- 0:15what God is doing in us and in our community.
- 0:18This fall, we're living in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
- 0:21and John and learning how to live from our model, Jesus.
- 0:25This sermon is part of our series The Gospels.

- 0:39Good morning everyone. This morning's reading comes
- 0:43from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 19.
- 0:45Starting in personal Jesus entered Jericho and made his way
- 0:49through the town. There was a man named Zacchaeus
- 0:53who was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become
- 0:56very rich. He tried to get a look at Jesus,
- 0:59but he was too short to see over the crowd, so he ran ahead and
- 1:03climbed a Sycamore fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was
- 1:06going to pass that way. When Jesus came by, he looked up
- 1:10at Zacchaeus and called him by name.
- 1:13Zacchaeus. He said quick, come down, I must
- 1:17be a guest in your home today. Zacchaeus quickly climbed down
- 1:20and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy, but
- 1:24the people were displeased. He has gone to be the guest of a
- 1:28notorious center, they grumbled. Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood
- 1:32before the Lord and said, I will give half my wealth to the poor
- 1:35Lord. If I cheated people on their
- 1:37taxes, I will give them back four times as much.
- 1:41Jesus responded. Salvation has come to his this
- 1:44home today. For this man has shown himself
- 1:46to be a true son of Abraham. For the son of man came to seek
- 1:50and save those who are lost. This is the word of God for the
- 1:54people of God. And before we start singing
- 1:59about a Wee little Man, I would like to share a blessing that is
- 2:07rare in these past few months. But I got some time to sit down
- 2:11and relax with my wife at home and so we started scrolling
- 2:15through Netflix to find something to watch and new
- 2:19documentary about the mob was on.
- 2:23I don't know if anyone had seen this.
- 2:25It's Philadelphia verse the Mob. And I of course had to watch
- 2:30because it's right across the bridge there and even more
- 2:35personal to Collingswood because the owner of Kitchen Conciliere,
- 2:42I'll get it eventually. Who owns one of the restaurants
- 2:45in town that was allegedly involved with the mob and
- 2:52doesn't like to share stories with customers?
- 2:55Was on there sharing about all of the people that he grew up
- 2:59with and we're friends with. And he was my favorite person.
- 3:04Not just because his restaurant is a couple blocks from church,
- 3:08but he was really able to see past the actions of certain
- 3:13individuals and view them as a person nonetheless.
- 3:18I have two of my favorite quotes of his.
- 3:20He says. I remember one time I saw him
- 3:23knock a kid out. We were in 7th grade.
- 3:26I mean he was brutal. Good guy, Family Guy, nice guy.
- 3:32In regards to another alleged mob boss, we all went to school
- 3:37together, he used to rob the lunch money and stuff like that.
- 3:40Joey was wild, good guy, just crazy, right?
- 3:46And so mobs and other gangs are known for causing their own
- 3:52community pain for personal gain, and we see that with
- 3:58Zacchaeus himself. And before I get started, I
- 4:02would love to open us in a word of prayer.
- 4:09Lord, would you speak, Would you put me aside?
- 4:18Would your word be afresh in our hearts this morning?
- 4:24Would we share the same heart as you for the lost, that they
- 4:29would be saved in Jesus name, Amen.
- 4:35As I was reading through the scripture readings for this
- 4:38week, if you've been following along, I got to the very end and
- 4:44I started to see this IKEA story in a new light.
- 4:48And I would argue that if you have the imagination, it is a
- 4:52very Philadelphia story. I imagine Jesus not on the road,
- 5:00but at the top of the Art Museum steps right below the newly
- 5:05reinstated Rocky statue. And that's where he decides to
- 5:09teach and speak right in front of the Benjamin Franklin
- 5:12Parkway. You know, he starts teaching and
- 5:15people start getting news that Jesus is in town.
- 5:18And So what do we do right as a church?
- 5:20We send out an emergency e-mail, we put it on Facebook, We get in
- 5:24the church van, we all start jumping in the pack hoe and
- 5:27flying over to see Jesus speak. And so as the steps start to
- 5:33fill up and of course, I, I would hope there's a nice pastor
- 5:37section, right? Pastors get front row to see
- 5:40Jesus speak and I don't think he would be in mummer's attire,
- 5:47though Eric may argue with me on that.
- 5:50Jesus was dressed as the common man right when he was arrested.
- 5:54That's why Judas had to go and kiss him on the cheek so that
- 5:59they could tell which one was Jesus right dressed like the
- 6:02ordinary man. So I like to imagine matching
- 6:06sweatpants and sweatshirt like Rocky casually being with the
- 6:12people, right? Preaching, sharing the good news
- 6:18that everyone desires. They come from far and wide to
- 6:21hear him speak. And if you haven't heard of
- 6:25recent Jesus didn't just attract the righteous, right?
