- 0:48Speaker 1: at camp. They report on the twenty eighth, they'll be
- 0:50Speaker 1: back on the field on the twenty ninth. And what
- 0:53Speaker 1: will it take for the Eagles to make a Super
- 0:56Speaker 1: Bowl run when they start things. That is what we'll
- 0:59Speaker 1: discuss today and it was the theme of the Inside
- 1:02Speaker 1: of the Birds podcast this week, as Adam Kaplan. George
- 1:05Speaker 1: is Adam, what's up man?
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike exactly. So our Monday and Tuesday shows we're
- 1:10Speaker 3: really that discussion because we've we've broken down pretty much everything,
- 1:15Speaker 3: not everything, but a lot that you could look into
- 1:17Speaker 3: with the roster and depth charts and coaching and so forth. So,
- 1:21Speaker 3: all right, what's going to take for them to make
- 1:23Speaker 3: another Super Bowl run? Well, we did offense on Monday,
- 1:26Speaker 3: we did defense on Tuesday this morning, and I want
- 1:29Speaker 3: to give you a couple of snippets and we'll start
- 1:31Speaker 3: on offense, Mike, So you know, the Hurts ones easy.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Everybody knows that he's got to throw in time. I
- 1:37Speaker 3: told you back in February. It's going to be a
- 1:39Speaker 3: timing based offense. That's what's going to happen. But what
- 1:41Speaker 3: I would also add to this discussion is it's not
- 1:45Speaker 3: just Jalen Hurts, it's the coaching's got to be better.
- 1:47Speaker 3: They've got to be able to reach him. They've got
- 1:49Speaker 3: to get him on the same page. And if it's
- 1:52Speaker 3: not working, well, keep drilling it, keep coaching him and
- 1:55Speaker 3: get him to eventually do it. I mean, that's coaching.
- 1:58Speaker 3: It's and the head coach who doesn't coach position. He's
- 2:01Speaker 3: got to do a better coaching this time around. He
- 2:03Speaker 3: did not do a great job last year. That's kind
- 2:05Speaker 3: of why they didn't go deep in the playoffs last season.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Well, obviously hurts. He's the quarterback. He's at the top
- 2:10Speaker 1: of all discussions, and we have such an unknown with
- 2:14Speaker 1: him because of what this offense might be. But one
- 2:16Speaker 1: thing that was the biggest problem they had last year
- 2:19Speaker 1: and has been the biggest reason they'd had success during
- 2:22Speaker 1: the Sirianni era, has been the run game and where
- 2:25Speaker 1: that run game will fall this year because last year
- 2:28Speaker 1: it was a mess.
- 2:30Speaker 3: It was terrible. Now, something we talked about a Monday show,
- 2:33Speaker 3: I'm going to expand a little bit here. Look, it
- 2:37Speaker 3: was probably one of the worst run blocking jobs we've seen.
- 2:40Speaker 3: This is our ninth year of Inside the Birds, our
- 2:43Speaker 3: ninth season. It's the worst run blocking job we've seen
- 2:47Speaker 3: since we've been doing these shows. It was terrible. Now,
- 2:50Speaker 3: here's the other part of it. Was it just the
- 2:54Speaker 3: offensive line or a little bit at Saquon Barkley, Like,
- 2:56Speaker 3: how much is it? It's hard to know about Greg
- 2:59Speaker 3: co sal who works us. You know, you know Greg
- 3:01Speaker 3: from NFL Films. He definitely thought Barkley was not quite
- 3:05Speaker 3: the same as he was in twenty four. Well how
- 3:07Speaker 3: could he be? So he dropped off a little bit now.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Something Jeff brought up on Monday Show and I like
- 3:13Speaker 3: this is why not get Tank Bigsby and Volved Moore
- 3:16Speaker 3: who looked really good other than the playoff game against
- 3:19Speaker 3: the nin er team and look good. They kind of
- 3:20Speaker 3: had him figure it out, but why not get him
- 3:23Speaker 3: involved as a change up. He's explosive, he bring something
- 3:26Speaker 3: to their offense. I but they've got to be willing
- 3:29Speaker 3: to do that. A new play caller who's new to
- 3:31Speaker 3: the team, and Sean Mannion who first time play caller.
