- 1:47Speaker 2: really appreciate it. With the season coming up, please do
- 1:50Speaker 2: use the hashtag Steelers Ireland to get involved to ask
- 1:53Speaker 2: some questions we'd love to hear from you. Obviously, the
- 1:56Speaker 2: second preseason game, first home preseason game for the Pittsburgh States,
- 2:00Speaker 2: taking place late Saturday night. That's going to be Sunday morning,
- 2:03Speaker 2: midnight our time against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Akasher Stadium.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Just to let you know, if you're listening to this
- 2:09Speaker 2: podcast this weekend, the game is on Virgin Media. You
- 2:12Speaker 2: can also listen on Off the Ball. How good is
- 2:14Speaker 2: that for an NFL fan from the island of Ireland
- 2:17Speaker 2: having a chance to watch a preseason game on TV
- 2:19Speaker 2: but also listen as well. Maybe you're on the road
- 2:22Speaker 2: home from away Assistant Croak Park the last big gig
- 2:25Speaker 2: arguably before the twenty twenty five NFL doubling game. If
- 2:28Speaker 2: you are in a road home from the concert, Paul
- 2:30Speaker 2: really won't listen to it. Big game ahead. Fantastic guest
- 2:33Speaker 2: this week, a woman that's going to be on the
- 2:35Speaker 2: sidelines tomorrow night. On Sunday morning, shall I say? Missy
- 2:39Speaker 2: Matthews returns to the Irish Theaters Podcast. A great listen,
- 2:42Speaker 2: great breakdown in the preseason so far. Here is Missy
- 2:45Speaker 2: on the Irish Theaters Podcast. Okay, another week all of
- 2:50Speaker 2: preseason action for the Staters coming up. We're delivel with
- 2:53Speaker 2: on the Irish Theaters Podcast to bring back very quickly
- 2:55Speaker 2: after her last appearance Staters Reporter obviously with the Pittsburgh Seeders.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Missy Matthews Missy. It's good to see you again. How
- 3:01Speaker 2: are you doing good.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I'm good. I'm counting down, you know, the days and weeks.
- 3:06Speaker 4: So we are in Dublin, in your territory, but you know,
- 3:10Speaker 4: wrapping up training camp in the preseason, and it's crazy
- 3:13Speaker 4: that it's almost here.
- 3:15Speaker 2: It's crazy because it's funny you mentioned that, like I
- 3:18Speaker 2: think it's like the go to question for any guest
- 3:20Speaker 2: on a podcast night. And I know we've spoke about
- 3:22Speaker 2: it before, but we were speaking about it off camera.
- 3:24Speaker 2: It's flying in now. Like again, we're what six weeks
- 3:27Speaker 2: os and obviously when it comes to that, there's so
- 3:30Speaker 2: much more involved in that football as well. And we'll
- 3:33Speaker 2: not talk about when you're going to get in, but
- 3:34Speaker 2: you know how excited you just just to get over
- 3:37Speaker 2: here and hopefully for yourself see a bit of the
- 3:39Speaker 2: city as well.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I'm pomped. It's a place I've never been to before.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Obviously, I understand the risk rich history nected to the
- 3:50Speaker 4: island because of the Rooney family and have heard so
- 3:52Speaker 4: much about it, and I just I was very blown
- 3:56Speaker 4: away when we went to London in twenty thirteen, you know,
- 3:59Speaker 4: standing on the pitch, it was just one of those
- 4:02Speaker 4: like crazy moments where you're like, am I seriously here
- 4:04Speaker 4: right now? And I feel like Croke Park has that
- 4:06Speaker 4: same mystique, so like can't wait to do that, but
- 4:09Speaker 4: just can't wait to explore and as you said, hopefully
- 4:12Speaker 4: do some like non work things. But I think even
- 4:16Speaker 4: work things in Ireland I would consider fun.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I know there's a lot planned which I know
- 4:21Speaker 2: people are going to find out, but very soon looking forward,
- 4:23Speaker 2: so I'm sure we'll get the chance to me as well.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Honestly looking forward to seeing not just Staters fans, but
- 4:28Speaker 2: fl fans in the city that weekend. It's going to
- 4:29Speaker 2: be really really cool. If you're neutral, you've got to
- 4:32Speaker 2: support the designated home team, folks, if you're listening to this,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you got support the Staters and this see really cool
- 4:37Speaker 2: time over here. We have the chance. So the preseason
- 4:40Speaker 2: games are on Virsion Media over here, which is one
- 4:43Speaker 2: of the national broadcasters over here, and also fans can
- 4:47Speaker 2: listen to the broadcast on OTV Sports Radio, so people
- 4:50Speaker 2: got a chance to check out the broadcast last weekend.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Do you like you've worked for the team for a while,
- 4:55Speaker 2: do you find it crazy and a good way that
- 4:57Speaker 2: fans now can actually be connected to the point where
- 5:00Speaker 2: they can sit at midnight on a Saturday night and
- 5:02Speaker 2: see everybody from the Staters media team talking about the game.
