- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presented by Sea Kick. This is episode 494.
- 0:19I'll be your host, Kyle Corden. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:22Reyes. Nate.
- 0:28How? Yeah.
- 0:28How? Yeah.
- 0:29How? Yeah.
- 0:29How you doing? Double enough, huh?
- 0:37I mean, when's, when's the last time we've gotten a chance to
- 0:40talk about the A's in a positive light, much less the an
- 0:44offseason when we've got to talk about the A's?
- 0:46Because the only time you talk about teams during the offseason
- 0:48is when they're either, you know, spending money or, or, or
- 0:51making trades. I'm not.
- 0:54Super thrilled with the fact that you can't even find your
- 0:57polo. The Billy Bean polo, Yeah, it's
- 1:03I'd like burned it. She might have.
- 1:04I'd like to think that that's got to be like a within reach at
- 1:09all times. I thought it was right here on
- 1:11the table next to me where I left it, but it's gone.
- 1:14The thing strapped. Might have, might have thrown it
- 1:16away, might have burned it. That's not good.
- 1:22I don't know, but I appreciate that.
- 1:24What I do know is we're talking about the A's and the offseason
- 1:27and what a you know, what a day, what a day, what a day for the
- 1:32A's. This is a crazy day.
- 1:37This is a monumental day for the Oakland Socks.
- 1:40I saw that. Sorry, that was not intentional.
- 1:44Promise. Promise.
- 1:46The A's the athletics. Monumental day for the A's.
- 1:52Joking aside, you're going to have to help me with that.
- 1:54Like it's that's going to take some time to get used to, not
- 1:56just dropping Oakland A's. Like caught me some slack.
- 2:00It's weird that we can't even say Sacramento either.
- 2:03Can't say it. They don't want it.
- 2:05They don't have to say Sacramento is.
- 2:07You know what they do want, though?
- 2:08They want Luis Severino. And they went out and got him
- 2:14the the large, the richest deal in A's history at $67 million.
- 2:29I'll say, I'll say that again. The richest deal in the A's
- 2:33history at $67.67 dollars, $67 million.
- 2:42I've got broke on the brain. I've got broke on the brain,
- 2:47$67,000,000 to Luis Severino. What are your thoughts here,
- 2:53man? I mean, you like we can, we can
- 2:56make jokes, but I mean, we can, we can point to the fact that
- 3:00it's taken them quite literally 20 years to do this.
- 3:05Yeah, but they did it. You know, I feel like this is
- 3:09something you had to do with the whole move to Sacramento,
- 3:13eventual possible move to Vegas situation.
- 3:16This is this is I think where you had to start at the very
- 3:20least. What are your thoughts?
- 3:23I was trying to confirm there's an opt out after year 2 I
- 3:26believe right? Yes.
- 3:29That makes me feel a lot better. I was going to say I didn't love
- 3:32it. Now I really love it and here's
- 3:34why. Because I thought the opt out
- 3:35was after year 1 and why I love it having the opt out after year
- 3:422 is because they basically saw an opportunity to, in my
- 3:49opinion, buy a nice little prospect hall if he's successful
- 3:57before the trade deadline. This is an investment to your
- 4:01farm system. That's how I see this.
- 4:06It's hey, this is like a a no lose situation in my mind
- 4:12because let's say he doesn't have a very good first half.
- 4:16Let's say he kind of regresses after 2024.
- 4:21At least you can look at the as be like, you know what, I'm
- 4:24proud of you for going for it. I don't think there's anybody
- 4:27out there that's going to hate on this deal.
- 4:32You say, you know what, you went for it.
- 4:33You saw an opportunity and you paid up and it's he got over
- 4:38what a lot of predictions said he was going to get.
- 4:42Yeah, I meant to look it up. What were what was he?
- 4:43What was he pegged to get? Not that, not that.
- 4:47No. Well, you have to overpay if
- 4:49you're the Oakland if you're the A's.
- 4:53See, but that's The thing is that you have to overpay.
- 4:56I, I think these estimations are wrong.
- 4:58I really do no, I think a lot of people, I think a lot of these
- 5:01guys are getting higher, are going to be getting higher
- 5:03contracts in these estimations well at.
- 5:05Least from a pitching standpoint.
- 5:07The starting That's the starting pitcher pool.
- 5:09Yeah, that's that's mostly what we've seen go thus far like the
- 5:12sort of like the middle tier guys.
- 5:14But it in this case, I don't know if it was necessarily the
- 5:17estimate was wrong. I think it was more, again, the
- 5:22fact that the the A's were going to have to overpay because at
- 5:25the ultimately who's going, who's choosing to sign up for
- 5:28this unless you're getting well over what you were expected to.
- 5:32Get yeah, I mean, I understand. And and not to mention he's
- 5:35going to pitch in a minor league ballpark, which is much smaller
- 5:40than what Oakland was. He was he.
- 5:43They had him projected at three years, $51 million.
- 5:46Yeah. So that's a good chunk over but.
- 5:4916,000,000. Kind of rounding out my point
- 5:51here, I think the reason I like so much at the opt out is that
- 5:54after the second year is because if if he does have a successful
- 5:58first half and you decide, you know, we're out of it.
- 6:01As you know, the A's typically are around that that time of
- 6:05year and they ship him out of town.
- 6:07You're giving, you're not just selling a rental.
- 6:10This isn't a one year deal that, you know, you're signing a
- 6:13veteran to that you can get something at the deadline for
- 6:18you're you're sending this guy for a year and a half, possibly
- 6:242 1/2 years if he decides to, you know, pick up that option.