- 3:34Speaker 3: We don't know how he sees that rotation winner Shipley
- 3:37Speaker 3: will be the third back that that's it. And it's
- 3:40Speaker 3: hard to imagine that either Damian Pierce or Leijah Mitchell
- 3:42Speaker 3: will beat ut Shipley for that number three job. But
- 3:45Speaker 3: we'll watch that in training camp. But they really need
- 3:48Speaker 3: to Mike this time around, give Barkley a little bit
- 3:50Speaker 3: of a break, and get Bixby the ball each game
- 3:53Speaker 3: a little bit more than they had last season.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I was actually you know, you did bring in
- 3:57Speaker 1: a couple extra running backs. You do have NFL experience,
- 3:59Speaker 1: you mentioned, yes, Eliza Mitchell. You wonder if that is
- 4:02Speaker 1: a sign that they do want to take a little
- 4:04Speaker 1: load off of And maybe they don't make the team,
- 4:07Speaker 1: but maybe it's a sign that they want to take
- 4:09Speaker 1: a little load off of Saquon Barkley. Who knows, But
- 4:12Speaker 1: you're right, the running game has to be on part.
- 4:15Speaker 1: You don't have to have a two thousand yard back.
- 4:17Speaker 1: We all know that, but I don't know. Fourteen to
- 4:19Speaker 1: fifteen hundred yards would feel pretty goo, wouldn't it.
- 4:21Speaker 3: That's what I thought he was going to get last year.
- 4:23Speaker 3: That was the number I gave last year's around fifteen hundred.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Of course it did come close to it. But I
- 4:27Speaker 3: love the over two years ago and last year I
- 4:29Speaker 3: missed it, but you know we didn't. But there's no
- 4:32Speaker 3: way to know that the offensive line would be that bad. Now.
- 4:34Speaker 3: They were beat up, they'd won the Super Bowl long season,
- 4:37Speaker 3: Dickson and Jargons were hurting physically, no question about it.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Lane Johnson obviously would get it, would get an injury
- 4:45Speaker 3: in season. He didn't. He didn't wind up not playing
- 4:48Speaker 3: after that. That was the problem. So yeah, they have
- 4:50Speaker 3: to play better Mike. But what one little little note
- 4:54Speaker 3: Elijah Mitchell Mike who was the Eagle side, who was
- 4:57Speaker 3: now twenty eight years old. While out time has flown,
- 5:00Speaker 3: he was a six round pick in twenty twenty one.
- 5:02Speaker 3: He was fantastic with Mike. He spent most of his
- 5:05Speaker 3: career either dealing with an injury on injury reserve. He's
- 5:09Speaker 3: been with the Nine Hours, the Chiefs, the Patriots, and
- 5:11Speaker 3: now with the Eagles. He is a outside zone specialist.
- 5:15Speaker 3: The Eagle's going to move a lot to outside zone
- 5:17Speaker 3: this season. He fits it well. He actually could push
- 5:21Speaker 3: Will Shipley for that number three role, but he's got
- 5:23Speaker 3: to stay healthy first of all.
- 5:25Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about the offensive line and really
- 5:28Speaker 1: the depth specifically at guard, which you know last year
- 5:34Speaker 1: wan In Dickerson had a lot of injury issues. They
- 5:37Speaker 1: got interior problems with injuries. We'll see what happens there, all.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Right, So you know they signed this to Michael Jordan,
- 5:43Speaker 3: not that Michael Jordan, the Hall of Fame basketball player,
- 5:45Speaker 3: but Michael Jordan, the twenty eight year old journeyman guard Mike.
- 5:51Speaker 3: And he's been with a bunch of teams. He's now
- 5:52Speaker 3: on at six team. He was a fourth round pick
- 5:56Speaker 3: of the Bengals at twenty nineteen, started over thirty games
- 6:00Speaker 3: in his career. He's he's really at best a fourth guard.
- 6:06Speaker 3: To me, Mike, they're not good enough at guard here.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I know that. We know for a fact. They've cross
- 6:10Speaker 3: trained Drew Kendell, who's going to be there. We're told
- 6:13Speaker 3: he's going to be the backup center of this season.
- 6:15Speaker 3: They cross trained Kennel at guard this offseason. Though he's
- 6:19Speaker 3: put on pounds on a frame. I saw the walk
- 6:22Speaker 3: right by me. I was surprised during the offseason program, Mike.
