Fed? You got 'em? Yes. Yeah. Oh, so you scoff. Yeah, yeah. I've got a, I've had a lot of Bike Fed strokes. I think that was a scoff.
• 1:03:18
If, if there was a subtitle right there, it would be scoff. Scoffs. [laughs] Hey, Madison and Milwaukee, they do a heck of a job. I don't- Internally, I get you. Yeah. Yeah. You know what I mean?
• 1:03:32
There's not much to do out by us. There's just cows. And errant vehicles. Yeah. True dat. All right. So that's the- So-... Polish Moon Ride, pretty much... yeah... fat bikes on it, this and that. Oh, yeah.
• 1:03:43
Celebrating the, uh, Polish neighborhood, uh, south side of Milwaukee. It's also celebrating the Latino culture that is. Right on. Si. So- Very represented, Gomez... que bueno. Well, it, it was driving me crazy.
• 1:04:01
Ran by a couple of damn taco trucks, and that's really one of my, like- The weaknesses? Oh, yeah... some, some head taco. Head taco. Head's on the menu. Yeah. Mm. Gotta order. Bam. Bam.
• 1:04:12
So y- and you, you went up to Manitowoc. Yeah, Trivers. What's Trivers? Actually Trivers. Nice. Man. Uh- Up top...
• 1:04:19
we did the full moon ride up there with, uh, George from Broken Spoke, and I think we had about 20 people.
• 1:04:26
And just like down here, the lake up there is really high, so we didn't get as much beach riding in as we would have a couple years ago. But we had some awesome trails, had some pizza, drank some beer. Killer.
• 1:04:37
Commiserated with the friendses and whatnot. And, uh- You went to- I, I kinda made that the beginning of a weekend that I went the next day to Kewanee to check out the beach there and just see if anything's changed.
• 1:04:51
Yes, the water's high, but it was such a, a flat water day that I got down the beach a ways to check it out, and it, it's actually would be really cool. Mm.
• 1:05:01
But you cannot go there un- if there's any kind of water movement. Yeah. And then, uh- It's a boat ramp... right. Yep. Then I headed up to Reforestation Camp.
• 1:05:10
Uh, George has a shop in Green Bay, and my intention was to stop [laughs] at the shop and check it out, but I was having so much fun at Reforestation Camp riding the plus bike that I didn't get there before the close it.
• 1:05:21
[laughs] Yes. Nice. The sundial did- Yeah... failed me. Well, that and, you know, the r- we got the kettles down here, and we got the river trails right outside our door almost, but that's a different kind of a system.
• 1:05:34
And the, the, the composition of the ground is sandy-ish. It always reminds me of Michigan. Mm-hmm. But the plus bike was just, man, it was awesome on there. Killer. I was having lots of fun.
• 1:05:47
So- And George told you, uh, he's gonna run a three-race series up there? Yep. They're working on... I d- I know we have the shell track, which has been going on for a long time, right on Manitowoc shoreline.
• 1:05:58
He's got something happening at the Reforestation Camp on the cross-country trails, which is something new because that can actually accommodate a couple hundred people, which- Sure...
• 1:06:07
is his, that's his goal this year, is to get 200 people and see how it works. And it's, it, it's a nice system.
• 1:06:13
It's got, it's gently rolling hills, and on the, on the, uh, cross-country track, you'd have enough room to have- Right... several people at once. All machine groomed.
• 1:06:22
Plus with, you know, throwing in some of the single track, just little s- sections here and there. Sure. So it would be really cool. Um, I hope that works out well.
• 1:06:31
The third race, I'm not exactly sure where that is, [laughs] but he's- They have a little system up there that's- Yeah... right up on the lake just north of Manitowoc.
• 1:06:38
But it, but the, the deal about this is, uh, George is one of the, I mean, he's one of the most enthusiastic guys about fat bikes. I think they do more fat bikes than most shops in the country by a long ways.
• 1:06:49
And what makes that work is that he does stuff like this. He gets people enthusiastic about fat bikes. I was at that Reforestation Camp. He's got a shop in Green Bay, and I, every male adult that I saw-...
• 1:07:03
was on a fat bike, and he was either with his girlfriend or with his kids. But those guys were at... And I probably saw eight or 10, and I wasn't there that long, and the, and it was guys on fat bikes. Yeah.
• 1:07:15
That's, I, I, I agree. I, I went to Rock Hut for a ride and met up with our test pilot, Scott Peterson, for our great rack shootout, which is almost ready to go. We've been teasing you with the great rack shootout.
