- 0:00This is The Catholic Current with Fr. Robert McTague.
- 0:05I remember asking Cardinal Arince, who is the only living father of Vatican II now,
- 0:11I think at the age of 93, but I asked him one time,
- 0:15what would be the reaction of the average bishop from Vatican II
- 0:19walking into the average American church on a Sunday morning
- 0:22and beholding the liturgy?
- 0:24And he said they would die of cardiac arrest.
- 0:28I feel that way anyway, and I wasn't even at Vatican II.
- 0:34Praised be Jesus Christ, this is Fr. Robert McTague of The Society of Jesus,
- 0:38your daily host for The Catholic Current,
- 0:40where we bring Christ to the world and the world to Christ.
- 0:42You're listening to us from the station of La Crosse Studios,
- 0:44your local radio station, the iCatholic Radio mobile app,
- 0:47where we proclaim the fullness of truth with clarity and charity.
- 0:51As always, let's start with prayer.
- 0:53In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 0:56Almighty God, through the intercession of St. Ignatius of Loyola,
- 0:59we ask that we pour forth your Holy Spirit upon us,
- 1:01a spirit of discernment that may hear your voice and obey your command.
- 1:05In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
- 1:07Hey friends, it's Friday here on The Catholic Current.
- 1:09You know what that means. Let's talk about this, you and me.
- 1:12We'll walk through a complex issue together,
- 1:14but before we do that, I want to offer you an invitation.
- 1:18If you go to the stationofthecross.com,
- 1:20the top of the webpage, two very large buttons,
- 1:24and that banner there, it says,
- 1:25Meet Fr. McTague in person at Harvard, Massachusetts or Buffalo, New York.
- 1:31All the details are there.
- 1:33There's a pro-life dinner in Harvard, Massachusetts,
- 1:36and then I will be speaking about faith in a time of crisis in Buffalo.
- 1:41I'd like to see you there.
- 1:43That having been said, let's jump into our topic today.
- 1:46It's called Fulton Sheen and the Demonic,
- 1:48and that's based on a book that was published recently called On the Demonic,
- 1:53and it's compiled and edited by Fr. Dave Tomaziski,
- 1:56who happens to be a former student of mine,
- 1:59and now he serves in the Archdiocese of Detroit.
- 2:03Fr. Dave went through the vast, vast corpus of the works of Fulton Sheen,
- 2:10as well as all the various archives,
- 2:12and put together everything that Fulton Sheen had to say about the demonic,
- 2:18so God bless him for that, and I do recommend it.
- 2:22It's worth studying.
- 2:23It's worth praying over,
- 2:24and I know everyone gets excited about Fulton Sheen because of his videos
- 2:29that ended up on YouTube, his TV shows and so on,
- 2:32but boy, oh boy, he wrote a lot,
- 2:36and his books are worth reading carefully,
- 2:39so here's my suggestion.
- 2:41He's going to be beatified this year.
- 2:44Leading up to that, I would at least occasionally,
- 2:48once a month at a minimum,
- 2:50do something dedicated to Fulton Sheen on Fridays,
- 2:53and you could let us know, please, what you think about that.
- 2:57If you want more of that, you know, cheer us on.
- 2:59You can contact us at thestationofthecross.com
- 3:02slash askfather.
- 3:04Well, why of all the very many books by and about Fulton Sheen,
- 3:08why this one?
- 3:09Why On the Demonic?
- 3:12As a Jesuit, I take spiritual warfare very seriously.
- 3:17Now, there are people who assume that because of the famous movie
- 3:20The Exorcist in the 1970s where Jesuits were prominently featured,
- 3:25they assume that every Jesuit, including myself,
- 3:28that we're all exorcists,
- 3:30and I'm rather coy when they ask me if I'm an exorcist,
- 3:33and I just say, well, I do have to watch the movie every year
- 3:36to keep my certification up and wink,
- 3:38and they kind of laugh nervously
- 3:40and say, I'm kidding, but I'm not an exorcist.
- 3:43But as a Jesuit, I do take spiritual warfare very seriously
- 3:47because Saint Ignatius did,
- 3:49and he would refer to Satan as the enemy of our human nature,
- 3:53and he never gets tired,
- 3:56and he never gets bored,
- 3:59and he is always at work.
- 4:01So we are in a war.
- 4:05We're being contested for.
- 4:08And this is why I rage against presentations of the Gospel
- 4:12as if our Lord were simply the facilitator
- 4:16of the cult of our self-esteem.
- 4:21We really have to be in it to win it.
