- 1:19Speaker 1: just sign up for free to get it by simply
- 1:21Speaker 1: going sports radio kjar dot com myself. Ever a bits
- 1:26Speaker 1: you al Kadiski with us in just a bits is
- 1:29Speaker 1: we're ready to get to head coach Lane Lambert and
- 1:31Speaker 1: his comments after a Tuesday practice the crack in handling this.
- 1:35Speaker 1: We have plenty of off days in between after a
- 1:38Speaker 1: last last Saturday against Edmonton and then not getting back
- 1:42Speaker 1: after it until Thursday facing the same team, so plenty
- 1:46Speaker 1: of downtime and plenty of practice time to take advantage
- 1:50Speaker 1: how the Kraken did. So we'll hear from Lane Lambert,
- 1:53Speaker 1: plus additional injury updates and also our conversation with cracking
- 1:57Speaker 1: GM Jason Botterrel. This is gonna be a fun one.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You won't want to miss this case we get deeper
- 2:02Speaker 1: into the show. We talked with Jason Bottrell of course
- 2:05Speaker 1: on the Kraken direction under Lane Lambert at this point
- 2:08Speaker 1: of the season, how structure is their aid. Getting deeper
- 2:12Speaker 1: into the season, more trade market talk potentially, more Berkeley
- 2:16Speaker 1: Catton World Junior's talk, potentially, the goaltending situation, prospect development,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and much more. Jason Botterrell joining us here in just
- 2:26Speaker 1: a bit well to kind of get right to it
- 2:28Speaker 1: as far as the end result, the Kraken dropping a
- 2:30Speaker 1: three to two loss to Dallas this last Wednesday, one
- 2:34Speaker 1: day before Thanksgiving, and then came out of it with
- 2:37Speaker 1: a matinee affair on Saturday with a four to nothing
- 2:40Speaker 1: loss to the Edmonton Oilers, which also featured an emotionally
- 2:44Speaker 1: fueled contest latter portion of the game, but Edmonton pulling
- 2:49Speaker 1: away after the Krakens squandered plenty of power play time,
- 2:52Speaker 1: including a five on three in the latter portion of
- 2:57Speaker 1: period one. Ryan nuchen Hopkins, in his first game back,
- 3:00Speaker 1: had a multi point game, and Andrea Saddle with Connor
- 3:04Speaker 1: McDavid the usual suspects, winding up on the scoreesheet, giving
- 3:07Speaker 1: Stewart Skinner a twenty six save shutout well the Krack
- 3:11Speaker 1: and responding with spirited practices to open the week at
- 3:15Speaker 1: Crack in Community ice Plex, additionally with a pretty creative
- 3:19Speaker 1: twist involving the use of small area games, while we
- 3:23Speaker 1: learned a little bit more about how young players are
- 3:25Speaker 1: fitting into the lineup, plus injury updates with Jared mccannon,
- 3:29Speaker 1: who left the ice early in practice on Tuesday, plus
- 3:33Speaker 1: Mason Marchmen and Brandon Montour, who have not been seen
- 3:37Speaker 1: at all this week. Montour we learned nursing and aggravated ailment,
- 3:41Speaker 1: while Mason Marchmen after Monday was held out due to
- 3:45Speaker 1: maintenance day reasons. After practice, Lane Lambert, sharing more beginning
- 3:50Speaker 1: with the update for the players on the shelf on
- 3:53Speaker 1: the cracking side.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Said Canny, yeah, sure you see the care here.
- 3:57Speaker 5: He'll be Yeah, he'll be fine as far as I
- 3:59Speaker 5: know right now.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Anyway, Marchmoth and minds as yesterday.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Yeah, just what I would say is day to day. Certainly,
- 4:09Speaker 5: I'm expecting Money to be back for the Edmonton game,
- 4:13Speaker 5: and I'm hopeful that Marchmen will be as.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Well, and so small air games going on at the Friends.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So once you take away from how the guys were really.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Getting engaged in all and how that kind of helps
- 4:23Speaker 4: be directionally.
- 4:24Speaker 5: O, well, I mean we uh, you know, we you
- 4:27Speaker 5: have three days of practice in a row. You know,
- 4:30Speaker 5: you break it up a little bit by doing something
- 4:33Speaker 5: different today. But at the end of the day, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 5: I think it's important we focused on again tight area
- 4:40Speaker 5: stuff and making sure that we can uh you know,
- 4:43Speaker 5: make plays in tight spaces, tight areas and and I
- 4:46Speaker 5: thought we accomplished that today. It was an offensive day
- 4:49Speaker 5: to a certain degree, but it was also a competitive day.
- 4:53Speaker 5: We drafted teams before and the guys, uh, you know,
- 4:57Speaker 5: the guys competed with each other, so it was good.
- 5:00Speaker 3: There were the team captains for.
- 5:02Speaker 1: The draft, right and Kat and how.
- 5:08Speaker 5: It was a back and forth. Yeah, and they knew
- 5:10Speaker 5: what the practice was going to be so they could
- 5:12Speaker 5: draft their teams accordingly.
- 5:14Speaker 3: How does it help the guys.
- 5:16Speaker 1: You keep talking about offense, but to have more offensive offensively,
- 5:19Speaker 1: mind your toils and finish.
- 5:20Speaker 2: That she got to see those pucks game.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, I thought,
- 5:25Speaker 5: let's let's be clear, our goaltenders did a great job today.
- 5:27Speaker 5: They were under siege the whole time, tired, so they
- 5:31Speaker 5: did a great job.
- 5:32Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean, we just.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Have to we have to continue to to do things
- 5:36Speaker 5: like that. It's great to always see I mean as
- 5:38Speaker 5: a player, whether it be practice or games. Practice sets
- 5:41Speaker 5: you up for games and so you know, to see
- 5:43Speaker 5: the pucks going the net. It's a good thing.
- 5:45Speaker 6: I won't ask you their names if you don't want to,
- 5:47Speaker 6: but to anyone stand out or surprise even should know, practice.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I thought, you know, for the most part, I thought
- 5:54Speaker 5: we you know, we had quite a few goals, so
- 5:57Speaker 5: and you know, you're looking at different things. Obviously we're
- 6:00Speaker 5: zero for three in the shootout and we've scored two
- 6:02Speaker 5: on I think maybe eleven shots. You're looking for, you know,
- 6:08Speaker 5: anything or anybody that can potentially, you know, maybe.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Surprise you, like you say.
- 6:14Speaker 5: So, you know, it's a good exercise for us to do,
- 6:16Speaker 5: and we'll continue to do it a little bit more language.
- 6:18Speaker 4: You ever put a defender out shootout?
- 6:21Speaker 3: Yeah? Why not?
- 6:22Speaker 5: You know, there's there's plenty of offensive defensemen that can
- 6:26Speaker 5: take a shootout for sure.
- 6:27Speaker 2: When we talk.
- 6:28Speaker 3: About developing offense, and we keep asking about this.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Player, but Brickley Catton does look like he's taking steps
- 6:34Speaker 4: every single game, even though the pod hasn't gone in it.
- 6:37Speaker 4: What details of his game are you seeing come into better.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And better focus.
- 6:42Speaker 5: Just his positioning, where he's at, where he's at on
- 6:44Speaker 5: the ice, the understanding from him of where he needs
- 6:47Speaker 5: to be in order to get available get pucks in
- 6:52Speaker 5: space so he's able to use his positioning, and then
- 6:55Speaker 5: an understanding when he's coming up the ice on rushes.
- 6:58Speaker 5: You know, things are way different than they are in
- 7:00Speaker 5: the Western Hockey League. I can tell you that they're
- 7:02Speaker 5: different than they are in the American Hockey League. Care
- 7:05Speaker 5: and you know, he's a bright kid. You don't necessarily
- 7:09Speaker 5: have to tell him something twice. And you know there's
- 7:13Speaker 5: things that he's figuring out on his own as well.
- 7:15Speaker 5: So you know, I just see I just see him
- 7:18Speaker 5: continuing to grow. I know he hasn't scored yet. That
- 7:22Speaker 5: I mean, obviously we'd love it. That isn't really bothering me.
- 7:27Speaker 5: I think that when he does, I think they're gonna
- 7:29Speaker 5: come in bunches. To be honest with you, I.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Talked to Hims about some conversations he's had with Berkeley,
- 7:34Speaker 4: just about keeping that confidence.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Does he's seeing confidence in this game?
- 7:37Speaker 5: Mm hm?
- 7:37Speaker 4: Do you have intentional conversations with Berkeley or do you
- 7:40Speaker 4: just let him.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Come and continue to grow?
- 7:42Speaker 4: No.
- 7:42Speaker 5: I talked to Berkeley, you know, and again, like a
- 7:48Speaker 5: young player in the league, I was the same. You know,
- 7:51Speaker 5: it's tough when you're not scoring. But I don't see
- 7:53Speaker 5: him as lacking confidence. So I don't see him as
- 7:56Speaker 5: you know, turning, you know, getting rid of the pock,
- 7:58Speaker 5: so to speak. He wants that puck and for me,
- 8:01Speaker 5: it's only a matter of time.
- 8:02Speaker 3: For him Lang, what.
- 8:03Speaker 7: Is a stretch a practice at time? Off to these
- 8:07Speaker 7: guys to reset a bit, realize that you have a
- 8:10Speaker 7: promist credit so far to go.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Yeah, no, you know what, that's a great point by you.
- 8:16Speaker 5: I appreciate that because we talked about that as a team,
- 8:19Speaker 5: just where we're at. You know, you sometimes you get
- 8:22Speaker 5: so lost and focused in the last game or two. Like,
- 8:25Speaker 5: to be honest with you, Dallas, I thought we played
- 8:27Speaker 5: a great game. I thought we could have won that
- 8:29Speaker 5: hockey game Edmonton. I don't think any of us were
- 8:31Speaker 5: happy with the Edmonton game, and they brought their a game.
- 8:35Speaker 5: You know, there are two big guys were going and
- 8:38Speaker 5: you know it was what it was. We spent too
- 8:40Speaker 5: much time on our zone and all that stuff. But
- 8:42Speaker 5: sometimes you can lose lose sight of where you're at
- 8:45Speaker 5: based on just a you know, a most recent and
- 8:48Speaker 5: you know it's kind of what have you done for
- 8:49Speaker 5: me lately? I get that, But at the same time,
- 8:52Speaker 5: you know, I think for us to get back to
- 8:54Speaker 5: practicing and to have some conversations about where we're at
- 8:58Speaker 5: and where we want to go, and you know, where
- 9:01Speaker 5: we need to improve and continue improving and be able
- 9:04Speaker 5: to work on those things on the ice as opposed
- 9:06Speaker 5: to just talking about them, say in the film room
- 9:09Speaker 5: or whatever. When you when you've got a schedule as
- 9:11Speaker 5: hectic as we've had, and we actually have a hectic
- 9:14Speaker 5: schedule coming up, like we're just going to play a
- 9:15Speaker 5: play play, so we've got to find a way to
- 9:17Speaker 5: fit a little bit more practice in. But it's a
- 9:20Speaker 5: it's good that you brought that up because they have
- 9:23Speaker 5: put themselves in a good position to this point. We've
- 9:25Speaker 5: worked hard, they've been hard to play against, and we
- 9:28Speaker 5: just have to, you know, continue to grow on the
- 9:30Speaker 5: offensive side and be harder to play against.
- 9:32Speaker 1: There, Plaine is Yanni has been in and out of
- 9:34Speaker 1: the lineup.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Where is this game at right now? And what are
- 9:37Speaker 3: you looking for?
- 9:38Speaker 8: Wants to get back in more.
- 9:39Speaker 5: On a game by game base, Yeah, you know Yanni.
- 9:42Speaker 5: He one thing about Yanni, he wants the puck as well,
- 9:45Speaker 5: and he competes. You know, if you look at his
- 9:47Speaker 5: last couple of games, he had three shots in the Island,
- 9:50Speaker 5: he had three shots on goal. I believe in Detroit
- 9:52Speaker 5: as well, you know, And with Yanni it's it's you know,
- 9:56Speaker 5: for him, it's a little bit of just opportunity number.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Where does he fit in terms of where does that
- 10:03Speaker 5: fourth line fit kind of thing if that's where he goes.
