- 0:00The Michael Jackson movie was a mess, and so am I.
- 0:03I mean, clearly I tried to give Michael Jackson trade, but like
- 0:05I'm giving like Count Dracula's sparkly gay cousin.
- 0:09Hey guys, what's up? Some urgency and welcome.
- 0:10Welcome back to my channel. And I want to talk about the new
- 0:12Michael Jackson movie that just came out because I went and saw
- 0:15it this weekend and a few interesting things happened.
- 0:18And before I tell you what those are, I do have to preface by
- 0:21saying that like, I was going in completely blind.
- 0:24I had no idea of the controversies that were going on
- 0:26with this movie. I also did not know much of
- 0:28Michael Jackson's lore or drama or controversies or just his
- 0:32general story outside of the fact that like I heard some
- 0:34things about like him touching kids and of course the general
- 0:36music and like the through in music video.
- 0:38Like I am a local. If not, and honestly, I think
- 0:41local might be overstating it. Like I don't think I'm local.
- 0:44I think I might be foreigner. Like I might I might just be
- 0:47visitor vacationer, not even for pleasure, but like for a work
- 0:50trip for like 1 day. Like I dip my toe in and I dip
- 0:53my toe out. I don't know much.
- 0:55And I say that to say that like this review and these thoughts
- 0:57on this movie are really fresh, very clean, honest and naive.
- 1:02Like I went into this movie a complete blank slate as someone
- 1:05that like does not know much of anything about the lore.
- 1:08So I wanted to talk about what my thoughts were coming out of
- 1:10that with that perspective. And with that, I like the movie.
- 1:13I thought it was pretty cool. But then the second interesting
- 1:16thing happened and that I went on the Internet and I saw the
- 1:19discourse around the movie and learned about some of the real
- 1:22issues with the movie's production, the storylines, and
- 1:25more so as to why the movie that came out came out the way that
- 1:28it did in a way that kind of standardized guys over
- 1:31everything that I later learned about Michael Jackson.
- 1:33And I kind of wanted to talk about that because I think this
- 1:35is a interesting perspective as someone that, again, wasn't
- 1:38super into the Michael Jackson lore.
- 1:39Because I feel like for once, I represent a community of people
- 1:42that can be swayed by the media that we're consuming because I
- 1:45had no other touch point or other reference over Michael
- 1:48Jackson. So basically me and everyone
- 1:50else that had seen the movie without any prior knowledge to
- 1:53the Michael Jackson lore would walk away with a certain
- 1:55impression of Michael Jackson and the quality and production
- 1:57of the movie just based on the film.
- 1:59And who is more likely to be that group of people?
- 2:01It's younger people because we didn't really grow up with
- 2:03Michael Jackson alive and actively making music.
- 2:06So in this video, I wanted to talk about how this movie went
- 2:08about presenting Michael Jackson, the drummer behind the
- 2:10production, as well as the controversies around what was
- 2:13kept in the movie versus what was visibly absent or removed
- 2:17and getting into what. So like I said, I entered this
- 2:23movie basically a clean slate. And one thing that I definitely
- 2:26did notice about the movie was its pacing and specifically how
- 2:29they portrayed Michael. They spent a lot of time in this
- 2:31movie playing up the relation between Michael and his father
- 2:34and the beef that they had. And portrayed Michael as the
- 2:37sort of victim of his success and circumstance.
- 2:39Showing that he without a doubt have this God-given talent to
- 2:41sing and perform and had that star power quality.
- 2:44Who was ultimately being held back by his family, namely his
- 2:47dad who wanted to continue exploiting him and making money
- 2:49off of them. Which as far as I learned
- 2:51definitely did have. But like his father was terrible
- 2:53to him. And in the movie they show
- 2:54things like physical and psychological, but their dynamic
- 2:57takes up the majority of the movie.
- 2:58Like this movie starts off with the founding of the Jackson 5
- 3:01when they're all kids and ends off somewhere in the 80s where
- 3:03Michael essentially stands up to his father and chooses to go
- 3:06solo. And I think the ending scene is
- 3:08his first solo tour. Like him going out on his first
- 3:11solo tour like freshly light skinned.
- 3:13Like this is right when his vitiligo took over and he
- 3:15started using the cream to make him like the Michael Jackson
- 3:17that most people know him as. Which I found interesting as
- 3:19someone that wasn't super into the Michael Loic.
- 3:21And I knew there was a time where he was invisibly black and
- 3:23then a time where the vitiligo took over and there were
- 3:25allegations of him like bleaching his skin and like
- 3:27using these different creams to even out his skin tone and make
- 3:29him look how he looked for the latter half of his career.
- 3:32I just didn't know there was such a stark before and after
- 3:35and the after seemed to be once he went solo completely.
- 3:38But one thing that really shocked me about this movie was
- 3:39that the movie did not tell the whole story at all.
- 3:41Like it literally was from childhood to right before the
- 3:44peak of his career, or maybe some would even say like the
- 3:47peak of his career, which is fine and dandy, but that's
- 3:49omitting a whole 20 years of his career.
