Transcript
- 0:00It's Most Things Kenobi, an elegant podcast for a more
- 0:04civilized fandom. Hi everyone, welcome to another
- 0:20episode of Most Things Kenobi, a podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and
- 0:24all things Star Wars. I'm your host, Lauren.
- 0:27And I'm your host, Leanne. And this is our 200th episode.
- 0:33That's crazy. It's so cool.
- 0:37Go us. It's crazy to me that my mind is
- 0:40blown. We had intended to do, I know
- 0:44and we used to do every week, which I don't know how we
- 0:46survived that. We we wouldn't.
- 0:48Like you said when we talked the other day, we would have gotten
- 0:50to here a lot sooner, but we had to cut down because it was too
- 0:54much. Life.
- 0:55But we're here 200 episodes later, we're here.
- 0:58We're still having just as much fun, if not more than when we
- 1:01first started I. Say, I think so, Yeah.
- 1:04I think we're still not losing steam.
- 1:08People are like, are you ever going to run out of things to
- 1:10talk about? Oh please.
- 1:12No, no. Who US?
- 1:16No, never. Especially if they keep coming
- 1:21out with new shows, which is what we're talking about today.
- 1:24But. Absolutely.
- 1:24Yeah, that's actually what we're talking about.
- 1:26But we did something special for our 200th.
- 1:29We've recorded it already, it's just a matter of when I get it
- 1:32edited. But we did.
- 1:33We were planning to do like a bigger thing for our episode and
- 1:37then if mall 200 got yeah, hijacked by mall so.
- 1:43Sam Whitler stepped in. Who were we to say no?
- 1:47Yeah, so we are we did do something special.
- 1:53It's on our Patreon, but it is free on our Patreon.
- 1:56It's only going to be over there on Patreon.
- 1:58And if it's not there when this episode comes out, it will
- 2:02definitely be there by the next episode when we release the next
- 2:05episode. So we'll make sure to post it on
- 2:08our social media and everything like that when it's it's up and
- 2:11available. But it'll be for the free tier.
- 2:14You won't have to pay to see it. And not only that, we're on
- 2:17camera the whole time. So yes, yeah, it's a video
- 2:21episode where we do our whole thing.
- 2:22You can see behind the scenes how we do our intros and
- 2:26everything. I don't think we messed any up
- 2:28that time. I think we did it pretty good.
- 2:31I know it's. Almost like having the camera on
- 2:32makes us more professional. It's.
- 2:35More pressure. Yeah, it is freeing to not be on
- 2:40camera. It is.
- 2:41It is because some days you come home from work and you just
- 2:47wanna be off camera. Yeah.
- 2:49Like today it's 80° and I took a walk and not camera ready right
- 2:54now differently feel gritty. But anyway, we're here today to
- 3:01talk about Mall Shadow Lord episodes one through 4.
- 3:07Right. 44 episodes. Yeah, in a row.
- 3:12We're going to try to release within each week moving forward,
- 3:16but this time around we just had to, we had to wait.
- 3:19So we're doing 4 at a time, which was a lot.
- 3:22It was a lot to digest. Yeah, especially it's always
- 3:27more difficult, I feel when you're first getting to learn
- 3:30who everyone is, where everyone is at in this timelines or a
- 3:34thing, character names and things.
- 3:37Yeah, it's a little confusing at first, but.
- 3:40I took Kevin's a page out of Kevin's book this time and
- 3:44watched. With captions, subtitles,
- 3:46subtitles, yeah. Yeah, it really helped.
- 3:49I thought of Kevin as well, but I did not turn the subtitles on.
- 3:52I powered through regardless. I usually don't until, like, my
- 3:56second watch, but I knew I wasn't going to have time to
- 3:58watch it more than once, so I was like, all right, let's put
- 4:01him on this time. So I spent half the time
- 4:03reading, but that's fine. That's fine.
- 4:06Yeah. I want to start by saying that
- 4:08this is possibly the most beautiful animation I've ever
- 4:11seen. Exactly what I said.
- 4:13One of the most visually stunning animations to date to
- 4:18date. I was.
- 4:19I was so into the lighting throughout all four of these
- 4:24episodes. The lighting was.
- 4:27It was so good. Yeah.
- 4:30And it it's kind of like Clone Wars, but really it's not.
- 4:35It's it's like elevated Clone Wars.
- 4:38There's more detail, more saturation.
- 4:41The action, the movement, is so much more fluid and natural than
- 4:47it used to be. I agree.
- 4:50I agree with that it was sound mixing.
- 4:53Some of those sounds were like it was.
- 4:56I really did feel immersed. Like this is a hell of a good
- 4:59job for an animation like it's. Yeah.
- 5:02It's really good. See, I watched it on my TV and I
- 5:04want to watch it again with headphones on because it's
- 5:07totally. Different.
- 5:08Yeah, and I hear that. I've, I've heard that they
- 5:11incorporate Sam's scream into his lightsaber sound effect.
- 5:17Oh, goody. And that was not coming through
- 5:19on the television. But I, I'm sure it would be more
- 5:22noticeable on with headphones. So I want to rewatch at some
- 5:26point cause yes, the sound design and the music struck me
- 5:31right away. Kevin Kiner is back, but he also
- 5:34is he's composing with his daughter and son, his daughter
- 5:39Deanna and his son Sean. And they they worked together on
- 5:43this and it has that great Clone Wars season 7, I would say.
- 5:49Yeah, yeah, yeah, yes. Plus more John Williams feel I
- 5:53think. It was very epic at at times.
- 5:56It had that epic grand feeling of John Williams.
- 6:00Yes, yeah. Yeah, it was.
- 6:02Kevin Kiner's a a genius. He is.
- 6:06And I've seen other shows now where I've noticed his name,
- 6:09because now I know his name and I recognize it where the music
- 6:12strikes me and then I see his name in the credits.
- 6:14I'm like, that's why the music's so damn good.
- 6:17He's he's so talented and I think it's really cool that he's
- 6:21composing with his kids. That's, I think that's a nice
- 6:24touch too. I didn't know that.