- 5:05Speaker 4: I mean, the outreach is crazy. I remember when it
- 5:09Speaker 4: was first, you know, we had like a Mexico broadcast team,
- 5:15Speaker 4: you know that was crazy, or even just being able
- 5:18Speaker 4: to see the games, and it just feels like it's
- 5:20Speaker 4: expanding and expanding.
- 5:21Speaker 3: But it makes total sense.
- 5:22Speaker 4: And I just think the Steelers are such a popular
- 5:25Speaker 4: team even you know, if you grew up in Pittsburgh
- 5:29Speaker 4: and moved away, you're still a Steelers fan and you're
- 5:31Speaker 4: raising your kids to be a Steelers fan. You don't
- 5:33Speaker 4: have to just be in the city. And I think it,
- 5:36Speaker 4: you know, we've talked about it before. Just anytime we
- 5:38Speaker 4: go on the road for an away game, it's insane
- 5:42Speaker 4: how many Steelers fans are there.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I met so like obviously went over to the Trope
- 5:47Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago, and we just missed each
- 5:48Speaker 2: other on that day for some reason. We'll obviously meete
- 5:51Speaker 2: up in Dublin. But I met fans, and look, I
- 5:54Speaker 2: know it's one thing people in Europe saying this, but
- 5:55Speaker 2: I met Staters fans that have flew into a family
- 5:58Speaker 2: day on the Sunday. I think it was a third
- 5:59Speaker 2: of all California from different states, like on the West Coast,
- 6:04Speaker 2: on the East coast, and when people, if you if
- 6:07Speaker 2: fans over here actually think about it, like the size
- 6:09Speaker 2: of Europe and the size of the US, that's a
- 6:11Speaker 2: big deal for people to fly into something like that.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I really liked how interactive it was. And the thing
- 6:17Speaker 2: that really got me, Missy was, yes, the players are
- 6:20Speaker 2: there to train to do their job, but there's so
- 6:23Speaker 2: many opportunities for fans to interact with the players at
- 6:26Speaker 2: the end, like the amount of players to stay behind
- 6:28Speaker 2: at the end and spoke to the fans on the hill,
- 6:29Speaker 2: and even that walk up and down. It's really specialism.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It's cool. Yeah, I think it. Like you said, it's
- 6:38Speaker 3: just when they leave the.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Locker room, there's barriers, but fans are literally right there,
- 6:43Speaker 4: like you're getting a high five from somebody if you
- 6:45Speaker 4: secure one of those spots. And I can tell you
- 6:47Speaker 4: that every morning, it did not matter how early I
- 6:50Speaker 4: was driving onto campus, cars lined up waiting to get
- 6:54Speaker 4: into the parking lot, which did not open until eleven am.
- 6:57Speaker 3: And that was only towards.