- 4:24We have to choose Christ consciously
- 4:27because the default value is Satan.
- 4:30So, I also want to give a warning from C.S. Lewis
- 4:34in the Screwtape Letters.
- 4:36There are two extremes to be avoided.
- 4:38The first is, you know, Satan is just a symbol.
- 4:42There's no personal devil.
- 4:44Evil is just psychosis.
- 4:47Let's get rid of all that crazy, wacky, medieval symbolism.
- 4:51And on the other hand is that the devil, the boogeyman,
- 4:54is under every rock and hiding in every corner,
- 4:57and that's why you need fresh batteries
- 4:59in your grave matter detector at all times.
- 5:03So let's not be blasé and let's not be neurotic,
- 5:06but let's just, you know, we're in a war zone.
- 5:10We're in a war zone and we have to act accordingly.
- 5:14I want to draw on some of the etymology
- 5:18that Fulton Sheen used.
- 5:22Satan, hasatan in Hebrew, means the accuser,
- 5:27the prosecutor, which is why it's so significant
- 5:30in the Book of Revelations where it says,
- 5:32the accuser of the brethren has been cast out or cast down.
- 5:37And then we also talk about the diabolical, the diabolic,
- 5:42which is the root of the devil,
- 5:45and he talks about the Greek word diabolain.
- 5:49Now, a bolain is something that can be broken,
- 5:54that needs to be brought back together again.
- 5:56If you've ever seen in old film noir detective movies,
- 6:00in black and white, of course,
- 6:02where somebody tears a hundred dollar bill
- 6:05and says, do X, Y, and Z and you'll get the other half.
- 6:10That taking apart what should be together
- 6:13is the diabolain, and bringing together
- 6:17what should be together is the symbolain.
- 6:20In Greece they wouldn't tear hundred dollar bills
- 6:22in ancient Greece, but they would break a plate.
- 6:25And you're sitting here, look for the guy
- 6:26who has the other half of this plate.
- 6:28So the symbolain is bringing together
- 6:32that which is symbolized by the symbol.
- 6:37So in the sacramental symbol of pouring water,
- 6:42that which is symbolized is the living water
- 6:45and the saving grace of God.
- 6:48So diabolain is pulling apart what should be together
- 6:55it is disorder.
- 6:58Now prior to the speaking of the word of the father,
- 7:03speaking of the logos, the eternal word
- 7:06through whom all things were made,
- 7:08in Genesis it talks about the spirit brooding
- 7:11over the waters.
- 7:12Now you have to imagine in the ancient world
- 7:15the ocean is limitless.
- 7:18It's not defined.
- 7:20It's chaos, it's dark, it's mysterious.
- 7:23And the word of God brings water out of the chaos.
- 7:30So when we sin, we are disordered.
- 7:36Jacques Maritain, who's not a fan
- 7:40for a lot of different reasons,
- 7:42but he did write a very interesting treatment
- 7:45of what Thomas Aquinas had to say about evil.
- 7:49And Maritain gives a good analysis
- 7:52from our Lord's statement from the Gospel of John
- 7:54where he says,
- 7:55apart from me you can do nothing.
- 7:58And when a child misbehaves,
- 8:01we say that he is naughty,
- 8:04which is an old English form of naught,
- 8:07which means zero or nothing, nihil.
- 8:10So when our Lord says,
- 8:12apart from me you can do nothing,
- 8:14Maritain reads that as,
- 8:15apart from me, apart from the logos,
- 8:19apart from the eternal word of the Father
- 8:22through whom all things were made,
- 8:26we can only annihilate.
- 8:30So when we sin,
- 8:33when we participate in the diabolical,
- 8:36diabolain,
- 8:38we are violently undoing the fabric of the universe.
- 8:46We're taking the creation which God made
- 8:49and saw to be good
- 8:52and we're just unraveling that.
- 8:55So sin is never just breaking an arbitrary rule.
- 9:02It's a way of declaring,
- 9:04I hate creation and I hate the Creator.
- 9:10And with the absolute, eternal, mortal enemy of my soul,
- 9:15I will begin to undo the fabric of creation.
- 9:23I will choose chaos rather than the logos.
- 9:28And so sin disfigures the image and likeness of God in us.
- 9:34So sin is anti-human
- 9:36and because of the incarnation,
- 9:39the Word made flesh,
- 9:40the Christ of God who is God made man,
- 9:43what is anti-human is also anti-Christ.
- 9:48And that's why we have to take sin so very seriously.
- 9:55So many thoughts are coming to mind.