- 6:31He attracted everyone. There's times where it says
- 6:34specifically that the sinners were drawn toward Jesus and his
- 6:39teachings. And when I think of more modern
- 6:43day centers, I think crimes, right?
- 6:45They harm people. And if you're unfamiliar, within
- 6:50about 3-4 miles as the crow flies, we are close to the
- 6:55world's largest open air drug market.
- 6:59It resides in the neighborhood of Kensington, Philadelphia.
- 7:04And just last week, if not two weeks ago, the FBI did a large
- 7:10raid in Kensington, getting one of the largest suppliers of
- 7:15drugs to the area and getting 33 people are now put on charges
- 7:23with 32 of them have either been captured or they were already in
- 7:29prison, which means there is one still at large.
- 7:32And so I imagine in our story at the Art Museum steps that this
- 7:38individual could be maybe not the tallest and the individual
- 7:43just like Zacchaeus and needed to climb a light post.
- 7:47You can imagine it greased, not greased.
- 7:49It doesn't really affect the point here is that maybe he's
- 7:54unable to see Jesus or people started to recognize him and for
- 7:59his own safety he needed to get apart from the crowd.
- 8:05And so amongst all of this, we have Jesus point out to him.
- 8:10Come down. Oh, there we go.
- 8:13Little early, but I'll take it. If you didn't have a great
- 8:16imagination, this can be your aid with Jesus at the top with
- 8:21the crowds below, skyline in the distance and Jesus says come
- 8:28down or Jesus comes down. He says I must be a guest in
- 8:31your home today. Jesus is on his way to
- 8:34Kensington. Everyone else in the crowd that
- 8:38came from all over must have started talking, right?
- 8:41Pastor Scott and I are obviously in the front row there and you
- 8:45guys right behind us and out of all of us faithful or attempting
- 8:51to be faithful believers attending most of our days, he
- 8:55overlooks us and sees the one at the top of the light post and
- 9:00wants to go be with him, right? We may all be thinking just like
- 9:06those around Zacchaeus, why would he go with that notorious
- 9:11Sinner? And Jesus goes and he says the
- 9:16guy who is currently on the run says that he's going to turn
- 9:19himself in, give half of his wealth to the poor and he's
- 9:23going to pay for everyone's rehab that bought drugs from
- 9:26him. And I'm sure something in our
- 9:30guts says that this is the unbelievable part, right?
- 9:35With that, images aid, it may be a little easier to imagine the
- 9:40speech, to imagine the crowds and what that would look like,
- 9:45and even a greased light post in Philadelphia.
- 9:49But for someone like that to repent and turn from their ways
- 9:54just isn't possible. Wouldn't it be nice if it worked
- 9:59like that? Do you not believe in a God that
- 10:04changes hearts? Did he not change yours?
- 10:09Or maybe you can believe that he can change this criminal's heart
- 10:16in this fictitious telling of the Philly story.
- 10:21But then I would ask, who is your Zacchaeus in your life who
- 10:27seems too far gone and impossible to win over with the
- 10:32gospel? Couple examples come to mind.
- 10:36Especially recently we had one of our youth who is in a musical
- 10:41after a practice was invited to go to Starbucks with a friend
- 10:45afterwards and maybe acquaintance and she said oh I'm
- 10:51going to youth group instead and the girl flipped her off for
- 10:55wanting to go to youth group instead of going to Starbucks.
- 11:00Probably not the first person that you think is going to come
- 11:02to Jesus right after. I might be a little more
- 11:05hesitant, or someone at work that speaks poorly of the
- 11:09church, or on social media speaks poorly of Christians or
- 11:13Jesus or his teachings may be the last person that you think
- 11:16of to reach out to, to share the good news.
- 11:21And so I wanted to give us 3 practical steps in which we can
- 11:25be like Jesus who came to seek and save those who are lost.
- 11:32First off, we need to have hope, right?
- 11:37A lot of times our youth and young adults come to me about
- 11:41people that they have lost hope for because of the poor actions
- 11:46of the individual. And I always try to encourage,
- 11:50try to encourage that. I've seen God do greater with
- 11:54worse, right? As we look in the Scripture, we
- 11:58have Zacchaeus who was essentially robbing his
- 12:01community, Matthew, one of the apostles doing the same, Paul
- 12:05who explicitly tried to get Christians arrested and beaten
- 12:11and put to death. And yet look at how much we
- 12:14admire what God was able to do with their lives.
- 12:19We also see here in Romans chapter 15 verse 13 that Paul
- 12:27prays for the Gentiles that God, the source of hope, will fill
- 12:31you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him.
- 12:36Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power
- 12:41of the Holy Spirit, right? God, our source of hope.
- 12:49And it's because of our trust in Him, not trust in the person.