- 6:25You always come with the facts, the deep facts.
- 6:28Well, I wanted to see if he was the one who was the composer,
- 6:31and then I saw these other names with him and I looked him up and
- 6:34they said that it's his daughter and son.
- 6:36So. Very nice.
- 6:38I also looked up the writer because I was, I was curious.
- 6:42The lead writer is Matt Mischnovitz.
- 6:46I think it's how you say it, Mischnovitz.
- 6:48Sorry if I mispronounced it, but he wrote some Clone Wars
- 6:52episodes that we like a lot. So which ones?
- 6:57That was interesting. Yeah, the Citadel arc.
- 7:00Hell yeah, the Umbara arc. Oh, oh fuck.
- 7:09What a what a switch the fuck a punk crowd.
- 7:16What else? Oh my God, that's.
- 7:19Funny the last ones were season 7, the 1st 4 episodes.
- 7:27I don't know what that arc is considered like.
- 7:29Maybe the bad batch arc or the the one where they find Echo?
- 7:32Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:34I, I think we've said before we don't watch Season 7 too often
- 7:38because it's so heartbreaking. Less less familiar with those,
- 7:42but. Yeah, I don't know.
- 7:44Once is enough. It's like, it's like the lawless
- 7:47for me. Once in a blue moon for me.
- 7:51Yeah, when you when you're ready to just feel like shit, you sit
- 7:54down to watch that. Yeah.
- 7:58Well, I thought it was interesting that he wrote those
- 8:01Clone Wars episodes because we love those so much.
- 8:07But I know you, you said you were kind of struggling with
- 8:09this show a bit, The mall show. Here I go.
- 8:13No, I, I. So whenever the episodes ended,
- 8:18I was kind of sad that they ended because I wanted more.
- 8:21It always ended on like a note where I was like, Oh no no, you
- 8:25know more. But I find myself gravitating
- 8:28towards certain pieces of this timeline of the the show's
- 8:32plots, like the plot lines more than others.
- 8:36The reason I struggled with episode 1 of this 4 episode set
- 8:39is because it was mostly about like the criminal underground.
- 8:44And that stuff just doesn't interest me on a, on a like a
- 8:47whole level has nothing to do with Star Wars.
- 8:49It's just something that I'm just not drawn to.
- 8:52But when I finally realized who Devin was and what her and her
- 8:57Master, what like what that was, I was like, OK, all right, here
- 9:02we go. And the other thing was the cop,
- 9:04like the lead investigator, I'm into him.
- 9:08There's some interest there, yeah.
- 9:09And so it was enough to keep me going, obviously, but I was
- 9:12going to watch the whole thing anyway because Sam Whitworth.
- 9:14But like, you know. Yeah, what I'm kind of realizing
- 9:19is they are pulling and I didn't realize this because I knew it.
- 9:23I realized that after I kind of watched some Youtubes to help
- 9:28me. They're referencing the mall
- 9:30comic. Oh God, what's it called?
- 9:33Shadow Lord or I know the show is called Shadow Lord but there
- 9:38was like a one off comic that they released and apparently
- 9:42that's where like the death of Marians came from.
- 9:45That's where Rook cast who's the Mandalorian female that works
- 9:50with him closely. That's where she came from.
- 9:53Because I was like, who the hell are these people?
- 9:56Exactly that. I struggled with that because I
- 9:58had no idea like what? And am I stupid or like what,
- 10:05what is the master plan with any of this that Maul talked about?
- 10:08I was trying, I was struggling. Is he, what is the his goal with
- 10:12what is the goal of this show? How does it tie into the greater
- 10:15Star Wars timeline? So I think, I think there might
- 10:20be a book in there that I'm, you know, not familiar with, but
- 10:25then it is ultimately trying to tie in with Solo.
- 10:30I got that. Yeah.
- 10:32Another obscure one off thing that you wouldn't find like
- 10:36important. What also like he's in solo for
- 10:40about two seconds The. Last two seconds.
- 10:43Yeah, to like tie in with that is it's like OK, how and why,
- 10:47but. But is it going to bridge into
- 10:50Season 7 of Clone Wars? It has to, right?
- 10:54And and don't forget Rebels, where is Ezra?
- 10:56Like he's got to come down the line too.
- 10:59And that whole storyline. So season 7 has happened
- 11:02already. Oh, that's right.
- 11:05I'm stupid. You're right.
- 11:06The Empire's already in place. Dumb.
- 11:08I'm dumb. So.
- 11:10We're not the only ones, like even Star Wars explained was
- 11:13like, this timeline's a little fuzzy and they know way more
- 11:16than than I do. They are familiar with like
- 11:20almost all the material that's out there and they were
- 11:23confused. So it's after season 7.
- 11:27It's after like Lawless. Remember after Lawless Palpatine
- 11:34shows up and takes Mall. Yeah, right.
- 11:37Then these Rook cast and these other some other Mandalorians
- 11:44who remained loyal to him after he killed Prvisla broke him out
- 11:47of jail wherever Palpatine was keeping him.
- 11:51Right, right. And then they go back to
- 11:54Mandalore, right? For season 7 of Clone Wars,
- 11:58right? Yes, that's correct.
- 12:00Just. Trying to keep it all.
- 12:01Ahsoka Yeah, the whole thing with the.
- 12:03Yep. Yes, and now he's running run
- 12:07amok off into the Galaxy. And I guess this is what he's
- 12:10doing before he meets Ezra because he's old.
- 12:14By the time he meets Ezra, he's kind of like an old man.
- 12:17Quote UN quote. Yes, yes, so Ezra is before
- 12:21Kenobi ends his ass again. Again, again.
- 12:25Also, were you thinking the entire time everyone's dueling
- 12:28him that Kenobi's the only one that actually won any of the
- 12:30fights? So.
- 12:32Yes, I was. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:36Fucking dope Obi Wan. Yeah, and I don't want to jump
- 12:39ahead, but you could tell when Maul is fighting Devin that he's
- 12:45just toying with her, like allowing her to feel powerful,
- 12:49but that he was holding back completely.