- 6:59Speaker 4: I think the first two days it was twelve and
- 7:01Speaker 4: then they moved it to eleven because there were just
- 7:03Speaker 4: people lining the outskirts of campus just to get a
- 7:07Speaker 4: parking spot and then just to get in. And you
- 7:11Speaker 4: we always caught like the running of the bulls, Like
- 7:14Speaker 4: when they open those gates, people run because they know
- 7:17Speaker 4: where some of the good spots are.
- 7:18Speaker 3: And then you're sitting there holding, you know, down the.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Forward of your spot for hours almost to get a
- 7:26Speaker 4: glimpse or a high five, or an autograph or a
- 7:29Speaker 4: glove of whatever of your favorite player or.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Just any stealer.
- 7:34Speaker 4: And it's really cool, even like Arthur Smith every day
- 7:38Speaker 4: walking up the one way, you know, everything is up
- 7:41Speaker 4: a hill, I feel like from that field, but going
- 7:44Speaker 4: towards where like the coaches and players dorm and have meetings.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Like every day I was there, I saw him signing.
- 7:51Speaker 4: You know, it's not just players. Coach Tomlin does it too.
- 7:55Speaker 4: It's just it is really cool. As you said, I
- 7:58Speaker 4: understand why people want to experience it. When Pat McAfee
- 8:02Speaker 4: and his crew were there, he was joking, but it's serious.
- 8:05Speaker 4: It's like if you grow up in Pittsburgh, it's a
- 8:07Speaker 4: rite of passage that you have to go to Steelers
- 8:09Speaker 4: training camp at some point in your life.
- 8:11Speaker 3: And even when I was talking to my brother who
- 8:13Speaker 3: lives in Florida.
- 8:14Speaker 4: The other day, he was like, what year did we
- 8:17Speaker 4: go from that one photo? You know, like you're trying
- 8:19Speaker 4: to think back, but you know that you were there,
- 8:23Speaker 4: and it's just.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Really cool to see, especially when the people.
- 8:27Speaker 4: From outside of the area come and when they're you know,
- 8:31Speaker 4: getting on a plane, running a hotel.
- 8:33Speaker 3: It's cool.
- 8:35Speaker 2: It is and I really would recommend anybody listening then
- 8:37Speaker 2: if you get a chance, try and go next year.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Maybe we can go at the same time. We will
- 8:40Speaker 2: see what happens. Yeah, And one of the big things
- 8:43Speaker 2: that have changed my seasons we last spoke to a
- 8:46Speaker 2: more developed extent is the impact on the obviously the
- 8:51Speaker 2: introduction of Aaron Rodgers to this team and how do
- 8:54Speaker 2: you find him in camp? Because I was really excited
- 8:57Speaker 2: to see how the offense was sort of jalleng even
- 8:59Speaker 2: being there one day. How do you find him coming
- 9:01Speaker 2: into the team so far.
- 9:03Speaker 4: I think like he is everything and more that they
- 9:06Speaker 4: hoped for. I know coach Tomlin just talked about how
- 9:10Speaker 4: he when they were talking on the phone before Aaron
- 9:13Speaker 4: decided to come here, even before he signed.
- 9:16Speaker 3: It was like he wanted to know his.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Why, Like why at forty one four time MVP, we've
- 9:21Speaker 4: won a super Bowl already, Like why do you want
- 9:23Speaker 4: to go to a new.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Team, Why do you want to start from scratch? Why
- 9:26Speaker 3: do you want to play with young kids?
- 9:28Speaker 4: And he's like I was so comfortable with his why
- 9:31Speaker 4: and his love of the game, which is how I
- 9:35Speaker 4: feel like coach views it, like the love of the game,
- 9:37Speaker 4: almost like a steward of it, and even from a
- 9:41Speaker 4: historical perspective. But he has been super accommodating. Like when
- 9:47Speaker 4: we had a chance to do a sit down interview
- 9:49Speaker 4: with him, it wasn't rushed, He wasn't, you know, giving
- 9:52Speaker 4: quick answers.
