Latest / Citizen Frame / Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Transcript
- 0:07It's been a hard day. I lost my convoy.
- 0:11I lost my crew. I'm gonna have to start again. Hell, I'm driving off thinking
- 0:16I ought to start with you. You got good vision.
- 0:19You read the play and you keep your head. You may be raw, but you have about
- 0:23you a purposeful savagery.
- 0:25You give me time, I'll teach you everything you need to know about road war.
- 0:30If you survive everything we take on together you'll have
- 0:34all the skills you need to get wherever you want to go no questions
- 0:37asked all right guys it's
- 0:40time to say goodbye to the mad max saga this time with furiosa
- 0:43which is called furiosa a mad max
- 0:46saga even though mad max isn't in it despite a very small
- 0:49cameo that is actually important to the plot but we'll
- 0:52get to it yes he is in it and yeah
- 0:56we'll dive into that scene i almost wish tom hardy
- 0:59hadn't was slightly bigger part even if it was a 10 minute
- 1:02part but yeah so they decided
- 1:06to go a different direction this was kind of already pre-written as
- 1:09a treatment or something like that george miller already had kind of a spinoff
- 1:12idea not a big fan of spinoffs just because lately with the star wars and the
- 1:17marvels they're doing my fucking head in i was like oh god do we need this but
- 1:22when you get an Oscar-nominated performance from the wonderful,
- 1:25wonderful Charlize Theron,
- 1:26and pretty much the scene stealer of the film, and why not go for it?
- 1:33But you decide not to go with the girl herself, Charlize Theron.
- 1:38Now, George Miller says he would have went with her in two seconds flat,
- 1:42not a problem, but you would have to do some de-aging with her,
- 1:46and George Miller's not a A big CGI guy,
- 1:50he will use it, obviously, if he needs to, but he doesn't like it,
- 1:54depend on it, and he didn't want people looking at the de-aging of the actress
- 1:58rather than what's the surroundings, the environment that they're in.
- 2:03And I kind of got that. And so he decided to cast a newcomer, well, up-and-comer.
- 2:09Well, obviously, it's been around a couple of years.
- 2:11Anya Taylor-Joy, and she actually pulls off.
- 2:15She looks a lot like her. Yeah. I would say as well, Alayah Brown is worthy
- 2:20of mention too, who plays the young Furiosa basically in the first act.
- 2:25And she has quite a lot of stuff to do.
- 2:27So yeah, she deserves mention as well, I think. She's actually very good as a child actress.
- 2:33And I don't even like child actresses, you know, or actors, you know.
- 2:38Yeah, give her a shout, give her a shout. A lot of staring and a lot of staring.
- 2:42George Miller's back, of course, and the rest of the team from Fury Road,
- 2:48they're all back, same crew and all.
- 2:52And as we all, we talked about it real quickly with Fury Road, this movie Tanked.
- 2:58And I thought about it. Now it's going to find its footing.
- 3:01I've already bought it on 4K. It's going to make its money back.
- 3:04It made money back, but you need to almost double your money to see a profit.
- 3:10So it's got a little ways to go.
- 3:12Now I'm hoping what George Miller would do then would do a little less commercial
- 3:18version, Fury Road and Furiosa, and strip down the Road Warrior itself and go back to basics.
- 3:25Back to Roach. Maybe give us an ending with Tom Hardy and Furiosa,
- 3:29you know, teaming up again.
- 3:30That'd be kind of cool because you don't need to spend $150 million to do this
- 3:33movie if you want to do it the old school way, you know?
- 3:37So hopefully Warner Brothers and him will kind of do a good swan song,
- 3:41I guess is the perfect word, term to use.
- 3:43Yeah, I mean, I would love to see it, you know, with Mel Gibson returning as well.
- 3:49I mean, now you're, yeah, but I think you're, at that point,
- 3:52that's maybe an older version of Tom Hardy at the end would be kind of cool, you know? Yeah.
- 3:57Like, flash forward, and there's Mel Gibson sitting next to the car,
- 4:00something that'd be kind of cool.
- 4:01But we're not there yet and hopefully we do get some kind of a swan song for
- 4:05everyone involved in this project in these projects now the reason i think it
- 4:09tanked and i'm shocked literally.
- 4:13Fucking shocked we live in a world where fucking barbie makes a billion dollars,
- 4:18that terrible oppenheimer which i don't get makes a billion dollars and yet
- 4:23this this film just barely touches 100.
- 4:27Shocked. I just, I don't get it. Now, I thought about it before this podcast.
- 4:33Now, the reason I think this tanked is a couple different reasons.
- 4:38One, what I first mentioned, it's a spinoff. People are sick of Marvel.
- 4:42They're sick of Star Wars.
- 4:43So when they think spinoff, they're like, fuck me, here we go,
- 4:47another spinoff. I do think that is the big one.
- 4:50Number two, I think people are disappointed that George Miller did not cast,
- 4:56That's kind of why I brought it up in the beginning, he wanted to,
- 4:59but this, that was his reason.
- 5:01And I give him, I give him credit where credit's due. I can see where he was at with that.
- 5:08And three is Mad Max is not it. A hundred percent.
- 5:13That's what I was just about to say. And also I would say, I would say Mad Max is
- 5:16Well, you know, I mean, there's multiple other reasons, you know,
- 5:19like, you know, things being rushed so quickly on the streaming services.
- 5:23Also, I don't, sadly, general audience members, I do not believe that they were
- 5:29invested enough with the character of Furiosa, aside from even,
- 5:33you know, Mad Max being there.
- 5:35Yes she's a pretty cool character and fury road
- 5:38and stuff and everybody likes charlie stir on she's always
- 5:41very impressive but as for the character of furiosa herself
- 5:44general audience members were just not invested enough with her or even knew
- 5:49enough about her it's different for nerds like us and mad max fans who know
- 5:55her but we're we're not the majority you know so that's That's a big problem, you know?
- 6:03Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, there's quite a few reasons, I'm sure.
- 6:09But it is what it is. And maybe you'll find this footing once people watch and
- 6:12go, hey, fuck, that was actually quite good.