- 6:28So I really like this. I really like this.
- 6:32I like it for Severino. I like it for the A's and I like
- 6:36it for whatever team is potentially buying in at that
- 6:43deadline. And in reality, what is it, $10
- 6:48million signing bonus? I like that.
- 6:54What does that break out to you like 20-2 ish?
- 6:58Yeah, 22 and change per year. Also, I think I read somewhere
- 7:05that the A's are trying to get to $100 million payroll.
- 7:12Yes, this year. That's the goal.
- 7:14Yeah, trying to ramp it up to a hundred 100 million, but by by
- 7:20the end of this offseason, correct.
- 7:22That's what I thought. Like going into 2025, that's
- 7:25what I thought. Yeah, I'm a fan.
- 7:31And look like this isn't, this isn't some bit on the Severino
- 7:34thing, at least for me, I won't speak for you, but like go back,
- 7:37go back to the start. And we just went over this when
- 7:39we did our, we did our look back on our hot takes once the year
- 7:44was over. It was just a couple episodes
- 7:46ago. And we, we went back to the
- 7:48can't didn't see this coming award or something like that.
- 7:51And I'd, I'd put Severino's name into the mix in terms of like
- 7:56this is something I'm just keep an eye on Severino.
- 7:58This is going to be something that you know a lot of people
- 8:01aren't going to see coming down the pipe giving him props before
- 8:04the season started been like this.
- 8:06I think this is maybe not a breakout year, but like this is
- 8:09going to be some sort of somewhat of a bounce back for
- 8:12Severino and he was I think he I think he upheld his end of the
- 8:17bargain in that regard. I.
- 8:21And I think he I think he is making money that he earned
- 8:25because I agree, there was flashes, really, really good
- 8:30flashes with the Yankees. And I've always been a fan.
- 8:34I've always had that inkling that he was going to succeed
- 8:37after he left couple injury stints.
- 8:41But like overall, I think the ceiling is pretty high.
- 8:48I think he can be better than what he was in 2024.
- 8:50I think he has more in the tank. Yeah, I I would agree.
- 8:53So this is like a building block.
- 8:55You know, 2024 with the Mets was like a confidence boost.
- 8:58Like, hey, I still got it. I think I can tap into what I
- 9:03used to be. And now he's going to do it in
- 9:07Sacramento, potentially finishing the year somewhere
- 9:11else for a relatively friendly trade number.
- 9:21I mean, I think what would that he'll, he'll be at like 10
- 9:24million for the rest of the year if someone trades for him and
- 9:29then on the 22 and change the next year.
- 9:31So this is a smart deal. I'm actually really impressed
- 9:37with the A's. The more I talk about it, the
- 9:39more impressed I get. I'm I'm still fixated on the
- 9:46numbers if I'm being honest. The 67,000,000 being the
- 9:49largest. It's pretty sad.
- 9:52Guaranteed deal in franchise history.
- 9:54But like I said, yeah, I mean, what's done is done.
- 9:58But the fact that, you know, they're starting out this next
- 10:02chapter with with the move such as this, I like it.
- 10:07And you know, it's it's not a it's not a move that like they
- 10:11didn't just go out and recklessly sign like Max Freed
- 10:14and like, OK, there there's our guy.
- 10:16Like they're there. Are you happy now, fans?
- 10:19We went out and spent money. No, like this is, say what you
- 10:24will about ownership, the front office, what have you, but I
- 10:27feel like this was it like you were saying this was a smart
- 10:30baseball move. Like there's going to there.
- 10:33Like if, if it doesn't go the way you hoped for on the field
- 10:37as a team, there's there's a route you can take with
- 10:40Severino. If it does go well, there's a
- 10:42route you can take with Severino.
- 10:43So like this, this wasn't, you know, reckless spending.
- 10:47This was a again, you probably overpay, overspend a little bit,
- 10:51but you had to because again, who's coming, who's, who's
- 10:54signing up for the, for the athletics experience right now,
- 10:58Not many, if any. So you're going to have to spend
- 11:00a little bit more. And you know, I think this will
- 11:03work out both for both parties. I, I really love the structure
- 11:07of this deal. I love, I love the opt out after
- 11:12year 2 move. Like I, I would copy and paste
- 11:15this I, I could look at a bunch of other teams across the league
- 11:20and say you can very much copy and paste this deal, this
- 11:24structure with a bunch of other names in the free agent list.
- 11:30I really like this. Like to me, I think we all saw
- 11:34what the Blake Snell thing was going to be.
- 11:36The opt out after year 1 was A was a no duh kind of thing if
- 11:42anything. Like shame on the Giants.
- 11:46Shame on the Giants for not moving him.
- 11:51So whatever. I was reading through the
- 11:53article. The Eric Eric Chavez deal was
- 12:01the prior record holder for the A's.
- 12:04What's crazy is that at the 66 million, it was a six year deal.
- 12:09Correct. Yeah.
- 12:10And then for, for a three-year deal, the largest, the largest
- 12:19total that or the, the highest total that they'd spent on a
- 12:21three-year deal was for Billy Butler, which was 30 million.
- 12:26Good old Billy. So they more than they more than
- 12:31doubled their largest the the last time they spent this much
- 12:35money on a three-year deal, more than doubled it.
- 12:38Yeah, I wonder where I'll start. I mean, they still got a long
- 12:41way to go. They still, I, I think this is,
- 12:44I don't know what it, I don't know overall payroll what
- 12:47they're looking at, but I think they're only in like the 50s
- 12:50right now. So they still like, if the goal
- 12:53is to get to 100, they still got a lot more to do.