- 9:57Elizabeth Barrett Browning in one of her poems
- 9:59puts these words into the mouth of Satan.
- 10:01He says,
- 10:02I too have strength,
- 10:04the strength to fall from him and not to cry to him,
- 10:09the strength to behold him and not to love him.
- 10:14And oh my goodness,
- 10:16save us all,
- 10:17dear Lord,
- 10:18we too have that power,
- 10:22that strength to see him and not to love him,
- 10:28to fall from him and not to cry to him.
- 10:34My friends,
- 10:35sin is a very,
- 10:38very terrible,
- 10:41terrifying power.
- 10:44It never behaves.
- 10:46It can never be controlled.
- 10:48It can never be managed.
- 10:50It can only be defeated by Christ.

- 12:54Here we are Friday.
- 12:55Let's talk about this.
- 12:57We're doing, I think,
- 12:59the first in a semi-regular series on Fulton Sheen.
- 13:03This one is on Fulton Sheen and the demonic.
- 13:06We are being contested for.
- 13:08We are in hostile territory.
- 13:10And I want to talk about how the fact
- 13:13that the enemy really only has a limited set of tools.
- 13:18And he pretty much does the same damn thing
- 13:21over and over again.
- 13:22And we can see this with our Lord
- 13:25of the 40 days in the desert.
- 13:28And Fulton Sheen says that
- 13:30what the devil offers our Lord
- 13:32is shortcuts from the cross.
- 13:34Didn't work with our Lord.
- 13:36Didn't work with our Lord.
- 13:38Sad to say it works all too often with us.
- 13:42St. Ignatius Loyola,
- 13:43talking about the work of the devil,
- 13:45whom he describes as the enemy of our human nature,
- 13:49says that the devil is always trying
- 13:52to offer us pride, riches, and honors.
- 13:56So let's see how this played out with our Lord
- 13:59and then see how it plays out in our own lives.
- 14:02I want to jump to page 53 of Fulton Sheen's book
- 14:07called On the Demonic,
- 14:09which I really do recommend to you.
- 14:12And Sheen has a great quote from Dostoevsky.
- 14:17It's a line from the Brothers Karamazov.
- 14:20And if you haven't read that,
- 14:21oh my goodness, you need to read that.
- 14:22But Dostoevsky says this, quote,
- 14:24A day is coming when people will say
- 14:27there is no sin, there is no crime,
- 14:30there is no guilt, there is only hunger.
- 14:35They will then come crying to the feet of the state
- 14:39and say, give us bread.
- 14:42So says Dostoevsky.
- 14:44So our Lord is out in the desert.
- 14:46He's fasting and he's hungry.
- 14:48And the devil says, hey, you know,
- 14:51use your mojo, take these stones over here,
- 14:53turn them into loaves of bread,
- 14:55not just for you, but for everybody.
- 14:59You know, confront human emptiness
- 15:02and offer it to fill it with something other than God.
- 15:07This is the old Roman emperor trick
- 15:09of giving the people bread and circuses.
- 15:12Keep them, you know, dumb, fat, distracted, doped up,
- 15:17and then they're pliable, then they're sheeple,
- 15:20and they won't notice when they're being fleeced.
- 15:23C.S. Lewis said that human history
- 15:26is the long, tragic story of people looking
- 15:29for anything other than God to make them happy.
- 15:35And why is it such a hard sell that God can make us happy?
- 15:41I can go on for hours and hours about that.
- 15:45It's that we lack moral imagination.
- 15:48You see, we're fallen creatures in a fallen world.
- 15:53We covet, we lust, we steal, we lie,
- 15:56and we're coveted and robbed from, and it's all that.
- 16:01We suspect that everyone is at least as rotten as us.
- 16:05So we can't imagine a genuinely altruistic love,
- 16:11and that's exactly what God gives us.
- 16:14So the devil says, look, you can have your toys,
- 16:18and you can have your fun, and you can have your idols,
- 16:22and God wants to take all of that from you.
- 16:27So that temptation of turn these stones into bread
- 16:33is don't preach the cross, preach materialism.
- 16:38Instead, someone just sent me a meme,
- 16:39and it was a full bakery, and it says,
- 16:42the promise of socialism is that if you eliminate profit,
- 16:46bread will magically bake itself
- 16:49out of a sense of moral superiority.
- 16:53So the promise of politics is free stuff.
- 16:57Vote for me, and I will give you free stuff.
- 17:01And if you vote for me from a sense of envy and hatred,
- 17:05I'll give you the stuff that used to belong to people
- 17:08whom we don't like.