- 12:52Yeah, we will get to that. Yes, sorry.
- 12:55But OK. So pre not visa but pre Ezra
- 13:00which is close post. It's post Visla, literally and.
- 13:05That's. Pre Ezra.
- 13:08Yes, Jesus. OK, got it.
- 13:12I'm locked in. So the thing I think is kind of
- 13:15cool is this overlaps a bit with the and or timeline like and or
- 13:23is a young man right now, He's like a teenager at this point,
- 13:27maybe about to go to jail for the first time, or maybe he's
- 13:31just because he he's at the battle of Jim Beam, whatever the
- 13:36fuck that is. Remember, and that's also where
- 13:38Han Solo is. So there's like some overlap
- 13:41with these stories. It literally I thought you said
- 13:45the Battle of Jim Beam. That is what I said because I
- 13:48could never pronounce what it's actually called.
- 13:51Jim. Beam.
- 13:52Yeah. Whatever the fuck it is OK?
- 13:56All right, All right. Carry on.
- 13:59Yeah. Yeah, that's what I call it.
- 14:01Jim Beam, Battle of Jim Beam. Everyone's drunk there.
- 14:05I love it. Drunk and happy.
- 14:08Always. Yes.
- 14:12Anyway, so this what is this planet called?
- 14:17Janix Because the reason I I looked it up and I remembered it
- 14:20is because I thought of Rocky Horror Picture Shows Picture
- 14:23Show. Damn it, Janix, Janet, damn it,
- 14:30Janet. But it's Janix.
- 14:33See how I did that? I see.
- 14:35Yeah, this is great. All right, well.
- 14:37Whatever gets it to stick in my brain, you know?
- 14:40Is this new? I I'm not familiar.
- 14:43It is, I think. It was.
- 14:44It's a uh huh. It's a new urban planet with
- 14:49multiple layers, like levels like Coruscant.
- 14:53It has weather. I don't know if you noticed that
- 14:55it had weather because I was like, oh, this, this is not
- 14:59Coruscant. And that's when I looked it up
- 15:01And I first of all, I love the neon aesthetic of this planet.
- 15:10Yes, this planet is Gotham City meets Blade Runner.
- 15:14Yes, you got it. You got it.
- 15:18That's the vibe I got. It's very cool.
- 15:20I love it. I love it.
- 15:21I do too. I'm here for it.
- 15:24I would visit that that planet just visiting.
- 15:27I don't want to stay. I just want to visit and like
- 15:31check out the street vendors. Well, this.
- 15:33I mean, it must be very early on, right?
- 15:35Because the Empire is not there yet.
- 15:38Well, until. Until.
- 15:40The hour, yeah. Oh the music at the end of that
- 15:43episode 4 was so good. I don't, I know.
- 15:46I was, I was waiting for it. You know, the classic, it
- 15:50reminded me of the way the Star Destroyers over Jetta City.
- 15:54You know, it's like there's it just literally parks on top of
- 15:59you and even it's so cool. It's so, it's so good.
- 16:03It's so well done and that's why I think Kevin Keiner really
- 16:07bridges the music well because he has this slight touch of
- 16:12Clone Wars in it, but he brings in that George, George, sorry,
- 16:17the Judd Williams music, but I can't speak, so just ignore me.
- 16:25It was, it's, it's so good. Those are the those are like the
- 16:29highlights, the music, the aesthetics, the animation style.
- 16:33Holy cow, the sounds. I think the acting is really
- 16:38good too. I, I really like that.
- 16:41I don't know if it's how to describe it.
- 16:45Like the tapestry of voices, the choices that they've made for
- 16:50the different accents and everything I think is so
- 16:53beautiful. And multiple times I was like, I
- 16:56got to look up who that is. That's such an interesting
- 16:59voice. Totally.
- 17:02And I just, I love, I have such a soft spot in my heart for
- 17:05Dennis Haysbert as an actor because he's in a bunch of
- 17:09things that I loved growing up. So that he gets to voice a Jedi
- 17:12Master is so cool. And I really, really liked that
- 17:17character. The like the species.
- 17:20Yeah, and. It's a good choice.
- 17:23I love like. Robin Hood or something with the
- 17:26pointed hood. I was like, yes, the outlaw
- 17:29living in the forest. He's like a miniature Gandalf
- 17:34with his medal. Yes, Oh my God, he is.
- 17:39You know, I just love I'd. He reminds me of a grown up
- 17:43turtle person from Felicia. Yeah, I haven't looked up.
- 17:48What? But he has that long head in the
- 17:50back and. Yeah, like it's almost like a
- 17:52bone. I don't know, he's cool.
- 17:54I really liked him very much, and it's nice to see a female
- 17:59Twilac not in scantily clad. You know, anytime we get a
- 18:04female Twilac or Twilac, you know, whether it's Hara Sandola.
- 18:08Yeah, it's refreshing. Or wielding A lightsaber.
- 18:12I'm here for it, yeah. She's not just a pin up girl on
- 18:15the wall of some mechanic shop in the background, right?
- 18:20Yes, I liked her character too because she was so conflicted
- 18:24and very. Confused.
- 18:25Loved it. And it's so understandable too,
- 18:29because he's older, obviously, so he's more indoctrinated into
- 18:32like the the idea of not compromising your values.
- 18:38And she is feeling so raw and to watch her Master debase himself
- 18:44and beg and then still not meet with kindness, you know, right,
- 18:50Right. She makes a lot of sense to me
- 18:53and why she's conflicted and why she's so such a good match for
- 19:00Maul. It's like such an interesting
- 19:02dynamic. Oh, very, very.
- 19:04And I really liked. Oh, man, I said to myself.
- 19:08I said to myself, I'm going to end up agreeing with Darth Maul
- 19:13in this show, am I not? No, I know.
- 19:17You know what I mean? Yeah, I do.
- 19:19He's very, very good at manipulation.