- 6:14I mean, I saw this thing three times in a theater. I saw it twice in cinema. And I wasn't bored.
- 6:18Yeah, and I just watched it again. And, like I said, back-to-back with Fury Road.
- 6:23And I'm still enjoying it. Now, it has lost a little value with me.
- 6:29I overhyped it when i first saw it and now when you
- 6:31see a little more and you kind of relaxed and
- 6:34you're in your fourth or fifth viewing yourself kind of yeah the dust settles
- 6:38a bit and you kind of see what went wrong a little bit with i would agree with
- 6:42that because with me i was i thought it was incredible and i thought you know
- 6:46for seeing that for the first couple of times in the cinema but now that the
- 6:50dust has settled a bit you know but whereas whenever i first watched it those
- 6:54first couple of times I thought I think this is maybe even better than Fury
- 6:57Road and while certain aspects of it I still think is as I discussed in the
- 7:03previous podcast like sort of general plot and story and characterization overall
- 7:08Fury Road still blows it away.
- 7:12Yeah, we'll dive into the comparisons here in a second. Now,
- 7:16it wouldn't be a Mad Max film, technically, or a Mad Max spin-off film without these names.
- 7:23We got Furiosa, Dementus, Praetorian Jack, The History Man, Morton Joe,
- 7:28The People Eater, The Organic Mechanic, Rictus Rectus, Scrotus,
- 7:32Meg, The Octoboss, Fang, and Squint.
- 7:35So there you go. The People Eater, The Organic Mechanic back.
- 7:40And did you know the people eaters backstory
- 7:43which i read up upon is crazy uh
- 7:46he's basically a cannibal he eats people that's
- 7:49why he's called the people eater and the reason that he's
- 7:52all deformed with the big food and stuff is because he's like
- 7:55basically it's due to him his cannibalism and
- 7:59his eating of other people bowl okay good to know um so i do we open up and
- 8:09we talked about velcro now we meet velcro at a young age we saw her in near
- 8:13the tip end there fury road velcro is obviously furiosa's kid sister.
- 8:18And we see her you know i don't get why she took a chance on just able on their
- 8:23bikes she should just let them go yes or she couldn't let them go well because they didn't want they
- 8:29couldn't let her they couldn't let them go because they didn't want them
- 8:31to leave and tell people well exactly exactly that's what
- 8:34it was because the green place has to be protected because
- 8:37it's which is actually their little community is actually quite selfish i can
- 8:41understand their reasons for it and that they don't want these basically lunatics
- 8:46you know taking over and destroying their paradise but at the same time they're
- 8:50being quite selfish and that they're letting the rest of the world suffer while
- 8:53they have it good but yeah that's still you know.
- 8:57Yeah, but the rest of the world is a bunch of mad fuckers. I will,
- 9:00you know, what about Perth? I think it's a judgment call.
- 9:03I mean, she can look at these people that, I mean, you could tell right away that they're scumbags.
- 9:08Why would you not want the people eater and the mantis in your community?
- 9:13Fuck that. And Rictus Erectus. We probably have them somewhere.
- 9:16You know what? We all probably have a people eater somewhere. Oh, absolutely.
- 9:19We just don't know who. Yeah, absolutely. I would say there's much worse than
- 9:23people eaters out there in the real world. Trust me.
- 9:28So when she gets kidnapped, beautiful desert scenery coming up during day and
- 9:34night. Incredible. Incredible.
- 9:38And you win, so when the one guy, I can't remember his name,
- 9:44he got the no eyeball. Yes.
- 9:46Takes, takes credit. He's trying to take credit for finding the green place,
- 9:49but it's the other guy who did it.
- 9:52Furiosa wraps his neck around a chain and pulls him off his bike.
- 9:56And then we see the guy come into the tent. He's all bloody and choking.
- 9:59Was that because Furiosa did that to him with the chain or did the guy with
- 10:02the one eye do that to him?
- 10:03The guy with the one eye, I believe did it to him, although it's not explicitly stated.
- 10:07It was one-eyed headdress guy who
- 10:10did it i believe because they were looking to be rewarded
- 10:13by dementis for finding the yes that's
- 10:16that's what i thought at first but if you see the wound
- 10:19it's around his whole neck it's a gaping wound
- 10:22that she wrapped around his neck and pulled him off the bike so
- 10:25i wasn't sure if furiosa actually caught and then
- 10:28don't forget furiosa's mother was also like shooting at
- 10:31him and firing harpoons at him and stuff as well so it actually could
- 10:34have been her they see when i re-watched this for the podcast no
- 10:37wasn't no no no she didn't take the shot no i
- 10:39know she couldn't but she was taking shots at them
- 10:42you know generally so yeah but he
- 10:45was talking oh no i know but there's
- 10:49stuff that happens off screen that we the audience are not
- 10:51privy to i.e who actually does the the
- 10:54proper wound to him it's because i rewinded it
- 10:57back when i was watching him who did that to
- 11:00him you know but we're not told i'm i
- 11:03think it's very yourself well i think it was one-eyed um
- 11:06headdress guy who i actually like there's a.
- 11:09Really funny line he's got where he tries to be uh
- 11:12where furiosa won't tell him where the green place is you
- 11:15know when he first meets her and he goes he tries to
- 11:18be all cute you know like you would talk to a kid come on little girl tell me
- 11:21just he's like the worst sort of you know you know talking to kids he's like
- 11:27a pedophile trying to lure a fucking yeah i mean it's just he's like the worst
- 11:31at being cutesy to kids ever it just you know it was horrible you know i missing and all just.
- 11:40And that's one thing I run on theme throughout all of the Mad Max films,
- 11:44the dark humor, the dark Australian humor, which I love.
- 11:49Yeah, that's standard practice. Even the first half of the terrible Beyond Thunderdome
- 11:55had that. Yeah, exactly.
- 11:57So I don't get, the mom is this badass, you know, taking sniper shots,
- 12:02as you said, and knowing when to pull back.
- 12:05She can't shoot because there's too many of them at this point.