• 1:07:28
Yeah, right? I'm like, are we ever gonna use any of all that video stuff we did [laughs] on bikes? Yeah, that's, that's coming right up. Okay. That's coming right up. That's good.
• 1:07:34
I think August 15th, all the testing is actually done, so. Oh, I didn't realize we weren't... Yeah, okay. I get it. 'Cause- I thought it was kinda dead in the water. [laughs] No, no, no. We've been trading racks.
• 1:07:45
And, you know, with travel and this and that, it's like, well, four guys, four racks, two weeks each, but there've been, you know, a couple of dead weeks in there- Yeah... getting things turned around. For sure.
• 1:07:55
So, um, anyway, I went out there, and plenty of mountain bikers in that parking lot, but a smattering of fat bikes, all old guys like us. [laughs] Right. Well, that's because we figured it out, apparently. Yeah.
• 1:08:08
Finally, we're cooler than the young kids. [laughs] We like to have fun. So- So, uh, are we psyched? We, uh, we got some news.
• 1:08:17
We, I don't know if you guys know this, but we started a new website called plusbikes.com, and we've been working on this, and we're going to go and announce that Chris Reichl is gonna be the editor of plusbikes.com, and it's his birthday the day that we're taping this on Wednesday.
• 1:08:36
Happy birthday- Happy birthday, Chris... to you. To you. To you. So you can, uh, you can look forward to, uh, a lot of cool stuff coming out of plusbikes.com.
• 1:08:45
We're psyched to work with Chris 'cause he's a, he's one of us. We're one of him. Right. We're cousins. We're, we're amigos. So Chris Reichl. Yeah. Who the, who the hell knows him by that name? Oh, yeah.
• 1:08:56
It's Dirty Biker from Drug Cyclists. Oh, yeah. The- And he's, he's currently on a, like a two-month trip across the country, riding on a cross-country bike with a trailer with another bike- That's next week...
• 1:09:08
a more mountain bikey thing- Yeah... attached to the back of the trailer. The Great Light Buffalo, #GreatLightBuffalo. So after he finishes that- Wait, are we listening to Ted Nugent now? [laughs] No.
• 1:09:20
Um, so after he finishes that, we all go to Interbike together, and we'll be shooting video, and, uh, you will, uh, s- see an all new gonzo journalistic version of Interbike this year with the- I'm looking forward to it.
• 1:09:32
Uh, we need some fr- [laughs] we need some fresh meat in this here company. And he's all about getting in front of that video camera and being, being the guy. Good.
• 1:09:40
And you see just, I, I was thinking on the drive into the studio today, I was like, Dirty and Sovereign. Dirty. Dirty. Yeah, I was thinking- Dirty... I was thinking Dirty too. I was thinking Dirty.
• 1:09:51
Dirty and Sovereign, that interview. Hmm. One of them's, one of them's gonna wanna be the king. [laughs] The Indian leg wrestling will determine- That's how you have to flip- All right.
• 1:10:01
That's what- You have to flip like Magnus- Dirty, the other interaction... the other direction. Indian leg wrestling. That's, that's why I'll be there to, to do direction, you know?
• 1:10:08
That's, we al- I always play the director. Mm-hmm. But not the heavy. [laughs] And rare, and rarely the villain. Because you might need to get a... [laughs] Hey, somebody. Hey. An arm. [laughs] Something.
• 1:10:18
Put, put our Dirty down, Sovereign. [laughs] All right. Well, that sounds like a lot of, lot of good stuff we're doing. Yeah.
• 1:10:26
We've been putting this fat bike ambassador thing out there, and actually had some, uh, emails this week from people who couldn't call in for whatever reason, including Ian, who's out in Abu Dhabi. Yeah. Abu Dhabi.
• 1:10:37
That is a long ways away. Arabian desert. Yeah. And, uh, he said, here's, this, I'm gonna quote him because I don't wanna be taking of God's name in vain. "It's gawd," G-A-W-D,
• 1:10:51
"damn hot in this neck of the woods at the moment. Some folks have posted pics of their car dashes showing 50 degrees C." I don't know what that means, but- Celsius. Yeah, I, I know what it means, but it's hot.
• 1:11:01
So it's hot. It's like 110 or s- more. Yeah. It's hot. But, uh, despite- It's damn hot... despite that, they've been, uh, getting out in the big dunes.
• 1:11:09
Sean has been down to the Liwa Desert, and, uh, he sent some pictures. I'm gonna throw one of those in the show notes.
• 1:11:16
And, um, Sean was one of the early adapters of the team down there at Saudi Arabian Fat Bikers, I think- Mm-hmm... on Facebook. Mm-hmm.