- 19:24Because you do start to believe him, and then you're like, wait
- 19:27a minute. You.
- 19:28Murdered a village of people to get Obi Wan Kenobi to show up.
- 19:32That was not doing what you must.
- 19:34That was just murder. Yeah, he he, his execution style
- 19:40leaves little to be desired. But I I like Oh, and Sam
- 19:46Wittler, so good. But I like the way he presents
- 19:50things in a twisted way where it seems like it's oh, I'm, I'm
- 19:55having a moment of clarity. Perhaps he is correct.
- 19:59But you know, you know, deep down or we the viewer know deep
- 20:03down. Don't do it.
- 20:03Don't do it. Yeah.
- 20:05They, we have said this on previous episodes, the Sith prey
- 20:09on weak and vulnerable individuals who are emotionally
- 20:13struggling. And that's Devin right there.
- 20:16Yeah, then they don't even need to lie to you.
- 20:19They just use their perspective to recast, you know what, the
- 20:25Jedi that they're trying to manipulate or the person, It
- 20:28doesn't have to be a Jedi, whatever they're thinking.
- 20:30And it's he's sitting there pouring tea.
- 20:34That is an old Japanese tradition.
- 20:37Yeah, and he does it, I think with previous in a previous
- 20:40like, you know, back in the day, I think they drink the same tea.
- 20:44I thought it was a great effect. That's what you do when you
- 20:46invite someone into your home, you know, to to level the
- 20:50playing field, so to speak, like a dignitary would offer that to
- 20:55anyone of rank, no matter what your, your like status was.
- 21:00And I was like, oh, this is good, This is good.
- 21:03And the way he says that you, I can tell you have this idea of
- 21:08me in your mind and I can be that for you if that's what you
- 21:10need. Oh, but this is me showing you
- 21:15that I have many sides. I loved that approach because I
- 21:19was like, yeah, I kind of like, this is charming.
- 21:22It's very seductive, so to speak.
- 21:25Not in like a very sexy way. I mean, it's not, it's not sexy,
- 21:29but it's. Still, it's like into listening.
- 21:33Exactly. But I also liked how they had
- 21:35her constantly trying to find an exit, plot plotting it.
- 21:39That's the Jedi in her, her training, plotting to find an
- 21:42exit, find a way out, find a weakness in the structure.
- 21:45This, that, the other. I loved that.
- 21:47I love that. Yeah, and Maul kept saying even
- 21:50with a weapon, your instinct is to run.
- 21:53And it's more of like a Jedi thing where you're it's
- 21:56passivity. You're not supposed to fight
- 21:58unless you have to, right? And why would she if she doesn't
- 22:01have to? Granted, I do think she probably
- 22:03has a lot of fear because she was really young when the Jedi
- 22:08fell apart. That is the thing I fucking
- 22:11loved about all four of these episodes.
- 22:12The best part to me was the part when Maul is talking about the
- 22:17institutions that you've relied on have a collapse and the life
- 22:24you thought you were going to have no longer exists.
- 22:28And there's just something deeply resonant about that.
- 22:32Amen. He wasn't wrong, but he said
- 22:37when she was trying to say like, oh, we believe in good and
- 22:39protecting the peace. And he said, well, how far did
- 22:41that get the Jedi? Where are they now?
- 22:43He wasn't wrong. We've talked about this.
- 22:47That's the thing about being too extreme in the light and too
- 22:50extreme in the dark. They were fools and and.
- 22:56Naive. Yes.
- 22:57And while they stood for honorable things think, you
- 23:01know, they had dignity in what they did, It's it failed because
- 23:07the balance wasn't there. They they felt too strongly
- 23:10about things where they could have given a little.
- 23:12And Maul presented it in a fashion that I thought was the
- 23:17writing was fantastic. He just presented it right out
- 23:20there and she couldn't argue with it because she knew it was
- 23:23true. She knew it was true and that's
- 23:24what hurts. That's what stings the most.
- 23:26Yeah. And I loved when the master,
- 23:29when she and her Master faced off with Mall, he just, he said
- 23:33something like that's your delusion or something like that.
- 23:36And he was so rock solid. And it was interesting to see
- 23:39how Mall fought them each differently because, you know,
- 23:44they present a totally different resistance to him.
- 23:48He knows that Devin's is kind of like.
- 23:51A little shaky. And also that it's like kind of
- 23:54because it's she's a Jedi and it's what it's expected, but
- 23:57maybe she doesn't even agree with it.
- 23:59She might actually see the truth in what he's saying, but isn't
- 24:02ready to admit that out loud yet.
- 24:05Oh totally. I did think it was kind of funny
- 24:10someone kicked him in the knee. Yeah, her Master.
- 24:14Master, Yeah. I thought his name.
- 24:16What is? His name Daki.
- 24:17Yeah. He he goes to Uncle Daki, yes.
- 24:20Uncle Daki Yeah, I thought it was a great move and I'm like,
- 24:24why are they not aiming for the legs?
- 24:28Yeah, Obi Wan went for the knees or the neck.
- 24:33Or the neck. But.
- 24:34Well remember Obi Wan kept kicking savage oppressive the
- 24:37knee over and over until he couldn't walk anymore.
- 24:40And it wasn't. Getting anywhere?
- 24:42No, but I mean, Roundhouse him and then slice at the knee.
- 24:47What's he going to do, hobble away?
- 24:49Well, he's so fucking strong. He took down that bridge, which
- 24:51I thought was a great mom. Is that strong?
- 24:55It reminded me of the scene in season 7 where he breaks like
- 24:58the reactor room down. Yeah, he's he.
- 25:02Doesn't need a light Saber, honestly, he can do he's crazy.
- 25:07He's can, he can do anything that's scary.
- 25:11It is scary and I thought they portrayed him very well as
- 25:14frightening in that scene where after the tea he offers her tea
- 25:18and she takes his lightsaber and he he was offering her either
- 25:22the tea or the lightsaber. Like you could tell they were
- 25:24both there for her to accept and she, he kind of expected her to
- 25:28fight back I guess. But the way he was just
- 25:32appearing and disappearing in the darkness, so.