- 12:07So she's got to go in an ambush style to get her daughter back.
- 12:10Yes. And so, which she does so with that slingshot, which is kind of cool.
- 12:15Now, what threw me off a bit was, and I know you're going to come back with
- 12:20the motherly thing, but she's pretty there to protect her kid.
- 12:25Yes. And so the one woman she doesn't kill because she's on my mother too,
- 12:30she, you know, lets her go.
- 12:32She wouldn't have done that. She would have killed her right on the spot.
- 12:36It's a motherly thing it's a someone like dementis or
- 12:39a morton joe would have killed someone like that on the spot if
- 12:42they went against him but it's a it's a motherly intuition
- 12:45thing but the character's smart enough to
- 12:48know to kill it because she's lying she's lying
- 12:52or i just think it was kind of out of character for what we got even though
- 12:56we soon we only introduced her for a brief moment you saw this just no no it
- 12:59works for me because it's because there's more of don't Don't forget that there's
- 13:04more of a humanity to the ones in the green place and their full lives as well,
- 13:10as opposed to these mutant fuckers in the wasteland who are all half-lives, you know.
- 13:16It's basically, she has more of a humanity to her, so that's why she spurs her.
- 13:21But also, it is a bit of emotional blackmail by this woman, you know,
- 13:25who's saying, I'm a mother as well.
- 13:26And maybe she's not even a mother because, you know, it could be out and out
- 13:30bullshit, you know, just to spur her life. But she knows how to play on her
- 13:34emotions. She goes, I'm a mother myself.
- 13:35Don't kill me. And she falls for it.
- 13:40I'm not sure if all for getting gutted then yeah yeah yeah
- 13:45so i do i do like we mentioned this in the previous
- 13:47besides you know stunt stunt stunt team or mannequins taking hits left and right
- 13:54there's really no graphic graphic violence in the in the in the films well the
- 14:00guy grunge the guy who we've just talked about now who you know gets his head
- 14:05I'm cut off the one who found a green place.
- 14:07There's actually, again, it's not gratuitous, but there's a really quite gory
- 14:11and gruesome touch where whenever he actually dies, the dogs,
- 14:15Dementus' dogs, come over and lick up his blood.
- 14:19Yeah, that's more humorous, kind of. Like you just mentioned.
- 14:23And so what I mean is it's not, you know, you're not going to get,
- 14:26you know, it's not a slasher film.
- 14:28It's not nasty. And we, like you see this next Dementus pretty much exposes
- 14:35Furiosa to these scenes of cruelty is what he's going to pretty much do,
- 14:39keep her up on a chain and give her her Hannibal Lecter mouthpiece there.
- 14:43And so when they kill her mother and they're, what they're doing here,
- 14:49they're tearing out her guts.
- 14:50Yeah, the crucifixion. Is what they're doing. Tearing out her guts.
- 14:52And yeah, so you, he has a way of, you know exactly what's happening,
- 14:58but he hides the actual act.
- 15:02Yeah, it's not exclusive. And it's done through the child's eyes.
- 15:06Yeah, that's also- Which is a brilliant, brilliant shot because it's showing
- 15:10what it's going to turn Furiosa into by witnessing her mother's death.
- 15:14Well, yes, and it's also- And it's going to be Dementius' downfall. Yes.
- 15:18By killing her mother and exposing that to her at a young age,
- 15:22Dementius' death will be caused because of this act.
- 15:26And also regarding the way she dies as well,
- 15:29and it not being gratuitous, it's because, again, back to the brilliant visual
- 15:34storytelling by Miller, it's because just around this scene,
- 15:39the history man, I think it is, prepares human blood sausage for Dementus.
- 15:45That's what he eats. He eats human blood sausages.
- 15:48That's the organic mechanic. Yes, yes. But also, he also drinks human tears as well.
- 15:55Well because with them being half lives it's heavily
- 15:57suggested that they don't cry as part of their genetic
- 16:01deficiencies so he's like sort of he
- 16:04drinks some of young furiosa's tears well he
- 16:07doesn't it doesn't drink it's not like he sits over a big glass and drinks it
- 16:10he like you know sort of gets him and sort of well basically licks him the tears
- 16:16you know so yes he eats blood sausages human blood sausages and drinks human
- 16:21tears but again none of it is like it's all well Well handled.
- 16:26I like blood pudding. Well, yeah. Black pudding. We call it here.
- 16:31Black pudding. We call it black pudding actually over here.
- 16:34Congealed blood. People don't know what black pudding is in the US.
- 16:37If people don't know what black pudding is, go ahead and Google it.
- 16:40It's actually fucking awesome.
- 16:42But I got a little dementia in me, I guess you can say. I had a fry in town last week.
- 16:47I had a fry in town last week. Bit of an aside here.
- 16:50But they accidentally gave me black pudding and I was like, no,
- 16:53just give me fucking beans. I'm not a cannibal.
- 16:56Like Karen is You're not a cannibal, it's pig's blood Give me a fucking break,
- 17:01I'm joking, I'm joking I'm making a reference to Dementus eating blood Sausage,
- 17:08you know what's brilliantly What do you call it A part of Dementus' character
- 17:13as well The suggested tragic,
- 17:16Backstory, you know, with the teddy bear Yeah You know.
- 17:21Well it's not even at the end It's right here, he tells her because he gives
- 17:25her the teddy bear and he's right there and it's showing he's very protective of this girl.
- 17:30So yeah, when he gives her the teddy bear, he says it belonged to my little ones. Yes.
- 17:35And he kind of looks glazed over, like he said he can't cry or anything like
- 17:38that. But you, but Chris Helmsworth, he's very good in this role.
- 17:43He sells it quite well. And you can see the hurt in his eyes just mentioning that.
- 17:48It's a lot like them. He's got actually the same backstory, similar to Mad Max's. Yep.
- 17:53And it's just funny how the direction each one of them took.
- 17:58You got Mad Max, who's just kind of a loner, wants to be left alone,
- 18:01but it'll do the right thing if need be.