- 10:05Speaker 5: And you know, Marchminton, Schwartz, you know, have been you know,
- 10:09Speaker 5: up on those top two lines. Jan He's gonna be
- 10:11Speaker 5: a you know, a top six player in this league someday,
- 10:14Speaker 5: but he's got to start somewhere. And I've loved the
- 10:16Speaker 5: way he comes to practice every day. I've loved the
- 10:18Speaker 5: way he's competed, you know. And he's a guy who
- 10:21Speaker 5: can score. So with us lacking a little bit of
- 10:24Speaker 5: production here obviously, you know, we're looking for him to
- 10:27Speaker 5: put the buck in the.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Back of the net.
- 10:28Speaker 1: It's tight eleven seven and six for the crack end
- 10:32Speaker 1: twenty eight points right now in the second wildcard spot,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and they're one point ahead Chicago, Edmonton and Utah the
- 10:41Speaker 1: crack and also one point back of San Jose waking
- 10:43Speaker 1: up here today on Tuesday. All right, those awards from
- 10:46Speaker 1: crackenhead coach Laine Lambert coming out of practice early year
- 10:49Speaker 1: today and I think coming out of karaoke right now,
- 10:51Speaker 1: they're all done. Everett fits you al Kadisky. We've got
- 10:55Speaker 1: to incorporate more of these openers now for the radio
- 10:59Speaker 1: show that was bor relying thirty two thoughts as not
- 11:01Speaker 1: to steal, not to steal. But you know, I think
- 11:05Speaker 1: we're kind of, you know, bordering on some new frontier.
- 11:07Speaker 1: I don't know if we're ready yet here for a cracking,
- 11:09Speaker 1: cracking weekly karaoke, but you have pipes a lot better
- 11:14Speaker 1: than me as far as singing. You might be onto something.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Stay ready, we stay ready for some cracking karaoke.
- 11:20Speaker 7: I mean, you find the right place on the road
- 11:23Speaker 7: with us and you might just get some cracking karaoke from.
- 11:26Speaker 3: A man ever over here.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Hey, there's an auction item right there, cracking road trip.
- 11:31Speaker 4: We're not gonna pay for you to come, but if
- 11:33Speaker 4: you find yourselves in a city on and off day,
- 11:36Speaker 4: we'll take it to a karaoke spot and we'll see
- 11:39Speaker 4: there you go.
- 11:39Speaker 1: If anybody, if anybody is listening here and either knows
- 11:43Speaker 1: James Stuckey, one of the on the Cracking Equipment staff,
- 11:47Speaker 1: or knew him back from his time with the Everett
- 11:49Speaker 1: Silver Tips, you have got to ask him as far
- 11:53Speaker 1: as his go to karaoke playlist. I was frightened for
- 11:56Speaker 1: years to do karaoke, and he finally got it out
- 12:00Speaker 1: of me on a road trip one year with the
- 12:02Speaker 1: Silver Tips. That's the influence of James Stuckey.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Yeah, but he's got his go to though.
- 12:08Speaker 7: Karaoke go tos are different than your favorite songs, right.
- 12:13Speaker 7: I have a lot of favorite songs that I would
- 12:14Speaker 7: never dare attempting to sing on a microphone. So you
- 12:19Speaker 7: have to know your limitations, and unfortunately I have not
- 12:22Speaker 7: done it enough to know what my limitations are. But
- 12:25Speaker 7: you know what they say, Dance like no one's watching,
- 12:29Speaker 7: sing like no one's listening.
- 12:31Speaker 4: And nothing is worse in karaoke than the one person
- 12:35Speaker 4: who's actually good at singing. Like it's one thing to
- 12:38Speaker 4: have stage presence and have a control over the crowd,
- 12:41Speaker 4: which what you need. I don't want you, like as
- 12:44Speaker 4: a finalist on Seattle's Idol, right, like.
- 12:48Speaker 3: You're supposed to be.
- 12:48Speaker 1: It kills the whole purpose of it, right, it's for entertainment.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I don't I don't want you if you had a record.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Deal at a certain point, if you have a CD out,
- 12:58Speaker 4: No do they say his.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Album You're out here a record?
- 13:03Speaker 3: Yeah, if you have a record thank you.
- 13:04Speaker 4: If you have an eight track tape out here floating around,
- 13:07Speaker 4: I don't want.
- 13:07Speaker 3: You a karaoke right.
- 13:09Speaker 7: There's a there's a place up in ken Moore, and
- 13:11Speaker 7: I have not been there yet. I've heard about it.
- 13:13Speaker 7: But the worse you are, the more the crowd cheers
- 13:16Speaker 7: you want. Yeah, they are encouraging you to keep it going.
- 13:19Speaker 3: And I love that.
- 13:20Speaker 4: There's a speet little hidden speakeasy in Vegas that I
- 13:24Speaker 4: wandered into.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Last year by mistake, and they were doing.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Live band karaoke, and uh, I didn't have an enough
- 13:32Speaker 4: course light in me to.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Get up there and do it.
- 13:34Speaker 3: But I was like, I gotta want to, I gotta
- 13:38Speaker 3: want to do it. Want to do it.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Also, if anybody wants to peek behind the curtain.
- 13:46Speaker 2: You know the words.
- 13:57Speaker 1: We're just gonna end the show now, aren't we. Let's
- 14:02Speaker 1: drop Mike walk off stage.
- 14:03Speaker 3: The banter has now ended.
- 14:07Speaker 1: If anybody, I mean, I think I think we should
- 14:09Speaker 1: should should should just end it right here. Jason Botterol
- 14:11Speaker 1: will talk to you next week. It's all good, it's
- 14:13Speaker 1: all good. Sorry you've been bumped out for karaoke. It
- 14:15Speaker 1: takes me back also to I think one of my
- 14:18Speaker 1: favorite team bonding initiatives I've seen in my previous stops,
- 14:23Speaker 1: and was actually on a team bus rookie karaoke. The
- 14:27Speaker 1: thing is. The thing is you have to put earbuds
- 14:30Speaker 1: in your ears, and you have to take the random
- 14:34Speaker 1: song that one of the captains assigned to you, and
- 14:37Speaker 1: then you got to sing it with no audible music
- 14:42Speaker 1: track on the bus. It's just you sing an a cappella,
- 14:45Speaker 1: but you've got the sound in your ear So can
- 14:48Speaker 1: you imagine twenty of your teammates rooting you on because
- 14:52Speaker 1: you're just falling all over the place a cappella, but
- 14:56Speaker 1: yet you at least have the comforting silence of the
- 14:59Speaker 1: earbuds with the with with the actual audio track to
- 15:03Speaker 1: guide you along.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Phones are no phones like this?
- 15:06Speaker 7: Is this something that's allowed to be recorded because I
- 15:08Speaker 7: can tell you thirty years ago no one had cameras.
- 15:11Speaker 2: On the bus.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Oh yeah, now everyone's got one in their pocket.
- 15:14Speaker 1: If I were to record this on the team bus,
- 15:16Speaker 1: I would have been kicked off for the rest of
- 15:18Speaker 1: my entire career from that previous stop. This is a
- 15:21Speaker 1: coming up the ladder type of story. Guys. That was
- 15:24Speaker 1: Thanksgiving our first show.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Since then, yeah, good fat and happy.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Turkey for I think turkey for you, Everett, turkey and
- 15:35Speaker 1: ham turkey and ham turkey for me, Al did turkey.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Matter of fact, you had an amazing standwich you put
- 15:41Speaker 1: in our group chat yes the day after, and I
- 15:44Speaker 1: responded with the Ross Geller gift from the TV show Friends,
- 15:49Speaker 1: because it looked like the quintessential moistmaker. Everything was on
- 15:53Speaker 1: that lup of bread.
- 15:55Speaker 7: Everything that was on the Thanksgiving table was on that
- 15:58Speaker 7: bread except for a rugul. You throw the lit little
- 16:00Speaker 7: ruggle in there, just to give it that peppery taste
- 16:02Speaker 7: that it gives you two out side mayo on both sides.
- 16:07Speaker 7: There's no mayo in the thanks Giving table, but everything
- 16:10Speaker 7: else on the table between those two slices of bread fantastic.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Now I did steak. I did mac and cheese. We
- 16:17Speaker 1: had roast and sweet potatoes. And for any of you
- 16:20Speaker 1: asking why do steak, well, here's the thing. I don't
- 16:23Speaker 1: mind turkey steak.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Yes, thank you.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Go right to the point, go right to the point.
- 16:28Speaker 1: But you don't have to have turkey to enjoy Thanksgiving.
- 16:30Speaker 1: You know, you don't have to even have ham to
- 16:32Speaker 1: enjoy Thanksgiving. It's what suits your fancy at the table.
- 16:36Speaker 1: So I mean, for me, I don't mind turkey. But
- 16:39Speaker 1: my ten year old spoke up and said, can we
- 16:40Speaker 1: have steak, which then led me and my wife to
- 16:43Speaker 1: having a conversation. I like steak, Amy loves steak. My
- 16:48Speaker 1: ten year old want a steak in the first place,
- 16:50Speaker 1: and my seven year old will try steak. Bottom line, done, boom,
- 16:54Speaker 1: everybody was happy. And then that goes right into my
- 16:57Speaker 1: dad's mac and cheese very next day for leftover, very
- 17:00Speaker 1: next day after that. And now I'm trying to work
- 17:02Speaker 1: off the five pounds I've gained roughly in about probably
- 17:04Speaker 1: the last to three and a half days or so.
- 17:05Speaker 1: But I mean, hey, calaries don't count for the holidays
- 17:08Speaker 1: or for Thanksgiving.
- 17:09Speaker 7: Can I had this conversation with Bob Condor today. I said,
- 17:12Speaker 7: I said, you know that you got Thanksgiving them three
- 17:14Speaker 7: or four days after that, and then you have this
- 17:15Speaker 7: period of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Ware You're gonna
- 17:19Speaker 7: you're gonna have to make some ground up, Mike. You're
- 17:21Speaker 7: gonna have to get on that bike or do whatever,
- 17:24Speaker 7: use those crack and running shoes to burneth and run
- 17:27Speaker 7: in the quick way athletics.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I've been putting the Brooks shoes on here. I'm getting
- 17:30Speaker 1: the work garage, workouts going coming. I'm just trying to
- 17:34Speaker 1: obtain net zero for cavalry gain by the end of that.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I'm not trying to gain more muscle. I'm just trying
- 17:40Speaker 1: to get like a net zero positive result as much
- 17:43Speaker 1: as I can. Anyway, all right, onto hockey. Last week, Yeah, finally,
- 17:47Speaker 1: let's let's get on to it. Loss against Dallas and
- 17:50Speaker 1: by the thinnest of margins, a lot of slav kolo
- 17:53Speaker 1: Chonak game winning goal or else, I believe that game
- 17:56Speaker 1: is going to overtime again. And then Edmonton and fortunately
- 18:00Speaker 1: the Oilers pulled away in the second period and the
- 18:03Speaker 1: result as a clunker and a four nothing loss. So
- 18:06Speaker 1: it leads us here to ask, at this point of
- 18:09Speaker 1: the season, after we talked about how real this team
- 18:12Speaker 1: is Thanksgiving check point, how much did that loss against
- 18:16Speaker 1: Dallas and Edmonton maybe swing the pendulum?
- 18:21Speaker 4: Ah, you know, I don't think it swung it that much.
- 18:25Speaker 4: I think for me, you know, Lanes even said it,
- 18:29Speaker 4: You're not gonna win every game. You're not gonna go
- 18:32Speaker 4: eighty two and zero. You're gonna lose some games. He
- 18:35Speaker 4: even said, you're going to have the odd stinker. We've
- 18:38Speaker 4: talked on this program before about you're gonna have stinkers.
- 18:42Speaker 4: I remember an old coach said, you're never guaranteed to
- 18:46Speaker 4: blow someone out, but you're almost always guaranteed to get
- 18:50Speaker 4: blown out at least once a season. You just have
- 18:53Speaker 4: to time those stinkers pretty well. And I think for
- 18:58Speaker 4: the Edmonton game in particular, this is now the third
- 19:02Speaker 4: year in a row Edmonton has started at five hundred
- 19:05Speaker 4: just above, just below.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Through twenty five or so games, they've not been very good. Well,
- 19:09Speaker 3: what's happened? They've gone off to the Cup final two
- 19:12Speaker 3: years in a row. Right, So, whenever you've got two
- 19:14Speaker 3: of the best players in.
- 19:15Speaker 4: The world and the exhorted cast of characters that they do,
- 19:19Speaker 4: you can't take them too lightly. I think the Dallas
- 19:21Speaker 4: game was summed up as Lane Lambert said, and a
- 19:23Speaker 4: couple of plays, a couple of mistakes that you just
- 19:25Speaker 4: can't make so you know you're okay with the effort
- 19:29Speaker 4: and the Oiler game or the Stars game. The Oiler game,
- 19:32Speaker 4: for my taking was a bit too sloppy. I thought
- 19:35Speaker 4: there was a lot of muff passes, a lot of
- 19:37Speaker 4: again too selective and they're shot taking and all of that.