- 17:10And now there are Catholic members of the people
- 17:14who should really know better clubs.
- 17:16Oh, we'll do you one better.
- 17:18To be a Christian means free stuff for everyone to infinity,
- 17:22because God's infinite, and humans have infinite dignity
- 17:25or something, and mathematically, that doesn't work.
- 17:27So what's illogical can't be of God.
- 17:31And this is what St. Ignatius would call riches.
- 17:34So this is the God of the belly.
- 17:37In China, they would refer to rice Christians,
- 17:42people who agreed to baptism in exchange for rice
- 17:47that the missionaries were offered.
- 17:49In Ireland, it was known as taking the soup.
- 17:53Catholics were starved, and you could be given soup
- 17:57if you renounced the Catholic Church.
- 18:00See how this works?
- 18:02And that still happens today.
- 18:05Let's take a look at the same temptation.
- 18:09The devil brings our Lord up to the parapet of the temple
- 18:12and says, throw yourself down.
- 18:16Because scripture says, the angels will catch you
- 18:19lest you strike your foot against the stone.
- 18:22And how does Fulton Sheen characterize that?
- 18:27He calls it wonders.
- 18:30He calls it the technology of progress.
- 18:35More, better, higher, faster.
- 18:40I remember when there was a big excitement,
- 18:42when television was in color.
- 18:45It was described as in living color.
- 18:49I remember when it was a big excitement,
- 18:53when a motel said HBO in every room,
- 18:57and now the standard is free Wi-Fi.
- 19:02So the idea of having the more, the having the better,
- 19:06having the novelty,
- 19:10this is what Ignatius would call the honors.
- 19:14An important distinction.
- 19:16Ignatius gave up the honors of the world,
- 19:20but he never gave up honor.
- 19:22When he was a layman and he was first presenting
- 19:24the spiritual exercises,
- 19:26he was arrested by the Inquisition,
- 19:29by the Dominicans,
- 19:32and finally they said,
- 19:34hey, you know, our bad, sorry.
- 19:37There's really nothing heretical in what you're speaking.
- 19:40You can leave the cell now.
- 19:42You're free.
- 19:43And he goes, no, no, no.
- 19:45It's a matter of honor for me.
- 19:47You have to put in writing
- 19:50that I was imprisoned unjustly,
- 19:54and that there was nothing wrong in what I was teaching.
- 19:58So he gave up the honors of the world,
- 20:01but he never compromised on his integrity.
- 20:05And now for us,
- 20:08and we see this so often,
- 20:11you know, Andy Warhol said many, many years ago
- 20:14that everyone is famous for 15 minutes,
- 20:17so now it's clickbait.
- 20:20The aspiration of many young people
- 20:22is wanting to be an influencer.
- 20:25People are doing rude, dangerous, horrible, violent,
- 20:29scandalous things,
- 20:31uploading it to the intranet for a few clicks
- 20:34for the dopamine rush of followers and so on.
- 20:38And that's just not healthy.
- 20:41That's just not healthy.
- 20:43And I get a little anxious,
- 20:45forgive me if sounding like a grumpy old man,
- 20:47in my day,
- 20:50some of my younger brethren in the clergy
- 20:54who are more adept at technology and social media
- 20:57than an old grump like I am,
- 20:59God bless them.
- 21:01They're using all the tools available to proclaim Christ.
- 21:04But I do remember several months ago,
- 21:06there was a young priest
- 21:08who's got quite the following online,
- 21:10and he was presenting this video on his social media.
- 21:13And you would think that he had just been diagnosed
- 21:17with stage four pancreatic cancer
- 21:20and had two weeks to live.
- 21:22It was so maudlin.
- 21:23It turns out his three years of the parish were up
- 21:25and he was just being transferred across town.
- 21:27But he gave a highlight reel
- 21:29of all the best events of his three years of the parish
- 21:33so that people would continue to remember him.
- 21:36And I said, dude, you've got to talk to your bishop
- 21:39and you've got to talk to your spiritual director
- 21:42and then you need to be punched by your seminary classmates.
- 21:46Don't do that.
- 21:49The last temptation is the political temptation,
- 21:54whereas we have pride.
- 21:57This is pride related to power.
- 22:01All these kingdoms are mine
- 22:05and they can be yours if you worship me.
- 22:10You can be the focal point of adulation.
- 22:16You can be king of the world.
- 22:21Now, put not your trust in princes.
- 22:25And this is why I'm very concerned
- 22:29that many Christians of many different stripes
- 22:32seem to be striving to be NGOs with steeples,
- 22:37as the phrase goes.