- 25:35Good, that's a mind fuck. I feel like Thrawn would use
- 25:38that move. I feel like.
- 25:40Yeah. Maul is kind of bread crumbing,
- 25:44a little Thrawn ish flavoring with things.
- 25:49I love him because he's not just brute force.
- 25:52He can be. He started that way, but he's
- 25:55evolved into something far scarier.
- 25:58Because there is intellect and and reasoning, it's just leading
- 26:03you into a solution that is kind of scary.
- 26:07Yeah, yeah. I mean, Duku made some good
- 26:10points too. And he was that simmering cold.
- 26:14You didn't know which way he was going to go, if he was going to
- 26:16blow up and fuck a thing up, you know, like go all out, or if he
- 26:20was going to try to, like, schmooze his way out of
- 26:23something. Mall.
- 26:24I feel like this is the mature mall.
- 26:26This is the the mature mall. And it's before he's the like
- 26:34bizarre eccentric ball in Rebels and he hasn't made his sateen
- 26:40shrine yet. What the fuck I?
- 26:43Know when does that happen? Why does it happen?
- 26:47It makes me wonder if the stuff from Solo is going to be in the
- 26:53middle of this since they've already approved it for a season
- 26:562, or if that's like somewhere at the end.
- 26:59Bookending it like that is where I'm most confused because that
- 27:03appearance made him seem older, but that could have just been
- 27:07because the actor is older. True, I do hope if they decide
- 27:11to go that direction, they invite Emilia Clarke back.
- 27:14Long live Daenerys Targaryen. She's still my queen.
- 27:21I hope they bring her back and her character and we get a
- 27:23little background in an animated form and it would just be nice
- 27:26to hear her voice again, you know, in Star Wars.
- 27:29But. Yeah.
- 27:31I do hope they bridge that if they decide to go that
- 27:33direction. If not, that's fine.
- 27:35We have Solo, but what's her name?
- 27:36Kira. Yeah.
- 27:38I mean, they have the opportunity to finally connect
- 27:42solo to something because it's just hanging out there like
- 27:45weird ass thing that. It really is.
- 27:48Just nobody watches and nobody really likes.
- 27:51I mean, I know there are a couple people who like it, but
- 27:53I've only ever seen it once. It was just kind of meh to me.
- 27:58Saying there were good parts in it, but overall it was.
- 28:02And like, the mall at the end, I was like, holy shit, that's
- 28:05awesome. And then they did nothing with
- 28:07it. Yeah.
- 28:08Right, right. They kind of got their budget
- 28:12slashed after nobody saw Solo so well, we're making up for it
- 28:17now. Leave it to Dave Filoni to bring
- 28:19out legends, to bring out loose ends, to tie them all together
- 28:24to, you know what I mean? Well, and I'm very curious to
- 28:27see where this goes because it's got a lot of episodes.
- 28:30Is it 10 or is it 12? I can't remember.
- 28:32I thought it was. 12 because if you look at the cast, mall is
- 28:36on. I'm sorry, it's 10.
- 28:38Mall is on for 10 episodes. Sandwich was in 10 episodes, so
- 28:41I'm assuming it's 10. I don't know why I said 12.
- 28:43No, Yeah, this is kind of like it's kind of a spoiler.
- 28:48Maybe, maybe not because they. Don't look at it, I was going to
- 28:53think. There's there's numbers on
- 28:54everybody, but maybe sometimes they don't update them because
- 28:58they don't put the cast out. But of course Mull is going to
- 29:01be in all for sure. I was going to say, Oh no, I am
- 29:05very afraid that Uncle Ducky is going to get killed and it's
- 29:09going to be part of what pushes Devin towards Mull.
- 29:12But. I was expecting that in the
- 29:14episode where he got hurt. I said, oh, this is he's going
- 29:18to get killed in front of her. She's going to turn just like a
- 29:21Saj Ventress, just like all the other ones that are are wronged
- 29:25and have vengeance. And she's going to just like
- 29:28Anakin. We're going to go the vengeance
- 29:30route. But revenge was the one who
- 29:33killed him. She wouldn't want revenge.
- 29:35That's why I'm worried it's going to be like the ISB who
- 29:38kills him. Oh.
- 29:39They mentioned the ISBI thought that was cool.
- 29:42Yeah, I'm like Deidre. Where?
- 29:43You at? Where you at, girl Critic?
- 29:47Where's my boy? I know.
- 29:49I was like, where's the not you, Lauren?
- 29:52Yeah. Where's you, Lauren?
- 29:53God damn you, Damn you Lauren. Fucking traitor.
- 30:01Can we talk about Devin's fighting style?
- 30:04Yes, please. Familiar.
- 30:09No. Who is it?
- 30:11Obi Wan, she had the whole like the the thing with the arm, the
- 30:16very. Defensive.
- 30:16I did think, yes, I did think when they both struck their pose
- 30:20in front of mall, the mall must have just been like God.
- 30:22Damn it, not another one. I will not be cut in half this
- 30:28time, but a padawan. It was nice to see because we
- 30:33don't see a lot of people strike that similar pose when preparing
- 30:38to fight their enemy, to fight their opponent.
- 30:42Yeah, that's. True, and it was.
- 30:44That was her chosen. That was her chosen form and I
- 30:47appreciated that she really was on the defense the entire time
- 30:51until she got like real pissed. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:54He pushed her so much that eventually she did attack him,
- 30:59but not even she force pushed him, I guess.
- 31:02Yeah. In the revenge episode that we
- 31:04just watched on our Patreon watch party.
- 31:07Yeah, yeah, that's true. He pushes Obi Wan so much that
- 31:10he attacks and when he attacks, he did doesn't do a very good
- 31:13job. He's so upset.
- 31:16Yeah. It's interesting that I'd love,
- 31:17I can love and hate that about Maul, that he knows how to how
- 31:22to turn you against yourself. Yeah, and again, she's
- 31:27vulnerable and young and this is like post traumatic, all kinds
- 31:33of issues with. I was a little upset that we
- 31:36have yet another set of Jedi that made it out of.