- 9:53Speaker 3: He was extremely articulate and thoughtful.
- 9:57Speaker 4: He's funny, you know, and I just you see why
- 10:01Speaker 4: the players gravitate towards him. It's even the small things,
- 10:06Speaker 4: like when they're warming up, he makes sure he's always
- 10:09Speaker 4: by the defensive guys, you know, like he's not with
- 10:11Speaker 4: offensive guys and that's small and little, but you know,
- 10:14Speaker 4: he's going with the third string guys. He does not care.
- 10:18Speaker 4: He eats lunch with different people. He's just really made
- 10:22Speaker 4: it a point to like immerse himself and to let
- 10:26Speaker 4: people see who he is and not what they think
- 10:30Speaker 4: he is, if that makes sense. But I just think
- 10:33Speaker 4: even you know, he didn't touch a football other than
- 10:36Speaker 4: warming up in Jacksonville with Pat fried Ruth and DK Metcalf,
- 10:39Speaker 4: but he had, you.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Know, one of the coaches.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Headsets on during the game and just helping guys, talking
- 10:48Speaker 4: to Arthur Smith. It's just he does everything right, if
- 10:52Speaker 4: that makes sense. But it's from a very genuine place, and.
- 10:56Speaker 2: It's one of those things for people listening and they
- 10:58Speaker 2: might not get too close to the eyes action when
- 11:00Speaker 2: they're not there, like I seeing at the end of
- 11:02Speaker 2: practice he sat down and it was a warm day.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I think anybody, whether you were running or not, was
- 11:08Speaker 2: probably tired after even standing there for a couple of hours,
- 11:10Speaker 2: never mind dannathing else. He sat and took pictures of
- 11:14Speaker 2: kids who were on the field for maybe ten twenty minutes.
- 11:17Speaker 2: We got a chance to chat to him, and the
- 11:18Speaker 2: thing that stood out to me was just how not
- 11:21Speaker 2: not chilled, but also very like assertive he was. And
- 11:24Speaker 2: he just seems very relaxed at this point in his career,
- 11:27Speaker 2: so it's very it's going to be very interesting to
- 11:29Speaker 2: see how he does with his team, and also it's
- 11:31Speaker 2: obviously very exciting. And that comes into really sort of
- 11:34Speaker 2: looking back on last week on this game in Jacksonville.
- 11:38Speaker 2: It's hard to pinpoint certain things from preseason, but we
- 11:42Speaker 2: know there's a lot of first stringers that might not play.
- 11:44Speaker 2: But if you had, if you had any key takeaways
- 11:47Speaker 2: from that game this see what would they have been.
- 11:50Speaker 5: I mean the offense used the middle of the field,
- 11:53Speaker 5: they were moving the ball, they took care of the football,
- 11:55Speaker 5: there were no interceptions, and yeah, I know it's not
- 12:00Speaker 5: Rogers in the first team, but I just think that
- 12:02Speaker 5: it was a refreshing thing to see coming from an
- 12:05Speaker 5: Arthur Smith offense in year two.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Just some of the things.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Even Mason Brudolph, I mean, he was only gone for
- 12:12Speaker 4: a year, but it feels like he came back like
- 12:14Speaker 4: rejuvenated or something, and really mesh as well with what
- 12:18Speaker 4: Arthur is asking him to do. And I think the defense,
- 12:23Speaker 4: like I just I cannot wait until we can finally
- 12:27Speaker 4: see the three headed monster, as Cam Hayward called it
- 12:29Speaker 4: of Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Junior and Darius lay out
- 12:33Speaker 4: there together with you know, all of the rest of
- 12:36Speaker 4: the first teamers, just to see it in a game,
- 12:39Speaker 4: because they're talking a lot about it very confidently, and
- 12:44Speaker 4: I don't think you do that if you're not that confident.