- 19:43Speaker 4: So you know, this is I think you put Saturday
- 19:46Speaker 4: behind you. You pick up and learn from the lessons
- 19:50Speaker 4: from last Wednesday against Dallas, and now you're about to
- 19:53Speaker 4: start a stretch of eleven games in nineteen twenty some
- 19:57Speaker 4: odd days starting on Thursday with Emonton again.
- 20:00Speaker 3: So you can't afford to dwell too much. Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 7: I don't want to dwell too much either. If there's
- 20:07Speaker 7: something I'm dwelling on, it's probably the special teams. Uh
- 20:10Speaker 7: you know, zero and five in the in the Dallas
- 20:13Speaker 7: game and oh and six in the Edmonton game. That
- 20:15Speaker 7: that that's concerning a little bit. But uh I know that. Uh,
- 20:19Speaker 7: I know that's not my thing to be concerned about.
- 20:22Speaker 7: The team is concerned about that. I'd like to see
- 20:24Speaker 7: some improvement there. But I think that you also saw
- 20:26Speaker 7: some fantastic defense defensive games.
- 20:28Speaker 3: From from Seattle. Certainly in the Dallas game. It was
- 20:32Speaker 3: too bad that.
- 20:33Speaker 7: The winning goal happened there late in the third period
- 20:36Speaker 7: or in the third period. When you watch the replay,
- 20:38Speaker 7: you see Adam Larson just like sacrifice his body to
- 20:42Speaker 7: get in front of that puck and it just misses
- 20:45Speaker 7: his left knee by a half of an inch, and
- 20:47Speaker 7: of course now he's become the screen and it finds
- 20:50Speaker 7: the back of the net. But his intent was to
- 20:52Speaker 7: stop that puck from every from ever getting to the net,
- 20:54Speaker 7: which he does so many times every game, and unfortunately
- 20:57Speaker 7: that one got by him.
- 20:58Speaker 3: So that was that was just the pointing to see
- 21:00Speaker 3: how that ended.
- 21:01Speaker 7: But the defense of the team really stood to me
- 21:04Speaker 7: in that Dallas game. And you're right that the Edmonton
- 21:06Speaker 7: game chopped that one up. With the six to one
- 21:09Speaker 7: loss to San Jose, a stinker of a game. You
- 21:11Speaker 7: put that one away and you go back to work
- 21:13Speaker 7: again against Edmonton this week.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Because I go back here to the five on five goals,
- 21:18Speaker 1: which again the Kraken have been so good at with
- 21:21Speaker 1: maintaining and regulating as well. Thirty six they have allowed
- 21:25Speaker 1: all season long, and guests who they are tied with
- 21:29Speaker 1: for best in the league. That would be the ten
- 21:32Speaker 1: ton Wagon in the Colorado Avalanche. They got superstar power,
- 21:37Speaker 1: but they also know how to defend, which leads us
- 21:40Speaker 1: now onto the penalty kill. It is last in the
- 21:43Speaker 1: NHL as of Tuesday, December second. Guys, what do we
- 21:46Speaker 1: make out of it?
- 21:49Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 21:49Speaker 7: I mean this has been a strong part to this
- 21:51Speaker 7: team in past seasons. You know, you even saw us
- 21:55Speaker 7: offense get generated out of it sometimes with breakaway opportunities.
- 21:58Speaker 7: And for some reason over the last you know, a
- 22:01Speaker 7: half dozen games, maybe ten games, it's fallen flat a
- 22:04Speaker 7: little bit and gone backwards a little bit.
- 22:07Speaker 3: It's tough to.
- 22:07Speaker 7: Put your finger on one thing. If I was to guess,
- 22:11Speaker 7: or if I was to guess, if I was to
- 22:12Speaker 7: coach the penalty kill up, I would say attacking the
- 22:16Speaker 7: offense in the cracking end of the ice a little
- 22:19Speaker 7: quicker is what I see, and I know you see
- 22:22Speaker 7: it too.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Up top.
- 22:23Speaker 7: There is what I see when we play teams that
- 22:26Speaker 7: are very good on the penalty kill, Like those bump
- 22:29Speaker 7: passes as they're happening, there's a stick in the lane, yeah, right,
- 22:33Speaker 7: that puck that gets moved back to the point. You
- 22:36Speaker 7: know he wants to go demand demand, So the guy
- 22:38Speaker 7: on the far side is attacking that demen as the
- 22:41Speaker 7: puck's getting there.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Attacking those puck.
- 22:44Speaker 7: Carriers before they're getting the puck or as they're getting
- 22:47Speaker 7: the puck gives them no time to make a decision.
- 22:50Speaker 7: I think that that's that in blocking shots are the
- 22:52Speaker 7: two biggest things you can affect when you're improving your
- 22:55Speaker 7: penalty kill.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so too.
- 22:57Speaker 4: And I think what, at least in the the Oiler
- 23:00Speaker 4: game that stood out to me was just the quickness
- 23:03Speaker 4: in which Edmonton moves the puck around.
- 23:06Speaker 3: I think that is what speed on both the.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Power play and the PK in the last handful of games,
- 23:14Speaker 4: I think is really what stood out to me. On
- 23:16Speaker 4: the power play side of it, Crackinger, oh, for the
- 23:19Speaker 4: last fourteen on the.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Power play three for twenty nine of their last ten games.
- 23:24Speaker 4: You're you're not getting the puck around fast enough, You're
- 23:28Speaker 4: not zipping it, You're you're not catching clean passes, you're
- 23:31Speaker 4: not getting in the one timer position, You're having to
- 23:34Speaker 4: catch passes in your feet and all of that. And
- 23:37Speaker 4: as all of us know watching this game, I mean,
- 23:40Speaker 4: this is a game of milliseconds, not seconds. Milliseconds, right,
- 23:44Speaker 4: And I think on the other side of that, the
- 23:46Speaker 4: kracking on the PK side, and again from from a
- 23:49Speaker 4: press box two hundred foot view in the sky, it's
- 23:52Speaker 4: a lot easier for us to see because the game
- 23:54Speaker 4: slows down.
- 23:56Speaker 3: It's it's I think.
- 23:57Speaker 4: We're being there, the Crackinger being beaten by other team
- 24:00Speaker 4: speeds their ability to zip the puck around. The crackt
- 24:04Speaker 4: have been finding themselves turned down turned around quite a bit.
- 24:07Speaker 4: It's not necessarily that they're out of position, it just
- 24:12Speaker 4: takes them a fraction of a second too long to
- 24:15Speaker 4: get into position to be able to disrupt a lot
- 24:18Speaker 4: of what other teams want to do.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Well.
- 24:20Speaker 7: Let's remember too, the last four games they've faced the first, second,
- 24:25Speaker 7: and third best power plays in the league. So if
- 24:28Speaker 7: there was a four game chunk on the on the
- 24:31Speaker 7: schedule where you say, hey, crack and penalty kill might
- 24:33Speaker 7: slide backwards, I would say probably the a four game
- 24:36Speaker 7: schedule where they're going to face the first, second, and
- 24:39Speaker 7: third best power plays in the league, it's likely to happen.
- 24:42Speaker 7: So now the next question is is can they get
- 24:44Speaker 7: back going the other way over this next stretch between
- 24:47Speaker 7: now and Christmas.
- 24:48Speaker 4: And against against the Islanders two four, six, eight nine,
- 24:51Speaker 4: the Krakens snapped a nine game power play or I guess,
- 24:56Speaker 4: a nine game PK drought where they allowed a power
- 25:00Speaker 4: play in at least nine straight games they were zero
- 25:04Speaker 4: for zero or.
- 25:05Speaker 3: They were two for two.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Rather against the Islanders they were one for one. Against
- 25:11Speaker 4: the Dallas Stars. But now they were zero for two
- 25:14Speaker 4: against Edmonton. So after back to back games of not
- 25:17Speaker 4: allowing a power play goal, you allowed too. So you
- 25:21Speaker 4: now have allowed eleven power play goals in your last
- 25:26Speaker 4: what is this twelve thirteen fourteen games, So that I
- 25:31Speaker 4: thought's not good.
- 25:33Speaker 1: I want to touch on something that happened late in
- 25:35Speaker 1: the Edmonton game, and it first basically is a whole
- 25:40Speaker 1: recap of what was a very very snarly game that
- 25:45Speaker 1: was building up over and over time, and eventually Freddie
- 25:47Speaker 1: Gudreaux Connor Clattenberg dropped the mits. That was a pretty
- 25:50Speaker 1: short lived fight, and you give Clattenberg a pretty big edge,
- 25:53Speaker 1: you know, I think admittedly so. And then Kartier had
- 25:57Speaker 1: a pretty good tilt as well. Not too long after
- 25:59Speaker 1: that a lanted some pretty impressive punches. But all of
- 26:02Speaker 1: this had seemed began to boil on the Mason Marchmint
- 26:06Speaker 1: hit on Darnell Nurse, Adam Henrik, it seemed as if
- 26:11Speaker 1: tried to go after him. There was no no, no
- 26:14Speaker 1: fight happening after that. Then Leon dry Settle goes after
- 26:18Speaker 1: march Mint second period and put a little bit too
- 26:21Speaker 1: much I was, I should say a little bit too
- 26:24Speaker 1: many exclamation points on the hit and then got nailed
- 26:26Speaker 1: for elbowing. But this is where I think when you
- 26:30Speaker 1: have a game and it kind of like leaves me
- 26:32Speaker 1: here in a bit of a throwback from ten to
- 26:34Speaker 1: fifteen years ago, when a score like that is lopsided,
- 26:38Speaker 1: that's when scores on the ice tend to get settled.
- 26:42Speaker 1: We had two fights happen out of that. So would
- 26:45Speaker 1: it be surprising or not surprising to see more of
- 26:49Speaker 1: this carry over into Thursday.
- 26:52Speaker 3: I don't think so. I mean, I definitely think that
- 26:55Speaker 3: the Nurse Marchment history is not done.
- 27:02Speaker 4: But you know, Alan I, I made a couple of
- 27:05Speaker 4: comments on the broadcast, and I need, I need to
- 27:07Speaker 4: phrase this very very carefully because I understand that that has.
- 27:13Speaker 3: A place within the game.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Right You're you're trying to settle scores, You're trying to
- 27:18Speaker 4: to get your team riled up back into what I
- 27:21Speaker 4: get it, emotions.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Are high in the third period. I would have much
- 27:26Speaker 3: rather have seen that go after you were down three.
- 27:31Speaker 4: Nothing in the second, or or after you know, midway
- 27:34Speaker 4: through two you wanna you want to start to mix
- 27:37Speaker 4: it up and get in there. Great, right, But in
- 27:41Speaker 4: the third period. I think it's already too late. I
- 27:44Speaker 4: know that you're playing the same team the next night, lady,
- 27:46Speaker 4: the next night, the next game, so you know you're
- 27:48Speaker 4: trying that to settle or put an estimation point on
- 27:51Speaker 4: that there maybe prevent some things happening there. But I
- 27:55Speaker 4: also look at the fact that you know what, Marshman
- 27:58Speaker 4: and Darnield nurse Nurse didn't like to hit all right,
- 28:01Speaker 4: Credit Marchmant for not taking the bait, you know, and
- 28:04Speaker 4: at the end of it he ended up getting drawing
- 28:07Speaker 4: a penalty on dry sidle and and all of that. Right,
- 28:10Speaker 4: I give Marchman all the credit in the world for
- 28:13Speaker 4: doing that. But on the other side of it, listen,
- 28:15Speaker 4: if the guy doesn't want to go, he doesn't want
- 28:17Speaker 4: to go, say what you want, call him what you want.
- 28:19Speaker 3: But after a while, what are we doing here? Like
- 28:21Speaker 3: you're following this guy around.
- 28:23Speaker 1: It was clear that Marchmint was in Edmonton's head all
- 28:26Speaker 1: day long.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Yes, and again good on good on two seven. But
- 28:31Speaker 4: at the end of the day, move on, right, you
- 28:33Speaker 4: want to get your pound the flesh. You want to
- 28:35Speaker 4: grab him and you know, give him a big hit
- 28:38Speaker 4: against the wall, give him a couple slashes after the whistle. Great, fine, whatever,
- 28:43Speaker 4: but this was it was getting comical to a point
- 28:46Speaker 4: where Nurse and march Mint were still slapping sticks off,
- 28:51Speaker 4: face offs, and I'm like, buddy, both of you like,
- 28:54Speaker 4: go to your corner, go to your corner.