• 1:11:24
That completed the groundbreaking crossing, 135 kilometers of just, like, desert and outstanding terrain- Yeah... which is what he kinda showed in this. And they have a video.
• 1:11:34
I'll have, uh, a little bit of that in the show notes as well. And Travis, who's maybe still on the line. Travis is on the line. You- Yo. Hey. [laughs] Welcome to TFTS. Spanish ladies.
• 1:11:49
Well, Travis, I, I, I did just- [laughs] I th- I threw in the show notes just a little bit about your Kenai Lake trip. You wanna just tell us a little bit about it? Yeah, I went down camping for the weekend.
• 1:11:59
Uh, it didn't start off on a good note. There was a seven car pile-up on the highway, a fatality, and a 10-hour sit- Oh, no Wow... on the road. Yeah, everybody heading south from the Kenai Peninsula drives
• 1:12:15
like you were saying. Yeah, it was kind of a bad deal, and, you know, bad stretch of road. But, uh, yeah, we got down to camp, and, uh, went and explored some chunks of Kenai Beach.
• 1:12:25
The water's pretty high right now, so we were only able to kinda ride little quarter, half-mile stretches at a time.
• 1:12:32
But, uh, went back through the campground and some roads, and, you know, got to check some of that scene out. Absolutely beautiful. I think in the fall,
• 1:12:42
if the water drops, and in the spring, uh, there could be some great potential there to, uh, just have some fantastic beach riding. Saw, I saw some, uh, some pictures.
• 1:12:53
There was one that looked like the foliage was pretty high. Oh, [laughs] yeah. That, we did, we did, uh, Sunday we rode the Crescent Creek Trail. 14 miles round trip, pretty much seven up and seven down.
• 1:13:05
And, uh, this time of year, in August- The trail will start really getting overgrown and, uh...
• 1:13:13
So yeah, that meadow we pulled into, that was pretty much grass over my head and we were getting close to the creek, which increased the possibility of, uh, coming across a bear [laughs] at this- Is that you in the photo?
• 1:13:25
What's that? Is that you in the photo? Yeah. Okay. We'll use that- Yeah, that's me... for a Wallpaper Wednesday, for sure, 'cause I love [laughs] that picture. And were you, were you packing heat- Oh, uh-...
• 1:13:34
to keep the bears at bay when you were riding- Yeah... through the meadow? Yes. Yeah, I had a guide holster on, and I've got a Ruger 454 Super Alaskan Redhawk, two and a half inch barrel,
• 1:13:49
uh, with some 300 grain Caspor rounds in that baby. So- And your wife had bear spray, right? [laughs] Absolutely, yep. Yep.
• 1:13:59
Yep, we travel with both, and you know, throughout the ride you get good sight lines, you can fly... Well, on the way up you're [laughs] not going very fast. It's a pretty good- Yeah... climb.
• 1:14:09
But, uh, you know, you got good sight lines, but you hit these patches of trail where you'll get this vegetation that's head high and, uh, particularly when you get near the creeks, you know, that's more likely where the bears will be hanging out, looking for fish.
• 1:14:23
And, uh, uh, so we group up. Uh, wife's got bells and the bear spray. I got a little speaker that I, uh, hang off my handlebars.
• 1:14:32
I blast that, and then we just gotta scream our head off and, you know, if you make a lot of noise, you're really unlikely to have an encounter, but y- you wanna be prepared. [laughs] Yep, and Ruger will prepare you.
• 1:14:45
And if you play, like, Sleep's Dope Smoker- [laughs]... it goes for 60 minutes straight over the speaker. [growls] "Look out bears, here I come." [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. That's got to suck. For sure.
• 1:15:00
A song for every occasion. So you didn't go, you didn't go, uh, and wrestle Nicholas Carman, did you? Are you afraid of the little guy, or what? I am not afraid of Nicholas Carman.
• 1:15:10
[laughs] I just, uh, had kind of a, you know, I'm gonna, I'm, I'm gonna meet the challenge, Gomez. I've not forgot about this. All right.
• 1:15:18
And, uh, yeah, last week had family in town and, uh- I was actually a little worried-... stuff going on... about, like, a ruckus breaking out, and I really haven't told Nicholas that you're coming in.
• 1:15:29
[laughs] So maybe, maybe we need to set this up and, uh, you know, work out the whole promotion so it can be, like, The Bike Shop presents- We need to be in on the betting somehow...
