- 0:02Speaker 1: As the Christmas holiday period approached in the winter of
- 0:05Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, police and Broomfield, Colorado, were dispatched to
- 0:10Speaker 1: the home of a forty three year old mother who
- 0:12Speaker 1: had stopped responding to calls and messages from family.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hello, oh, I was just on their neighbor.
- 0:19Speaker 3: And they call you answer though, oh yeah, you sent
- 0:21Speaker 3: us as well.
- 0:22Speaker 1: So officers performing the welfare check made a gruesome discovery.
- 0:28Speaker 4: Shit ho shit.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Christilee Krue was a respected and capable professional, as well
- 0:39Speaker 1: as a dedicated and busy mother to three children. For months,
- 0:43Speaker 1: Christile had been enduring a living nightmare, a stalker sending
- 0:48Speaker 1: shocking and offensive messages and violent threats.
- 0:52Speaker 5: It's a lot and it has definitely made me like
- 0:55Speaker 5: parling everywhere and go.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Unfortunately, only in wake of her death were investigators finally
- 1:02Speaker 1: able to piece together the clues and reveal the truth
- 1:06Speaker 1: behind her stalker and her killer.
- 1:12Speaker 6: Heads on your face.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Hi there, I'm Kevin, and welcome to Just Thought Lounge.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Today's case has a lengthy history. It's a tragic case
- 1:24Speaker 1: with a horrific discovery, telling clues at the scene, and
- 1:28Speaker 1: ultimately the unraveling of an intricate, clever but brutal murder plot.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Let's take a look. Broomfield, Colorado, is located between the
- 1:54Speaker 1: two larger cities of Denver and Boulder. In the wealthier areas,
- 1:58Speaker 1: large family homes line the spacious residential streets. December fourteenth,
- 2:05Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, was a dreary Thursday. The Broomfield Police
- 2:10Speaker 1: Department received a call that morning to check in on
- 2:12Speaker 1: a home located on Promontory Loop. The caller told dispatch
- 2:16Speaker 1: that he had been unable to reach his wife for
- 2:18Speaker 1: several hours. She had been intending to meet with a
- 2:22Speaker 1: detective from the Broomfield PD that morning. He said. Her
- 2:25Speaker 1: last message to him was sent at eight fifty six am,
- 2:29Speaker 1: roughly twenty minutes after he left for work. She was
- 2:32Speaker 1: still at the house when he left.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Hi there, my name is Dan Krug. I don't think
- 2:40Speaker 2: this is an emergency, but this feels really weird. My
- 2:45Speaker 2: wife isn't responding to text messages or phone calls.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Okay?
- 2:52Speaker 7: When you talked to her about three hours ago.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Was she okay?
- 2:55Speaker 8: Was she.
- 2:57Speaker 9: Things that you can go on?
- 2:59Speaker 2: She asked me to pick up our daughter from school
- 3:02Speaker 2: because she had to meet with Martinez, so she.
- 3:07Speaker 9: Was nice to come into the PD and meet with Martinez.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what she said.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Officer O'Hare of the Broomfield Police went to the address
- 3:17Speaker 1: on Promontory Loop to check on Christie Krug's welfare. When
- 3:21Speaker 1: the officer approached the front door, he encountered a friend
- 3:24Speaker 1: and neighbor who had likewise been sent by a family
- 3:27Speaker 1: member to check in on Christilee.
- 3:34Speaker 9: Hello, I was just on their neighbor.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And oh yeah, he sent us as well, So next, okay,
- 3:45Speaker 3: all right, man, I appreciate it.
- 3:50Speaker 1: The sound of barking from Pixel, the family dog, was
- 3:53Speaker 1: the only noise from within the house. Receiving no response
- 4:07Speaker 1: at the door, the officer proceeded to the side of
- 4:09Speaker 1: the house to check if there was a vehicle parked
- 4:11Speaker 1: in the garage. Unable to see through the high windows,
- 4:17Speaker 1: O'Hare pulled his patrol car into the drive, stood on
- 4:20Speaker 1: the front bumper and peered in.
- 4:35Speaker 3: One fifty one send medical and one ten. I need
- 4:37Speaker 3: a fourth century. I got a female down in the garage.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Rotail police, roatail police.
- 4:58Speaker 10: Oh shit, mhm.
- 5:01Speaker 1: At the bottom of the steps on the floor of
- 5:03Speaker 1: the garage was the mother of three, Christilee Kruge. She
- 5:07Speaker 1: was bleeding from a wound to the head and unresponsive.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Thostman said there was a stalker.
- 5:19Speaker 10: Is there need a kidnapper?
- 5:20Speaker 11: So, I don't know.
- 5:26Speaker 3: No, she's unresponsive. Rabba, guys, I'm just want to look
- 5:38Speaker 3: at here, hey man, just run interference for me.
- 5:47Speaker 1: As additional officers responded to the scene, cleared the house
- 5:51Speaker 1: and blocked off the street, pieces of the story began
- 5:54Speaker 1: falling into place. At first, O'Hare thought that perhaps Christille
- 5:59Speaker 1: had been the victim of a horrible accident, a fall
- 6:02Speaker 1: down the stairs in which she hit her head.
- 6:06Speaker 11: Well, she's a CPR being done in the garage.
- 6:10Speaker 10: She's got a good head wound.
- 6:11Speaker 3: I think it's from falling down, but I'm going to
- 6:13Speaker 3: reevaluate that right now.
- 6:16Speaker 1: The officer didn't see any blunt instruments, anything that could
- 6:19Speaker 1: have been used as a weapon left at the scene.
- 6:22Speaker 1: After paramedics efforts to revive Cristilee failed, they found that
- 6:26Speaker 1: the forty three year old had not only suffered trauma
- 6:29Speaker 1: to her head, but also a single stab wound. It
- 6:34Speaker 1: was several inches in length, just above her heart. No
- 6:37Speaker 1: knife was spotted at the scene either.