- 28:56Speaker 3: We'll like again, I get it.
- 29:00Speaker 2: This has a.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Place, but it's for nothing, right, what are we doing here?
- 29:05Speaker 3: Let's just go home? It's you know what I mean.
- 29:07Speaker 3: I got it's two o'clock, three o'clock.
- 29:09Speaker 4: When it's on a Saturday, I get a rare Saturday
- 29:11Speaker 4: night off with my son, like I want to go home.
- 29:14Speaker 3: What are we doing here?
- 29:15Speaker 1: I got my Christmas lights on up that night? And
- 29:17Speaker 1: this man pushed it back further.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I was, I was.
- 29:20Speaker 4: I love the response from Carts and Freddie. We'll talk
- 29:23Speaker 4: about that later. I love the response by them. I
- 29:26Speaker 4: love the fight in the krake. But at a certain point,
- 29:30Speaker 4: I'm just looking at this and I'm like, guys, you've
- 29:32Speaker 4: made your point. Can we can we move on here?
- 29:35Speaker 4: I'll see you Thursday, right, pick it up from there.
- 29:38Speaker 7: I wonder how much the Thursday game played into that,
- 29:42Speaker 7: because when I think about playoff series, game one of
- 29:46Speaker 7: a series, like you could be losing it for nothing.
- 29:49Speaker 7: It's not like it's going to be late in the
- 29:51Speaker 7: third period and go, well, we'll just pack it in
- 29:52Speaker 7: and let them run all over us the rest of
- 29:54Speaker 7: this game. Like you know, you're seeing them again for
- 29:56Speaker 7: game two, Game three, game four, and you want to say,
- 30:00Speaker 7: we're not going to allow you to walk all over
- 30:02Speaker 7: us in our own building. We're gonna stand up for
- 30:04Speaker 7: each other. We didn't like what you So that's going
- 30:06Speaker 7: to carry through until the end of the third period,
- 30:08Speaker 7: regardless of what the score is.
- 30:10Speaker 3: I agree, I want.
- 30:11Speaker 7: To see more of it in the first period and
- 30:13Speaker 7: less of it in the third period. I don't necessarily
- 30:16Speaker 7: want it to go away in the third period. So
- 30:17Speaker 7: I think two things can be true. But especially when
- 30:20Speaker 7: you're going to see that team a few days later
- 30:23Speaker 7: back in their barn, I think you want to you
- 30:25Speaker 7: want to make sure that that message is clearly sent
- 30:28Speaker 7: and let's not forget.
- 30:29Speaker 4: Let's not forget either, Like March Ben and Nurse, this
- 30:32Speaker 4: wasn't something that happened on Saturday.
- 30:34Speaker 1: This goes back back last season, goes back last season
- 30:37Speaker 1: Dallas Edmonton playoff series, when Nurse and Rantnam got into it.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Marchmant went in and tried to do what he could.
- 30:45Speaker 4: So you know, obviously march Ben's on this team in
- 30:49Speaker 4: Seattle now, but there's friends all over the league, and
- 30:52Speaker 4: you try to take my buddy, you try and take
- 30:55Speaker 4: my buddy's head off.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I haven't forgotten, you know what I mean. Like, listen
- 31:00Speaker 3: the Tannev brothers. Okay, someone goes after Chris Tannev like
- 31:04Speaker 3: Brandon's my brother.
- 31:05Speaker 4: I'm not gonna I'm not gonna not take that, you
- 31:08Speaker 4: know what I mean.
- 31:09Speaker 3: So again, I'm not saying that that march Mitt was
- 31:13Speaker 3: sticking up for Rantonan.
- 31:14Speaker 2: But listen, they.
- 31:15Speaker 4: Had a big of a beef back in the playoffs
- 31:17Speaker 4: last year, so who knows where this came from. Again,
- 31:22Speaker 4: I liked march Bett's ability to get under their skin. Unfortunately,
- 31:27Speaker 4: Edmondson got the last laugh with the four nothing win,
- 31:30Speaker 4: but it was getting, in my humble opinion, it was
- 31:34Speaker 4: getting a bit silly as we got into the last
- 31:38Speaker 4: five minutes of the third period and they're still stick
- 31:42Speaker 4: whack at each other, Like, guys, it's over, it's already
- 31:44Speaker 4: four nothing.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Save it for Thursday. I want to go home.
- 31:47Speaker 1: This is also where the officials, I think, need to
- 31:49Speaker 1: be given a little a little bit more credit here
- 31:51Speaker 1: because we tend to ignore them when things are going well,
- 31:54Speaker 1: and only when there's a blown call that's when they
- 31:57Speaker 1: come into the spotlight here. But Tom Shabluski, Rady Hamilton
- 32:00Speaker 1: as well, Nurse and Marchman got ten minute misconducts at
- 32:05Speaker 1: seventeen oh one of period three. That's an officials message
- 32:09Speaker 1: they're keeping a leash on this game or else Pandora's
- 32:12Speaker 1: box is opening. And now you're getting concerned potential injuries.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Say if an absolute gong show breaks out.
- 32:19Speaker 7: Well, I'll think for a second, the don't think for
- 32:22Speaker 7: a second that the referees don't know about that history
- 32:24Speaker 7: as well. So it's not just hey, it's late in
- 32:27Speaker 7: the game, what this game's over, let's put these guys
- 32:30Speaker 7: to send these guys to the shower. It's we know
- 32:32Speaker 7: the history of these players, and the game is out
- 32:35Speaker 7: of reach, and the ten minute misconduct sends them to
- 32:38Speaker 7: the shower, So let's just do that. So you know,
- 32:40Speaker 7: referees would never necessarily admit to that, but we see
- 32:43Speaker 7: it all the time.
- 32:44Speaker 3: And I think last thing for me on this topic
- 32:46Speaker 3: is that I.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Wouldn't it wouldn't surprise me to see things carry over
- 32:53Speaker 4: to Thursday. However, because Minnesota and Edmonton play tonight for
- 33:00Speaker 4: the Oilers, there's going to be a game in between.
- 33:03Speaker 3: There's gonna be.
- 33:04Speaker 4: A buffer in between, so maybe there's going to be
- 33:06Speaker 4: something else for Edmonton to be upset at.
- 33:09Speaker 3: So maybe we move on.
- 33:12Speaker 4: But I know, I know, but like, if you're not
- 33:18Speaker 4: gonna give me a line brawl off the opening face off,
- 33:20Speaker 4: let's move on.
- 33:21Speaker 1: You still believe hockey players have long memories out.
- 33:24Speaker 7: They have very long memories that can carry these overseason
- 33:27Speaker 7: to season.
- 33:28Speaker 3: I listen, it's funny you say that. I remember.
- 33:31Speaker 4: I've asked you questions before, like, hey, who's the one
- 33:34Speaker 4: guy that you.
- 33:35Speaker 3: Still can't stand?
- 33:36Speaker 4: And you were like, oh, back in nineteen ninety and
- 33:39Speaker 4: that's the bridge No, the goal song.
- 33:43Speaker 3: From mc can Loops Blazers business.
- 33:45Speaker 1: We'll be driving around that they still play that thing,
- 33:48Speaker 1: they still play that thing.
- 33:50Speaker 3: I'll reach over and changed the channel. I hate that song.
- 33:53Speaker 3: I've talked to JT. Brown a couple of times and
- 33:57Speaker 3: I I'm not gonna I'm not gonna say.
- 33:59Speaker 4: Who he's but there are a couple of players still
- 34:01Speaker 4: in the league that he's like, man if I was
- 34:05Speaker 4: still playing, don't let me catch in the train tracks.
- 34:08Speaker 1: That's also how you begin to hate certain goal songs,
- 34:11Speaker 1: is that when it happens over and over and over
- 34:13Speaker 1: out Like I remember one of the one of the
- 34:14Speaker 1: coaches that Everett nice Share, Louis mass he's now coaching
- 34:18Speaker 1: in AHL San Jose, but he told me a long
- 34:21Speaker 1: time ago when he played in the us HL, there
- 34:24Speaker 1: was one team that had celebrate by Cooling the Gang
- 34:27Speaker 1: as their goal song, and they scored about probably eleven
- 34:30Speaker 1: or twelve times against them every I like that one
- 34:34Speaker 1: night cell year that every like twelve times he about
- 34:39Speaker 1: wanted to go upstairs, take a stick and absolutely pumble
- 34:43Speaker 1: the sound equipment system by the end of the game.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Yep. Not interesting.
- 34:49Speaker 1: At practice, we saw the crack ind do a little
- 34:51Speaker 1: bit of shuffling here. Not so much line rushes for
- 34:54Speaker 1: earlier today on Tuesday, but noticeable given the fact that
- 34:58Speaker 1: Mason Marchmant didn't skate today or yesterday. Brandon Montour hasn't
- 35:03Speaker 1: skated last two days. But Laine Lambert, he said, expects
- 35:06Speaker 1: him to play Thursday against Edmonton. So you take the
- 35:09Speaker 1: defensive Paris for what it's worth, and there was some
- 35:11Speaker 1: juggling going on here, But going back to Monday, it
- 35:14Speaker 1: looks as if Jared mccannon's back with Matty Veneers and
- 35:17Speaker 1: Jordan Eberley, Yonnie Newman maybe getting good a chance with
- 35:20Speaker 1: Shane Wright and Coppocaco Berkeley, Catton, Chandler Stevenson, Elie Tolbenen
- 35:26Speaker 1: together Ty Carcier, Freddie Gadreaux, Ryan Winterton. So depending upon
- 35:31Speaker 1: where Marshman slots in, if he does play or not Thursday,
- 35:36Speaker 1: it leads me here to Jaden Schwartz. How much have
- 35:39Speaker 1: the Kraken missed him last game? Plus?
- 35:41Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean he's one of these guys where you know,
- 35:45Speaker 7: on the surface, outwardly you go, well, this is a
- 35:48Speaker 7: player that's getting older, and you know you don't expect
- 35:51Speaker 7: as much as anymore now.
- 35:53Speaker 3: I think Jayden Schwartz is the.
- 35:54Speaker 7: Kind of guy that you know, prepares for every game,
- 35:57Speaker 7: probably more than he did ten years ago. It takes
- 36:00Speaker 7: him a little bit longer to get his body ready,
- 36:02Speaker 7: it takes them a little bit longer to recover, but
- 36:04Speaker 7: he's doing everything possible to play at the top of
- 36:08Speaker 7: his game right now, and it was it was unfortunate
- 36:10Speaker 7: to see him go out because he affects the offense,
- 36:13Speaker 7: he affects the defense. He'll affect the power play, the
- 36:16Speaker 7: penalty kills sometimes. But you know what he brings is
- 36:20Speaker 7: is not just offense from the standpoint of Jared McCann's
- 36:24Speaker 7: got a great shot.
- 36:25Speaker 3: You know. He brings the offense.
- 36:28Speaker 7: From deflections, from rebounds, from getting the puck to the net,
- 36:32Speaker 7: from battling in front of the net for chaos reasons,
- 36:35Speaker 7: not necessarily even touch the puck on a goal, but
- 36:37Speaker 7: just for chaos reasons. And then you throw in his
- 36:40Speaker 7: defensive game as well, like he's all over the ice
- 36:42Speaker 7: and impacting the play all over. It's both ends miss
- 36:46Speaker 7: him for sure.
- 36:47Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a there's a calmness that I think Jaden
- 36:50Speaker 4: Schwartz brings to a game, not only on the ice,
- 36:53Speaker 4: but off the ice as well. You know, he'll come
- 36:55Speaker 4: off of a morning skate or a practice or on
- 36:58Speaker 4: the plane.
- 36:59Speaker 3: What's up shortz? He yo, boys, you know what I mean?
- 37:01Speaker 4: Likes You know, he has this calmness about him, very much,
- 37:10Speaker 4: a leading by example way about him. You know, we
- 37:14Speaker 4: talked so much about the guys on this roster is
- 37:17Speaker 4: willing to block a puck and score off their face.
- 37:20Speaker 4: He's one of the guys that'll do it. But we'll
- 37:22Speaker 4: jump right back into the shift and keep on going right.
- 37:24Speaker 4: So you miss that, you miss them at both ends
- 37:27Speaker 4: of the ice. I think the lineups that we saw
- 37:29Speaker 4: again at least today in practice with the absence of
- 37:32Speaker 4: Marchmen will see what if anything happens Thursday and Edmonton.