- 12:48Speaker 4: You know, it's it takes a little bit, I think,
- 12:52Speaker 4: to say, you know, we're gonna be one of the
- 12:54Speaker 4: top defenses.
- 12:56Speaker 3: You don't just say that. It's not, you know, some
- 12:59Speaker 3: wishy washy thing. And I think they mean it. So
- 13:03Speaker 3: I'm very excited to see how it all plays out.
- 13:05Speaker 4: I love all of the draft picks that they got
- 13:08Speaker 4: to but I mean, you know, free agency and trades
- 13:11Speaker 4: are just insane. When you go back and look at
- 13:14Speaker 4: the timeline of when the season ended in Baltimore and
- 13:17Speaker 4: then all the pieces that moved or came all the
- 13:22Speaker 4: way up to training camp.
- 13:23Speaker 3: It's nuts.
- 13:25Speaker 2: It's great to see. And if we sort of look
- 13:27Speaker 2: ahead to this week, it's going to be Sunday morning
- 13:29Speaker 2: for us. It's a Saturday night obviously, Sunday morning midnight
- 13:33Speaker 2: time our time. It's on Virgin Media on television, and
- 13:36Speaker 2: also you can listen on Off the Ball Sports radio.
- 13:39Speaker 2: You can get the go Light op to listen there
- 13:41Speaker 2: Steelers home open or in the preseason to an extent
- 13:45Speaker 2: against the Books. When we get down to now where
- 13:48Speaker 2: we've got last preseason games, mess say, we know when
- 13:50Speaker 2: we get to that second and third game, we are
- 13:52Speaker 2: seeing someone whose guys sacond first tringers. But still a
- 13:55Speaker 2: lot to look forward to because we try and just
- 13:57Speaker 2: get better every week. This week against the Books.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that's it. It's a process. And
- 14:03Speaker 3: when it was.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Four games, you know it was the third game where
- 14:06Speaker 4: you would see people. Now it's kind of usually the
- 14:09Speaker 4: second game because there's only three preseason games where you see.
- 14:12Speaker 3: More of the ones.
- 14:13Speaker 4: But even like a Calvin Austen, you know he's missed
- 14:17Speaker 4: some practice time because he's been hurt.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Like, I want to see him out on the field.
- 14:19Speaker 3: I don't care which quarterbacks throwing to him.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Because he has the ability to continue to have his
- 14:26Speaker 4: arrow pointed up. As coach Melan said, building off of
- 14:28Speaker 4: last year Caleb Johnson, you know he needs as many
- 14:32Speaker 4: rookie snaps as he can get in the preseason.
- 14:36Speaker 3: I think obviously you.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Know some good and some bad from that first game,
- 14:39Speaker 4: but I just want to see him continue to work
- 14:42Speaker 4: he is one of those guys that has that mentality.
- 14:44Speaker 4: He's physical, he is you know, puts his head down
- 14:48Speaker 4: and does all the right things as a rookie and
- 14:51Speaker 4: really listens to a lot of the veterans and whatnot.
- 14:54Speaker 3: But it'll be exciting to see.
- 14:57Speaker 4: We don't know exactly who's playing or who's not just yet,
- 15:01Speaker 4: but I think even like you said, it's the only
- 15:03Speaker 4: home game, it's the home opener for the preseason.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Does coach announce the offense or the defense?
- 15:09Speaker 4: Does he do the offense and let Aaron Rodgers run
- 15:12Speaker 4: out that tunnel whether he's playing or not, Like you know,
- 15:14Speaker 4: I that's my boys are going to the game with
- 15:16Speaker 4: my husband and they're like, who's playing, who's not? You know,
- 15:20Speaker 4: they want to know, and it's I just think there's
- 15:23Speaker 4: a buzz and there's excitement, Not that there isn't every season,
- 15:26Speaker 4: but there's just there's something slightly different.
- 15:29Speaker 3: And I think it's because.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Of all the changes that have happened and how it
- 15:33Speaker 4: seems to be coming to fruition from La Trobe now
- 15:37Speaker 4: back into Pittsburgh.
