- 1:03I can't wait to meet you and here are some of the questions
- 1:06that you might have. Let's find those answers.
- 1:09Chat too soon. Hi, my name is Carla Pretorius
- 1:11and I'm a registered therapist. I'm also neuro divergent myself
- 1:15and I've been in the field of neurodiversity for the last 20
- 1:18years. I would like to address a
- 1:20question that we often receive. I'm going to read it out.
- 1:24I'm on the autism waiting list. I've been for three years and
- 1:28still not received an assessment.
- 1:31This is quite a common question that we receive as clinicians
- 1:36where the waiting list just takes so long, sometimes years,
- 1:40in this case, three years and the person is still waiting.
- 1:44First of all, I'm sorry. I understand that it must be
- 1:48frustrating to wait this long, to feel that nobody is
- 1:53listening, nobody is getting back to you.
- 1:55Some suggestions from my side as a therapist would be to ask when
- 2:01is this going to happen to kind of pester them a little bit.
- 2:04And then to also if you're in the UK, you can ask for the
- 2:08rights to choose path to get more information on that so that
- 2:12that goes a little bit faster than the normal NHS route.
- 2:17If you're in a different country though, it might be something a
- 2:21different route that you need to follow.
- 2:23So maybe ask your doctor or your psychologist if they can help
- 2:27you. But there are definitely things
- 2:30that you can do before receiving a diagnosis.
- 2:34I believe that there are five steps towards self advocating.
- 2:39The first one for me is being self aware and that includes
- 2:44really getting to know who you are, what you like, what you
- 2:48dislike, what's your sensory profile like?
- 2:51Just sitting there and understanding why are you
- 2:54getting a little bit frustrated because of different sounds,
- 2:58different sights, different smells.
- 3:00And then possibly also just looking at what are
- 3:03accommodations that you can include in your life.
- 3:05So that goes into the second step of self regulating.
- 3:09So really regulating those, those sensory needs and other
- 3:13needs that you might have, finding ways to cope in
- 3:17scenarios that might be a little bit overwhelming if you have to
- 3:20go into them, of course. And then the other self is also
- 3:23to learn more. So to self educate, to find out
- 3:28what these terms are. Where are these advocates that
- 3:31you relate to? Is it is, are there some videos
- 3:34that you can listen to and try out in your own life?
- 3:37Maybe somebody like Dan Jones has some videos that you really
- 3:41relate to well. And those are things that you
- 3:43can incorporate into your own everyday schedule.
- 3:46And then looking at self love and self acceptance, that's a
- 3:52big step. So really understanding all of
- 3:55these things, incorporating those accommodations and then
- 3:59starting to like who you are, starting to enjoy your quirks.
- 4:03And then the last one would be to advocate for yourself.
- 4:06So I really do believe in those steps and now it is a lot to
- 4:10digest. So if you have any questions on
- 4:12any of those steps, let me know in the comments section below.
- 4:15But I would love to hear your thoughts on what do you do to
- 4:19help you gain insights into waiting while you're waiting for
- 4:24this diagnosis process. And if anyone has some ideas
- 4:28specifically to their country, what they did to decrease the
- 4:31time in receiving an assessment, please do write that down as
- 4:36well because then we can also learn from each other.
- 4:38I think that's the main thing for me is to really share what I
- 4:42know, but also learn from like the clients that I serve from
- 4:46you. So thank you so much for being
- 4:48here. I'll speak to you soon.
- 4:49So don't. Forget if you want to book a
- 4:51session with Cal, there's a link in the description down below.