- 6:40Speaker 3: All we saw initially which was the head trauma.
- 6:43Speaker 10: As soon as we cut open our shirt to place
- 6:45Speaker 10: the pads.
- 6:45Speaker 7: Is when we noticed the stab wound.
- 6:46Speaker 11: Got it okay for her.
- 6:49Speaker 1: There were no obvious signs of a struggle in the
- 6:52Speaker 1: form of defensive wounds on Cristilee or a disturbance in
- 6:56Speaker 1: the house. Aside from the violent scene in the garage,
- 6:59Speaker 1: the home appeared orderly. Christille's handgun, for which she had
- 7:04Speaker 1: a concealed carry permit, was located in her purse. She
- 7:08Speaker 1: had obviously not had an opportunity to retrieve it before
- 7:11Speaker 1: being incapacitated from the attack. The medical examiner would find
- 7:16Speaker 1: three distinct points of impact on the back of her head.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Bits and pieces of information began reaching the responding officers
- 7:27Speaker 1: explaining Christille's connection to Detective Martinez. At that time, they
- 7:32Speaker 1: knew only that Christille had reported a stalker, a man
- 7:35Speaker 1: she believed to be an ex boyfriend who had been
- 7:37Speaker 1: threatening her in text and emails since early October. The
- 7:41Speaker 1: case was being handled by Detective Martinez.
- 7:45Speaker 12: Yeah, I don't know the backstory.
- 7:47Speaker 11: Husband said there was a a dude who's been stalking
- 7:51Speaker 11: her and threatened to kidnap her or Martinez was involved,
- 7:56Speaker 11: and Martinez just said, Hey, this.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Is a I don't know.
- 7:59Speaker 3: I don't know the history on that part.
- 8:00Speaker 11: Owner Martinez does though, and he said he's coming in,
- 8:03Speaker 11: so I told him on you can see if Butler
- 8:07Speaker 11: needs photos with this big old house. Other than that,
- 8:09Speaker 11: we're just kind of scared in the scene and wait for.
- 8:11Speaker 6: The detctives, you know.
- 8:12Speaker 1: There were indications at the scene that the murder had
- 8:15Speaker 1: been thoughtfully executed. Four home security cameras, which captured most
- 8:20Speaker 1: of the exterior of the house, had been disabled. Three
- 8:23Speaker 1: of them had been taken offline that morning sometime around
- 8:26Speaker 1: eight fifteen am, coming back online just before police responded
- 8:31Speaker 1: to the house. The only camera that had remained active
- 8:34Speaker 1: throughout that time period was the garage door view. The
- 8:37Speaker 1: front door camera was also found to have a piece
- 8:40Speaker 1: of blue tape placed over its lens around the same
- 8:43Speaker 1: time as it and two others went offline. When the
- 8:47Speaker 1: cameras came back on, its view was entirely obscured. Then
- 8:52Speaker 1: there were questions about the point of entry. The garage
- 8:56Speaker 1: door could have been forced open, since Christilee was found
- 8:59Speaker 1: in the garage and had likely been taken by surprise,
- 9:02Speaker 1: this seemed like a logical deduction, though upon closer inspection
- 9:07Speaker 1: it seemed that Christie had been alone inside the home
- 9:11Speaker 1: with the door unlocked, or she unlocked the door for
- 9:15Speaker 1: her attacker.
- 9:17Speaker 3: I kicked that's interesting.
- 9:21Speaker 11: That is very interesting, almost like dude might stuck around
- 9:25Speaker 11: from this way, and.
- 9:28Speaker 6: I wonder if maybe the door was unlocked.
- 9:30Speaker 10: That's how we got in, you know, So I don't know.
- 9:37Speaker 11: I kicked it and it went pretty easy.
- 9:39Speaker 6: So I'm gonna take no, it wasn't.
- 9:44Speaker 13: Unlocked.
- 9:48Speaker 7: Yeah, you know what.
- 9:49Speaker 11: That bottom one does not even lock, so there's there's
- 9:52Speaker 11: no way to lock the bottom door.
- 9:54Speaker 3: It's all dead bolt right away. Saw her on the ground.
- 9:59Speaker 11: The looks mere on the wall. I can't run here.
- 10:02Speaker 3: And the garage door looked for weird. Let's look at it.
- 10:06Speaker 11: It looks not forced entry weird, but not proper alignment
- 10:10Speaker 11: weird either, see what I'm talking about.
- 10:13Speaker 3: It looks like maybe it's just I don't know, dude,
- 10:18Speaker 3: just when you were in the house when he did
- 10:19Speaker 3: he swept.
- 10:20Speaker 11: The house, Yeah, we did, and I didn't see anything
- 10:24Speaker 11: like disturbance wise or anything of the house. Outside of
- 10:26Speaker 11: the garage is her car keys, and looked like she
- 10:29Speaker 11: would just leave it unless she maybe got rised at
- 10:33Speaker 11: the front door.
- 10:33Speaker 3: And ran that way.
- 10:35Speaker 10: I don't know, but her car keys were at her
- 10:38Speaker 10: side or a set anything else on the inside?
- 10:42Speaker 3: No, nothing of note.
- 10:44Speaker 1: As detectives took stock of the evidence, Daniel Krug, who
- 10:48Speaker 1: had initially called for the welfare check on his wife,
- 10:51Speaker 1: arrived unseen.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Stay back, stay back, stay back, stay back.