- 18:03The Reluctant Hero, as you call them back in the Road Warrior.
- 18:06And then you've got this guy who just went apeshit crazy.
- 18:08And yeah i mean while anya taylor joy
- 18:11is great i mean she's great generally and
- 18:15great in this film to me the real star of this film
- 18:18is hemsworth and did you know that um chris hemsworth first made his name in
- 18:25the australian soap opera home and away he went but this gets even better but
- 18:31he's actually returning to the soap because he's actually he comes across as quite a humble and
- 18:35pretty nice guy because so he's returning to the soap home on the way to play
- 18:39the same character obviously because he's basically he's not forgetting his
- 18:43roots or where he started,
- 18:45and you know it's one for the fans of that so yeah good for him good for him
- 18:50that's fucking here he's got a false nose on as well well do you really think
- 18:56people watch that and go oh wow i didn't realize chris hemsworth nose was that
- 18:59big do you really don't think people do you know that That was prosthetic.
- 19:03Are you fucking kidding me? Oh, look, it's Chris Hemsworth. Oh,
- 19:06yeah. I remember the Pinocchio nose. When he was in Home and Away.
- 19:11Oh, fuck off. You and your... He played a surfer dude character in Home and Away called Kim.
- 19:16I don't care. Don't care. Don't care. Nobody cares, actually.
- 19:20Nobody cares. Home and Away fans do. Nobody cares about that fact.
- 19:23No, they don't. Australians are like, oh, fuck off, mate.
- 19:26Why don't you bring it up? That shite so full. That's my Australian accent.
- 19:30I was going to say, are these Australians Scottish or something?
- 19:32You know, by that accent.
- 19:34That was a good accent. That was good. Right. Anyway, Hemsworth is superb here.
- 19:39Throughout the whole film.
- 19:41I like the character of the history man. Yes. I like the fact his whole body's
- 19:45tattooed with facts and literature and all these things.
- 19:49And I do like the fact it shows that Dementus' human side,
- 19:55and yes, we mentioned the teddy bear incident, but also that he's trying to
- 19:58educate himself on what he lost out on or the history of what was the world at one point in time.
- 20:07I do like that dynamic. amic it's funny
- 20:10the people he cherishes the most was the history man and furiosa
- 20:13he keeps caged up i believe that dementis is
- 20:17was was once a good man a family man but like you say it's very similar to mad
- 20:23max's backstory but he went a an extremely dark route a vengeful angry and even
- 20:29he explicitly states this at the end whenever furiosa has got him he basically
- 20:34he goes he calls her a little
- 20:36d little d he was you you'll turn because he
- 20:39was you think the vengeance will stop the screaming and the madness
- 20:42and the trauma and the pain you're going through hey was it
- 20:45only makes it worse so i believe he was once a good
- 20:48man but once whatever happened to his children and family just put him right
- 20:53over the edge and it became it just went too far and the the the the more bad
- 21:00and sort of crazy things he did he just went down that rabbit hole until there
- 21:04was no more of the former man left.
- 21:06Again, superb storytelling by Miller.
- 21:10There is a good scene where a warrior boy sets up a flare and they meet him
- 21:18on the road and he goes, bring me to your citadel.
- 21:21And he goes there. And during this part, you kind of see him,
- 21:25he's a leader of a smaller group.
- 21:28And he thinks he's this bad. It almost, I know it's completely night and day,
- 21:33don't get me wrong, of a spectrum. But we talked about this with the gang in Dead Man Walking.
- 21:40Yes, they're bullies and they can be quite effective at bullying and being quite violent.
- 21:46But Dead Man's Shoes, I mean, yeah.
- 21:49But at the end of the day, they're dipshits, and they're clueless.
- 21:52Yes. They're twats. And kind of this is what Dementus is, you know?
- 21:57So he thinks he can go up against these guys, the Citadel and Morton Joe,
- 22:01and Morton Joe pretty much laughs in his face.
- 22:04He shows the self-sacrifice of the warrior boy, which I thought was really cool.
- 22:09And he just blows him out of the water pretty much. And it's actually a really cool little sequence.
- 22:14However, I think George Miller really wanted him. I think he really wanted to
- 22:19show us this grand scale of things.
- 22:21And this is where the CGI kind of, okay, dude, you didn't need to show us all
- 22:26this. And it's a massive CGI world he's kind of created.
- 22:29In Fury Road, it was just kind of, you know, from a distance or a quick shot.
- 22:35This kind of whole sequence is very CGI-ed and kind of stands out a little bit for me.
- 22:40But I'm not going to, you know, just destroy the scene. The point of the scene
- 22:44is to prove that nobody's going to fuck with a Morton Joe and his team.
- 22:47And not even Dementus well I
- 22:51would say as well although there is you know CGI used um
- 22:54where this film does improve on
- 22:57Fury Road is the world building because we actually
- 23:00well coming up soon we get to see the likes of
- 23:03Gastown and the bullet farm and stuff so yeah
- 23:07yes some of it is realized especially Gastown with
- 23:10CGI and there are times when
- 23:14the CGI does jar a little but yeah I mean because we're so used to Mad Max films
- 23:22being so practical but it doesn't ruin it or anything like that but it does
- 23:27I do like the betrayal sequence between Octoboss and Dementus.
- 23:33And because he wants to take over Gastown So he has Octavos' team dress up as warrior boys.
- 23:42So it looks like they're just delivering, they're coming to pick up the oil from Gastown.
- 23:48And so in order for it to look real, Demetrius starts killing the warrior boys
- 23:53as if they're being ambushed, get them to open the gates. It's actually a very clever misdirect.
- 23:58Considering he's naive and doesn't really understand,
- 24:04what he's up against, he yeah he
- 24:07does he kind of knows what he's doing there so it's
- 24:11clever but there's nice when octoboss just looks
- 24:14at him and he says you're scum dementis because he's
- 24:17taking out his own men yeah yeah totally that's right yeah and then um later
- 24:22on i'm gonna find out that the octoboss's sort of gang which are known as the
- 24:27mortar fires i think they then have broken away and formed their their own splinter
- 24:31group away from the mattresses.
