Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: A Critical Conversation & An Emotional Hangover
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: What's going on? Everyone? Emily Abadi here, you are listening
- 0:23Speaker 1: to five minute Friday from Hurdle. Oh my gosh. I
- 0:28Speaker 1: have been digesting how I feel after last night's Safety
- 0:33Speaker 1: and Numbers panel all day to day. If you asked
- 0:39Speaker 1: me how it went, I would tell you it went
- 0:41Speaker 1: quite well. And I'm typically my biggest critic. It felt
- 0:46Speaker 1: so surreal to have such a beautiful gathering of people
- 0:51Speaker 1: in the community to talk about something that frustrates so
- 0:56Speaker 1: many of us. The issues that were dealing with when
- 1:01Speaker 1: it comes to safety in running, and we chatted so
- 1:05Speaker 1: much about so many different things, ranging from tools that
- 1:08Speaker 1: we can use to be more safe, to the concept
- 1:12Speaker 1: of allyship and what it looks for, what it looks
- 1:15Speaker 1: like for men to be allies of women in running,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and different scenarios in which that may play out. A
- 1:26Speaker 1: lot of you have reached out to me asking if
- 1:28Speaker 1: it was recorded. It's not recorded. It was not recorded. However,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I will be having more conversations on this topic, and
- 1:35Speaker 1: I promise to bring this to the feed as soon
- 1:38Speaker 1: as those happen. But with that said, as I'm sitting
- 1:43Speaker 1: here and I'm processing all of my emotions, the thing
- 1:45Speaker 1: that I keep coming back to is just the phrase
- 1:47Speaker 1: what's next. And I think that is the most beautiful
- 1:50Speaker 1: thing this place to be in when you're an entrepreneur
- 1:53Speaker 1: and you do something that feels so right and you're
- 1:56Speaker 1: asking yourself what's next, because there's this really great clashing
- 2:00Speaker 1: passion and purpose. After looking out at the one hundred
- 2:05Speaker 1: and fifty plus people in the crowd last night, I
- 2:08Speaker 1: can say with certainty that this is so important and
- 2:12Speaker 1: something that so many of us I think. I use
- 2:15Speaker 1: the word frustrated already, but feel frustrated about feel so
- 2:19Speaker 1: frustrated that the thing that makes me feel good in
- 2:23Speaker 1: my body for the most part, running, that thing is
- 2:27Speaker 1: taken away from me because of so many things outside
- 2:30Speaker 1: of my control. I mean, just this morning there was
- 2:33Speaker 1: news of a woman that was attacked and raped running
- 2:37Speaker 1: in the morning on the West Side Highway. It's one
- 2:40Speaker 1: of the most popular running paths in New York City.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Just today, the morning after we gathered and talked about
- 2:46Speaker 1: what can we do to feel more safe in our
- 2:48Speaker 1: community and how can we show up for one another.
- 2:50Speaker 1: There are always going to be things that are beyond
- 2:53Speaker 1: our control. So while I feel frustrated and admittedly a
- 2:58Speaker 1: little scared about the state of what is going on
- 3:01Speaker 1: in running and our safety. I also feel so much
- 3:06Speaker 1: purpose connected to the conversation that I had last night
- 3:10Speaker 1: and the conversations I want to have going forward, and
- 3:13Speaker 1: the action that can come from those conversations. I always
- 3:19Speaker 1: ask myself what's next in the times where I feel
- 3:24Speaker 1: so certain and aligned and in my purpose, and also
- 3:27Speaker 1: in the bad times too. I'll never forget. I was
- 3:32Speaker 1: in talks for this really big contract in April of
- 3:35Speaker 1: twenty twenty one, and it fell through, and I was
- 3:39Speaker 1: texting my father just like absolutely beside myself. And while
- 3:43Speaker 1: he did provide some space for me to express my feelings,
- 3:49Speaker 1: his question to me, like it is, each and every
- 3:51Speaker 1: time that something doesn't go my way as well as
- 3:54Speaker 1: something goes my way, is all right, what's next? And
- 4:01Speaker 1: it's up to us to get to that place. It's
- 4:03Speaker 1: up to us not to get complacent. It's up to
- 4:06Speaker 1: us to remember that regardless of the outcome of one
- 4:09Speaker 1: specific event, we then have to keep moving forward. So
- 4:14Speaker 1: perhaps this weekend, maybe you're lacing up and Sunday doesn't
- 4:18Speaker 1: go as planned, and so yes, feel all the feelings
- 4:22Speaker 1: that go with that disappointment. But then I encourage you,
- 4:26Speaker 1: if this happens to you, to ask what's next, which
- 4:31Speaker 1: is exactly what I had to ask myself after the
- 4:32Speaker 1: New York City Marathon last year. If we're being real,
- 4:36Speaker 1: when we have these moments that feel like small wins,
- 4:39Speaker 1: when we feel that momentum, the best thing that we
- 4:42Speaker 1: can do is keep showing up rather than rest, because
- 4:46Speaker 1: it is in that momentum that we find our true power.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Right it is in that momentum that we can really
- 4:53Speaker 1: expand and explore possibility that maybe we never thought possible
- 4:57Speaker 1: in the first place. And so we're regardless of where
- 5:00Speaker 1: you are right now, regardless of what your big goals are,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I encourage you to to ask yourself that question. And
- 5:09Speaker 1: maybe that's this week's listener prompt. What's next? What do
- 5:14Speaker 1: you want? Whether you feel like you're winning or you
- 5:17Speaker 1: feel like you're losing. The theme, the thread, it is
- 5:21Speaker 1: the same, what's next? And that is entirely within your control.
- 5:29Speaker 1: And now a listener question.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, this is Jen from San Francisco. I'm a
- 5:36Speaker 2: longtime Hurdler listener from the past five years. I used
- 5:40Speaker 2: to live in New York City and during the pandemic,
- 5:42Speaker 2: i actually moved back to San Francisco in the Bay
- 5:44Speaker 2: Area to be closer to family, and I was wondering,
- 5:48Speaker 2: when are you coming out to San Francisco for a
- 5:51Speaker 2: visit and a run with fellow hurdler's Thanks bye.
- 5:54Speaker 1: H San Francisco. Can I tell you that I grew
- 5:57Speaker 1: up coming to San Francisco quite often and I had
- 6:00Speaker 1: family that lived in Walnut Creek, And since both of
- 6:03Speaker 1: my mother's parents passed away, it's been a little moment
- 6:07Speaker 1: since I have been back. I don't have it on
- 6:09Speaker 1: my radar at the moment. I only have one travel
- 6:12Speaker 1: plan for the rest of the year and it is
- 6:15Speaker 1: actually to Las Vegas in December. But I promise as
- 6:19Speaker 1: soon as I have more travel dates on the calendar
- 6:23Speaker 1: and that can get hurdlers involved, you will be the
- 6:27Speaker 1: first to know. I'm curious. I am looking for some
- 6:31Speaker 1: out of the box destinations for next year, maybe some
- 6:35Speaker 1: different local travel recommendations, and by local, I just mean domestic.
- 6:41Speaker 1: So if you have them, hit me up, tag me
- 6:43Speaker 1: over and STI I'm over at Emily Body. You know
- 6:45Speaker 1: that hurdle is over at Hurdle Podcast. If you're running
- 6:49Speaker 1: this weekend here in New York, City, good luck. If
- 6:52Speaker 1: I'm seeing you tomorrow at the Bandit pop up over
- 6:55Speaker 1: at Whalebone, I'm bleeker, I can't wait. And with that,
- 7:00Speaker 1: another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