• 1:15:42
Travis "The Hammer" Hubbard versus- [laughs]... Nicholas "Chainsaw" Carman. [sighs] Yeah, I, I'm not- [laughs]... asking for drugs. Makes me, makes me cough.
• 1:15:57
[laughs] Is that Fat Man at the door? I, uh- Sorry. [knocking] Now that I am a, uh, an official ambassador, I'm wondering when I'm gonna get my license plate, 'cause I really want some diplomatic immunity.
• 1:16:12
[laughs] Diplomatic immunity. Diplomatic immunity. Oh, all the other investors ask for Coke and a horse. You know what could be like- It's not Lethal Weapon 2 references [laughs]...
• 1:16:27
I can walk in and get the best steaks and just grab them behind the counter and walk out the door with them. Wow. Awesome, man. Wow. Priority. [laughs] Plate... Diplomatic plates and meat. All right. I like it.
• 1:16:41
We still [laughs] we still gotta, we still gotta get through the rest of this show somehow. I know. We still have more material. Yeah.
• 1:16:46
So one of the, one of the things that, uh, that we have on, on our list here is we lost a, a great cyclist from Milwaukee this week, uh, Rob Hoffman. We knew him as Shuggs 'cause he rode a Sugar.
• 1:17:00
And he also had that pimp-ass coat- Yeah... on every Fat Tire Tour and, uh, and Santa Ride. A great guy who lost his life while doing what he loved, though. So, uh- Cycling...
• 1:17:12
you know, let's, uh, let's send Shuggs off to heaven, and we'll take a break. We'll be back after this. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.

• 1:18:02
And we're back with Fat Bike Links. I was thinking about Rob. Yeah. It's,
• 1:18:09
it's, uh, it's a very, very- Well, we'll have a l- There's a, our buddy Dave at, um, Bike Fed wrote a really good story about it, and the picture that he posted of Rob with the American flag was on what we call a crappy bike ride on July 4th, and the little girl in the picture is my daughter.
• 1:18:30
Yeah. She was, that was the first time she met Rob. This was probably eight years ago maybe, uh, or so. And, you know, sh- he didn't know her from Adam, but he was...
• 1:18:44
I just remember him being nice to everybody, nice to the daughter.
• 1:18:47
And on that ride my daughter, later in the, in the evening, crashed, at eight years old, on this little, you gotta see the bike, it's like a 18-inch BMX bike, and got road rash over most of one side of her body, 'cause she was going really fast chasing some older kids.
• 1:19:01
And I just remember, like, everybody, including Rob, coming around and saying, "It's gonna be okay. Dudes love chicks with scars."
• 1:19:12
And, you know, th- that's, that's like a typical Rob thing to say, for sure, is that, uh, you know, everything is, is, and it just fun. And I, I, we'll, we'll miss the guy.
• 1:19:21
We're gonna be, you know, giving him our respects on Friday and [sighs] you know, we'll miss you, man. Hard to go back into the rest of the show [laughs] with that. It is. And we'll be- Man... right back. Yeah.
• 1:19:37
Well, we've got a, we've got some links that we always put in the show. Um, we just talked to Olive. You know, he's famous 'cause of this French thing, but, uh, you can check that link out.
• 1:19:48
And obviously trilingual, perhaps- Yeah... quintlingual. Yeah, that's- Yeah, he was even getting, like, pop culture- Yeah, it's-... language- Right...
• 1:19:57
flying there [laughs] Maybe that's how they, maybe that's how they learn English, they watch a pop culture show, well, shows. Milwaukee, the Fonzie, hey. Hey.
• 1:20:06
[laughs] So how's this thing about Under Armour gets into the Fat Bike [laughs] game? Uh- That's gotta be JK. Yeah. They have a shoe, trail running shoe.
• 1:20:18
"Go where you don't belong," in big caps, inspired by the oversized tires found on, quote, "fat bikes." And they have, like, a fat bike tread on the bottom, right? Yeah. Yeah. I've seen them before. That's cool.
• 1:20:32
Yeah, I, I, I- Under Armour- I was just like-... ladies and gentlemen... I mean, it just came out of nowhere. I was like, "Uh..." Are the bottoms green still? They can be. Uh, oh, that teal. Yeah.
• 1:20:44
I don't know, I couldn't remember. Teal, come on. You know your color scheme. Cyan. You had the, you had the 128 trail of pack- [laughs]... you know, cyan. Magenta.
• 1:20:53
Yeah, we have a couple of, we c- have a couple of the usual, uh, suspects. We have- We got Joe Boo in there. We got a- Yeah.