- 24:34Yeah. Because they try to take over the rig.
- 24:38Yeah. Yes, that's right. Whenever Pretoria and Jack and Furiosa are driving. Great scene actually.
- 24:44Yes. So he decided when he takes over Gastown, I do like the whole bargaining chip.
- 24:50He's so bad at it. He's terrible at it.
- 24:53He doesn't have a leg to stand on, but he does have Gastown and he does have
- 24:58a detonator, which I don't think is even a detonator. I think he's just playing them.
- 25:05But his detonator goes, I want this and this and this. He gets it,
- 25:08but they get Furiosa. They get the organic mechanic.
- 25:11And then he gets, he doesn't get as much. He gets like one third.
- 25:15I think he was one third of each of what he was up for.
- 25:19And then, but by him doing that bargaining chip and cutting what he really wanted
- 25:24down to a quarter, it's going to cause damage to the community of Gastown.
- 25:30So he's going to lose control of his men, Dementis. I just caught this when I was reviewing it.
- 25:35He actually loses control of his men, who are very loyal to him,
- 25:38but they, because they're missing, now they're going to be lack of food,
- 25:43lack of milk and cabbages, whatever else, potatoes.
- 25:47He is, his own team is going to start turning on him and we'll find that out
- 25:51soon when Petroleum Jack, it's Petroleum Jack?
- 25:55Sounds like, it sounds like a dinosaur. Yeah.
- 26:00When they go get something, when they go back to Gastown. So this bargaining,
- 26:04the way he bargains, is going to be his downfall as well.
- 26:08Yes, not only that there. Well, I mean, obviously, Dementis wants to rule more.
- 26:14He wants to take over the Citadel and also the bullet farm.
- 26:17But the problem is he runs, which we'll find out later on whenever it flies forward.
- 26:22It flies forward, you know, like so many years. Find out that he's completely
- 26:26run Gastown into the ground.
- 26:28He's completely useless because it's like basically civil war
- 26:31there where it's whereas before whenever it
- 26:34was onto the other guy who was under the control
- 26:37of a morton joe it was well run and it
- 26:40was you know it was you know it was a steady ship albeit a corrupt one but it
- 26:45was still well run whereas dementis is a useless bastard in terms of running
- 26:50these i mean but that's what i said his bargaining chip was the reason this
- 26:54happened he took too little yeah and that's why he causes is a civil war within his community.
- 27:00Yes. But yeah, so there's a nice shot where Furiosa is, this is where we're
- 27:06about to turn into Joy takes over the role, where she's about,
- 27:10she chops off her hair and she makes this fake wig, which I thought was clever.
- 27:15And when Rectus, Rectus is trying to kind of seduce her, she escapes from him and hides.
- 27:24And you see her wig fall and she obviously escapes because it's going to be
- 27:28years later, but they don't say years later.
- 27:30They see the wig where it fell and then this branch it got stuck on has grown
- 27:35out and there's a lot of leaves on it.
- 27:37Right. So it shows time has gone by. Not exactly how much time. What once-
- 27:42Once again brilliant visual exactly telling by george
- 27:46miller but just on that did you hear about the actor who
- 27:49plays rectus erectus he received
- 27:52because it's heavily suggested that the character is a pedophile especially
- 27:56in this scene he received a barrage of serious
- 28:00abuse and threats on social media and
- 28:03he basically this is a terrible reflection of the
- 28:06world we live in today but unfortunately not surprising or
- 28:09shocking either and he had to come out and basically make a statement
- 28:12saying i'm an actor i was playing a role
- 28:15you dipshits although he didn't say that but i
- 28:18would say that you know what i mean stop confusing me with
- 28:21a fictional character i played you know unbelievable but
- 28:25but sadly believable at the same time that's that's the
- 28:28wonderful movement millennials you
- 28:31never get this years ago this is the younger generation just
- 28:35wanted to cry oh to be fair to to be
- 28:38fair like back i remember back in even the 90s i'm
- 28:41on soap operas like coronation street there was a serial killer storyline with
- 28:45this um guy richard hillman or something and um that guy was receiving threats
- 28:50in the street so trust me humanity i've never heard i never heard someone taking
- 28:54that by playing a part in my in my in my in the world i grew up in And so,
- 28:59yeah, Yoki, but today's generation is worse.
- 29:03Yeah. Oh, social media. And I guarantee you they could care less what the character
- 29:07is. They just want to cry.
- 29:09Yeah. That's it. Well, yeah, they want to virtue signal and appear,
- 29:13you know, great to their friends in these echo chambers within social media.
- 29:17And it's pathetic, actually.
- 29:19Well, listen to you, echo chambers of social media. Wow. Listen to you being all fucking.
- 29:25Well, it's not a sin. It's just a sad reflection of the world today.
- 29:28Where an actor gets serious abuse and threats for playing a fictional character in a fictional film.
- 29:35But yes, this has always been a thing, but it's heightened now with social media.
- 29:41Registers to Praetorian Jack, my favorite character in the film.
- 29:46Very, very, a very cool character. Very protective of Furiosa.
- 29:51He's technically, and this is what I think he was written in,
- 29:55because technically, he'd be the Mad Max of the film. Totally, 100% agree.
- 29:59So I think that's why he's here. And I almost wish...
- 30:07I almost wish that this was Mad Max and they had brought Tom Hardy back and
- 30:13that's why there's tension between him,
- 30:16but they never planted that in Fury Road so they couldn't do it,
- 30:19but they could have kind of planted that seed where that's why there's tension
- 30:23between them and Fury Road because he has history.
- 30:24He's basically a Max Standen and he's a very likable character.