- 6:25Speaker 3: But he's just not strong enough. He doesn't have a
- 6:28Speaker 3: big frame. His dad, if you might remember, his dad, Pete,
- 6:31Speaker 3: played for the Seahawks and the and the Jets, who
- 6:34Speaker 3: is a really tough guy in the lineman. But Drew,
- 6:39Speaker 3: he's a more of an athlete than a Mauller. That's
- 6:42Speaker 3: my concerns of Mike. This is why Howie Roseman, you
- 6:44Speaker 3: got to you gotta talk about the the the the
- 6:47Speaker 3: front office. They've got to add quality depth of guard.
- 6:51Speaker 3: This would wear me a little bit.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yeah, and obviously they need better depth all over the
- 6:56Speaker 1: plate guard specifically, but you know last year, you know
- 7:00Speaker 1: Fred Johnson. They had to make a trade to go
- 7:02Speaker 1: get him, and it shows that they needed depth across
- 7:06Speaker 1: that line and their offensive line had problems.
- 7:09Speaker 2: When do you take a look at the past target group?
- 7:12Speaker 2: How important is that?
- 7:14Speaker 3: Yeah, this one, Look, they have enough players. That's not
- 7:18Speaker 3: the issue. It's the quality, all right. So we know
- 7:22Speaker 3: that if McKayle lemon is healthy and knows the offense
- 7:25Speaker 3: will be a starter. When they go to eleven personnel,
- 7:28Speaker 3: Dntavian Wicks will come in, will play at one outside position,
- 7:31Speaker 3: nor slave receiver. So there's eleven personnel. Then Brown will
- 7:34Speaker 3: be what we call a rotational deeth, right, he'll rotate
- 7:36Speaker 3: a little bit with He'll come in him and Wicks
- 7:39Speaker 3: will play a little bit. Him and Smith will play
- 7:41Speaker 3: when they go to speed package. So they have enough
- 7:43Speaker 3: guys and Garis Cooper is a good story. That's not
- 7:45Speaker 3: the problem. I just I don't know. I don't know.
- 7:49Speaker 3: The Eagles are counting on Dantavian Wicks, as they guaranteed
- 7:52Speaker 3: nine million over these two seasons when they extended his
- 7:54Speaker 3: contract a year. Wis to me has got to prove it.
- 7:57Speaker 3: He did not have a good year with the Packers.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I strongly believe he would not have and back he
- 8:01Speaker 3: would have not made the Packers roster most likely had
- 8:04Speaker 3: the Eagles not traded for him or someone else traded
- 8:06Speaker 3: for him. So this is something to watch in training camp.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Brown and Wicks and Brown Mike, he don't make the team.
- 8:12Speaker 3: They fully guaranteed five million at signing. All the cash
- 8:15Speaker 3: they own is fully guaranteed. So he's not going anywhere.
- 8:18Speaker 3: But he has a been a factor in a while.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Like disconcerned for me a little bit.
- 8:22Speaker 1: All right, that's on the offensive side of the ball.
- 8:24Speaker 1: We are taking a look at what will take for
- 8:27Speaker 1: the Eagles to make a Super Bowl run. Those are
- 8:29Speaker 1: some of the keys on the offense. What about Vic
- 8:31Speaker 1: Fangio's defense.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Yeah, so something we've talked about a couple of times
- 8:35Speaker 3: in the offseason. Mike is Vic Fangio, and we know
- 8:39Speaker 3: historically talking to some people work with him in forty
- 8:41Speaker 3: nine Ers, they love Vic, but they thought their defensive
- 8:45Speaker 3: line was gassed by the time they came to the
- 8:46Speaker 3: Super Bowl against the Ravens. That game out obviously New
- 8:51Speaker 3: Orleans when the lights went out, but they felt like
- 8:53Speaker 3: their d line was gassed. And we understand. Look, it's
- 8:57Speaker 3: hard to argue with anything he does. He's brilliant, but man,
- 8:59Speaker 3: he's got to be willing to rotate more. And part
- 9:02Speaker 3: of that, Mike is Ty Robinson's got to be a factor.
- 9:05Speaker 3: He barely played as a rookie. He didn't ear in
- 9:07Speaker 3: the playing time. That's fine, but clin Hart, the d
- 9:10Speaker 3: line coach, is great and fansho they've got to start
- 9:12Speaker 3: developing this player. Barron Young, let's think about the bench.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Eagles don't know that right now. So Ty Robinson might's
- 9:18Speaker 3: got to start developing.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Uh yeah, fourth round pick last year, and the Eagles
- 9:22Speaker 1: have done a good job of finding these defensive tackles
- 9:25Speaker 1: in the later rounds, right, I mean, they've done a
- 9:27Speaker 1: good job of getting.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Guys to be a rotational guy.
