- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 10th of April. And thank you for joining me.
- 0:19Thanks for inviting me into your day as we get to read another
- 0:22chapter of this fascinating story captured in Second Samuel
- 0:26for us. And today we are going to read a
- 0:30chapter that includes the death of someone who, for all intents
- 0:34and purposes, it just looks like he was trying to do the right
- 0:37thing and God strikes him down anyway.
- 0:39But the thing that's pretty important for us to kind of wrap
- 0:43our heads around, that we kind of lose when we jump in and out
- 0:46of the the biblical narrative is that God's people have come from
- 0:51their journeying through the desert where God was this
- 0:53incredibly holy God, and they had to go through all of these
- 0:57processes so that they would not defile God's holiness as they
- 1:01came closer to His presence. And now we reach the point
- 1:05where, as King of Israel, David decides it's time to move the
- 1:09Ark of the Covenant to the new centre of Israel from where he
- 1:13is ruling. And from the outside this could
- 1:16look like a very powerful king moving his little deity to where
- 1:20he thinks it should be. But that is not the way this
- 1:23story is. And so God is just reminding his
- 1:26people that he is still an incredibly powerful and holy
- 1:31God, and that no one and nothing dictates what God will and won't
- 1:36do. But He is a power unto himself,
- 1:39and it is in fact David who is subject to God's authority and
- 1:44kingship and not the other way around.
- 1:46So to our modern ears the sounds a little bit brutal, but this is
- 1:50God continuing to assert His Lordship over his King and over
- 1:55his Kingdom. So having said all that, should
- 1:58we read it together? I reckon we should.
- 2:00Let's read together Second Samuel, chapter 6.
- 2:14Then David again gathered all the elite troops of Israel,
- 2:1830,000 in all. He led them to Baylor of Judah
- 2:22to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the Lord
- 2:27of Heaven's armies who is enthroned between the cherubim.
- 2:31They placed the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from
- 2:35Abinadab's house, which was on a hill.
- 2:38Uzza and Ahio Abinadab sons were guiding the cart that carried
- 2:43the ark of God. A hire walked in front of the
- 2:46Ark. David and all the people of
- 2:49Israel were celebrating before the Lord, singing songs and
- 2:53playing all kinds of musical instruments, liars, harps,
- 2:57tambourines, castanets and symbols.
- 3:01But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nakon, the
- 3:04oxen stumbled and Uza reached out his hand and steadied the
- 3:09ark of God. Then the Lord's anger was
- 3:12aroused against Urza, and God struck him dead because of this.
- 3:17So Uza died right there beside the Ark of God.
- 3:21David was angry because the Lord's anger had burst out
- 3:24against Urza. He named that place Perez Uza,
- 3:29which means to burst out against USA as it is still cold today.
- 3:35David was now afraid of the Lord, and he asked, how can I
- 3:39ever bring the Ark of the Lord back into my care?
- 3:43Sir David decided not to move the Ark of the Lord into the
- 3:46city of David. Instead, he took it to the House
- 3:50of Obed Edom of Gath. The Ark of the Lord remained
- 3:54there in Obed Edom's house for three months, and the Lord
- 3:58blessed Obed Edom and his entire household.
- 4:02Then King David was told the Lord has blessed Obed Edom's
- 4:07household and everything he has because of the Ark of God.
- 4:12Sir David went there and brought the Ark of God from the House of
- 4:16Obed Edom to the city of David with a great celebration.
- 4:22After the men who were carrying the Ark of the Lord had gone 6
- 4:25steps, David sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf, and David
- 4:30danced before the Lord with all his might wearing a priestly
- 4:35garment. So David and all the people of
- 4:38Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and
- 4:42blowing of Rams horns. But as the ark of the Lord
- 4:46entered the city of David, Michael, the daughter of Saul,
- 4:51looked down from her window. When she saw King David leaping
- 4:55and dancing before the Lord, she was filled with contempt for
- 4:59him. They brought the ark of the Lord
- 5:02and set it in its place inside the special tent David had
- 5:05prepared for it. And David sacrificed burnt
- 5:09offerings and peace offerings to the Lord.
- 5:12When he had finished his sacrifices, David blessed the
- 5:15people in the name of the Lord of Heaven's armies.
- 5:19Then he gave to every Israelite man and woman in the crowd a
- 5:23loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins.
- 5:28Then all the people returned to their homes.
- 5:31When David returned home to bless his own family, Michael,
- 5:35the daughter of Saul, came out to meet him.
- 5:38She said in disgust. How distinguished the King of
- 5:43Israel looked today, shamelessly exposing himself to the servant
- 5:47girls like any vulgar person might do, David retorted.
- 5:52To Michael, I was dancing before the Lord, who chose me above
- 5:58your father and all his family. He appointed me as the leader of
- 6:02Israel, the people of the Lord. So I celebrate before the Lord,
- 6:07Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this,
- 6:10even to be humiliated in my own eyes.
- 6:13But those servant girls you mentioned will indeed think I'm
- 6:17distinguished. O Michael, the daughter of Saul
- 6:21remained childless throughout her entire life.
- 6:35You are holy, Lord. You are the God of all creation.
- 6:42You are the Most Holy One and let it never escape our
- 6:48attention. It just the most incredible
- 6:52privilege that we have coming before you.
- 6:56You love us, and you invite us with open arms, and through
- 7:02Jesus you make us acceptable before you, but you are no less
- 7:08incredible. You are no less awesome, even
- 7:13though we can come to you. It just boggles our human minds
- 7:20and we're so grateful and like David, let us just put down all
- 7:25our own egos and just defer to you.
- 7:31And even if we have to look silly in front of others, ohhh.
- 7:34We just want to love you and worship you above everything
- 7:38else. Our incredible, our powerful,
- 7:43our all knowing, all ruling holy God.
- 7:49How we fall on our faces and we worship you and we can do all of
- 7:56this only and the sanctifying name of Jesus.
- 8:01Oh man.