- 22:39There are people who would like the Holy See on this account
- 22:43to become campus ministry or the Newman Center
- 22:46for the United Nations.
- 22:49And Fulton Sheen at various times warned against this
- 22:54and said that this could be the fate of the church
- 22:57for 50, 100, or even 200 years.
- 23:01And he was speaking about this in the 70s.
- 23:03So the 50 years has come and gone
- 23:05and I think here we are.
- 23:08We have to be really, really careful
- 23:11about selling our soul in order to get Caesar's coin
- 23:16and the applause of the court jesters.
- 23:20There's always going to be opposition
- 23:24between church and state.
- 23:28I think we've lost the vocabulary, the grammar,
- 23:34to have a really Catholic conversation
- 23:38about the right relationship between church and state.
- 23:41So right now I will simply say this.
- 23:44Secular Caesar is not the friend of the church.
- 23:51And let's do our good work
- 23:54without asking Caesar for the gold
- 23:59because there are strings attached.
- 24:04Caesar never gives the gold out of the goodness of his heart.
- 24:10He wants something from us.
- 24:14And what he wants from us
- 24:17is for us to preach Christ without the cross,
- 24:23to preach Christ without naming the sins for which he died.
- 24:30Let's not take Caesar's coin
- 24:34just as the persecuted Irish Catholics wouldn't take the soup.
- 24:39Let's not take Caesar's coin.
- 24:43Let's not fall for the blandishments of pride.
- 24:47It's a shortcut from the cross.
- 24:51Fulton Sheen warned us about this decades ago.
- 24:55I hope we have the good sense to heed his voice.
- 24:59I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTague,

- 26:51And don't forget to mention the Station of the Cross.
- 26:54Here we are in the third segment of a Friday here at the Catholic Current.
- 26:57Let's talk about this.
- 26:59And this is going to be what I think is the first of at least an occasional
- 27:03series on Fulton Sheen leading up to his beatification.
- 27:07We're talking about Fulton Sheen and the demonic.
- 27:10We're talking about spiritual warfare.
- 27:13We are certainly being contested for.
- 27:17And as a Jesuit, one of the greatest gifts I've received from our Lord
- 27:22through St. Ignatius Loyola is the vision of the spiritual exercises
- 27:26of St. Ignatius Loyola.
- 27:28And making the exercises is like having lenses implanted on the eyes of your soul.
- 27:34You can't go back to seeing the world the way that you used to
- 27:40before you made the exercises.
- 27:42Now, I'm a sinner.
- 27:45I live that vision imperfectly.
- 27:48And as I get older, I look back on my sin with anguish and shame.
- 27:53But I can't deny that I didn't see.
- 27:57The vision has been given.
- 28:00And I know that we're being contested for, that the enemy is always at work,
- 28:07and that he's got not just a generic plan.
- 28:12You know, yes, pride, riches, and honors for everyone,
- 28:15according to St. Ignatius.
- 28:16But those things that get to Bob McTague from Newark, New Jersey,
- 28:21he's got something planned for me.
- 28:23St. James says in his epistle that we're all uniquely tempted.
- 28:28And we need self-knowledge so that we know how the enemy gets to us.
- 28:34One of the first patients I worked with when I was a hospital chaplain
- 28:38was a young woman, very, very tragic individual,
- 28:43was a gifted athlete, got an athletic scholarship to an Ivy League school,
- 28:50and now was in the hospital dying from her drug addiction
- 28:57and from what she did to sell herself to support her drug addiction.
- 29:03And I asked her, you know, I said,
- 29:05Look, I'm a sinner. I'm certainly not throwing stones.
- 29:08I've never been an addict. I don't understand.
- 29:12And she said, Well, Reverend, she said,
- 29:15For just a little while, the drug takes you so far away from the pain
- 29:23that it seems to be worth it.
- 29:25And she said over and over again,
- 29:27People, places, and things. People, places, and things.
- 29:30You've got to avoid the wrong people, places, and things.
- 29:34So from self-knowledge, I know that some people, places, and things
- 29:39have near occasions of sin for me,
- 29:42and I have an obligation to avoid them.
- 29:48And so do you.
- 29:51And so if you're listening to this on a Friday,
- 29:53as part of your Friday penance,
- 29:55ask God to reveal to you the people, places, and things that work against you.
- 30:00And of course, the enemy is spiteful,
- 30:02and whenever we have a victory, whether it's receiving a sacrament
- 30:07or going on a retreat or some personal success, some grace,
- 30:12it is inevitable that there will be a counterattack
- 30:17because the enemy is spiteful.