- 10:57Speaker 11: Uh to get his phone away from him because he's
- 11:02Speaker 11: probably access to this camera and I obviously don't want
- 11:04Speaker 11: him how to look at it.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Other family members had also arrived at the house. Christelle's mother, Linda,
- 11:12Speaker 1: who had been contacted by Dan directly, arrived shortly after
- 11:16Speaker 1: Officer O'Hare. She was joined by her son and daughter
- 11:19Speaker 1: in law, as well as the friend and neighbor who
- 11:21Speaker 1: was at the house when the officer arrived. As the
- 11:24Speaker 1: family grieved in the street, Dan gave police permission to
- 11:27Speaker 1: begin searching the house.
- 11:30Speaker 6: I know it seems like a wrong time, but it's
- 11:33Speaker 6: no time like man really like except such residence that
- 11:36Speaker 6: you can be investige with a benefax.
- 11:39Speaker 7: Yes, go go cold, you understand your masculine.
- 11:42Speaker 3: No, but go.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Inside the house, investigators found the meticulously documented evidence Christie
- 11:54Speaker 1: had compiled on her stalker. The forty three year old
- 11:58Speaker 1: worked as a project manager at a large technology company
- 12:01Speaker 1: based out of Boulder. Christile had always distinguished herself intellectually,
- 12:06Speaker 1: having earned a bachelor's degree in biochemical engineering and moving
- 12:10Speaker 1: on to an accomplished career in the tech sector. Beginning
- 12:13Speaker 1: in early October, when she began receiving unwanted text messages
- 12:17Speaker 1: in emails from an old college boyfriend, her instinct was
- 12:21Speaker 1: to record and document everything. Her diary contained entries detailing
- 12:26Speaker 1: each communication, the different phone numbers used by her stocker,
- 12:30Speaker 1: various email addresses, and other details. She also took steps
- 12:34Speaker 1: to protect herself. She purchased a gun, took training classes,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and began to carry her weapon with her whenever she
- 12:42Speaker 1: left the house. Investigators found a gun safe in the
- 12:49Speaker 1: corner of the basement. There was a twenty two caliber rifle,
- 12:53Speaker 1: three swords, and a handgun lock box. After the threats started,
- 12:58Speaker 1: Christile had three more care installed around the exterior of
- 13:02Speaker 1: the house, in addition to the existing doorbell, camera, and
- 13:05Speaker 1: lights added to illuminate the property. She established a buddy system.
- 13:10Speaker 1: When she went out to run Errand's, she shared her
- 13:13Speaker 1: phone location with family members. She also spoke with neighbors
- 13:17Speaker 1: explaining her situation and what to keep an eye out for.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Throughout the month, the messages escalated into overt threats against
- 13:25Speaker 1: herself and her husband. On Halloween, she received an email
- 13:30Speaker 1: which contained a photo of Dan appearing to be outside
- 13:33Speaker 1: of his workplace at the Colorado Department of Public Health,
- 13:36Speaker 1: where he held a role in finance. Along with the
- 13:39Speaker 1: photo was a note this year husband, he needs to
- 13:43Speaker 1: drive safe. Don't want a clear rubber hose in his tailpipe?
- 13:50Speaker 9: Yes, hi, there, I need to record threatening emails and
- 13:54Speaker 9: boone calls from a stocking ex and just didn't know
- 13:59Speaker 9: what you go propriate course?
- 14:00Speaker 4: Here?
- 14:01Speaker 14: Do you live at room Field?
- 14:02Speaker 9: I live in Broomfield. I have no idea where he is.
- 14:05Speaker 14: That's okay.
- 14:06Speaker 13: What's your address?
- 14:08Speaker 9: Is there a training order in place.
- 14:09Speaker 14: Between you two?
- 14:11Speaker 9: There's not that. I would definitely be curious for getting one,
- 14:13Speaker 9: consideringtons with violence against both me and my family.
- 14:17Speaker 14: Okay, And it's a text fastice phone call.
- 14:21Speaker 9: I have text messages and an email today that had
- 14:25Speaker 9: a picture of my husband threatening to put something in
- 14:28Speaker 9: his tail pipe.
- 14:29Speaker 1: After a message was left indicating that her stalker had
- 14:33Speaker 1: deposited a bodily fluid on her car while she was
- 14:36Speaker 1: seeing her dentist, Christilee had a Broomfield officer come to
- 14:39Speaker 1: the house.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Marcino, so I kind of an idea, what's going on?
- 14:47Speaker 13: Yes, I fall.
- 14:48Speaker 9: I did not see a marketing on the.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Dirt.
- 15:03Speaker 10: You know this is right that if somebody goes through
- 15:05Speaker 10: something weird like this, it's usually obviously I guess.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Yeah, sometimes yes.
- 15:16Speaker 1: In that instance, neither Christille nor the officer saw any
- 15:20Speaker 1: sign that the stalker had done what he had claimed
- 15:23Speaker 1: to her car. Nonetheless, this incident was reported along with
- 15:28Speaker 1: the others. When she sat down with Detective Martinez, Christilee
- 15:37Speaker 1: explained that her stalker called himself Anthony, an ex college
- 15:41Speaker 1: boyfriend whom she had not seen in person in over
- 15:44Speaker 1: twenty years.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Okay, we dated its summer of ninety nine very briefly,
- 15:54Speaker 5: like there was a break up somewhere here, like in the.
- 15:56Speaker 6: Pulse, I did this kind of like somebody way rare.
- 16:00Speaker 5: Last contact I ever had with him when he tried
- 16:02Speaker 5: to reach out to me personally, saw him in person,
- 16:05Speaker 5: would have been like in the spring.
- 16:06Speaker 6: Of two thousand and one.
- 16:07Speaker 5: Everything here the same question marks because I'm like about
- 16:11Speaker 5: I'm just trying to remember, like where I was living
- 16:14Speaker 5: and where.