- 31:41Order 66 and that was my first thought.
- 31:43Was Adam to the list. It's just, it just undermines
- 31:47like Luke's, you're the last one or something.
- 31:50But then there's one more and it's, you know.
- 31:53Over and over. It's just that that has slipped
- 31:56farther and farther away so. It has.
- 31:59That was my only like gripe about it.
- 32:03And I'm so sick of Mandalorians. I'm so fucking sick of them and
- 32:06their little tricks and their little.
- 32:10I am too. I'm so tired.
- 32:13I'm so tired of Mandalorians. I totally agree and I have that
- 32:17thought also because to be perfectly honest, the clone Wars
- 32:23episodes where Mall starts putting together his crime
- 32:25syndicate. I was so bored for the most part
- 32:29during that stuff. I don't care about crime
- 32:33syndication in the Star Wars universe.
- 32:35It's it's tough for me too, the like mafia boss feeling of it
- 32:41all and backstabbing and. And that was all where the
- 32:44Mandalorian lore started to come in a little more because he was
- 32:47with pre visa. And so I know why people love
- 32:50it, but I just I'm so bored with it at this point.
- 32:53Like you. It's like we have the
- 32:55Mandalorian. We have like half of Clone Wars
- 32:59is dedicated to Mandalorians and then also Bad Batch has a whole
- 33:04bunch of it's just like I'm can we please just move on?
- 33:12It's been diluted it, it used to be a cool thing and then it got
- 33:16really diluted and, and then it's not that they're any less
- 33:20cool, it's just we've seen it now.
- 33:23It's not as rare. Mandalorians were supposed to be
- 33:25rare, I felt. Yeah.
- 33:28An elite group. And that, I feel, is no longer
- 33:34the case, at least in my opinion.
- 33:36When we've gone deep into like Sabine's family tree and yes,
- 33:40yes, Oh my God, I can't believe I'm forgetting Katie Salka's
- 33:45characters. Thank you, Boca Tan.
- 33:47And, and I mean, then we don't even go that deep.
- 33:50We just like hear about all of this stuff.
- 33:54And then the Oh my God, who is the the one who the one who
- 33:59works the forge in the Mandalorian show.
- 34:03Yeah, yeah. Yeah, Why can't I remember her
- 34:05name? I can't remember anybody right
- 34:06now. But it's just like, Oh my God,
- 34:08can we just introduce something new or even like go back to like
- 34:14pull out another piece of of Star Wars lore, like the wheels,
- 34:20like the the what cheer and bays were I want to learn more about
- 34:25them. Yeah, they were interesting
- 34:27because it was a little bit level.
- 34:29It's a level deeper and that's what you and I gravitate
- 34:31towards. Yeah, yeah, I want to talk about
- 34:35two boots a bit. Now who's?
- 34:37That and Lawson. So it's Lawson the detective and
- 34:41his his Droid 2 boots because I thought that Wagner Morda was
- 34:48fantastic. He was in Narco and he's such a
- 34:52good actor. Very.
- 34:53His voice was so beautiful for this.
- 34:56I just thought it was perfect. Totally attracted to a non
- 34:59existing character over. Here.
- 35:01Oh yeah. Yeah, me, yeah.
- 35:03Yep, same. He's beautiful.
- 35:06I love the scene where he went and visited like his like inside
- 35:10Intel and she's like, I'm here for dinner.
- 35:12I'm like, bitch, I get you. I get.
- 35:14This I know. Do you want me to maybe ruin it
- 35:16for you? What?
- 35:19Do you know who voices that character?
- 35:22It's the one who voices this lady he goes see is the woman
- 35:26who voices Bobby from King of the Hill.
- 35:30What? Did you ever watch that show?
- 35:32Cause again, I was like that voice is very familiar to me and
- 35:36I had to look. Get out of here What?
- 35:41I don't like that show. I never really got into it
- 35:44either. I only liked Tom Petty on that
- 35:46show, but he wasn't on it all the time.
- 35:48So you. Know what?
- 35:49Everyone. Sorry, work.
- 35:51She was hot though, that girl. She's great.
- 35:53Yeah, she's a talented voice actress, but I just like.
- 35:56Cool character. Yeah, I thought it was great.
- 36:00And then it was so blade runnery to me and that building that
- 36:05they approached reminded me kind of of like a sci-fi version of
- 36:09the Paris Opera House. For some reason.
- 36:11It just had like that vibe to be but nice.
- 36:18I'm going to not say his name, right?
- 36:19Forgive me, Richard Ayode. My God, I'm I'm butchering it.
- 36:24I looked up how to before we started, and now I've forgotten,
- 36:28but I love him. He played Moss in the IT crowd,
- 36:32which I watched, you know, decades ago, and I have always
- 36:37loved him since watching that and the fact that he's playing
- 36:40this Droid and playing it perfectly, it is very
- 36:44delightful. But I was really disappointed
- 36:49and freaked out a little bit by his choice to contact the
- 36:53Empire. Yeah, I yeah, yeah.
- 36:59It, it feels like AI turning against us.
- 37:04And that is why I really was disturbed by it because it he's
- 37:09like, this is not the best thing to do.
- 37:11Like if the empire comes here, they'll never leave.
- 37:14Please don't do this. We have reasons not to.
- 37:16And he was just like, this is for the best.
- 37:18It is protocol and I'm overriding you.
- 37:20But also did the false like I have, he apologized.
- 37:25He said I have no intention of going over your head and then
- 37:28did that, which they've shown like AI does, that where it will
- 37:33lie to preserve itself. I honestly don't think that
- 37:38droids should have feeling like that.
- 37:43Yeah, but they all seem to, I mean like think of 3PO and R2
- 37:47and Chopper. They all have feelings.
- 37:50I know, it's fucking weird. I don't know.
- 37:52I he was the Cyril of droids in that moment.