- 12:58And I think it's it's tough because I'm not, I don't know if
- 13:01the arbitration deals have been put into those current numbers
- 13:06yet for some of the contract websites.
- 13:10Their payroll at this past season was 47.2 million.
- 13:14Yeah, 'cause I think after, after the arbitration deals get
- 13:20done, they're, they're like in the 50s, close to 60 at the like
- 13:26at the moment without any other signings.
- 13:28So go get an Anthony Santander. You won't.
- 13:36Don't push the buttons, Nate. Let's not get let's not get
- 13:39carried away now. Like, I think baby steps are to
- 13:43be applauded here, but I don't think that we need to be taking
- 13:47leaps like Santander, you know, leap, you know, good for Savvy
- 13:51for going out and getting his bag.
- 13:52But let's leave. Let's leave a guy like Santander
- 13:55for the rest of the league to choose.
- 13:57Go get you a bag. Bregman is on the market.
- 14:00Go get him. OK, Yeah.
- 14:02And while you're at it, just round out the rotation, go get
- 14:05freed, go get Burns there. You go get it done.
- 14:08Trade for crochet? Good.
- 14:11Trade for sale, even good? Why not get a Cy Young winner in
- 14:15the rotation? Why not?
- 14:17What's crazy is that they can if they really wanted to.
- 14:20What? Do you think, I mean, what do
- 14:21you think it would take to get Otani in Oakland?
- 14:23Excuse me, Sacramento. Stop saying it.
- 14:28I've already slipped up three times.
- 14:29Yeah, it's not good. We're we're just just now 15
- 14:33minutes into this thing. Figure it out.
- 14:37All right, well, that's enough on the Oakland A's.
- 14:39Kudos to the A's. Big, big time stuff.
- 14:43Big time stuff there for the A's.
- 14:46What's not so much big time is Aroldis Chapman landing in
- 14:52Boston. I hate it, I don't like it and I
- 15:03wish it never happened. That's that's sort of my
- 15:07thoughts. If you were hoping for my
- 15:08thoughts on on Aroldis Chapman to the Red Sox, those are my
- 15:11thoughts. On a baseball sensor, you
- 15:15someone happy? No, come on, I'm not.
- 15:19I'm not. I I mean, yeah, he's a baseball
- 15:22sense. He's got good strikeouts,
- 15:24swinging, missed off That's we know this.
- 15:27But just as easily he can cost a game for you.
- 15:32We've seen it. He's been memes time and time
- 15:36again because of it. You're not wrong in the biggest
- 15:39spots. Not saying he has to be perfect,
- 15:42but it's also rolled as Chapman like have some read the room,
- 15:46Boston read the room. There's just certain guys.
- 15:49You just don't you just don't go after.
- 15:52You know, that would be like the Red Sox going out and getting
- 15:54Manny Machado. You know, it's like no, read the
- 15:57room. You don't want to bring in a guy
- 15:59who ended arguably one of the the most fan favorite players in
- 16:04Dustin Bedroy. You don't want to you.
- 16:06And whether or not you want to say he actually ruined Dustin
- 16:10Bedroy's career is another thing.
- 16:11But it's like a read the room situation.
- 16:13You're not going to go out and get a guy like Manny Machado.
- 16:15And you certainly should not have gone out and gotten guy
- 16:17like Aroldis Chapman. That's just to me, that's common
- 16:20sense. But maybe they're looking past
- 16:22that and going, you know what, like we need to fill some holes.
- 16:26I just wish, however, they would have filled the hole or or holes
- 16:30plural, if they if they were hoping to get more bullpen help
- 16:34was again, Tanner Scott. I feel like that's a target for
- 16:37a lot of teams. But if if it comes back to this,
- 16:41this belief that the Red Sox are going to be spending and we'll,
- 16:45we'll touch on it with the Soto thing.
- 16:47But it's like, OK, if that's the case, if if we're opening up the
- 16:50checkbook, why are we settling for a guy like Arrold Chapman?
- 16:53Why not just spend the extra few $1,000,000 and go get a guy like
- 16:56or how you know, whatever it ends up being AAV wise, go out
- 17:00and get a guy like Tanner Scott. You bring up a good point and I
- 17:03think that's that's one of the biggest bugaboos that I saw with
- 17:06this deal is that like again, we're seeing names that should
- 17:10typically fall towards the back end of free agency going right
- 17:14now. But I agree, like if the Red Sox
- 17:18are going to come out and say we're going to spend, I don't
- 17:20understand the one year veteran probably set up occasional save
- 17:28role. Like I don't, I don't understand
- 17:30that. Yeah, I mean, if, if Liam
- 17:33Hendricks is your guy coming into 2025, which all signs point
- 17:37to that, I'm OK with that. I'm OK with that.
- 17:43If that's the case, you can assume that with, with friend of
- 17:47the pod Liam Hendrix's, you know, injury history and, and,
- 17:51and all that, that Chapman is going to have to eventually step
- 17:54in for the occasional save and, and may even end up with more
- 17:57saves. And some people might
- 17:58anticipate, depending upon how things go.
- 18:01But. Would you rather have seen like
- 18:03Kenley come back? No, with, I hate to say it, but
- 18:07with the way with the way things ended there, it just left a real
- 18:11sour taste in my mouth. I just was not a fan of it.
