Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
• 0:06
rooted in scripture and relevant for today.
• 0:09
  June 12th. Laughter and courage.
• 0:12
Keys to a bold life. There's a verse in Proverbs that
• 0:17
might surprise you with how relevant it is.
• 0:20
Proverbs chapter 17 verse 22 says a joyful heart is good
• 0:24
medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
• 0:28
That's not just a feel good quote, that's science meeting
• 0:32
scripture. Because there is something about
• 0:34
genuine joy, not the fake performative kind, but the deep
• 0:38
grounded kind that comes from trusting God that actually
• 0:42
heals, strengthens and sustains us in ways that anxiety and
• 0:46
despair simply cannot. We live under so much pressure.
• 0:51
School performance, social dynamics, family expectations,
• 0:56
comparing yourself to everyone's highlight reel online.
• 1:00
It's exhausting. And when you're running on
• 1:02
empty, even small challenges can feel enormous.
• 1:06
That's why this verse matters so much.
• 1:08
Joy isn't just a nice to have. It's medicine for the heavy
• 1:12
moments of life. And then there's Jonathan in
• 1:15
First Samuel chapter 14. Here's a guy who, by any human
• 1:19
calculation, should have played it safe.
• 1:22
The enemy had the numbers, the weapons, the high ground.
• 1:25
But Jonathan looked at his armor bearer and said in First Samuel
• 1:29
chapter 14 verses one to six, essentially, let's go.
• 1:33
Maybe the Lord will work for us. Not a certainty, not a
• 1:37
guarantee, just faith. Just the quiet confidence of
• 1:42
someone who knows that God can do something with very little.
• 1:46
  Jonathan didn't wait for permission.
• 1:49
He didn't wait until conditions were perfect.
• 1:52
He stepped forward with what he had, faith in, a willing
• 1:55
partner, and God showed up. Here's the beautiful tension in
• 1:59
these two passages. Joy fuels courage, and courage
• 2:03
is sustained by joy. They are not opposites, they
• 2:06
work together. When your heart is rooted in
• 2:08
God's goodness, you stop making decisions from fear and start
• 2:12
making them from faith. Jonathan's boldness wasn't
• 2:16
recklessness, it was the overflow of a heart that
• 2:19
genuinely trusted God. What's your Goliath right now?
• 2:23
What's the situation in your life that feels too big, too
• 2:26
risky, too uncertain to step into?
• 2:29
Maybe it's a conversation you need to have, a dream you've
• 2:33
been afraid to pursue, a moment where God is asking you to step
• 2:37
forward and trust Him. Joy and courage together are the
• 2:40
  keys. Let's pray.
• 2:44
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of genuine joy, the
• 2:48
kind that doesn't depend on circumstances but flows from
• 2:51
knowing you. Help us to carry that joy into
• 2:53
the challenges we face and let it fuel our courage rather than
• 2:57
our fear. Like Jonathan, give us the faith
• 3:00
to step forward even when the odds seem impossible, knowing
• 3:04
that you can do something extraordinary with our small
• 3:07
faithful steps in Jesus name, Amen.
• 3:12

Now I invite you to spend time with God in today's three-year
• 4:10
Bible reading plan. Proverbs chapter 17 verses 21 to
• 4:16
22 world English Bible he who becomes the father of a.
• 4:20
Fool grieves, the father of a. Fool has no joy.
• 4:24
A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed.
• 4:27
Spirit. Dries up the bones first Samuel
• 4:29
chapter 14 world English Bible now it fell on a day that
• 4:35
Jonathan, the son of Saul, said to the young man who bore his
• 4:37
armor, come. Let's go over to the.
• 4:41
Philistines Garrison that is on the other side, but he didn't
• 4:45
  tell his. Father Saul stayed.
• 4:47
In the uttermost part of Jibah, under the pomegranate tree which
• 4:50
is in Migran, and the people who were with him, were about 600
• 4:54
men, including Ahijah, the son of Ahitab.
• 4:58
Ichabod's brother. The son of Feynhas the son of.
• 5:01
Eli the Priest. Of Yahweh in Shiloh wearing an
• 5:04
ephod. The people didn't know that
• 5:07
Jonathan was gone between the passes by which Jonathan sought
• 5:11
  to go. Over to the.
