- 0:11Hello friends, Sean here. It's Monday, it's the 8th of
- 0:14December. We are well and truly in the
- 0:17thick of end of year celebrations.
- 0:20Hope yours are going well. Mine.
- 0:22Oh, thanks for asking. I haven't been hungry oh for
- 0:24days now. You know what it's like.
- 0:27You go from one party to the next and you think, oh, I'll be
- 0:30more sensible this time. I won't eat too much.
- 0:33And then that second round of dessert comes out and you think,
- 0:35oh, that looks delicious. It's OK, it's OK.
- 0:40That's why we have other notches in our belts that we can expand
- 0:43into. I hope you're going well and
- 0:45this part of the year is treating you well, friends.
- 0:48And wherever you are, no matter what's going on, thank you for
- 0:51taking a moment to put it all down so that you and I can come
- 0:56before our God and hear His word to us.
- 0:59And of course, we are still going through the book of Acts.
- 1:02We've got two more weeks, two more weeks in this story.
- 1:06And today, Paul heads back into Jerusalem, into the thick of
- 1:10trouble, and he gets himself arrested.
- 1:14Oh, there'll be plenty more of that as the story continues to
- 1:17unfold. So, Holy Spirit, open our
- 1:20hearts, open our minds, put down the busyness and all those
- 1:25thoughts that are whirling in our heads so that we can hear
- 1:28your quiet, still voice speaking to us.
- 1:34Ah, friends, you ready? All that's left to do is for us
- 1:37to read. So let's do that as we read
- 1:39together Acts chapter 21. After saying farewell to the
- 1:54Ephesian elders, we sailed straight to the island of Kos.
- 1:58The next day we reached Rhodes and then went to Patera.
- 2:03There we boarded a ship sailing for Phoenicia.
- 2:06We sighted the island of Cyprus, passed it on our left and landed
- 2:11at the harbour attire in Syria, where the ship was to unload its
- 2:15cargo. We went to shore, found the
- 2:19local believers and stayed with them for a week.
- 2:22These believers prophesied through the Holy Spirit that
- 2:25Paul should not go to Jerusalem. When we returned to the ship at
- 2:30the end of the week, the entire congregation, including women
- 2:34and children, left the city and came down to the shore with us.
- 2:39There we knelt, prayed and set our farewells.
- 2:43Then we went aboard and they returned home.
- 2:47The next stop after leaving Tyre was Ptolemais, where we greeted
- 2:52the brothers and sisters and stayed for one day.
- 2:55The next day we went on to say Syria and stayed at the home of
- 2:59Philip the Evangelist, one of the seven men who had been
- 3:02chosen to distribute food. He had four unmarried daughters
- 3:07who had the gift of prophecy. Several days later, a man named
- 3:12Agabus, who also had the gift of prophecy, arrived from Judea.
- 3:16He came over, took Paul's belt and bound his own feet and hands
- 3:22with it. Then he said, The Holy Spirit
- 3:25declares, so shall the owner of this belt be bound by the Jewish
- 3:30leaders in Jerusalem and turned over to the Gentiles.
- 3:35When we heard this, we and the local believers all begged Paul
- 3:39not to go on to Jerusalem. But he said, Why all this
- 3:43weeping? You are breaking my heart.
- 3:47I am ready not only to be gaoled at Jerusalem, but even to die
- 3:51for the sake of the Lord Jesus. When it was clear that we
- 3:55couldn't persuade him, we gave up and said the Lord's will be
- 4:00done. After this, we packed our things
- 4:04and left for Jerusalem. Some believers from, say, Saria
- 4:07accompanied us, and they took us to the home of Nason, a man
- 4:12originally from Cyprus and one of the early believers.
- 4:16When we arrived, the brothers and sisters in Jerusalem
- 4:19welcomed us warmly. The next day, Paul went with us
- 4:24to meet James, and all the elders of the Jerusalem church
- 4:27were present. After greeting them, Paul gave a
- 4:30detailed account of all the things God had accomplished
- 4:34among the Gentiles through his ministry.