- 37:58Really. Yes, he was.
- 38:00Cyril is one step away from a Droid.
- 38:02Let's be. Honestly, him in this Droid
- 38:05interchangeable. 1 wears a tie, 1 doesn't.
- 38:10And one is charming and one is not.
- 38:13Yeah, the Droid is charming. I was just.
- 38:15Telling you to kiss you. Yep.
- 38:20Yeah, and. Like when he brings him a cup of
- 38:22coffee and he's like, I can't, I can't taste it or drink it.
- 38:26But I'm just here in the moment with you.
- 38:28I noticed the cup of coffee, I was like he is not going to
- 38:31drink that and he didn't. But I was just like that's kind
- 38:34of cute. Do you think they pre programmed
- 38:36these droids to ensure that if the empire is needed they
- 38:40default to that? I do wonder.
- 38:42They have wondered that too. Yeah, because they seem to have
- 38:47a brotherly relationship. There's a photo of them together
- 38:50on the droids desk which is bizarrely human.
- 38:54But well, now Andor and K2 could also have a picture of each
- 39:00other. Sure.
- 39:01But your ship, I'm like, how do I describe it?
- 39:06Like you know how when you're paying your mortgage, you're
- 39:08paying into the equity of your home and you feel like when you
- 39:12have friendship, you pay into equity there and that like when
- 39:16something goes wrong, you fall back on the yes, we have history
- 39:20and I love this person. I'm giving them the benefit of
- 39:22the doubt. Is the Droid just playing that?
- 39:25And then when it comes time for the Droid to trust that Lawson
- 39:30is acting for the best for everyone, he doesn't trust him
- 39:33and he's just programmed to do whatever the Empire wants.
- 39:36I do wonder that's what. That's where I was leaning with
- 39:39it honestly. That's why I said are they pre
- 39:41programmed? Do they have a default in them
- 39:46that's programmed? It I've, I'm kind of nauseated
- 39:51by how AI has changed my opinion of droids in Star Wars, which
- 39:57sounds so stupid, but it really has.
- 39:59Like I feel like there is now with how AI works and how it's
- 40:07so pervasive in every fucking area of every kind of industry
- 40:14and personal stuff. And you can't get a laptop or a
- 40:17phone that doesn't have it. It's like having a worldwide
- 40:22network that's accessible by these private corporations.
- 40:29And why would that be any different in Star Wars?
- 40:32It feels like the droids now are an easy point of attack and and
- 40:37contact with anybody you'd want anywhere.
- 40:40Yes, all you would have to do is install the right software and
- 40:45turn it on somewhere and flick of a switch.
- 40:47It's no different than the Order 66 chip.
- 40:49It's the same thing, except in a Droid who is easier to install
- 40:55and maintain. Yeah, and they have to go and
- 40:58recharge. It's really scary.
- 41:01Right. Like, they go back to their
- 41:02charging station and for all you know, it's getting a software
- 41:05update. And yeah, the Empire data spikes
- 41:09them and sends in a whole bunch of new yeah.
- 41:11I never wanted to think of Star Wars this way.
- 41:15Well here where the fuck we are. I know we need more R twos in
- 41:19our life. I know.
- 41:21Oh my God, he's like he's binary at this point.
- 41:25R2 has never been or not binary. What's the word?
- 41:28I'm looking for analog. Analog, but R2 is a fucking
- 41:34legend. He maintains legendary status.
- 41:38Yeah. He's never been wiped and he
- 41:40doesn't need AI. He's smarter than AI.
- 41:42Yeah, I feel like he recharges by his own sense of self worth
- 41:46instead of plugging into like a port somewhere.
- 41:50He was with Padme and then Anakin and then Leia and Luke.
- 41:55He's got this, OK. He's self-sustaining.
- 42:00I I'm sorry to sidetrack us into very, in my opinion, depressing
- 42:06territory, but. Well if it turns out that the
- 42:10Droid, what's his name, 2 boots, 2 bit, 2 bits shave and a
- 42:14haircut, 2 bits. If two boots ends up being like
- 42:20a defaulted pre programmed empire leaning Droid, then I'll
- 42:26really feel ick. Yeah, at the end of all this.
- 42:30I mean, it may not go that way. He might just be a very serial
- 42:34minded joy, you know, just. Yeah, but I don't though that
- 42:40would make a very interesting dynamic with Lawson, considering
- 42:43they're implying that Lawson's wife is Empire.
- 42:47Yeah. And it's like, I like broken up.
- 42:51I really like this character honestly.
- 42:53I do too. I think he's very interesting,
- 42:57yeah. And he's kind but also kind of
- 43:00shitty dad. And it's just he's complex.
- 43:04And I like that they're not making him one-dimensional and.
- 43:08Yeah, Speaking of the kid, this is this the first like sports
- 43:14game that we've witnessed in a, in a very like pedestrian
- 43:18setting in Star Wars. It looks like rugby.
- 43:21It looks like rugby and. Field hockey or not?
- 43:26Not field hockey. Oh my gosh.
- 43:27What's the one with the cricket? Maybe.
- 43:31No, it's not cricket. It's not cricket.
- 43:33Some British, Australian, some British person, they can tell us
- 43:37some help me, help me. Tell me what I'm trying to think
- 43:40of. There was a blonde guard that
- 43:44was with Lawson working for him. I thought he sounded like Matt
- 43:50Lanter, but then when I went down through the line, Lanter's
- 43:52not in the cast, so I was like. Damn, Yeah.
- 43:55I wondered if they're going to sneak.
- 43:57Like, Steve Bloom is in there and so is Steven Stanton.
- 44:00So I wonder if they're going to sneak.
- 44:02Other Steve Bradley Baker's in it too.
- 44:04Oh, yeah, yeah. So.
- 44:07But I don't know James, James said.
- 44:09He was not. He didn't see.
- 44:11You know how he told us how he could tell?
- 44:13When he listen James, listen James, we saw the smirk you
- 44:19gave. Yeah, I don't know.