- 16:15Speaker 6: I had kids at the time, so I put everything in.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Green where they're like just like little teeny things.
- 16:20Speaker 6: It's like, Okay, how are you doing?
- 16:22Speaker 5: Found me on old information, so it's public information. Technically
- 16:26Speaker 5: I can't say that, like he found me in a
- 16:28Speaker 5: special way.
- 16:29Speaker 6: But it was years later, right that.
- 16:31Speaker 5: He came back with a quick email trying to check in.
- 16:33Speaker 5: And these events here last maybe like within a period
- 16:37Speaker 5: a couple of weeks.
- 16:38Speaker 6: Usually it's a handful of email messages.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Usually it's just like light easy, like what's going on, yeah,
- 16:45Speaker 5: like trying to like yeah, just kind of start a conversation,
- 16:48Speaker 5: but it's all light, cordial whatever.
- 16:50Speaker 6: He says, let's get together. I'm like, no, here he says,
- 16:55Speaker 6: let's get together.
- 16:56Speaker 5: I'm like, I have a I have a serious boyfriend,
- 16:58Speaker 5: like we were living together at this time, and he's like,
- 17:01Speaker 5: screw your boyfriend. And then yeah, I'm here in two
- 17:03Speaker 5: thousand and seven, he's.
- 17:04Speaker 6: Reaching out to me. You can see I have a kid.
- 17:06Speaker 6: This is my profile picture of my kid.
- 17:09Speaker 5: I'm like, I have a family now, and then again
- 17:12Speaker 5: where I'm like, I'm married with children all over here.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Throughout the years, Anthony would reach out to inquire whether
- 17:20Speaker 1: Christille was interested in meeting with him, she always refused.
- 17:25Speaker 1: In two thousand and seven, after meeting years before online,
- 17:28Speaker 1: she married Dan. They went on to have three children.
- 17:32Speaker 1: At the time of her death, they were aged fourteen, eleven,
- 17:35Speaker 1: and eight. Christille told detective Martinez that the only good
- 17:39Speaker 1: thing about her circumstance was that her stalker appeared completely
- 17:43Speaker 1: disinterested in her children. In all of his unhinged messages
- 17:47Speaker 1: to her, he had never once mentioned them. Before the
- 17:54Speaker 1: stalking began, there had been some concern that someone had
- 17:57Speaker 1: tried to gain entry to the krug family home through
- 18:01Speaker 1: their garage. In September of that year, Dan returned home
- 18:05Speaker 1: to find an unknown individual running from the property.
- 18:09Speaker 5: I don't think it's related, but there was my husband
- 18:12Speaker 5: caught somebody going through a garage that he came home
- 18:15Speaker 5: and rush shore sou that he caught.
- 18:16Speaker 6: Somebody running out of a garage.
- 18:18Speaker 5: We subsequently installed two more cameras on our property so
- 18:22Speaker 5: I get notifications of anybody that's like walking and driving.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Yes, hi there, my name is Dan Kruge. I am
- 18:34Speaker 4: a little late, but I'm reporting a tres passer on
- 18:37Speaker 4: my property.
- 18:38Speaker 2: What happened about four fifty or so I was returning
- 18:45Speaker 2: home from the store. My garage door was open. As
- 18:48Speaker 2: I approached it. Someone ran out and ran through my
- 18:54Speaker 2: backyard and got away. So that's that's really all I have.
- 19:00Speaker 13: To go on.
- 19:01Speaker 9: Have you noticed if anything with missing?
- 19:05Speaker 2: Uh, the only thing I think is missing was a
- 19:07Speaker 2: spare house key. Do you think that that's person possibly ticket?
- 19:13Speaker 2: That's the best guest of my wife Maya.
- 19:17Speaker 1: In November, Dan also sat down with the detective after
- 19:20Speaker 1: his wife had received the email on Halloween threatening him directly.
- 19:25Speaker 1: She filled him in on the situation. By the time
- 19:28Speaker 1: of her death, they had both been emotionally traumatized from
- 19:32Speaker 1: weeks of threats and uncertainty.
- 19:35Speaker 8: Largely, I've been focused on her and the kids, and
- 19:40Speaker 8: I've been.
- 19:40Speaker 6: Hold up the house.
- 19:41Speaker 7: Yeah, how's the grocery store?
- 19:48Speaker 6: Briefly on Tuesday and someone behind me dropped can paddicked?
- 20:02Speaker 6: Am I doing? I'm petick?
- 20:06Speaker 7: How I'm doing a ship protecting my life, And.
- 20:20Speaker 5: I keep trying to remind myself this is intending to
- 20:22Speaker 5: be terrorizing, This is intending to scare.
- 20:24Speaker 6: Me, so I can.
- 20:27Speaker 7: Intension to make your life viserable and cause disruption, some
- 20:32Speaker 7: sort of emotional turmoil exactly what he's going for.
- 20:41Speaker 1: The couple's emotional turmoil and fears over the stocking seemed
- 20:45Speaker 1: to culminate in the worst possible outcome. Only weeks later,
- 20:49Speaker 1: in December this, Dan was escorted to the police station
- 21:06Speaker 1: by a victim's advocate and placed in a soft room
- 21:09Speaker 1: for questioning.
- 21:29Speaker 13: Answer.