- 30:28It is, but he does a great job and I do like the character and his demise is fucking soul
- 30:35-destroying fucking soul-destroying again not
- 30:39showing anything gratuitous but you don't need
- 30:42to you still close your eyes well it's even more tragic because
- 30:45him and although they haven't got it
- 30:48on so to speak but him and furiosa have decided
- 30:51they're going to go to the green place together you know
- 30:54she's finally come out of her shell to him you know
- 30:57and he's basically mentored her you know and kept her
- 31:00right you know because she was you know she was
- 31:03quite immature and that you know she wanted to do all alone
- 31:06and stuff but he was the wise mentoring type
- 31:08character you know and yeah it's a brutally tragic
- 31:12death for him you know it is
- 31:15now their first outing with the new rig the rig's badass all fucking chrome
- 31:21and shiny and this is where you're talking about the splinter group the mortar
- 31:26fire uh from dementis yeah they come they come after him and this whole sequence is just so fun.
- 31:35And it's just these motorcycles that turn into paraglides and it's whoever thinks
- 31:42of this shit and then you have this thing called the Bobby Knocker and Octoboss gets sucked into it.
- 31:48I really liked that. I'm so sad he died.
- 31:53The wee guy, the war boy who obviously suffers.
- 31:57The Bobby Knocker guy, the guy who controls the Bobby Knocker.
- 31:59He obviously suffers from dwarfism, but he's basically tasked with looking after
- 32:04the cabbages beside the bobby knocker.
- 32:08You know what, though? It's funny you bring him up. There's a story behind that
- 32:12kid. He's a kid, by the way.
- 32:15So he was on, he's been bullied his whole life, sadly. In real life.
- 32:19Because the scumbags around him in real life. So he went on social media,
- 32:23and it's on Facebook. You can watch it. It's on YouTube.
- 32:26And he begged people to stop hurting him. He just wants a friend.
- 32:30It's the most soul-destroying thing you can watch a child go through.
- 32:36And I'm not sure of his age. I don't want to misspeak there,
- 32:39but you felt so sorry for him because he does have some kind of dwarfism or whatever it is.
- 32:44Again, I don't want to misspeak. And George Miller saw that because he's Australian,
- 32:48I believe, or New Zealand, I'm not sure.
- 32:50But George Miller cast him because of that. I thought that was fucking awesome.
- 32:53No, I mean, again, that goes back to the social media bullying and stuff.
- 32:59Very possibly this kid was bullied in real life as well, just awful.
- 33:04But good on George Miller. Well, that's what he said.
- 33:07Yeah, that's why he was on. But that's a good thing about social media.
- 33:10He went on there as a platform.
- 33:13And so it's kind of a double-edged sword with social media really, isn't it?
- 33:17But yeah, this whole sequence, again, you kind of got to see yourself.
- 33:22But again, cooler, you know, and I just love when Akbar's getting sucked in
- 33:26and the poor guy gets shot in the head.
- 33:28You don't see it, but sadly, it's Furioso who has to turn on the Bobby knocker.
- 33:32And what's just great right as well is
- 33:36furiosa at this point is reckless and
- 33:39she makes mistakes and you can you can see it you know with some um but it's
- 33:43the wiser um older sort of more sort of experienced hand of a praetorian jack
- 33:50who then begins sort of mentoring her and showing her are the right way.
- 33:54So yeah, poorly written.
- 33:57Now I found out what, I had to look it up.
- 34:02So Furiosa starts emulating Jack and they put it, they take an oil slick and
- 34:08they put it over their eyes.
- 34:10And the reason they do that, it's they represent a symbol of authority.
- 34:17So anybody, that's how they mark themselves.
- 34:21I knew it represented something, but that just didn't know what,
- 34:24but yeah, that makes sense. Yeah, that's what it means.
- 34:28So if they're coming into a town, whether it's Gas Town or Bullet Town,
- 34:32they know right away that these are the guys we talked to. Yeah.
- 34:36And that's why Furiosa and Fury Road still has it to this day. Yeah.
- 34:43I like the – it's funny because – how do I put this?
- 34:48The Citadel, yeah, they're scumbags, but they're trying to make a way of life.
- 34:53And I'm not condoning it. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to – I'm not –
- 34:57but they're not like causing – they're not doing genocide or anything like that.
- 35:01They're just trying to adapt, whether it's the wrong way.
- 35:06Because when you see Bullet Town, and you mentioned with Gas Town,
- 35:09how civil it was when you met the guy who controls Gas Town,
- 35:13He was doing art. And Morton Joe's brother?
- 35:16Painting a Michelangelo or something. That's Morton Joe's brother?
- 35:18And yes, Morton Joe's brother. And then you have Bullet Town and this guy's
- 35:24just going, listen, we've got a problem.
- 35:27This is Gastown. This guy's a joker. This guy needs to go.
- 35:31I expect a brilliant writing by Miller because it's a case of the best villains
- 35:37is where they have reasons for being villains.
- 35:41Do you know what I mean? And in their eyes, they're not the
- 35:44villains they're trying to make a better world like a morton joe at
- 35:47the citadel the madness is just nuts and
- 35:50he's just a bit of a loose cannon to say the least but
- 35:53with a morton joe and stuff there's more of a sort of he's more methodical and
- 35:57there's there's a method to his madness and that he thinks he's making the world
- 36:01the wasteland a better place and technically in ways he is especially compared
- 36:06to the mentis so yeah you know i i would sort of certainly back Back that up, what you're saying?
- 36:13And it goes also to how smart they can be.
- 36:18So when Morton Joe is getting the information back from what his brother sent,
- 36:25not his brother, but from the Bullet Town leader, Bullet Farm leader,
- 36:29he goes, go back there and you're going to go back to Bullet Farm,
- 36:33no oil, but fill bullets, ammo, and then we're going to take Dementus out.
- 36:39Because when they go back to Dementus again, Again, the whole,
- 36:43it's all wreaked havoc. It's fucking batshit crazy.
- 36:47It's literally demented. It's literally demented. Yeah, he's,
- 36:51it's, they're all, he's like a fucking violent child, you know,
- 36:56throwing his, you know, his boys out of the pram at this point.
- 36:59He's lost complete control.
- 37:00And yeah, it's just brilliantly realized just in sort of every department, you know.
- 37:09Because they go back, Dementis gives him a message then, go to Immortan Joe
- 37:14and tell him I want a new deal in three days at noon.