• 1:20:59
We haven't heard from Death Rider lately, but, uh, he, they would, did a thing at the, the Cogs, uh, ride up in Superior, Duluth area. Cool. And they went sea kayaking after that, so check that one out.
• 1:21:12
He's like land, sea, and underground- Right... 'cause he does the underground things. Yeah, he does the urban exploration kind of thing.
• 1:21:18
Kevin Brighton back is gonna test gear for us now, so he's starting to send in some stories.
• 1:21:23
He has a link here, which is, gives the history of ice biking and riding that goes all the way back to the turn of the century, the first great bicycle revolution.
• 1:21:34
I started to read it, I just didn't get all the way through it. Yeah. It, it's, uh, d- it's something that you, uh, uh, it, culturally the Alaskans are very interested in the riding that went on.
• 1:21:46
It's like, we didn't just start this yesterday, boys. [laughs] Yeah, they had, like, army- Right... army brigades or whatever- And riding on the rivers-... squads... man. You know, that's rivers, rivers of ice. Right on.
• 1:21:58
We have Plusbikes links. We, uh- But those jerks over at Plusbikes haven't sent us. [laughs] Yeah. Um, you, Sven. You. You. You. That guy over there. You. Hi, you. You wrote about some Fat Be Nimble tires.
• 1:22:14
Yep, so far so good. Been out only a couple times, but that was a first look story and, uh, boy, I'll tell you what, them things are light. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
• 1:22:23
We have, uh, we have the 29 plus review coming down the pike from Ken Blakey's show. That'll probably publish next week. Right on. We kinda have a few stories stacked up there now for the Plusbikes, the genre.
• 1:22:37
And things are cooking pretty well on the Fat Bike end. We've been, uh, I kinda shook the bushes a little bit and asked our test pilot crew for this year to send me a little, uh [laughs] Just let it go, man. Jesus.
• 1:22:54
It's right here on the monitor. Driving me insane, you have no idea. We have a little gnat that's, like, flying around the studio. It's freaking us out. [laughs] Right on. So anyway, so- [laughs]...
• 1:23:08
we have, I asked our te- [laughs] Our te- [laughs] I asked our test pilots to send us a story, and you know what they did? They sent us stories. They- Jeff Price sent, like, four stories. There we go.
• 1:23:21
So- Travis is gonna do a story. Right on. Yeah, we got stuff coming up. Uh- JK's got a story working. Yeah, he does. Mm-hmm. He's got that bag story working. He, he alleged that it would be done soon. Really? Oh, yes.
• 1:23:35
I gotta put it through its paces. Yeah. A little paces. All right. You know, it's a process. I- You know what else is a process? We're here to help you.
• 1:23:43
Thanks to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast. You know what that means? That means we [laughs] almost have made it through the show.
• 1:23:50
Well, so- We're, we're already 30 minutes past our- We're doing a, this is a, we got a, it was such a great show. It's been a epic show- Well-... 'cause people called in... you know what? That's awesome.
• 1:23:57
And, and it, it's awesome talking to people, and we would love to have people talk all the time. Yeah. We just need- Oh... to cut down how much we talk. [laughs] Probably. Maybe.
• 1:24:06
We'll have to stop writing such a long damn script. All right. But, hey- Fat Man and Ronin, ladies and gentlemen. [laughs] Fat Boy and- [laughs]
• 1:24:14
Hey, be sure to check out, uh, the new episode of Fat Camp with our amigos Dan Michoacan, Ken, and Andy. That new show airs on Saturday morning, August 8th. Yeah.
• 1:24:24
That'd be tomorrow if you- They're gonna talk about, like, tire ratios and things... tire sizes, wheel sizes. Yeah, just how all that relates, but like- Oh, more like-... rim-...
• 1:24:33
like, tire widths and rim widths- Right... and how that does to a thing. Right, which I wanna, I wanna g- [laughs] I wanna get Ken's take on my Dillinger 5s on a 50 millimeter rim- Yeah...
• 1:24:43
'cause that's what I'm running on one of my bikes, and I actually love it, but I don't ride very hard, and I, I'm not [laughs] just like, my ratios are all off, I'm sure. Yeah. My [laughs] ratios are off.
• 1:24:52
No, but yeah, yeah, give a listen to it. It's not like a- You guys know how-... 80- You guys know how entertaining we are and know nothing? Well, those guys are entertaining and know something. Right.
• 1:25:02
I'm gonna hook them up with some Trek engineers, and they're gonna rap about stuff. Angoneers. [laughs] All right. Trek. I'm gonna go ahead and say- The Star Trek engineer... bye now. Mr. Scott. Slough, kids.