- 9:32Speaker 1: So you're right, Robinson, if he could step up this year,
- 9:36Speaker 1: what about at corner where they had a you know
- 9:39Speaker 1: last year. Obviously he got up to a bumpy start.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I wouldn't say it was great all year, but that
- 9:44Speaker 1: constantly was in question last year.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Look, let's let's be honest, mikeah Dory Jackson wasn't as
- 9:49Speaker 3: bad as maybe some of us thought, but he wasn't
- 9:52Speaker 3: good enough. That's why he's not back rig Wolm will
- 9:55Speaker 3: start that obviously a done deal. Will start offs at Mitchell.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Legals have two tall corners. They both could run. Will's
- 10:02Speaker 3: got a lead size. He's six foot four one tenths
- 10:05Speaker 3: of an inch. That's super tall for a corner. He's
- 10:07Speaker 3: got to play consistently well. Again, this is about being
- 10:09Speaker 3: a super Bowl team. It's something about making the playoffs.
- 10:12Speaker 3: It's not about winning the division. If they want to
- 10:14Speaker 3: make a super Bowl run, he's got to play way better.
- 10:17Speaker 3: You know, he was bent for a time last year,
- 10:19Speaker 3: a short time and then he wind up being a starter.
- 10:22Speaker 3: But he's got to play better. Mic and there's a
- 10:24Speaker 3: reason why he signed a one year deal. It's a
- 10:25Speaker 3: lot of money twelve million, but he's got to play
- 10:28Speaker 3: consistently well. And then the other thing is John and
- 10:30Speaker 3: Jones is the first corner off the bench. Like he
- 10:33Speaker 3: turns thirty three in September, just after the season starts.
- 10:38Speaker 3: It's very rare for a corner to play in thirty three,
- 10:41Speaker 3: thirty four to thirty five. You don't know how good
- 10:43Speaker 3: he's going to be. We'll start learning in training camp
- 10:45Speaker 3: what he's got left. But if one doesn't play well,
- 10:49Speaker 3: gets hurt. Jones is first up Mike, and they don't
- 10:52Speaker 3: know it yet. So we're gonna learn a lot a
- 10:54Speaker 3: lot about Jones at training camp and see what he's
- 10:56Speaker 3: got left.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Well, and then you know, you got Cooper dejean ye
- 11:00Speaker 1: to a new position. This is a guy that's been
- 11:02Speaker 1: a key factor in the defense the last two years
- 11:05Speaker 1: and you're basically taking him out of that role and
- 11:07Speaker 1: putting him in a new role. Is he going to
- 11:08Speaker 1: be more impactful in this role than he was in
- 11:11Speaker 1: that role.
- 11:12Speaker 2: That's a big question for me.
- 11:13Speaker 3: So they've left it open. Look, they're not They're thinking
- 11:17Speaker 3: that wone will be good so they don't have to
- 11:19Speaker 3: bench him. But what they could do, and I didn't
- 11:22Speaker 3: really mention this with Jones, is let's let's say Wolln
- 11:25Speaker 3: surreties out for four to six weeks, right, it's got
- 11:27Speaker 3: an mcl spring. Let's say he's out or something and
- 11:31Speaker 3: they are not. Let's say Jones has lost a step.
- 11:33Speaker 3: They just like, they don't think he could play anymore.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Goop will go back to the corner. That will happen like that,
- 11:38Speaker 3: That's the only way it would happen. Right now, they
- 11:40Speaker 3: have no plans for him to play corner. But if
- 11:42Speaker 3: Wollen gets hurt or gets benched, but that would suck.
- 11:46Speaker 3: If that have that's a lot of money. Jones can't
- 11:48Speaker 3: play anymore. He just did thirty three that he doesn't
- 11:50Speaker 3: look like he could play. You got it like Benjio
- 11:52Speaker 3: doesn't care. He's gonna do whatever it takes to win.
- 11:55Speaker 3: And that's that's one way Degen could go back to corner.