- 4:38After hearing this, they praised God, and then they said, you
- 4:43know, dear brother, how many thousands of Jews have also
- 4:47believed? And they all follow the Law of
- 4:50Moses very seriously. But the Jewish believers here in
- 4:54Jerusalem have been told that you are teaching all the Jews
- 4:58who live among the Gentiles to turn their backs on the laws of
- 5:02Moses. They've heard that you teach
- 5:04them not to circumcise their children or follow other Jewish
- 5:07customs. What should we do?
- 5:11They will certainly hear that you have come.
- 5:14Here's what we want you to do. We have 4 men here who have
- 5:18completed their vow. Go with them to the temple and
- 5:22join them in the purification ceremony, paying for them to
- 5:25have their heads ritually shaved.
- 5:28Then everyone will know that the rumours are all false and that
- 5:32you yourself observe the Jewish laws.
- 5:35As for the Gentile believers, they should do what we already
- 5:39told them in a letter. They should abstain from eating
- 5:43food offered to idols, from consuming blood or the meat of
- 5:46strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.
- 5:52So Paul went to the temple the next day with the other men.
- 5:55They had already started the purification ritual, so he
- 5:58publicly announced the date their vows would end and
- 6:02sacrifices would be offered for each of them.
- 6:05The seven days were almost ended when some Jews from the province
- 6:10of Asia saw Paul in the temple and roused a mob against him.
- 6:15They grabbed him yelling Men of Israel, help us.
- 6:19This is the man who preaches against our people everywhere
- 6:23and tells everybody to disobey the Jewish laws.
- 6:27He speaks against the temple and even defiles this holy place by
- 6:33bringing in Gentiles, for earlier that day they had seen
- 6:38him in the city with Trophemus, a Gentile from Ephesus, and they
- 6:42assumed Paul had taken him into the temple.
- 6:45The whole city was rocked by these accusations and a great
- 6:49riot followed. Paul was grabbed and dragged out
- 6:53of the temple and immediately the gates were closed behind
- 6:57him. As they were trying to kill him,
- 7:00word reached the commander of the Roman regiment that all
- 7:03Jerusalem was in an uproar. He immediately called out his
- 7:08soldiers and officers and ran down among the crowd.
- 7:12When the mob saw the commander and the troops coming, they
- 7:15stopped beating Paul. Then the commander arrested him
- 7:20and ordered him bound with two chains.
- 7:23He asked the crowd who he was and what he had done.
- 7:28Some shouted one thing and some another.
- 7:31Since he couldn't find out the truth in all the uproar and
- 7:35confusion, he ordered that Paul be taken to the fortress.
- 7:40As Paul reached the stairs, the mob grew so violent the soldiers
- 7:45had to lift him to their shoulders to protect him, and
- 7:48the crowd followed behind shouting Kill him, kill him.
- 7:56As Paul was about to be taken inside, he said to the
- 8:00commander, May I have a word with you?
- 8:04Do you know Greek? The commander asked, surprised.
- 8:08Aren't you the Egyptian who led a rebellion some time ago and
- 8:12took 4000 members of the assassins out into the desert?
- 8:17No, Paul replied. I am a Jew and a citizen of
- 8:21Tarsus in Sicilia, which is an important city.
- 8:25Please let me talk to these people.
- 8:29The commander agreed. So Paul stood on the stairs and
- 8:33motioned to the people to be quiet.
- 8:36Soon, a deep silence enveloped the crowd and he addressed them
- 8:42in their own language, Aramaic. Jesus, you have prepared each
- 8:57one of us for a life of service to You, and day to day we don't
- 9:02know very much about what that service is going to look like.
- 9:06But we do know that our lives are here merely to serve You,
- 9:10our wonderful God, our incredible Saviour.
- 9:15So Lord, each day we just pray for Your guidance, that you
- 9:20would prompt us, that you would lead us, and that as we move
- 9:25through this life that we would do so as your ambassadors of
- 9:28grace and peace and truth. Because, Lord, we are so
- 9:35grateful that we inhabit your grace, we hold your peace, and
- 9:41we know your truth. You are truth.
- 9:45Jesus, thank you for that gift that you give us and for
- 9:49inviting us to be part of your solution, bringing your Kingdom
- 9:54to this earth. We just thank you and praise you
- 9:58and lift up our hands to you, our loving, incredible Saviour,
- 10:03in whose name we pray all these things, Amen.