- 37:18And Immortan Joe was like, no, fill this tank with bullets. We're taking this
- 37:22fucker out now. We're done. Had enough of his shit, basically.
- 37:26Yeah, at this point. I think at this point, too, they're tired of the threats from Dementis.
- 37:30And I think what they're thinking is if he's already lost control of his men,
- 37:35And there's no way he's going to be, you know, we'd be able to take him down easily.
- 37:39He's not the threat we thought he was, I guess he could say.
- 37:41Yeah. And if he can't even control his own man, you know, he has absolutely
- 37:45no hope of controlling one of these communities like Gastown, you know.
- 37:50When Jack, they're heading back to the bullet farm,
- 37:54he stops the truck and he gets Furiosa out of the truck and he goes,
- 37:58no, no, Furiosa, you take this car with the two bikes,
- 38:02you drive behind us and i'm making you
- 38:05warrior boy you're gonna be in front of the truck you drive and
- 38:08if you're also didn't understand this i did he he
- 38:11was giving her a way out he also he was giving her the car he was giving her
- 38:16the bikes get the fuck out of here get out of here now she doesn't she follows
- 38:20with him to bullet town but that's what he was trying to do i had a slightly
- 38:24different take on it and that i i thought that jack knew that they were going
- 38:29to go for the ones up front
- 38:30first so he was actually spurring her sacrificing war
- 38:34boys for um for her you know
- 38:37that's why he brings the war boy up to the front instead
- 38:39where it's because he knows that whenever they attack they're going to go for
- 38:44basically the war rig right at the front of it so if he keeps her on the sidelines
- 38:49she would have more of a chance of surviving so he was basically putting her
- 38:53life above the war boy that he brings up front yeah i do think though he wanted oh yeah Yeah,
- 38:59yeah, he was governor of the option as well. That was his way of saying that.
- 39:04But this whole ambushing is fucking intense. Yeah. What a wonderful ambushing. I mean.
- 39:11It's going to show how badass Jack is when Furiosa decides to snipe at Dementors and he's on that tower.
- 39:19And all fucking Jack does is just fucking crash into it to bring it down.
- 39:24It's just incredible action scenes.
- 39:28And also, you go to see how much of our self-serving Dementors is,
- 39:32where he's throwing his own right-hand man in front of him, and Furiosa's shooting
- 39:36him in the face instead, just so he can see who it is that's actually shooting
- 39:41at him. You know, he's ruthless.
- 39:43Well, yeah, he did the same thing with Octobot. Yeah, he's ruthless. Yep.
- 39:48So sadly, now, before this all kicks off, he fires that green flare.
- 39:55And I had looked that up. That was, he was telling her to go.
- 40:00He was telling Furiosa, get out of here. The green, it means go.
- 40:05And that's what he was trying to tell Furiosa when he shot the green flare.
- 40:08Flare because these those flares mean different colors
- 40:11we kind of talked about that in fury road but green
- 40:14means go and that's what he was trying to tell yes but she
- 40:18obviously doesn't she decides to help him and when they get caught
- 40:21fucking worth seeing the film tragic she
- 40:24loses her arm which has the tattoo over the
- 40:27young places and he gets dragged
- 40:30around in circles we don't see it they kind of
- 40:33they pull away but again dementias is
- 40:36so power stricken and so egomaniac
- 40:40that he doesn't realize all the
- 40:43dust that's going around and them killing jack furiosa tears
- 40:47off her own arm because he was hanging anyway after the
- 40:50accident it is a little bit of a sort of
- 40:53a film cliche and a bit of a cheat where
- 40:56it's like you spur someone to tell you their
- 40:59evil plan and named james bond films are well known for it
- 41:01but what how they get away with it is
- 41:04because it's so well realized so we basically say to uh furiosa that he wants
- 41:09her to watch jack being tortured and killed but then while basically he's doing
- 41:15this they're doing that like you say with all the dust and stuff she's forging
- 41:18her escape plan which is basically ripping off her own arm and.
- 41:23Yeah, but they planted that seed.
- 41:26I mean, even from the beginning, when he made Furiosa look at her mother's death
- 41:33and then the bicyclist fighting for a bike and making her watch this, that's his nature.
- 41:39That's what he does to her. So he does it again, this time to Jack,
- 41:43another loved one that she was falling for, like her mother.
- 41:46So that's standard play. And then we talked about how he's, he's,
- 41:52again, he, we talked about how he's, he's not very good at what he does.
- 41:57So yeah, he gives her the whole spiel, but he, he, he's so blinded by his ignorance
- 42:02that she's just going, I'm just going to escape here.
- 42:04So those seeds are all kind of pre-planted for her to be able to make this escape.
- 42:08Hence the reason why, why she's.
- 42:10It doesn't become that roll your eyes moment. It becomes more believable.
- 42:14Because it's George Miller basically behind it and he knows exactly what he's doing.
- 42:19So even whenever there are little cheats that have to happen for the sake of
- 42:22the plot and the story, he will make them work due to, you know,
- 42:27planting these seeds earlier on and actually make them make sense.
- 42:31Whereas some films are just like, don't give a shit. You know what I mean?
- 42:34Yeah, there's a difference between a cheat and this. This is,
- 42:39I don't like to cheat. They planted the seed.
- 42:41Yeah. It connects the dots. That's because Miller's a professional filmmaker.
- 42:45Yeah, this is where we see George Miller.
- 42:49Oh, George Miller. Fuck. There's George Miller.
- 42:51He's in it. Hi, guys. You didn't see it.
- 42:54Got it. Tongue tied. This is where we see Mad Max sitting on the cliff.
- 42:59And he's the one who takes her to the Citadel. Yes. And leaves her there.
- 43:06And so there you go. Well, there's Mad Max can't be only one.
- 43:10But it's important to the plot because he saves her life. You know, if, yeah.
- 43:14And I thought it was a good scene where you see him eating the dog food and
- 43:17stuff and you see the Interceptor, love the Interceptor.
- 43:20And it always, you know, it always makes me sad when I see the Interceptor destroyed
- 43:25in, well, a lot of the Mad Max films.