- 21:30Speaker 1: While he consoled Dan, Detective Martinez awaited the results of
- 21:34Speaker 1: expedited search warrants on the stalkers data. This included the
- 21:39Speaker 1: origins of the email addresses and phone numbers used to
- 21:42Speaker 1: communicate with Christelle, information that could prove the stalker's identity
- 21:47Speaker 1: and hopefully locate him. Although the information had already been
- 21:51Speaker 1: requested weeks earlier, it took the unfortunate event of Christille's
- 21:55Speaker 1: murder to force a rapid response to these warrants. In addition,
- 22:00Speaker 1: detectives were busy searching through Christille's cell phone and items
- 22:04Speaker 1: from inside the house. Dan helpfully ran through the home
- 22:07Speaker 1: security system with the detectives. Cameras captured Christilee leaving to
- 22:12Speaker 1: drop off the children before eight am that morning, then
- 22:15Speaker 1: returning and backing her car into the garage at seven
- 22:19Speaker 1: fifty seven. The front side and back door cameras were
- 22:23Speaker 1: disabled at eight fifteen. In Christille's phone, investigators located two
- 22:28Speaker 1: unsent text messages. The first from eight nineteen. It was
- 22:32Speaker 1: intended for Detective Martinez and read, I can't do this anymore.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I confess I've had an affair for eighteen months. We
- 22:42Speaker 1: framed Anthony and pushed it on Dan. I just broke
- 22:45Speaker 1: up with my boyfriend and were coming to the station
- 22:48Speaker 1: to give statements. Be there in thirty minutes. The second message,
- 22:54Speaker 1: also not sent, was for Christille's brother Lars. I can't
- 22:59Speaker 1: keep up the lies. I had an affair for eighteen months.
- 23:02Speaker 1: We framed Anthony. I just confessed to Martinez my now
- 23:07Speaker 1: ex boyfriend, and I are going there now, pushed Dan
- 23:11Speaker 1: to not press charges. Ostensibly unaware of these unsent texts,
- 23:17Speaker 1: Dan told Martinez that he suspected Christilee was not being
- 23:21Speaker 1: truthful with him. She had withheld the information about her
- 23:24Speaker 1: stalker from him for nearly a month. When she finally
- 23:28Speaker 1: told him, He nicknamed him the kickman because in part
- 23:32Speaker 1: he wanted to kick him out of their lives.
- 23:37Speaker 6: She was cheap and seekers.
- 23:40Speaker 7: All tell us your as hours early coming home. Ass
- 24:00Speaker 7: Yes que, she truly.
- 24:05Speaker 6: Too, I asked, she.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Said, while detectives continued to speak delicately with Dan Krug.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Information from the scene and their warrants was pouring in.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Along with the many notes that Christile had written about
- 24:26Speaker 1: her stalker were ones revealing the state of her marriage.
- 24:30Speaker 1: She wrote that she wanted a divorce, she did not
- 24:33Speaker 1: trust her husband with the children, and she no longer
- 24:36Speaker 1: loved him. However, there was nothing in her handwriting suggesting
- 24:41Speaker 1: that she was having an affair. One minute after the
- 24:45Speaker 1: text was typed out for her brother confessing to one,
- 24:48Speaker 1: Christile's phone was powered off. The only camera that remained
- 24:52Speaker 1: online showed Dan leaving for work two minutes later at
- 24:56Speaker 1: eight twenty four. The last communication sent from christ Steele's
- 25:00Speaker 1: phone was much later, at eight fifty six. That was
- 25:04Speaker 1: the message to Dan asking him to collect their daughter.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Later that day, When detectives returned to the room to
- 25:14Speaker 1: speak with Dan further, they read him his Miranda rights.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Dan joked that since his brother married a prosecutor, her
- 25:21Speaker 1: voice was in his head telling him to ask for
- 25:24Speaker 1: a lawyer.
- 25:25Speaker 12: He didn't typical call fish and he married a prosecutor,
- 25:31Speaker 12: So I had Lid's voice in my head going get
- 25:35Speaker 12: a fucking wire.
- 25:42Speaker 6: I don't want I don't want you.
- 25:47Speaker 1: The detectives began by asking Dan to detail the trouble
- 25:50Speaker 1: in his marriage. They were keen to understand whether the
- 25:53Speaker 1: concern created by Christielee Stalker had caused the couple to
- 25:57Speaker 1: grow closer.
- 25:59Speaker 6: You guys close or not.
- 26:00Speaker 15: Maybe emotionally closer, but you guys are physically sort of
- 26:04Speaker 15: working on things besides.
- 26:07Speaker 6: Your kids. There was a mutual yeah, there was.
- 26:15Speaker 8: Over the course of November, there was a a better
- 26:21Speaker 8: team feel.
- 26:24Speaker 7: Okay, they respond to crisis.
- 26:30Speaker 8: I had her as a partner to protect the family,
- 26:38Speaker 8: but it didn't feel like a partner who.
- 26:47Speaker 15: Value I mean, it felt like it sounds like you fit.
- 26:51Speaker 6: You feel like you were completely I.
- 26:54Speaker 15: Don't know, written off by her or that you she
- 26:57Speaker 15: has zero care for you anymore.
- 27:01Speaker 8: I mean.
- 27:06Speaker 6: I loved her for years.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Dan was asked to walk the detectives through what he
- 27:14Speaker 1: thought could have occurred that morning I left.
- 27:19Speaker 8: She was in the kitchen, she would have had whatever meeting,
- 27:23Speaker 8: says she had, and then she.
- 27:25Speaker 6: Says she was meeting with you. But you know nothing
- 27:28Speaker 6: about that. So I've known you.
- 27:29Speaker 2: What I tell you?
- 27:31Speaker 6: What the fuck that is? What's his name? The other detective.
- 27:38Speaker 8: Uh said that the cameras were turned off.
- 27:47Speaker 6: That shouldn't happen. The only way that the cameras we
- 27:54Speaker 6: turned off is through the app one of us.
- 27:59Speaker 7: Has it hit the bottom.
- 28:05Speaker 6: Someone came to the door. She doesn't usually answer the door,
- 28:15Speaker 6: but she must have, because she must have so in Libran,
- 28:24Speaker 6: the story that I have is someone came to the door,
- 28:27Speaker 6: and maybe she went outside.