- 44:21His reaction really seemed like he wasn't in the show.
- 44:25But he's a professional professional.
- 44:29Yeah, I guess we'll wait and see, but I it would be cool if
- 44:32they brought Matt and Ashley and James in to just like, play
- 44:36extra characters. That's all.
- 44:38Just give us a little. And you can't argue that you
- 44:41need fresh blood because you have Vanessa Marshall playing a
- 44:45main character and you have Steve Bloom and you have Stephen
- 44:48Sadden. Those are all not and David
- 44:51Collins also, by the way, who has done a voice in everything
- 44:56Star Wars basically since. Yes.
- 44:59Phantom Menace I think. Yes, God, he goes back as far as
- 45:04mall I know. Back he does I Yeah, I don't
- 45:11argue that you can't bring those Clone Wars actors in 'cause it's
- 45:15true. I won't buy.
- 45:15They do have schedules too that they have to balance.
- 45:18It's true, but come on guys. I have to say I really enjoy the
- 45:24character Verio, the little guy. Oh, the little guy, Yeah, he had
- 45:30like a little furry gills or something.
- 45:33Yes, well, that voice actor does such a good job making him
- 45:38funny. He's got these little quips that
- 45:41you almost don't hear because he's like being closed into a
- 45:44room or. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:46And, and he's kind of like nervous energy.
- 45:47I really liked when Wall did the lightsaber through the wall,
- 45:51getting closer and closer to him.
- 45:52I said that's effective. Yes.
- 45:55And after that, when he's standing in the hall and you can
- 45:58feel him sense her through the door and then he turns to look
- 46:01at her, it's just like, whoa, that's spooky.
- 46:04And really? Well done with those eyes of
- 46:06his. His eyes are fucking crazy.
- 46:08Those are crazy eyes. She was very calm.
- 46:11I'd have been freaking the fuck out.
- 46:14I would not have done. Well, I would not have been into
- 46:17like looking out the door at that point once I saw it was
- 46:20him. But he could probably censor.
- 46:22Even if she was hiding, you probably could have picked up
- 46:25her energy. That's the thing.
- 46:27They can sense fear. Yeah, well, and he said you
- 46:30could feel a new apprentice coming.
- 46:33And so that's why I wonder if he's if it's possible because
- 46:37there's, you know, six more episodes.
- 46:39Maybe she's not The Apprentice, maybe she's like a Mac Guffin or
- 46:42something. But or red herring or whatever
- 46:45they call it. I don't know how it's going to
- 46:47go. I just, I, I have hope for her.
- 46:49But again, it's Star Wars. Well, now I think they're going
- 46:54to start introducing the Empire and maybe Inquisitors.
- 46:57And so I feel like their pacing is pretty good that they're
- 47:02introducing this on the like front end of the season.
- 47:05And then there's a season 2. So I feel like unlike Acolyte,
- 47:09we might actually get a resolution to the show.
- 47:13Don't. Don't speak too soon.
- 47:15Yeah, I know, I know. We probably will.
- 47:17The thing is, is we have a book, we have a, a before and after.
- 47:21So when there's a before and after and they put something in
- 47:23the middle, usually they can bridge the 2.
- 47:28Yeah. Usually.
- 47:30Fingers crossed, for God's sakes.
- 47:33We're giving them the benefit of the doubt, Bridget.
- 47:37OK. Yeah, I'm looking forward to
- 47:40more. I'm trying not to jump ahead and
- 47:44judge too quick because it's not like I'm drawn in.
- 47:49But I also wasn't drawn into Clone Wars until Season 2, so
- 47:53no, I'm gonna. And I didn't like Ahsoka and I
- 47:56love her and I didn't like Obi Wan and I love Obi Wan.
- 47:58So I'm trying to remember that for myself.
- 48:00It's. True, it's true.
- 48:01Give it a chance, let it complete and see how they do.
- 48:05But of course, like I'm, I would say I'm very impressed with the
- 48:11animation. I'm very impressed with the
- 48:13acting and I'm excited to see where it goes.
- 48:15So yes, I'm I'm enjoying it. Yeah, after I got past the this
- 48:22is, this is crime syndicate like.
- 48:25Yeah. You have to understand, I just
- 48:27don't like it in any movie. I'm just not drawn to those kind
- 48:31of movies, but I am. I am into this enough now.
- 48:35There's enough characters that intrigue me where I I am looking
- 48:39forward to the next watching four in a row.
- 48:41I got to pace myself next time, but my schedule's been like
- 48:45pretty intense lately. My work schedule so well, I am
- 48:48my personal, but I watched them all at once and I it's hard to
- 48:52do that. Well, the next ones that come
- 48:55out will just be two, so we can handle that a little better.
- 48:58You know, I heard someone say that the crime syndicate stuff
- 49:02and the way the city looks and even the the meeting between the
- 49:06two crime Lords, that it all had Batman inspiration, like Dark
- 49:11Knight vibes. Yeah.
- 49:14And that's all about the Moronis and the oh, God, I can't
- 49:17remember the other ones now. And like, even in Batman, it's
- 49:20like, I like it better there because it's more of the
- 49:22foundation of the story. I tire of it very quickly
- 49:27usually, and I tired of it immediately in Clone Wars.
- 49:30So I hope they kind of like make it more about Maul and the way
- 49:34he's twisting her mind and less about the crime syndicates as
- 49:38they move forward. I do think it was just a
- 49:41springboard. Yeah, 'cause they're all kind of
- 49:44dead now. Yeah.
- 49:46And he killed them all. It was.
- 49:49It was to draw in all the characters at once.
- 49:51The master, The Apprentice, Mall Lawson, and then the Droid at
- 49:57the end basically. Yeah.
- 50:00OK, so now they're all kind of intertwined, and now maybe it
- 50:02will unfold. Yeah.
- 50:05It more more holy in a way WHOLLY not HOLY.
- 50:11There's nothing holy about Darth Mall.
- 50:17I hope it unfolds more completely because that yeah, I
- 50:21liked it. I like I like the show.