- 37:37Speaker 3: But I like this lineup.
- 37:40Speaker 4: It goes back to a little bit of what made
- 37:43Speaker 4: this team successful.
- 37:44Speaker 3: I like that fourth line.
- 37:46Speaker 4: That is a greasy, grindy fourth line that can get
- 37:50Speaker 4: some offense for you. I like putting nineteen ten and
- 37:53Speaker 4: seven back together. You saw some you saw some success
- 37:58Speaker 4: with them last year. I was a little surprised eyes
- 38:00Speaker 4: in a good way to see them together last game
- 38:03Speaker 4: against the Oilers, and then the Newman line is very
- 38:07Speaker 4: interesting for me.
- 38:08Speaker 3: I like. I like him there. You know, I've been
- 38:11Speaker 3: waiting to see a little.
- 38:13Speaker 4: Bit more from him in a few other areas. And
- 38:15Speaker 4: I know that you know he's known for that shot.
- 38:17Speaker 4: When he can get that shot off, you know more
- 38:20Speaker 4: often than not he's going to be put in a
- 38:22Speaker 4: great a chance to score.
- 38:24Speaker 3: But I like.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Where he's at with that with that grouping to maybe
- 38:27Speaker 4: give him a little bit more responsibility, put him up
- 38:29Speaker 4: in the lineup a little bit more, and open his
- 38:32Speaker 4: game up a bit more. So I like it, you know,
- 38:35Speaker 4: from what we saw in practice today, I don't see
- 38:39Speaker 4: this as an overreaction. I don't see this as lane,
- 38:43Speaker 4: you know, trying to hit any kind of panic button
- 38:46Speaker 4: or trying to make this work or force the square
- 38:49Speaker 4: peg into a round hole. This is a very comfortable
- 38:53Speaker 4: lineup to me. And again we'll see if Mason Marshman
- 38:56Speaker 4: is back in or who comes out where he slots in.
- 39:00Speaker 3: But at least from what I.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Saw in the forty five minute session today, it was
- 39:05Speaker 4: a very promising forward group for the cracking.
- 39:08Speaker 1: I'll tee this up for you in that lane. Lambert.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Just to kind of go back to what he was
- 39:12Speaker 1: saying earlier here to the media and on our show
- 39:15Speaker 1: a few moments ago, is that he still sees Yanni
- 39:18Speaker 1: Newman as a top six forward. It's just that he
- 39:21Speaker 1: has to earn more chances here and the opportunities will
- 39:24Speaker 1: certainly come. So maybe something is unlocked there once again
- 39:28Speaker 1: putting Shane Wright right back in the middle. And from
- 39:32Speaker 1: what you know and what I know talking with Coppocaco.
- 39:36Speaker 1: He is right now aching to get back on the
- 39:39Speaker 1: score sheet, and you figure you just get one or two,
- 39:41Speaker 1: maybe that gets them going into fifth gear.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:45Speaker 7: I mean you got a couple of guys and you
- 39:47Speaker 7: just named them in Coaco and Newman that are both
- 39:50Speaker 7: trying to score more. I think they do it in
- 39:53Speaker 7: different ways. But Lane Lambert also said that that Newman's
- 39:57Speaker 7: the kind of guy who wuntched the puck. And you know,
- 40:00Speaker 7: I'll say, from one hundred and fifty feet up, I
- 40:02Speaker 7: don't see it as much because oftentimes you can see
- 40:04Speaker 7: guys yelling for the puck, but it could be in
- 40:08Speaker 7: different ways that he wants that puck. And I think
- 40:10Speaker 7: that he has to want the puck not just from
- 40:13Speaker 7: the standpoint of let me hang out at the top
- 40:15Speaker 7: of the blue of at the top of the circles
- 40:17Speaker 7: waiting for a one time, or he has to want
- 40:18Speaker 7: the puck from the standpoint of I'm going to be
- 40:20Speaker 7: first into the corner on the fore check. I'm gonna
- 40:23Speaker 7: throw a big body check. I'm going to come up
- 40:25Speaker 7: with that fifty to fifty puck. I'm gonna feed it
- 40:27Speaker 7: back to the point. Then I'm going to battle to
- 40:29Speaker 7: get to the front of the net. I want it
- 40:31Speaker 7: back on my stick. On a deflection, I'm going to
- 40:33Speaker 7: find the rebound and I'm going.
- 40:34Speaker 3: To bury it. He has to want the puck that
- 40:36Speaker 3: way as well. And I think this also too.
- 40:38Speaker 4: You look at the absence of Jaden Schwartz, this could
- 40:41Speaker 4: be an opportunity for a guy like Yannie Newman to
- 40:44Speaker 4: use his size to develop more of a Jaden Schwartz.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Type of game to his game.
- 40:51Speaker 4: Now, Coppocco or sorry, Yannie Newman can go to the
- 40:54Speaker 4: front of the net. Now Yannie Newman can be first
- 40:57Speaker 4: in the corners, right. I think we talk so much
- 41:00Speaker 4: about whenever a guy gets taken out of the lineup,
- 41:03Speaker 4: whether it's injury by choice or or not by choice,
- 41:07Speaker 4: every coach will tell you, well, this is an opportunity
- 41:10Speaker 4: for player X to step up and do more. And
- 41:12Speaker 4: I think this is a perfect opportunity for another winger,
- 41:15Speaker 4: in this case, it's Yanni Newman to maybe add another
- 41:21Speaker 4: layer to his game and you know, going to a
- 41:25Speaker 4: dirty area, going to a corner, going in front of
- 41:27Speaker 4: the net, and developing that part of his game even more.
- 41:31Speaker 1: We're gonna get to Jason Botterral here in just a
- 41:33Speaker 1: little bit, and I had a great, great thing that
- 41:37Speaker 1: came to my head. I wanted to address off the
- 41:39Speaker 1: top with how much structure plays into this team's advantages.
- 41:43Speaker 1: We get deeper and deeper into the season, we're playing
- 41:47Speaker 1: in a condensed schedule type of year because of the
- 41:50Speaker 1: Olympic break, and it doesn't matter whether it's here, whether
- 41:54Speaker 1: it's Vancouver, whether it's in Dallas, whether it's in Florida, Ottawa, Toronto,
- 42:01Speaker 1: it really doesn't matter what team. They're really going through
- 42:03Speaker 1: one right now as far as the injury bug. And
- 42:06Speaker 1: then once you get past the Olympic break, who knows
- 42:10Speaker 1: who's going to survive that crush in Olympic competition, and
- 42:15Speaker 1: then you have to jump right back into play late
- 42:19Speaker 1: February or the condemned schedules back, and then you have
- 42:22Speaker 1: the crush of the playoff race. Just think of one team,
- 42:26Speaker 1: the Kraken have in their division, and they've got top
- 42:30Speaker 1: end players in high demand all across the globe, the
- 42:34Speaker 1: Vegas Golden Knights, and they're on the struggle bus right now.
- 42:38Speaker 1: They could easily pull this back together. Because some teams,
- 42:42Speaker 1: some executives, some prognosticators see them as an aircraft carrier
- 42:46Speaker 1: type of team like Edmonton or all they gotta do
- 42:49Speaker 1: is just flip the switch. But this leads me into
- 42:52Speaker 1: this and how much it really plays into the crack
- 42:55Speaker 1: and hands based on their system, based on their structure
- 43:00Speaker 1: to be able to level the playing field against teams
- 43:03Speaker 1: going through the injury bug. I mean, surprising maybe, but guys,
- 43:07Speaker 1: how surprised are we to see this amount of injuries
- 43:10Speaker 1: a season.
- 43:11Speaker 4: I'm surprised with the amount of long term injuries right.
- 43:15Speaker 4: I feel like every single there's not been a single
- 43:19Speaker 4: day to day that I've seen. Everything's been week to week,
- 43:22Speaker 4: four to.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Six, six to eight.
- 43:24Speaker 4: Guys are missing months off off the hop here. That's
- 43:29Speaker 4: been surprising to me.
- 43:30Speaker 3: I think with condensed schedule as we've seen.
- 43:34Speaker 4: So far, that the number of injuries hasn't surprised me.
- 43:37Speaker 4: But I'll tell you this right now, every time we
- 43:40Speaker 4: go through this, every time there is an international competition,
- 43:44Speaker 4: every time there was an Olympic break, someone inevitably always
- 43:47Speaker 4: gets hurt.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Right, someone will get hurt.
- 43:50Speaker 2: You hope that it's not for long term.
- 43:53Speaker 4: You hope that it's not one of the stars of
- 43:55Speaker 4: your league that will fill visiting Barnes. But at the
- 43:58Speaker 4: end of the day, we're gonna have somebody from Canada,
- 44:00Speaker 4: the US, Sweden, or Finland, the big ones right that
- 44:04Speaker 4: that supply ninety percent of their teams to the NHL.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Someone's gonna get hurt. And I think at the end
- 44:11Speaker 3: of the day.
- 44:12Speaker 4: The Cup winner this year, the playoff behemoth this year
- 44:17Speaker 4: might not be your stereotypical oiler Golden Knight. I mean,
- 44:21Speaker 4: it might be Colorado for all we know, but it
- 44:23Speaker 4: wouldn't see it might. It would not surprise me one
- 44:27Speaker 4: bit to see the second wild card that snuck in
- 44:31Speaker 4: on the season's last day, but they've just been the
- 44:34Speaker 4: healthier team.
- 44:35Speaker 3: Would not surprise me at all to.
- 44:37Speaker 4: See them get to June and get to the final,
- 44:40Speaker 4: right because I think this year, I mean, talent always
- 44:44Speaker 4: wins out. Obviously, the best team always wins, but I
- 44:48Speaker 4: think this year there's going to have to be some
- 44:51Speaker 4: combination of the best team but also the healthiest team
- 44:55Speaker 4: that's going to ultimately have success. And I think the
- 44:58Speaker 4: Olympic break the team and listen, we all want our
- 45:03Speaker 4: teams to be represented. I want to cheer on my
- 45:06Speaker 4: players internationally right now, depending on who you talk to,
- 45:10Speaker 4: it looks like Brandon Montour is the only crack in
- 45:15Speaker 4: North America state side for Team Canada that's going to
- 45:18Speaker 4: have a realistic shot to make the roster. I think Coppocaco,
- 45:22Speaker 4: Ellie Tolvenin are on Finland's radar. Coppocaco, Ellie Tolbnin, Brandon Montour.
- 45:28Speaker 4: I know that there's been some decord talk for Team
- 45:31Speaker 4: USA and their third goalie spot, but you know, it's
- 45:34Speaker 4: kind of a from a fan perspective, I want to
- 45:36Speaker 4: see the cracking represent it. But at the end of
- 45:38Speaker 4: the day, if you only have to worry about sending
- 45:41Speaker 4: two or three guys to the Olympics and you have
- 45:43Speaker 4: everyone healthy coming back, at the end of the day,
- 45:46Speaker 4: if it means a playoff run, if it means a
- 45:48Speaker 4: banner in your building, I'll take that.
- 45:51Speaker 7: You know, you said the talent always wins out, and
- 45:53Speaker 7: I agree with that, but I think that to your
- 45:56Speaker 7: point about the health of the team, it's the talent
- 45:59Speaker 7: that you can put on the.
- 45:59Speaker 3: Eye that wins out.
- 46:00Speaker 7: And we're seeing it all over the league this year,
- 46:03Speaker 7: Like look at Buffalo Winnipeg five to one. Why Connor
- 46:08Speaker 7: hell Buck's out, You know, like a key piece to
- 46:11Speaker 7: that team's success is out long term. And you know,
- 46:14Speaker 7: you don't hope for injury for anybody, But you think
- 46:17Speaker 7: about these teams that are wagons that are top of
- 46:20Speaker 7: the top of the league right now. You think, well,
- 46:22Speaker 7: they've got a superstar, or they've got a great goaltender,
- 46:25Speaker 7: or they've got you know, a superstar defenseman. If that
- 46:28Speaker 7: person got injured, what would happen? You know what if
- 46:30Speaker 7: it was for a couple of months, what would happen
- 46:32Speaker 7: with that team? Would they still be a Cup contender?
- 46:35Speaker 7: And I think that's an indicator of the parody of
- 46:38Speaker 7: the league right now, is you're you're one superstar injury
- 46:41Speaker 7: away from dropping from first to fifth in a few weeks.