- 30:19So now, we've laid out, we're being contested for,
- 30:22the enemy never sleeps.
- 30:24To use a Harry Potter phrase,
- 30:27what about defense against the dark arts?
- 30:32How do we fight back?
- 30:35Because we're not helpless, because our help is in the name of the Lord.
- 30:39I'm a very big 1 Peter 5,
- 30:42the enemy is like a roaring lion looking for whom he would devour.
- 30:46And I'm very Ephesians 6,
- 30:49put on the whole armor of God.
- 30:52And also wear your miraculous medal and your scapular.
- 30:57So Fulton Sheehan, in his book on the demonic,
- 31:00talks about the three great weapons,
- 31:03the holy name, the precious blood of our Lord,
- 31:07and then, of course, invoking Our Lady.
- 31:10Now, one of the reasons I enjoy not just listening to Fulton Sheehan,
- 31:14but reading him, was he was a scholar.
- 31:16He did his homework.
- 31:18And I'm fascinated by etymology.
- 31:21I'm fascinated by the roots of words.
- 31:24And so the holy name of Jesus, our Lord.
- 31:28And it used to be a custom for Catholics
- 31:31to bow our heads at the holy name of Jesus.
- 31:34It's certainly in the Mass as well.
- 31:37And then top men, top men, decided,
- 31:41Nah, not so much.
- 31:44But Jesus is from the Hebrew Aramaic Yeshua,
- 31:51which means Savior.
- 31:54Now, in the ancient world,
- 31:56your name revealed something about you.
- 32:00So the Christ of God, the Anointed One,
- 32:03Son of God and Son of Mary,
- 32:05the Word made flesh,
- 32:07didn't come to earth as a tourist.
- 32:11He wasn't visiting.
- 32:14He came with a purpose.
- 32:19He came to offer his life and sacrifice
- 32:23and atonement for our sin
- 32:25to rebuild the bridge between God and man
- 32:28that we as sinners burned down.
- 32:32And as we consider, as we recall,
- 32:36the ascension of our Lord,
- 32:39we teach that so poorly.
- 32:42It makes me crazy.
- 32:44We're obliged to celebrate that God left us
- 32:47and he'll come back angry at the end of days
- 32:50to collect the run and now we're on our own.
- 32:52Hooray.
- 32:53No, no, no, no.
- 32:55Because the other name for our Lord is Emmanuel.
- 32:59God with us.
- 33:02God with us.
- 33:05God our Lord, the Christ of God,
- 33:08the Word made flesh,
- 33:10remains with us in the sacraments,
- 33:15in the gospel,
- 33:17in the life of the church,
- 33:20and also in the person of his priests.
- 33:25And that is why we call upon the name of our Lord
- 33:31because he is the Savior who is with us now.
- 33:38And that's why the Eastern monks,
- 33:41you know, practicing the Jesus prayer,
- 33:44they want to have as constant as breathing
- 33:50the holy name of Jesus passing through their mind
- 33:53and their body as well.
- 33:55And we would do well to do the same.
- 33:58The other great instrument against evil,
- 34:01against the diabolical,
- 34:03is the precious blood of our Lord.
- 34:05And friends, I'm a big fan of the litany of the precious blood.
- 34:10And I really encourage you to pray that every day.
- 34:15And I'm going to ask Mr. Engineer to grab a link for that.
- 34:19So put it in the show notes just in case you don't have.
- 34:22But I really do seriously urge you to pray the litany of the precious blood every day.
- 34:27Now in Hebrew worship,
- 34:29it was understood that life was in the blood.
- 34:33The blood was the principle of life.
- 34:37And sin brought about death.
- 34:41And the remedy for death was life.
- 34:43So you would expunge sin.
- 34:47You would drive out sin through the shedding and sprinkling of blood.
- 34:52Now it was merely symbolic with the sacrifice of animals in the Old Covenant
- 35:00and made absolutely, literally true and effective
- 35:05in the sacrifice of the Lamb of God and Calvary.
- 35:09And that one same propitiating sacrifice is made present again
- 35:14at the holy sacrifice of the Mass.
- 35:17When we attend Mass, we stand before Christ crucified
- 35:22and we should dress and act accordingly.
- 35:26And blood in the Hebrew worldview was also the mark of covenant.
- 35:34You sealed the deal with blood.
- 35:38Fidelity to the covenant was a matter of life and death.
- 35:44My Jesuit superior in London made a clever joke
- 35:47about the difference between being involved and being committed.
- 35:51He said it's like bacon and eggs.