- 12:54We do not hope in what they are capable of doing, but we have
- 13:00hope in what God is capable of doing in and through them.
- 13:05As #1 do not lose hope. Secondly, we need to go to them,
- 13:12right? Church isn't the only way to
- 13:16evangelize. It is important.
- 13:18Invite people. I believe we have an incredible
- 13:21body and after our sermon series on what it means to be the body
- 13:24of Christ, that I would hope that this would be an exemplary
- 13:28place for them to encounter those walking with Jesus and to
- 13:32encounter him themselves. But it is not.
- 13:35The only way that we evangelize is by sending an invite to
- 13:39church, right? It could have easily been done
- 13:42at the Art Museum steps. Come back next week and we'll
- 13:45find a more comfortable light post for you, right?
- 13:49It is not just the invitation to the big gathering, but
- 13:52intentionally going out to the lost.
- 13:56And so we need to go out to the lost.
- 14:00Third, you may be thinking to yourself, well, the kid that
- 14:03just flipped me off because I'm going to youth group is probably
- 14:06not going to let me in their home so I can share Jesus with
- 14:09them, right? And we cannot force ourselves
- 14:13into people's homes. I hope that is clear.
- 14:14We are not forcing ourselves into people's homes and yet we
- 14:19are looking for opportunities to be in people's homes.
- 14:24And if the doors aren't open, we can always pray.
- 14:28The power of prayer cannot be lost on us and it is not
- 14:33uncommon for it to get lost on us, even those in Scripture
- 14:37while praying for God that prayer actually works.
- 14:42I want to give the example from Acts chapter 12 when Peter is in
- 14:46prison, and it says that while Peter was in prison, the church
- 14:50prayed very earnestly for him and Peter didn't believe.
- 14:55After God miraculously freed Peter from prison, and he did it
- 15:01in such a way that Peter couldn't believe it.
- 15:03And if you're curious how he did it, go to Acts 12 later this
- 15:06week to find out. We see in verse 11, Peter
- 15:10finally came to his senses. It's really true.
- 15:14He said the Lord has sent his Angel and save me from Herod and
- 15:18from what the Jewish leaders had planned to do to me.
- 15:22When he realized this, he went to the home of Mary, the mother
- 15:26of John Mark, where many were gathered for prayer.
- 15:28All right, they're praying for him because he's still in
- 15:31prison. He knocked at the door in the
- 15:33gate and a servant girl named Rhoda came to open it.
- 15:38When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that
- 15:41instead of opening the door, she ran back inside and told
- 15:44everyone, Peter is standing at the door.
- 15:49You're out of your mind, they said.
- 15:51When she insisted, they decided it must be his Angel.
- 15:55Meanwhile, Peter knocking continued knocking.
- 15:58When they finally opened the door and saw him, they were
- 16:01amazed. While praying for Peter to be
- 16:08released, the logical conclusion was that he must have died and
- 16:13it was his Angel, right? And yet, that's where we can
- 16:20find ourselves so regularly when we pray for others, especially
- 16:25those that we've prayed for for so long.
- 16:27Like, yes, Lord, I'm still going to contend for them in the
- 16:29faith, but if they actually come to believe in You, there's got
- 16:35to be something else going on, right?
- 16:38And it's something that we need to overcome, just as they did
- 16:43here in Acts chapter 12. As he's standing there and
- 16:47they're looking at him, I, I'm baffled.
- 16:50And yet I'm not surprised in the least at the same time, because
- 16:54of how well I know myself. And that phrase I love in the
- 16:59new Living Translation when they say you're out of your mind,
- 17:04right? You're out of your mind that our
- 17:06prayers worked. That's essentially what they're
- 17:09saying. And so we need to contend in
- 17:15prayer, look for opportunities when we can go towards them and
- 17:20not lose hope. The message this morning is
- 17:23simple, but it is not easy. Let us pray.
- 17:31Lord, I thank you so much for how you meet us, how you meet
- 17:38those in Scripture, and how you share these stories that we can
- 17:42learn from. How your son lived, how your son
- 17:47taught, how your son loved. Lord, how you act because you
- 17:53want to see the lost saved. Would you give us that same
- 18:00heart? Would You give us the hope and
- 18:05what You can do in the hearts of others?
- 18:09We ask that you would give us the boldness and the direction
- 18:12to go even when it's inconvenient, even when it's not
- 18:16in our calendar, even when it's going to a place that we never
- 18:21thought that we would be. We ask that you would give us an
- 18:26earnest heart of prayer that we would ceaselessly go before You,
- 18:31put our trust in You for those that are on Your heart and
- 18:36should be on ours as well. We thank you and praise You this
- 18:40morning as we prepare to partake and Your body offered up not
- 18:45only for us and those in the front of the crowd, but also
- 18:50those in the back that are shaped in Jesus name, Amen.