- 46:45Speaker 4: The Cracking right now are three point shy of being
- 46:50Speaker 4: in first place and two points out of a playoff spot.
- 46:55Speaker 3: Let me pull up the things.
- 46:56Speaker 4: Yeah, so the Cracking right now have got the second
- 46:59Speaker 4: log guard. Right now, Seattle is five points back of
- 47:04Speaker 4: first and they are one.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Point up on Edmonton to being out of the playoffs.
- 47:10Speaker 4: Right So listen, it's so tight it is razor thin
- 47:14Speaker 4: this year in a lot of these divisions.
- 47:17Speaker 1: How far have they come? How's a trademarket? Looking what
- 47:20Speaker 1: about Berkeley Canton's progress and much more well. Earlier today
- 47:24Speaker 1: at crank In Community ice Plex ever at al myself
- 47:27Speaker 1: all caught up with Crack and general manager Jason Botterrell.
- 47:30Speaker 1: All right, without further ado, A big pleasure to be
- 47:32Speaker 1: joined now by Crack and GM Jason Bottrell past the
- 47:35Speaker 1: quarter checkpoint here of the season. Jason, thank you very
- 47:38Speaker 1: much here for doing this. And I first want to
- 47:40Speaker 1: just kind of, you know, edge our way in just
- 47:42Speaker 1: by saying that we're in a pretty you know, massive break,
- 47:44Speaker 1: it feels like right now for the schedules. Some guys
- 47:46Speaker 1: went off and did their own thing for Thanksgiving, but
- 47:48Speaker 1: how was your break for a few days as well?
- 47:49Speaker 6: It was great to had a lot of family members
- 47:51Speaker 6: out here and no catching at PWHL game. Obviously having
- 47:56Speaker 6: two home games was a lot of excitement, so it
- 47:59Speaker 6: was a great week overall.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I just enjoyed the PWHL opener.
- 48:02Speaker 6: Well to me, I have two daughters who both play
- 48:04Speaker 6: the game, so they love being out there and just
- 48:06Speaker 6: the energy of it. We went to a game in
- 48:08Speaker 6: Detroit last year they had about fourteen thousand, so to
- 48:11Speaker 6: have sixteen thousand, you just see the passion the skill
- 48:15Speaker 6: level that's out there, and enthusiasm the crowd. It was
- 48:18Speaker 6: a great experience.
- 48:18Speaker 1: It was a memorable day for this city, this landscape,
- 48:22Speaker 1: this game as well to another off to a great
- 48:24Speaker 1: start here. Let's kind of get into this here and
- 48:26Speaker 1: let's talk Lane Lambert. First off, what have you learned
- 48:29Speaker 1: about him that maybe people didn't know about him around here,
- 48:33Speaker 1: say maybe about five months ago.
- 48:34Speaker 6: Well, I think overall, Lanes delivered what was sort of
- 48:38Speaker 6: expected from him. He's brought intensity to our group. He's
- 48:41Speaker 6: brought a work ethic. I think our team has a
- 48:43Speaker 6: clear identity that there's going to be a battle, We're
- 48:46Speaker 6: going to be strong defensively as a team and go
- 48:49Speaker 6: from there. I think just what I really enjoyed working
- 48:51Speaker 6: with him on is the development of our younger players.
- 48:55Speaker 3: There is an.
- 48:56Speaker 6: Intensity during the games with Lane, but in the off days,
- 48:59Speaker 6: it's what are the folks on what do we have
- 49:00Speaker 6: to continue to help these younger players make the next
- 49:03Speaker 6: step in their careers. And to have that engagement with
- 49:06Speaker 6: myself with the players has certainly been enjoyable and I
- 49:10Speaker 6: think it's going to help out our organization moving forward.
- 49:12Speaker 1: I love hearing from Lane Lambert that there's always more
- 49:15Speaker 1: than one way to win, and this team's got the
- 49:18Speaker 1: defensive part down pat Many people are asking it gives
- 49:22Speaker 1: this team an edge, But as we get deeper into
- 49:24Speaker 1: the season, maybe how much And kind of what we're
- 49:26Speaker 1: getting at here is, as we get deeper into the season,
- 49:28Speaker 1: where do you get the sense about the type of
- 49:31Speaker 1: game this team has to play when teams are other
- 49:34Speaker 1: teams are getting settled into their game, and now that
- 49:37Speaker 1: stacks up against the rest of the NHL.
- 49:38Speaker 6: Well, I think the fact that we've our players, our
- 49:41Speaker 6: coaching staff has set up a defensive system, I think
- 49:43Speaker 6: just allows us to get more confidence in it. It
- 49:47Speaker 6: allows us to certainly be a part of games, gives
- 49:49Speaker 6: us an opportunity to win games every night. I think
- 49:53Speaker 6: we've talked about it from the get go. We're going
- 49:55Speaker 6: to have to be a group of a collaboration. From
- 49:58Speaker 6: a Ford perspective, I just think back to the game
- 50:02Speaker 6: against Chicago a week or two ago. Like you know,
- 50:04Speaker 6: you have different players stepping up in different roles or
- 50:06Speaker 6: defensemen have contributed in key situations. Having a young player
- 50:10Speaker 6: and that game, a guy like Oscar molgarg be a
- 50:13Speaker 6: part of getting the first goal, sort of going there,
- 50:15Speaker 6: We're going to have to have different people sort of
- 50:17Speaker 6: step up, you know. But what I like about our
- 50:20Speaker 6: group is I think we have We've had success with
- 50:23Speaker 6: our defensive system. We know how to play that system.
- 50:27Speaker 6: Now it's hey, how are we working on other elements
- 50:29Speaker 6: of our game? How are we working on our special
- 50:30Speaker 6: teams a little bit more? How are we working on
- 50:32Speaker 6: from an offensive standpoint? But it always goes back to
- 50:35Speaker 6: that defensive structure, and I think our I appreciate that
- 50:39Speaker 6: our players have understand how we have to win games
- 50:42Speaker 6: and continue to work with our coaching staff on that.
- 50:44Speaker 7: Jason, this team looks mostly similar from last season, but
- 50:47Speaker 7: is playing very different and having a lot of success
- 50:50Speaker 7: doing it. What piece of the puzzle, if you will,
- 50:53Speaker 7: are you out there looking for that might push this
- 50:55Speaker 7: team to that next level?
- 50:57Speaker 6: Well, I think internally you're you're always looking just more
- 51:00Speaker 6: from our younger players and continue their development. From that standpoint,
- 51:04Speaker 6: I think we've always looked at like we feel very
- 51:07Speaker 6: comfortable with our goal tolling right now. I think our
- 51:09Speaker 6: defense court were you know, earlier in the year with
- 51:12Speaker 6: Josh Mhura and Fleurian they did an excellent job and
- 51:15Speaker 6: then once Alexiak's come back that's sick has been very stable.
- 51:18Speaker 6: From that standpoint, I think we're we're just always continue
- 51:21Speaker 6: to look at different mixes.
- 51:23Speaker 3: From our forward group.
- 51:24Speaker 6: You know, we've run into injuries. The rest of the
- 51:26Speaker 6: leagues run into injuries and stuff too. We've talked so
- 51:29Speaker 6: much about it, just not only in Seattle here but
- 51:31Speaker 6: down in Coachilla Valley, the importance of continuing to develop
- 51:34Speaker 6: our forwards because we're going to need them over you know,
- 51:36Speaker 6: the next two months here especially, you look at it,
- 51:38Speaker 6: I think starting Thursday, we play eleven games in twenty nights.
- 51:41Speaker 6: You get into January seventeen games, and then that month
- 51:45Speaker 6: more injuries are going to a rise. So it's going
- 51:47Speaker 6: to be important that we have the depth from that
- 51:49Speaker 6: ability there. So continue just to make a different adjustments.
- 51:53Speaker 6: I think to our forward group is something that we
- 51:54Speaker 6: continue to look at.
- 51:56Speaker 4: Six months for you now, coming up on six months
- 51:58Speaker 4: for you now on the job in the GM chair,
- 52:00Speaker 4: what have you learned about not only yourself in your
- 52:03Speaker 4: second stint as GM, but also how has the league
- 52:06Speaker 4: changed since you were in Buffalo pulling the strings there.
- 52:09Speaker 6: Well, I think it's the job has been an easier transition,
- 52:12Speaker 6: just because I was so familiar with the organization. I
- 52:15Speaker 6: knew the players in the organization, the staff members continue
- 52:18Speaker 6: to work very closely with Ron on all matters here
- 52:20Speaker 6: and stuff. So it just made that transition that much easier.
- 52:23Speaker 6: I think you just look at the league. You know,
- 52:26Speaker 6: you continue to see a year ago. You look at
- 52:28Speaker 6: the twenty twenty six free agent market, it's gonna be
- 52:30Speaker 6: a great year, right, and then everyone gets signed up
- 52:32Speaker 6: and you see just the parody within the league, but
- 52:37Speaker 6: the importance of the canue development of your younger players.
- 52:41Speaker 6: You look at the some of the teams in the
- 52:43Speaker 6: West that sort of taking a step this year, it's
- 52:46Speaker 6: the young players that they continue to develop, and you know,
- 52:48Speaker 6: from my perspective, I think it's exciting. I think you
- 52:52Speaker 6: look at you know, maybe at the start of November,
- 52:56Speaker 6: there was a couple of teams that you sort of think, oh,
- 52:58Speaker 6: you know, they're off to tough start.
- 53:00Speaker 3: Where are they going to be at?
- 53:01Speaker 6: Then they have a great November, a team like Minnesota
- 53:03Speaker 6: that we're going to see next week, and you're like, wow,
- 53:06Speaker 6: they're right back in the mix here now, in the
- 53:07Speaker 6: battle there and stuff. So I think there's ebb and
- 53:10Speaker 6: flows throughout the league. But it's it's a very competitive
- 53:13Speaker 6: league right now, and I think pretty much every night,
- 53:16Speaker 6: you know, fans are have a belief that their team
- 53:19Speaker 6: can win. So it's it's fun from a fan perspective,
- 53:22Speaker 6: very stressful from a coaching and management perspective.
- 53:24Speaker 4: And from I guess a smaller organizational that you have
- 53:28Speaker 4: been here since since the beginning and seeing this team
- 53:32Speaker 4: go from inauguration to now, what have you learned and
- 53:35Speaker 4: what have you seen from this organization? What are some
- 53:38Speaker 4: of the big differences that you've seen from day one
- 53:40Speaker 4: to now, you know, almost midway through year five already.
- 53:43Speaker 3: Yep.
- 53:44Speaker 6: Well, I think we've continued to work on from a
- 53:46Speaker 6: standpoint of having our veteran players lead the charge. But
- 53:49Speaker 6: now you're you're seeing all these players that we've talked.
- 53:51Speaker 3: About right like heys are coming, kids are here.
- 53:55Speaker 6: You know, just you look at a player like you know,
- 53:57Speaker 6: Ryan Winterton from our first draft now joining Maddy Beinier's
- 54:01Speaker 6: and Ryker Evans. It's in it's a difficult part in hockey,
- 54:04Speaker 6: right It's it's what's so different compared to the NFL.
- 54:08Speaker 6: It takes such a long time drafting eighteen year olds
- 54:10Speaker 6: to eventually get there. The fact that now we're not
- 54:12Speaker 6: just talking about, you know, sort of fictitious scenarios and
- 54:15Speaker 6: what Ryan Winterton could be at the national hockeygu level.
- 54:18Speaker 6: We're actually seeing that and that gets us excited, right.
- 54:21Speaker 4: Uh.
- 54:21Speaker 6: You know, a guy like Oscar Moguard, we talked about
- 54:24Speaker 6: him a couple of minutes ago, like most of our
- 54:26Speaker 6: fans would probably be like, who is this guy? You know,
- 54:28Speaker 6: a Danish kid playing over in Sweden, right and now
- 54:31Speaker 6: you know, you see preseason games, you see him in
- 54:32Speaker 6: the National Hockey League games. That that gets us excited
- 54:35Speaker 6: from that standpoint. But I think what we've just continued
- 54:38Speaker 6: to try to find that balance as an organization on
- 54:41Speaker 6: you know, we still have some players from that inaugural year.