• 5:12
  Philistines, Garrison. There was a.
• 5:14
Rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side,
• 5:18
and the name of the one was Boces and the name of the other
• 5:22
Sene. The one crag rose up on the
• 5:25
north in front of Mitch Mesh and the other on the South in front
• 5:28
of Jeba. Jonathan said to the young man
• 5:31
who bore his armor. Come, let's go.
• 5:34
Over to the. Garrison of these uncircumcised,
• 5:38
it may be that Yahweh. Will work for us for.
• 5:40
There is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few, his
• 5:44
armor bearer said to him. Do all that is in your heart.
• 5:48
Turn and behold, I am with you according to your heart, then,
• 5:52
  Jonathan said. Behold, we.
• 5:54
Will pass over to the men, and we will reveal ourselves to
• 5:57
them. If they say this to us.
• 5:59
Wait until we come to you, then we will stand still in our place
• 6:03
and will not go up to them. But if they say this, come up to
• 6:07
us. Then we will go up.
• 6:09
For Yahweh has. Delivered them into our hand.
• 6:12
This. Shall be the sign to us, both of
• 6:14
  them revealed. Themselves to the.
• 6:16
Garrison of the Philistines and the Philistines.
• 6:18
Said behold the. Hebrews are coming out of the
• 6:22
holes where they had hidden themselves, the men of the
• 6:25
Garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer and said.
• 6:28
Come up to. Us, and we will show you
• 6:31
something, Jonathan said to his armor bearer.
• 6:34
Come up after me. For Yahweh.
• 6:36
Has delivered them into the hand of Israel.
• 6:39
Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet and his armor
• 6:43
bearer after him, and they fell before Jonathan and his armor
• 6:47
bearer killed them after him. That first slaughter which
• 6:51
Jonathan and his armor bearer made was about 20 men within, as
• 6:56
it were, half a furrows length in an acre of land.
• 6:59
There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among
• 7:02
all the people. The Garrison and the Raiders
• 7:04
  also trembled. And the earth.
• 7:06
Quaked, so there. Was an exceedingly great
• 7:09
trembling the watchman of Saul in jiber of Benjamin looked, and
• 7:14
behold, the multitude melted away and scattered.
• 7:18
Then Saul said to the people who were.
• 7:19
With him, count now and see who is missing from us.
• 7:23
When they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer
• 7:26
were not there. Saul said to Ahuja.
• 7:29
Bring God. 'S ark here for God's ark.
• 7:32
Was with the children of Israel at that time while Saul talked.
• 7:36
To the priest. The tumult that was in the camp
• 7:38
of the Philistines went on and increased.
• 7:41
And Saul? Said to the priest.
• 7:43
  Withdraw your hand. Saul.
• 7:45
And all the people who were with him were.
• 7:47
Gathered together. And came to the battle and
• 7:50
  behold. They were all.
• 7:51
Striking each other with their swords in very great confusion.
• 7:55
Now the Hebrews, who were with the Philistines before, and who
• 7:58
went up with them into the camp from all around, even they also
• 8:02
turned to be with the. Israelites who?
• 8:04
Were with Saul and Jonathan likewise all the men of Israel
• 8:08
who had hidden themselves in the Hill Country of Ephraim.
• 8:11
When they heard that the. Philistines fled even they also
• 8:14
followed hard after them in the battle.
• 8:17
So Yahweh saved Israel that day. And the battle passed over by
• 8:21
Bait Aven, the men of. Israel were distressed that day,
• 8:25
for Saul had adjured the. People saying cursed is the man
• 8:29
who eats any food until it is evening and I am avenged of my
• 8:33
enemies so none of the. People tasted food.
• 8:37
All the people came into the forest and there was honey on
• 8:40
the ground when the people had come to the forest.
• 8:43
Behold. Honey was dripping, but no one
• 8:46
put his hand to his mouth. For the people feared the oath.
• 8:50
But Jonathan didn't hear when his father commanded the people.
• 8:53
With the oath, therefore, he. Put out the end of the rod that
• 8:57
was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand
• 9:01
to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.
• 9:04
Then one of the people answered and said, Your father directly
• 9:07
commanded the people with an oath saying, curse it is the man
• 9:11
who eats food today. So the people.