- 11:57Speaker 3: But speaking of safety, he's just got to be comfortab
- 12:00Speaker 3: with it. Uh. It's a position that he's mostly new to.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Like that. He's played a little bit of safety in
- 12:06Speaker 3: his football playing career, but very little and no obviously
- 12:08Speaker 3: in this defense, it's brand new for him. He's got
- 12:11Speaker 3: to be comfortable with it. Mike, Now, this will him
- 12:13Speaker 3: going to safety. It alleviates the issue for them to
- 12:17Speaker 3: make a big move in safety. They're obviously not going to.
- 12:19Speaker 3: They can make a minor move and it sounds like
- 12:20Speaker 3: they're going to add a safety by training camp. That's
- 12:22Speaker 3: how he resumeated clear they want to do that. But
- 12:24Speaker 3: they've got apps. They've got Michael Carter, he took a
- 12:27Speaker 3: major pay cup. They've got Andre sam Coles, Newski Trolds
- 12:31Speaker 3: coming back from a lower body injury. But he should
- 12:33Speaker 3: be ready by training camp or just after it. But
- 12:36Speaker 3: the bottom line is, Mike, they have enough players. Is
- 12:39Speaker 3: it great? Mccouba, it's a chunk of the season, that
- 12:42Speaker 3: safety position, Mike, it's got to get you up a
- 12:44Speaker 3: little bit. We'll learn a lot more obviously in training
- 12:46Speaker 3: camp about it.
- 12:46Speaker 2: However, Now, when they.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Traded for Michael Carter last year, I mean, he had
- 12:49Speaker 1: been a guy who had been a productive NFL player
- 12:52Speaker 1: with the Jets, Nicol It's just right exactly, but like
- 12:55Speaker 1: it was he uh, not what they expected, not just
- 12:59Speaker 1: because he came in, Like do they expect a better
- 13:01Speaker 1: player than the one they traded for last year in
- 13:03Speaker 1: the middle of the year.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Now, yeah, he barely played, only playing in diamond, And
- 13:09Speaker 3: what we report at the time was they're going to
- 13:10Speaker 3: start cross training him with safety. He was a terrific
- 13:14Speaker 3: safety at Duke, and then the Jets felt like he'd
- 13:17Speaker 3: be better off as a nickel defender, so he moved
- 13:19Speaker 3: to nickel. Great, got extension for it, play regress, got
- 13:23Speaker 3: bench twice, got traded to the Eagles. As we predicted
- 13:27Speaker 3: what happened. If he's going to come back, he'd take
- 13:28Speaker 3: a massive pay cut. He took his seventy five percent
- 13:31Speaker 3: pay cut. He didn't have any choice to come back.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I still believe he'll beat out Marcus Epps. We'll see
- 13:37Speaker 3: what happens. He's younger. He to me, he's a better athlete,
- 13:41Speaker 3: got better versatility. But Apps is a guy who knows
- 13:45Speaker 3: his defense. He's been longer. So that's a good training
- 13:48Speaker 3: camp battle, by the way, versus Carter.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Definitely looking forward to see if Carter can be a
- 13:55Speaker 1: bigger factor after the retreat than he was last year.
- 13:58Speaker 2: To Coourian bennett' still here too, right.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I know. It's so funny because I remember at the
- 14:04Speaker 3: time of the trade, were like, you know, this guy
- 14:07Speaker 3: was hoghy, thought of got bad shoulders. You know, that's
- 14:10Speaker 3: a problem. He he bit on injured reserve twice, went
- 14:15Speaker 3: on injured reserve unfortunately, had a pretty significant injury with
- 14:17Speaker 3: the Eagles in September, the Tory pectorial muscle. Then he
- 14:21Speaker 3: came back, you know, l later in the season and
- 14:25Speaker 3: he just never could be a factor. He missed too
- 14:27Speaker 3: much time. The Eagles made the trade late, as you
- 14:30Speaker 3: remember in August last year. He is now in the
- 14:33Speaker 3: final uvers rookie deal so because of the way it's
- 14:36Speaker 3: it is, he's on the last series deal. He's not
- 14:38Speaker 3: a lot to make the team, and he could run,
- 14:41Speaker 3: but Tom's running out on him. Yeah, he is on
- 14:43Speaker 3: the team, Mike for now.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I remember when they made that trade. My buddy out
- 14:47Speaker 1: in Vegas was like, this guy was their best corner,
- 14:50Speaker 1: but he just didn't fit Pete carroll.
- 14:53Speaker 2: System, you know.