- 54:45Speaker 6: They have the history of winning Cups in different organizations
- 54:49Speaker 6: and then having I think we're seeing the importance of
- 54:52Speaker 6: having a strong American Hockey League team that has you know,
- 54:54Speaker 6: played playoff success. Like you know, whether it's Shane Wright,
- 54:58Speaker 6: whether it's Ryker Evans, whether it's Joey to these players
- 55:01Speaker 6: got a lot of confidence being on those playoff runs
- 55:05Speaker 6: down there, and now they get up I think it
- 55:07Speaker 6: just gives them, I think, more confidence when they're in
- 55:09Speaker 6: big games here at the national hockeygu level.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Jason Bottrell joining us here on Cracking Weekly. Jason, you
- 55:13Speaker 1: weigh a pretty delicate balance in between trying to remain
- 55:16Speaker 1: competitive but also usher the younger kids, the younger players
- 55:19Speaker 1: here into the mix. So as we get deeper into
- 55:21Speaker 1: the season and this team is still as well in
- 55:23Speaker 1: the mix. How real do you think it is to
- 55:25Speaker 1: be active in the trade market for upgrades this year
- 55:28Speaker 1: versus waiting it out and going for even more next
- 55:32Speaker 1: offseason when you have the cap going up in other
- 55:35Speaker 1: factors to play as well.
- 55:36Speaker 6: No, and the one thing I just I would push
- 55:38Speaker 6: back a little bit on. I believe our development helps
- 55:41Speaker 6: us win hockey games, and I think it's it's always
- 55:44Speaker 6: a fine balance of way. When does a player need
- 55:47Speaker 6: to be in the American Hockey League work and when
- 55:48Speaker 6: they come up National Hockey League. I think you see
- 55:50Speaker 6: a lot of our players, especially a guy like Ryan Winterton,
- 55:53Speaker 6: playing different roles penalty kill and anything like there you
- 55:56Speaker 6: still want to continue to develop his offensive game, and
- 55:58Speaker 6: that's what I give our staff a lot of credit
- 56:01Speaker 6: behind the scenes, things that maybe our fans don't see
- 56:03Speaker 6: on game, but on off days, just our staff working
- 56:07Speaker 6: with Ryan on his puck skills, working on his offensive
- 56:10Speaker 6: game in and around the net, but also through video too.
- 56:13Speaker 6: So I like that our staff continues to, Hey, how
- 56:16Speaker 6: can Ryan help our team right now in the nationalc League?
- 56:18Speaker 6: How do we continue to work with Ryan so he
- 56:20Speaker 6: helps us down the road from there. But look, it's
- 56:23Speaker 6: a scenario that we're continuing to look at, you know,
- 56:25Speaker 6: in the trade market, on things that we can add
- 56:28Speaker 6: to our group and add different mixes to our group.
- 56:31Speaker 6: We have over the years certainly accumulated draft picks that
- 56:35Speaker 6: we hey, we're certainly open to taking draft picks, but
- 56:37Speaker 6: also utilize them in different trades from the area. So
- 56:40Speaker 6: it's something that we continue to look at. But the
- 56:43Speaker 6: one thing I continue to push back and the one
- 56:44Speaker 6: thing I love that our coach staff is believed in
- 56:46Speaker 6: is like, hey, we develop these kids. That helps us
- 56:48Speaker 6: win a lot of hockey games, hopefully even this year.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Here's a guy growing right now before our area as
- 56:52Speaker 1: his name is Berkeley Catton. Yep, what benchmarks has he
- 56:55Speaker 1: hit that's made a big impression with you the rest
- 56:58Speaker 1: of this staff, And what do you think that as
- 57:00Speaker 1: an organization he had to look through before deciding if
- 57:04Speaker 1: the World Juniors for him is say, maybe a right
- 57:06Speaker 1: fit for him.
- 57:06Speaker 6: Well, look, uh, you know, Raw and myself, we're proud Canadians.
- 57:10Speaker 6: He always, you know, want to help out your country
- 57:13Speaker 6: in those scenarios and stuff for sure too. Second of all,
- 57:20Speaker 6: and let's be honest with the Americans, I believe haven't
- 57:22Speaker 6: went back to back, So it's just a little challenging.
- 57:24Speaker 6: A few a few people on my staff have brought
- 57:26Speaker 6: that up to you a few different times. But in
- 57:28Speaker 6: all reality, like from every week, we continue to look
- 57:30Speaker 6: at what's best for for Berkeley's development, you know, it's
- 57:33Speaker 6: when we uh and and what I've loved about Berkeley
- 57:37Speaker 6: is he's bought into this whole process, right, you know,
- 57:41Speaker 6: it's been disgusted a little bit before. But like he
- 57:43Speaker 6: worked so carefully with our player development staff last year
- 57:45Speaker 6: when he was having huge numbers in Spokane and on
- 57:48Speaker 6: the run and that had to be the main focus
- 57:50Speaker 6: was to help that team win. But behind the scenes
- 57:52Speaker 6: again and off days, he was focusing so much on
- 57:54Speaker 6: what are the things I got to do with the puck,
- 57:56Speaker 6: what I got to do to utilize my speed more
- 57:58Speaker 6: in different areas to be ready for the Ational Hockey League,
- 58:01Speaker 6: and then at the start of the year we add
- 58:03Speaker 6: him to our team. We don't play him right off
- 58:04Speaker 6: the bat. He's learning from no scenarios. And you know,
- 58:06Speaker 6: I just remember a scenario being up in Montreal. I
- 58:09Speaker 6: believe it was game three or so in the season,
- 58:12Speaker 6: and Ron Francis is talking to him and between the intermissions,
- 58:15Speaker 6: and you just see the hockey sense.
- 58:16Speaker 3: Between those two individuals, right.
- 58:18Speaker 6: You know, Ron's talking about different things on the ice
- 58:20Speaker 6: and Berkeley's already seen that type of thing and seeing
- 58:22Speaker 6: from there that standpoint, and what I've really loved with
- 58:26Speaker 6: his game is he's taking all this knowledge from our staff.
- 58:29Speaker 6: He's taking he makes a mistake on the ice, he's
- 58:31Speaker 6: certainly not perfect, he's not making the mistake the second time.
- 58:35Speaker 6: Maybe the goals haven't come, but it's not because of
- 58:37Speaker 6: opportunities he's in around them in that he's going into
- 58:40Speaker 6: different areas there, he's creating opportunities. I think you're seeing
- 58:43Speaker 6: him utilize the speed even more, you know, every night
- 58:46Speaker 6: out there and stuff. So that gets us excited of
- 58:49Speaker 6: where his games continue to develop. I love that our
- 58:52Speaker 6: staff is continuing to utilize them both at center and wing,
- 58:56Speaker 6: just to try to free him up from an offensive
- 58:57Speaker 6: standpoint a little bit because we see the hockey, since
- 59:00Speaker 6: see the plays and then does he win? Everyone want
- 59:02Speaker 6: a battle? No, but there's no fear in his game.
- 59:04Speaker 6: That's probably the one thing that I've been really impressed
- 59:06Speaker 6: for Technically a smaller player, he's gone into the battles,
- 59:10Speaker 6: he's attacked, he's been aggressive all over the ice, and
- 59:13Speaker 6: so No, it's been a pleasure working with him, and hey,
- 59:16Speaker 6: he's been a big part of our group, especially over
- 59:17Speaker 6: the last couple of games.
- 59:18Speaker 7: Jason, the three goalie experiment maybe not the elephant in
- 59:22Speaker 7: the room, but the small elephant in the room seems
- 59:25Speaker 7: to be a genius move at this point, based on
- 59:27Speaker 7: Matt Murray being injured. Right now, You've you've got three
- 59:29Speaker 7: goaltenders that have hovered above the nine hundred level and
- 59:32Speaker 7: save percentage. Do you see this something that the krack
- 59:35Speaker 7: and want to keep in place for the for the
- 59:37Speaker 7: whole season? Is this a temporary thing?
- 59:39Speaker 3: Your thoughts?
- 59:40Speaker 6: Well, I think it's serimilar to what we just talked
- 59:42Speaker 6: about Berkeley. Right You're you're evaluating week by week, and
- 59:45Speaker 6: you know at if there was a situation where we
- 59:48Speaker 6: might have gotten into injury situation and for defense, we
- 59:50Speaker 6: might have to make a different move. But I believe
- 59:54Speaker 6: our goaltending has given us great opportunities to win games
- 59:57Speaker 6: this year. I don't want to take anything from Joey,
- 1:00:00Speaker 6: but I think it's easier for Joey being in a
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: rhythm as a number one goalie. I give a lot
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: of credit to both Gruby and Matt Murray after staying ready,
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: and it's it's something that I want to go with to.
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: I understood how many games than the condensed schedule, but
- 1:00:15Speaker 6: I'm also sitting not sitting here and saying that it's
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: an easy process for those guys and the fact that
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: they stayed ready in practice, they stayed sharp with our
- 1:00:22Speaker 6: with Colin Zulian or our goalie coach, that he stayed
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: dialed in with him on what these guys needed. I
- 1:00:28Speaker 6: whenever they stepped in, they did a great job with it,
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: and I think they they earned a lot of respect
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: for staying ready. From that standpoint, you know, I was
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: glad that, you know, especially with Matt, we didn't give
- 1:00:38Speaker 6: him much run support whenever he got in there right way.
- 1:00:41Speaker 6: But again he stayed even keel with it. And I
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: think both those guys and both Gruby and Matt, they're
- 1:00:46Speaker 6: sort of focus on their own games, focus on stay
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: even keeled and not getting frustrated with the situation really
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: benefited them and it certainly has benefiting our team.
- 1:00:57Speaker 7: Now, did did the condensed schedule factor into that decision
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: to have three goaltenders?
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: One hundred percent?
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: Right, one hundred percent from a standpoint of you know,
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: you just knowing that you're going to have to utilize
- 1:01:09Speaker 6: your goalies, there's always the risk of injury. Unfortunately Matt
- 1:01:13Speaker 6: I was playing so well. It's disappointing from that by hey,
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: we're hoping to get them back whenever we can here.
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: And then the second part is just you know, the
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: development of our you own goalies too. I think there's
- 1:01:22Speaker 6: a time and place where the American Hockey They can
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: really help out goalies. I think having two sort of
- 1:01:28Speaker 6: veterans in Grooby and Matt, like the American Hockey League
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: isn't really needed for their their development, but it's needed
- 1:01:35Speaker 6: for Coco's development and for Oustmin's development. And uh, those two,
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: we wanted to make sure that we weren't taking games
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: away from them at the American hockey level, and like
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: I said, it's it's easy for a manager to talk
- 1:01:47Speaker 6: all of out the stuff to have a coach and
- 1:01:49Speaker 6: players actually buy into it and make it successful. That's
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: where they've done a great job this year.
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: Speaking of those two, we've seen Austman, We've seen Coco
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: last year, We've seen a lot of the draft picks
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: and the prospects come up.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: Who's next?
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: Who are you looking at down in Coachella Valley to
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: be that next first call up for them?
- 1:02:08Speaker 6: Well, I would say at the Ford group, what we're
- 1:02:10Speaker 6: so excited about the group down there is we feel
- 1:02:12Speaker 6: we have a huge mix, right. It's not just one player,
- 1:02:15Speaker 6: It's not just this specific type of player. We have
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: a lot of players who are putting themselves in situations
- 1:02:23Speaker 6: now where they're in a call up discussions, and it
- 1:02:24Speaker 6: started depending what we need you have. You've seen Oscar
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: Mogard already just from a two way PK element. You know,
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: Fercus has taken a huge step from an offensive standpoint.
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: Him and Morrison have a lot of chemistry together and
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: like their go to players down there right now from
- 1:02:41Speaker 6: us from an offensive perspective, Jacob Mollanson brings a physicality
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: with a veteran player like John Hayden, it's great to
- 1:02:47Speaker 6: see that, you know, instead of just rely on on
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: our veterans Ben Myers, John Hayden, Mitchell Stevens, these guys
- 1:02:52Speaker 6: who we know can certainly do it. It's great that
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: our younger kids, their first year and second year players
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: have now pushed themselves into that role and stuff. The
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: little disappointed with ed Shala that he was injured at
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: the start of the year. Now he's come back into mix.
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: That's great to see. So at a Ford perspective, we
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: feel it's almost more of a like, Okay, what do
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: we need from that role?
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: Is there?
- 1:03:11Speaker 6: What type of you know, player do we need at
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: the National Hockey League to be that call up on
- 1:03:15Speaker 6: the back end? Octa Vanon was injured for a little bit,
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: Nelson was injured for a little bit. But those two
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: guys on the right side have certainly helped us out
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: a lot. And then we got some a lot of
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: young players. You look at our do you look at
- 1:03:26Speaker 6: our defense card down there right now? As a rookie effort,
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: We think Ty Nelson as a second year player is
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: a wily veteran right, But I give them credit. I
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: give our coaching staff and Coachella Valley a lot of credit.