- 35:53The chicken is involved, the pig is committed.
- 35:55So we can't just be, as my students used to say, Catholic, I guess.
- 36:00We have to be absolutely all the way in.
- 36:05And we have to invoke the precious blood of our Lord.
- 36:09We have to ask to be cleansed by the precious blood of our Lord.
- 36:14And we need to be sealed again in His covenant, in the precious blood of our Lord.
- 36:21I can go on and on about that.
- 36:23And also, look up the doctrine of concomitance.
- 36:28And once you see what that is, you'll get it.
- 36:31I'll ask Mr. Engineer to put in a link for that
- 36:33because people misunderstand the Eucharist about that.
- 36:35So, running out of time, Fulton Sheen talks about Our Lady as the gateway to the Eucharist.
- 36:43He says we can understand the Eucharist as presence, as sacrifice,
- 36:48and presence and sacrifice in the godless world.
- 36:51And so he talks about Our Lady as a tabernacle in relation to the host,
- 36:57as a tabernacle in relation to the sword, and as a tabernacle in relation to the hour.
- 37:04The word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and Our Lady gave of her human nature
- 37:11so that the Son of God can become truly man.
- 37:16Now, we know from real science that whenever a woman conceives,
- 37:21some cells of her child's body remain in her bloodstream forever.
- 37:29So, Our Lady, from the moment of our Lord's conception, was the first tabernacle.
- 37:36So, of course, her body could not suffer corruption through death,
- 37:41which is why she had to be assumed body and soul to heaven.
- 37:45So, she is the first, and she is the eternal tabernacle.
- 37:51So, if we want to find the dwelling place of our Lord, we can turn rightly to Our Lady.
- 37:59And then he relates, Fulton Sheen relates Our Lady to the sword.
- 38:03At the presentation, the prophet Simeon says,
- 38:08a sword will pierce your heart, and the thoughts of many will be revealed.
- 38:15All the great saints, and I think Louis de Montfort in particular says,
- 38:19if you want to know something about a person, look at how he responds to Our Lady,
- 38:27and look at his relationship to the rosary.
- 38:30And if someone is not really invested in the rosary, then, as our young people would say,
- 38:35they're sus, they're suspicious.
- 38:38And finally, the tabernacle and the hour.
- 38:42Fulton Sheen was a very big devotee of the holy hour, which I commend to you.
- 38:48Remember the scene, the wedding feast at Cana, this is not yet my hour.
- 38:54And his time of revelation, the full exposure, the full truth of Jesus of Nazareth
- 39:06as the Christ of God, the Lamb of God, will happen at Calvary.
- 39:11And she, as Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church, is fully revealed at Calvary also.
- 39:21So, when we turn to Our Lady, we know that we are in a new era, a new time,
- 39:30a time of salvation, when Satan, the accuser of the brethren, will be cast out.
- 39:38And St. John Vianney said, Our Lady will be very, very busy interceding for us at work in our lives,
- 39:47and her work will not cease until the end of the general judgment.
- 39:54Think on these things today, take them to prayer.
- 39:57Talk about it with those you love.

- 41:41Here on The Catholic Current, we engage the issue seriously and faithfully.
- 41:46And that intellectual freedom exists because we are listener funded.
- 41:50Support us please at thestationofthecross.com.
- 41:53Here we are at the last segment of our Friday.
- 41:55You know what that usually means, Week in Readiness.
- 41:57You and me reviewing the headlines of the week in light of the upcoming Sunday Scriptures.
- 42:01So we'll be all prayed up for Sunday Mass.
- 42:03However, as of this recording, this week hasn't happened yet.
- 42:10I'm recording this in advance because I'll be traveling next week.
- 42:14Please do pray for my safe travels.
- 42:17Now I'm mindful that you recognize as yesterday was in fact Ascension Thursday.
- 42:24It used to be recognized as a holy day of obligation.
- 42:27And then somebody said, hey, going to Mass on Thursday once a year is hard.
- 42:34Quit it.
- 42:35So in some diocese, the feast of the Ascension Thursday is translated to Sunday.
- 42:45I think this is not a good idea because, you know, 40 days after our Lord rose,
- 42:5240 is really important biblically, symbolically, etc., etc.
- 42:55And to just make it one Sunday among many, I think it loses a lot.
- 43:01And so I'm exercising the option of not talking about Ascension Sunday
- 43:07because it's Thursday and you should have celebrated it yesterday.
- 43:10I'll be talking about the seventh Sunday of Easter.