- 18:14He, he already had a foot out the door, it seemed, and was
- 18:17just, I don't know, I was pleased with what he did for us
- 18:21over the, the multiple years that he was in Boston, but I was
- 18:25happy to close that door. And it was really more of a
- 18:27bridge, at least this year. I think people were viewing this
- 18:31year as a bridge to get to Liam anyway, because we, Liam was
- 18:34recovering and they're going OK, Kenley, what Kenley's been doing
- 18:38for us is great. And he had a, he had a good year
- 18:40overall, But I think people were, were looking at that with
- 18:44the assumption that this isn't his job in 2025.
- 18:47And I think he looked at it that way as well.
- 18:49Yeah, but like I said, I mean, I just, I don't really fully
- 18:53understand the we're going to spend, you know, you're you're
- 18:59you're putting it out there that you're in on all these free
- 19:01agents and they they still may very well land some of these
- 19:04guys. It's just it's it's an odd move
- 19:08to me when there's when you're talking about spending, there's
- 19:12better relievers out there. It's is there like an underlying
- 19:20Yankee jab that's trying to happen here?
- 19:24Like I'm, I'm just, I'm a little lost on like the overall timing
- 19:29of the decision. I understand, look, I understand
- 19:33this if it's again, like if it's January 25th and you know, most
- 19:41of the big names are gone, you've already spent some money
- 19:43on some guys. This is like a filler deal.
- 19:46It's just odd to me, that's all, with again to.
- 19:54To touch on the Soto thing, if your plan as the Boston Red Sox
- 20:00was to sort of lay a foundation this offseason, this free agency
- 20:04of saying like, hey, we're going to show you that we're serious.
- 20:07We're going to go out and make some some pre emptive moves
- 20:10here. Talking to Soto, of course, and
- 20:14being like, hey, we're serious about this.
- 20:16We're already in the process of, I mean, the, the youthful talent
- 20:20that we've already got. We're we're good there, we're
- 20:23set, but we want to we want to take the extra step, show you
- 20:26that we are serious about acquiring you and we're going to
- 20:30go out we're going to go out and sign a frontline starter, maybe
- 20:362 and then think about whether or not this is a good fit.
- 20:40Instead of doing that, they they went out and got a guy like a
- 20:43rollers Chapman, which who's to say?
- 20:45I mean, we may wake up tomorrow and we and get the news that Max
- 20:48Reid's coming to Boston and maybe this is all for not, but I
- 20:52just feel like there would have been a better way to go about it
- 20:55and and and better names to go about it with.
- 20:58But I understand though, if, if even some of these pictures,
- 21:02because some of them are Boris clients, if it's all depend upon
- 21:06Soto first. So maybe maybe that that's not
- 21:09even a scenario, a realistic scenario.
- 21:11Maybe you can't go out and and get a guy like Burns or
- 21:15something because you have to wait for the Soto domino domino
- 21:17to fall. I don't know, but I just wish, I
- 21:21just wish it was anybody else except Chapman.
- 21:23I mean, I don't know Taylor Scott, anybody else.
- 21:31Hoffman was another name that I think was linked to the Sox
- 21:33earlier this offseat. Like, I mean, you know, Kirby
- 21:36Yates, you know, basically the same age also had a really good
- 21:42year. I mean, my only thought is that
- 21:46they're they're trying to go into this with the whole Andrew
- 21:52Bailey school of Hard Knocks kind of kind of thing and go,
- 21:57you know, he's already got swing and miss stuff.
- 21:59Let's see if we can maximize it even further, which maybe, you
- 22:05know, too much of A reach given his age and and what he's
- 22:08already done. I don't know.
- 22:09Like you said, like that, I one of the bigger issues is that
- 22:13when he's in a ballpark like this, he he, we've watched him
- 22:18work himself into a jam more often than not in in big
- 22:23moments. And I think that's why he's
- 22:25falling out of the closer role. I don't know if he's going to
- 22:28permit. I don't, I don't know if Liam
- 22:30Hendricks is going to be able to come off an injury and and have
- 22:34a 3035 save season. And like you were saying, you're
- 22:39going to need him in some of these moments in a ballpark like
- 22:42Fenway, like you walk two guys and you give up a bomb it like
- 22:48you're never out of it in Fenway already.
- 22:50That's already a mentality and did not have.
- 22:55I don't know. I mean, Clay Holmes would have
- 22:57been a better fit there, you know what I mean?
- 22:58Like a ground ball guy, but somebody that has done what he's
- 23:06done and had the track record. I don't I it's just, again, it's
- 23:09kind of a confusing move for me. For as much crap as I gave you
- 23:13for Clay Holmes this year, I would have much rather had Clay
- 23:16Holmes. Like anybody about to roll this
- 23:18Chapman. Because I can already see it.
- 23:21I can already see it in my head, and I can see it in my Twitter
- 23:24feed. There's going to be a picture of
- 23:25a ball that goes 600 feet over the green Monster, and he's just
- 23:30going to be staring at the Green Monster.
- 23:32Yeah, with not a thought behind those eyes.
- 23:35Except he's going to. Sucks so weird in the uniform.
- 23:37Oh, it's going to be terrible. And all these people saying
- 23:40like, well, how Red Sox fans have to change their tune.
- 23:44No, majority of Red Sox fans still can't stand the guy,
- 23:48really can't. And like, this is not nearly to
- 23:51the same effect. But this is like when we got
- 23:53Tommy Pham and people were like, well, Tommy Pham, how do you
- 23:56feel? No, still don't really like the
- 23:57guy. And I was glad when when he was
- 23:59out of there. So this is just much worse
- 24:03though, because it's a role as Chapman, but.
- 24:05I I feel like your franchise is just extremely tone deaf
- 24:10sometimes. And we were off to such a good
- 24:13start again for the third time with this whole Soto thing.