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: They continue to work with these players, don't get fresh
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: at they make mistakes. But you also see in every
- 1:03:42Speaker 6: game you see a little moment like oh, that's that's
- 1:03:44Speaker 6: what the crack and seeing them right like oh, I
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: see the physicality and Hammel, Oh, I see jug Nath
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: making that play price on the PK. Excellent job. Like
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: you see in each game. The's got these young defensemen
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: making the right plays and uh, to me, they've done
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: a great job down there and we're very happy with him.
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: Tilt by ham that was.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: Great one too. I love that. I got one more
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: for you.
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: And from from a league perspective, next year we're going
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: to eighty four games of the regular season. Obviously you've
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: got NHL players going into the Olympics. Are we going
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: to have another World Cup? Just from a league perspective,
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: what are what are the big topics being discussed in
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: your meetings and you see your thoughts on where this
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: league is going in terms of growth and development not
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: only in the on the ice, but in the community
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: in the public as well.
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:04:29Speaker 6: I think what you're seeing is just I think you've
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: seen a lot of young players come into the league
- 1:04:34Speaker 6: and then but then you still have these veteran players.
- 1:04:36Speaker 6: You know, whether it's the chase last year with Ovi,
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: obviously Crosby I think right now is third in NHL scoring.
- 1:04:41Speaker 6: It's amazing these superstar veteran players continue to do right.
- 1:04:45Speaker 6: So you had this amazing balance of veterans, you know,
- 1:04:48Speaker 6: whether it's because of the Olympics a year just being
- 1:04:50Speaker 6: focused on that, versus these young kids coming into the
- 1:04:53Speaker 6: league and just you know, there's no sort of growth
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: they're they're coming in right away and make an impact.
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: And to me, that gets that's exciting for so many
- 1:05:01Speaker 6: different fan bases. We talked touch on it earlier, the
- 1:05:03Speaker 6: parody in the league. You look at, yeah, we've been
- 1:05:06Speaker 6: happy with our record, we've been happy how our team's played,
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: but it's still a situation where you're a couple points
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: out of the playoffs and you're a couple of points
- 1:05:14Speaker 6: of being in first place. It's it's amazing that balance,
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: but I think that's great for all our fan bases.
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: I think it's great that you know you're not a
- 1:05:21Speaker 6: month in the season and you're already looking at next
- 1:05:23Speaker 6: year's draft. It's okay, what are the pieces we have
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: to add? What are we making adjustments to get back
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: in the playoff race? So I think all these things
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: lead into just it's the rival we talked about a
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: little bit earlier in Canada US right the Four Nations
- 1:05:36Speaker 6: last year was a huge hit.
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:05:38Speaker 6: I believe the Olympics is going to be a home
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: run too from that perspective, and it's an exciting time
- 1:05:43Speaker 6: just to be a part of our sport.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: Right now. Are the Kraken going overseas? When are we
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: gonna go to Sweden or Finland? I can't wait for
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: that that global series trip.
- 1:05:52Speaker 8: One of these questions that the fans want, Yeah, is
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: there a little personal you know in the Yeah, I
- 1:05:59Speaker 8: love seeat or they'll get me wrong, but you know,
- 1:06:01Speaker 8: all my other broadcaster.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: To tell the story.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: Wrapping things up, Jason, you said that you're happy with
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: the progress made. What's the biggest key for this team
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: to sustain success this season?
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: I think it's continuing what we've talked about. It's no
- 1:06:15Speaker 6: secret it's it's continuing our game from an offensive standpoint,
- 1:06:18Speaker 6: and it's not I think sometimes people think well, you
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: got to score more, you got to take more risks. No,
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: it's it's playing our system. It's it's continuing to Hey,
- 1:06:26Speaker 6: maybe end plays a little bit quicker in our D zone,
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: so we get other ds on our an area where
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: I think we focus on a little bit more as
- 1:06:32Speaker 6: our fore check, like you know that, I think there's
- 1:06:34Speaker 6: more opportunities there to you know, have a little bit
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: more sustained offensive zone time there. I think if you
- 1:06:41Speaker 6: do look at the numbers overall, we're okay from an
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: offensive zone time standpoint, but we have to just get
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: that high danger area right in front of the net.
- 1:06:48Speaker 6: We get a little bit more traffic there. That's certainly
- 1:06:50Speaker 6: where we miss a player like Jays Schwartz. He's no
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: matter what his stature is, he's there battling in those spots.
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: It's where we're excited to have Coco back in our lineup,
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: just to give a bit more of a NetFront presence
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: there and stuff too. We've done a great job in
- 1:07:03Speaker 6: sort of protecting that area in the A D zone.
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: It's where we have to attack a little bit more.
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: And then I think the coaches will certainly agree with you.
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: Like our special teams have to improve. You know, we
- 1:07:12Speaker 6: feel we have good plead players in those roles, but
- 1:07:17Speaker 6: we've battled so hard at five and five at even strength.
- 1:07:20Speaker 6: We have to make sure that special teams continue to be,
- 1:07:23Speaker 6: you know, an element that helps us win hockey games.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: I will share this with you. I have lost Kenna.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: How many fans have said, I'm having so much fun
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: watching this team win. A big pledge to you and
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: the staff, and thank you for your time. Jason, thank you,
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: thank you very much.
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: I have a great day. Guys.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: My goodness, what a conversation we had with Jason botterrel
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: earlier today. We're going to look forward to getting with
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: them once again as the season progresses, and who knows
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: as far as where this calendar, where this roster turns,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: as we get closer and closer here to trade deadline time,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: the Olympic break, you name it here. But big thanks
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: once again to the Crack and GM for joining us
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: here on Cracking weekly. All right, look at ahead here
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: to Edmonton and Detroit, very very small packed schedule once again,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: the Cracket on the road Thursday night and then back
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: home again for a big lump of home games this month,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: opening up with the Red wings. So we're just gonna
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: get right into it here with our three stars and
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: final thoughts in this one. My third star, guys, I'm
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: gonna go with Berkeley Catton again. He is still searching
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: for his first career NHL goal, but he continues to
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: stack games where he is looking more and more like
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: an nhller. From minute one to minute sixty, I thought
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: he had a great chance off the rush in the
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: second period, n I thing his way through the oiler defense,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: nearly parked one seven hold on Stewards Skinner and then
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: the breakaway, which I thought, and I was down there
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: right behind the net by my set, I thought that
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: was coming, and you tip your hat, you give credit
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: where credit is due, and Skinner made an impressive save.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: But the more and more Catton controls the puck with
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: purpose and with confidence like that, it's going to happen
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: for that first goal, and I believe the numbers all
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: so will be coming very brief. Ty Cartier my second star,
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: and what was unfortunately an offensive starved week here for
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: the crack. But again something told me where when you're
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: down in a four to nothing game and things started
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: to get ugly, who was going to be the first
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: to answer the bell. This was maybe a big question
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: mark first, you know, year, two years, maybe three years
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: as well. And after the goodrou Clattenberg fight, it's then
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Ragoula and Cartier and Cardha looked very impressive trading punches
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: when certainly the bell rang and his number was certainly
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: called in that instance. My first star now is Jared McCann.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: We're still looking for that first goal back. But I
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: think about the first period where he got a stick
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: right into the choppers and joked with the media, joke
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: with me as well a day later where he felt
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: like that he nearly swallowed his tooth and came right
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: back out two minutes later, not just once, but twice,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: almost scored, still had an assist as well to show
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: for his effort in that Dallas game. And I think
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: his game is trending in the right direction and you
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: can see, I mean, the rust coming out pretty quick here.
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: I think Jerry McCann's in a very very good spot
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: to get for his effort and then for a little
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: act of courage on top of that. He's my first
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: start here for the week.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I like, go ahead, good after no, I'm with you, Mike.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: I was This was a tough one. This was a
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: tough week for me because of the lack of offense.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: But I think I'm gonna go.
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: I'm gonna go McCann three for a lot of those
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: same reasons you're waiting to get him back. He had
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: a couple of good shots, the almost swallowing his tooth.
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: I mean, listen that you're on my three stars list.
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: It takes a couple of games to knock off the rust.
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: So I would expect with games coming pretty hot and
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: heavy here over the next week, I think McCann's by
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: the time we record this, maybe in a couple of weeks.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: The next not this coming Monday, but the next Monday edition.
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: I could see McCann with three or four more goals
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: over the next four five six games. I think number
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: two for me Berkeley Kadden again the same reason that
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: you mentioned. I mean, I'm waiting he should have three
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: or four. Every single game you're seeing something from him
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: that's like, yep, you you are at NHLO.
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: You have earned your spot. You deserve to be here.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: He keeps doing things that show off the skill and
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: the type of player that he's going to be. He
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: still sometimes will make that nineteen year old mistake.
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: I'm fine with it. You're eighteen games, twenty games in
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: your NHL career. You're gonna make these mistakes. But he's
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: learning from them, you know, Jason.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: I love what he said about him and Ron having
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: those moments in the locker room in between periods and you.
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: Could see the hockey ike starting to swirl. Love that
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: my number one, even though it got on my last nerve.
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: I'm gonna go the give a bleap meter, the team
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: toughness from Ty, from Freddie, and I'll put Marchie in
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: there for playing the brad mar shan rat annoying role
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: getting under Edmonton's skin. Give me all three of them
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: for the collective first star, grit sandpaper, give a blank
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: meter award, whatever you want.
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: Let's go home now. Okay, we're done, and as Al said,
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: not a chance off the hop we're gonna get back
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: into it. But for an offensive starved week, those three
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: get my star. Yeah for me. Berkeley Catton's in my
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: mix as well. He was my third star this week.
- 1:12:32Speaker 7: I thought he played his best two games this season
- 1:12:35Speaker 7: against Dallas and Edmonton, and he did not score, but
- 1:12:38Speaker 7: he came close. He had a breakaway. He had a
- 1:12:40Speaker 7: great one timer, which we hadn't seen him do yet.
- 1:12:44Speaker 7: I have a theory on it, and I was waiting
- 1:12:46Speaker 7: for him to score. But I'll share my theory now
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: we can talk about it more, maybe on the broadcast
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: on Thursday. My theory is is Brookeby Catton's game just
- 1:12:55Speaker 7: got elevated, not because of anything he did on the ice,
- 1:12:59Speaker 7: because what's happened off the ice. He's moved in with
- 1:13:02Speaker 7: Chandler Stevenson. Yeah, and I think that being around a
- 1:13:06Speaker 7: guy like Chandler Stevenson off the ice is going to
- 1:13:09Speaker 7: help his game on the ice.
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: I think we're starting to see it already.
- 1:13:12Speaker 7: So that's my That's my demarcation line for Berkeley Catton
- 1:13:17Speaker 7: this season is the Monday before Thanksgiving, before that Dallas game.
- 1:13:22Speaker 7: I believe that's when he moved in with with with
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: Channer Stevenson and his family. I think that's when things
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: started to change for Berkeley Catton. So we'll see how
- 1:13:29Speaker 7: that progresses here. Like just like the McCann comment, over
- 1:13:32Speaker 7: the next couple of a couple of weeks, my second
- 1:13:35Speaker 7: star shots on goal the Dallas game, the Crack had
- 1:13:39Speaker 7: twenty eight. It was twenty eight to twenty one. Even
- 1:13:41Speaker 7: though they lost the game, they outshot the Dallas Stars.
- 1:13:44Speaker 7: They out shot on nine to two in the third period,
- 1:13:46Speaker 7: So a big, a big change there. And then as
- 1:13:49Speaker 7: far as Edmonton goes, it was twenty four shots on goal,
- 1:13:51Speaker 7: but they matched Edmonton shot for shot, period for period,
- 1:13:55Speaker 7: you know, almost identical. I think by you know, within one.
- 1:13:59Speaker 7: So shot on goals seem to be a bigger priority lately,
- 1:14:01Speaker 7: and I think it's starting to show in those in
- 1:14:03Speaker 7: those tight games. And then my number one Stars Ben's done.
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: You know, he had that goal, two shots on goal,
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: and then a couple of a few block shots in
- 1:14:11Speaker 7: the Dallas game. But you know, he's a he's a reliable,
- 1:14:16Speaker 7: dependable defense been gaming and game out, and I'll like
- 1:14:19Speaker 7: give him at give him a few props when he
- 1:14:21Speaker 7: starts to put pucks in that as well.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: All Right, we got to bounce here cracking again facing
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: Edmonton Thursday ninth. That's gonna be a fun one. Hope