- 28:30Speaker 7: To get a package, and they must have come in.
- 28:39Speaker 7: You think either she was taken off guard or or
- 28:42Speaker 7: somebody familiar to her. I don't know who, how familiar
- 28:49Speaker 7: would have been she had who had been taken off guard.
- 28:57Speaker 1: While Dan sat with the detectives offering the of the murder,
- 29:01Speaker 1: he was unaware that Martinez had managed to track down
- 29:04Speaker 1: Christile's alleged stalker weeks before the detective needed the search
- 29:09Speaker 1: warrants to come through, linking the threatening messages to Anthony
- 29:13Speaker 1: or to someone else. That afternoon, officers in Anthony's home
- 29:18Speaker 1: state of Utah paid him a visit at his home,
- 29:20Speaker 1: which was more than a six hour drive to Broomfield.
- 29:24Speaker 1: They confirmed he had been at work until nine forty
- 29:27Speaker 1: five the night before the next day, when Christilee was killed,
- 29:32Speaker 1: he was shopping with his wife until one point thirty.
- 29:35Speaker 1: His alibi was confirmed by witnesses, store cameras, and license
- 29:39Speaker 1: plate readers. There was no way that Anthony, the man
- 29:43Speaker 1: Dan called Kickman, committed the murder.
- 29:50Speaker 12: We had already.
- 29:50Speaker 7: Spoken with Anthony commission a way that used town today.
- 30:00Speaker 14: Have you fucking.
- 30:05Speaker 6: Terrified to bring the ship?
- 30:10Speaker 1: Data from the search warrants confirmed what the detective had suspected.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Multiple emails sent to Christie had originated from an IP
- 30:18Speaker 1: address registered to the Colorado General Government in Greenwood Village,
- 30:23Speaker 1: Dan Krug's workplace.
- 30:27Speaker 15: The Gmail account that.
- 30:31Speaker 7: And you can see more specifically in the text now
- 30:34Speaker 7: number we were talking about the number that he initially
- 30:36Speaker 7: tested Christie from.
- 30:40Speaker 6: The Gmail account, the kick Command account that.
- 30:42Speaker 7: You guys initially received with the photo of you in it,
- 30:46Speaker 7: and the phone number. Those originated through their IP addresses
- 30:52Speaker 7: at your office.
- 30:56Speaker 6: As far as we know right now, there's no physical
- 30:58Speaker 6: waited that King Man could have been involved in this
- 31:02Speaker 6: case on where he's at right now.
- 31:06Speaker 15: So you know, the mystery continues, and.
- 31:12Speaker 7: Things are certainly pointing in one direction right now.
- 31:19Speaker 6: All the time, you've been looking through him because the protection.
- 31:24Speaker 7: And he just felt him definitely, So I've been looking
- 31:31Speaker 7: at you, but I've been waiting for these records to
- 31:35Speaker 7: come back.
- 31:37Speaker 1: As the interview progressed, Dan became increasingly quiet and still.
- 31:42Speaker 1: He spoke slower, claiming to be in a state of
- 31:45Speaker 1: emotional and physical exhaustion from the day's events. Instead of
- 31:49Speaker 1: offering a fiery defense of his innocence, he seemed to
- 31:52Speaker 1: struggle to summon the energy to respond to the detective's
- 31:55Speaker 1: assertions at all. They posited that Dan was the alleged
- 32:00Speaker 1: stalker that he had hoped the fabricated threat to his
- 32:03Speaker 1: wife would cause her to run to him for safety
- 32:06Speaker 1: and protection, drawing them closer together. Instead, she kept it
- 32:12Speaker 1: from him for nearly a month. She took steps to
- 32:15Speaker 1: protect herself, enrolled in self defense classes, purchased and trained
- 32:19Speaker 1: with her handgun, maintained a meticulous stalker log and communication
- 32:23Speaker 1: with police, and she coordinated with trusted family members and friends.
- 32:30Speaker 7: You don't get the response and the openness you once
- 32:33Speaker 7: did for about twenty eight days from October second to
- 32:38Speaker 7: October thirty first, So you.
- 32:42Speaker 6: Ammed it up a little bit. Send a photo of
- 32:45Speaker 6: yourself to.
- 32:47Speaker 7: An account you created.
- 32:50Speaker 6: See whatever response is. I agree that conclusion that a
- 32:55Speaker 6: lot of this stocking stuff in this report.
- 32:57Speaker 15: That you guys that of this kick came in has
- 33:00Speaker 15: brought you closer and maybe given a little bit of
- 33:04Speaker 15: hope in your relationship that you can accomplish something together.
- 33:14Speaker 16: I don't know where you're going, what happens you're using this,
- 33:20Speaker 16: I'm sure kind of using this circumstance to bring you
- 33:23Speaker 16: guys closer together.
- 33:25Speaker 7: You yourself said that having the common goal of circling the
- 33:31Speaker 7: labs and something along the lines that it felt like we.
- 33:34Speaker 6: Had more team one, right.
- 33:36Speaker 8: I think there's a big, big gap between teamwork and.
- 33:46Speaker 6: Rekindlings.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Dan spent roughly four hours at the police station that
- 33:53Speaker 1: day before declaring that he was finished with questioning.
- 34:01Speaker 7: My thoughts, the blessing that we're going to do before
- 34:09Speaker 7: before we get to that point, as we need to
- 34:10Speaker 7: process you before.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Forensic experts processing Dan's clothing found no blood residue. Similarly,
- 34:18Speaker 1: teams sent to search the vehicle he had driven to
- 34:21Speaker 1: work that day returned to nothing of evidentiary value. They
- 34:24Speaker 1: had been unable to isolate a cleanup at the scene
- 34:28Speaker 1: or definitively point to a murder weapon. If Dan Krug
- 34:32Speaker 1: was the killer, it was likely to be digital evidence
- 34:36Speaker 1: not physical, that would prove his guilt. As Dan awaited
- 34:43Speaker 1: a ride from the station following his questioning, he pled
- 34:46Speaker 1: with Martinez to find the man who murdered his wife
- 34:51Speaker 1: as as.