- 3:51That then was filled with controversy, even more hits and
- 3:55arguably some of the more juicy stuff that people would want to
- 3:57go and pay to see a documentary for.
- 3:58Because when you make a movie like Michael, you want to see
- 4:00like the whole life of Michael and not necessarily the making
- 4:04of Michael, because that's not what the movie was advertised to
- 4:06me as. Like that's at least not what I
- 4:08thought. Like I thought like we'd get
- 4:09like a full Life and Times of Michael.
- 4:11And also I'd say like, make sure just rename it to the making of
- 4:14Michael. That's what it gives.
- 4:15And I like like the alliteration.
- 4:16They're like, yeah, see. But it's clear that like through
- 4:19like this making of Michael that they still had a very pro
- 4:22Michael lens, which makes sense because I think his family's
- 4:25estate played a big part in this, addressing his
- 4:27insecurities of like looking perfect in front of a public
- 4:29stage and kind of like his low racial self esteem that he's had
- 4:31with his features as the plot follows him through.
- 4:34I think at least two different nose shops.
- 4:36The first one was explicit and I think the second one was more
- 4:38like low key because you just see like another bandage on his
- 4:40nose and his nose shrinks throughout the movie.
- 4:42You also see the loosening of his curl pattern as the movie
- 4:44progresses. Like it's things like this where
- 4:46it's like not explicitly said, but like still shown.
- 4:49So they have like the little nods there.
- 4:51And they also touched on like his little quirks and oddities
- 4:54with his personality, with him wanting to have all these
- 4:56different animals at his place. And his hyperfixation on like
- 5:00youth and kids. Things like his hyperfixation on
- 5:02Peter Pan Disney, being around kids, hanging out with sick kids
- 5:06in the hospital, which could be addressing some of the
- 5:08controversies that he had later in his life.
- 5:09Or could also be a commentary around like the Arrested
- 5:11Development that happens oftentimes with child stars and
- 5:13celebrities where oftentimes they mentally get stuck at the
- 5:17age that they become famous at. And since Michael became famous
- 5:19as a kid, that's where his mind's at.
- 5:21And with all that said, as a casual viewer, as a casual
- 5:23watcher, I enjoyed the movie. It was good.
- 5:25There was some left to be desired as far as like the
- 5:28topics that were covered and how far into his career that we saw.
- 5:31But if I had simply lifted at that and like, not gone to the
- 5:33Internet to, like, look more into it, I've been like, okay,
- 5:36that was a cool biopic. I guess.
- 5:38Not that very many biopics are actually good, but like, it was
- 5:41OK. And I might have considered
- 5:43myself like a casual Michael fan.
- 5:44Like, the songs were good, Like, the performances were good.
- 5:47And I really didn't have anything negative to say about
- 5:49Michael. Like, I didn't understand why
- 5:50people were mad. And then again, I looked on the
- 5:52Internet and I learned. And what I learned made me think
- 5:55about this whole thing differently.
- 5:56Because I think the reasoning behind why the movie was what it
- 5:59was is what moves us into the controversial side of this
- 6:02conversation. Because it seems like they did
- 6:03all this intentionally and that that was the end result, that
- 6:07they wanted people that didn't really know much about Michael
- 6:09to come to. Because looking more into this
- 6:15is becoming clear that the story of Michael in his career was
- 6:19definitely heavily sanitized in this movie to leave people
- 6:22looking at him in a favorable light.
- 6:23In a quote from Vanity Fair, the original intention of the film,
- 6:26according to King and Fukua, was to present a full, unbiased
- 6:29portrait of Michael Jackson, flaws and all, despite the heavy
- 6:32involvement in the Jackson estate, which is notorious for
- 6:35attempting to keep Jackson's image as clean as it can.
- 6:38And I really like this Vanity Fair article because it breaks
- 6:40down the timeline of like, when the Michael movie was at its
- 6:42inception and what the initial goals of it were to what ended
- 6:46up coming out. And in this quote specifically,
- 6:47they're talking about, like when they initially pitched this idea
- 6:50and we're going forward with this idea, they were trying to
- 6:51go with this, like, hyper authentic, like flaws and all,
- 6:54accurate representation of Michael Jackson, his career and
- 6:58the things that he did. And that was the movie that they
- 7:00were making up until 2024. And what happened in 2024, you
- 7:04may ask? Well, attorneys for the Jackson
- 7:06estate discovered a clause and a legal agreement from a case
- 7:09involving a 13 year old Jordan Chandler, who accused Jackson of
- 7:12sexual abuse in 1993. The clause prevents any
- 7:15depictions or mentions of Chandler and any dramatization
- 7:18of Jackson's life. And this caused the movie to
- 7:20essentially go back to the drawing board because I think
- 7:23they're going to include that in the movie's final act.
- 7:25Because after this was found out, the third act of the movie
- 7:27was completely rewritten and reshot after the fact.
- 7:30And rewrites and reshoots are nothing new to like Hollywood or
- 7:34like the process of movie making.