- 24:17It did. If we if the Red Sox are a
- 24:20serious contender here, you're already working in the right
- 24:25direction in terms of the like in the eyes of your fans, the
- 24:30the PR is moving in the right direction.
- 24:32But then you go out and you stunt that with a signing of a
- 24:35role as Chapman. Doesn't make any sense.
- 24:37Didn't didn't seem to read the room tone deaf like you said.
- 24:41What's a what's a failure of an offseason in your eyes?
- 24:45Like a realistic failure? Obviously you can say they don't
- 24:47sign anybody and that's a failure, duh, But a realistic
- 24:50they're going to get somebody. But what is a failed offseason?
- 24:55Well, what did I say a few episodes ago?
- 24:57I think you need like, well, this isn't I would have liked
- 25:03maybe a Tanner Scott, one of these, one of the big three arms
- 25:08now 2 arms with Snell off the board and.
- 25:12Like a mid level and a power bat.
- 25:15Yeah, maybe a guy like Tay Oscar, but there's reports
- 25:19floating around now a credible or not, I'm not sure.
- 25:21I've looked into it, looked at it.
- 25:24It seemed more pointed. So I thought that maybe there
- 25:27was some validity to to the Tay Oscar to back to LA situation
- 25:32because it wasn't all these people just being like, oh, Tay
- 25:34Oscar's going back to LA. It was like one or two reports.
- 25:38But a guy like Tay Oscar, like give me Tay Oscar, give me
- 25:42fried, give me Scott and I'm OK, I'm I'm happy.
- 25:46But if? Say you say you get.
- 25:50Say you get. No more bullpen arms.
- 25:55You get burns and you bring back Tyler O'Neill.
- 26:00How do you feel? Not good enough.
- 26:03Not good enough, so you you really need a a good bat plus
- 26:08the top three. Well, if you're not going to
- 26:09give me bullpen help, I'm going to need a better bat.
- 26:13It's, it's like those, it's like those exercises.
- 26:15You know, when it's like there's three things and it's like you
- 26:18can only have two. But when you try to do that,
- 26:21when you try to get that third thing, then one of the other
- 26:23things gives, you know what I'm talking about.
- 26:25It's like those sliders. It's basically like that.
- 26:27If you're, if you're going to give me 0 bullpen help, then the
- 26:30starter that we get and the bat that we get are going to have to
- 26:33be on the other end of the spectrum here, like in, in a
- 26:36good way. And if if you give me no bullpen
- 26:40and you're saying, hey, you can have Tyler O'nell back, no.
- 26:46I do think Yoshida gets flipped for an arm.
- 26:50I. Do think that I do think that
- 26:51happens somewhere. I love that It's probably after
- 26:56seeing what happens, the dominoes of Sodo plus the the
- 27:02three arms. Anyway, just curious.
- 27:06You need a big offseason, man. That's that's you have high
- 27:10expectations. Like a month ago, this whole
- 27:13soda thing wasn't even on my radar, But here we are with like
- 27:17multiple reports from I think reporters that we can trust.
- 27:20Not all of these reports, but some reports have made it clear
- 27:24that the Red Sox at the very least are in the mix.
- 27:27And they've they've extended all they they've extended out
- 27:30legitimate offers. So I'm like, all right, well, I
- 27:32wasn't expecting much coming into this offseason, but it like
- 27:35if this is if this is where we're planting our flag, like if
- 27:37this is the direction we're headed, then I'm going to need
- 27:40to see a little bit more if the soda thing falls through.
- 27:43You just want to get into it? Sure.
- 27:47Just want to get into soda? Get a soda thing.
- 27:52Hold that thought. Just just very briefly here.
- 27:57We'll we'll get into this other thing.
- 27:58Your guy. Hi, Sung Kim was posted.
- 28:03And I'm not going to lie, it's still it's still kind of throws
- 28:06me off. I didn't understand.
- 28:07Yeah, still throws me off, But no, if you're listening, you
- 28:11don't. You have no idea who we're
- 28:12talking about. It's not Ha Song Kim, it's Hai
- 28:14Song Kim. South Korean All Star Second
- 28:17Baseman was posted this week and will be eligible to sign as a
- 28:22free agent through January 3rd. Desperate times, folks,
- 28:31Desperate times. This is where we're at right now
- 28:32in the offseason. I'm pretty sure I read a passing
- 28:37tweet saying he doesn't think this will be like a big league
- 28:49impact player right away. Baseball America had described
- 28:55it as a situation of they they said a team laning Kim will
- 29:01likely view him as a top or bottom of the order hitter who
- 29:03will hit for average and make plenty of contact from the left
- 29:05side. But their concerns his lack of
- 29:07power could limit his impact. He's going to give you great
- 29:11defense, Said he's won the KBO equivalent of the Gold Glove
- 29:16twice at second base. But he's played 1000, roughly
- 29:221000 games in the KBO and has just 37 home runs.
- 29:28How old is this guy? 1000 Games. 26 in January.
- 29:37Whatever. I I don't know.
- 29:39I don't know if I have a landing spot necessarily.
- 29:42I'd I'd to be honest with you, I didn't even know why it made
- 29:44headlines like. I I understand that's what I
- 29:46meant. Slower point of the slower point
- 29:48in the offseason here, but I'm like you do.
- 29:52I mean, you just go very surface level with with the numbers here
- 29:55and it's like, don't we already have like a bunch of these guys
- 29:58in the league already that kind of fill out this?
- 30:01That's what I'm saying is that I feel like every organization has
- 30:04somebody in the farm. I think probably.
- 30:10I think it's just. A.