- 43:28Coolest car in film history. Don't care what anyone says. And yeah,
- 43:32it's nice to see him, but I would have liked to see, obviously,
- 43:35so much more of him. but we didn't get that.
- 43:40We get this narrator who's the, when she's plotting her revenge after she's
- 43:47back at the Citadel and the narrator talks about, and that's pretty much the
- 43:52history of Anne Boleyn's narrator.
- 43:53Yes, yes. He talks about how this all became of a 40-day waste and war.
- 43:59There have always been wars. How this kind of came about. Yeah,
- 44:01brilliant speech. Yeah.
- 44:03Yeah, but the one line that is important is everything in this world became
- 44:09eye for an eye, teeth for a teeth.
- 44:12And this is how, and as he says this, we see Vioriosep, you know,
- 44:20getting her arm, the mechanical arm on, she's getting ready for her eye for an eye moment.
- 44:26It's a great speech by the history master. So, yeah, we get some revenge sequences
- 44:32here, some of the characters, which is fine. It's pretty fun.
- 44:36And then we meet Dementus. I'm kind of broken up a little bit with Dementus.
- 44:41The narrator kind of tells you what happened.
- 44:45Obviously, she has a chance to kill him right there and then.
- 44:48And the narrator says, the story is, we don't know if she left him for dead.
- 44:54Did she shoot him right there and then? But the narrator kind of clarifies what
- 44:58I did hear and what I was told,
- 45:01that he was planted among this tree and all these, I think it's silly,
- 45:07to be honest with you. To me, it totally works, and I'll tell you why.
- 45:10Because there is a sort of, within all of the Mad Max films,
- 45:14there's sort of a Tales by the Campfire, or Tales of the Wasteland,
- 45:19field of them all, where it's all sort of a myth and legend mixed with what really happened.
- 45:25I certainly get that feel from all of them, ties back into the whole Western thing, you know.
- 45:30So I like that there's all, like, the whole Chinese whispers type of,
- 45:34you know, half-fury, which is a great scene, Great Head to Head by Taylor Joy and.
- 45:40What do you call it then, Dementus at the very end, you know,
- 45:43where he's telling her about, you're going to become me. Yes,
- 45:45it's a basic revenge story ultimately.
- 45:48But no, no, that makes sense with the whole Chinese whispers about what really
- 45:51happened. What did she do to him? Did she crucify him like he did with her mother?
- 45:55And then he says, but actually the history man says, and Furiosa told me this
- 45:59herself, it's pretty much horror.
- 46:03You know, this stuff with the tree. And yes, it is a bit cheesy and a bit sort
- 46:08of horror cheesy, easy, but I like it.
- 46:10Again, it's down to personal tastes. I like crazy shit like that.
- 46:14You like it because there's a naked old man underneath the tree.
- 46:18You were going to say that? Yep.
- 46:20It's all the way back to your fucking horror crap.
- 46:24Whenever I see on the trail, it's like, whoa. No, we took one.
- 46:28But no, it's real. It works for me. Yes!
- 46:32I'm not just... But do you see where she planted them? Yeah,
- 46:36it's up at the top of the citadel.
- 46:39You know, but she planted them where her and Jack bonded for the first time
- 46:43when they put their heads together.
- 46:44I love the touch as well, how there's actual fruit grows from the tree.
- 46:50And you see the breeders, you know, she's given it to the breeders and stuff.
- 46:53They're actually the fruit that's come from the business.
- 46:56It's again, more cannibalism. Yeah, because she needs, well,
- 47:00what she needs to do is give them nutrients because then the next scene,
- 47:04she's getting them out of there. and then we cut to the credits and then we
- 47:10see Fury Road. I love the credits.
- 47:11I love how it's that condensed Fury Road and the credits with that superb score really effective.
- 47:18And you see Nox again. I love Nox. I hope people catch on and it finds a footing
- 47:25and we can get a conclusion of Furiosa and Max together. That'd be kind of neat.
- 47:30I'd like to see that. But again, we never know. You never know.
- 47:34But guys, this is an end for our Mad Max retrospective. Where would you rate them? In order.
- 47:41Road Warrior, Fury Road, Furiosa, Mad Max, and I don't rate Beyond Thunderdome
- 47:49because it's shit. Well, I would rate them in order.
- 47:51I think the best one is Beyond Thunderdome. No, I'm only joking.
- 47:54No, I would rate them, Road Warrior, the original Mad Max 1.
- 48:01Then Fury Road, then Furiosa, then last, Beyond Thunderdome.
- 48:06Yeah, see, Max, I think Max is too, yeah, I like Max. It's tough. They're all good.
- 48:13They all tell a great story, but I just think I like the characters in Furiosa
- 48:18because a lot of them carried over from Fury Road so I had that stability of knowing them.
- 48:25To be honest the first two, the original and Road Warrior probably a bit of
- 48:31nostalgia there with me as well but yeah so it would be 2, 1 then Fury Road,
- 48:37Furiosa and Beyond Thunderdome for me.
- 48:41Now Fury Road it almost came first. I was so tempted to say,
- 48:45okay, I might have misspoke.
- 48:46It's not as good as World Warrior, but I don't know.
- 48:50You know, my bad guys, my favorite bad guys come from the World Warrior,
- 48:54so I guess... Humongous and Waze?
- 48:56Yeah. By the way, I thought... Running Wails. The start of Furiosa when we were
- 49:01talking about the mother with the slingshot weapon, I felt that that weapon
- 49:06was very similar to Waze's,
- 49:08you know, arrow-y thing, so a reference possibly who knows.
- 49:14But he had a spear gun. I know, but it's similar. It's like a wee sort of tiny sort of thing.
- 49:17No, he had what they call a born arrow gun. But it was small,
- 49:20so it was almost like a slingshot. I don't know.
- 49:23No. Okay. Another really rare reference there by Trevor. We got to get that
- 49:28in. Check it out the other way, folks.
- 49:29Whenever a hamster wants to turn to it. That's a surfer dude.