- 34:54Speaker 6: As your father, not as.
- 35:03Speaker 12: Poison family, almost respect. I don't care if you capture
- 35:12Speaker 12: I just love the flickery.
- 35:13Speaker 6: May he took my children's mother.
- 35:20Speaker 1: For Christmas?
- 35:29Speaker 6: Fire ass don't just assume as me. Keep looking.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Over the following two days, the crime scene was thoroughly processed,
- 35:49Speaker 1: so too was Christille's car, as well as Dan's office
- 35:52Speaker 1: at the state government building. Further digital evidence was compiled
- 35:56Speaker 1: from Dan's laptop and cell phone. Those closest to Steel
- 36:00Speaker 1: reached out with their own theories, including her mother, Linda.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Linda expressed concern that in the chaos and distress on
- 36:08Speaker 1: the day of the murder, she had neglected to convey
- 36:10Speaker 1: key facts to investigators, primarily about her daughter's husband.
- 36:16Speaker 13: Just tell me what's on your mind. Okay, so you know,
- 36:22Speaker 13: setting aside because we all know, well, we all know
- 36:26Speaker 13: that Dan's under suspicion. So just setting aside the culprit.
- 36:34Speaker 13: My daughter was going to get divorced from Dan, Okay,
- 36:37Speaker 13: she couldn't, She couldn't stand him. He was just he
- 36:41Speaker 13: was just he was too volatile with the kids. And
- 36:44Speaker 13: she told me that she was going to just live
- 36:46Speaker 13: in the basement because she couldn't she couldn't get enough
- 36:50Speaker 13: proof that Dan was being volatile to the kids. And
- 36:54Speaker 13: so I don't know if I said, did I say that,
- 36:56Speaker 13: or did somebody said that.
- 36:57Speaker 9: I don't know you did.
- 36:58Speaker 13: I mean, I just I'm just nervous about this and
- 37:04Speaker 13: just some of the conversations that we're having.
- 37:06Speaker 14: With him, you know, wanting to get rid of all
- 37:08Speaker 14: our stuff.
- 37:08Speaker 15: And I can see a little bit more insight on
- 37:10Speaker 15: that with what kind of conversations have you had with
- 37:13Speaker 15: Dan's following on Thursday.
- 37:15Speaker 13: Well, just just the one that was really troubling me
- 37:19Speaker 13: was just the fact that he, you know, was talking
- 37:22Speaker 13: about getting rid of he wants to sell the house.
- 37:25Speaker 9: And I understand it.
- 37:26Speaker 13: Here's the thing, everything he says could be justified away, right,
- 37:31Speaker 13: And now I know was my daughter's frustration, because Dan
- 37:34Speaker 13: can be pretty manipulent, that's just his kind of character.
- 37:40Speaker 13: But what really struck me is that he was talking
- 37:42Speaker 13: about throwing her things out, you know, and I can
- 37:46Speaker 13: get rid of her, you know, he actually said, I
- 37:49Speaker 13: get rid of her bras and underwear and you know,
- 37:52Speaker 13: grip t shirts and whatever.
- 37:54Speaker 14: And you know, we can put the dresses and shoes
- 37:56Speaker 14: that the kids.
- 37:56Speaker 13: Love down away and zipper them away. And you know,
- 37:59Speaker 13: this maybe just Dan's way. He's quirky and weird. I'm
- 38:04Speaker 13: dealing with it, but it just did not sat right
- 38:07Speaker 13: with me at all.
- 38:08Speaker 1: Linda questioned why Dan had chosen to call her directly
- 38:11Speaker 1: that morning to check on Christilee. He had never done
- 38:14Speaker 1: so previously, always preferring to contact Christille's brother or his
- 38:19Speaker 1: sister in law if he needed to reach out to family.
- 38:22Speaker 1: She told the detective that she did not wish to
- 38:24Speaker 1: falsely accuse Dan, but that she believed he had a
- 38:28Speaker 1: motive when he was speaking with her.
- 38:31Speaker 14: I know what you mean by that, Well, he tries
- 38:34Speaker 14: to make you feel that he's the victim and that
- 38:39Speaker 14: you're wrong, and you know, there's just there almost some time,
- 38:43Speaker 14: he get really syrup.
- 38:45Speaker 13: He's sweet, but you can see and feel underneath this
- 38:49Speaker 13: kind of menacing type attitude. Okay, so it's just it
- 38:55Speaker 13: doesn't feel good right. You can tell he's seeding with anger,
- 38:58Speaker 13: you know, and the dogs next would always barket him.
- 39:01Speaker 13: We should always tell when Dan was about to blow.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Just be excel his parking like.
- 39:05Speaker 6: Crazy Adam.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Linda's intuition proved correct. Detectives were able to trace the
- 39:13Speaker 1: phone numbers used by Christille Stalker to Burner phones purchased
- 39:17Speaker 1: with gift cards. These store purchases were then linked to
- 39:21Speaker 1: Dan through location tracking on his personal cell phone. His
- 39:24Speaker 1: phone also revealed a curious search history from around nine
- 39:28Speaker 1: pm on the night before his wife was killed. At
- 39:32Speaker 1: eight fifty five, Dan searched how hard would you have
- 39:35Speaker 1: to hit someone on the head to make them unconscious?