- 30:11Baseball situation where anytime somebody gets posted coming over
- 30:17from either Japan, South Korea, they're like.
- 30:20I'd almost rather him stay put so I don't have to deal with the
- 30:25confusions, yeah. I did see that he was where is
- 30:30it was teammates with Hassan Kim.
- 30:37Exhausting. Maybe they're used to it over
- 30:42there. Hassan Kim, Hassan Kim, No,
- 30:45there's not that big of a deal. There's no way.
- 30:47I mean, I'm sure they pronounce it a little bit different than
- 30:49us us American folk, but. Yeah.
- 30:53That still would have to sound awfully similar.
- 30:56No? I don't know.
- 30:58That would lead to some pretty wild confusion.
- 31:02Speaking of Speaking of confusion.
- 31:04I want to put it in Google, see what it says.
- 31:08See what what says in Korean. Hi Seon SE, it's H.
- 31:18HYESEONG. Just make sure the volume's up.
- 31:33Please don't play an ad. Welcome to this pronunciation
- 31:35video. Today we will be focusing on a
- 31:37new word that you might find challenging or intriguing.
- 31:40So let's dive into today's word. Put it up to the mic, which
- 31:43means comet incoming. You talked over it.
- 31:46So we'll put it up to the mic. Nobody can hear it today's.
- 31:48Word Hey song. Which hey song?
- 31:51Comet in Korean. Comet.
- 31:53So let's dive into today's word Hey Song, which means comet Hey
- 31:59Song, Comet Kim. Comet Kim.
- 32:02It's Hey Song again. Hey versus Ha.
- 32:06Well, I'm an American. He's not.
- 32:09They're pronouncing it right. I'm not stupid redneck.
- 32:13Stupid. I'm just going to call it.
- 32:15Call him Comet Kim. I like that.
- 32:18That's way better. Way better way.
- 32:20Comet. Comet Kim.
- 32:22Super cool name. There's a lot of potential
- 32:24there. Yeah, I can see the signs and
- 32:26the shirts already. Yeah.
- 32:28Anyway, let's talk about these, these Juan Soto updates.
- 32:35The last five teams reportedly in the mix, according to John
- 32:41Heyman, which I don't take a, a thing that guy says seriously,
- 32:45but I it's sort of the gist of what we're getting from
- 32:50everybody else. So I'm like, OK, I probably, I
- 32:54mean, it's not, it's not much of A stretch.
- 32:58I couldn't be more done with John Heyman.
- 33:00I'm so out on John Heyman, but I can't stand the guy.
- 33:04The guy rephrases his tweet. Every every day it's the same
- 33:08material. He just, he just swaps the word
- 33:11out. And he flip flops on like
- 33:13anything that has to do with the Yankees.
- 33:15Two weeks ago, he's like, yeah, I'm, I'm, I don't think they're
- 33:17getting them now. He's like, I think their chances
- 33:20are really high. I I'm so done with you.
- 33:23I'm so done with John Heyman. I'll take any other reporter.
- 33:29I'm fully out. John Heyman sucks.
- 33:34He blocks me. I feel like any time we bring up
- 33:38John Heyman, I need to, I need to reshare the story.
- 33:40He blocked me. I forgot.
- 33:41So I'm happy you did. Yeah, he blocked me because he
- 33:46he used the word. What was the word?
- 33:52Full throated in a tweet. And I'm like, John, what is
- 33:56this? That's right.
- 33:58That did get some headline. I was like attention.
- 34:00I was like, John, I understand it's a real word and it's not a
- 34:04typo, but like, is there not? I was like, what?
- 34:07What are we doing here? What are you?
- 34:08Trying to say yeah what? What are we after here?
- 34:11Didn't respond to me and just blocked me and I'm like OK
- 34:13whatever but you? Like there's no, there's no
- 34:17other way to like, put that like you.
- 34:21It's your fault. You sounded like an idiot.
- 34:23We're not connecting dots that aren't.
- 34:26Yeah, we're not just, like making things up.
- 34:29Yeah. Anyway, he said.
- 34:30All five teams, Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Red Sox, Jays remain in
- 34:33Juan Soto Derby and don't assume anyone's a heavy favorite, he
- 34:38has said. Very patient in his selection
- 34:40process, parentheses like who's at bats?
- 34:43Goodwin, John. But his decision is believed
- 34:47within days. Which is weird because we heard,
- 34:54I I've heard. I've heard he's going to wait it
- 34:56out. Well, I've heard it's coming
- 34:58before winter. Winter meetings.
- 35:00Yeah, I, I saw Monday at the latest.
- 35:04So it's like is, is he patient? Is he waiting it out or are we
- 35:08looking at Monday, I'm going to be honest, even sooner.
- 35:11I'm just over this. I'm I'm done with it.
- 35:14I'm over the. The waiting it out, I'm playing
- 35:18it out. I'm I'm over it.
- 35:20No, you know what I'm over is every day you open up your feed,
- 35:24the the contract estimate has gone up, Ken Rosenthal said
- 35:29today. It's.
- 35:30Like 1.3 billion. He could see it at 15 years, 750
- 35:34million. What are we doing?
- 35:36What? Just give him a billion dollars
- 35:38and get it over with. Like if this is where we're
- 35:41headed, like if we're already surpassing Otani's contract And
- 35:44and please people in the comments, spare me on the age
- 35:47thing. I understand that Soto is
- 35:49significantly younger than Otani.