- 15:39Speaker 3: As we're what three weeks away from the season starting.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I mean, it's crazy, scary times scary times and a
- 15:46Speaker 2: great way, as we say in art and scary Biscuits said,
- 15:49Speaker 2: I'm really really pumped. This is probably the last time
- 15:52Speaker 2: we're going to have you on I'd say before that
- 15:54Speaker 2: Dublin week on this podcast when I'll ask you this
- 15:56Speaker 2: before we go, And really interesting to start to the season.
- 16:00Speaker 2: That's on the road week one. We all know obviously
- 16:02Speaker 2: Justin Fay is gonna. Actually had the chance to meet
- 16:04Speaker 2: him two weeks ago and we talked about that and
- 16:06Speaker 2: he said he cannot wait until lack games. What's gonna
- 16:10Speaker 2: be interesting that And then obviously home opener, go on
- 16:13Speaker 2: the road East Coast. I like that East Coast game
- 16:15Speaker 2: before the trip to Ireland. It's a nice start to
- 16:18Speaker 2: the season. And look for for anah and like, well
- 16:20Speaker 2: how many games, like every game is so important? Do
- 16:23Speaker 2: you like that starts? And just watch your thoughts with
- 16:25Speaker 2: those first few weeks just before we wrap up.
- 16:27Speaker 3: I like the one o'clock starts selfishly, but I feel like,
- 16:31Speaker 3: especially that week three, if you're gonna go on the
- 16:33Speaker 3: road before you have to travel to Dublin, it better
- 16:37Speaker 3: be an early game, not coming off like a Sunday
- 16:39Speaker 3: night or something. And I know you know, once.
- 16:41Speaker 4: The schedule's out there, it's not that you can change it,
- 16:43Speaker 4: but we can all complain about it. But I do
- 16:46Speaker 4: think it's you know, Justin Field's playing his old team,
- 16:49Speaker 4: Aaron Rodgers playing his old team, and then week two
- 16:52Speaker 4: it's like the DK Metcalf Bowl, you know, with the
- 16:57Speaker 4: Seahawks coming to town.
- 16:58Speaker 1: So it is.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Interesting and I think think, you know, the New England
- 17:01Speaker 4: Patriots are a different New England Patriots team, then we're
- 17:04Speaker 4: all used to seeing a different head coach.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Even they're a rookie running back.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I've seen a lot of flashes from him, just you know,
- 17:11Speaker 4: reading things and trying to stay up with the rest
- 17:13Speaker 4: of the league.
- 17:14Speaker 3: So it'll definitely be interesting for sure.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I more so wish our bye week was later
- 17:22Speaker 4: than what happens before we go to Dublin, but I
- 17:26Speaker 4: also kind of understand why.
- 17:27Speaker 3: It's that week.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it's one of those things, I guess when you're
- 17:31Speaker 2: an international fund it's like sometimes it works and sometimes
- 17:34Speaker 2: as well, like the league just put it down there
- 17:36Speaker 2: as well, So like I actually like it. I like
- 17:38Speaker 2: the way that there's a bit of a reset there
- 17:40Speaker 2: and they come back, especially because we don't know how
- 17:41Speaker 2: the season's going to start, and hopefully it starts well
- 17:45Speaker 2: on the rolling in the Dublinsy, you know, and I
- 17:47Speaker 2: will see what happens. Wish you all the very very
- 17:49Speaker 2: best over the next few weeks, Missy, and for anyone listening,
- 17:52Speaker 2: you can check out the staters broadcast obviously on Virgin
- 17:54Speaker 2: Media over the next couple of weeks. Listen as they
- 17:56Speaker 2: said on o TV Sports Radio, get your fix of
- 17:59Speaker 2: Missy on the tape there as well, and em measy,
- 18:01Speaker 2: we'll chat to you soon. Thanks so much for coming on.