- 39:38Speaker 1: How durable is the human head to withstand trauma? Two
- 39:43Speaker 1: minutes later, he searched how hard a hit for head
- 39:45Speaker 1: trauma to go unconscious? But that was not all. The
- 39:50Speaker 1: final text message sent from Christille's cell phone was timestamped
- 39:54Speaker 1: at eight fifty six am, over twenty minutes after Dan
- 39:58Speaker 1: was captured by the only working Ston security camera leaving
- 40:01Speaker 1: for work. Data analysis showed that Christilee's phone was powered
- 40:06Speaker 1: off and inactive at the time that message was sent.
- 40:10Speaker 1: This meant that she could not have typed and sent
- 40:13Speaker 1: it after her husband left for work. It had been
- 40:16Speaker 1: scheduled by someone much earlier to send to Dan's device
- 40:21Speaker 1: after he had left the house. Broomfield police collected hundreds
- 40:33Speaker 1: of hours of home security footage from neighboring homes covering
- 40:36Speaker 1: the early morning hours to afternoon period on the day
- 40:39Speaker 1: of the murder. They noted every vehicle that passed near
- 40:42Speaker 1: to the house on Promontory Loop. They looked at every
- 40:45Speaker 1: individual on the street. Though the killer had disabled the
- 40:49Speaker 1: cameras at the Crew House, it would have been nearly
- 40:52Speaker 1: impossible to avoid being captured by any of the dozens
- 40:55Speaker 1: of other cameras that covered the surrounding area. No one
- 40:59Speaker 1: was captured approaching the house that morning. The killer must
- 41:03Speaker 1: have already been inside. On December sixteenth, two days after
- 41:12Speaker 1: the murder, Dan Krug was surrounded by law enforcement in
- 41:16Speaker 1: the parking lot of the King Supers in Broomfield.
- 41:21Speaker 3: Heads on your face, Your heads on your face.
- 41:32Speaker 1: From Dan's pocket, police pulled a handwritten note. It was
- 41:35Speaker 1: addressed to his mother. He wrote of being lied to
- 41:39Speaker 1: and used. He stated that his conscience was clear. He
- 41:43Speaker 1: declared his innocence.
- 41:45Speaker 6: You need to tell your kids that you killed their mother,
- 41:48Speaker 6: or do you want somebody else to? Okay?
- 41:54Speaker 14: Sure, looks.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Dan refused to speak with police. After his arrest, he
- 42:05Speaker 1: was charged with first degree murder and pleaded not guilty.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Daniel Krug went to trial in April twenty twenty five.
- 42:16Speaker 1: His defense argued that there was no physical evidence linking
- 42:19Speaker 1: Dan to the crime, the case was circumstantial, and in
- 42:23Speaker 1: their opinion week the state pointed to Dan's motive, the
- 42:27Speaker 1: digital evidence linking him to the stocking, the disabled security cameras,
- 42:32Speaker 1: and the cleverly scheduled text message from Christille's phone that
- 42:36Speaker 1: had been intended to be his alibi.
- 42:38Speaker 17: We know the physical evidence, and there is an enormous
- 42:43Speaker 17: disconnect between that and the circumstantial picture. The prosecution wants
- 42:49Speaker 17: you to believe. Mister Krug did not kill his wife.
- 42:55Speaker 17: He did not commit these crimes.
- 42:58Speaker 18: This was about Dan losing control. He was not in
- 43:01Speaker 18: love with Christille, and that resentment had turned to rage
- 43:05Speaker 18: by the time we get to December fourteenth. Think about
- 43:08Speaker 18: what he did to her. You don't do that to
- 43:10Speaker 18: somebody you love. Think about the absolute nightmare and hell
- 43:14Speaker 18: that he made the last few months of her life.
- 43:20Speaker 1: The jury deliberated for roughly one full day before finding
- 43:24Speaker 1: Dan guilty of first degree murder two counts of stalking
- 43:28Speaker 1: and criminal impersonation. He was sentenced to life in prison
- 43:33Speaker 1: without the possibility of parole.
- 43:40Speaker 10: She just had a sense of beauty and style that
- 43:44Speaker 10: it was so enjoyable to watch As a mom. She
- 43:49Speaker 10: got her kids involved in so many things. She was
- 43:51Speaker 10: always running them all over the place with complete dedication
- 43:54Speaker 10: to make sure that they involved in the things that
- 43:56Speaker 10: made them happy. So she is. She juggled a lot
- 44:00Speaker 10: of balls and pulled it off amazingly. There's no matter
- 44:04Speaker 10: justin I can bring her back. But it is a
- 44:08Speaker 10: relief to know that the person who thought he was
- 44:12Speaker 10: going to get away with it, with this convoluted alibi
- 44:16Speaker 10: picture and trying to blame it on somebody else, that that.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Didn't happen, and that was the tragic case of Christie Krug.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Thank you for joining me, and a special thanks this
- 44:31Speaker 1: week to Sylvia Line, Shana Hobson, and Travis Young for
- 44:36Speaker 1: joining our Sherlock Holmes membership. Welcome to the JTL members Lounge.
- 44:41Speaker 1: I'm Kevin. This is just thought lounge and I'll see
- 44:44Speaker 1: in the next one.
- 44:47Speaker 19: Get deep, but these stories can't. Hi, let me find
- 44:49Speaker 19: my seat, Kevin, go ahead to settle live. Gotta be
- 44:52Speaker 19: selective an owner research. Keeping it objective always been effective
- 44:56Speaker 19: to say he got a neck, pick it a litter.
- 44:58Speaker 10: You see how Newton got his back.
- 44:59Speaker 19: Yeah, at the content that you need to be a
- 45:02Speaker 19: new sign, talking in the comments that you're in the
- 45:04Speaker 19: few lines tun in it had like love that. It's
- 45:07Speaker 19: feels like the whole world is watch the world