- 7:35But it is interesting to note that Jackson Estate footed the
- 7:37bill for all of these reshoots and had us end up with the
- 7:40ending that we did get where things were all nice and clean
- 7:43and ended on a high note, leaving Jackson to look amazing
- 7:47again, omitting some of the real raw and honestly vulnerable
- 7:50things that happened later in his career towards the more
- 7:53controversial parts of his life. And I honestly don't know how I
- 7:55feel about that. Like, I feel like we should
- 7:57definitely get the full story if we're going to do a biopic.
- 7:59Like if you're going to tell the story of Michael Jackson, then
- 8:01tell the story of Michael Jackson and don't just give us
- 8:03the ass 5 version for the sake of like preserving the legacy of
- 8:06someone. Like we deserve to know the full
- 8:08truth and the full truth and full recollection of history
- 8:11deserves to live on with that person.
- 8:14Like we can't just idolize all the great things that the
- 8:16greats, the most iconic people have done.
- 8:18We need a real representation of how they lived.
- 8:21And I think that's the case for everybody because that's a more
- 8:23human aspect. That's a more accurate biopic,
- 8:26no matter how amazing and talented they are, are not just
- 8:28a collection of their highlight reels.
- 8:29Like there is real struggle. There is real controversialness.
- 8:33There are real things that make a person a person, whether
- 8:36they're right or not. And if the point of not
- 8:38including more sensitive things was for the sake of like,
- 8:41representation for being accurate, If people want to deny
- 8:44some of the controversies, then like, that doesn't matter
- 8:46because the movie is already kind of inaccurate because it
- 8:48omits some very important people in Michael's life, like, namely,
- 8:51Janet Jackson. Janet Jackson is not mentioned
- 8:53or featured once in that entire movie about Michael Jackson's
- 8:56early life and rise to fame. And when I was watching the
- 8:59movie, I was thinking, I'm like, where's Janet?
- 9:01Because I know more about Janet Jackson than I do Michael
- 9:03Jackson. I'm like, all right, I know
- 9:04they're related. And I know they were like,
- 9:05where? Where's Janet?
- 9:07And in addition to people being cut, like it came out like the
- 9:10week before the movie came out, they're like Cat Graham, who was
- 9:12playing Diana Ross in the movie, had her scenes cut for legal
- 9:15issues. Like, the whole world out is a
- 9:16mess. Like you're cutting seemingly
- 9:18major plot points out of the movie a week where the movie
- 9:20airs, you're not telling important parts of the story and
- 9:22you're heavily sanitizing the narrative.
- 9:23Like I understand why things look really bad and really
- 9:26controversial because they might just be like this is a clean
- 9:29washing of Michael's legacy. And the reason why I care about
- 9:32this in general is because this movie is going to be a first
- 9:34touch point for a lot of people around Michael Jackson and the
- 9:38lore of Michael Jackson. Because the man has not been
- 9:40alive since 2009 and there are now 2 generations if not 2 1/2
- 9:44generations that were not alive during the same time that he
- 9:46was. So when people are learning
- 9:47about him for the first time or really getting to see him and
- 9:50learn about him for real, for real for the first time, they're
- 9:52not getting the full story and they're not getting the full
- 9:54truth. And it does not seem like anyone
- 9:56is happy about this because you have people from the Jackson
- 9:58family coming out being like, I, I don't support this.
- 10:00Like Paris Jackson for one. In September of last year, she
- 10:02said that I read one of the first drafts for the script and
- 10:05gave my notes about what was dishonest slash didn't sit right
- 10:08with me. And when they didn't address it,
- 10:09I moved on with my life. You got other people in the
- 10:11movie and playing the roles in the movie and then the life of
- 10:14Michael with how they want to be portrayed.
- 10:16Like the whole thing is just a general mess and just like not
- 10:19the point of the movie or why the movie was made.
- 10:21Like it just kind of gives like when a family member passes away
- 10:23and it's like up to the family to put together the funeral.
- 10:26And like you have everyone from the family trying to do their
- 10:27own thing and try to make it their own way when that just is
- 10:30not the point of, for one, the funeral.
- 10:32And like, what the person would have wanted and what the general
- 10:34consensus of everyone at the funeral really wants.
- 10:37Like, you know, weird analogy, but like, nothing seemed to go
- 10:40to plan. And I just generally think that
- 10:42it's irresponsible, in my opinion, to make a full feature
- 10:44film biopic about someone without telling the full story.
- 10:47And all of this, again, just makes me wonder, like, who is
- 10:49this for if seemingly everyone involved is unhappy and the true
- 10:52fans of Michael Jackson are also seemingly unhappy because the
- 10:55movie's not getting great reviews?
- 10:57Like, who is this for? Is it for the person that
- 11:00doesn't know anything about Michael Jackson?
- 11:01Maybe because, again, when I first saw it, I thought it was
- 11:04cool. I had a certain perception of
- 11:05Michael Jackson. I had a certain perception of
- 11:07how he came up, but is that necessarily the accurate
- 11:10representation? And you may say, like, if you
- 11:11want to know so bad, you can research it yourself, which,
- 11:13yeah, I can and I will. But like, will the average
- 11:17person do that? I don't think so.