- 35:51That's not the point. The point, The reason I I
- 35:54brought up the comparison between Soto and Otani and that
- 35:58and that quote graphic that has seemingly gone viral on
- 36:00Instagram. People either strongly agree or
- 36:05can't stand a word that I say. Apparently the reason I said
- 36:08that is I said we're pushing Otani money with a guy that
- 36:12can't, is not going to blow away with the speed, can't play
- 36:14defense. And yeah, and I said that people
- 36:18just lost their minds. And I'm like, this has nothing
- 36:22to do with age. This is looking at what Otani
- 36:26can do, assuming he pitches this year, which he's slated to do.
- 36:31And not to mention it's, you look at the income or not the
- 36:36income, but the economy. And we talked about that last
- 36:40time we talked to Otani, the just the economy that he brought
- 36:42over with Japan. It's common business sense that
- 36:46regardless if, if, if Soto is what, 6 years younger, it
- 36:51doesn't matter. You're bringing over an entire
- 36:53economy and you're like the Unicorn of baseball.
- 36:58So the fact that we're talking about a guy like Juan Soto, as
- 37:01good as he is, as much of A generational talent as he is,
- 37:04the fact that we're now talking about him earning more money
- 37:08like it was, it was pushing Otani money.
- 37:10Now the estimate, according to Ken Rosenthal, is is more money,
- 37:14$750 million. And and we've talked about it,
- 37:18he has attributes that don't play well when you start getting
- 37:22to a certain age, when you get above 3233, he's already slow.
- 37:26Now I'm not saying he's he's not slow.
- 37:29He's definitely not fast. Defense is slightly below
- 37:34average. It's not going to get better.
- 37:38So in reality, like I see this is standing all over again, but
- 37:43with potentially less power down the road, we're talking year
- 37:491012 more athletic. That power is going to go down.
- 37:53The ABS are going to remain the same.
- 37:55I think he his eye is going to be his eye.
- 37:57Like he he's always going to have good ABS.
- 38:00He's always going to walk. He's always going to spray it
- 38:03all over the field. I'm not saying he's going to be
- 38:05a bad hitter, but you can't expect the same numbers, you
- 38:13know what I mean? Like I understand what Otani's
- 38:17getting because his attributes are still there.
- 38:19He's older and he's still doing things more athletically, more
- 38:23impressively with an entire country bringing their market as
- 38:30far as viewership goes and merchandise goes.
- 38:34So it's silly to me, man. It's silly, but I can see it
- 38:38now. It's it's January 15th, the new
- 38:43offer is he won't sign until there's a statue outside of the
- 38:47stadium and Steve Cohen steps down from ownership and he now
- 38:51steps in his owner player and golden rule has now gone into
- 38:58effect and he gets to hit 6 * a game having 750 at bats every
- 39:04season and he makes a Billy. That's my new prediction.
- 39:10Ken Rosenthal kind of out on you too, by the way.
- 39:14Yeah, I think it's like that Simpsons meme with the guy
- 39:19that's in the shadow just smoking the cigarette.
- 39:21That's Jeff Passan. He's just waiting.
- 39:23He's. Just going to love Jeff Passan.
- 39:24He is the goat. You know he's the goat.
- 39:28I have my thoughts on Jeff Passan at times, but at the end
- 39:31of the day he. I got nervous when he does his
- 39:33job well the the woge guy from the NBA.
- 39:37Oh yeah, he stepped. Out took the GM job somewhere.
- 39:40I thought we might we just passing.
- 39:41Crazy because they were like, I think we're going to steal
- 39:44passing like for a for a drowning NBA.
- 39:48That product sucks. No shot you tried to put on an
- 39:52NBA game recently. It's horrendous.
- 39:55I've. Heard nothing but terrible
- 39:57things about this cup thing that they were doing.
- 39:59Horrendous. What is that?
- 40:01What is this NASCAR? It's some mid season cup and
- 40:04they paint their all their courts so you turn a game on now
- 40:07it's like. Oh, I saw that too.
- 40:09It it looks like like a colorful backgammon board.
- 40:13It looks insane. That's what baseball is headed
- 40:16for. Manfred Ball just you hold on,
- 40:19you hold on tight. All right, well, that brings us
- 40:23to that brings us to maybe a a new segment that I think we're
- 40:27going to we're going to introduce here.
- 40:31Do you want to, you want to give the people the rundown here as
- 40:33to what we're doing? And the reason I transition
- 40:36from, from what we just talked about is because this is a
- 40:38relevant, this is a relevant quote I I pulled.
- 40:42So go ahead and and share with the people what we're doing
- 40:44here. We are.
- 40:45We are going back in the archives.
- 40:46We are digging deep into the receipts and picking out quotes.
- 40:54One of us have said something in the past.
- 40:57Maybe it's crazy. Maybe it's on point.
- 41:01More often than not, it's going to be wrong, but either way,
- 41:04we're going to pull these quotes out and maybe just do a little a
- 41:10little research based on that. So the inaugural guess that
- 41:16quote, hit me with it. You ready for it?
- 41:20I'm ready. It is like why we have to.
- 41:51Find out who say what's. It called name.
- 41:53What's it called name? What's it called?
- 41:54Name. What's it called?
- 41:55Name whose? Quote was this.
- 41:56Love that. How about that?
- 41:56That's huge. You like that?
- 41:57Is that Is that AI made? No, that was me in my garage.
- 42:00I knew it. All right, guess that quote and
- 42:04it's a little relevant. Like I said, I didn't go for a
- 42:07super like edgy one. We'll we'll get into some weird
- 42:10quotes. Not as edgy as that song.
- 42:13Preach. We've said some weird things
- 42:15over the years, but so. We'll get to, so we'll get to
- 42:19let's. Start a little more relevant,
- 42:21all right? Who said this?