• 9:13
Were faint then, Jonathan said. My father has troubled the land
• 9:19
please look how my eyes have brightened, because I.
• 9:21
Tasted a little. Of this honey, how much more if
• 9:25
perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the plunder of
• 9:28
their enemies which they found. For now, there has been no great
• 9:32
slaughter among the Philistines. They struck the.
• 9:34
Philistines that day from Mitch Mash to age Allen.
• 9:38
The people. Were very faint, and the people
• 9:41
pounced on the plunder and took sheep, cattle and calves and
• 9:44
killed them on the ground, and the people ate them with the
• 9:47
blood. Then they told Saul saying,
• 9:50
Behold, the people are sinning against Yahweh in that they eat
• 9:53
meat with the blood. He said.
• 9:55
You have dealt treacherously. Roll a large stone to me.
• 9:59
Today, Saul said. Disperse yourselves among the
• 10:02
people and tell them, Every man bring me here his ox, and every
• 10:06
man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat, and don't sin
• 10:09
against Yahweh in eating meat with the blood.
• 10:12
All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and
• 10:16
killed them there. Saul built an altar to Yahweh.
• 10:20
This. Was the first altar that he.
• 10:21
Built to Yahweh. Saul said let's.
• 10:24
Go down after the Philistines by night and take plunder among
• 10:28
them until the morning light, and let's not leave a man of
• 10:31
  them. They said.
• 10:33
Do whatever seems good to you. Then the priest.
• 10:36
Said. Let's draw near here to God,
• 10:38
  Saul asked. Counsel of.
• 10:39
God shall I. Go down after the Philistines,
• 10:43
will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?
• 10:45
But he didn't answer him that day.
• 10:47
  Saul said. Draw near here.
• 10:49
All you chiefs of the. People and know and see in which
• 10:52
this sin has been today. For as Yahweh lives, who saves
• 10:57
Israel? Though it is in Jonathan, my
• 10:59
son. He shall surely die but there.
• 11:01
Was not a man among all the people who answered him.
• 11:05
Then he said to all Israel, you be on one side, and I and
• 11:08
Jonathan, my son, will be on the other side.
• 11:11
The people said to Saul. Do what seems good to you.
• 11:14
Therefore, Saul said to Yahweh, the God of Israel, show the
• 11:18
right. Jonathan and Saul were chosen,
• 11:21
but the people? Escaped, Saul said.
• 11:24
Cast. Lots between me and Jonathan.
• 11:26
My son Jonathan was selected. Then Saul said to Jonathan, tell
• 11:31
me what you have done. Jonathan told him and said I
• 11:34
certainly did taste a little honey with the end of the rod
• 11:37
that was in my hand, and behold I must die.
• 11:41
Saul said. God do so and more also.
• 11:44
For you shall. Surely die Jonathan.
• 11:46
The people said to Saul. Shall Jonathan die?
• 11:49
Who has worked this great salvation in Israel?
• 11:52
Far from it. As Yahweh lives.
• 11:54
There shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he
• 11:57
has. Worked with God today, so the
• 11:59
people. Rescued Jonathan, that he didn't
• 12:01
die. Then Saul went up from following
• 12:04
the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own
• 12:07
place. Now when Saul had taken the
• 12:10
Kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every
• 12:14
side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and
• 12:18
against Edom, and against the kings of Zoba, and against the
• 12:22
Philistines. Wherever he turned himself, he
• 12:25
defeated them. He did valiantly, and struck the
• 12:28
Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who
• 12:32
plundered them. Now the sons of Saul were
• 12:35
Jonathan, Ishvi and Malkishua and the names of his two
• 12:39
  daughters. Were these?
• 12:40
The name of the first born Merab and the name of the younger
• 12:43
  Mikkel. The name of.
• 12:45
Saul's wife. Was Ahinom the daughter of
• 12:47
Ahimas, the name of the captain of his army?
• 12:50
Was Abner the son of Nur, Saul's uncle?
• 12:54
Kish was the father of Saul. And Nur, the father of Abner,
• 12:57
was the son of Abeal. There was severe.
• 13:00
War against the Philistines all the days.
• 13:02
Of Saul. And when Saul saw any mighty
• 13:04
man, or any valiant man, he took him into his service.