- 43:13But before I get there, I want to give a shout out to a friend of the show,
- 43:16someone whose work I admire very, very much,
- 43:20and I only wish she would make much, much, much, much, much more work.
- 43:25She has a YouTube channel under the pen name Ipsitilla.
- 43:30And what she does brilliantly is she parodizes some of the church's foibles.
- 43:37She writes lyrics that tweak the nose of the people who should really know Better Club.
- 43:42And she takes a familiar hymn regarding Ascension Thursday and says,
- 43:47Why are we moving this to Sunday?
- 43:49And I'm going to ask Mr. Engineer to play that now.
- 43:52Hail the day that saw Him rise.
- 43:57Alleluia!
- 44:01Now we stare at empty skies.
- 44:05Alleluia!
- 44:10Thursday we watched Him ascend.
- 44:14Alleluia!
- 44:19Sunday morning we pretend.
- 44:23Alleluia!
- 44:28Forty days since He arose.
- 44:32Alleluia!
- 44:37To the Father's side He goes.
- 44:41Alleluia!
- 44:45Soon the Holy Ghost to send.
- 44:50Alleluia!
- 44:54At the first novena's end.
- 44:58Alleluia!
- 45:03Christ went up His throne to mount.
- 45:08Alleluia!
- 45:12Teach, O Lord, Thy church to count.
- 45:16Alleluia!
- 45:21Let us marvel at the ways.
- 45:25Alleluia!
- 45:29God has marked His planning days.
- 45:34Alleluia!
- 45:38Bishops need not be afraid.
- 45:43Alleluia!
- 45:47Of what Christians long obeyed.
- 45:52Alleluia!
- 45:56Let these holy days remain.
- 46:01Alleluia!
- 46:05Be it as bright days to abstain.
- 46:09Alleluia!
- 46:14That was Ipsitilla. Thank you very much.
- 46:16And we're going to link to that in our show notes.
- 46:18And notice she referred to the novena the nine days after Ascension Thursday.
- 46:24That's when we have the gift of the Holy Spirit in Pentecost.
- 46:28And all that symbolism goes away if we translate the feast to Sunday.
- 46:35So if you're following the Novus Ordo calendar of the Pauline Rite, I hope that you are celebrating the seventh Sunday of Easter.
- 46:41And that's Lectionary 59.
- 46:45I remember some boy at summer Bible camp was asked to summarize the Acts of the Apostles.
- 46:54And he did it this way.
- 46:55The Lord went up, the Spirit came down, and the Church went out.
- 46:59And that's a very summary theology, but it's a good summary of the theology.
- 47:04And we could talk at length if we were planning to celebrate Ascension Thursday, which happened yesterday,
- 47:09to talk about the necessity and the rightness of the Ascension and all the different bad ways that it can be misunderstood.
- 47:17But I want to talk about what is the Church's mission now.
- 47:21We have work to do.
- 47:24And our Lord makes this clear in the Gospel reading of the day for the seventh Sunday Easter from John 17.
- 47:33And he says,
- 47:35Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to me I have given to them.
- 47:43They accepted them.
- 47:46That's what I want to focus on.
- 47:50They accepted them.
- 47:53And part of the concern that I have among our friends, the synodalists, is that there's not a lot of accepting.
- 48:04There's not a lot.
- 48:05This is what our Lord has revealed.
- 48:07This is what our Lord has entrusted to the one Church he founded.
- 48:11We the faithful and the hierarchy have no choice but to obey what Christ revealed and hand it on intact to the next generation.
- 48:24But rather, rather, let's get together.
- 48:29We'll have a meeting.
- 48:30We'll have listening.
- 48:32And especially we'll have testimony from people who have, to borrow a parental phrase, very big feelings about certain moral issues.
- 48:46And then we could say, gosh, I had no idea that you felt that strongly about that moral issue.
- 48:55We better change the teaching because reasons.
- 49:00And the Gospel of John says no, no, no.
- 49:06For all the people who say, well, we have to listen to what the Spirit is saying.
- 49:10I say, well, can you specify which Spirit?
- 49:13Because there's more than one.
- 49:14And let's start with what the Holy Spirit has already said through sacred scripture, sacred tradition, and the magisterium.
- 49:25I want to know where God Almighty is already on record before it's suggested to me that we should take out our tool set and tinker with dogma because someone has announced very strong feelings.
- 49:42Friends, we have to be immersed in the Word.
- 49:47So I urge you, mark out time every day.
- 49:52Get yourself the new edition of the Ignatius Press Study Bible.
- 49:56There is more than a lifetime worth to learn there.