- 42:23Was it me or you? Yeah.
- 42:26This is. I mean, I don't like giving too
- 42:28much praise too early, but Juan Soto is doing things at his age
- 42:32that no one's ever done. He's on pace to be incredible,
- 42:34truly incredible. And so I don't even know if
- 42:37generational talent is a sufficient description.
- 42:40I think it's bigger than that. I think this is possibly a
- 42:43monumental player, but it's kind of a catch 2222, right?
- 42:47If they spend a half a billion dollars on them to stick around,
- 42:50how much money do they have to build around him, Right?
- 42:53So that's got to be part of the thought process for Soto as
- 42:56well. Is that OK?
- 42:57Well, if I say if I do get my dream contract and I stay put,
- 43:01do they have enough pieces that are going to be able to support
- 43:04me? Do they have enough money to get
- 43:06those pieces? Both of those seem like a no.
- 43:09This was from episode 282 of The Frail.
- 43:13Tape. Going back to May 19th, 2022,
- 43:18the episode titled Pay Juan Soto a Billion Dollars.
- 43:21Look at us, look at us. Oh, hit the nail on the head
- 43:30with the quote. Still how that that still holds
- 43:33up. How about that?
- 43:35I'd say based on the song lyrics that aged like like wine.
- 43:42I think I said it. Well done, well done.
- 43:50You. Nailed it.
- 43:51I mean it's that was that was May of 2022 and we're just I
- 43:59think was that I think maybe sarcastically.
- 44:03I I mean I had to I'd have to go back and hear the tone of your
- 44:05voice when you said that or, or just the tone of the
- 44:07conversation. We were talking about that, but
- 44:11we are probably like we're exaggerating a little bit with,
- 44:14you know, we're just throwing around half a billion dollars
- 44:16and here we are talking about 3/4 of a billion dollars two
- 44:20years later. Here we are potentially 150, two
- 44:25$100 million off. That's ridiculous.
- 44:35Analyzing a little bit. I mean, I, I think there I, I
- 44:39think it still holds up because this is my entire argument for
- 44:44any Yankees fans that really want them more than anything is
- 44:48that like they're not in a perfect spot if they do pull
- 44:54this off and they don't have enough money to continue to fill
- 44:59the team around him. In my mind, there's there's
- 45:03really only, well, it depends on the structure, but probably one
- 45:07or two teams that can pull that off.
- 45:11So I think it holds up. I wonder what that was for.
- 45:17Why were we so randomly in on May 19th?
- 45:20What did he do something on May 18th?
- 45:25Did you just do something insane?
- 45:27Was it like a three home run game?
- 45:2922 Would that have been when he got the offer from the
- 45:33Nationals? That that, that could make
- 45:39sense. What was May 19th, 2022?
- 45:48What day of the week was that? Oh, you know what this may have
- 45:55been? I think this was.
- 45:57Was Thursday. That's that's, yeah, I think
- 46:03that is what we were talking about.
- 46:04That's when he rejected the fifteen, $440 million extension
- 46:08by the Nationals during twenty. Yeah, that that's exactly what
- 46:11that was about. In May.
- 46:15Yeah, because this it was coming up to the to the trade deadline
- 46:20and you know, a couple months. How much did he turn down from
- 46:22the trade deadline, 15440? And I think our whole thing was
- 46:31like, oh, Juan, Soda deserves more than that.
- 46:33But not 750, you know? Yeah, no, I think, I think 600
- 46:41is, I mean, trust me, it is definitely numbers that are much
- 46:45lower that I think are adequate for human beings, but.
- 46:50In terms of value. Yeah, I think 600 is enough.
- 46:57Let's just just call it there. Good first quote.
- 47:02Good first quote. Thank you.
- 47:04That's a good pull. Appreciate it.
- 47:07It's a good pull. Very timely.
- 47:10Great song. How's the throat?
- 47:15You OK? You were wailing.
- 47:17You were you were getting after it.
- 47:19Yeah, that was definitely me for sure.
- 47:21No, definitely. You want to run it back just one
- 47:23more time since it's just, since it made us let.
- 47:25People know. Yeah, I like you want.
- 47:27To run it back, yeah. We have to find out whose quote
- 47:59was this. All right, important.
- 48:00To anyone wearing Airpods, I'm sure.
- 48:02I'm looking forward to playing that.
- 48:05I'm looking forward to playing that.
- 48:07That's a good one. I'm up.
- 48:09I'm up next week. You.
- 48:11Got some quote and I'll have to guess.
- 48:14Big fan. Quote was this somebody said
- 48:17what Creed album? Yep, no, that's definitely
- 48:23Creed. That is definitely Creed for
- 48:26sure. That was me.
- 48:28That was Creed featuring me. I was I was there when they
- 48:31recorded that actually. All right, let's let's let's
- 48:34call it there. Let's get out of there.
- 48:36We'll see you guys Monday, Barney.
- 48:42I sure hope nothing happens over the weekend.
- 48:44If if the whole Monday thing for Soto is true.
- 48:48Oh, talk about perfect timing. We'll just record later that
- 48:51night, but if not, we'll play it by ear.
- 48:54I guess you may catch a surprise little emergency pod.
- 48:58I don't know. You heard?
- 48:59What's going to happen? It's going to be January 15th.
- 49:02The statue is halfway done. For a billion dollars.
- 49:04Yeah, in a new ownership spot. Looking forward to it.
- 49:07Don't go chasing curveballs, guys.
- 49:09We love you all and as always, looking forward to talking more
- 49:11baseball with you guys soon. Until next time, stay filthy.
